SALES TEAM About a year ago, a small group of people, all aged over 60, joined the third Cinage project, part of the Northern Film School’s Cinage Research Project at Leeds Beckett University. The idea was to create a performance piece and present it to a public audience. Everyone had to be willing to take part in theatre workshops that involved writing, speaking, moving, playing and performing. Working with Teresa Bradshaw, Principal Lecturer in Performing Arts, they created a work called ‘Talkin' ' Bout My Generation’. Apparently, this took a considerable amount of persuasion and encouragement from Teresa! But the end result was a lovely piece of contemporary theatre about their lives and experiences of ageing. ‘Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation’ was included as part of the eighth conference of the ESREA Network – an international conference regarding learning opportunities for older adults. The play was really well received, the audience finding it both amusing and thought provoking.
Rachael Stafford rachael@northleeds
The group was then invited to take it to The Cornerstone Festival at Liverpool's Hope University in November. Again, it was a hit, with students joining in a fun Q&A session afterwards. Then, at a smaller presentation, they were approached by art promoter Richard Demarco, who invited them to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

David Smith It has taken some months to organise the funding, but they are off to Edinburgh this month representing Leeds Beckett and all those of their generation. The project has given the participants a new outlook on life, an awareness of what they can still offer, an opportunity to shine. Cinage members this year included Alec Clark, Teresa Domene, Sally James, Angie Smiles, Harry Venet, Terry Waddington, Ann Westand Jenny Zobel.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford
Michael Ernest Sadler (1861-1943) University Vice-Chancellor, Educationist, Art Collector In 1911 Michael Sadler was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Leeds following the sudden death of its first VC, Nathan Bodington. An expert in the field of education and a man of exceptional talent and charm, he brought the further gift of his passion for modern art. Over the next twelve years, against the dark backdrop of the First World War and its aftermath, he took the university forward and created a vision for its future, while playing a dynamic role in the city’s cultural and artistic life. He was 50 when he came to Leeds, returning to his Yorkshire roots. Born in Barnsley, the son of a doctor from a radical family background, he had been educated at Winchester and Rugby then Oxford, where he gained a double first. For the next ten years he ran Oxford’s Extension (adult education) programme, before being invited to join the Board of Education to take charge of policy research, reporting on education systems abroad and at home. Major national reforms were under discussion - then as now controversial and political. Bitter conflicts of belief and personality led to his unhappy resignation in 1903. A new professorship in Education at Manchester was created for him, part-time so permitting research, lectures, travel. He came to Leeds full of energy and ideas, bringing fresh impetus to the University, still small and financially squeezed. Some departments were in makeshift buildings; the main approach from Woodhouse Lane was squalid; the library starved; social and sports facilities lacking. He had a concept for the future, for a handsome and dignified setting for what would become a great civic university. But the overriding need was for secure funding, more posts and better-paid staff; a wider curriculum, research facilities – he worked tirelessly for these ends. Much of what he planned was limited or frustrated by the years of war and the depression that followed, but he set the standard for the future.
He believed the university should play its part in the city – no ivory tower! This got him in hot water when he responded to the Council’s request for help in the 1913 general strike – the TUC was enraged. But other connections were made, significantly through his passion for art. In 1912 he helped to found the Leeds Art Collections Fund. (The Fund continues today and has contributed many outstanding objects of art to the city’s collections.) He joined the avant-garde Leeds Arts Club and with his old friend Frank Rutter, curator of the Art Gallery, sponsored ground-breaking exhibitions of modernist works, many of them lent from his own collection – Post-Impressionists in 1913, Cubists and Futurists in 1914. Local people were introduced to new artists like Picasso, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Kandinsky - exciting, shocking, challenging. Local councillors and the press were perplexed! His superb collection was housed in his home at 41 Headingley Lane, a Victorian mansion (Buckingham House) – huge and impractical, freezing in winter, but with wall space for his pictures. His wife Mary struggled with it, and by 1912 his expensive collecting mania had run him into debt, much to her distress. Some pictures had to be sold, and from then on he restricted himself to more selective collecting and generous support for young and talented artists like Jacob Kramer, John and Paul Nash and many others who owed their living to him.

of modernist works, many of them lent from his own collection
Two of his artistic projects hit the headlines. In 1917 he commissioned the sculptor Eric Gill to create a war memorial for the university: a huge carved stone panel depicting Christ driving the moneychangers from the temple. When it was finally unveiled in 1923 it created a furore and was later moved to less publicly visible site. Another abortive project was his proposal in 1920, with the Council’s approval, to commission a group of young modernist artists to design mural panels for Leeds Town Hall. Coordination of the artists and their payment caused endless
In 1917 Sadler was asked to lead an important government commission to India on Calcutta University. It meant a difficult absence of some 18 months, but the resulting report was a significant landmark in Indian education. This work was rewarded with a knighthood. He resumed his duties in Leeds as energetically as ever, but in 1923 he accepted the offer to return to Oxford as Master of University College, where he remained until his death in 1943, still contributing to national educational policy – and supporting his beloved artists. In Leeds his departure was deeply mourned – there was a strong sense that he had changed the whole spirit of the university and the city. In Eric Gill’s words ‘In Leeds he seems practically to be a god’.

Life&Style ‘Natural Selection’ Celebrates a Diversity of Natural Forms In the latest exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery, artist Andy Holden and his father, ornithologist Peter Holden, explore the history of birds’ nests and egg collecting through animation, video, sculpture and music. A co-commission with Artangel, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and Towner Art Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery is the only gallery in the north to exhibit ‘Natural Selection’. It is the culmination of a fiveyear collaboration between Holden and his father, originating in Peter Holden’s authority in the fields of natural history and ornithology.
The exhibition celebrates an astonishing diversity of natural forms and embraces different ways of seeing. The first part – A Natural History of Nest Building – examines birds’ nests, and how and why they exist in such an astonishing variety of structures. In a threescreen video, various nesting sites are visited and the nest building habits of woodpeckers and weaver-birds, house martins and oven birds observed. Large sculptures, inspired by elaborate structures made by bowerbirds, consume the gallery space, alongside Andy Holden's collections of birds' nests and feathers. Other sculptures made by instrument-maker and wood-turner Geoffrey Leeson are based on the wave-forms of birdsong. And, in A Social History of Egg Collecting, an animated crow tells the story of the development of the practice from aristocratic pursuit, to boyhood hobby, and underground illegality. “Natural Selection brings together social history, natural history and art history in a beautiful and engaging way”, said Sarah Brown, Principal Keeper, Leeds Art Gallery. “The different but complementary perspectives of artist Andy Holden and his father, Peter Holden, explore the intricate connections between art and nature - and the darker side of our desire to collect objects of beauty.” Natural Selection is at Leeds Art Gallery until 2nd September. Katherine Morgan-Davies (Kitty) came to Swarthmore in 2015/16 to complete her Functional Skills Level 1 English. It transpired over a number of months that she had been born into a cult in London, had spent all of her life indoors, had absolutely no experience of everyday life, and had only recently escaped after 30 years in captivity! It was clear to her teachers that she had a good level of literacy and she joined a creative writing workshop, in addition to studying for her GCSE English. She showed a real talent for the written and spoken word, although she had never been to school. Whilst in captivity, she had access to books and read at every opportunity, albeit in secret. When the GCSE students did their presentations for the speaking and listening part of the exam, Kitty spoke eloquently and passionately about her chosen subject. In the creative writing workshop, she showed a talent for poetry and her teacher persuaded her to read in public for the first time at an open mic night. Since then Kitty
has read several times and developed in confidence. She passed her GCSE English with flying colours in August 2017, achieving the highest grade possible. She tells her story in her first book, ‘Caged Bird’, which was published in May 2018. Since it was published she has been in great demand with interviews on Radio 4, Woman’s Hour, Good Morning TV, BBC Newsnight and many of the broadsheet newspapers. Her story is one of courage, personal strength, determination and above all hope. She returned to Swarthmore in June to talk to staff about her life, her book and her hopes for the future. It was an amazing evening and they are all very proud of the part that Swarthmore played in her recovery and progress. Kitty has a place on a Preparation for Higher Education programme at Leeds University this September, with the view to studying for a degree the following year.
'The Measure of the Moon', a local history talk, will explore the role Leeds has played in the history of astronomy, photography and film, through a series of interconnecting stories spanning almost three centuries. Researcher Irfan Shah will show how inventors, scientists and adventurers connected to Leeds and were instrumental in everything from the creation of the micro-meter to calotype photography and the birth of film and will reveal the long forgotten locations where their work took place. The Measure of the Moon is a part of the Car Parks of the Gods (and other places of great and improbable wonder) project sponsored by the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society) The talk is free, no booking required, and will be held in Room 700, 1st floor, Leeds Central Library on Wednesday 22nd August, 5.30 – 7pm. Talk begins at 6, bar open from 5.30pm.

Sunny Bank Mills Heritage Open Days For the seventh year running, Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, will celebrate Heritage Open Days (7th – 9th September) with loads to see and do for the whole family. The Archive team’s focus this year is the First World War. Did you know, for example, that there were twelve mills and seven fried fish shops in Farsley at the time?! In ‘Threads of War’ you can have a natter with Nancy, a mill worker at Sunny Bank Mills, and hear her stories of the First World War and enjoy new displays inspired by the project (funded by Heritage Lottery and Historic England), including work from Spring Bank Primary School.
There will be tours round the mill at regular intervals over the weekend by the people who know it best – William and John Gaunt whose family has owned the mill for nearly 200 years. Sunny Bank Mills Gallery is also proud to be hosting the KPP Prize for Art Architecture and Design and, as usual, the Gallery and its shop and tea room will be a relaxing pit stop between activities, which will include the Aston Martin rally on Saturday morning and the return of the Rose and Brown Leeds Vintage Furniture & Home Fair.
There will be an interim installation of artist Eva Mileusnic's ‘Critical Mass’, celebrating the diversity of our culture as it gathers plaster ‘feet’ on its way round Leeds before its final show at LeftBank in January 2019. Their lovely Artists’ Studios will be open on Saturday too. Free tours, parking and entry to Mill. Disabled access.

Modern Nature: Exploring Our Evolving Relationship Photo: Daniel Meadows
with the Natural World
For the first time in human history, more people are living in urban environments than in the countryside, yet the impulse to seek out nature remains as strong as ever. A new photographic exhibition, ‘Modern Nature’, at the Hepworth Wakefield, explores our evolving relationship with the natural world and how this shapes individuals and communities. Drawn from the collection of Claire and James Hyman, which comprises more than 3,000 photographs ranging from conceptual compositions to documentarystyle works, ‘Modern Nature’ includes around 60 photographs taken since the end of the Second World War, through the beginnings of de-industrialisation to the present day. It features photographs by leading British photographers such as Shirley Baker, Bill Brandt, Anna Fox, Chris
Killip, Martin Parr and Tony Ray-Jones, and explores the merging of urban and rural landscapes, the rapid expansion of cities and the increasingly intrusive management of the countryside. A number of photographs on display, including The Caravan Gallery’s quizzical views of urban centres and Chris Shaw’s ‘Weeds of Wallasey’ series (2007–12), capture the ways in which nature infiltrates the city. Others, such as Mark Power’s ‘The Shipping Forecast’ series (1993–6) and Marketa Luskacova’s NE Seaside (1978) images document trips out to the coast and countryside, driven by the sometimes powerful need to escape urban life. They are by turns poetic and humorous, occasionally absurd.
A strand running through the exhibition will look at how children reclaim space for play and exploration, exemplified through works like Daniel Meadows’s National Portrait (Three Boys and a Pigeon) (1974), Jo Spence’s ‘Gypsies’ series (1974) and Paul Hill’s Legs over High Tor (1975). “Claire and I were delighted when The Hepworth Wakefield approached us about staging an exhibition curated from works in our collection”, said James Hyman. “The Hyman Collection seeks to support and promote British photography, and is especially committed to exhibitions and education, so we were excited to work with The Hepworth Wakefield on this exhibition and related events and fascinated by the theme that they chose to present.”

Leeds Playhouse:

Theatre Reverts to Original Name As West Yorkshire Playhouse closes for major redevelopment, Leeds Playhouse emerges with an exciting programme to ensure that this vibrant city theatre continues to engage audiences in the city and across the region. There wasn’t one dissenting voice when the announcement was made – after all the theatre is firmly rooted in the city and should shout it out – loud and proud! Despite major renovations, the theatre’s work will continue in a specially created pop-up theatre space behind the scenes, as well as at partner venues like Leeds College of Music, The Leeds Library, Opera North’s Howard Assembly Room and other venues across Leeds City Region. On the schedule for the new season are modern classics, contemporary revivals, popular well-loved titles, and new
commissions performed by the Playhouse's new Ensemble Company of Northern actors. The season opens with Jim Cartwright’s ‘Road’ (5 – 29 Sept), a brutally poetic study of everyday lives set on a forgotten Northern street on a raucous night. Directed by Leeds Playhouse Associate Director Amy Leach, it explores the spirit of a working-class community. Furnace Festival, which celebrates new work and artists, returns in October with Selina Thompson’s ‘Salt’ (2 – 3 Oct), and ‘Blackthorn’ by Charley Miles returns from 4th – 6th October. Both of these productions will be accompanied by play readings, workshops and sharings as part of the festival.
Artistic Director James Brining directs David Greig’s ‘Europe’ (12 Oct – 3 Nov) – a 1994 exploration of changing identities in a contemporary society. Set around a smalltown railway station, it follows the plight of two refugees as they arrive in an unnamed town near an anonymous European border.
Playhouse and Opera North join forces to present ‘Not Such Quiet Girls’ (29 Nov – 1 Dec). Inspired by the lives of female ambulance drivers during WWI, this play by Jess Walker and directed by Jacqui Honess-Martin explores female resilience from the front line.
‘Airplays’ (23 – 27 Oct), directed by Bradford-based Kash Arshad, presents four 15-minute radio dramas exploring migration by Yorkshire-based writers. It will be performed at Leeds College of Music and broadcast live on BBC Radio Leeds, In ‘The Things We Wouldn’t Otherwise Find’ (6 – 17 Nov), Emma Adams examines the role of libraries in the age of the internet search engine. This funny, provocative production will be performed in The Leeds Library ahead of a tour of Leeds libraries.
Nick Ahad's radio play ‘Partition’ commemorating the 70th anniversary of India’s partition and the creation of Pakistan returns to the Playhouse from 6th – 10th November. And, Leeds

Arts&Culture Left Bank Opera Festival with Northern Opera Group The Left Bank Opera Festival, featuring Northern Opera Group, turns its attention to opera’s longstanding relationship with stories, characters and music from Asia and runs from 22nd – 26th August at LeftBank, Cardigan Road. The headline production ‘The Original Chinese Conjurer’ with music by Raymond Yiu and libretto by Lee Warren tells the story of magician William Robinson who, in his efforts to enliven his act, adopts the persona of a mystical conjuror from China, keeping his real identity hidden to all but those closest to him. It is a hilarious and poignant tale of ambition, masquerade and, of course, magic! The production will be directed by Northern Opera Group’s artistic director, David Ward, conducted by Lewis Gaston, and designed by George Leigh. The cast includes Rosemary Clifford, Alex Haigh and Keith Pun. Both Raymond Yiu and Lee Warren will join Northern Opera Group to open the Festival.
A programme of free talks, discussions and events will accompany the production, including a family day featuring magic and art workshops and preperformance talks on different aspects of opera’s relationship with Asian characters and stories.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the way composers and writers have taken inspiration from the music and stories of Asia, and how those stories have been represented through opera”, said David Ward. “Raymond Yiu’s opera is a terrific way to begin exploring this. It’s a really tuneful, funny and entertaining opera, but also asks serious questions about why we are fascinated by archetypal notions of ‘the Orient’.” A new development for 2018 has been a design competition with Leeds Arts University to design the Festival’s marketing imagery, which was won by student designer Sophia Watts.

We’re All Going on a Summer Holiday! The infamous red double decker bus will park itself at Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 31st July to Saturday 4th August as ‘Summer Holiday: The Musical’ hits town. Based on the 1960’s film starring Cliff Richard and The Shadows, ‘Summer Holiday’ will include all of the number one hits from the movie, including ‘Summer Holiday’, ‘Bachelor Boy’ and ‘The Young Ones’, plus some additional Cliff Richard classics.
‘Summer Holiday’ tells the story of Don and his fellow mechanics as they travel together in the red doubledecker through Paris, the Alps, Italy and Greece. Along the way they pick up a girl group and a young American pop star who is on the run from her domineering mother.
Taking on the lead role, played by Cliff in the film, is singer-songwriter Ray Quinn, who shot to fame as runner-up in The X Factor in 2006, but is perhaps best known for ‘doing the double’ on Dancing on Ice. Ray’s theatre credits include Danny Zuko in ‘Grease’ and, more recently, ‘The Wedding Singer’ – which wowed Leeds audiences last August. The role of Jerry, the long-suffering agent, will be played by Wayne Smith; Sophie Matthew plays runaway singer, Barbara; with Taryn Sudding taking on the role of Stella, her controlling fame-hungry mother. Billy Roberts, Joe Goldie and Rory Maguire play Don’s fellow London Transport mechanics.
The show may not promise ‘no more working for a week or two’, but there will certainly be plenty of fun and laughter and ‘no more worries for me or you’! Tickets (from £20.50) are available from 0844 848 2700 or online at leedsgrandtheatre.com
RadhaRaman Folk Festival 2018 The annual, free, RadhaRaman Folk Festival returns to Leeds for its eighth year from 31st August – 2nd September. Once again, it will feature performances by Bengali and nonBengali folk artists presenting a combination of folk and classical music from different cultural traditions, and panel discussions.
Chowdhury, vocalist Sumana Basu, Sufi Amir Mohammed, Baul Shohid, Laboni Barua, poet David Lee Morgan, Juber Akhtar Suhel, folk dancer Sohel Ahmed, Dhamail dancers, and disciples of the finest classical vocalist in this country, Chandra Chakraborty.
The festival attracts some of the best folk performers in Britain, along with a few celebrated performers from Bangladesh. Immerse yourself in the mystery of the lyrical landscapes of the North through the haunting melodies of Bengali folk music and beautiful folk dances in interesting venues, including the top of Otley Chevin!
"This has become an international festival for the celebration of Bengali folk music and its philosophy”, said Amal Podder, one of the organisers. “It aims to tackle extremism with the magic of art and music and has successfully involved a large number of women and young people who otherwise might be excluded through religious and social barriers.
Organised by the Leeds-based RadhaRaman Society, there will be over 30 performers, including Baul Mokoddos Alom Udashi from Bangladesh, Leeds poet Ian Duhig, Schubert vocalist Eric Schelander, guest speaker Professor Shoaib Gibran from Bangladesh, folk singer Gouri
"The festival has become a prominent international festival, with audiences coming from elsewhere in Europe and artists from both Bangladesh and India."

Chapel Allerton Arts
Rolling into
Festival 2018
Moor Allerton Library! Over the coming weeks, Moor Allerton Library will once again play host to an artist extravaganza!
Chapel Allerton was recently voted one of the best place to live in the UK and, reveling in this reputation, it is delighted to present the 21st Chapel Allerton Arts Festival from Monday 27th August - Sunday 2nd September. This year the Festival will feature new, Fringe activities running alongside the main festival. These will include a Short Film Festival at Seven Arts on Monday 27th August; a Poetry Festival (also at Seven) on Tuesday 28th August; an Arts Trail in Gledhow Valley Woods (Thurs 27 Aug - Sun 2 Sept), Village Jazz Festival (30 Aug – 2 Sept), a Folk Roots festival (Thurs 30 Aug - Sat 1 Sept) and an extended Artist Cafe on Sat 1st September with artists following a circuit and performing at different venues. This is an exciting development for the Festival as it aims to spread the activities and fun throughout the whole of Chapel Allerton and not just Regent Street. Local arts venues and businesses will be hosting many of these new events, extending the community coverage of the festival and providing new artistic experiences.
Saturday will also see the popular stalls in the street around Well Lane, with family entertainment, food, craft beer, and an art exhibition in the Methodist Church.
Throughout July and August, there will be drop-in themed workshops with an artist. Each one will give children and families the opportunity to gain an insight into arts and culture using a wide range of media. In the library, there will be book displays linked to each theme, to provide further inspiration, support learning and development. The programme will include a wide range of artists and genres:
On Sunday morning, Churches Together hold their 15th Festival Hymns in Regent Street; followed by Village Jazz with jazz, blues and salsa until early evening. There will also be a vintage and classic car display around the corner in Well Lane. And, ‘The Land of Nod’ returns to Seven on Sunday with tales of deviance, ancient Greece and supermarket loyalty!
• Frida Kahlo – exploring identity and culture through self-portrait and symbolism
Chapel Allerton Arts Festival is run entirely by volunteers and there are still opportunities to get involved. They especially need help with stewarding. For this and full details of activities, events, performers, venues, tickets and times, please visit chapelallerton.org.uk
• Macramé hanging baskets using recycled objects and materials
Chapel Allerton Arts Festival is supported by the Arts Council, England.
• Spoken word artist – identity through words and performance. • Zines – Cherry Styles – art and activism using specialist collections
The 2018 artist club promises to build on the success of last year’s programme and is made possible partly through a grant approved by local councilors at a meeting of the Outer North East Community Committee.

CommunityNews Cllr Dan Cohen Alwoodley
and am looking forward to Jazz on the Village Green on 19th August. There are free band concerts every single weekend throughout the Summer across the city and details can be found at leedsinspired.co.uk/summer-bandsleeds-parks.
I have been asked a lot about what is happening with the proposals to create a bus lane along the A61, from Alwoodley into Leeds. The initial consultation closed some weeks ago and we now wait and hope some common sense takes hold. We have been told that a further consultation event will take place in September to present the final proposal, which will be subject to a further, fuller, round of consultation. Rest assured, I will share all the details and information I receive right here.
For many, August is the month to take a well-earned holiday for others it’s a time to enjoy the outdoors. Because of this it’s also a month when burglars will be on the look-out for properties where the homeowners are clearly out of town, or at least out of the house. At our monthly PACT meetings, our neighbourhood policing teams regularly give advice on crime prevention and it is certainly worth keeping some of this advice in mind, particularly in the month ahead.
Like many others, I enjoyed the recent Brass Band on the Village Green event
Use a time switch to have lights come on as evening falls, even better, use a few
time switches so lights come on and off at different times. If you have a house alarm, use it (it’s amazing how many people don’t). Ask a neighbour or friend to put your bins out and if the bins are empty, to put some rubbish in there too. If possible, ask them to enter your house and close and open curtains, so the house looks occupied. Check and double check that windows, that have been opened to give some breeze in our scorcher of a Summer, are closed and locked. Finally, try not to broadcast your holiday plans on social media, it’s amazing how far the message can spread through Facebook and Twitter that The Smiths are away for two weeks in Sorrento, at the beginning of August – information best kept to our nearest and dearest. For any and all local issues, Peter, Neil and myself are always here to help. Shadow Member for Children and families 07711 647 849 Daniel.Cohen@leeds.gov.uk
Yorkshire Dance Explores Impact of Dance on People Living with Dementia ‘In Mature Company’, a new project by Yorkshire Dance, will take dance and live music into nine care homes around Leeds over the next three years, starting with Halcyon Court (Hyde Park), The Grove (Pudsey) and Knowle Manor (Morley). The project is designed to explore the impact of dance and live music in reducing the loneliness and isolation of people living with dementia and its team of musicians and dance artists will lead up to 180 sessions per year. It will look specifically at the impact of touch as a therapeutic element of dance, and will include movement, singing, storytelling and conversation. Residents’ families and friends are enthusiastically encouraged to join in. The project will also use Dementia Care Mapping™, which involves observing how people living with dementia spend their time, their levels of mood and engagement, and the quality of their interactions. This will allow the ‘mappers’ to see what is working and which aspects of the sessions best engage participants. “In Mature Company is an important addition to the range of work we’ve been developing with older adults in recent years”,

said Hannah Robertshaw, Programmes Director, Yorkshire Dance. “We’ve also led a programme called Young at Arts which tackled social isolation by engaging older adults with a range of creative arts. We’ve developed a partnership with the University of Leeds to study the health and wellbeing benefits of dance for older adults. And, we’ve created hundreds of opportunities for older adults to experience moving together.” In Mature Company is part of Time to Shine, a six-year programme delivered by Leeds Older People’s Forum and funded through Big Lottery Fund Ageing Better.

Food&Drink It Certainly Was Fine at Fettle! If you are looking for a new taste sensation, you really can’t go wrong with Fettle at 73 Great George Street, just opposite Leeds Infirmary. During the day (7.30am – 6pm; 9am on Sat/Sun) it is a little café serving up great coffee and lovely breakfasts, lunches etc. then from Thursday to Saturday (6 – 10pm) it transforms into Fine at Fettle, producing some truly delicious food. Fettle has a lovely, friendly vibe, great décor and unobtrusive, ambient music that is sort of at the cooler end of easy listening. Every aspect has been carefully thought about – the hanging planters, the bunches of dried herbs hanging in the window, the comfortable chairs. And the crockery is gorgeous, with each dish being served in strikingly designed pottery. A bit of a feast for the eyes too!
they all worked so well together. It was an evening of sharing – I mean you just had to. It was “Oh taste this”“try this gazpacho”. It was all too good to keep to yourself. It was the same with the main dishes buckwheat noodles with mango, samphire, sweet chilli and added salt beef that was deemed ‘super-tasty’; edamame, pea risotto with truffled forest mushrooms; amazing seabass; and large tortelloni
The evening menu is not huge – which I always appreciate as choosing can sometimes be very difficult! What’s more, vegetarians and vegans are very well catered for. We started the evening with a basket of fettle breads, which were variously laced with herbs and spices like caraway, curry or dried fruit like apricot, and Sicilian nocellara olives. This was quickly followed by huge, juicy scallops with red pepper and savoury granola; a watermelon and tomato gazpacho that was simply divine; and an intriguing curried waffle with cardamom pickled cauliflower and gochujang miso cream – although each ingredient had a very distinct flavour
stuffed with pumpkin and sage, with sun-blushed tomatoes and cashew cream. I can tell you there was an awful lot of “mmmmm, mmmmm” going on. And yes, that might have been enough food, but the sides were too tempting – red chicory with a great balsamic dressing, kohlrabi, candy stripe beetroot, and cucumber, sesame tender-stem broccoli, and green beans. We discovered we weren’t crazy about kohlrabi! But there wasn’t a scrap of anything else left. Oh yes, it should have stopped there, but then there was a tempting Yorkshire
cheeseboard with Harrogate Blue, Fountains Gold Cheddar, and Wensleydale with cranberries accompanied by Miller’s Damsel crackers to share. And an amazing chocolate fondant with ice cream and seabuckthorn berry puree – yes, you read that correctly! No idea what they are but it was delicious! Fettle is BYOB – giving you the opportunity to bring along your favourite wine if you choose. The prices range from £6 for Starters; £12 for Mains; and £6 for Desserts. Fettle take dinner bookings via their website and ask for a deposit – which we think is absolutely fine. Many small eateries in Leeds have been really left in the lurch when people who have booked have neither turned up nor called to let them know that they wouldn’t be there – meaning, of course that they couldn’t give the table to anyone else. Stone Curlew
Home Garden
Photo: Andy Hay rspb-images. com
The Stone Curlew is a large and rather strange looking wading bird that migrates to the UK in Spring. It has a big head with wide yellow staring eyes and black pupils, but its yellow bill is quite short. It is mainly sandy brown in colour (to blend in with its habitat) and has pale stripes around the eye and across the folded wing. It breeds on bare stony patches among short grass, but also on sand dunes and desert margins. Apart from when rearing young, it is mostly active at night, its large eyes helping it to see at dusk. It eats a wide variety of small creatures, including earthworms, beetles and spiders. With its camouflaged plumage and habit of standing very still, it can be difficult to see during the day. Despite its name it is not related to the Curlew, but it does have a shrill curlew-like call. The UK population of Stone Curlews declined drastically in the 20th century, reaching a low of 160 pairs in 1985. This was mainly due to habitat loss and the increasing
mechanisation of farming, which meant that their camouflaged nests were inadvertently being destroyed. However, more recently, effective nest protection and marking schemes have reduced mortality successfully on arable land and the population has begun to recover. In 2016 there were around 320 breeding pairs, mainly in Wiltshire, around Salisbury Plain, and the Brecks, Norfolk. Leeds RSPB Group

Leaving the lawn a little longer in hot spells helps to stop it drying out so leave the mower blades high or don’t mow so often. Lawns will usually recover
In the vegetable garden it’s time for a second round of seed sowing for winter veg, including spring cabbage, carrots, kohl rabbi, pak choi, rocket and spring onions. If you allowed any plants to go to seed, now’s the time to gather and store it. Make sure the seed pods have dried out and the seed is ripe, then it can be shaken out and stored in paper bags or envelopes. Steer clear of plastic bags as these can cause the seed inside to get damp and mouldy. Harvest Cut flower patches will keep giving if you keep cutting, and there is plenty of fruit and veg that should be ready to pick this month. Runner beans and French beans need picking every couple of days to keep them producing new ones and the same goes for courgettes. Others to harvest include cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, peas, blackberries, raspberries and all sorts of other delicious fruit and vegetables www.tracyfostergardendesign.co.uk

Sound&Vision Film Review By Samuel Payne
LEAVE NO TRACE DIRECTED BY: DEBRA GRANIK STARRING: THOMASIN MCKENZIE, BEN FOSTER, DALE DICKEY, DANA MILLICAN, ISAIAH STONE, AYANNA BERKSHIRE CERT: PG RUNNING TIME: 108 MINS There’s barely a raised voice. Often they don’t even say a word. But with a sideways glance, you’re told everything has suddenly changed. This is ‘Leave No Trace’, the low-key film from independent director Debra Granik that has captivated audiences with a story inspired by real-life events. So what’s all the fuss about?
The plot is simple. Will and his adolescent daughter Tom have been living deep in a park outside Portland, venturing into town to collect just the barest of supplies. Their isolation is through choice and they live in constant fear of discovery by the outside world. They’ve managed to conceal their movements for some time, but now their camp has been discovered by the authorities and both are subject to an uncompromising rehoming programme with potentially devastating consequences. Based on the novel ‘My Abandonment’ by Peter Rock, the film is a pointed study of the life, relationship and values of a troubled father and his dedicated, yet rapidly maturing daughter. Unfolding over a gentle two hours, we’re shown how Will and Tom live a life free from the pressures of modern society. We also witness how they’re torn from a happy existence and processed by a well-intentioned yet inflexible system, forcing them to conform to an ordinary and socially acceptable life. Thirty years ago, a back-to-nature tale would have been an intriguing commentary on the hip and groovy craze of self-sufficiency. Today, in a digital world where children are plugged into technology and social media from birth, Leave No Trace questions our parental responsibilities in an over-mechanised and potentially destructive, narcissistic commercial society. By retreating into nature, is Will actually doing the best thing for his daughter? The film explores these ideas with the meandering momentum of a novel as opposed to a big screen drama. Debra Granik’s subdued and introspective adaptation is wonderfully unhurried, ensuring that the focus is always on character rather than incident. Mawkish melodrama and heightened emotions are sidestepped for nuances in silence and passive tension, allowing characters to develop a real-world depth. Even the handheld photography is downplayed, avoiding complex visual grammar for a documentary realism, complete with natural light.
The relaxed dynamic between Foster and McKenzie may leave some longing for a big dramatic collision but, ensuring that art imitates life, Granik holds her nerve and secures restrained performances where the slightest gesture or glance carries the greatest significance. In the film’s final moments there’s a masterclass of profound eye phrasing — there won’t be a dry one left in the house.
Debra Granik’s subdued and introspective adaptation is wonderfully Ben Foster plays war veteran Will with the look of a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. An understated yet glowering performance makes for a conflicting parental figure and his withdrawn manner provides a haunting, mysterious hook. Will’s duty and love towards his daughter seems to be unchallengeable, yet his urge to impose an isolated lifestyle on his child ultimately raises more questions than the film has full scope to answer. Teenager Thomasin McKenzie is a genuinely exciting breakthrough as Tom, a girl committed to her father but longing to belong to a wider world. Her performance is pitched with a naturalistic, retreating quality — proof that doing less often delivers more.
unhurried Tender, subdued and technically low-fi, Leave No Trace is about as anti-summer blockbuster as you could hope to find, offering an alternative experience to the usual bravura fare. This is a heartfelt and underplayed story which questions how we value society and our family ties, spoken with brevity yet free from any pressure of urgency. Those with the patience of mind to enjoy unhurried cinema should follow the trail and experience this special film. Like the people it presents, it exists somewhat outside of the norm.

Hyde Park Picture House Regeneration Approved Hyde Park Picture House recently received planning permission for an ambitious refurbishment project that will secure this much-loved community cinema for generations to come. The plans aim to conserve the rich heritage of the cinema’s Grade II listed building, including the restoration of its gas lighting and elaborate plasterwork. The scheme also features improvements to accessibility, upgrades to services throughout the building, and the introduction of a second screen in the basement. The project will allow the cinema to expand its programme and better serve the diverse Leeds community. The £3.6m project received £122k development funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2016, which allowed it to progress plans for a full National Lottery Grant application, due to be reviewed later this year. Leeds
Grand Theatre and Opera House Ltd. (LGTOH) the Picture House’s parent company, is running a fundraising campaign to secure the remainder. Contributions have already been confirmed from the Pilgrim Trust, the Gwyneth Forrester Trust and the British Film Institute. Leeds City Council has also pledged its backing, contributing significant match-funding that will enable the cinema to better serve the city's cultural goals. The Picture House is still welcoming sponsors who would like to help bring the project to fruition. “We’re very proud of the role Hyde Park Picture House plays in making our city so special”, said Paul Scholey, Chair of Leeds Grand Theatre & Opera House Ltd. “With audiences growing year on year, it’s important to
put in place a plan that preserves this gem of a building. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and backing from Leeds City Council, we feel more confident than ever that the future of this wonderful cinema is secure.” Building works are due to start in Summer 2019. Throughout the construction period, the Picture House will be staging off-site screenings and events around the city, allowing it to continue bringing the best of world and independent cinema to Leeds. St Gemma’s Midnight Walk is Back!
Medical Research Project Leeds Beckett University is looking for women aged 65+, currently not exercising, to help them in a research project on bone density and fractures. You would need to commit to attending the Sports Hall at Carnegie Research Institute, Headingley Campus on three occasions to have bone scans taken and to undergo some physical tests at the start, middle and end of the 24-week project.
The Leeds Midnight Walk returns for its twelfth year on Saturday 8th September with two new routes. This popular event has raised nearly £900,000 since its first walk and St Gemma’s hopes to raise another £80,000 this year. The 2018 walk will be ‘Neon’ themed to ensure that walkers stand out whilst taking on this challenge. A bright T-shirt will be included in your registration fee and you will receive a medal on completion. The two new routes (4.5 miles and 10 miles) both start at Leeds Beckett University in Headingley and will see participants go down into Meanwood before those undertaking the ten-mile route continue on into Moortown and the halfway point at the Immaculate Heart Church Hall, then return via the same route.
On the evening of the walk participants will register their attendance, collect their walker number and soak up the party atmosphere surrounding them with music, stalls, face painting, snacks and drinks. The walk will set off at 10pm.
These appointments are two to three hours long. In between participants are expected to do sets of leg exercises twice a week and arm exercises three times a week (roughly 30 mins for both).
Running St Gemma’s Hospice costs £25,000 a day, which is why they ask participants to raise as much in sponsorship as possible. Everything you raise, no matter how small, will be very gratefully received.
One group will also be allocated supplements. Food diaries are kept for three days on three separate weeks. Participants get the benefit of finding out about the health of their bones and how exercise and supplements might improve their bone density.
To sign up, visit https://events.stgemma.co.uk/events/leeds-midnightwalk/ or contact Alice on 0113 218 5570. For further information, email leedsmidnightwalk@st-gemma.co.uk

Do you have Type 2 diabetes? Do you want to increase your skills, knowledge and confidence in managing it? If you are registered with a Leeds GP, we are inviting you along to meet our NHS experts who can work with you on your goals by offering advice on diet and nutrition in a friendly space. Our programme is completely FREE and will help increase your knowledge and self-management skills.
But don’t just take our word for it! Michael, 57, attended the course in Woodhouse and said The LEEDS Programme transformed his understanding of diabetes. He said: “The course was absolutely brilliant. “After 15 years of being diabetic, I learnt more in three sessions than in the previous 15 years. “I have found advice about healthy eating invaluable as well as how insulin works and how to manage my medication. “By putting it all together and using the strategies they have told me about, I have definitely noticed the difference.” Empowe rin g

Bowmen of Adel Celebrate 70 Years
The Bowmen of Adel was formed in 1948 and has become one of the more successful archery clubs in Yorkshire. In its 70 years there have been champions at all levels, and international representatives. One of its founding members, Betty Wells, became the first Lady Master Bowman in Yorkshire in 1951 and both the women’s and men’s teams took National and Northern Counties trophies many times. David Aikin, a member since 1966, won the prestigious Scorton Arrow on two occasions and is currently organising his 40th Wharfedale Tournament for Longbow archers.
Today the club has nearly 100 members from all over Leeds, the largest in its history, who shoot in all disciplines. As a section of the Adel War Memorial Association (AWMA) members can shoot outdoors all year round and indoors in the Winter. The club hosts three tournaments a year, welcoming competitors from across the Northern Counties. It also runs regular ‘Have-aGo’ sessions for community and youth groups, and at local school fairs. To mark its 70 years, the club has already held a celebration Windsor Shoot at Polo Mints (which also marks its 70th anniversary this year), a team quiz about the events of 1948, and will be holding the AWMA Challenge later in the year where each of the other sporting sections at AWMA will compete against each other, after a little coaching from members of the club. The club will end its 70th year with a party for past and present members and VIPs from the Yorkshire Archery Association.
Fast forward to the present day and the club continues to see success with its juniors too. Maxwell Oakley (above) recently became the 2018 Yorkshire County Boy Recurve Champion, whilst his brother Tom won the U-16 Barebow Category at the Junior National Championships last year.
The club has huge enthusiasm for passing on the skill of archery. Anyone who is interested in giving it a try and unleashing their inner Robin Hood, should contact the club for more information. There are still a few places left its final beginners’ courses of the year. For details, visit www.bowmenofadel.co.uk

Beautiful creations made by some of nature’s most accomplished architects will be revealed in ‘Beavers to Weavers: The Wonderful World of Animal Makers’, a new exhibition at Leeds City Museum that brings nature’s ingenuity to life in spectacular detail. Through hands-on displays and activities, visitors can discover how animals have developed different ways of building their homes, making tools and traps to catch food, and even changing their appearance to hide from predators and prey. The beaver is one of nature’s most prolific and industrious builders. Fiercely protective of their ‘lodges’, beavers use mud, wood and vegetation to construct their dams and divert streams to raise water levels. Weaver birds weave beautiful nests in a myriad of shapes. They also group together forming huge structures that can last for more than a century and be used by hundreds of birds. And, tiny sponge crabs carry living sponges on their backs to blend in with their surroundings and fool would-be predators.
“The animal kingdom is the setting for some truly extraordinary feats of invention, far surpassing the efforts of even the most brilliant of human engineers and architects”, said Rebecca Machin, Curator of Natural Sciences. “Observing animal behaviour is one of the ways we can best connect with them. By looking at how and why they go to these remarkable lengths to create objects of such beauty and intricacy, we can understand more about the lives of the creatures we share the planet with.”
