A new exhibition at Leeds City Museum launches a nationwide programme to mark the tercentenary of the birth of Thomas Chippendale, celebrating his life as furniture maker, designer and entrepreneur. The exhibition, at Leeds City Museum from 9th February to 9th June, will show a range of his work including key pieces from the Royal Collection, Paxton House, Newby Hall, and Dumfries House. It will explore Chippendale’s rise to prominence, reflecting on the quality of his work, his workshop and techniques, his relationship with his clients, their commissions, and the legacy of the Chippendale brand. Showing objects from his early life, alongside hand-drawn designs, it features some of the best examples of his work, many on public display for the first time.

ADVERTISING Born in Otley in 1718, he made his name in London. His designs and superior workmanship made him one of the most sought after furniture makers of the 1700s, working in some of the most fashionable houses in the country. A large number of Chippendale’s commissions were for houses in Yorkshire. At Newby Hall he was commissioned to furnish the drawing room. The exhibition features one of the armchairs (c. 1774) and this, with the rest of the suite, are the only pieces of Chippendale furniture known to have kept their original upholstery. Chippendale created the furniture for the Robert Adam Dumfries House. The featured armchair (1759) is from the Blue Drawing Room, which also houses a magnificent Chippendale bookcase. Dumfries House and its contents were due to be sold in 2007. Prince Charles stepped in to stop the collection being broken up and to preserve the house as a visitor attraction. The house is said to contain around 10% of surviving Chippendale items in the world.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford Dr Samuel Smiles (1812-1904) Surgeon, Journalist, Reformer, Writer One evening in 1844 a group of young Leeds workmen, members of a ‘mutual improvement’ society, gathered in a dingy rented room to hear a talk by the editor of the radical Leeds Times, Dr Samuel Smiles, a passionate advocate of working-class education. He illustrated his inspirational talk with stories of famous men who from humble beginnings had achieved success and distinction through their own efforts and determination. So the seed was sown for the book that was later to make him a household name: the immensely popular Self-Help, published in 1859, constantly reprinted and translated into languages across the world over the following half-century. Samuel Smiles was a Scot, born at Haddington near Edinburgh in 1812, one of eleven children of strict Calvinist parents. At fourteen he was apprenticed to the local doctor, and later gained qualifications in medicine and surgery at Edinburgh University. He returned home but found few patients, so focussed on writing articles for the press on the issues of social justice close to his heart. Journalism beckoned as a possible alternative career, and in 1838 he was offered the editorship of the reformist paper, the Leeds Times. He accepted, hoping to promote his ideals of a fairer society. He was to spend the next twenty years in Leeds, where he married and his five children were born – ‘about the happiest and most fruitful period of my life’. The 1840s in Leeds were years of political unrest and economic hardship. Smiles was a passionate supporter of reform, pushing for electoral change, the repeal of the Corn Laws, working class education and research into unemployment and poverty. He wrote numerous editorials, he gave lectures, he took a leading part in the Leeds Parliamentary Reform Association and was active in a grass-roots committee investigating unemployment. He believed

in reform through rational negotiation and was deeply opposed to the violence of the more extreme Chartists, but in time he began to feel frustrated and disillusioned by the failure of this consensual approach. In 1845 he resigned from the Leeds Times and active politics, but had to find work to support his growing family. After a brief return to medical practice, he was appointed Secretary to the newlyplanned Leeds and Thirsk Railway. It was no sinecure. Work began on the line to Harrogate in 1846, but met with desperate problems in constructing the long Bramhope Tunnel, bedevilled by constant flooding and subsidence. The cost in money and life was crippling – twenty-four men died building the tunnel (their memorial still stands in Otley churchyard) and the company was almost bankrupted. The line finally opened in 1849. Meanwhile Samuel Smiles and his family had moved from town to the more rural surroundings of Woodhouse Cliff. Alongside his stressful work, he continued to write and lecture. He campaigned for

a national education system and for public libraries, and found time to support local initiatives – he was the first president of the Woodhouse Mechanics Institution and taught at the Zion School at Wortley. But in 1854, when the Leeds and Thirsk Railway was absorbed into the Leeds Northern, he lost his job and moved away to London, to become Secretary of the South Eastern Railway company. Over the next years he filled his evenings and spare moments with writing. His first book was the Life of George Stevenson (1857), its success prompting his publishers to go ahead with Self Help which instantly became an international b e s t s e l l e r (t h e y h a d

previously rejected it!) This was followed by Lives of the Engineers (1862) and three further books expounding his social philosophy: Character (1871), Thrift (1875) and finally Duty (1887). The titles speak for themselves. The double pressure of writing and working affected his health; he retired in 1871, but lived on, still writing, until 1904. By then the popularity of Self-Help and the social vision it embodied was waning. Later critics condemned S m i l e s a s m o ra l i s i n g a n d patronising, promoting a myth of individual social mobility, but his work continues to attract comment and reinterpretation. The ideas discussed in the dingy room in Leeds in 1844 are not forgotten, and in their time provided his listeners with some encouragement and hope.

The Leeds Library is hosting the launch of #foundfiction - a guerrilla publishing experiment that connects readers and writers across the world - on Thursday 8th February, from 7 – 10.30pm. The idea is that writers print out their stories, put them in an envelope marked READ ME, and leave it in a public space for someone to find. Then the finder is invited to share it on social media with the hashtag #foundfiction. Since #foundfiction started in 2014, around 100 stories have been found across the world and #foundfiction has grown an international network of writers and distributors. It has also printed stories in Polish and hopes to publish in more languages in the future.

The launch event at the Leeds Library is designed to promote the project and encourage more writers, readers and lovers of literature to join its community. The evening will include talks, film and spoken word. The presenters are Carl Hutton, Chief Executive, the Leeds Library, writer Lewis King, and Owen Clements, writer and founder of Open Letters. Poets Phil Pearce, Colleen Pilkenton and Rose Drew are among the spoken word artists. In addition, York artist Jay Sillence will be drawing a visual interpretation of the spoken word poems as they're being read; there will be a film montage of people in the #foundfiction community talking about how the

someone to find project has touched their lives; and the result of a ‘live writing desk’ where members of the public were encouraged to take turns writing consecutive lines of a story, which will be read out. #foundfiction is keen to hear from any creative writers emerging or established. They should email fictionfound@ gmail.com with stories up to 500 words, which will be printed and distributed for free. Anyone interested in attending the launch event should register at www.bit.ly/FF_launch

Arts&Culture Jamie Jones-Buchanan Joins Board of Red Ladder Pictured: Chris Lloyd (Red Ladder), Anthony Clavane, Jamie JonesBuchanan, Rod Dixon (Red Ladder Artistic Director)

Leeds Rhinos’ Jamie Jones-Buchanan is joining the board of Red Ladder Theatre Company, as it begins its 50th year. Jamie made his stage debut in ‘Leeds Lads’, Red Ladder’s 2016 production that brought together a 35-strong cast of professional and community actors. In addition to joining the board, he will play Doorman Dave in ‘Playing The Joker’, a play by Anthony Clavane about rugby league commentator Eddie Waring, which Red Ladder will be touring from February. Although in his youth Jamie’s world mostly revolved around sport, he was involved in school performances and was never shy about performing off the cuff.

a rush of success not dissimilar to those found in his regular day job. “It was nerve wracking but the gratification at the end of a good performance was like winning an important game.” Red Ladder works hard to challenge preconceptions about ‘who theatre is for’, breaking down barriers and making it accessible to everyone. This ethos of inclusivity is something Jaimie is fully behind.

He views his new role with Red Ladder as more about storytelling than performing, “I love stories and enjoy telling them. I have been public speaking and acting the goat for rugby league media for a while but I’d never performed in a formal context with a theatre company.”

“The company becomes a hub for people to fulfil their individual potential whilst being a part of the Red Ladder community. Making the performing arts accessible invites talent that has not been seen before, and the togetherness brings about community and a sense of wellbeing.”

Jamie found the experience of preparing for ‘Leeds Lads’ presented challenges and

Bach Still Strikes at the Heart The versatile Leeds Festival Chorus has sung in Latin deep in a Polish salt mine; in a Classical Spectacular at Leeds Arena; as part of Opera in the Park; and last Christmas it gave a sell-out concert of popular favourites with Opera North’s orchestra.

Its next, very different offering, will be in Leeds Town Hall with the acclaimed English Chamber Orchestra. The St John Passion is one of the most dramatic and emotional sacred pieces ever written by J. S. Bach. It has a powerful sense of urgency, but is also intimate, connecting with deep human feelings. The singers and orchestra will focus on the dramatic storytelling and exquisite lyricism, with the Chorus becoming a ferocious crowd calling for Christ’s Crucifixion but will also deliver the sublime chorales. Frequently used to complete a scene, these are four-part harmonisations of simple melodies which often sound familiar. In Bach’s time a congregation would be expected to join in. Simon Wright, the Chorus’s artistic adviser, will conduct. The soloists are tenor James Gilchrist (tenor), Christopher Purves (bass), Elin Manahan Thomas (soprano), Lawrence Zazzo (countertenor), Joshua Ellicott (tenor) and David Wilson-Johnson (bass). Please note that this concert starts at 6.30pm on Saturday 24th March 2018. Tickets are available from the box office on 0113 376 0318.

Smash-Hit Political Drama Kicks Off New Season at WYP James Graham’s critically acclaimed, prescient political drama This House is at West Yorkshire Playhouse 23rd February – 10th March, marking the opening of the Playhouse’s Spring / Summer season. Roll back the years to 1974. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In an era of chaos, both hilarious and shocking, fist fights break out in the parliamentary bars, high-stake tricks and games are played, while sick or dying MPs are carried through the lobby to register their crucial votes as the government hangs by a thread. This House strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes; the whips who roll up their sleeves and on occasion bend the rules to shepherd and coerce a diverse chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.

This House is directed by Headlong Artistic Director Jeremy Herrin (People, Places and Things,), and designed by Rae Smith (War Horse, Barber Shop Chronicles, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe), with lighting design Paul Constable, music by Stephen Warbeck, choreography by Scott Ambler and sound by Ian Dickinson.

Arts&Culture Phoenix Dance Theatre Commemorates Windrush ‘Windrush: Movement of the People’ is a major new dance piece by Phoenix Dance Theatre which premieres this month at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. It marks the seventieth anniversary of the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush – the ship that brought the first large group of immigrants from the Caribbean to the UK. “I wanted to capture both the excitement and the upset of this significant event”, said Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance and choreographer of Windrush. “Windrush will highlight both the struggles and the good times the Jamaican community experienced during those early years. It is an uplifting dance production that shines a light on an important era of the history of black people in the UK.” The 492 immigrants were invited by the UK government, but were not always welcomed - the production will capture the daily exclusion and racism that the newcomers faced.

“People were excited to come to the UK on the promise of work and a better life, but it was not the case for all”, said Sharon. “Britain was recovering from the war and needed help to rebuild the country, but the stories they told were of a bittersweet experience. My family was not on the SS Windrush but did come to the UK as part of the first wave of people that was to become known as the ‘Windrush Generation’.” Inspired by the images of the immigrants filing off the gangplank, the dancers create unforgettable characters and uncomfortable scenes that take the audience from Jamaica to the UK. The

Windrush highlights the struggles and the good times the Jamaican community experienced during those early years

production also celebrates how the Windrush generation began to create its own opportunities, setting up churches and establishing a ‘black culture’. Calypso musicians Lord Kitchener, Lord Beginner, Lord Woodbine and singer Mona Baptiste were all among the ship’s passengers who paid £28 for their passage. “When I was undertaking the research for this project I was delighted to discover these major musicians were part of the story. What greater gift for a choreographer than to be handed a part of the soundtrack?” ‘Windrush’ fuses music and dance to create an inspiring production that uses a multi-cultural cast to tell an international story and

celebrates a culture that is now part of the country’s fabric. From 1948 to the present day, from Calypso to RnB via Blues, Ska and Reggae, composer Gary Crosby, together with Christella Listras from Caution Collective, support the story with an uplifting soundtrack to the lives of the Caribbean British people and wider Black British Communities. Windrush: Movement of the People is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 7th – 10th February at 7.30pm. Tickets (£13.50 - £31) are available from 0113 213 7700 or online at wyp.org.uk

Red Ladder Theatre Company was recently awarded £36,000 by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to further its Northern Social Circuit programme, which addresses the underrepresentation in theatre of people from working class backgrounds. The grant will support its development over two years - and follows funding from Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Fund to originate the Northern Social Circuit in 2016. This now forms a core part of Red Ladder’s programming. Red Ladder has been championing access to theatre for all for nearly 50 years. They will continue to produce new work, taking commissioned or specifically adapted new writing

by national and Yorkshire-based writers into non-traditional venues such as football and rugby clubs, pubs and working men’s clubs. They will also introduce a Community Skills Development Programme which will help participating venues to build the skills and knowledge needed to present an arts programme for their own communities. This includes receiving access to resources and mentoring from Red Ladder and three hub venues: West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Civic, Barnsley and CAST Doncaster. “The Skills Development Programme complements the wider work that Red Ladder Theatre Company is doing

to open up the arts in the North”, said Moira Sinclair, Chief Executive of Paul Hamlyn Foundation. “By strengthening the support that is available for local people to be linked to local venues, more communities will not only feel involved in the work but actually be a part of it. The skills gained by participants in the programme will help community spaces to operate as vibrant non-traditional theatre venues. This, together with the efforts to take theatre to unusual places through strategic touring, will create opportunities for even more people to widen and deepen their relationship with the arts.” www.redladder.co.uk/

CommunityNews Interwoven Histories – Creative Opportunities for Older BME People The community support organisation Touchstone’s BME Dementia Service has partnered with visual arts organisation Pavilion to deliver a project that aims to engage older people in creative arts workshops.

WW2 Bench Unveiled at Allerton Grange Fields A new park bench, funded by Moortown and Roundhay Councillors was recently unveiled at Allerton Grange Fields by Deputy Lieutenant Stan Hardy, The Queen’s representative in West Yorkshire, as a poignant commemoration of World War 2.

Art and creativity are great ways to boost confidence, develop new skills and express yourself, and Touchstone hopes these workshops will provide regular opportunities for elders to socialise, celebrate culture and build new friendships. Artist Carol Sorhaindo ran the first two sessions with members of the Hamari Yaadain Dementia Café, which meets regularly to learn more about dementia and difficulties with memory, share experiences, and access support from the BME Dementia Service.

Working with materials of cultural significance has encouraged the group to talk about their journeys of migration and the significance of their heritage combined with the experience of living in Britain. In the second session, using the buddleia plant and its resilient roots as a symbol of migration and strength, members discussed their roots and what kept them strong in times of change.

The first workshop worked with saffron and oak dyes, using block printing techniques to create intricate patterns of plants and flowers. One member

Oakwood Farmers’ Market Celebrates Ten Years Taking place at the Oakwood Clock every third Saturday of the month from 9am – 12.30pm, the market is now a firm fixture and 2018 marks its tenth anniversary.

There will be celebrations throughout the year and 19th May will be its special birthday market when BBC Look North’s Amanda Harper will be its special guest. The market is a mixture of established regular stalls selling bread, meat, fish, eggs, cheese, vegetables (organic and non-organic), soups, pies, fruit juices and much more. The market also presents a range of guest stallholders and seasonal produce, plus the opportunity for coffee and snacks while you meet up with friends and pick up information about what is happening locally. Oakwood market is a lively, family friendly place and community hub. Sometimes there’s live music and you can also take a look at the incredible

edible bed, showcasing the sorts of fruit and veg which can be grown locally. Those attending the market are encouraged to bring reusable shopping bags in an effort to create a plastic bagfree zone. CommunityNews Sue Ryder Wheatfields’ Mothers’ Day Campaign Wheatfields Hospice Mother’s Day campaign hopes to raise £11,000 – enough to cover the cost of running all its services for one day.

We’re also launching a brand new event this year “We're also launching a brand new event this year”, said Peter Watson, Senior Community Fundraiser. “Our ‘Walk for Wheatfields’ is on Saturday 10th March. Join us to celebrate this special occasion by walking five miles along the Meanwood Valley trail finishing in Golden Acre Park. Whether you are walking in memory of a loved one or to have a fun with family and friends, it's going to be a very special day.”

All care services at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice are completely free to patients and their loved ones. However, it costs £4m to run the hospice and only part of this is covered by statutory funds. Every year the hospice needs to raise over £2.2m to continue to provide its specialist care services. Last year the community nurse specialists provided over 4,000 home visits; almost 500 people attended the day therapy unit and over 700 people received bereavement support.

Dear Alwoodley Resident, As your local councillors we’re here to help make Alwoodley better for all of us who live here. In recent years here are some of the things we have helped with: • The installation of Speed Indicator Devices on Shadwell Lane and King Lane, with more to come in 2018. • The construction of the small, effective barriers on Alwoodley Village Green, to discourage unwelcome visitors. • The resurfacing of The Avenue, taking it from the roughest to one of the smoothest streets in Alwoodley. • Persuaded the Planning Directorate to leave most of Alwoodley out of their list of proposed sites for substantial residential development in the next twenty years. • Succeeded in having a drop-kerb pedestrian crossing on Shadwell Lane, for the residents of the Thackrah Court and the ever-increasing users of the Tree Tops Community Centre with another drop kerb crossing outside Highlands on the A61 coming this year. • Prevented the building of a primary school for Roundhay children on the Tree Tops play-ing fields. An extra 100 cars each morning in the rush hour on Shadwell Lane? No, thanks. We need new school places—but not on our community centre and field. • Made grants to literally dozens of local groups, from Slaid Hill to Cranmer Bank.

CommunityNews ‘A Wind of Change’ is Blowing into Meanwood ‘A Wind of Change’ is a new, original community show presented by Common Chorus Theatre and InterACT Church and Community Partnership. The show has been created by and for people who live in, work, or regularly visit Meanwood. With the help of exciting theatre makers and writers from Leeds ‘A Wind of Change’ spins theatre, live music and storytelling into a yarn constructed from local tales, both real and fantastical.

The show explores the ever-changing nature of Meanwood and is inspired by real life stories contributed by the 50 or so people taking part. “The people who signed up really wanted to get involved in the community”, said artist Jo Lee. “It was so well organised. Our first sessions were made up of drama games, helping people to get to know each other and work together. Gradually Simon extracted information from us and the next thing we knew it was part of the script!” “It’s been a great experience”, said John Poulter, another participant. “Basically we turned up each week and played! It’s been hilarious but it’s also given us skills and the confidence to perform.

Simon Brewis of Common Chorus Theatre brought together the lead team – made up of storyteller Matthew Bellwood, writer Adam Z Robinson, poet and playwright Peter Spafford, and Uncanny Theatre’s Natalie Bellingham and Matt Rogers. He and Matthew Bellwood drew up an overarching frame story that split into four strands each led by a member of the team – Active people in the community; Anger; People at risk of not having their voices heard; and a physical comedy piece created by Uncanny Theatre. Adam Robinson combines storytelling and music and features a choir led by Liz Wellburn of Sing Meanwood; Peter Spafford’s segment is staged as a live radio play; and Simon Brewis focuses on active people in the community.

“Alongside this we’ve been sharing stories and out of these Simon has cleverly woven the whole show. The process has been challenging but hugely enjoyable as it’s been great to work with and get to know such an interesting bunch of people. I’m now really looking forward to seeing what finally appears on the stage!” ‘A Wind of Change’ will be performed at Stainbeck Church Hall, Stainbeck Road LS7 2PP (opposite Sainsbury’s local) on Friday 16th February at 7.30pm and Saturday 17th February at 3pm and 7.30pm. Tickets £5 (25% discount for pre-booked groups of 4+) Please book via buytickets.at/interactleeds, from Stainbeck Church Community Cafe (Thurs 11-2pm), or call Ness on 07961 535767.

Grit Bins For the first time in some years we’ve had a real Winter, so the many grit bins we have provided over recent years have been very well used. If the bad weather has highlighted that your street needs a grit bin, do get in touch and we’ll see what we can do. Unfortunately the Council no longer pays for these so we will need to fund it from our very limited ward members’ budget. Air Quality The quality and cleanliness of the air we breathe and air pollution in our city is becoming an increasingly important issue as it has a serious impact on residents’ health. The Council is running

a public consultation until 2nd March 2018, looking at ways to reduce air pollution. One of the proposals is to charge buses, HGVs, taxis and private hire vehicles entering the city centre (unless they meet strict emissions targets). What are your thoughts? You can find the consultation, together with supporting information at www.leeds. gov.uk/business/pages/air-quality.aspx

Details can be found at www.leeds.gov. uk/council/Pages/Site-AllocationsDevelopment-Plan-Document-(LDF). aspx

Air Quality

Looking ahead, on Thursday 3rd May 2018 there will be Council elections across the city, with all 99 Council seats up for election. Unlike normal elections, residents have the opportunity to vote for up to three candidates in each ward in Leeds (which includes Alwoodley, Roundhay and Moortown).

Alwoodley Councillors were dismayed to discover that as part of Leeds Housing Core Strategy, the city is proposing to do away with its original plan of phasing in sites to be made available for housing. This means that the site at the bottom of Alwoodley Lane, set aside for around 280 houses, will be made available as soon as the housing plan is finalised and not in 15 years as we had been led to believe. As a result, this part of the housing plan has been reopened to public consultation until 26th February 2018.

What do you think of this late change? You can write to the Council at sap@ leeds.gov.uk Local Elections

Home Garden The barn owl is a very distinctive and recognisable nocturnal bird of farmland, coastal marshes and forest edge. It has a heart-shaped face, honey-brown upperparts and snowy white underparts. Its wings are long and rather narrow, and shown to good effect when the bird is hunting at dusk. Typically, it flies slowly, low over the ground and sometimes hovers. Its favoured prey is mainly small mammals such as mice, voles and shrews, but it has also been known to take rats, small birds and even bats. As the name suggests, barn owls nest in enclosed spaces such as barns and ruined buildings, and sometimes in cliff faces or hollow trees. The female will lay four to six eggs and incubate each in turn, so that they hatch at intervals, and the oldest may be two weeks older than the youngest. In times of food shortage, when the chicks are not being fed enough by their parents, the younger, weaker chicks may perish and end up as food for the older ones.

Barn Owl Photo: Dave Braddock RSPB-images.com

The barn owl is widely distributed from Europe to Africa and SE Asia. The UK population is around 4,000 and has declined hugely in the last 50 years. The main factors that have contributed to this decline are lack of food due to intensive farming, the loss of roost and nest sites, road mortality, and rat poison.

HLF Awards Grant to Meanwood Valley Partnership Meanwood Valley Partnership and Leeds City Council have obtained a grant of £65,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a joint project that will help people to discover and protect the rich heritage and natural diversity along the Meanwood Valley. Starting in February, and led by the Leeds City Council Ranger Service, it will last for 30 months and cover all of the Meanwood Valley, which has long been celebrated as a ‘green artery’ from the centre of Leeds to the countryside. It has an extensive range of habitats and a wealth of biodiversity. The project will promote an understanding of the wildlife and its management by providing opportunities for communities to get involved through volunteer activity, wildlife surveys, Bioblitzes and other public events.

The programme will use mobile apps, web content and education. By encouraging as wide a range of people as possible to celebrate this wilderness on their doorstep, it aims to ensure its conservation into the future. Most of the funding will be spent on employing a part time Ranger for two years to deliver the activities, recruit volunteers and coordinate a range of volunteer activities. ‘Friends’ groups along the Valley will also be involved. Congratulations to Senior Ranger Daniel Malster and MVP Janet Matthews for their work in putting the successful bid together. If you would like more information, or would like to get involved, contact MeanwoodValley.Ranger@leeds. gov.uk, meanwoodvp@hotmail.com, or visit www.Facebook/MeanwoodValley

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster

Even in this most wintery of months, there are flowers to be enjoyed, and gardening to be done.

Snowdrops

What Are You Growing this Year?

Also known as Galanthus (meaning milk flower) the lovely Snowdrop adds a sparkle to February beds and borders.

If like me you love the thrilling process of sowing seeds, you will be pleased to know that there are some varieties that can be sown already, including lettuce, onion, peas and cabbages which can be started off on a windowsill indoors.

The sight and scent of drifts of Snowdrops are a tonic at this time of year, and there are several excellent places to enjoy them here in Yorkshire. Burton Agnes Hall near Driffield, Fountains Abbey near Ripon and Thorp Perrow Arboretum close to Bedale all have great gardens to visit for a touch of Snowdrop magic, usually from about the third week in January onwards. The National Open Gardens scheme also lists local Snowdrop gardens at www.ngs.org.uk

The other favourite job for the month is the choosing and ordering of seed for sowing in Spring. It’s fun to select some new and unusual varieties – I had great success last year with Tromboncino climbing courgette plants and purple French Beans and I can’t wait to try something new again this year including some flowers for cutting.

Checking and Preparing Practical jobs like washing out your seed trays and plant pots, checking tree ties are not too tight or loose, and getting the lawnmower serviced are best done now so that you are poised and ready for the Spring, when there are so many garden jobs to be done. www.tracyfostergardendesign.co.uk

York Gate Garden

at TCV Hollybush The Hollybush Conservation Centre on Broad Lane, LS5 3BP, runs a variety of environmentally based activities for adults – some are targeted at specific groups, but most are open to everyone.

Photo: Ben Charles

For the first time ever, York Gate Garden on Back Church Lane in Adel (LS16 8DW) will open its gates for a snowdrop week from 20th – 23rd February, 12.30 – 4.30pm. This charming one-acre garden, which is owned and run by the charity Perennial, will have many different varieties of snowdrops for visitors to enjoy, including show stealer Galanthus ‘S. Arnott’. The warm and inviting, recently refurbished tearoom will be open for lunches, afternoon teas and home-baked treats. The gift shop will also be open. And, York Gate’s gardeners, supported by a team of volunteers, will be on hand to welcome visitors.

Designed in the Arts & Crafts style, York Gate is regarded as one of the UK’s best small gardens, created by the Spencer family during the 20th century. It is designed around a series of 14 outdoor rooms, each with its own unique character, laid out on a framework of yew and beech hedges and York Stone and granite paths. Its intimate scale makes it particularly appealing and snowdrop week gives visitors the rare opportunity to explore the garden during its closed season.

There are Practical Projects every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (9.15am - 4.30pm). The TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) minibus will take you to work on sites across West Yorkshire planting trees, mending footpaths, or building wildlife areas. Occasional and regulars volunteers are most welcome. The Centre also runs short courses in woodwork, bushcraft, gardening, natural crafts and practical conservation. Courses run every school half term. Learn to build a garden bench, light a fire without matches, make the most of your garden or window ledge, or have a go at dry-stone walling. There are half day Green Gym gardening sessions at Hollybush, and at sites across Leeds from March; and weekly Wildlife and Countryside Walks.

Standard admission £5/ children (U-16) Free. Friends (plus one guest) Free

Volunteers are needed to help staff deliver sessions and support those less able on all these activities, and in the on-site café (Tuesday to Friday 10.30 to 3pm).

Sound&Vision Film Review By Brendan Campbell

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI DIRECTED BY: MARTIN MCDONAGH STARRING: FRANCES MCDORMAND, WOODY HARRELSON, SAM ROCKWELL CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 115 MINS Martin McDonagh, playwright and writer/director of the brilliant ‘In Bruges’ and the less successful but still worthwhile ‘Seven Psychopaths’, seems to have hit pay dirt with this clunkily titled, blisteringly profane tragi-comic dramedy. The film has been garnering critical plaudits since doing the rounds on the festival circuit and early awards season triumphs have it tipped as an Oscar frontrunner, along with the inevitable accompanying backlash and chorus of detractors, more on which later.

Frances McDormand plays Mildred Hayes, an inhabitant of the titular small town whose daughter has been raped and murdered seven months previously. Exasperated and embittered by what she sees as police negligence and incompetence in failing to bring the perpetrators to justice, she purchases advertising space on a trio of billboards on the town’s outskirts which, in stark, bold typeface demand answers for the lack of arrests, calling out the head of the local police department, Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) by name.

Somber and macabre but also irreverent and frequently darkly hilarious, the film upends ones presumptions and expectations The provocative move predictably raises hackles, understandably with Willoughby himself but also other townsfolk and particularly the moronic, bigoted and volatile Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell). As tensions flare, buttons are pushed, stakes are raised and Mildred’s crusade for justice escalates into a one-woman war against the cops. She fought the law and… well, you’ll have to watch to see who, if anyone, wins.

cantankerous, take-no-crap, screwyou attitude which is frankly exhilarating to behold. She’s a badass avenging angel taking to task those who would let a vile crime go unpunished. But, as magnetic as Mildred is, even our support for her plight is tested as her actions and methods become increasingly questionable. Central to the effectiveness of Three Billboards is this very upending of presumptions and expectations and it’s what makes it so compelling, surprising and enjoyable.

Three Billboards… is an unusual film which perhaps shouldn’t come together as well as it does. It’s uneven and flawed with sometimes jarring tonal shifts while also often disarmingly moving. It’s peopled with striking, fully realised and fleshed out characters while the action unfolds with plot machinations which strain plausibility and an occasional air of heightened unreality verging on melodrama. It’s somber and macabre but also irreverent and frequently darkly hilarious. Above all, it’s morally ambiguous and sometimes seems to enjoy toying with the loyalties and sympathies of its audience. This would seem to be the chief bugbear among the film’s naysayers with many taking issue with the film’s treatment of Sam Rockwell’s racist cop who is offered a path to redemption or even absolution which critics feel is unearned and undeserved. The fact that the film’s black characters are largely sidelined adds some weight to this argument though it remains a matter of debate. Dixon is known to have tortured a black prisoner while in custody and this information flippantly forms the basis of a witty back and forth between Dixon and Mildred. Dixon’s racism mainly serves to underscore the unpleasantness of his character and isn’t really reckoned with in any meaningful way. Similarly complicated is how the audience responds to Mildred herself. Her grief, compounded with rage at the police’s failures, not to mention her survival and escape from an abusive relationship, have hardened into an uncompromising,

It could be argued that Three Billboards… can’t quite figure out what kind of film it is and thus it is very much its own thing; grounded with a sense of seriousness but shot through with a hysterical streak of comedy. If it were any less well written and acted it could’ve turned out an absolute mess but McDonagh’s sharp script is brought thrillingly to life by a trio of outstanding performances with McDormand, Harrelson and Rockwell at the absolute top of their game. Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri may not be a perfect film and it’s certainly proving divisive but it’s an engaging, affecting oddity with a great deal to recommend it.

Miranda Arieh Receives Social Impact Star Award Leeds-based musician Miranda Arieh was recently awarded the Social Impact Star award at the Inspiring Women Changemakers Ceremony in recognition of the work she has done to raise awareness of mental health through her music. The judges declared her efforts as 'potentially lifesaving'. One of the organisers of the Feel the Benefit charity event, which supports mental health services, she also runs a ‘Bring your own Baby’ choir, enabling women to enjoy singing and save on childcare costs. She has released five singles that have raised over £1,000 for mental health charities and played at countless events, rallies and fundraisers. Miranda also set up a not-for-profit events organisation called ‘Feel The Benefit’, which puts on music and art shows in Leeds, raising funds for charities like The Royal Park Community Consortium, Leeds Anti Sex Trafficking Network (LAST), Leeds Mind and Time To Change. Most recently, she co-organised and played at part

of Love Arts Leeds Festival to raise funds for SARSVL and Women’s Counselling and Therapy Services. “My vision is to use my music as a platform to speak about challenges we are currently facing in our society such as ageism, mental health and women’s rights”, said Miranda. “The last song I released was about women being silenced, especially as they get older. I encourage them to ‘talk out loud’ about their experiences. “I’d love to meet anyone who could help me reach a wider audience with my music, and anyone who could help me fundraise on a wider scale for the mental health charities I am involved with.” Miranda’s new album ‘Ferine’ is released in March. The first single from the album ‘Soul Price’ will be released on 23rd February. Facebook: Miranda Arieh Music

Fran Wyburn Launches Debut Album Idiosyncratic, beguiling folk artist Fran Wyburn releases her muchanticipated debut album ‘Wood for the Trees’ at the beginning of March. The album takes one on an intimate and emotional journey of personal growth. Fran says she wants the album to be like ‘listening to a friend, snuggled up under blankets in front of a fire and sipping tea’. The diverse album tracks display the full breadth of Fran’s song writing. Unafraid to stand alone with just her voice and guitar as on ‘Me and Me’ and ‘Sorry Heart’, she also takes you to extremes with dreamy joyful upbeat songs such as ‘Happy Forever After’ and ‘Mr Blackbird’. More pensive, sombre songs like ‘Set Sail and Pass on By’, with piano accompaniment bring a darker energy to the fore.

The album offers intricate arrangments with soaring ethereal multiple harmonies, tender cello and sophisticated guitar such as on ‘Snowdrops and Me’, ‘Rumi Said’ and ‘Foolish Sea’. The album will launch with a live performance at Trinity Church, Boar Lane on 1st March. Fran will then undertake a UK tour of unusual venues and spaces - from front rooms to libraries and church halls – promoting community engagement and inclusivity, things very close to her heart. Alongside her music career Fran works as a Wellbeing Community Music Practitioner www.makemusicwithfran.com www.franwyburn.com

Leeds Neonatal Unit Seeks

video page, plus PR and marketing opportunities at a local and national level, as well as a positive association with a great cause.

Local Business Support LTHT Neonatal Unit is looking for a sponsor to fund a Secure Video Messaging application that allows nurses to send video updates to parents of premature babies. The service, which launched at St James’s Hospital in October, allows the nursing team to provide video updates for parents when they are away from their baby and helps to reduce separation anxiety. Once a parent has registered for the application, they can view, share and download videos of their baby so that precious moments are never lost. The technology provider, vCreate, funded the initial pilot project. Now, following an overwhelmingly positive response from parents, the neonatal nursing team is hoping to partner with a Yorkshire-based

business to fund the ongoing provision of the application.

For further information, contact 0333 121 8422 or theteam@ vcreate.tv

“Video messaging is a welcome addition to our pioneering family integrated care approach”, said Dr Liz McKechnie, Consultant Neonatologist at LTHT. “Receiving video updates provides reassurance during a stressful time and access to the secure baby-care video diary ensures that special moments that may have been missed, can now be kept forever.” Sponsors can expect their logo to be shown on the

Ideas for a Fascinating Half Term Half Term breaks seem to creep up on you before you have really had time to think about things to do – but fear not, others have been making sure you’ll not be short of ideas. There are theatre shows and fantastic exhibitions, animation magic, wonderful animals, and Leeds Library Festival returns this year too. Here are just a few suggestions….

Early Man at the National Science and Media Museum The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford is partnering with Aardman and STUDIOCANAL for its ‘Early Man’ Half Term event (10 – 18 Feb) – packed with film screenings, activities, displays of original movie props and behind-the-scenes tips and tricks for budding animators.

‘Early Man’ is the new feature film from award-winning director Nick Park and Aardman, creators of ‘Wallace & Gromit’ and ‘Shaun the Sheep’. Set at the dawn of time when prehistoric creatures roamed the earth, it tells the story of courageous caveman Dug (Eddie Redmayne) and his best friend Hognob as they unite his tribe against a mighty enemy Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) and his Bronze Age City to save their home.

In addition to seeing the film, you will be able to meet Aardman animation director Will Becher (Monday 12 February); See original sets, artwork and props; Take part in animation activities and enjoy animation workshops before film screenings; Learn about the technology behind animation in the Wonderlab Studio; Design a prehistoric catapult to help hero Dug escape, and create favourite Early Man characters out of clay Tickets can be booked via Picturehouse at National Science and Media Museum (0871 902 5756, www. picturehouses.co.uk) Full details available from 0844 856 3797, www.scienceandmediamuseum. org.uk

Warrior

There will also be demonstrations of ‘Suffrajitsu’, the Suffragette martial art of choice during their campaign for women’s rights.

Women take over at the Royal Armouries!

The Royal Armouries will play host to some of history’s most celebrated warrior women from Tuesday 13th – Wednesday 21st February (10am – 5pm).

From Joan of Arc to the Suffragettes, the museum will bring the stories of remarkable women who changed the course of history to life. There will be exciting talks, performances and havea-go activities. Performances include combat demonstrations, showcasing the fighting styles of renowned female warriors like Joan of Arc and 17thcentury swordswoman La Maupin.

Listen to the stories of Cartimandua, a first century Celtic queen, and hear about the experiences of women during the First World War. There will also be an opportunity to make Suffragette rosettes and join the fight for women’s suffrage in a march through the museum. “2018 marks the centenary of the passing of the Representation of the People Act, allowing women the right to vote for the first time”, said Gail Cockerill, Events Officer. “We think this is an especially important time to bring to light the fascinating stories of warrior women throughout history. The week will be filled with fun and activities for all the family, including talks and presentations that reflect the national curriculum.” www.royalarmouries.org/events

Warty Pigs Join the Lotherton Family

Half Term is the perfect time to discover animals from across the globe at Lotherton Wildlife World. Explore newly opened areas of Wildlife World and meet the warty pigs, who have recently joined the wonderful penguins and tapirs.

Lotherton Wildlife World tells conservation stories from around the world, whilst drawing on the travels of previous owners of the Lotherton estate, the Gascoignes. The penguins and exotic flamingos are native to Chile, while the bashful tapirs originate from Brazil. You can learn about endangered animals, plant species and Lotherton’s conservation initiatives as part of European breeding programmes. Journey through continents to

discover wildlife native to countries the Gascoigne family visited on their travels. Meet the animals during special feeding events and meet the Keeper sessions. And get to know the animals, how they live and what we can all do to protect their future.

Penguins at The Playhouse

‘Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Prime Theatre and Cahoots NI present ‘Penguins’ at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 15th – 17th February. This is a delightful new theatre and dance production of friendship, fun and identity, celebrating being different and the ever-changing meaning of family. Roy and Silo are just like the other penguin pairs at Central Park Zoo – they walk, play, swim and dance together. They are two happy boys, but when the zookeeper finds them trying to hatch a rock, he has a clever idea that could mean Roy and Silo raising a chick for real. The creative team includes awardwinning children’s director Paul Bosco McEneaney and international choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra.

New NSPCC Game Designed to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse The NSPCC recently launched a new mobile phone game to help keep young children safe from sexual abuse. ‘Playtime with Pantosaurus’ is available on iOS and Android devices as a free download and features four fun mini games where players test their skills against Pantosaurus and his friends whilst learning the PANTS rule (Privates are private, Always remember your body belongs to you, No means no, Talk about secrets that upset you, and Speak up – someone can help).

NSPCC research has revealed that as many as one in 20 school children will suffer some form of sexual abuse. Directing children to the PANTS game or downloading the PANTS activity pack from the NSPCC website will help make it easier and more natural for parents to have difficult and sensitive conversations about staying safe.

Each of the characters is customisable with their own outfits and styles, with further accessories and outfits available to unlock as children progress through the game. In between each level children are quizzed on the PANTS rule to help reinforce their understanding of how to stay safe.
