Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

SNOWDEN SCHOFIELD (1870-1949) Founder of an iconic Leeds business Leeds has long been a shopping mecca, drawing the crowds to its elegant Victorian arcades and handsome Edwardian streets and now to the glitzy precincts of the Trinity Centre and Victoria Gate. It used to boast some fine department stores – Marshall & Snelgrove, Matthias Robinson, Lewis’s, and, perhaps people’s favourite, Schofields, still fondly remembered as part of the fabric of life years ago. Schofields was a family enterprise, founded in 1901 by a young Bradford man, Snowden Schofield, in a modest drapery shop here in Leeds. It was to become a household name, its success mirroring the growth and prosperity of the city.

Snowden Schofield was born in Bradford in 1870, the son of a joiner. After his first job in a draper’s, he moved to London as sales assistant in one of the prestigious, elegant Knightsbridge stores: high class experience. Ambitious and energetic, he moved on to a position with Owen Owen in Liverpool, and there in 1901 he married and started thinking about launching his own business. He visited a friend in Leeds with a shop in the newly-opened Victoria Arcade, built to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, fronting what was then the narrow Upperhead Row. Although not the best part of town, he was told it was a good pitch, and he took the plunge, renting the corner shop, No.1, at £50 a year. He set up as a ‘fancy draper’, specialising in fashionable trimmings, lace and ribbons, gloves, hosiery and hats. On the first day the shop was packed and he took over £62 – success! Full of bright new ideas, he began to advertise on the front page of local newspapers (‘a dainty cream silk blouse with lace and all-round frills, only 4s 11½d’), and offered a postal service. Quality and good value were his watchwords. Before long he took over more shops in the Arcade, increased his clothing range, and looked for new opportunities nearby.

Outside the elegant Arcade, narrow cobbled lanes linked crowded courtyards and old buildings, including two long-established theatres, the Hippodrome and the Theatre Royal. Close by stood the historic mansion ‘Red Hall’, built in 1628, where King Charles I had been held captive in 1647 on his way to the executioner’s block in London. The handsome panelled room he had occupied was known as the King’s Chamber (and King Charles Street still exists). In 1912 Snowden Schofield bought Red Hall and incorporated the ancient building into his store. The King’s Chamber was restored as the Tudor Café, where shoppers could be refreshed to the genteel accompaniment of a quintet of lady musicians – they could choose a toasted crumpet for 2d or steak and chips for 1s 4d. Shopping at Schofields was an experience to be enjoyed and savoured. His path was not always smooth. In 1909, after only eight years together, his wife Mabel died, leaving him with a young family, but his wife’s sisters rallied round to help and he was able to focus on his growing business. The First World War intervened, but by the 1920s he was ready to extend again, acquiring further buildings along the narrow main road, now scheduled

to be rebuilt as the handsome new Headrow. In the 30s he acquired the Hippodrome when it closed, and later the ‘Cock and Bottle’ inn which had stood in his way. He began to envisage creating a new, modern store from this patchwork of property, to meet every need – from furs to furniture, from silks to saucepans. But again war intervened and his plans had to be shelved. Development began again post-war, when he bought the Victoria Arcade, home of his first shop, and linked it to the other buildings. But in March 1949 he died, aged 79 – more than a thousand people followed his funeral. His two sons took over the business and the plans for redevelopment. In the late 1950s, after acquiring the Theatre Royal, a staged programme of demolition, clearance and construction was implemented. The historic quarter of Red Hall, the theatres, the Arcade all vanished, and by 1962 the six-storey flagship Schofields building was completed. For the next twenty years it was Leeds’ premier department store.

It is still remembered today for its friendly atmosphere, its quality service, its three restaurants, its Food Hall to rival Harrods (where smoked salmon trimmings were given away at day’s end), its uniformed lift attendants, and the magic of the flying cash tubes, which Snowden Schofield had been the first to introduce to Leeds in 1906. Until Peter Schofield’s retirement and its sale in 1984 it remained a family firm, deeply valued by its loyal customers and staff. Snowden Schofield would have been proud of that.

Life&Style Slung Low Announces New Programme Slung Low theatre company recently unveiled its biggest programme of Pay What You Decide cultural classes for its third term at the Slung Low Cultural Community College at The Holbeck, Jenkinson Lawn, Holbeck LS119QX. It will host weekly evening courses, weekend events and daytime sessions to suit all schedules.

Its aim is to present ambitious, original adventures, each with a powerful, moving story at its heart. The Cultural Community College is a major part of the company’s ambition to create Leeds People’s Theatre: a new producer of epic, outdoor political theatre for the city combining Slung Low’s staging style with a programme of participation and training.

Starting 11th May, it offers an array of cultural activities for adults aged 18+ including plastering, self-defence, bike maintenance, Asian cookery, Yoga, and film-making. You can also learn how to write a soap-opera and the basic navigational tools needed to get lost with confidence! The Slung Low team will also offer a weekly course of performance skills training that starts with the belief that there are performers in all walks of life. The courses will be led by artists from the region, who will share their skills, experience and passions. This term’s artists include performer/ playwright Daniel Bye, playwright/musician Boff Whalley, Penny Greenland, Dr Usama Hasan, John Fox, the celebrated co-founder of Welfare State

Waterfront East (Thurs 6 June) The story of this important shipping intersection and the historical importance of Hunslet.

Leeds Civic Trust’s supper walks offer an opportunity to see Leeds in a new light. Six walks, led by experienced, knowledgeable guides, will take place between 30th April and 19th June.

Kirkstall Forge A Whole New Neighbourhood You may have heard whisperings about the regeneration of Kirkstall Forge, the former working forge just down the road from Horsforth, a stone’s throw from the famous Kirkstall Abbey and three miles from Leeds city centre. Hidden Leeds Presents Stuart Fortey’s ‘Fakespeare’ A new play by Stuart Fortey, ‘Fakespeare’, is witty, intriguing and clever. It’s about the sensational discovery in the 1790s of unknown documents written by Shakespeare and how they led to the ruin of a family. It will be presented by Hidden Leeds at several venues during May. In 1794 a noted collector of old books, Samuel Ireland, is delighted when his son, William, brings him documents written by Shakespeare, including the text of a play obtained from an anonymous source. But when the play is staged, scholars question its authenticity and denounce Samuel as a forger. The household is thrown into turmoil and family skeletons come tumbling out of cupboards as they find themselves caught up in a tragicomedy worthy of Shakespeare himself.

Aida's emotional landscape is also a very internal one; she is very close to death and experiences exile and loss most intensely. We are surrounded by situations today which could be Aida’s. Jealousy, ambition, patriotism and family conflict are eternal human experiences, and the focus in our production will be on the characters’ relationships with each other.”

Opera North Presents Powerful Concert Staging of Aida Verdi’s ‘Aida’ is the latest in Opera North’s series of concert stagings of large-scale operas. It opens at Leeds Town Hall on Wednesday 1st May, before embarking on an extensive tour. Theatre director Annabel Arden, designer Joanna Parker and conductor Sir Richard Armstrong, will reunite for Verdi’s Egyptian epic. And, once again, the Orchestra of Opera North will be right there amongst the singers.

Egypt is at war with Ethiopia. Aida, daughter of the Ethiopian king, has been captured by the Egyptians. Secretly, she loves an Egyptian general, Radamès, and he loves her. When he is selected to lead a renewed assault against the enemy, Aida is forced to choose between betraying her country or betraying her heart. Colombian soprano Alexandra Zabala takes on the role of Aida, with Mexican tenor Rafael Rojas as her lover. American baritone Eric Greene is his adversary, Aida’s father Amonasro, King of Ethiopia, with Alessandra Volpe is the Egyptian princess Amneris, Aida’s rival for the love of Radamès. Finnish bass Petri Lindroos sings the High Priest Ramfis, and Michael Druiett is the King of Egypt.

“Opera North’s concert stagings are so compelling because they put the singers in the same space as the audience, and the orchestra becomes the landscape of the piece”, said Annabel Arden. “Having them centre stage is truly thrilling, as so much of the drama is in their playing.

Although it is best known for the grandiosity and imperialism of set pieces like the famous Triumphal March, at Aida’s heart is a web of intimate personal relationships between people caught in the crossfire of international conflict, ending with a profound prayer for peace. Its leading characters are as conflicted as the war-torn world they inhabit.

“Yet it’s not a concert. The singers are inhabiting their roles fully, there is physical staging, full costume, and certainly psychological and emotional depth.

Leeds Photographic Society is holding its Annual Exhibition from 25th – 27th May in the Loft Space, Salts Mill, as part of the Saltaire Arts Trail. The exhibition features around 80 prints of members’ photography and includes images from all categories, both local and worldwide. Stunning wildlife, exciting sport action, beautiful landscapes, thought-provoking portraits and creative artistic images will all feature. The exhibition is open 10am – 4pm each day. Entry is free and visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite image.

Leeds Photographic Society is the oldest organised photographic society in the world. It meets at 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings in St. Edmund’s Church Hall, Roundhay. It regularly holds illustrated talks by keynote speakers, members’ evenings, outings and a number of in-house and inter-club competitions. New members of all abilities are welcome. Play Flags Up Shocking 1960’s Practices, Still Relevant Today The final production in Leeds Playhouse’s Pop-Up season is Amanda Whittington’s ‘Be My Baby’. It sees just the women of the Playhouse Ensemble Company performing together, alongside new cast member Anna Gray from Mind the Gap Theatre. Set in a home for young, unmarried women, Mary is a 19-year old and seven months pregnant when her mother delivers her into the care of St Saviour’s. As she, Dolores, Queenie and Norma bond over records and romance, they begin to understand what it means to give up their children and Mary realises she must fight to keep her baby. “’Be My Baby’ is one of few all-female scripts with a strong narrative for young women”, said Director Jacqui HonessMartin. “It was written about the ‘60s but is still relevant today. It’s only 60 years since women were given access to the legal rights that curbed the practices shown in the play, but one only has to look at current politics in the US to see how fragile those rights are.

“There are two groups of women in the UK for whom the issues of this play are still shockingly relevant. Refugees and asylum seekers have appallingly high maternal and infant mortality rates as there are barriers to them accessing even basic maternal care, and over 90% of learning-disabled mothers will have their babies taken into care.

Leeds Baroque Celebrates it Twentieth Year! In 2020 Leeds Baroque choir and orchestra will celebrate its twentieth year performing in Leeds and the surrounding region. It is the city’s only ‘period instrument’ orchestra performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Founded in 2000, and made up of professional, student and talented amateur performers, it is directed by Prof Peter Holman, an international authority on this repertoire. Leeds Baroque’s next performance is on Sunday 16th June, 3pm in the Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert Hall, University of Leeds, and takes them back to some of their earliest repertoire and the familiar name of Claudio Monteverdi. Monteverdi’s ‘A Venetian Vespers’ was written between 1620 and 1640 for the splendid surrounding of St Marks in Venice, following the famous Vespers of 1610. The Great British Food Festival is Back The Great British Food Festival is back for its fifth year at Harewood House, which provides a stunning backdrop for the festival. The event takes place over the three days of the late May bank holiday weekend, 25th – 27th May, 10am to 5pm each day. This year the line-up includes over eighty Best of British producers and street food vendors, celebrity chef demos, talks, kids’ cookery lessons, great live music, a ‘Cake Off’ competition, and ‘Men v Food’ challenges.

The main chef demo area hosts both local and well-known TV chefs. All demos are free, so everyone can pick up top food tips. There are also regular artisan foodie talks, foraging walks and kids’ cookery lessons to get involved in!

Food&Drink The Deer Park Re-Opens with Stunning New Look The Deer Park has also launched a range of high protein, low calorie dishes – with a wide selection of dishes under 750 calories, including King Prawn, Crab and Chorizo Linguine and Stir-Fried Beef Fillet Salad. Unusually, the Deep Park has a new, dedicated vegan menu and it is packed with flavoursome favourites with plantbased twists – Roasted Lentil Falafel, an impressive Burger with Slow-Roasted Tomato Sauce, Spiced Coconut Curry. The Deer Park on Street Lane recently reopened to reveal its stylish, new contemporary look, covered pergola, and new menu. Both the pub’s indoor and outdoor spaces have received an extensive makeover. A private dining space has been created that’s perfect for celebrations and private parties. And, the new pergola provides a lovely outside dining space – complete with cosy sheepskins to ward off chilly evenings at the moment. We popped in to soak up the new atmosphere and menu and had a really lovely evening – wonderful food and fantastic service. Difficult though it was to make a decision, we dived in with a fabulous, melt-in-the-mouth Scallops of the Day with hazelnut puree and chopped apple and kale salad; Szechuan Pepper Squid cooked to perfection in a beautiful light, golden crumb with aioli; delicious Truffled Goat’s Cheese on sweet chilli beetroot and diced pear with an orange and honey dressing; and Oven baked King Prawns and Lobster in garlic butter. This was quickly followed by a lovely Rack of Lamb with aubergine, roasted sweet peppers and potato

Dauphinoise; delicious Slow Cooked Belly Pork and Scallops with a side of tenderstem broccoli, asparagus and green beans in a soy glaze; King Prawn, Crab and Chorizo Linguini with tomatoes, garlic, chilli and white wine; and a Spiced Coconut Curry with miso sesame aubergine and broccoli on sticky jasmine rice from the Vegan Menu. We rounded the meal off with an amazing Melting Chocolate and Peanut Bomb, filled with Sticky Toffee Pudding and peanut butter cream, with vanilla ice cream and hot salted caramel sauce – this definitely added a touch of drama! Although not as dramatic, the Apple and Rhubarb Crumble and Custard, Sticky Toffee Pudding with Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream, and the Cheese Board were equally as delicious! Sikh Temple Wins Further National Lottery Fund Support

Once again Oakwood is getting ready to party! Organised by OTRA (Oakwood Traders and Residents Association), Oakwood Day 2019 is on Saturday 11th May, 12 noon until 7pm, and both residents and businesses will gather around the Oakwood Clock to celebrate the gateway to Roundhay Park. There will be food and all kinds of refreshments, as well as children’s activities. Live music and performances by local musicians, schools and groups will be taking place. There will also be numerous craft stalls, charity groups and street food (including handmade pizza and Rita’s Indian Kitchen). And, the Bar Stewards will be serving local beers and ciders and other alcoholic beverages.

A North Leeds Sikh Temple (Gurdwara Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji), has received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund towards the renovation of Potternewton Mansion. The award of £225,400 has helped to conclude a programme of urgent repair works to renovate the 200-year-old mansion.

Those performing include Roundhay Primary, Roundhay St John’s, Footloose Dance, Stage Coach, Genesis Cheer UK and a number of local bands. Potternewton Mansion was built circa 1817 by prominent wool merchant, James Brown. The house stood on a 700-acre estate with a 30-acre park at the front of the house. The mansion is significant to the area because the entire Chapeltown neighbourhood was developed on its estate lands. The mansion was in public ownership from 1901 to 2006, when it was purchased by a Sikh community for use as a temple. Cash for Kids Superhero Day Cash for Kids recently launched its ‘Superhero Day’ campaign on Radio Aire. Supporters are asked to fundraise, dress up and donate on Friday 10th May and all the money raised will stay in West Yorkshire. They are asking schools, colleges, universities and businesses to signup, be a hero and do whatever they can to raise much needed funds for the charity! It’s time to reveal your inner superhero and make a real difference to children with disabilities or who are disadvantaged.

In March, over 40 people gathered for the first session of a new, regular poetry event at HEART in Headingley. Taking place from 7 – 9pm on the second Monday of every month, ‘Soundbites’ is a stimulating mix of invited, published poets and open mic slots for emerging poets to showcase their work. Award winning poet and author, Mark Connors headlined for the inaugural evening, performing two sets that drew from his publications ‘Life is a Long Song’ and ‘Nothing is Meant to be Broken’, as well as some new material. He was ably supported by fourteen local poets of varying ages, who signed up for fourminute slots and between them presented an eclectic selection - some humorous, some serious. The standard of their work was excellent and its diversity impressive.

The next two Soundbites will take place on Mondays 13th May and 10th June at HEART, Bennett Road, Headingley. Admission is free, but donations to help cover the costs of staging the event are always appreciated. The headline poet for May is James Nash and there will an opportunity for 14 other poets to sign up for a slot to read their work on the night: first come, first served. Sri Lankans Celebrate the New Year Festival For the second year running, a group of expatriate Sri Lankans recently gathered to celebrate the Sri Lankan New Year Festival, led by monks from Leeds Buddhist Vihara. This included an exhibition of traditional rituals, games and performances by both children and adults. Traditionally, this celebration is the culmination of the annual harvest, which is celebrated in April and millions of Sri Lankans all over the world still celebrate it. The dawn of New Year is marked with the sun moving from the house of Pisces to the house of Aries. This auspicious time is observed with various activities, such as lighting of the hearth to cook milk-rice with hopes of peace, gratitude, and wishes of prosperity and wellbeing for the coming year. People use this holiday season to rekindle relationships with families and friends. The traditional â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Harvest Danceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was performed by children from the Leeds Dhamma School, which is affiliated to Leeds Buddhist Vihara. The dance, choreographed by Saroja Wijenayaka, portrays the reaping and winnowing of rice, danced to light drum beats and haunting flute music.

A variety of traditional delicacies, made of rice flour, coconut and sugar, was served as well as typical Sri Lankan cuisine with rice and accompanying curries, all donated by the community. The finale included typical games played in rural Sri Lankan villages, including placing the eye on the elephant, tug of war, sack race and lime and spoon race. CommunityNews Dog Lovers Raise Funds for Dogs for Good Alan and Amanda Hartley from the Leeds branch of the Barking Mad Dog Sitting Service, aim to raise £1,000 for the charity Dogs for Good, formerly known as Dogs for the Disabled, which trains dogs to help children and adults with all sorts of challenges – including autism, physical disabilities, special educational needs and dementia. Every penny donated to this charity helps to explore ways in which dogs can enrich and improve lives. Barking Mad has worked with the charity since October 2017 and sponsors two dogs. “It is our understanding of the benefits of dog companionship that led us to support Dogs for Good”, said Amanda. “Assistance dogs are life changing and

are hugely in demand. We are happy to do whatever we can to raise funds to train more puppies that will go on to make a difference to someone’s quality of life. Our facecloth puppies are a fun way to help and always bring a smile to people’s faces.” Alan and Amanda have teamed up with some of their host families to produce and sell facecloth puppies for a suggested donation of £2.50 each. I was reminded this month of a really great local resource. Our mobile library service has books for most ages and makes a number of stops each week in our ward. An Alwoodley resident contacted me to let me know how much they appreciated it and wondered if others were aware of the service. It stops for an hour at the ACA on The Avenue on Tuesdays at 2.45pm and High Ash Drive at 3.55pm. On Wednesdays it visits Treetops Community Centre, Shadwell Lane, at 10.35am, and Saxton Court on Tynwald Drive at 11.15am, both for 30 minutes. Then on Saturdays it is at The Dexter, Wigton Lane, for an hour from 3.25pm. If you’ve seen the mobile library at other times and locations – please let me know.

CommunityNews Meanwood Festival – Bigger & Better than Ever! Meanwood’s fifth annual festival, organised by Meanwood Valley Partnership, runs from Friday 24th May to Sunday 2nd June. It will be the biggest yet, with over 45 events at 15 venues, including local bars, cafes and restaurants, community halls, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm and Meanwood Park. The wide variety of events will kick off with a gathering of local brewers at Alfred to launch the festival beer (a collaboration between Hungry Bear, Meanwood and Ridgeside breweries), and will end with a street party at Terminus bar. In between, events range from arts, crafts, music and dance, to food, heritage and nature walks. You’ll even find life drawing and spoon whittling! A ‘first’ this year is ‘Music on T’Pitch’. Organised in conjunction with the Meanwood Cricket Club and the Myrtle Tavern, this family friendly concert (Sun 26 May, 12 – 7pm) will be a fantastic showcase for local bands, with something for every musical taste. Biscuithead & The Biscuit Badgers (described as ‘riotously odd, jolly and engaging’), Mestisa (Latin American folk), David Broad Trio (blues, swing, folk & country), Bassa Bassa (jazz dance), The Brazen (anthemic indie rock), Surefire Affair (indie/alt rock), Strangers in Trainers and Leeds Silver Steel Sparrows, are all lined up for the main stage. Between acts, The Dance Spot (www.dancespot.org) will present a smorgasbord of swing, Latin and African dance demos. These will be followed up by free taster classes in each style on Monday 27th at Holy Trinity Church Hall. The day will be rounded off by an evening dance with the David Broad Trio playing live. Children’s activities include Moo Music, Diddy Dennis Fire Engine, face painting and inflatable play areas.

West Yorkshire Family Mediation Service In 2018, over 118,000 people in England and Wales petitioned for divorce – a rise of 8% on 2017 and the first rise for 15 years. Divorce or separation is never easy, invariably it is an emotional journey that results in feelings of guilt, loneliness, depression, frustration, anger and anxiety. Smaller and less conspicuous than other finches, the Redpoll is still a striking little bird, especially when seen in breeding plumage or in big flocks. It has a stripy brown body, black bib, and a red spot on its forehead, whilst breeding males also have a red flush on the breast. Its main food is tiny birch seeds, supplemented in Spring by grass seeds and small insects on conifers, and in Winter by alder seeds. It is not uncommon to see Redpolls on garden feeders, especially when their natural food source is scarce. They often hang upside down on high branches in search of food and, outside the breeding season, roam in large flocks, mixing with other small birds, such as Siskins. Their main habitat is northern birch forests and young conifer plantations, as well as hawthorn thickets and hedges. As food availability varies, Redpolls are often on the move. Redpolls from northern Britain mostly move

south in September and October, whilst some southern birds move to the Continent. You can tell when a group of Redpolls is flying over, as they give out a purring trill, which almost sounds like buzzing. The bird we mostly see in the UK is the Lesser Redpoll, which is a separate species from the Common Redpoll, which is bigger and paler, and more common in mainland Europe. Leeds RSPB Group

We compare our green electricity against the amount of CO2 that would be produced from generating electricity with a national average fuel mix. This gives us a good idea of how much individual customers, and our community as a whole, have saved. What else do Yorkshire Energy do? As well as supplying green electricity, we try to reduce our environmental impact in other areas where we can. For example, we reduce our paper usage by sending account statements by email rather than post. This also helps us keep costs to a minimum – savings which we pass on to our customers.

York Gate Garden is Open for 2019 Season York Gate Garden on Back Church Lane in Adel recently opened its gates for the 2019 season and this year Perennial, the charity that owns and manages the garden, celebrates its 180th anniversary. The delightful one-acre Arts & Crafts style garden is widely considered to be one of the UK’s best small gardens and was recently featured on BBC Gardeners’ World. The team of gardeners and volunteers have worked hard to get the garden ready for visitors and there is lots to see, including stunning tulip borders, pots overflowing with grape hyacinths, daffodils and a wide array of other Spring favourites. The garden was created by the Spencer family in the 20th century and is designed around a series of outdoor rooms, each with its own character. It offers plenty of practical inspiration for visitors. There is also an inviting tearoom, a gift shop and an events centre.

'‘The Sisters Brothers’ finally gallops into British cinemas this Spring, following an acclaimed release in European and American territories. A darkly comic Western adapted from Patrick deWitt’s novel of the same name, it tells the tale of a pair of assassins out to capture a genius prospector and his unlikely ally. When the brothers decide to switch sides, the hunters soon become the hunted… Westerns were once the staple of a generation of moviegoers, yet it’s a novelty to catch one on the big screen today. It’s rarer still to come across a new Western which takes itself half seriously and isn’t just an indulgence project from Tarantino or the Coen Brothers. Inspired directors they may be, in a position to relive the movie styles they enjoy, but not necessarily those that studios can easily sell to modern audiences. But perhaps ‘The Sisters Brothers’ is going to change the landscape, offering one of the most innovative Western adventures of the decade. Delivering true to its traditions, the film strikes a jackpot combination of action, romance and comedy against a backdrop of expansive visuals and explosive effects. There’s also a glut of gore, violence and foul language to enjoy too. In Western tradition, the film is something of a buddy movie and gives us two double acts for the price of one. We explore the maverick struggles of Eli and Charlie Sisters, unpacking a troubled but charming relationship as the brothers attempt to track down their elusive mark. John C. Reilly — an actor blessed with a face for character — hands over a nuanced, sensitive study as Eli, who is more teddy bear than trailblazer. Joaquin Phoenix is magnetic as his volatile brother Charlie, a genuinely nasty anti-hero, yet ultimately compelling in his power and intensity.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmad are the assassins’ targets in a gently underplayed two-hander. Often the camera lingers on their exchanges, as if reading a romance, but in-step with the genre’s style it all remains light of touch. Memorable cameos from Rutger Hauer and Rebecca Root buttress the ensemble, but aside from some atmospheric crowd scenes, the streamlined cast feels intimately pared down. The film is the first English-spoken script directed by Jacques Audiard, and like the Spaghetti Westerns of the sixties, the picture is flushed with a continental visual flair. Perhaps it’s shot on film or uses old lenses, as there’s a dreamlike quality to the picture’s texture — an imperfect burnish which somehow steeps it in the past like a sepia photograph.

That said, there’s little romance for the 19th century West. Between bleeding, puking and peeing, Audiard’s lens focuses on an abundance of dirt, dust and grime, even down to the performers’ greasy hair and tobaccostained teeth. Occasional references to newfangled toothbrushes and luxurious, flushing lavatories serve as a poignant reminder of a mostly unglamorous frontier. Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat delivers a noteworthy score, drawing on plucked strings and stripped-down percussion to give the landscape a raw trailblazing feel. Some of the music takes cues from Ennio Morricone’s Spaghetti scores, which is no bad influence. A dynamic sound mix also ensures you feel each gunshot right to your core. ‘The Sisters Brothers’ is a brilliantly balanced new Western, offering visceral action, sharp wit and real pathos. It also deviates just enough from the established formula to surprise its audience. Leaving everything else on release in the dust, ‘The Sisters Brothers’ is a revisionist modern classic which demands to be enjoyed with all the scope, scale and sound of a big screen presentation. Saddle up and give it a shot.

Muzikantes 2019: Songs from the Heart of Europe! Muzikantes Festival is held in Leeds every Summer. Billed as ‘Songs from the Heart of Europe’, it features artists from the triangle of the three seas – the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic. The festival is organised by a handful of dedicated Leodiensian volunteers who are regular contributors to the Eastern European Folk Jam that takes place at the Chemic Tavern twice a month. Working with the numerous Eastern European communities in the area, the team has succeeded in creating an authentic tribute to the music and cultures that they love. This year the genres represented include Balkan, Klezmer, Ukrainian Folk Rock, and a Bulgarian Choir. The evening show will feature The Ukrainians, From East to East, Kibitz, and the Veda Slovena Bulgarian Choir, brought to us by BBC and WOMAD star Eugenia Georgieva. This is the rich dessert to an afternoon main course featuring pre-Christian spiritual music from Soma, and the hauntingly evocative voice and accordion of Katarzyna Wegrzyn. ‘Scott & Sid’ a Winner at National Film Awards The Yorkshire film ‘Scott and Sid’ recently won Best British Film and Best Supporting Actress at the National Film Awards - pushing aside the likes of Idris Elba, Emma Stone and Michael Caine! It was made for £1m, fought off productions that had budgets of over £6m. Filmed throughout Yorkshire, including Leeds, York and Bradford, it's based on the true story of two best friends from Bradford who set out on a 15-year journey to prove everyone wrong and make their film making dream a reality. Written, directed and produced by Scott Elliott and Sid Sadowskyj, this was the duo’s debut feature film – winning Best British Film is a fitting tribute to their dream chasing philosophy and film making ambitions. It’s hard to believe that they had never written, directed or produced a film before!

Leeds Jazz Festival 2019! The Leeds Jazz Festival returns from Thursday 18th – Sunday 21st July, with events also taking place the week before. This year’s headliner is Andy Sheppard, one of Europe’s leading saxophonists, who has made a significant impact on the international jazz scene, playing and writing for big bands and chamber orchestras as well as solo performances. He appears with Norwegian piano trio led by Espen Eriksen. A Jazz Celebration of Windrush features internationally acclaimed UK pianist Trevor Watkis, who has assembled an outstanding Anglo-American band to perform a retrospective of jazz trumpeter Dizzy Reece, who played with the best musicians in 1950’s London, as well as American jazz greats.

Electric Lady Big Band, a 16-piece ensemble featuring leading jazz improvisors including Laura Jurd, Yazz Ahmed, Nathaniel Facey and Iain Ballamy, tackle Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 album Electric Ladyland, featuring new arrangements by guitarist Denny Ilett. Pianist Shai Maestro is familiar to UK audiences through his work with bassist/composer Avishai Cohen. He appears with drummer Ziv Ravitz and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder – one of the most powerful and harmonious collaborations in jazz today. Pianist Sarah Tandy’s band includes some of the best voices on the London jazz scene. Other young stars include the sextet led by bassist Misha MullovAbbado and the quartet of saxman Leo Richardson.

The festival finale will be a tour de force of trios - Trio Trio Trio rolling seamlessly from one trio to another, one set to another and one style to another - from the soulful street vocals of Maggie Sommers to the raging urban horn of Alan Wilkinson. Facing Brave: Taking on the Acid Throwers

The UK has one of the highest levels of acid attacks in the world. On 7th May, as part of Leeds International Festival, Dr Almas Ahmed, from Bradford, will share the story of how she chose to confront the scourge of acid attacks and invented the world’s first acid-proof make-up. Curated by Thackray Medical Museum, the panel discussion will look at the people fighting against this aggressive crime. Joining Dr Ahmed will be Women’s Rights expert Danielle Cornish Spencer, who will address the international fight against violence towards women, and set out the global and political challenges of acid throwing; and Skin Scientist Dr Julie Thornton, who will talk about the challenge of skin burns, drawing on her experience of the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit at the Centre for Skin Sciences, founded following the 1985 Bradford City disaster.

The use of acid as an extreme form of power – usually male power – is being tackled by grassroots women’s rights organisations, led by survivors and helped by organisations like ActionAid. Together these organisations are making a difference to the laws and social norms that allow these attacks to happen. Protecting skin from burns is a challenge. The science behind it is as complex as the organ itself. The internationally-renowned Centre for Skin Sciences has been integrating basic science with applied research for over 30 years to understand what is needed to defend and repair our skin. Meanwood Fun Run 2019

Meanwood C of E School is hosting its first ever fun run at The Brownlee Centre, Bodington Playing Fields on Sunday 19th May, 1 – 2.45pm. Their idea was to organise an event that was fun and healthy and that the whole school and the wider community could take part in. The race is open to all in the local area, from age four upwards, and it’s not just for people with children at the school. You can walk, jog or run over a 2K or 5K distance. All participants will receive a special medal, with the option to get a limited-edition T-shirt too. Profits from the event and t-shirt sales will go to the Meanwood Primary PTA to benefit all the pupils at the school. This includes paying for transport for classes to go on academic trips, contributing towards the school minibus and purchasing much needed equipment and books for all of the school's year groups. New Treatment Path for Synthetic Cannabinoids Forward Leeds, the alcohol and drug service, has developed a new approach to the growing problem of Synthetic Cannabinoid Receptor Agonists, known as ‘Spice’. It recognised the need for new ways to help those using the drug that addressed users’ complex needs, especially those rough sleeping. The group developed a flexible, rapid response treatment using available resources and psycho-social treatment interventions, to offer a reduction and detoxification programme. This new approach can avoid the need for admission to hospital or a residential detox. “We have listened to those who use our services and those who work most closely with them in the community”, said Dr Hallam, Clinical Director of Forward Leeds. “They want effective help and we have developed a new way to support their needs. The approach is already supporting those wishing to stop their ‘Spice’ use and there is growing evidence that we are having a positive effect.”

Lee Wilson, head of Forward Leeds said: “The support of Leeds City Council, the Street Outreach Service and the new Safer Leeds Street Support team have been important. Their understanding of this population is vital. A number of individuals have successfully gone through the new reduction and detoxification programme. This should lessen the impact of drug related harm and lighten the load on local and NHS resources.” Forward Leeds along with colleagues from Humankind were invited to present this work at the Sixth International Conference on Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands on 8th/ 9th April 2019. The conference aimed to share knowledge and strengthen collaboration on NPS among multidisciplinary professionals. The conference is jointly organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, the World AntiDoping Agency, University of Hertfordshire, University of Maastricht.

Younger Life Sneha Donates Her Hair to Little Princess Trust Every year, Sneha Daga (12) received lots of presents for her birthday, but this year she wanted to do something different – she wanted to give something back, to give away something she loved. She had heard about the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free to children and young people up to the age of 24 who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses, and she recognised an opportunity.

“I have donated my hair”, said Sneha. “I cut 20 inches off and have sent it to the Little Princess Trust. Friends and family sponsored me, so I also managed to raise £800 for the Trust. I hope this small act will have a positive impact on a young person's life, make them smile and give them confidence to leave the house without fear of being judged or excluded.” The Trust relies solely on the efforts of enthusiastic community fundraisers. This was a lovely gesture by Sneha.

Nana, How Old is the Sea? Kate Edwards from Horsforth has a passion for writing. She has always loved writing articles and has dabbled in poetry from time to time. Recently, she self-published her first children's picture book – an idea which grew out of her love of the book ‘My Grandmother's Clock’ by Geraldine McCaughrean,which she loved reading to her youngest daughter. In it, Geraldine uses such beautiful language and imagery. Kate wanted to write something that would fire children's imaginations with cute and comforting characters. And so, ‘Nana, How Old is the Sea?’ was born! She even illustrated it herself – even though she had not drawn for years. “I love the sea and wanted to depict it as magical”, said Kate.

Rotary Club Technology Tournament Another Success The Rotary Clubs of Leeds recently held its Technology Tournament at the John Charles Centre. Twelve schools entered 38 teams (Approx.150 students) to compete and win prizes in different age groups – the tasks becoming increasingly more difficult with age. The design brief was to imagine that they were in a developing country that had experienced a disaster. With limited resources, they had to build a flashing advertising structure announcing a Rotary charity that would benefit the community. The choices were: Peace, Shelter Box, Aqua Box or the Polio Plus eradication programme.

The students had to work as a team, communicate, plan and explain their design in a written portfolio, then build the structure from the materials supplied. The final construction was then tested to see if it met the design brief. A team of judges was on hand to make suggestions to improve the models. “It's wonderful to see our Leeds school students tackle the project with such enthusiasm - there was a real buzz about the place”, said Lady Mayoress Cllr Pat Latty. “I hope it inspires them to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow. Leeds had world beating, innovative engineering companies

founded here and I hope that this competition inspires some of the students to place Leeds as a centre of engineering excellence once again.” Fay Best of WISE (Women in Engineering & Science) and three senior women managers from Siemens gave a presentation on the opportunities that exist for women in industry and the interesting and exciting, problem solving challenges they could face. The prize winners were: Foundation - Morley Academy; Intermediate - Grammar School at Leeds; Advanced - Abbey Grange Academy. The innovation prizes were won by Read School, Drax and Cockburn College of Arts. The competition is supported by Leeds University, Becketts University, West Yorkshire Society of Architects and Rotary Clubs and Councillors.
