the local 28 bus service, I passed your comments on to Cllr Barry Anderson for him to discuss with First Bus. After receiving an unsatisfactory response, a further meeting took place between some residents and Cllr Anderson to discuss the issues and to try and come up with a suitable solution. It was agreed that he would meet with First and Metro and report back in due course.
Grass Cutting In Adel Woods and Wayland Estates Adel Crag Residents group met with Cllr Anderson a couple of months ago regarding grass cutting and shrub maintenance on the Adel Wood and Wayland Estates. There has been no improvement, so I took it up with Cllr Anderson. He has assured me that he will keep the pressure up on the agencies concerned to get the matter resolved as soon as possible. A CAMPAIGN FOR FAIRER BUS FARES We’ve all noticed bus fares in Leeds have been creeping up, not so gradually, over the last few months. Now a new campaign called ‘Fairer Fares’ is looking to reduce fares and get a better service. Organiser, Stuart Long, has made numerous complaints to the bus company about buses being late or not turning up and getting replies citing ‘traffic’ and ‘vehicle failure’ as reasons, so he decided to start the campaign. ‘Fairer Fares’ has written to Metro’s Chairman and awaits a time and date for a meeting. Local MPs Greg Mulholland and Rachel Reeves, along with a number of councillors have come out in support of the campaign. Ultimately, Fairer Fares would like to see better regulation under the Local Transport Act 2008, and Quality Contracts which Metro has the power to put in place now, but has chosen not to act upon for the next two years.

Council Tax Banding Leaflet I was recently asked by residents about a leaflet from an organisation in respect of Council Tax Bandings and I took this up with the Council Tax section who advised: “Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for this type of service to be offered, nor is it illegal. Council Tax Bandings are dealt with by the Valuation Office, which is part of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, and it’s free and relatively straightforward for Council Tax payers to challenge their banding.” Potential Trading Standards Issue I was also recently approached by a local resident about the following incident at their home: “whilst the Council was tarmacing their road, someone knocked on their door (claiming to be from the Council) and asked if they wanted their drive done. He stated they could pay by cheque and the work was guaranteed for 10 years. He arrived at 7am and dug the drive up, filled in a small amount of tarmac, then knocked on the door and demanded cash. As the job was shoddy, the resident refused to pay any more but the person came back the day after and demanded more money.” West Yorkshire Trading Standards responded: “There’s no doubt that the resident has been the victim of the classic itinerant tarmac gang. They should have been given cancellation rights and it is an offence under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations not to do so. It is important to raise awareness and warn people about rogue traders, and to reinforce the fact that the council would never engage in ‘selling off’ excess tarmac to householders, which was suggested in this case.” I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all A Very Happy Christmas. 10 December 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk
With thoughts turning to presents, we shouldn’t forget we are already generous givers on a weekly basis. Putting rubbish in our bins legally constitutes a gift to the council. It’s their wheelie bin after all and so too, in law, are its contents. Never mind stories about council spies rummaging through our bins. They are entitled to, if that’s what grabs them, though it seems they still haven’t found the missing ring. Many householders were recently advised of new bin collection days. This stems from last year’s bin strike which was prompted by re-grading proposals and the potential loss of earnings for bin men. In the end the regrading proposals stood coupled with the introduction of performance related pay ensuring overall earnings were maintained. Though the strike cost the council some £50,000, not to mention the inconvenience to residents, it has yielded savings of £2.4 million annually. The old ‘job and finish’ has gone, absenteeism has reduced, there is increased flexibility and the collection routes have been redesigned. Inevitably there are odd teething troubles – contact 0113 222 4406 or refusecollection@leeds.gov.uk should you experience any. That annual £2.4m will come in useful now that we know the council needs to save £150m over four years, representing a 28% reduction excluding education. Between 2,500 and 3,000 jobs are likely to go, about one in six of those 17,000 staff not involved with education. Even though typically about 1,900 staff move on each year, the warning signs are distinctly flashing amber. Whatever the cuts, less government funding could lead to calls for an even higher level of giving to the council. Sadly though that seems more likely to come via increases in the council tax and other charges than from the gifts we already make through our wheelie bins.

There was a tremendous team effort from the Association, supporting Leeds City Council in its decision to turn down the application to build 68 homes opposite Adel Church. We attacked them on the grounds of increased traffic congestion; adding to our already overcrowded primary schools; destroying a medieval landscape; ignoring almost every recommendation in the Adel Neighbourhood Design Statement; ruining the greenbelt near the oldest building in Leeds – Adel Church; and the design of the houses, which was identical to those built by the company in other areas. They also refused all attempts to consult with local residents. We collected almost 1,000 petition signatures, around 100 letters of objection, and support from a wide range of local bodies and groups such as the Civic Trust.

At our last meeting we were addressed by the owners of the Car Wash on the Otley Road who are planning to revamp the site. There was much support for this, but opposition from at least one householder who lives nearby. We welcome visits by local business people who are planning developments in our area as it gives them an opportunity to get the reaction of 40 – 50 people at one time. A number of local issues were raised at the last meeting. This is the forum for you to bring your concerns to local councillors and planners. Baubles. Who knew there were so many varieties? It’s a nightmare! You could just spray paint a couple of golf balls and leave it at that, but every year you are enticed to buy more. Making your own can be fun. Over the years we have collected beautiful decorations – some made by friends and relations, some by children at primary school, some purchased at art or craft fairs. Each one tells a story which is conjured up each time you hang it on a tree. Embarrassing Moments. With all that food, drink, tinsel and the possibility of a karaoke machine, Yuletide is a minefield of embarrassing moments waiting to happen.
Gifts. We spend a great deal of time stressing about what gift to get for whom. Hopefully, you’ve kept your November issues of North Leeds Life and are making use of our Gift Guide!
Jingle Bells. You may not hear bells the rest of the year, but soon as December rolls around, there’s a bell ringing version of every song ever created.
Kids. Of course the season is all about the kids, with their list of demands and attempts to convince us they haven’t been naughty all year (we’ll just brush that month of detentions aside). But at midnight on Christmas Eve, like magic, we’re all kids once more (clearly, we’ve watched that Coca Cola advert one too many times).

Negotiations. Where will you have Christmas dinner? What’s the maximum spend on any one gift? Christmas is like working at the United Nations when it comes to keeping everyone happy. Office Parties. A great chance to see your uptight co-workers let loose – something to mock them about for the rest of the year! Returns. It may be ‘the thought that counts’, but there are an awful lot of returns and exchanges happening come January. Be sure to hang on to those receipts! Santa. No matter how old you are, it’s always a thrill to see a really authentic looking Santa Claus. Deep down, we all hope for a Miracle on 34th Street. TV. It’d be easy to do nothing but watch TV over Christmas. The soaps are the real treat though. In real life, Christmas is a joyous time, in soaps, it’s full of punch ups, explosions and murder. Wrapping Paper. There is some truly beautiful wrapping paper around and it makes for a lovely looking pile of gifts under the tree. Remember to recycle though!

There’s nothing quite like the smell of a lovely Christmas tree permeating through the house, but you’re vacuuming up pine needles until February. Quality Street. You’re already thinking of your favourites, aren’t you? We will arm wrestle anyone for one of those flat, toffee ones with the gold wrappers. Unity. Whatever feud is happening between family and friends, let’s call a ceasefire over the Yuletide season.
Visitors. You may not see people all year, but at Christmas, everyone comes around. Come January, you’ll have had so many people through your house, you’ll wish you’d have charged admission. X-rays. Is Christmas really complete without at least one trip to the hospital? We think not. Icy pavements, food poisoning, alcohol poisoning, falling over gifts – something will get you!
Yelling. If you manage to make it through the stress of the Yuletide season without letting fly at someone at least once, you deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.

Zzzzz. It may well be a joyous time of year, but it’s also utterly exhausting. ‘Tis definitely the season to have extra naps!

David Cameron, Gary Lineker, Lorraine Kelly and Arnold Schwarzenegger are among the personalities revealing their favourite recipes in a new book, designed to raise money for The Prince’s Trust The book was produced by a team of corporate fundraisers from marketing services provider Communisis, as part of The Princes Trusts’ Million Makers Challenge, which sees companies competing nationwide to raise money for The Trust, by creating products with mass appeal. Teams run their own ‘mini-enterprises’, which aim to make as much profit as possible from an initial investment of just £1,500. Dozens of A-list celebrities from film, TV, music and sport, have joined forces for The Celebrity Cookbook, a collection of recipes and personal stories about why they chose these particular recipes. Leeds City College’s Thomas Danby culinary staff and students cooked all the recipes, and provided the kitchen location for photographer Orly Lyndon. Healthy eating is important for everyone but especially people with long-term health conditions or a strong family history of heart disease, diabetes or stroke. Leeds City Council, in partnership with NHS Leeds, is introducing food tours of the market on the third Wednesday of every month to show how easy it is to shop, cook and eat healthily. Rachel Vine, Community NHS Dietitian will lead tours of up to 10 people around the market. The tours will focus on learning about the various healthy food options available and where to find them, and then move to Jamie’s Ministry of Food for discussions about food and health. “People often know what dishes they’d like to make. But getting all the ingredients together and putting it into practice every day can be a struggle”, said Rachel. “Our shopping tours can make it easier to make healthier food choices. And we hope to show you that healthy eating doesn’t have to cost more.” Recipes using information from the tours will be published on the Leeds markets website www. leedsmarkets.co.uk. It was a love of independent gift shops that prompted Lynne Denton and Rachel Mitten to open Wrapped back in 2005. With no retail experience (except for Lynne’s Saturday job at Woolworths back in the late 70s!), they took the plunge and their small but perfectly formed shop has been selling beautiful, unusual and quirky gifts ever since. ‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY INDULGENT! Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for cooks. Family and friends are welcomed in, often in great numbers, solely, it appears, to cram vast amounts of food into their rather rotund bellies! Whether it’s a few festive drinks with vol-au-vents and little rounds of smoked salmon, or the visit of rarely seen uncles and aunts for whom an anisescented ham with plenty of trimmings is in order, there is always work to be done. Festive flavours are rich, spicy and aromatic, with plenty of booze and fruit: orange and cloves; brandy and port with plums; nutmeg and allspice. Turkey, however, I find disappoints. There is something very uninspiring in the slightly bland meat, which, if not cooked very precisely can be rather dry. For this reason many enjoy lovely feathered game birds, or maybe a goose with fat so bountiful as to never let the meat dry out. And, it provides utterly superb roast potatoes! Or, how about trying the gamier pheasant or partridge? In fact, push the boat out, and roast a leg or loin of wild boar! I have called a handful of local butchers in north Leeds and all could supply these with a bit of notice. Later this week I shall be stuffing a loin of wild boar with chestnuts and mushrooms, after a long soak in some red wine (the boar, not myself!), then very slowly roasting it. 22 December 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

Cooking is a wonderful way to gain an insight into other cultures and history and to find inspiration. Scandinavian Christmas food provides a welcome change from hearty British dishes – Salmon Gravad Lax is an easy to prepare, refreshing alternative to smoked salmon, and the potato and anchovy gratin dish Jansson’s Temptation is remarkably versatile if you’re looking for a way to turn yesterday’s leftovers into something new and exciting. For sweets, the only place to turn to is Italy: the light, sweet cake of Pannatone and Pandoro, the bittersweet almond Ricciarelli and Amaretti biscuits, and my mother’s favourite – the candied fruitcake Panforte. We may chastise ourselves for overindulging at this time of year, but why not? It’s a time to savour special treats and ingredients not enjoyed throughout the year. It shouldn’t be dreaded as a time of toil and hard work, but looked forward to and addressed with more celebratory flair than usual. Just spare a thought for the cook!
GREEN TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas is bad news for the environment so how can we enjoy the festive season and keep it ‘green’? Planning is important when supermarket shopping. Buy what you need so there is no waste. Reduce food miles by choosing local and seasonal vegetables and meat. Avoid cards with glitter or metallic wrapping paper as neither can be easily recycled. Trees with a cut trunk can be recycled at many Leeds Council facilities. However, if you buy a tree with roots, it can be planted in your garden and dug up year after year. LED bulbs, for the tree lights, use less electricity than the traditional. Remember to keep the central heating thermostat at a sensible, not tropical setting! For presents, why not try one of the many ‘virtual gifts’ offered by charities? There are many environmentally friendly options from adopting a pygmy hippo to planting a mile of hedgerow – the choice is bewildering. Perhaps a subscription to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust or The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds would spark a dormant interest in nature. The junior equivalents are Wildlife Watch and Young Explorers. A selection of food and a feeder to attract the local birds (a squirrel guard is almost essential in suburban gardens) will give hours of interest and pleasure. How about making gifts? One of our favourites last year was a cardboard box, covered with Christmas paper and filled with beautifully decorated jars of home made chutneys, jams and lavender bags. This gift had so much love and care wrapped in it, we were thrilled recipients. After Christmas, remember to recycle all you can. Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon Woodpeckers climb and excavate nest holes in trees. Their drumming action on dead wood in spring is a sure sign of their presence on territory. Flight is in deep undulations. Of the three all-year residents, the most familiar is the great spotted woodpecker in woods, parks and gardens and now a regular visitor to bird tables. It is a black and white bird with large oval shoulder patches and red under the tail. Males only have a red hind crown. Bright green with crimson crowns, green woodpeckers are larger and more rural, preferring open areas near trees which resound with their loud laughing calls. Lesser spotted woodpeckers, only chaffinch size, are black above with white bars across wings and back, the male sporting a red crown. Shy and elusive, they inhabit deciduous woods, parkland and river valleys with alders. The first two are increasing widely but the lesser spotted is now very scarce, though easily overlooked.

I’m pretty strict when it comes to celebrations. Birthdays? Fine. Anniversaries? Only significant ones. Work leaving parties? – well how long did they work there? If it was only a few months they can really stroll off into the sunset without me chipping in for a gift. I don’t partake in dancing around Stonehenge for the summer solstice, I hate Halloween and don’t even talk to me about Bonfire night. But Christmas….ahh, I LOVE Christmas. I love Christmas lights and shopping when it’s a bit nippy out. I say I don’t mind it being a bit nippy – having spent the last three years living in Canada, nippiness is much preferred to the minus 35, snow up to your knees, fear of frostbite kind of cold that goes with Christmas there. I love how the season makes everyone a little happier. It even manages to melt my ice queen heart. I love sending Christmas cards, making eggnog and hiding presents before the big day. And, I feel at ease with you now so I trust you enough to tell you this: I may very well be 29, but I am still the first one up on Christmas morning, waking everyone up to open gifts. I love all of that, I really do. The only thing I can’t stand about Christmas is the music. Can we all just make a pact to put the Mariah Carey Christmas album and that God awful song by Slade in an incinerator? .............................................................................................

A TIME FOR GIVING For many of us this is a time of fun, indulgence and excess, but it’s also a time to reflect. This year, a number of major disasters shook the world (the Haiti earthquake in January, Pakistan floods in August, and, most recently the double whammy of the Java tsunami and volcanic eruption). These saw everyone dig deep for donations. But just because the news coverage stops, doesn’t mean the need for aid does. Recently Haiti was hit with a cholera outbreak and a tropical storm too, to make matters even worse. The DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) raised over £101 million over its six month Haiti appeal. In the worst earthquake to hit the country in over 200 years, 230,000 were killed, 300,000 injured and over 1.2 million left homeless. DEC donations have helped with food, medical and water supplies. Red Cross has also provided much relief in the form of kitchen, shelter and hygiene kits, but much more is needed. Over 20 million people have been affected by the floods in Pakistan with over 1.9 million houses damaged or destroyed. Many displaced people are now returning to their home areas but emergency shelter is still needed. As of the end of October, ShelterBox had sent enough emergency shelter kits to Pakistan for over 140,000 people and are now working on a repatriation program. So, while we all lavish gifts on our families this Christmas, remember a small donation to a charity could help a family on the other side of the world in desperate need.

Another year is nearly over and once again we have had all sorts of weather thrown at us. As the year progressed, some things have been late, others early – frustrating, especially if you had planned to enter a local show. Deciduous shrubs and trees can be pruned into shape now, taking away any crossed branches. In a small garden you may need to reduce their size slightly, but do not prune back too much. Hopefully, if you have grown sprouts, we will
have had a frost – it makes them taste much better! Potatoes planted in August will be just about ready for the Christmas table. Nothing much is going on in the garden in December, but no doubt some gardeners will find a job or two to do – even if it’s just cleaning and oiling their spades, forks etc. before putting them away.

In the last three years we have seen the plot really take shape and last year Graham gave it a good digging over and installed wooden boards round the edges to stop any grass encroaching.

Mrs Fezziwig is played by accomplished actress and singer Beverly Klein, and Robert Finlayson and Sarah Moyle fill the roles of Bob and Mrs Cratchitt. ONE OF MOZART’S GREATEST CHORAL WORKS Mozart’s Great Mass, containing some spectacular double choruses which require great virtuosity on the part of the singers, is part of a major Mozart concert at Leeds Town Hall, 7.30pm on Saturday 29th January.
Great Mass are less clear. As the Mass had not been commissioned, perhaps he decided to concentrate on other money making projects. Several lesser composers have tried to ‘complete’ it, with varying degrees of success.
Leeds Festival Chorus will be performing with the acclaimed Northern Sinfonia, conducted by Simon Wright, and soloists Elizabeth Watts and Sophie Bevan (soprano), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor) and Neil Baker (bass-baritone).

CHEERS FOR CHRISTMAS! Once again, Theatre of the Dales is touring Three Cheers for Christmas. It will be previewed at Rawdon Quaker Meeting House on Sunday 12th December at 7.30pm (donations to Amnesty). A festive treat for all the family, it features three Kings, three Shepherds and the three Spirits who teach Scrooge that Christmas isn’t the humbug he takes it for. A comic tale from the Wakefield mystery plays, Mak the Sheepstealer flows into the touching storyline of Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors to form a perfect companion piece to Dickens’ timeless Christmas Carol. And as if that weren’t enough, they’re adding an old mummers’ play this year, in which St. George fights a dragon and meets - you guessed it - Father Christmas. Theatre of the Dales’ open-air Shakespeare next summer will be Much Ado About Nothing, directed by David Robertson and set in the post-war forties. LEEDS PHIL TO PERFORM FULL MESSIAH Leeds Philharmonic Chorus will perform Handel’s Messiah in its entirety at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 11th December. The Chorus is looking forward to the challenge of singing it in full, as it is more usual to sing this work with several movements omitted. The Phil will be accompanied by the highly-regarded Manchester Camerata, one of the UK’s leading chamber orchestras, conducted by Mark Hindley. Mark took over as Chorus Master in 2008 and, together with Music Director David Hill, has been helping the Phil go from strength to strength. We organise visits to major new buildings throughout the year, every February we put on a series of lunchtime talks on the history of Leeds, and in the summer there is a programme of guided walks exploring the history of the city, followed by a buffet supper. The Jim Jones Revue – Burning Your House Down

The latest release from this London based outfit hits the ground running and the breakneck pace doesn’t let up. The Jim Jones sound draws heavily on 50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and the garage rock proto-punk of The Sonics, MC5 and The Stooges, by way of psychobilly groups like The Cramps. Opener Dishonest John sets the stall out early, its clattery intro giving way to a cavalcade of propulsive drums, frantic piano pounding, heavy riffing distorted guitars and the throat ripping, strangulated vocal of a man possessed. It pretty much chugs on in this vein for the rest of the album. It’s relentlessly high octane and the band hammer it out like they damn well mean it, playing with verve, rhythmic precision and, particularly on piano, keen dexterity. What the record may lack in textural variety it makes up for with consistency and a singularity of purpose; it rocks really hard and it’s very loud. Simply put, these boys aren’t messing around. I’ve heard that The Jim Jones Review magic really comes alive on stage and I can well believe their live shows are a riot. However, while Burning Your House Down is a well produced, impressively performed set of songs guaranteed to get the blood pumping, it benefits somewhat from its brevity. Were it to exceed its thirty three minutes by much it would risk outstaying it’s welcome.

The dearth of original ideas in Hollywood is such that an unending stream of remakes, reboots and ‘re-imaginings’ has become de rigueur. The acclaimed, offbeat Swedish vampire movie, Let the Right One In, is among the latest to be *ahem* revamped. As a fan of the original film, I was dismayed to hear of an American remake, thinking it would be little more than a cynical cash-in on the ubiquitous vampire genre. Thus, I was more than relieved, and pleasantly surprised to find the new version remaining true to its roots. The story concerns Owen, an awkward, lonesome youth whose parents are getting divorced. He is constantly bullied at school and his outlook is as bleak as the drab New Mexico housing estate on which he lives. He strikes up a tentative friendship with Abby, an enigmatic twelve year old girl who has moved into his apartment block with an older man assumed to be her father. It soon transpires that Abby requires human blood to survive and the man she lives with is responsible for collecting her sustenance. When one of Abby’s guardian’s food runs goes awry and lands him in the hospital, she is forced to fend for herself and … well, let’s just say things get a little messy. As in the original, the theme of vampirism is almost a subtext, with the fledgling relationship between Owen and Abby providing the film’s emotional centre. The last film I saw by director Reeves was the better than expected shakey-cam monster rampage, Cloverfield. I feared that with this remake he would ramp up the action element or overdo the horror and gore. I’m glad to say my fears were quickly assuaged and this respectful interpretation has much of the subtlety and restraint of its predecessor. The film has retained its period setting (early 1980s) and frosty, snow-blown locales, and features impressive work from its two young leads, Kodi Smit-Mcphee, who played the boy in John Hillcoat’s The Road, and Chloe Moretz, last seen as foul-mouthed Hit Girl in Kick Ass.

AKKIES CLAIM TOURNOIS DE NANTES Leeds Akkies were recently invited to represent the Rugby League Conference at Stade Michel Lecointre and beat the Nantes Bretagne Vikings 2416 to claim the prestigious Tournois de Nantes. Veteran prop Rich ‘Wilf’ Wilkinson scored the match-clinching try in his farewell appearance, ending an open age playing career that began in the 1980s. In the women’s event, Akkies ladies missed out on further glory as French national champions Pugol claimed the honours in a hotly contested four-team tournament. The event was a typically flamboyant affair, with a lone piper leading the teams onto the pitch, rock music greeting every try and a lavish post-match reception in the pitchside marquee. “It was a fantastic trip that will live in the memory of all our players for a long time,” commented tour manager Lotti Sills. “We couldn’t have wished for more hospitable hosts and we look forward to welcoming them to Leeds in June for the return fixtures.”
