Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

Mary Edith Pechey- Phipson MD Pioneering doctor and campaigner In 1877 a remarkable woman came to live and work in Leeds. Her name was Edith Pechey, already well known as one of the tiny band of intrepid women who had dared to challenge the medical establishment, fighting – and ultimately winning – a long and bitter battle to gain medical qualifications and be allowed to practise. When she arrived in Leeds she was one of only seven women in the country who had won the right to be registered as a doctor.

Edith Pechey came originally from the village of Langham, Essex, the sixth child of the Baptist Minister there, born in 1845. She inherited a love of learning from her parents, and her first work was in teaching, but her ambition was to study and practise medicine, particularly in the field of women’s health. Many women died in childbirth and infant deaths were commonplace, yet obstetrics did not feature in medical training, and medicine was a totally male preserve. She met other women prepared to fight for the right to qualify, and in 1869 she joined four others applying to enter the prestigious School of Medicine in Edinburgh. They passed the exams for admission but had to be taught separately from the men, at much higher fees. They achieved excellent results, but endured insults and constant harassment, at one point braving a noisy, stone-throwing mob. And when Edith won a prestigious prize for chemistry, it was refused because she was a woman. This blatant injustice evoked letters to The Times and passionate confrontations in Edinburgh, where two professors refused point-blank to teach the women ‘improper’ subjects like Anatomy. Another claimed that medical education for women would be a ‘curse to civilisation’. The opposition won the day (afraid of potential competition?). The women

completed their studies successfully but they were not granted degrees and lost their legal action against the University. There was no giving-up – they sought to qualify elsewhere. Finally, after a year working at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital, Edith gained her M.D. in 1877 from the University of Berne in Switzerland (taking her exams in German) and acquired further qualifications in Dublin, enabling her, after more argument, to be registered to practise. Where next? She already had links with Yorkshire, where she had given courses of lectures on women’s health for the Yorkshire Ladies’ Council of Education. She also had contacts with the lively group of women (and men) in Leeds who were campaigning for better educational opportunities for women. Knowing she would have supportive friends, she chose to come to Leeds, setting up in practice in Park Square and living first in Warwick Villas, near the Infirmary, and then in a charming, seventeenth century house in rural Bramley. No doubt she encountered prejudice, but it is said that this was soon dispelled by her charm, intelligence, and generosity of mind. No details of her work in Leeds are known, but she may have had links with the Public Dispensary which looked after the needs of the poor, her particular care and interest. She was also in great demand as a speaker, giving

the keynote inaugural address at the opening of the London School of Medicine for Women in 1877; lecturing on health and nursing for the Yorkshire Ladies’ Council; addressing the Social Science Congress in Edinburgh in 1880; and speaking in campaigns for women’s suffrage, another cause close to her heart. In 1882 she was elected President of the Medical Women’s Federation of England. Then, in 1883, she accepted a fresh challenge: to head up a new hospital and dispensary in India, where women’s health was being damaged by seclusion and child marriage, yet they were barred from treatment by male doctors. Women doctors were desperately needed. She gave up her work in Leeds to a fellow woman doctor, Alice Ker, and after an arduous journey, arrived in Bombay to begin what became her life

work. She established hospitals, set up medical training for women, campaigned against child marriage. When she was 44 she met Herbert Phipson, a businessman who shared her concerns and interests, and they married. With his support she continued her work, though her health was suffering. She and her husband finally returned to England in 1905, but she did not rest. She had kept her Yorkshire friends, and represented Leeds and Huddersfield in the ongoing campaigns for women’s suffrage. In 1907 she marched bravely at the head of the famous ‘Mud March’, but she was already seriously ill. A year later she died of breast cancer and diabetes, aged 67. She was described as the ablest of those brave pioneering women who broke through the barriers – Leeds can be proud of the support it offered her.

‘Wicked’ Flies Back to Leeds Grand Having thrilled over 42,000 people in 2014, the wonderful show ‘Wicked’ is flying back to Leeds Grand Theatre from Wednesday 13th June to Saturday 7th July. Based on the Gregory Maguire novel that re-imagines the stories and characters originally created by L. Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, ‘WICKED’ tells the story of the deep friendship between two sorcery students and their extraordinary adventures in Oz, which ultimately lead them to fulfilling their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. It stars Amy Ross as Elphaba (who recently starred in the musical ‘Kinky Boots’ in the West End), Helen Woolf as Glinda (who has played this role many times), Aaron Sidwell as Fiyero (Steven Beale in EastEnders), Steven Pinder as The Wizard and Doctor Dillamond, Kim Ismay as Madame Morrible, Emily Shaw as Nessarose and Iddon Jones as Boq. Company Manager, Anthony Field, has been with the show for eight years and is still hugely enthusiastic about it. “Being on the road with such a huge production demands careful planning and a huge amount of thought goes in to safely transporting and assembling

Wicked takes the audience on an adventure through Oz with breathtaking special effects

the sets, costumes, props, and all of the technical equipment”, he told us. “As well as all the elements of the physical production, around 80 staff tour with the show fulltime from various departments such as stage management, wardrobe, sound and lighting. Around 30 local crew members join the production at each venue to assist in various departments. All together we’re a huge company! “During our travels on the road, both internationally and at home in the UK, it has become very clear that Wicked has a kind of magic and appeal I’ve not seen with any other production. The show brings a true blockbuster to cities around the UK, that maintains all the elements of the Broadway and West End spectacle.

“’Wicked takes the audience on an adventure through Oz with breathtaking special effects, characters, costumes, scenery and storytelling. When you factor in the beautiful score and music by Stephen Schwartz played live every show with our 14-piece orchestra, you can see why audiences return over and over again. We all feel very humbled and lucky to be a part of it all.” ‘Wicked’ is already the fifteenth longest running show in West End theatre history, has been seen by over 53 million people in 15 countries, and won over 100 major awards.

The Path to Heaven - World Première of New Holocaust Opera A powerful tale of extremism, expedience, deceit and betrayal, ‘The Path to Heaven’ dramatically exposes the disintegration of the loves, lives and hopes of an extended family struggling to survive amidst the horrors of The Holocaust. From the heady excesses of 1930’s Berlin, through deportation and deprivation to ultimate liberation and beyond, this meticulously-researched series of individual real stories has been woven into a true work of art for a new generation searching for answers. The writers were driven to create this Opera by the ever-increasing activities of hate groups and other demi-racist organisations in the UK and farther afield. They felt that the physical and verbal attacks on Muslims, Jews, refugees, immigrants and other minority communities today have chilling parallels

with Germany in the 1930s, and that those parallels must both be exposed and explored. The Path to Heaven will be premièred at the Howard Assembly Room on Tuesday 19th June in collaboration with the RNCM. Composer: Professor Adam Gorb, the Royal Northern College of Music; Director: Stefan Janski; Cast: Royal Northern College of Music; Instrumentals Psappha and Royal Northern College of Music; Conductor: Mark Heron. The Hepworth Wakefield opens two exciting new photography exhibitions this month that have surrealism at their core. ‘Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain’ and ‘Viviane Sassen: Hot Mirror’ present two extraordinary photographers from different eras and run from 22nd June – 7th October. ‘Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain’ explores photographer Lee Miller’s involvement with surrealist circles in Britain in the late 1930s. She was one of the most original photographic artists of the 20th century, whose work spanned the fields of fashion, photojournalism and art. Arriving in Paris in 1929, Miller quickly became Man Ray’s apprentice, muse and collaborator, becoming part of the Surrealist network. During WW

reserved.

II she was a freelance war correspondent employed by British Vogue, capturing thoughtprovoking images of Hitler’s secret apartments and the harrowing atrocities of wartime living. This exhibition presents the creative collaborations with the artists Miller knew, photographed, and exhibited with during a time when Britain was recognised as a ‘Surrealist centre’. Sculptures, paintings, photographs, collages and works on paper by artists Eileen Agar, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte and Henry Moore will also feature.

‘Viviane Sassen: Hot Mirror’ presents a survey of work by the Dutch artist and photographer Viviane Sassen, one of the most innovative photographers working today, and cites Surrealism as one of her earliest influences, seen in the uncanny shadows, fragmented bodies and dreamlike landscapes in her work. Sassen has selected images from her art photography series of the last ten years, as well as new photographs and collages. These create ‘image-poems’ that draw on the Surrealist strategies of collage. Hot Mirror will also present a new version of Sassen’s immersive film, Totem, 2014, which places the visitor inside a surreal landscape.

Arts&Culture Gallery Celebrates Tenth Anniversary with New Exhibition A new exhibition at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery celebrates the tenth anniversary of the refurbishment that created a space for the University of Leeds to engage people in the city and beyond with its art collection. The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery was launched in the enlarged and enhanced space in the University’s Parkinson Building on 6th March 2008, and the exhibition ‘Transformation’ celebrates the extensive contributions made by Stanley and Audrey Burton, Hilary Diaper and the general public to the development and success of the gallery space. “It was a considerable change from the old University Gallery”, said Layla Bloom, the University’s art curator. “Ten years on from the Gallery’s transformation, this is an opportune time to consider what the Burton family has made possible. The expanded and revitalised spaces have provided greater scope to share the collection and they also allow deeper interaction with it.”

‘Transformation’ will feature key artworks from the collection, including artists like Stanley Spencer, Jacob Epstein, Terry Frost, Atkinson Grimshaw and many others. The exhibition is not only a thank you to all the Gallery’s visitors but also a collaborative effort with them. Labels for selected artworks will be written by the Gallery’s audience and gathered via social media.

This ten-year milestone is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the varied and important art collection at the University “This ten-year milestone is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the varied and important art collection at the University”, said Dr Stella Butler, University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection. “The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery is a key cultural asset to the University and city of Leeds, which provides an accessible home for the wonderful collection.”

Laurence Pusey at The Atrium Gallery The latest exhibition at the lovely Atrium Gallery in the Bexley Wing at St James' University Hospital features paintings by Leeds artist Laurence Pusey. Showing until 29th July, these recent paintings, mainly in oils, are based on morning walks along farm tracks in Greece and Cyprus, inspired by the blue skies, and rich golden grass, contrasting with the twisted limbs and colour of the olive trees. Laurence is well known in Yorkshire for his use of rich pigment in a post-impressionist style. Each work has one overriding colour which dominates, supported by contrasting colours. An obvious example is ‘Sunset over the Nile’ (yes, we realise this isn’t in Greece or Cyprus!) with its deep scarlet and orange contrasting with the violet and ultramarine

of the silhouettes of the flooded trees. He uses colour to affect the emotions of the viewer - a technique explored by the Fauvist School of artists led by Matisse. As he says: “An artist is never off duty. Everywhere I go I'm looking at colour patterns, shapes, the effect of light especially when it bursts through young leaves.” www.laurencepusey.co.uk

Playhouse Searches for Heart of Leeds Ahead of Redevelopment

In the final production in the Quarry Theatre ahead of redevelopment, West Yorkshire Playhouse presents ‘Searching for the Heart of Leeds’, a community celebration, from Tuesday 19th – Saturday 23rd June. More than 70 people are taking part, performing roles both on and offstage, alongside six community choirs and a band of eight musicians recruited from across the city. Written by BAFTA-winning writer Mark Catley, it is inspired by Leeds stories and follows the journey of a lost Loiner as they search the landmarks and histories of the city to discover what makes Leeds Leeds.

“’Searching for the Heart of Leeds’ is a collection of stories, some nostalgic, some contemporary, which, when knitted together, give a real and emotional reflection of what it means to live in Leeds”, said Mark. “Listening to my fellow Loiners has been a pleasure, and I hope that audiences enjoy their stories as much as I have.” One of the participants, John Poulter, is hoping to survive the dance workshops so he can be part of it! “It’s the best kind of adventure”, he said “Every session takes you out beyond yourself. And you’re doing it all with great people, a great script and a fantastic team of professionals. It’s a brilliant project and I think the end result will be joyous!”

‘Searching for the Heart of Leeds’, with musical direction and composition by Caution Collective’s Christella Litras, and movement direction by Phoenix Dance Theatre, is a true celebration of people, theatre and our city. “The Playhouse has always been a theatre for the people”, said Director of Creative Engagement, Alexander Ferris. “This project is the next stage in the development of that idea. We’ve got a brilliant cast and company that represents Leeds in all its diversity and it makes sense that The Quarry will be full of those voices immediately prior to our redevelopment. Every performance will feel like a big Leedsthemed party!”

Nick Cassenbaum will take you on a hilarious journey to the last authentic Jewish bathhouse (schvitz) in Canning Town in ‘Bubble Schmeisis’ at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, on Sunday 3rd June, 7pm. Following his success at the Edinburgh Festival and recent US tour, Nick takes to the stage armed with not much more than a bathrobe, some imaginative uses for a pineapple and two Klezmer musicians, and invites you into this world with a witty, affectionate look at what it is to be both British and Jewish. We hear of the joys of South Mimms service station, the disappointment of attending a Tottenham Hotspur game, and how easy it

‘Sorrel & Black Cake’ – Inspired by Stories of Windrush Generation It's a celebration and acknowledgment of the thousands of Caribbean people who

A group of young performers has been inspired by stories of Caribbean heritage to create a show to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the arrival of The Windrush. The Geraldine Connor Foundation production ‘Sorrel & Black Cake’ captures the pioneering spirit of West Indian migrants to Britain through music, movement, and oral history. It is based on the memories of individuals who made the crossing from the Caribbean to Leeds in the 1940s and 50s.

Poet and theatre-maker Khadijah Ibrahiim and composer/ musician, Christella Litras, have worked with the group through a series of creative workshops, supported by leading artists, including dancers/ choreographers Donald Edwards and David Hamilton, musician and storyteller Ansell Broderick, and singer/songwriter Paulette Morris.

contributed to British society “The group has also experimented with drumming and chanting to better understand the roots of these genres in Africa and the Caribbean”, she said, “and how they have influenced popular music culture today.”

“’Sorrel & Black Cake’ is a creative approach to telling the rich stories of the Windrush Generation”, said Khadijah Ibrahiim. “It's a celebration and acknowledgment of the thousands of Caribbean people who contributed to British society. It explores love and loss, culture and faith, but, most of all, the importance of the interwoven oral history of Black British people.”

‘Sorrel & Black Cake’ will be performed at the Mandela Centre, Chapeltown Road, on Friday 22nd June at 7pm, and in Room 700 Leeds Central Library on Saturday 23rd June at 7pm. Tickets (£6) are available from www.gcfoundation. co.uk/project/sorrel-black-cake/.

Christella Litras has been working with the group to explore the amalgamation of musical genres in Black Britain from the late 1940s (calypso, mento, Kumina, reggae and gospel), weaving them into the narrative of Sorrel & Black Cake.

This project has made possible through the Heritage Lottery Young Roots Programme, the Emerald Foundation and Leeds City Council, and is supported by Creative Learning Partnerships, Leeds Young Authors, Molineaux Productions, Peepal Tree Press and RJC Dance.

A special presentation and discussion with the cast will take place at the Windrush Symposium, Leeds Becket University on 9th June.

On Behalf of The People The powerful story of a post-war mining family coming to terms with their rapidly changing world comes to The Carriageworks on 22nd June. Written by Ray Castleton, co-founder of The Melting Shop theatre company, ‘On Behalf of The People’ reveals the struggle that affected millions from mining communities in the face of enormous political and social change. It is a family drama filled with warmth, humour and realism. Set in a Yorkshire mining town, it follows George Mason, his wife Connie, their son - returning solider Tom - and his fiancée, from the immediate aftermath of the war to 1953. “On Behalf of the People is about how the aftermath of the war impacted people who lived in mining communities”, said Ray. “I was keen to write a story about real people and how their lives and relationships changed; the reaction we received last year confirms that this is a story that touches people with its authenticity and honesty.”

It premièred to great acclaim at the National Coal Mining Museum and a short and highly successful run of community venues across Yorkshire and Derbyshire followed. The production now embarks on its first major tour, spanning regional theatres, community venues and ex-mining villages across Yorkshire and Derbyshire, and playing at the Buxton and Greater Manchester Fringe Festivals.

New Exhibition Explores Dyeing Techniques A new exhibition at ULITA – an Archive of International Textiles at the University of Leeds – celebrates the fabric dyeing techniques used around the world since ancient times. ‘Resists: exploring resist-dyed textiles across cultures’ features textiles techniques including batik, ikat, resist block printing, stencils, tie-dye and stitched resists. Focusing on historic textiles from West Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Japan and Indonesia, the show draws upon items in the ULITA collection, including two major new collections: the Coleman Indonesian Collection and the West African O’Hear Collection. “It’s been exciting to discover the wealth of items we have to illustrate these applications”, said Jill Winder, ULITA’s Curator. “We hope they will inspire visitors and students to create their own resists. The exhibition also gives us the

opportunity to celebrate the completion of work on our recently donated O’Hear West African Collection, and showcase other significant donations not previously seen by the public.”

The Coleman Collection of Indonesian Textiles is a substantial collection of batiks, ikats and weaves from Hywel Coleman (Honorary Senior Research Fellow, School of Education). Its greatest strengths are textiles from South Sulawesi, Bali, and West and East Nusa Tenggara. The O’Hear Collection contains both hand drawn and stenciled batiks and complex weaves, including Adire block printing, stencil prints and tie-dye. This collection is being displayed for the first time. The exhibition runs (Tuesday-Friday) until 13th December 2018 at ULITA. Free admission. Please see ulita.leeds.ac.uk for detailed opening hours or call 0113 343 3919.

Arts&Culture AEONS: A Sound Walk Along the River Tyne

Photo: Genevieve Stevenson

This Summer, ‘Aeons’, a new sound walk commissioned by Opera North, will take audiences on a musical journey along the banks of the Tyne and back through the ages in the centre of Newcastle as part of the Great Exhibition of the North 2018. This is an epic piece of music designed to be heard through headphones during a half-hour walk along Hadrian’s Wall Path and is the work of Martin Green of the folk trio Lau. It features the vocals of Becky Unthank (The Unthanks), Mogwai’s Dominic Aitchison, the chorus and orchestra of Opera North, and field recordings made along the river.

“We often think of music as the soundtrack to our lives”, said Martin Green. “This half hour has been designed to reflect our changing surroundings as we follow the River Tyne past the vestiges of centuries of human history, and back into deep geological time. “As a composer, I’ve never had this degree of control over how people actually listen to the music. This music has been made for the specific headphones everyone will be wearing. It gave me a freedom I’ve never had before – to make tiny sounds and place them right next to the listener or come up in the middle of a 32-strong chorus and hear those singers from every direction. The field recordings, painstakingly made in true binaural sound on Hadrian’s Wall Path, add another extraordinary sonic dimension. “Working with the orchestra and chorus of Opera North has been a joyous experience. And who better to celebrate the North East than Becky Unthank, who has graced Aeons with her matchless vocals and incredible knowledge of traditional song.” Aeons will open as part of the spectacular Get North! opening event on Friday 22nd June at the Great Exhibition of the North’s Quayside Hub. Walks will run at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm each day from Monday to Saturday until Friday 7th September (ex Mon 23 July & Mon 20 Aug). Tickets are free but booking via getnorth2018.com is essential.

Walkers will collect their headsets at Gateshead Millennium Bridge and step into a unique sonic adventure, immersed in a musical world that evolves as they move through the landscape, passing under six historic bridges and out to the western fringes of the city. It promises an intense, personal experience of the river as a place of imagination, wonder and constant change.

Great Exhibition of the North is a free, 80-day Exhibition running from 22nd June – 9th September across NewcastleGateshead, celebrating great art and culture, design and innovation across the North. For full programme details, visit www.getnorth2018.com

Cruel Britannia: Songs and Scenes from British History You may know the song that goes: “The British, the British, the British are best. I wouldn’t give tuppence for all of the rest.” Certainly there were famous kings and queens, generals, admirals, writers, explorers, inventors. There was enterprise. Bravery. Defiance in the face of overwhelming odds. Nelson, Wellington, Churchill. But why was there a Peasants’ Revolt in 1381? Why was Charles 1st beheaded? What did women have to complain about in 1900? And what about slavery?

New Young Company at WYP West Yorkshire Playhouse has announced its first Young Company; a collective of 12 creatively curious artists aged 18 – 25 from across Leeds, including actors, writers and theatre producers, DJs and live artists who will collaborate with the Playhouse over the coming months. Mentored by WYP’s Director of Creative Engagement Alexander Ferris and Associate Director Amy Leach, the group will spend a year producing an eclectic range of work. The Playhouse will support the group to collaborate in making bold and socially resonant work, as well as providing opportunities to learn from professional theatre artists and use Playhouse resources to learn and develop their own skills. “We put out a call for applications through our youth theatre projects and our partner organisations – like RJC Dance, Leeds College of Music etc – and received about 60 applications”, said Amy. “Our role has a very strong supportive, pastoral element. The idea is to help these young people on their individual creative journeys and help them develop pathways. “West Yorkshire Playhouse will provide a connection, a creative home where they can feel like an artist and receive support and advice on how to take their projects forward every step of the way or collaborate with other members of the Company.”

Through Furnace, The Playhouse is committed to the development of locally based artists at all stages of their career and to supporting them in creating and producing theatre – the Young Company is an exciting development and underlines this commitment. “We are thrilled to have recruited this brilliant group of early career artists to our very first Young Company,” said Alexander. “The diversity of their skills, experience, art forms and opinions are going to provide a rich and fascinating process. It’s the logical next step for many of the young people coming through our Playhouse Youth projects and our Furnace programme. We are looking forward to embedding the Young Company into the life of the Playhouse and to seeing what their creative collaborations bring.”

Our programme is completely FREE and will help increase your knowledge and self-management skills.

But don’t just take our word for it! Michael, 57, attended the course in Woodhouse and said The LEEDS Programme transformed his understanding of diabetes. He said: “The course was absolutely brilliant. “After 15 years of being diabetic, I learnt more in three sessions than in the previous 15 years. “I have found advice about healthy eating invaluable as well as how insulin works and how to manage my medication. “By putting it all together and using the strategies they have told me about, I have definitely noticed the difference.” Empowe rin g

CommunityNews Chapel Allerton Big Lunch Celebrates Tenth Year!

In July 2009, a few Chapel Allerton residents got together and held a Big Lunch street party, inspired by the nationwide initiative driven by the Eden Project. That event led to the birth of the community group ‘cara’ which is looking forward to spending the day with more Chapel Allerton residents and guests than ever before for Big Lunch 2018 on Sunday 3rd June, 12 – 5pm on Regent Street. The Big Lunch is the group’s tent pole event, and a day marked on the community’s calendar along with the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival, Gledhow Valley Woods Funday, and cara’s own Easter Funday. Everyone is welcome to attend – just bring along a smile and some food to share with others! Marquees, tables, and chairs are all provided, as is live music and games for children and adults. Be sure to arrive early to get the best food and a seat – there’ll even be a prize for best homemade dish! The Big Lunch is also when the winners of the annual Chapel Allerton Awards are announced. After nominations from the public, people were able to vote from a shortlist for their chosen winners – these

really are community awards. Who will be this year’s Unsung Hero? Or this year’s King and Queen? Where is the best place to eat or drink? Be at the Big Lunch and you’ll find out! As well as the Awards and the Big Lunch, cara organise a range of fun classes, monthly supper clubs in local eateries, a book club, and other social events. Membership is just £10 for 12 months and members can use their cara card in about 100 different shops, bars, restaurants and online businesses in the local area to enjoy excellent discounts, while supporting local businesses. A minimum 10% of membership fees is donated to charity – for example £1,500 to Yorkshire Air Ambulance, and £999 to buy a public access defibrillator for the community, which is installed on Harrogate Road. The Committee is made up of unpaid volunteers. For further information, visit www. lovechapelallerton.com, or follow them on Twitter @caraChapelA Matt Tamplin

Winston Solicitors Regain Apprentice Crown Roundhay law firm, Winston Solicitors, has won the Leeds Mencap Apprentice Challenge for a second time – beating off stiff competition this year from The Knowledge Partnership and turning a £50 loan into £1,642 profit to help people with learning disabilities locally. Winston’s now famous quiz evening, a cake bake, raffles and a dress down day all helped the firm to seal its success and reclaim the apprentice crown, first won in 2016. Leeds Mencap provides help and support for adults and children with learning disabilities and their families throughout the city and was delighted with the backing it received for its fifth annual Apprentice Challenge. “Our Apprentice Challenge is proving to be a popular way for local businesses to support the vital work that we do across Leeds”, said Loretta Jones, Head of Fundraising. “It gives them the opportunity to be really creative and raise funds in a way that best suits the company

– it is great for team building and employee engagement, as well as helping us to provide our vital support services.” The apprentice champions received their award during a presentation ceremony at The Vinery Centre, Leeds Mencap’s home. The Knowledge Partnership, which raised an impressive £919.79 for the charity, also received a prize.

CommunityNews Cllr Dan Cohen Alwoodley

I would like to offer a huge thank you to all the Alwoodley residents who reelected Neil, Peter and I to continue serving as your local councillors – we will do our utmost to continue to live up to the faith you have shown in us. Hopefully, Alwoodley residents are still in the mood for voting. On Thursday 28th June, those living within the boundary of Alwoodley Parish, have the opportunity to vote, in a local referendum for the Alwoodley Parish Neighbourhood Plan. You can view the plan at www. alwoodleyparishcouncil.org/alwoodleyneighbourhood-plan/

This plan has been developed by Alwoodley Parish Council to help shape future building development and hopefully protect the parish from inappropriate developments. To get to the stage of a public vote, it has been subjected to consultations, review by Leeds City Council planning officers and a further review by an independent planning inspector. The referendum gives every Alwoodley Parish resident the chance to make clear their thoughts on this Neighbourhood Plan and the importance they place upon it. Once again, the Parish Council is holding its Concerts on the Village Green season. This begins with the Brass Band Concert on Sunday 17th June (Fathers’ Day), followed by the Jazz on the Village Green in August. Every year the crowds for these free concerts gets bigger and

the atmosphere gets better, so do come along, bring your deckchairs and a picnic and we’ll all get together for the Floral Dance! Finally, the 9th/10th June sees the return of the Leeds Triathalon. On Saturday, the main impact will be felt around Roundhay Park, where there will be a whole host of activities. On Sunday there will be a number of road closures around the route of the main race. For details, visit www.leeds.triathlon.org/event_ info/local_information/. As I learnt last year, pre-planning is everything! Do please remember, for any and all local issues, Peter, Neil and myself are always here to help. Shadow Member for Children and families 07711 647 849 Daniel.Cohen@leeds.gov.uk

CommunityNews Wayzgoose Celebrates Twenty Five Years!

Stick-swinging dance troupe Wharfedale Wayzgoose is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with a Day of Dance on Saturday 9th June in their home town of Otley, coinciding with celebrations for Thomas Chippendale’s 300th birthday. The rowdy Morris side, known for its bombastic Border style, has invited other groups from across the county for the occasion and is looking forward to welcoming ten other Morris sides, demonstrating differing styles, including the Buttercross Belles, Briggate Morris, 400 Roses, Hornbeam, Hexadaisy and the Bradshaw Mummers. Melodeons, bells and drums will be heard across

Otley as the dancers recognise Way z g o o s e’s significant anniversary. “The popularity of Wayzgoose increases with each passing year and we’re thrilled we’ve made it to our quarter century”, said founding member, Anita Walker. “We started in 1993 as a small group of friends performing locally. Over the years we have acquired more dancers and performed with groups from America, Australia, Romania and France. We have developed our own style based on speed, flare and a reckless disregard for our

own personal safety – this is what you can enjoy at our Day of Dance!” Dancing will commence at 11am on Saturday 9th June. There will be four sessions at various locations in Otley throughout the day, with two dances taking place at any one time. For further information about Wharfedale Wayzgoose, visit www. wharfedale-wayzgoose.co.uk. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. If you fancy joining the troupe, you’ll find them at Otley’s Methodist Church, Tuesdays 8.30 – 10pm, where they practise.

Home Garden Terns are superficially similar to small Gulls, but there are important differences. In the UK, Terns are Summer visitors, arriving to breed off our coasts in Spring and leaving in Autumn. They generally have long, pointed wings and long, deeply forked tails, and are fast and agile fliers. The most widespread Tern in the UK is the Common Tern, with mostly grey and white plumage, red legs, a black head and a red beak. The bill of an adult has a black tip to it, which is one way of distinguishing it from the very similar Arctic Tern. Common Terns can breed singly or in large colonies, both on the coast and on inland waters. They have a direct, powerful flight and when fishing, fly with their bills pointed downwards. One of the joys of Summer is to watch a Common Tern hunting along a river or canal, hovering above the water, before plunging down to catch a fish.

Common Tern Photo: Ben Andrew rspb-images. com

They are also noisy and vocal birds, especially in colonies. During the 20th century, there was a decline in the number of breeding Common Terns in the UK, but measures, such as the creation of Tern rafts and breeding islands, have greatly helped them. A good place to see Common Terns locally is Rodley Nature Reserve. Leeds RSPB Group

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster

Long Summer evenings and warm sunny days make June a perfect month to really enjoy your garden.

Tender Plants

Tie and Trim

Frosts should have come to an end in late May, so at last it is safe to plant out bedding plants and any half hardy veg and flowers you have raised from seed – that includes edibles like courgettes, outdoor varieties of tomatoes and runner beans. Why not choose some pretty bedding plants to put in a planter by your door?

It feels as though we have spent the whole of April and May willing our little plants to grow, but in the warmer temperatures they can suddenly increase in size so quickly that gardening seems to involve mainly staking, tying and trimming.

Lawns should be

cut a little and often now that they are starting to look lush and green.

Lawns should be cut a little and often now that they are starting to look lush and green, but its best to leave them a little longer between cuts during hot dry spells. The first hedge trimming of the year can also take place with things like Box and Yew needing a tidy up after the first flush of growth. Make sure you have no birds nesting there before you start. Early flowering shrubs can also be given a trim if needed once the floral display is over. Tall perennials will need staking, and it’s best to put in the supports early so that plants grow through them to give a more natural look.

Garden Visits With the garden visiting season now in full swing you will find ample opportunity to get out and see what other gardeners are doing with their plots. There are RHS flower shows this month and next at Chatsworth, Hampton Court and Tatton Park, but if you would like something a little closer to home why not come along to the ever popular Roundhay Open Gardens (hosted by REAP) on the afternoon of Sunday 24th June; and Headingley Open Gardens on Sunday 17th June, 2-5pm, programmes available from HEART Bennett Rd & Oxfam Bookshop on Otley Rd.

A Forever Flower to Celebrate St Gemma’s

Planting a Million Trees!

40th Anniversary Year The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), Hollybush, based in Kirkstall have planted hundreds of trees in primary schools across Leeds. The Trees for Learning Project is part of a nationwide scheme for primary schools to plant a million trees by 2020. Many schools across Leeds and Kirklees have signed up to the scheme that provides free trees for schools as part of the project, funded by DEFRA and the White Rose Forest. To recognise St Gemma’s 40th Anniversary, the Hospice has commissioned a handcrafted iron flower from the British Ironwork Centre. This beautiful Forever Flower can be yours for a suggested minimum donation of £25. Each Flower is a colourful keepsake that comes complete with a specially designed celebration card which can be dedicated to the memory of your loved ones.

Several schools have planted their own orchards. Others have created a new hedge, screening their school playground from the road. All trees that were planted were native species including: Oak, Rowan, Grey Alder and Hawthorn.

Your Forever Flower will be part of a spectacular display throughout the Summer at the hospice and can be viewed at St Gemma’s Open Garden event on Saturday 16th June, when you can take a leisurely stroll around the awardwinning gardens and enjoy the beautiful surroundings with some lovely musical entertainment.

Tree planting is educational, engaging, rewarding and fun, offering numerous benefits to wildlife and the environment and creating an opportunity to connect to nature.

Your Forever Flower will be yours to take home at the end of August. With your help St Gemma’s can continue to make a real difference to every patient. For further details on how to order your Forever Flower, or information on the Open Garden event, please visit events.st-gemma. co.uk or call 0113 218 5555.

Sound&Vision Film Review By Brendan Campbell

REVENGE DIRECTED BY: CORALIE FARGEAT STARRING: MATILDA LUTZ, KEVIN JANSSENS, VINCENT COLOMBE, GUILLAUME BOUCHEDE CERT: 18 RUNNING TIME: 108 MINS Is this, as some have suggested, the rape revenge thriller for the #metoo era? I would say probably not, but it’s an outrageously lurid, blood soaked, ultraviolent shocker that, if nothing else, is certainly effective on a visceral level.

At a remote, secluded holiday home in the middle of the desert, Richard (Kevin Janssens) and his mistress Jen (Matilda Lutz) arrive for an illicit tryst ahead of Richard’s annual hunting trip with his buddies Stan and Dimitri, who unexpectedly arrive a day early. The four of them spend an evening drinking and partying. The next morning, while Richard is out of the house, Stan makes advances on Jen claiming that she was coming on to him the night before. When Jen rebuffs him Stan sexually assaults her, briefly interrupted by Dimitri who turns a blind eye. When Richard returns and learns of what happened, he offers Jen a sum of money to keep the incident quiet but Jen refuses and threatens to come clean to Richard’s wife about their affair. Enraged, Richard strikes Jen and she makes a run for it with the three men giving chase. They catch up to her soon enough whereupon Richard pushes her off a cliff and she ends up impaled on a tree below. Remarkably, Jen survives this and, after extricating herself from this sticky predicament (with a substantial piece of tree still poking out of her), she spends a night in a cave. Following some resourceful and inventive field surgery (aided by the powerful hallucinogen peyote) she emerges, phoenix-like as a seemingly unstoppable vengeful agent of retribution and sets about tracking down and dispatching her tormentors. In essence, it’s a pretty stripped-down, straight forward exercise without a great deal of dialogue and a not particularly original cat-and-mouse/huntersbecome-the-hunted premise. Writer/ director Coralie Fargeat is clearly a talented filmmaker; deftly cranking up tension, dynamically handling the action sequences and imbuing the proceedings with a hint of the surreal and a striking visual style. However, given that the film arrives amid an urgent and explosive reckoning surrounding sexual violence, harassment and abuse, aside from the gratifying and cathartic spectacle of terrible men being brutally served their just desserts and a strong (apparently

The film frequently strains plausibility to the point where it risks tipping over into flat-out absurdity as it gets increasingly, deliriously over the top. Fargeat seems to have plenty of fun ramping up the film’s weirdness and gruesome ridiculousness but whether that translates to enjoyment for the audience is an open question. The squeamish would be wise to give Revenge a wide berth but I imagine there’s a particular kind of entertainment to be found for those with a suitably study constitution and a fondness for the outre splatterfest. invincible) badass heroine at its centre, any purported feminist angle seems to ring somewhat hollow, despite having a female director at the helm. Unashamedly trashy, Revenge recalls the “Grindhouse” thrills of 70’s and 80’s exploitation B-movies with a frankly ludicrous amount of bloodletting and gore. If the sight of people poking about in open wounds is the kind of thing that gives you the heebie jeebies, probably best to give this one a miss.

Walter Trout Plays The Brudenell Walter Trout, one of the best, most respected blues guitarists on the scene, plays Brudenell Social Club on Monday 4th June. Trout is the beating heart of the modern blues rock scene, respected by the old guard and revered by the young guns. After five decades in the game, he’s a talismanic figure and the glue that bonds the blues community together. He’s also the only artist with the vision, talent and star-studded address book to pull off a project on the scale of the album ‘We’re All in This Together’. Drafting 14 A-list stars – including Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayall and Randy Bachman – and writing an original song for each, Trout made the most tantalising album of 2017,

and found solace after a run of solo albums that chronicled his near-fatal liver disease of 2014. “Now was the right time for this record”, he said. “’Battle Scars’ was such an intense piece of work. I needed a break from that, to do something fun and lighthearted. This album was joyous for me.” ‘We’re All in This Together’ is the sound of an artist not just getting by with a little help from his friends, but positively thriving, and is sure to light a rocket under his lateblooming career. “I feel like I’m in the best years of my life right now”, said Trout. “I have a whole different appreciation of being alive, of the world, of my family, of my career. I want life to be exciting and celebratory. I want to dig in. I want to grab life by the balls and not let go!”

Child Bereavement UK supports families when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child faces bereavement. The charity also trains professionals such as doctors, teachers and midwives to help them better understand and meet the needs of grieving families. “Last year we raised over £60,000 at Let’s Rock festivals across the UK and we couldn’t have done this without the support of our volunteers”, said Ruth Sanger, Regional Fundraising & Communications Manager. “The atmosphere on the day is brilliant and our volunteers really do enjoy themselves. If you’re tempted, please give us a call and find out how you can get involved.” Email femke.bekker@ childbereave mentuk.org or call 01494 568932. The Staging of New Briggate Blues Chris Nickson is a prolific writer. He has turned out over 25 books and many of them are based in and around Leeds and set during different time periods. ‘Dark Briggate Blues’ and its sequel ‘The New Eastgate Swing’ are set in Leeds during the 1950s, seen through the eyes of enquiry agent Dan Markham. Studio 20 (where Sela Bar is today on Briggate) was in full swing with jazz seven nights a week. It was the only dedicated jazz club in Leeds and attracted the likes of bluesman Jimmy Rushing, traditional jazz legend Ken Colyer, vocalist and raconteur George Melly, and sax legends Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott. As with many of Chris’s books, he weaves in snippets of family history. Dark Briggate Blues gave him the opportunity to draw on his father’s experience as a jazz pianist in bands in Leeds in 1930s.

It's about the changes in the world since the 1950s, his love of jazz and Studio 20, and the unearthing of a secret that could tear them apart One night, Chris bumped into Steve Crocker from Jazz Leeds who had just read Dark Briggate Blues and he threw out the idea: “You should write a play for the Leeds Jazz Festival”. And that’s how ‘New Briggate Blues’ was born. The play is set in 1989, just after the fall of the Berlin Wall. There are just two characters: Dan Markham and his wife Carla, who have been married for 30

years. It's about the changes in the world since the 1950s, his love of jazz and Studio 20, and the unearthing of a secret that could tear them apart. A live jazz quintet, featuring singer Jenny Smith, will provide a soundtrack to his thoughts and memories of Studio 20 – mostly 50’s jazz classics, including Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Tubby Hayes. New Briggate Blues is directed by Leeds writer and broadcaster Ray Brown, who has directed numerous plays. “The structure and characters were there but it has been a very interesting experience making them into stage characters”, he said. “I am playing the role of dramaturg and enjoying it immensely, taking Chris’s story and redrafting it for the Carriageworks stage. Now I’m really looking forward to starting rehearsals.” New Briggate Blues is at The Carriageworks Theatre on Monday 23rd July.

Health&Fitness The NHS Chalks Up Another Anniversary On 5th July, the NHS celebrates its 70th anniversary! There is no denying that it has problems and is desperately underfunded, but it is still one of the best health services in the world and we must fight to preserve it. That’s what Leeds Hospital Alert does – quietly campaigning to save this great institution. The NHS was first proposed in 1946 by Aneurin Bevan, Minister for Health and chief architect of the NHS. His plan was to bring together voluntary and municipal hospitals which would be managed by local hospital boards. Teaching hospitals were to have autonomy and be run by a board of governors accountable to the Minister of Health.

Among those who opposed the new health service were the large voluntary hospitals in London, which were concerned that they might lose their independence. But the NHS was here to stay. GPs remained self-employed and there was no charge to see them – a huge relief to the majority of people. Obviously there have been many changes over the years – some for better, some for worse. One was the outsourcing to private companies of ancillary services in the 1980s, some of which have had their contracts terminated because the services provided were not up to scratch.

This was one of the most significant social reforms of the twentieth century and led to Britain being the envy of the world

Another was regrading nurses to reflect the job they did. Although this sounded good in theory, it resulted in some confusion as health boards interpreted the national guidelines differently which led to some hospitals losing staff to others that paid nurses on a higher scale. And, PFI has left some hospitals with huge debts that will take years to pay off. There have been some good decisions too. In 1959 mental health was included in the NHS and in 1965 money was allotted to subsidise the cost of GP surgeries and help with staff pay and conditions. Bevan opened the Park Hospital Manchester on 5th July 1948 and for the first-time hospital doctors, nurses, dentists, opticians and pharmacists all came together in one organisation to provide services that were paid for by general taxation and free for all at the point of need. This was one of the most significant social reforms of the twentieth century and led to Britain being the envy of the world.

Today we have to pay for some services – dentistry, podiatry, ophthalmology and prescriptions – but by and large the concept of the NHS remains intact. We may complain about waiting times, but we know that we will be seen and will not have to show our credit cards before treatment – or actually be refused treatment for lack of funds!

Trust Backs Leeds Research into Devastating Disease Thanks to the support of The Kennedy Trust for Rheumatology Research and the University of Leeds, researchers in Leeds are hoping for a breakthrough in the treatment of the devastating immune system disease Scleroderma – an inflammatory disease that leads to the scarring and thickening of the skin and internal organs. Though rare, it can have a devastating effect on patients’ lives. Some suffer highly debilitating symptoms – their hands and fingers become permanently stiff and clenched, their muscles and internal organs are damaged, they can suffer shortness of breath, kidney failure and pulmonary hypertension. Once patients get to this stage the condition is not reversible and long-term prognosis is very poor. The new research has two main aims – to find tell-tale markers that will allow doctors to identify patients most at risk of developing the disease, and to find the processes at work in those patients that have the potential to be blocked by drugs. “We are really grateful for this support,” said Dr Francesco Del Galdo, who sees patients from across the region in his clinic at Chapel Allerton Hospital. “Right

now we don’t know what triggers the scarring process. If we can get a clearer understanding of this, we can then search for the molecules that might actually prevent it. And, if we can develop a test to identify patients at risk, we can concentrate on giving early treatments to those most urgently in need.” During the three-year trial, Dr Del Galdo will work with colleagues from London and Manchester to establish a cohort of 400 patients identified as being at risk of developing scleroderma. Studying these patients will help the researchers to determine which methods of diagnosis provide the most accurate picture of the patient’s future. At the same time, they will seek out the possible future targets for drugs. The clinical, biological and lifestyle data gathered from these patients – alongside information about which of them went on to develop scleroderma – will also become a rich resource for future studies into the disease, both in the UK and overseas.

Pictured: Dr. Francesco Del Galdo

“At present, patients with the most aggressive forms of scleroderma have a very poor prognosis”, says Dr Del Galdo. “The support of the Kennedy Trust will hopefully enable us to identify patients before they suffer irreversible organ damage, and make early interventions that will stop this disease in its tracks.” Based at Chapel Allerton, the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine and the NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre are world-leading research groups dedicated to improving diagnosis, therapy, intervention and outcomes across the spectrum of rheumatic and musculoskeletal medicine. The Kennedy Trust was established in 1965 by Mathilda Kennedy – the daughter of M&S founder Michael Marks – provides financial support for research into rheumatic and related musculoskeletal, immunological and inflammatory diseases. This research continues a long-standing relationship between the University of Leeds and the Marks family.

Mothers Three North Leeds mums recently set up Wave, a peer support group for mothers who may be finding things a little difficult.

Amanda Grey, Helen Ogden and Emma Gill met when they were all in the early months of parenthood. Amanda was struggling to find local support after her daughter was born prematurely, and Helen and Emma were both receiving treatment for postnatal depression. By talking openly and honestly together, they were able to support each other towards recovery. They now have three thriving toddlers and want to help other mums in the area who might be struggling to find support.

RJC Dance values the expressive power of dance and is particularly skilled at engaging young people from all backgrounds. The dance camp gives them an authentic experience that focuses on how dance can unlock their potential, creativity and style, rather than

limiting their dance experience to the perfection of technique. The camp will enhance co-ordination and rhythmic skills, improve fitness, flexibility, and appreciation for music, and encourage a healthier lifestyle, alongside the making of new friendships.

Younger Life Beetles are Brilliant!

Medals for Leeds Swimming Star Kidiest Hodgson, who is in Year 8 at Allerton Grange, recently travelled to London to take part in her first national completion with the English Swimming Schools Association (ESSA), and won four bronze medals and a silver!

At a talk for primary school pupils, organised in partnership with Ilkley Literature Festival at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), MG Leonard (Maya) had her audience in stitches as she demonstrated the ‘heebie-jeebie’ dance that she used to do at any creepy crawly encounter. Maya entertained the children with the tale of her transformation from insect hater to keeper of pet beetles and bestselling author of books about them. Having worked in theatre on stage adaptations of children’s books, Maya knew the ingredients for a good story: “You need an amazing adventure with compelling characters and the villain must be uber bad!” Whilst searching for some terrifying creepy crawlies to accompany her villain, she discovered the wonderful world of beetles. “Beetles are almost everywhere and I soon realised that beetles are good”, she said. “We use insects to scare in stories, but let me tell you something, if I took you into a forest and you saw no insects at all, the forest would be dying.”

With 360,000 species of beetle discovered so far, they are now the heroes in Maya’s books. Her first book ‘Beetle Boy’ won the Branford Boase Award in 2017, and ‘Beetle Queen’ and ‘Battle of the Beetles’ complete the trilogy. A fourth non-fiction book about beetles is due out this year. Pupils from St Margaret’s C of E Primary School in Horsforth were among the visitors to GSAL. “Her books are so exciting, and I like the idea that beetles are so clever”, said Year 5 pupil Cora Dixon. “How can anyone be scared of beetles?” The other schools at the event were St Joseph’s School, Wetherby, St Peter’s Cof E, Harrogate, and Leeds primaries Swarcliffe, St Augustine’s, Chapel Allerton, Farsley Farfield, and GSAL Junior School. GSAL has sponsored the Ilkley Literature Festival Children’s Festival since 2012, and has now entered into a new arrangement to sponsor the festival’s Spring Lecture Series 2018 to 2020.

Kidiest trains at the City of Leeds Swimming Club three mornings a week, getting up at 4am, and six or seven evenings a week, depending on whether she has an up-coming competition. She has been competing since she was in Year 5 and hopes to compete in national competitions in August, and from there on to European championships. In the long term she hasn’t ruled out Olympic aspirations and following in the footsteps of other acclaimed swimmers from her club; Georgia Coates was the youngest member of Team GB who went to Rio in 2016. Kidiest hopes to continue training hard and winning more competitions to apply for university scholarships in America when she finishes school. Mr Roper, Headteacher at Allerton Grange, granted a donation from the school to help cover the costs involved in travelling to the completion. He said, “We are delighted with Kidiest’s fantastic achievements. She is a lovely, polite and friendly student who tries her best both during school and with her swimming commitments. She embodies our motto of ‘Aspire, Grow, Succeed’, and is an inspiration to other students.”

Mad Hatters LEAP Ahead in Enterprise Scheme Mad Hatters, a student run company from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) recently showed they had heads for business by scooping four accolades at the eleventh annual LEAP awards, which recognise budding entrepreneurship in West Yorkshire secondary schools.

and its results to a panel of business advisers and prepare an annual report with financial accounts. Run by ten Year 12 GSAL students, Mad Hatters won LEAP’s top prize, the Westcom Networks Award: Best LEAP Enterprise Company 2018, for their hat business. They also won awards for best company report, best trade fair marketing and best company presentation. They were one of 18 companies participating in LEAP this year, involving 200 students from GSAL, Bradford Girls Grammar School, Allerton High School, Ralph Thoresby School and Woodhouse Grove. “Each of this year’s teams has achieved a very high standard, although the winning teams really did stand out from the rest of the field”, said LEAP chair Steve Webber, managing director of Westcom Networks. “Each pupil spent valuable time creating new brands and services whilst learning about how to take them to market, control costs and report responsibly about all aspects of business.

The Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP) is a social enterprise that enables students (aged 14 – 19) to set up their own companies for a year. They have to raise their own share capital, choose and make or buy a product, write a business plan and market the product. At the end of the year, teams present their ‘company’

“The aim of the LEAP programme is to give students practical experience that they can apply in the real world as they undertake public exams and interviews, go onto university, apprenticeships or enter the job market.”

We urgently need families to accommodate our international adult and junior students. We offer competitive rates and excellent back-up support. So, if you have a spare, single, twin or triple room, do please get in touch! Centre of English Studies is an award winning, British Council accredited, English language school.
