CHOCOLATE FOUNTAINS FOR DEMENTIA UK Over 30 people, buzzed around two chocolate fountains at Hinsley Hall in Headingley recently. The event was to raise awareness of the need for more specialist Admiral Nurses who support the family and carers of dementia sufferers. Three sisters from Leeds, Manchester and Wolverhampton, whose dad died last year of dementia, are on a three year campaign to raise awareness and funds to pay for more nurses. There are only about 100 Admiral nurses in the UK and over 820,000 people with dementia. The sisters have already raised almost £2,000 and have climbed Croagh Patrick in Ireland. Their final challenge
will be Kilimanjaro in 2012. The chocolate fountains are just one of a series of easier ‘challenges’. ‘People want to contribute and chocolate fountains are a great way to have fun,’ organiser Breda Theakston said (shown here with sister Siobhan). ‘And not everyone wants to climb mountains!’ No charge was made but over £126 was raised. Adel Crag Community Association’s recent AGM was very well attended. The main issues were our local bus service time changes, streetlights and highways maintenance. The police informed us that the Eastmoor site was due to be demolished, but the listed buildings would remain. This is good news and will hopefully reduce the site’s attraction for youths.

LEEDS ODDFELLOWS RAISE £9,000 FOR HEART RESEARCH UK Leeds Oddfellows recently presented Heart Research UK with a cheque of over £9,000. To raise this magnificent sum, Oddfellos members took part in a variety of entertaining events throughout the year, including a Robbie Burns night, a 70s themed evening and a ‘Play your Cards Right’ competition. LJ 150 AT LEEDS
CITY MUSEUM
It is 150 years since the first synagogue was built in Leeds and the Leeds Jewish Community is marking the occasion with an historic exhibition organised by Makor Jewish Culture Office at Leeds City Museum on Sunday 28th November from 12 – 4pm. LJ150 is a two year project that aims to create a Leeds Jewish Heritage Book and a youth film. These outcomes will lead to participation in the of the Cultural Creative Olympiad in 2012. The exhibition will depict how hard it was for the first Jewish refugees who came to Leeds in the mid 1800s. Fleeing pogroms and persecution in Central Europe, thousands boarded ships which they thought would take them to America. Many of these actually docked in Hull and passengers were often told they had arrived in America. Some settled in Hull, others set out for Liverpool to continue their journey, but hearing that there was work in Leeds, especially in tailoring, many came here. Leeds was not a pretty place. The refugees lived in atrocious conditions, even children were working long hours in the overcrowded sweatshops. The exhibition tries to capture those early days. The small community where people had to help each other to survive, the Old Great Synagogue on Belgrave Street, the dreadful slums. Over the next year there will be various events, education sessions and talks. Groups in the community will be invited to put on events under the LJ150 banner. To get involved contact. Recipes and any stories associated with them, artwork, artefacts and information about Jewish artists from Leeds (e.g. Jacob Kramer, Naviasky or Joash Woodrow) are also welcome.

Jewish Genealogy Society education officer, Jeanette Rosenberg, will be at Leeds City Museum on 28th November with the Who Do You Think You Are? exhibition stand and lap-top ready to help answer visitors’ genealogical queries. The exhibition will also present a display on Leeds families, showing the contribution made locally and nationally by the Jewish community over the past 150 years. Visitors will be able to add their surname (or one they are associated with) to the ‘community tree’, and ‘post’ forms with family details of the when, where etc. The laden tree will enable the Society to record names that may have missed the censuses, or are too recent to have been included – all of which will help with the family history enquiries they receive.

I realise that summer is a distant memory. The nights have drawn in and the leaves are dropping, but I would still like to thank all those who worked so hard for Horsforth in Bloom. Their dedication resulted in Horsforth receiving Silver Gilt in the competition. A working group was established by the Town Council to survey public seats and benches throughout the town. As a result of their findings several old and dilapidated benches will be renovated or renewed. With the help of residents, several new locations have been identified for seating. The new benches are of sturdy construction and will have the Horsforth logo on them. Two large planning applications have been received for the former Clariant site and adjacent land at Low Hall Road. The combined applications are proposing up to 550 new dwellings. If both applications were successful there would be major implications for Horsforth and the highways infrastructure. And finally, a date for your diaries – the Christmas Lights switch on and Carol Service will take place as normal at The Green. The Lord Mayor of Leeds has accepted our invitation to officiate. The date is Saturday 4th December at 3.30pm. This is always a popular event for the whole family as Santa normally pays us a visit! I look forward to seeing you there.
TWO LARGE PLANNING APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED FOR THE FORMER CLARIANT SITE AND ADJACENT LAND AT LOW HALL ROAD 10 November 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk
It’s that time of year again. No I’m not referring to autumn leaves, bonfires fireworks and the like so much as to the annual highways letter to councillors telling them which roads the council deems to be in poor condition and in need of resurfacing next year. Major roads have their own separate budget so the letter is more to do with local roads such as estate roads. At first sight it all looks very encouraging with the Adel & Wharfedale ward wish list comprising no less than 26 local streets which will cost around £1.25m to bring up to standard. However experienced councillors know to be wary of seeming glad tidings from council officers. Sadly the warm feeling generated by the news that progress is at last to be made with maintaining our local roads doesn’t last very long. On closer examination the letter proclaims that ‘given the financial situation we may be only able to attend to’ what amounts to five of the streets a year. In council terms ‘may’ of course means ‘will’. So that’s it then – we’re only going to get a handful of local streets resurfaced next year. When it comes to deciding which ones are to be resurfaced next year that’s not a problem. The 26 candidate streets are very helpfully ranked in priority order based on their condition. The letter courteously invites ward councillors to nominate any of them for promotion to the first division for action next year. But then, and here’s the clever bit, promote one street, we are told, and it simply means another will be relegated. The highways people are never slow when it comes to putting ward councillors on the spot. Now here’s the bit you have been waiting for. The front runners for next year’s resurfacing currently include Kirkwood Close and Wrenbury Grove in the Cookridge area, and Creskeld Crescent, Gardens and part of Creskeld Drive in Bramhope. Considering that amounts to just half a mile’s worth in total it looks as though getting the other 21 streets resurfaced is going to be a long hard road.

Bearing in mind the policies of the Coalition Government on planning, this is very disappointing. The centralised planning policy (RSS) meted out by the previous government is to be abandoned. However, this is not yet law so developers are attempting to move ahead as quickly as they can before the axe falls. We are working alongside LCC planners who are defending their decision to refuse planning permission in the first place. We will be raising issues not raised by the Council, not least of which will be the traffic implications. Our Highways Department, by the way, has no problems with this development. NEW HEN-TREPRENEUR AIMS TO BRING FRESH EGGS TO URBAN FAMILIES Liz Milner was surrounded by hens growing up, but when she tried to set up a small hen house for her daughter, Emily, recently she couldn’t find affordable, traditional hen houses and materials locally. Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon Owls are prominent in folklore and literature and adorn this City’s coat of arms. The most familiar species is the tawny owl, responsible for the hooting and ke-wick notes heard after dark, including these autumn evenings. Large-headed and plump with broad rounded wings, this owl is mottled brown and finely streaked. It occurs in woods and wooded farmland and even in urban parks and large gardens. Little owls are also brown but smaller, flying in deep undulations. They like fields edged with small trees and occur up to moorland edges and the Leeds limits. Slightly smaller than the tawny, the barn owl favours lowland farmland and marshes with scattered trees. It has a slim body with a pale heart-shaped face and long wings and looks ghostly, with pale buff upperparts and whitish below. Numbers of these nocturnal birds remain fairly stable, except for the barn owl which has declined markedly, but there is a welcome hint of a revival.

After four months of training, the day of my big half marathon race finally arrived on October 10th. In the run up to it, I was petrified I’d twist an ankle or throw my back out. As it transpired, I came down with a mean case of laryngitis two weeks beforehand, which set my training back considerably. Nevertheless, I got myself to the start line with a friend/all around madman who runs marathons in his sleep, who had agreed to run it with me to ensure I didn’t die en route. There were 12,500 other crazy people participating and the atmosphere was electric. Some did it in fancy dress, including one guy who came dressed as ‘The Stig’ which I can’t imagine was very comfortable. I did fine up until about nine miles when my body threw a bit of a hissy fit. Everything hurt, but I powered through. An amazing crowd of people lined the route, cheering us all on. By the time I saw the mile 12 marker and knew I had just one more mile to go, I was ecstatic. I got rather emotional seeing the finish line, but crossing it, had me in floods of tears. Such an amazing feeling. So, it’s true, I may have caught the running bug a little bit, but the next person who says, ‘So, it’ll be a full marathon for you next then!’ I may just punch them in the face.

IN THIS SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS..... THOUGHTS CAN QUICKLY TURN TO SOUP! This month I am going to talk about the majesty that is soup! Many see this as a dish only for the winter months, but an enriching gazpacho, or a pungent wild garlic soup are just as at home in spring or summer. Soups are one of the oldest forms of cooking – a chunk of animal, a handful of vegetables and herbs, all thrown into a large pot with plenty of liquid to absorb the flavours and nestled atop a fire. One can imagine this being cooked thousands of years ago. In medieval times, sop or soupe was the name given to the bread over which the contents of the large cooking pot (potage) was poured. From here, the term soup has gone on to encapsulate a whole range of liquid-based gastronomic wonders. The variety from region to region is truly impressive. Whatever the style of cuisine, the one thing that will always make your soup stand out is a good stock. In Japan, miso soups and ramens are made from dashi, a stock base usually made from katsuobushi (or bonito flakes), dried fermented tuna flakes, and kombu, dried kelp. These impart a rich and distinctive flavour, and, like all good stocks, provide robust body – imperative for this style of cooking. I especially love a good chicken soup, as I’m sure everyone who has ever experienced its miraculous healing powers does. Every culture has its own take
on this classic. My parent’s Jewish Penicillin (never was a dish so aptly named), with its noodles and kneydlach (matzah dumplings), would cure any ill. The Grecian avgolemono is another favourite; here rice is cooked in the chicken stock before removing from the heat and finishing it off with a mixture of lemon and eggs – the eggs endowing the soup with a silky, unctuous feel. The quality of the chicken stock cannot be stressed enough: where a stock cube might suffice in lieu of the real deal in some instances, here it simply will not. As if one needed another reason for roast chicken on a Sunday! One can make soup out of almost anything – be creative! An onion, a little garlic maybe, a few of your favourite aromatics and vegetables (or even fruit), and of course a little water or stock, and whizz in a blender. They can be thickened with a few potatoes, a little rice or other grain, or some stale bread. Check out my recipes on the website (www. northleedslife.co.uk). I have included a spicy, dry and rich Chorizo, Tomato and Pepper soup (a tribute to the wonderful Moro cookbook, which I have been unable to keep my nose out of lately), and a wintery, almost (dare I say it?) Divino on Otley Road in Adel has been calling to me for some time – you know the way it is, you drive by and say “We must go to Divino’s”, and promptly forget until the next time you’re driving by! Well, finally, we booked a table and I think it was the start of a beautiful friendship! We had planned a family dinner and it was the perfect opportunity to try this neighbourhood ‘ristorante italiano’. Situated on the site of the former Bellini’s, Divino’s threw open their doors two years ago this month. Its aim was to bring some of the best Italian cuisine to the area and to present it in a stylish setting of striking Italian design – the furniture, lighting and fabrics were all imported especially from Italy. TALENTED CHEFS AND THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS They boast talented chefs, the best and freshest ingredients (sourced from the best suppliers both local and continental) and friendly, knowledgeable staff – and I’d have to agree. With five people trying to make up their minds over an extensive menu, this was going to take some time. A bowl of olives appeared and some interesting bread to help fuel the decision making. Our rather loquacious table finally fell silent as the starters arrived – spare ribs that fell off
the bone in a rich sauce; Frutti di Mare (£6.95) marinated seafood on a bed of celery, sweet peppers and red onions; Salmon Tartar – a lovely refreshing dish of chopped raw salmon infused with dill and lemon on a bed of salad; Caprino (£6.25) – grilled goat’s cheese, drizzled with honey with sweet pepper salad; and Mozzarella in Carroza (£6.25), deep fried Mozzarella and ham, encased in bread and served with a rich tomato sauce. The silence was followed by a flurry of activity as everyone demanded a taste of everyone else’s! ....................................................
WE HAD PLANNED A FAMILY DINNER AND IT WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO TRY THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD ‘RISTORANTE ITALIANO
.................................................... MMMMM MMMMM! Now, we were really looking forward to the main course. Two of us opted for pasta – a nice spicy Arrabbiata (£7.95) and rich Spaghetti Bolognese (£7.75). On the recommendation of our waiter I tried the beautifully fresh Halibut from the Specials menu, topped with vine cherry tomatoes in a delicate sauce with a touch of saffron, with a rocket and parmesan salad as a side dish – fabulous! The Anatra al Pepe (£13.95), breast of duck with shallots, peppercorns and cream brandy sauce got equal
rave review and the Agnello Alle Erbe (£15.95), boneless breast of lamb with a herby breadcrumb crust on a bed of Savoy cabbage with a marsala sauce was superbly juicy and succulent with just the right amount of pinkness. LIGHT, REFRESHING AND OH SO GOOD! I know, it was greedy to actually think of dessert – but everything had been so good so far, we just had to try. You know how cheesecake can be fairly heavy? Not here. The blueberry and raspberry cheesecake was moussey, light and refreshing, the Crème Brulée – great, the Lemon Tarte and Apple and Ginger Crumble were both encased in a wonderfully short pastry, light and crumbly – the perfect way to round off such a meal. NOW THEY WANT TO TAKE ME TO ITALY FOR CHRISTMAS! Well why not? It may be Italy in Adel but a little bit of Buon Natale can never go amiss when it comes to celebrating Christmas. Plant catalogues have been dropping through letterboxes for a couple of months – you could spend a fortune! Make sure you have the room for new plants and that the species will survive in the North. Most bulbs have been planted by now, but tulips are best left until this month. Remember to put some wire netting under the surface to stop squirrels getting at them. There are plenty of bare rooted roses around. Don’t discount those in supermarkets, they are just as good as those
found in garden centres. Prepare the ground by digging over well and adding compost. Take care to label each plant before discarding the packaging. Put them into a bucket with enough water to cover the roots and leave overnight. This helps to straighten out the roots and gives them a good drink before planting. Make sure they are firmly planted to stop any wind or frost from lifting them. Sadly, some garden centres sell roses that have just been potted up so roots haven’t had time to settle. Beware of plants that have moss or
weeds as they have been hanging around too long. As this month progresses, borders and beds can look dull Think about planting salx and cornus to give colour through until spring. Prune them back hard so that new stems grow and colour up for the winter. Winter flowering heathers give a nice sunlit look to a dark corner but needs room to grow. Lonicera nitida ‘baggenson gold’ is a small leafed shrub that can be clipped into shape but needs a sunny position to retain its brilliant colour.
Hardwood cuttings can still be taken from trees and shrubs. Select a cutting a foot in length, make a clean sloping cut at the top just above a leaf joint and a straight one at the bottom below a joint, and dip the lower part in hormone rooting powder. Dig a small trench in a shady spot with a mixture of sharp sand at the bottom and rest the labelled cutting on the base. Firm it well in and a year on they will have rooted to either pot up or plant out.

THE NATIONAL THEATRE BRINGS ALAN BENNETT BACK TO LEEDS After a sell-out success in London, The National Theatre is bringing Alan Bennett’s latest smash hit play, The Habit of Art, to the Grand Theatre in Leeds from 9th – 13th November.

LDFAS INTRODUCES BOOK PRESERVATION
A CATALOGUE OF WORLD TEXTILES Fine embroidery from India and the Mediterranean; delicate Japanese stencils; rare Egyptian costume; bold Pakistani prints; sumptuous Kashmiri shawls; fascinating pattern books, zebra and armadillo fibres, and how to make fibreglass curtains! With generous funding from the Clothworkers’ Company, staff at ULITA (University of Leeds International Textiles Archive) has undertaken the task of documenting and conserving seven major international collections. This has culminated in a database of over three thousand records, many of which are now available to view online. To celebrate the conclusion of the project, this exhibition will present highlights from the collections alongside details of how the work was undertaken, including the discovery of historical documentation, the stories behind the donors, the work of volunteers, and detailed analysis by a textiles conservator. The exhibition runs until 27th May 2011(excluding University Christmas vacation) at ULITA, St. Wilfred’s Chapel, Maurice Keyworth Building, University of Leeds, LS2 9JT. CARVINGS TO BE UNVEILED AT THE ARMOURIES
A member of the Royal family will unveil two carved panels, created by a group of woodcarvers from the West Riding Woodcarvers’ Association, at the Royal Armouries on Thursday 11th November. The panels, each of which measures 10’ x 5’, consist of 95 individually carved panels depicting scenes from the First and Second World Wars. There is a huge amount of time and skill in these works of art, with each carving taking an average of 100 to 120 hours to create. After the unveiling, they will reside permanently in the Armouries. THOUGHT BUBBLE SEQUENTIAL ART FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS FOURTH YEAR The biggest celebration of comic books and graphic novels in the UK returns to Leeds from 18th – 21st November. Thought Bubble, part of Leeds International Film Festival, presents its most exciting programme to date! The festival has a jam packed programme of events, including a massive comic book convention. This year’s convention welcomes some of the biggest names in comic books, including John Romita, the artist responsible for Kick Ass, which was made into a movie earlier this year, and Adi Granov, who illustrates the Iron Man series. The convention will also welcome hundreds of exhibitors – from brilliant small press artists and writers, to major UK retailers. Aspiring artists and writers are encouraged to bring along their art portfolios as representatives from Marvel comics will be on hand to give advice and will be on the lookout for the next big thing! THE GATHERING BRINGS A TASTE OF IRELAND TO LEEDS AGAIN The celebration of Irish arts and culture kicks off in Leeds from the 5th November. Dozens of events including music sessions, literary, film and educational events will take place at venues across Leeds, bringing some of Ireland’s finest artists to the city. Organised by the Irish Arts Foundation, based at the West Park Centre in LS16, events are designed to appeal to both those of an Irish background and people from the wider community with an interest in music and the arts. Lisa Morris, Irish Arts Foundation Development Officer explains, “The thinking behind the Leeds Gathering is to provide a platform for the Irish community in Leeds to showcase their rich and vibrant cultural traditions, we are also interested in developing new audiences for Irish arts.”

Held in the comfortable surroundings of the function room at The New Headingley Club on the last Friday of every month, it has featured a wide variety of accomplished musicians, playing great blues, mixed with folk and jazz, to appreciative audiences. There were big successes like the reformed Shuffle Monsters, Steve Phillips and the Helen Watson Trio. Other acts, Monkey Wrenchers, Waldo’s Washboard Wizards, Hokum Hotshots, Ray Stubbs one man band, Bon Appetit!, Kevin Conlon, Miranda vs the Crok, Manduh Box Band and Paul Judge’s Jackals all put on great shows too. Duncan McFarlane’s acoustic folk band on 29th October will no doubt be another great one. Dave Speight, who played the first ‘Roots’ gig, is returning to play on this 1st anniversary – a very welcome return of a great performer. “While he may be an unfamiliar name to many, Dave is highly regarded among his contemporaries as being one of the most technically accomplished guitarists around, a soulful singer and a highly engaging stage performer to boot” “The noisy crowd at The Great British Blues Festival in Colne, Lancashire, who were quickly hushed into awed silence during Dave’s performance on the acoustic stage last year can vouch for Dave’s expertise and dexterity as he quickly won the crowd over and held them spellbound in the palm of his hand !“ If you’re a lover of acoustic blues from the likes of Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Leadbelly and Robert Johnson then come along and enjoy a master of his craft at work. Following 2007’s Raising Sand, the sublime album recorded with Alison Krauss, Band of Joy finds Robert Plant still on fine form and making some of the best music of his formidable career. The fact that Plant declined a proposed extended Led Zeppelin reunion in favor of continuing in his recent musical vein shows how passionately he’s thrown himself into these recordings infused with blues, folk, and country. That famous voice has mellowed somewhat with age. Gone is the banshee wail of Led Zep’s rock behemoth heyday, replaced with a softer more subtly expressive tone perfectly suited to the material. The album features superb production, a solid, consistently rootsy feel, and Plant is aided, once again, by an excellent group of musicians. Special mention must go to Darrell Scott, whose work on guitar, banjo, mandolin, lap steel, pedal steel and accordion is flawless throughout. The entire LP makes for compelling listening from the gentle, haunting balladry of Silver Rider and I’m Falling in Love Again to the rockier Can’t Buy My Love, Angel Dance and magnificent album closer, Even This Shall Pass Away. Brilliant stuff.

FILM REVIEW I’M STILL HERE Directed by: Casey Affleck Starring: Joaquin Phoenix

When, towards the end of 2008, Joaquin Phoenix announced that he was retiring from acting to pursue an ill-advised new career as a Hip Hop artist, both eyebrows and suspicions were raised throughout Hollywood. That his every move was being followed and documented on film by his brother in law, Casey Affleck, only reinforced the opinion many held that the entire affair was a hoax. Following the movie’s release, the filmmaker and star have since come clean and revealed that the resultant documentary is, indeed, a cunning ruse. It’s a testament to Phoenix’s skill as a performer that, even with this knowledge, one feels as if you’re actually watching an intimate and candid study of a star in freefall. I’m Still Here, for me, brought to mind two films with Bob Dylan as their subject; the title references and echoes Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There, in which several actors played Dylan at different points in his career, and Don’t Look Back, D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary following Dylan’s 1965 tour of England. Both these films address Dylan’s manipulation of his public persona, his knack for self mythologizing, and his cagey and evasive dealings with the press. Similar themes are at work in I’m Still Here and Affleck’s impressively put together picture is stylistically reminiscent of Pennebaker’s film. Observed at close quarters, Phoenix’s spiraling meltdown is alarmingly convincing and produces many wonderfully comic moments. The star, who a year earlier had portrayed Johnny Cash in Walk The Line to universal critical acclaim, is unrecognizable as he piles on the pounds and grows masses of unkempt hair. He’s shown indulging in all manner of debauchery (doing drugs, ordering hookers from the internet) and there is much goofing around with his increasingly put upon inner circle. Phoenix actually spends much of the film behaving like a tremendous asshole and you can imagine him relishing the role with mischievous glee as he and Affleck chortle behind the backs of those duped by the prank. It’s hard to discern which, if any, of the celebrities who appear throughout the film were in on the gag. Ben Stiller seems genuinely baffled and David Letterman is visibly exasperated with Phoenix’s monosyllabic appearance on his talk show. A hilarious highlight is a meeting with P Diddy, whom Phoenix hopes will produce his debut hip hop album. The look on Diddy’s face as he assesses the questionable musical offerings is priceless. An intriguing and well made mockumentary, I’m Still Here is at once a canny satire on celebrity culture and the pressures of fame, and a portrait of an artist at a creative crossroads in the throes of a crisis of self belief.

‘THE KING’S SPEECH’ OPENS 24TH LEEDS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL It’s time, once again, for the Leeds International Film Festival! Sadly, Halo Reach is the final time that original developers Bungie are involved in the iconic series, with Microsoft handing the reins to fledgling developer 343 Industries. With this in mind, Bungie have set out to make the best game yet.
Thankfully, they have been more than triumphant in meeting their goal. Reach features a completely new game engine which provides awe inspiring, immersive environments in which to play. The familiar washed-out colour palette and distinctive Halo feel has been supercharged to show the skill and commitment of the team involved.

COOKRIDGE PRIMARY TEACHER NAMED INTERNATIONAL CO-ORDINATOR OF THE YEAR Mrs Jo Speak, teacher and International Co-ordinator at Cookridge Primary School, Leeds has been named as Link2Learn International Co-ordinator of the Year for all schools (both primary and secondary) in the UK. The award, which celebrates excellence and innovation in international schools partnerships, is organised by the British Council and supported by HSBC Global Education Trust. Entrants were required to submit descriptions of their international school partnership work, as evidence of the impact this international dimension had on teaching and learning in their school. Since arriving at Cookridge Primary school three years ago, Mrs Speak has worked tirelessly to create strong links with schools in South Africa, Nigeria, Mexico, Paraguay and Spain, with staff members throughout the school exchanging visits with the link schools. Cookridge Primary has been awarded £2,500 and Mrs Speak will use the award to invite children from Cookridge’s partner schools to join in a conference on global issues.
ADEL CHILDREN LEARN NEW GAMES FROM EUROPEAN PARTNERS Adel Primary School recently welcomed visitors from France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Iceland at the start of their new Comenius project, ‘Fit for Europe, Fit for Life’, which will focus on children’s games, sports and healthy lifestyles. Our children presented their traditional games at a special assembly. The visitors were especially interested in the game of conkers! Ring, skipping, clapping and chasing games were also included. It was very interesting to see which games had equivalents in other countries and which were different. We hadn’t realised there were so many variations on hopscotch! During the week the visitors taught our children games from their countries and also how to cook a traditional, healthy recipe. They loved making Icelandic soup with dried fish, a Spanish tortilla, and ‘tarte tatin’ from France. The project will continue for two years, during which time we will make books and videos of children’s games, including researching games of the past. The children will link with their European partners to learn about their games. The visit coincided with the European Day of Languages, so the children were also able to practise their language skills in real life situations. GIRLGUIDING’S VISION - 20:10, 20/10, 2010 On the 20th October Girlguiding Leeds celebrated the end of Girlguiding’s Centenary Year. The huge event at Headingley Rugby Stadium provided the opportunity for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section, Guiders, Trefoil Guild and parents to reflect on a memorable year, and to look forward to the next 100 years! The aim of Vision was to bring all members of Girlguiding UK together to share one moment in time. Units, districts, divisions and counties all over the UK came together simultaneously and celebrated in style. At Headingley Rugby Stadium almost 5,000 girls, leaders and parents were treated to a display of flags, drumming, music, song and dance. The inspiring finale was a mass renewal of the Promise at 8.10pm (20:10), led via satellite on the big screen by Chief Guide, Liz Burnley. The Junior Language Challenge is an annual competition that challenges children from across the British Isles to learn foreign languages. The competition is incredibly tough and to have three representatives from Yorkshire in the final is a massive achievement. The competition offers prizes to the winners with a family holiday of lifetime to Africa, up for grabs to the overall winner. The three finalists from Richmond House: Simran, Alfie & Alex (pictured with the other semi-finalists) are learning Chichewa – the official language of Malawi, which in itself is rather challenging.
RALPH THORESBY STUDENTS GAIN EUROPEAN RECOGNITION Dortmund in Germany and Leeds are partner cities. The Ruhr Valley currently holds the title of Capital of Culture 2010 and many events, exhibitions and projects have taken place to emphasise the richness and variety and our common cultural heritage in Europe. As part of this, young people in both cities were asked to explore youth culture through art and students of photography at Ralph Thoresby School took up the challenge. Abigail Jeffreys, Steven Richards, Hannah Poklad, Tom Cartwright and Aaron Briscoe had their work selected and shipped to Germany for the first of two exhibitions. The selected works are scheduled to be exhibited in both cities in a joint ‘U-gallery’ exhibition which is taking place in Dortmund until 18th November and will be in Leeds from 18th December – 13th March 2011. “To have work in a public exhibition is a great accolade – but to have European recognition is astounding”, said Brian Wilson, Director of Arts at Ralph Thoresby School. “Photography is a relatively new art form at the school and is very popular with the students. We have seen some very exciting standards achieved.”

LYJRO, the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra, recently returned from a life-changing musical and cultural exchange with Leeds’ twin city: Durban, South Africa. The trip was the band’s second to Durban, their main objective being to deliver musical workshops to children in primary schools. All members of the band participated whole-heartedly in the teaching: through singing, playing recorders, chime bars or percussion. Each day spent in the primary schools culminated in a joint performance which was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience. From the broad smiles on their faces, it was always clear just how much the children had enjoyed the day. LYJRO raised £8,000 and sent various instruments to a township arts centre, and this had been put to fantastic use. The band has now changed the direction of its fundraising and will be providing bursaries to music students at Durban University, to enable them to go to the primary schools (twinned with Cookridge and Bramley primary schools) and continue the teaching and musical development LYJRO has started. RALPH THORESBY STUDENTS SUPPORT OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Students in Key Stage Three at Ralph Thoresby School are collecting items and shoeboxes for ‘Operation Christmas Child’, run by the charity ‘Samaritan’s Purse’, for the fifth year running. Samaritan’s Purse provides emergency relief programs and desperately needed assistance to victims of natural disasters, war, disease, and famine. They offer food, water, and temporary shelter, meeting critical needs and giving people a chance to rebuild their lives. ‘Operation Christmas Child’ involves filling a decorated shoebox with items such as soft toys, stationery and sweets to send out to children in war torn countries. The students usually manage to prepare around 100 boxes but hope to beat that target this year.

Vicky Macnair takes on the role of Treasurer, Lotty Sills becomes Recruitment/ Membership Secretary, Kate MacKenzie Social Secretary, and Ruth Todd Women’s Team Manager. Reserve team player of the year, Matt Dunnington, will combine his job as Second XV captain/manager of sister club Old Modernians with a similar role for the Akkies - further evidence of the growing symbiosis between the two clubs. “We’re probably one of the few clubs where all teams/sections do virtually everything together”, commented club secretary Ade Tallon. “All home games are played as triple headers, all our socials are done together, even our tour is mixed; so the fact that women make up a fair chunk of our committee is only natural.”
