eeds Trinity is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary throughout the 2016-17 academic year with a calendar of events including high-profile lectures. At a recent reception at Leeds Civic Hall, TV presenter and Chancellor of Leeds Trinity, Gabby Logan, congratulated the institution, and highlighted its work with 2,500 businesses across the region. “At Leeds Trinity we prepare our students for life – and our work with businesses is one of the most important objectives of the institution”, said Gabby. “The university is focused on ‘professionalising’ its students, nurturing the whole person and developing skills through its courses.” This was echoed by Stephanie Burras, Chief Executive of Ahead Partnership and Chair of the Employability and Skills Board for Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP). “LEP aims to increase high level skills,
boost business growth and widen employment in the region, and the work Leeds Trinity is doing is complementing this substantially”, she said. “The six week work placements are of huge benefit to our regional businesses, and many Leeds Trinity students continue working for their placement provider.” Graduate employability at Leeds Trinity has risen by 10% in the last five years, with 71% of students gaining a graduate-level job. Retention in the region is also higher than the national average, with 78.7% of students gaining employment in Yorkshire and Humber after graduation. Leeds Trinity University was established in 1966 as two Catholic teacher training colleges with an intake of just 300 students. Today, the University has 3,500 students and offers 88 degree courses. VESTA VICTORIA (VICTORIA LAWRENCE), 1873 – 1951 ‘QUEEN OF THE MUSIC HALL’
Victoria Lawrence first stepped on stage when she was four, billed as ‘Baby Victoria’, singing and dancing alongside her comedian father and her mother, a singer. Her family roots were deeply embedded in Leeds working class life, but like her parents she was to seek fame and fortune elsewhere. Audiences in the raucous music halls of the day loved her slightly saucy comic songs, delivered in cockney style with rousing choruses. She became an international vaudeville star, ‘England’s premier comedienne’, commanding a record salary when she came back to perform at the City Varieties. Like her best known songs, her personal life was tinged with naughtiness and scandal, giving the newspapers scope for titillating headlines! he was born in Holbeck in 1873, the second child of Joseph Lawrence, working then as a mechanic, and Emma, a cloth weaver. Joseph had been brought up in the old, grim Holbeck workhouse, while Emma had worked in the flax mills since childhood. They married in 1870 when 20-year-old Emma was pregnant, and found they could escape their wretched past and the daily grind by performing together, perhaps first in pubs and then at the new music halls springing up around Leeds. Joseph (‘Joe’) developed a comedy act which now seems bizarre but was very popular: blacking his face and singing upside-down, waving his legs like arms while a model head was held on top – billed as the ‘amazing double-headed electric-footed negro’! Emma took the name Marion Nelson, and sang character songs. When pretty little Victoria arrived, they took her along as an added attraction. Constantly on tour, with little chance of schooling, she was destined for the stage.
adultery and cruelty. In 1912, on tour in America, she married her manager, Herbert Terry, and had a second child, but it turned out that his wife was still alive, so the marriage was bigamous (a disconcerting echo of the punch-line from ‘Waiting at the Church’ – ‘Can’t get away to marry you today, My wife won’t let me!’). When Terry’s wife died in 1920 they married again, legally, but he left her a few years later, and she divorced him for desertion. The newspapers had a field day. She retired from the stage during her years with Terry, but after her divorce in 1926 staged a comeback, sometimes appearing with her brother Lawrence Barclay, a songwriter and

ive teams from Customer Services at HSBC took part in Leeds Mencap’s corporate charity challenge, together with several other local businesses, including Zurich Insurance and Winston Solicitors. They were all challenged to take a £50 loan and raise as much money as possible for the charity. While it was extremely close, there could only be one winner and that was Team Wright. Their fundraising ideas included bag packing at Marks & Spencer’s, a sponsored 10K walk along the Leeds to Rodley canal, bake sales, silent auctions, and two darts competitions which resulted in the team raising £1,689. Leeds Mencap, which provides support for adults and children with learning disabilities, was delighted with the support it received, raising over £10,000 in total. “Our Apprentice Challenge is proving to be a popular way for local businesses to support the work
that we do across Leeds”, said Sarah Hooker, Head of Fundraising. “It gives them the opportunity to be really creative and raise funds in a way that best suits the team – it is great for team building as well as helping us to provide our vital services.” Teams are already signing up for 2018 Apprentice Challenge. The enjoyment and the benefits you can get from a good book cannot be underestimated and there is such a huge choice to pick from.” The Read4Recovery book club will meet monthly and initially Waterstones will provide books along with suitable book suggestions. The plan is for the club to become self-sufficient while continuing to partner with Waterstones on ideas and recommendations.

Barber Shop Chronicles ‘Barber Shop Chronicles’, a dynamic new play inspired by a Leeds barber, opens at West Yorkshire Playhouse on Wednesday 12th July and runs until 29th July. ritten by Inua Ellams, the play centres around the conversations African men have in barber shops, and the role they play in their lives – from newsroom to political platform, local hot-spot to confessional, preacher-pulpit to football stadium. It travels from a barber shop in London to Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos and Accra, where the banter can be barbed and the truth is always telling. Inua researched the project in Africa, London and Leeds – where he met a barber from Stylistics on Chapteltown Road who inspired one of the play’s central characters.

Howard Hodgkin: Painting India at The Hepworth The Hepworth Wakefield will present the first comprehensive Howard Hodgkin exhibition to explore the enduring influence India had on his work. He first visited India in 1964 and returned almost annually.
Visiting India changed my way of thinking Showing work from this time period offers an insight into Hodgkin’s relationship to India while also revealing the evolution of his pictorial language from the figurative work of the 1960s through to the dynamic, gestural style of recent years. As a painter of memories and experiences, many of the works capture the artist’s sensory impressions of India, from fierce blazing sunsets to heavy oppressive rains, landscapes and cities he has visited, and portraits of the people he has befriended.
bout 35 works from the last 50 years will be exhibited, from Hodgkin’s earliest India inspired paintings of the 1960s through to new work completed in India earlier this year, before his death in March. Hodgkin is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest painters and has been a central figure in contemporary art for over half a century.
“I fell in love with Indian art when I was at school, thanks to the enterprising art master, Wilfrid Blunt”, said Hodgkin following a visit to The Hepworth Wakefield in 2016. “I longed to visit India, but only managed to do so in my early thirties. It proved a revelation. It changed my way of thinking and, probably, the way I paint.”
Rarely seen photographs and documents from Hodgkin’s personal archive will also feature in the exhibition, as well as journals documenting his journeys in India, which will be displayed publicly for the first time. Howard Hodgkin: Painting India is on display from 1st July – 8th October 2017

Thoresby Society Publishes Mass Observation Diaries ass Observation was set up in 1937 to document the lives of ordinary people. Its first main publication, ‘May the Twelfth: Mass-Observation Day Surveys 1937’, published the testimony of over 200 observers on Coronation Day, 12th May. From August 1939, as war approached, MO asked its observers to keep diaries, and by 1945 some 480 people had done so. This volume publishes diaries from three Leeds’ residents in 1939-40: Joan and Tony Ridge of Far Headingley, who had come to Leeds from London in the Spring of 1938; and Henry Novy, who was sent to Leeds for military training in November 1940 as a result of his call-up.
The Ridges recorded their daily experiences in Leeds as the war closed in on their lives, including the problems of the blackout and fears for loved ones thought to be in danger. They discussed their attitudes to the War and to the Germans – he was of German descent and they had relations and friends in France. In a period that has come to be known as the ‘phoney war’, their lives were less disrupted than they might have expected, and travel and leisure continued to be relatively easy. Their thoughtful writing reveals some of the attitudes of the local population and the views of friends and neighbours, as well as their own private feelings.
All three diarists had literary interests. The Ridges wrote of the theatre, cinema and music; and Novy’s diary says a lot about the mainly working-class men with whom he spent time every day – soldiers in training whose families were suddenly under threat from German bombing. These diaries capture much of the vivid immediacy of everyday wartime life. Patricia and Robert Malcolmson are social historians who have published many books and articles on English history, including editions of several Mass Observation. They now live in British Columbia. Available from The Thoresby Society, The Leeds Library, 18 Commercial Street, LS1 6AL

Issho: A New Japanese Experience
We were lucky enough to be invited along to Issho’s pop-up restaurant at Angelica’s in Trinity recently, and indulged in an evening of fabulous Japanese small plates. The restaurant proper has just opened in Victoria Gate and its rooftop setting is absolutely stunning, with great views across the city. he latest venue from D&D London, Issho, which means ‘together’ in Japanese, serves authentic Japanese dishes with a contemporary twist and an emphasis on sharing.
selection including salmon, tuna and Seaweed wrapped Maki; followed by a delicious a Seared Diver Scallop with Jalapeno and Apple and Eggplant Miso which was rich, dark and melty and unlike any aubergine dish I had ever tasted before. We were now completely lost in a taste bubble, nothing existed beyond our table. We quickly consumed some unbelievably delicious Sesame Grilled Bream with Ponzu and Pickled Onion, and Beef Fillet with Smoked Chilli, then we felt that some salad was called for and went for the Issho Tomato Salad with Whipped Tofu, Sherry Vinegar and Sesame and our taste buds went into overdrive! Every drop of that dressing was spooned out of the bowl and it took serious self control not to actually lick it! Then there was dessert! When we say we opted for Yorkshire Rhubarb Crumble and Cheese Cake you might think “Ho Hum”. But this was Chilled Yorkshire Rhubarb Crumble with Granny Smith and Sake Sorbet and Frozen Yuzu Meringue Cheese Cake. Although both desserts might have had some familiar elements of these dishes, believe me they were neither crumble nor cheese cake as you know them! But , oh so delicious! Now Issho has opened in Victoria Gate and, if their pop up at Angelica’s is anything to go by, it is well worth a visit! Carers Leeds Wins National Award arers Leeds, which offers support, advice and information to carers in Leeds recently won a GSK IMPACT Award, which recognises excellence in charities improving health and wellbeing in their communities. The charity picked up its award at a ceremony in the Science Museum, London, after taking part in a three day development programme with The King’s Fund. Across the UK, there are 6.5 million carers supporting a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill. There are thought to be more than 73,000 carers in Leeds, and there has been an increase in the number of carers of working age who are caring for parents. The pressures of caring contribute to significant health and wellbeing challenges. Research by Carers UK shows that 82% of carers believe caring has a negative impact on their health, and 55% have experienced depression. Carers Leeds is committed to improving the lives of the city’s unpaid carers and helping them to continue caring. Based in Leeds city centre, it delivers confidential oneto-one and group support, as well as advice over the phone and online. It has played a key role in reshaping local services around
the needs of carers. In 2014, it became the single point of access to services for carers in Leeds, which had previously been divided between five separate organisations. Carers now have just one telephone number to remember and can access a greater range of services. Carers Leeds is determined to reach out to different groups of carers and to tailor its support to the diverse communities in the city. Identifying particular barriers to mainstream services faced by Gypsies and Travellers in caring roles, Carers Leeds are providing them with information and advice. The charity also runs other projects, including training for carers of people with dementia, and support for bereaved carers and those affected by the substance or alcohol abuse of someone they know. “Carers Leeds has demonstrated excellent leadership in developing new and improved approaches to meeting the needs of carers”, said Lisa Weaks, Head of Third Sector at The King’s Fund. “By becoming the single point of access for carers in Leeds, it’s helping people navigate a complex system and receive the advice and support they need.”
Candlelighters, the Yorkshire-based children’s cancer charity, already gives £24,000 a year to help fund accomodation for families travelling from all over Yorkshire for their children undergoing treatment at Leeds Children’s Hospital. Current accomodation provided by The Sick Children’s Trust sees a waiting list of at least ten families per night, showing that more accomodation is drastically needed.
So, Candlelighters have now invested in their own house and are calling for help with funding the £250,000 renovation. The Candlelighters Cottage is a two minute walk from Leeds Children’s Hospital, and will house four families a night. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Jane Dowson, has chosen Candlelighters as her official charity this year and all money raised by the Lord Mayor’s appeal will go directly towards funding the renovations at Candlelighters Cottage. If you would like to contribute, visit www.candlelighters.org.uk, or call the charity on 0113 322 9283.
‘Valla’ is a New Approach to Volunteering ounded by enthusiastic volunteers frustrated with the overcomplicated nature of finding volunteering opportunities close-by, new app Valla addresses the need for a modern approach to community volunteering. The aim is to create a network of ‘Vallanteers’ who can all transform their local communities. “Every time we looked for a volunteering opportunity, we found ourselves asking questions such as ‘Where should I look for opportunities?’ ‘How can I apply?’ and ‘What if I want to do it with my friends?’” said app creator James Hall. “Valla answers all of these questions and removes unnecessary

It is free to use, anyone can sign-up to create an opportunity, share it and become a Vallanteer! The team behind the app come from different professional backgrounds
including a utilities technology company and a marketing agency. They share a passion for making volunteering more relevant and widening participation to enable stronger communities and create lasting legacies. Valla will also generate value for medium to large organisations making use of the platform for company CSR activities. Businesses will be able to see what sectors their staff are helping out in, the time they’re spending doing it, the skills they are building and the effectiveness they are having from the point of view of those helped. The Valla app is now available for download on the App Store and Google Play.

Three Daring Challenges for Wheatfields Jean Piper has continually raised funds for Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice since her husband, Clive, was cared for at the hospice – all whilst facing her own battles with cancer.
ean’s cancer is thankfully now in remission but she shows no sign of slowing down. She is celebrating her seventieth year by abseiling down the Arcelor Mittal Orbit building at the Olympic Park, doing a nine-day trek in the Grand Canyon, and Wing Walking in Selby – with all proceeds going to the hospice. She has previously completed numerous activities – from walking on hot coals to relaxing garden parties, and every year she does ‘The Dive for Clive’ – a sky dive in memory of Clive. “I just want to raise as much money as possible to help other people experience the same wonderful care that Clive and I have had”, said Jean. “There are plenty of activities that you can get involved in to help the hospice,
whether that is through volunteering or fundraising”, said Mary Campbell, Head of Fundraising at Wheatfields. “It’s a brilliant way to meet new people, forge friendships and give back to the community.’’ Wheatfields Hospice has been at the heart of the community for over 40 years providing hospice care for people who are dying from conditions such as cancer, heart failure and other life-limiting conditions, and helping people to live out their lives to their very best. News From Your Councillors Cllr
DAN COHEN Alwoodley
After weeks of frantic campaigning, leaflet delivering and posters disappearing from where they were the night before, normality, or something approaching it, has returned. Every time I hear a commentator speak of another election very soon I have a mild panic attack! For everyone’s sake, I hope the next election we have to face is the Leeds City Council election next May.
Community News For now, the most pressing matter at hand is enjoying our city in the glorious British Summer (I am forever the optimist). Three very different events are coming to Leeds over the coming months. On 1st July, the Wetherby Choral Society, which has members from across Alwoodley and North Leeds, will perform their Summer concert with a great repertoire, including Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, at St James’ Parish Church, Wetherby, at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from 01937 574077 Alwoodley Parish Council follows up its Brass Band concert with ‘Jazz on the Village Green’ on Sunday 20th August at 2.30pm, and it’s free. My third Summer highlight is the Leeds City Beach at Millennium Square from 12th – 26th August. This fab event brings the seaside experience to the centre of the city. A beach, rides, Punch and Judy … it really is all there. My one word of caution follows recent PACT meetings (6.30pm on the first Monday of every month at Treetops Community Centre). With the longer days and the finer
weather, it is absolutely vital to ensure doors and windows are secure. It’s also important to ensure that sheds are locked at night and especially that expensive garden furniture and bikes are not left where they can be easily taken. Finally, Leeds is seeing more major sports events. This is great for the city. It does though mean more frequent road closures. My question for the month is – how well do you think the city handles these road closures? Are residents given enough notice? Is road signage sufficiently clear? What could be done better? I welcome your thoughts, which will be presented to the powers that be. As always, if you have any local concerns or issues please do not hesitate to get in touch with Neil, Peter or myself, we’re always happy to try and help.

Hope Pastures’ Fun Dog Show and Fete ope Pastures’ popular Fun Dog Show and Fete will take place on Sunday 16th July, at the horse and pony sanctuary on the Ring Road at Weetwood.
Kim Pengelly, Hope Pastures Fundraiser. “It wasn’t just the Dog Show and Fete that were busy - the food court had a real party atmosphere, helped by the fantastic live music and activities for the family.
Now in its fifth year this is a great day out, even if you don’t have a dog! As well as the showing classes, there’s lots of doggy (and human) activities, attractions and stalls, with home-cooked food (and cake!). For those who wish to sit and ‘chill’ there’s a beer and Pimms tent, as well as live music in the food court. “Last year’s show was a brilliant success - most people who visited stayed most of the day, as there was so much to do”, said
“As we had so many dog entries last year, we’ve set up a second Show Ring this time, which means we’re running twice as many classes – so twice as many dogs will have a chance to win a rosette and some fabulous prizes. We want all dogs to enjoy the Show and each will receive a small gift on arrival. “We’d like to thank all our sponsors for their support, especially our overall show sponsor, David Wilson Homes, whose help makes running the day possible.”

veryone is familiar with the song of the Cuckoo, but how many people know what this bird looks like, or have even seen one? Sadly this once Photo: Andy common species is Hay becoming rarer in the UK RSPBdue to the loss of suitable images. habitat and drought in com Africa. It is in fact a striking bird, sometimes mistaken for a small bird of prey, such as a Sparrowhawk, with a slim body, long tail, small head and pointed wings. It is blue-grey above, with black and white striped underparts, and has a short, slightly curved bill. It is, infamously, a brood
parasite – meaning that it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, which then raise the cuckoo chick as their own. When it hatches, the Cuckoo chick instinctively pushes any other eggs from its
host species out of the nest so that it can benefit from all the food the parents bring. Despite being raised by another species, the juvenile Cuckoo manages to make its way to central and southern Africa in the Autumn. Common host species are Reed Warbler, Dunnock and Meadow Pipit, but nests of more than a hundred other species have been used by Cuckoos. As well as the familiar “cuck-oo”, it also has a harsh guttural call in flight, and the female has a rapid bubbling call.

RSPB’s Big Wild Sleep Out very year, the RSPB encourages the nation to sleep under the stars to discover more about wildlife at night. What goes on in your garden at night? While you’re tucked up in bed, the natural world comes alive as nocturnal creatures go about their lives under cover of darkness. Bats may start to hunt for moths and other flying insects at dusk. They find their way by echolocation, and the calls of each species have a different frequency range. Two of the most common UK bats are common Pipistrelle and Noctule. The Nightingale (now rare in the North) is not the only bird that carries on singing as night falls – Robins, Blackbirds and Song Thrushes can all still be heard as the sun sets. Of course, Tawny and other owls are the truly nocturnal birds, more often heard than seen as they set off to hunt at nightfall. Many UK mammals only emerge at
night when human activity is at its lowest. These include small rodents, such as mice and voles, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers. You would be lucky to see any of these on your sleepout but you could certainly hear their squeaks and rustlings, and perhaps the strange barking of the fox. For more of a group activity, you could join in with events planned at RSPB reserves, where you are more likely to see and experience a variety of wild creatures, with experts on hand to help. The Big Wild Sleepout is a way of getting kids out and about, away from screens, and connected to nature. To take part in the Big Wild Sleepout 2017, from 28th – 30th July,
you can camp out in your garden or pitch up at an RSPB reserve. RSPB Fairburn Ings is holding an event on Saturday 29th July, which also includes daytime activities. Apply online now for a free pack full of ideas and goodies, at ww2.rspb.org.uk/ kids-and-schools/kids-and-families/bigwild-sleepout

A Jungle in Roundhay! The Jungle Garden is a lush rainforest of a suburban garden and the brainchild of Roundhay resident Nick Wilson, who is opening his little corner of tropical paradise to the public for charity on Sunday 25th June, 1 – 5pm, as part of Roundhay Open Gardens; and on Sunday 30th July, 11am – 5pm, for the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) Gardens for Charity. Beneficiaries include Marie Curie and Macmillan. Nick’s inspiration for the ’Jungle’ garden style was born out of a few holidays to Cornwall, visiting the lush, tropical looking gardens of Trebah, Trellisick and Glendurgan he came away with the idea of trying to create something similar in Yorkshire. A multi-level suburban garden with jungle style planting areas and accents of hot tropical colour all connected by boardwalks and bark paths, crown lifted trees create an overhead canopy. Tracy Takes Silver at Chelsea!
Pictured: Gary Verity with Tracy.
e are absolutely thrilled that garden designer Tracy Foster, our regular ‘Garden Round Up’ columnist, recently won a Silver Award for her ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. The response from the public was overwhelming. Tracy took her inspiration from the stunning Yorkshire coastline. The design included a cliff, beach, moving sea and a ruined abbey, and required eight tonnes of Scarborough sand, 11 tonnes of Yorkshire chalkstone, nine tonnes of sandstone and two tonnes of pebbles from Flamborough to construct, and it featured 3,000 coastal trees and plants. “I’m delighted people loved this garden as much as I loved designing and building it”, said Tracy. “The reactions were fantastic and touching as people with connections to Yorkshire described how the garden took them back there and those who had never seen the county’s beauty first hand said a visit was now top of their bucket list.” “Our Chelsea gardens are designed to showcase the county to the world and this one did that perfectly”, said Gary Verity, Chief Executive, Welcome to Yorkshire. “The reaction of show visitors was incredible and we hope many of them will now pay a visit to the county we are all so proud of.”
HIGH PRAISE FOR THE EXTERIOR CLEANING EXPERTS In the ten years since they were established, Northern Restoration High Pressure Cleaning Services has gained an excellent reputation for high quality workmanship and superb customer service. The company specialise in a whole range of exterior cleaning services for residential and commercial clients, from driveway and decking cleaning to roof and gutter cleaning, UPVC windows and conservatories and even graffiti and gum removal. M.D. James Weaver gave us an insight into Northern Restoration’s unique approach. “Our objective is to carry out professional work at an affordable price and ensure all our customers are entirely happy before we ask for a single penny.” A scan of the company’s website at www.northernrestoration.co.uk reveals that this strategy is paying off handsomely. Joan from York says of their service: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to Northern Restoration for completely transforming my home. They cleaned everything, roof, gutters, wall, windows, driveway and decking leaving the house to look like a new home.” Others have also praised the high quality of workmanship from the team: “We are delighted with the results. The two chaps who did the work were professional, prompt and cleaned up very quickly and efficiently. They went to pains to ensure we were happy with the cleaning and I really couldn’t recommend them enough.” (Michelle- Harrogate). In addition to their cleaning services, Northern Restoration provide a range of after-care services including: re-sanding and sealing block paving, decking and fence treatments, grouting and repointing and concrete and tarmac repairs. July is usually a busy month outdoors for wildlife as well as gardeners.
I love the idea that our gardens offer food and homes to all sorts of visiting creatures, dragonflies to toads and frogs, birds or fox cubs.
Wild things I love the idea that our gardens offer food and homes to all sorts of visiting creatures. From dragonflies to toads and frogs, birds or fox cubs they are all fascinating to watch and learn about – even some of the less popular visitors are actually doing some good. Did you know that wasps eat lots of garden pests such as aphids? And they also pollinate herbs and flowers. If you are very lucky you might see baby hedgehogs visiting your garden. A litter of three to five young is average and they stay with their mother until they are a few weeks old. Putting out hedgehog food or meaty flavoured dog or cat food will encourage them to visit, but no milk please as it can make them unwell. You can encourage all sorts of visitors to your garden just by creating places for them to live and shelter and no special skill is required – a pile of sticks tucked away at the back of the border is ideal. This is a great way to
use sticks and stems that are too woody to go on the compost heap.
Other Jobs Water plants well in dry weather. Plants growing in pots and baskets will need feeding regularly too. Greenfly can be removed by gently rubbing them off the plant they are infesting, or by spraying the plant with diluted soapy liquid. Cut flowers off lavender plants and hang them up to dry – perfect for keeping a drawer of clothes smelling fresh.
The vegetable harvest has really begun with all sorts of produce being ready to pick!
Kitchen Garden Herbs can be cut and dried or frozen now so that you can enjoy them for months to come. Fresh herb teas are lovely – just add boiling water and a spoonful of honey to a handful of mint for refreshing mint tea. The vegetable harvest has really begun with all sorts of produce being ready to pick including carrots, beetroots, strawberries, lettuce and chard to name a few. Garlic will start to turn yellow when it is ready to harvest – it can then be hung up to dry so that you can store it for use in Winter. And, of course, it’s not too late to make sowings of vegetables – try lettuces, rocket, French beans and radishes.

FILM
REVIEW
THE LEVELLING DIRECTED BY: HOPE DICKSON LEACH STARRING: ELLIE KENDRICK, DAVID TROUGHTON, JACK HOLDEN
CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 83 MINS riter-director Hope Dickson Leach marks herself out as a filmmaker with considerable promise with this excellent and affecting debut feature. Hearing of the death of her younger brother, Clover (Ellie Kendrick) returns to her family farm in Somerset which has been ravaged by floods six months previously to learn more about the circumstances surrounding his death and make the necessary funeral arrangements. This also involves a strained attempt at reconnection with her father Aubrey (David Troughton) after a lengthy period of estrangement. While Aubrey maintains that his son, Harry’s, death was the result of an accidental gunshot wound occurring the night of a drunken party to celebrate Harry’s inheritance of the farm, Clover comes to suspect it may have been suicide. As Clover becomes aware of happenings on the farm in her absence, she is forced to reckon with her past choices and family relationships. As an intense and focused family drama The Levelling deals powerfully with the themes of loss, grief and guilt. The wider context and background to the story is built piece by piece in a way which renders the eventual emotional pay off extremely impactful.
Well drawn characters are brought to life by an extraordinary pair of performances
With a limited cast, the film is almost a two-hander centering around Clover and Aubrey, well drawn characters brought to life by an extraordinary pair of performances. Aubrey, a widower, is clearly a deeply wounded man numbing his pain with whiskey and attempting to put a brave face on his grief with a forced show of cheery bluster. He keeps his love for his children locked away as he does the shotguns in the farmhouse, with a similar false sense of security and potential for explosive revelation. As Clover, Ellie Kendrick delivers an extraordinarily nuanced performance managing to convincingly convey a conflicting swirl of emotion. Clover oscillates between sadness and anger, struggling to navigate the loss of her brother and her long standing, deep seated resentment of her father, while she tries to assuage the guilt she feels and manage her sense of responsibility. Taking place in the shadow of death there’s a bleak, weighty atmosphere to the film and the setting of a rural community devastated by flooding also gives the sense of a struggle toward recovery and of people working together to overcome desperation and despair.
Low key, subdued and melancholy, The Levelling is a grounded, thoroughly believable and deeply human film. It’s also very well shot with cinematography that infuses the dilapidated farm buildings and surrounding landscapes with a mournful beauty. Through its tight and considered structure over a relatively brief running time, combined with the first rate acting at its heart, the film skillfully takes one through the emotional journey of these characters to a satisfying conclusion that is deeply resonant and moving.

City Varieties Youth Theatre Presents ‘Loserville’
Each year the challenge is to find a musical that suits the large and very capable cast, and which will work on the City Varieties Stage
The City Varieties Youth Theatre Company present their sixth musical ‘Loserville’ at City Varieties from Friday 28th – Saturday 29th July (7:30pm plus 2pm Saturday). et in 1971, the show centres around Michael Dork, a self-proclaimed computer geek and his misfit friends Lucas, Marvin and Francis, who are about to change the world…but no-one knows it yet! When new girl Holly arrives in school, all of Michael’s dreams seem to be coming true – at long last a girl with brains who actually notices him. But when school bully Eddie unearths Holly’s dark secret, he sets his sights on ruining Michael’s future dreams. The show is directed by Lizi Patch and choreographed by Dawn Holgate with musical direction by Sam Dunkley and set design by Scott Thompson, assisted by Youth Theatre member Lucy Herbert.
“I am delighted to be directing our sixth full scale musical with the City Varieties Youth Theatre”, said Lizi Patch. “Each year the challenge is to find a musical that suits the large and very capable cast, and which will work on the City Varieties Stage. The cast, creative and learning teams, band and technical crew make my job a pleasure. After ‘Oliver!’ and ‘The Addams Family’, it was time to work on something with a whole different flavour and ‘Loserville’ ticked all the boxes. We hope you love the show as much as we have loved producing it. I guarantee a few earworms after you leave the theatre!”
‘Loserville’ was co-written by Elliot Davis and James Bourne, best known for being in the bands Busted and Son of Dork and for his song writing credits with the likes of McFly and Pixie Lott. Join the cast of 38 and live band for an electric, pop-rock score that will have you dancing in your seat. Tickets (£12/£8) are available from 0113 243 0808 or www. cityvarieties.co.uk
Allerton Grange Attends Summit on ‘Votes @ 16’ Campaign tudent Council representatives from Allerton Grange School recently attended the Youth Voice Summit for secondary schools and colleges at Leeds Civic Hall. Attended by over 130 students from 13 schools across Leeds, this was part of the UK Youth Parliament’s ‘Votes @ 16’ campaign – the top issue at their annual sitting in the House of Commons in November 2016. The Summit focused on giving young people a better understanding of voting and democracy and feeling more politically engaged. Workshops considered arguments both for and against reducing the age of voters, as well as brainstorming ideas about what schools could do to help students learn about politics and democracy. Speakers included three members of the Youth Parliament for
Leeds, and Minhaz Abedin (19), whose experience on Leeds Youth Council led to his current role as UK Youth Delegate to the United Nations. The ‘Votes @ 16’ campaign aims to encourage parliamentarians to take notice of the voices of young people by giving them the right to vote in elections and referendums at 16 and 17. The Youth Voice Summit has produced a learning package for schools to increase young people’s knowledge and understanding of politics, which will be used as part of the Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum.

A joint venture between pupils at a north Leeds primary school, Graphic Arts and Design students at Leeds Beckett University and community arts project Space 2 has produced a unique insight into one of Leeds’ most diverse suburbs. As well as doing an enormous amount of work in and around school the Year 5 children from Allerton Church of England Primary School, Moortown attended three university workshops at which they were challenged to explore what it is like to live and grow up in the Moor Allerton area of Leeds through photography, film, creative writing and by interveiwing local residents. The result is a glossy 56 page magazine entitled ‘We are LS17’ which is illustrated with some wonderfully atmospheric images that the children captured on single use film camera. Sam Kay, a Year 5 teacher at Allerton C of E Primary described the children’s input into creating such an informative record of local social history as really rewarding. “They all found the activities engaging and fun which really helped each child express themselves.” Joy Johnstone, the school’s Art and Literacy lead added: “Watching the children working on this project was so inspiring, it seemed the deeper they dug into LS17’s past the more they felt part of its present and its future.”
