Founded in 1999, Simon on the Streets has been working with vulnerable people affected by homelessness in Leeds, Bradford and Kirklees for 20 years. Since the charity was set up it has worked on an outreach basis, approaching rough sleepers on the streets and building relationships with them. It continues to support individuals who struggle to access other services and, by remaining independent of government funding, can offer support with no time limits. Rough sleeping has increased by 165 percent since 2010 and Simon on the Streets is stretching its service to meet demand. In Leeds, the charity is seeing a huge increase in EU migrants sleeping rough who have come to the UK on a promise of work and housing from illegal employers. Most cannot access benefits or housing support and the charity has struggled to find adequate support for them. This makes EU migrants particularly vulnerable to forced labour and human trafficking. Simon on the Streets is working with LATCH and Engage

Leeds to create supported housing for them to ensure they are safe and can access services.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

DOROTHY UNA RATCLIFFE (1887-1967) Writer, Poet, Traveller, Collector Dorothy Una Ratcliffe (known affectionately as D.U.R.) led a rich and colourful life. Glamorous, wealthy, a socialite who loved nature and the gypsy life, she published almost fifty books, travelled all over the world, nurtured her garden, adored Yorkshire and its traditions, was a prolific collector and the inspiration behind a magnificent legacy to Leeds.

Brought up in Sussex and Surrey, she was the eldest of the three daughters of George Benson Clough, a wealthy barrister originally from Scarborough: she called him the first Yorkshireman in her life. He was active in local politics, author of several books, and encouraged her early literary efforts. Dorothy and her sisters were educated locally, then sent to finishing schools in Germany and Paris to polish their accomplishments. In London in 1909, aged 22, she married Charles Frederick Ratcliffe, nephew and heir of the wealthy chemical tycoon Edward Allen Brotherton, later Lord Brotherton of Wakefield. He had no children, as his wife and baby had died in childbirth, and Charles, his sister’s son, was destined to inherit the business. The newly married couple settled in a house near Edward Brotherton’s home at Roundhay Hall (now the Spire Hospital), and in later years moved there themselves. Dorothy and Edward Brotherton got on famously – she filled the place of daughter and hostess in his busy social and political life. In 1913, when he became Lord Mayor of Leeds, he chose her as his Lady Mayoress. Her striking appearance caused a stir – ‘a most picturesque figure’, gushed the papers, ‘tall and slim, in champagne coloured satin… with a huge stole and muff of snow leopard’. But their year in office was darkened by the outbreak of war. Dorothy supported him in raising and equipping, at his own expense, the volunteer ‘Leeds Pals’, and with her fluent

French helped welcome Belgian refugees. He clearly had a great affection for her, and they shared a passion for literature and fine books. Over the next years he financed her publication of a literary magazine, ‘The Microcosm’, with articles by writers like Tolkien and Chesterton, and she helped him build up a stunning library of rare and precious books and manuscripts, which was later bequeathed to Leeds University ‘in trust for the Nation’, and housed in the Brotherton Library which he had so munificently endowed. From her early years she had loved writing, especially poetry and drama. She fell in love with the Yorkshire Dales, their landscape, dialect and customs, and in 1918 published her first volume of lyrical, romantic Dales ballads, ‘The Dales of Arcady’. From then on, year after year, she published poems, plays, memoirs, based on Dales life, some in local dialect and some specially for children (sadly she could have none of her own). Her other passion was for the Romany people and their culture, which she loved to explore and write about – she was sure she had gypsy blood. It’s easy now to judge her work as over-

sentimental, a fanciful, romanticised version of country and gypsy life, but she felt she was writing in the old ballad tradition, which she often gave lectures on. Her work was widelyread (often featured in ‘The Dalesman’) and enjoyed for its idealised imagery and its dialect humour. Her marriage to Charles Ratcliffe (who later took the name of Brotherton – and was the benefactor of the LGI’s Brotherton wing) proved deeply unhappy, but to avoid scandal they divorced only after Lord Brotherton’s death in 1930. He left her a generous inheritance of her own and she began a new life. In 1932 she married Noel MacGrigor Phillips and together they travelled the world, often in their caravan or yacht. Their home was Temple Sowerby Manor, near Penrith; a few years after her husband’s sudden death in 1942 she gave the house and her beloved garden (Acorn Bank) to the National Trust. She married a third time, a long-term friend called Arthur Vowles, and they lived in Edinburgh until his death, when she moved to North Berwick. She died aged 80, writing, always under the same name, almost to the end.

She was an active campaigner for the Yorkshire Dialect and Gypsy Lore societies, and remained an untiring friend to the Brotherton Library, to which she gave her outstanding collection of Romany material. The Leeds Museum has her fine collection of fans and miniatures, and (poignantly) baby bonnets – and a powerful bronze bust. Meanwhile her many books, once so popular, moulder on library shelves, though some of her lyrical poems have been set to music (by Artisan Harmony). Her own words can serve as an epitaph: ‘Here lies a lover of rain and sun,/ Loving, and loved by everyone; /Who left these beautiful dales to find /The dales where the heavenly rivers wind.’

Since opening, virtually every table - both inside and out – has been occupied pretty much every single day. Simcha Gallery in the Corn Exchange is a wonderful craft gallery and working studio, showcasing the work of jewellery designer Stephen Roper and his mother Anne Roper, an artist and textile designer. Inspired by nature, the beauty of time-worn surfaces and ancient artefacts, Stephen’s silver and gold jewellery explores organic textures and forms through traditional metalworking techniques and is influenced by the flowing sinuous lines of Art Nouveau. He has created several design collections of jewellery, and undertakes numerous commissions, including designs upcycled and refashioned from family heirlooms.

Shetland wool wraps and berets, art cards, mixed media artworks and jewellery, are all made in the gallery studio by Anne, who loves multi-layered colours and textures, combining metallic threads, paint, embroidery, felt and crochet. A Magical Christmas Experience at Lotherton

Jonathan Hooper is an artist living in Headingley. For ten years he has been making his colourful and semi-abstract paintings of buildings and parks in Leeds and the suburbs of Hyde Park, Kirkstall, Headingley, Meanwood and West Park.



It’s after-hours, the doors are closed and it’s the moment when Harewood House really comes alive. The statues are singing, the paintings are gossiping and there’s hustle and bustle both above and below stairs, with the anticipation of guests in the run up to Christmas. For six weeks from Saturday 23rd November Yorkshire’s most exciting country house presents its interpretation of Christmas. Created by British artistic duo, Davy and Kristin McGuire from Studio McGuire, ‘A Night at the Mansion’ presents workshops, festive-themed music, events, Christmas market weekends, cookery demonstrations and an encounter with Father and Mrs Christmas. Just open the doors, look under the stairs, listen out for the chatter and follow the music!

Harewood’s festive makeover will bring warmth and cheer to you and your friends. Two weekends, (7th/ 8th & 14th/ 15th December) will be dedicated to Christmas markets, with music and merriment and, across the whole season, you can catch seasonal cookery demonstrations in the kitchen. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic tale ‘The Little Prince’ is given a fresh and witty adaptation through Luca Silvestrini’s distinctive blend of dance, humour and music on Saturday 23rd (1.30 & 5.30pm) and Sunday 24th November (1.30pm) at the Riley Theatre, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Chapeltown Road, LS7 4BH. One of the world’s most translated stories, the Little Prince journeys from his tiny asteroid to planet Earth, meeting a stranded pilot, a greedy businessman who counts the stars, a sly snake and a mysterious fox. Sharon was one of the first female dancers invited to join the all-male Phoenix Dance Company and she toured with the ensemble for eight years. She left to pursue other avenues, including lecturing at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, before joining Phoenix Dance Theatre as Rehearsal & Tour Director, becoming Artistic Director in 2009. She is the longest standing Artistic Director of the Company and has seen the organisation through monumental growth.

Alan Davie & David Hockney: Early Works at The Hepworth Wakefield

The Hepworth Wakefield currently presents a major exhibition of early works by Alan Davie (1920 – 2014) and David Hockney, exploring creative convergences between these two major post-war British painters, spanning the years 1948 to 1965.

Alan Davie held his first retrospective exhibition at the former Wakefield Art Gallery in 1958. A young David Hockney, recently graduated from Bradford College of Art, visited the exhibition and heard Davie talk about his work. This encounter had a pivotal influence on his development, offering early exposure to large-scale, colourful, abstract painting. Davie’s 1958 retrospective included the three-metre-long ‘Creation of Man’ (1957), which is on show for the first time in decades.

Shortly after Hockney’s encounter with Davie he took up a place at the Royal College of Art, where he discarded realist figurative painting in favour of colourful, gestural works that combined abstraction with poetic text and symbolism. The exhibition brings together around 45 paintings, collages and drawings by Davie and Hockney, revealing shared preoccupations with passion, love, sex and poetry as their work oscillated between figuration and abstraction. Self-portraits and photographs show the development of each artist’s public persona, as contemporary art became a central part of popular culture.

Both artists cultivated distinctive looks, exploring notions of masculinity and identity. Themes of poetry, love and eroticism explored by both artists are examined through painting, including Hockney’s celebrated ‘We Two Boys Together Clinging’ (1961) and Davie’s ‘Glory’ (1957). The exhibition also explores work from the 1960s when both artists combined interests in non-western culture with contemporary influences, including American abstract painting and advertising, creating bold, graphic works such as Davie’s ‘Cross for the White Birds’ and Hockney’s ‘Arizona’. This exhibition runs until 19th January 2020. Alongside will be the first solo show of the exciting young American painter, Christina Quarles.

Wizard of Oz Will Thrill Christmas Audiences at Leeds Playhouse Leeds Playhouse’s new production of ‘The Wizard of OZ’ – the first Christmas show back in the newly transformed theatre – will transport audiences to the Emerald City from 20th November to 25th January 2020.

Directed by Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director James Brining, this timeless folk tale has its origins in the America of the mid 1930s. It was a spartan existence, with Dorothy’s Aunt Em and Uncle Henry living in just one room. But, through Dorothy it becomes a story of adventure and friendship, change, transformation and community. It is a fresh story with a deeper meaning that is still relevant today. This new production is designed by Simon Higlett, who also designed ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ for Leeds Playhouse. Whilst honouring the 1939 film, this is a magical theatrical production that makes full use of dramatic projections, wonderful puppets, lighting and music. Faced with such a challenge, both James and Simon

went back to the original book and noted how people and things from Dorothy’s Kansas life all reappeared in Oz – here a funnel in the wallpaper becomes Tin Man’s hat; filament in a bulb becomes the Good Witch; there’s a lion on the bed and monkeys on a shelf. The transformations are fascinating to watch. Agatha Meehan (12), from York, and Lucy Sherman (14) from Leeds, share the role or Dorothy, accompanied along the yellow brick road by Eleanor Sutton as Scarecrow, Sam Harrison as Tin Man, and Marcus Ayton as Lion. Polly Lister will terrify audiences as the Wicked Witch, whilst Angela Wynter will be sprinkling the stage with magic fairy dust as Glinda. The Wizard/Professor will be played by Graham Hoadly, with Phil Cole as Uncle Henry, and Harrison Clark as Nikko. Also in the cast are Haylee Ann, Ailsa Dalling, Russell Dickson, Erin Hair, Paul Hutton, Bethany Linsdell, Anna McGarahan, Esme Sears, Joshua Talbot and Joseph Claus. Author Donates Profits to Basis Sex Work Project

Dr Kate Lister, an English lecturer at Leeds Trinity University, publishes her first book ‘A Curious History of Sex’ in February 2020 and intends to donate the proceeds to Basis Yorkshire, an organisation that supports female and transgender sex workers and young people experiencing sexual exploitation in Leeds.

The book is based on her research project ‘Whores of Yore’, which she set up in 2015 to encourage conversation on the history of sexuality, the plight of modern sex workers and wider social issues. It explores a broad range of subjects including safe-sex, mythical historical figures, etymology of sex-related words, female genital mutilation and the biology of sex. The Twitter account ’Whores of Yore’ attracted over 300,000 followers, inspiring the topics featured in her book. “I had so much fun writing this book”, she said. “But, by far the best thing about doing it is being able to raise money for a charity that has supported vulnerable women for over thirty years.” “With the launch of the new Sexuality and Ethics module at Leeds Trinity University, this area of research forms part of a wider social issue”, said Professor Ray Lloyd, Deputy Vice-

Childline in Leeds is looking for new volunteers to cover vital night shifts at the its Albion Street base. For many young people, ChildLine is the only place they can turn to for help or advice at night – it’s a time when the call centre is needed most.

Leeds Childline volunteer counsellors are there for them. Volunteers deliver online only sessions about any number of issues from sexual abuse and bullying to schoolwork pressures. More and more children and teenagers now prefer to communicate via 1-2-1 chat. Night shifts only last three and a half hours, and can start from 9pm, finishing no later than 2am. The ideal volunteer will have the time and availability between these hours on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

You will be joining a friendly team and working at Childline can be incredibly rewarding – you will get the chance to support vulnerable young people and all volunteers receive ongoing training, with full support available on shifts. Since October 1997, Childline volunteers and staff in Leeds have provided a staggering 224,415 counselling sessions to young people across the UK. During 2018/19 the base provided 8,581 counselling sessions on subjects including friendship issues, self-harm, suicide and sexual abuse. LeedsMencap Seeks Support to Bring Cinema to Children with

Learning Disabilities Leeds Mencap supports children with learning disabilities and their families. For many of them a family trip to the cinema is impossible. Screenings can be too dark and too noisy and parents say they have felt unwelcome in public with their child who has a learning disability.

To combat this, Leeds Mencap is appealing for financial support to put on a special, relaxed screening of ‘Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon’ this November. Lights will be adjusted, sound lowered, and everyone will be free to move around and make noise without feeling uncomfortable.

“A normal cinema screening can be difficult for children like our two boys”, said Kate. “It can be either overwhelming or distracting. Oliver doesn't like loud noises and Joshua's not keen on the dark. They struggle with sitting still and want to get up and move around. The Leeds Mencap screening would be perfect for them.”

This event would give families like The Cravens the chance to enjoy a rare trip to the cinema together. All three of Kate

Age Proud Leeds – A New Campaign Against Ageism Ageism is the most commonly experienced form of prejudice and discrimination in the UK and across Europe. Half of people aged over 55 in the UK say that they have been discriminated against unfairly because of their age and 24% of millennials (18-34) think ‘older people can never be thought of as attractive’. Time to Shine, in partnership with Age Friendly Leeds, Leeds City Council and the NHS in Leeds, recently launched a new campaign – Age Proud Leeds - to raise awareness of ageism and change negative attitudes about ageing.

Discussing topics such as caring for your elderly parents, grief and growing older, can be difficult to explore at the best of times but Westward Care is addressing this head on by sponsoring a trilogy of plays across Leeds in October / November. The plays have all been written by Brian Daniels, an award-winning playwright who is frequently commissioned to write about difficult topics – bringing them to life through performance. Westward Care is one of the leading health and social care providers for older people in Leeds. It owns and manages Southlands Retirement Apartments in Roundhay, Headingley Hall Care Home and Retirement Apartments and Pennington Court Care Home in Beeston – the only care home for older people in Leeds rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. Furniture Makers Celebrate Fifth Anniversary This month, Coleman & Edwards furniture makers are celebrating five years of creating original furniture for customers around Leeds and beyond.

Jake Coleman & Gareth Edwards both studied at Leeds Art University, where they first conceived the idea of going into business together to design beautiful wood furniture and, since setting up in 2014, they have worked on projects across the country. “Here in Leeds we recently created a beautiful pine kitchen from reclaimed timber”, said Jake. “The wood was originally part of an 18th century church and initially

looked very sad and weathered - but we managed to restore it and create a really beautiful kitchen with wood that just oozes history.” Coleman & Edwards started off producing occasional pieces, but word about their work soon spread and their work has expanded into dining tables, entire kitchens, and fitted bedroom furniture, all made from a range of reclaimed and exotic woods. They are also very excited about developing collaborations with other Leeds artists. Leeds to Become UK’s First Women Friendly City Women’s Lives Leeds recently confirmed the upcoming launch of Women Friendly Leeds. A consortium of 11 women’s and girls’ organisations in Leeds successfully bid for funding from the Comic Relief ‘Power Up’ Initiative. The application was one of 700 worldwide bids, of which only seven in the UK were successful. The aim of Women’s Lives Leeds is to work towards making Leeds the UK’s first Women Friendly City. The concept was first raised by the Leeds Women’s and Girls’ Hubs two years ago. It will focus on making Leeds a city where the rights of women are protected and promoted and decisions are made with the impact on women taken into consideration. Suggested key areas which would contribute to the overall objective of

making Leeds a city where women are the happiest and healthiest they can be are: safety, voice, influence and participation, employment / economic development, education, health and wellbeing. The United Nations already have a Women Friendly City initiative, which defines a WFC as a city where women can access: • health, education and social services • employment opportunities • high quality, comprehensive services (transportation, accommodation and security) • mechanisms that guarantee their rights if they are subjected to violence. A city where: • Local governments take into account women’s issues and perspectives in planning and decision-making processes.

• Women are supported and encouraged to participate in all areas of urban life on an equal basis. Homeshare carries out background checks on all sharers, including police and credit checks and requires references. They do a thorough assessment and carefully match householders with the right sharer. One lady wanted a Spanish speaker so they could speak Spanish together. Some have specified a sharer of the same religion. Family members often contact Homeshare to find their parents a sharer because they worry about them being on their own. The sharer provides 10 hours of support a week and helps with tasks such as cleaning, gardening and shopping. Homeshare brings people together who have a lot to offer and the benefits are mutual. Connecting Leeds – Leeds City Centre Changes The first stage of the planned transformation of the city centre is underway. A lot of the changes relate to bus and rail services, in a drive to reduce delays to buses, provide easier connection between bus and rail services, and safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists.

I enjoy listening to her play the flute. She likes cooking and makes lovely cakes. I get on well with younger people and I didn’t want to live on my own, I have a lot of life experiences and knowledge to share. I enjoy spending time with Holly and going to cafes together.” Holly says: "Margaret is very friendly, she’s lived a very interesting life, and she’s great to talk to! I really like living with her & helping her when she needs it." Homeshare is not just for older people some of our householders are younger and may have additional needs like a physical disability.

Improvements to bus stop waiting facilities are also planned. Five main areas of the city centre will be upgraded to make them more attractive, with wider footways, pedestrianised squares, and more greenery. These areas are The Corn Exchange, New Briggate, Victoria Gardens and Cookridge Street, The Headrow at Dortmund Square, and Vicar Lane above The Headrow. Other areas (Woodhouse Lane, Blenheim Terrace, Albion Street and Lower Briggate) will restrict part of the roadway to buses only, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, with traffic restrictions, removal of taxi ranks, improved pedestrian crossings and wider footways. Within the city centre as a whole there will be better seating, useful maps and real-time information displays. The stops will be better positioned for passengers whilst still allowing enough space for pedestrians. Meanwood’s Reverse Advent Calendar Returns Meanwood Valley Partnership is running its Reverse Advent Calendar scheme again this year, to show that Christmas is not just about presents, parties and John Lewis adverts, but a chance to help Meanwood families in need.

“It’s a really simple concept”, said Organiser Chris Swales. “Instead of opening a traditional advent calendar window, you stick a coin on our Reverse Advent Calendar each day of the advent period starting on 1st December. As soon as possible after Christmas, completed calendars can be dropped off at one of the collection points. Community worker Maureen Lillywhite will convert the coins into supermarket food vouchers and distribute these to families. “Not only is this something fun for the whole family to do together, it teaches

kids the importance of helping others less fortunate than themselves and they can get involved by decorating calendars designed especially for children.” Last year over 150 families took part in the scheme which helped feed other local families well into March. Reverse Advent Calendars will be available free at the Meanwood Christmas Light Switch-On on 15th November and can be picked up at the Myrtle Tavern, Junction Bar and Cafe, Tandem Cafe, The Hungry Bear, and the Cafe Bar in Meanwood Park, as well as the Holy Trinity Community Cafe on Wednesday Lunchtime, and Stainbeck Church Community Cafe on Thursday lunchtimes.

The Brambling, a close relative of the Chaffinch, is one of the loveliest of our small Winter visitors. It is a similar size and shape to the Chaffinch, but even in winter plumage its coloration is very different. The male has a deep orange breast, with mottled grey-brown upperparts and a white rump. The female has a paler, more greyish head, and a paler orange breast. Were you lucky enough to see it on its breeding grounds in the far north of Europe, the male would then be even more striking with a jet black head and back. These birds arrive from mid-September to spend the Winter here, and depart in March to breed in Scandinavia. Their main food in Winter is beech mast – the nuts of the beech tree – and the numbers wintering in the UK are dependant on the quantity of this food available, which can vary greatly from year to year. They can be found in woodland, farmland, parks and sometimes come into well-stocked gardens. In

Horsforth takes Gold….Again! Horsforth in Bloom is celebrating yet another Gold Award as a result of entering the Yorkshire in Bloom competition. This is the third time they have achieved the award in as many years and are rightly proud to have been judged ‘Best in Town’. The award ceremony was hosted by Dame Elizabeth Susan Cunliffe-Lister, Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding, at a luncheon at York Racecourse on 10th September and she presented the prestigious awards ranging from Silver, Silver Gilt and Gold to recipients from across Yorkshire. Horsforth in Bloom is a relatively small group of volunteers that meets every Wednesday afternoon to take part in various horticultural activities. They are involved with work at twenty-six different sites throughout the town, as well as engagement with schools, social groups such as ‘Live at Home’ and Scouting organisations.

However, it seems that even gardeners are guilty of contributing to the problems of the planet, and many people are talking about how they can garden in a more environmentally friendly way. Here are a few ideas to help us to be greener gardeners. New Plants in Winter

The bare root season is here! Trees, shrubs and certain plants can be bought in a dormant state from nurseries and garden centres and planted into the ground ready to burst into life in Spring. This is a perfect way to avoid buying plants in plastic pots, and it also makes the job of planting easier, especially for large plants that are not nearly as heavy to handle when bought as bare root stock.

If you didn’t add a layer of well-rotted garden compost or manure to your beds last month, you can do it now. It’s great for the garden, but often comes in thick plastic sacks. Many stables will gladly give away manure if you are able to collect it yourself. Re-using old compost bags is an excellent way to do this without buying any new plastic. Producing your own garden compost is another great way to avoid packaging, it’s really not that difficult and works best if you can find a little space for two compost bins together – one to be filled up and the other for taking the finished compost from. I find the open wooden ones work best, and they only cost around £40 each to buy. Grow Your Own

The flavour of fruit and veg that you’ve grown yourself is really hard to beat. Not to mention the feeling of pride and the money you can save. Every few weeks another superhero movie hits the screen — or at least that’s how it feels. As a forced course in the modern cinematic menu, DC Comics faces off Marvel in a relentless market share struggle, reheating an endless supply of rebooted and revived concepts. Thankfully, this month’s 'Joker' has bucked the trend and will pleasantly surprise those wearied by the usual typhoon of nauseating computer generated action. That’s because the latest interpretation of Batman’s clowning adversary is a downbeat, low-fi and evenly-paced character study which has more in common with 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest' than the fantastical escapades of Captain Marvel or Aquaman. Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, the chap behind the cheesy if able 'Hangover' comedy franchise, 'Joker' is an inspired origination story which explores the birth of an alterego from the shell of a tormented and neglected man. It’s as brilliant as it is simple. 1981: Gotham City is at breaking point with soaring poverty and spiralling crime. On the fringe is Arthur Fleck, a struggling Clown for Hire who cares for his mother in their tiny downtown flat. Following welfare cutbacks, Fleck is denied treatment for his complex mental health needs, which manifests itself as a pathological laughing disorder. When he becomes the victim of a brutal attack, his desperate counterstrike gives rise to a toxic new persona, and phenomenon, which rapidly mobilises an entire city… Following in the footsteps of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, a rakethin Joaquin Phoenix assumes the role of the Joker and matches, if not exceeds, their iconic performances, but in a more studied and revealing way. This is, in part, thanks to a script with a character-driven focus which isn’t really about the birth of the Joker, but rather an appraisal of the demise of Arthur Fleck, himself a symbol of decay and desertion in modern society.

Phoenix’s performance as the poor and pitiful Fleck is bound to draw Oscar attention, as he creates small yet pointed details to unpack a gradual decline through micro expression and almost balletic movement. It’s a painful study of sickness, captured up close through lingering cinematography which documents him dancing alone and fantasising on companionship, to being reborn as a gun-toting, facepainted vigilante with graphic, bloody consequences. Phoenix gives his very being to the role; slimming down several stones to appear hunched, rakish and abused. Clothes hang off him like rags, and his body appears twisted in constant torment. Whilst his Joker doesn’t have a traditional sense of humour – he’s totally out of step with convention - he remains funny in a toe-curlingly offbeat way. His childlike sadness also demands sympathy, yet his rampant descent into fantasy gives the film an uneasy and volatile inevitability. In supporting roles, Frances Conroy hands over a compelling performance as Fleck’s withering mother, which borrows more than a touch of the Norman Bates dynamic in its ambiguity. And if there was any question of the film’s dedication to 'Taxi Driver', you can’t miss Robert De Niro in a fantastic turn as a US TV show host. But it’s arguably the diseased and greasy Gotham City which plays the most immersive role. The landscape is inspired by New York at its recessionriddled worst, amplified with a rocking,

defiant period soundtrack which underscores the Joker’s grand entrance with a provocative and glorified swagger. Shot in an almost grindhouse style in grimy backstreets and dimly-lit subways, it reads like a love letter to Martin Scorsese’s mean-spirited New York and feels all the more tactile for it. 'Joker' is a sobering and refreshingly low-key character piece that follows you home. Far from the escapist adventure we’ve come to expect from the DC movie machine, this haunting tale makes a clear statement about a rotting social system and demonstrates those consequences in a distressing and believable climax. Monsters have to come from somewhere, and as this intense story reminds us, many of them are of our own making. A revealing, rewarding and darkly comic film with more than a few cards up its sleeve.

Leeds Queer Film Festival Wins National Award Leeds Queer Film Festival (LQFF), organised by seven dedicated volunteers, won the Engholm Prize for Community Cinema of the Year at the 50th Cinema for All awards, which recognise the work of community cinemas across the UK. Awarded ‘to the film society, or community cinema that has demonstrated excellence and innovation in all areas of operation’, LQFF was chosen for its resilience and determination in a very challenging year. The Festival was to open on 21st March at Live Art Bistro. On 20th March LQFF were informed that the venue had to close with immediate effect. Eight months of planning looked like it was

going down the drain. However, they were determined to go ahead at a future date - they just needed a venue. The true spirit of the LGBTQ+ and film communities of Leeds shone through. Hyde Park Picture House offered its cinema for a whole weekend in June, Leeds International Film Festival offered to cancel their weekend screening event to give LQFF its venue, The Tetley art gallery offered rooms, East St Arts helped with the search, and Woodhouse Community Centre also offered space.

After a successful crowdfunder, LQFF booked new dates in May at Woodhouse Community Centre and the revived festival was well supported by the LGBTQ+ community and allies. After such a tough year, this community festival truly deserved the Engholm Prize. Inspired and revitalised by its victory, LQFF is busy planning for its next festival in April 2020. Alex Fischer has always wanted to help people overcome injustices. This led to a career as an international attorney, specialising in litigation. Sound&Vision ‘Dispatches on the Red Dress’ at All Hallows

Fiddle player, banjoist and songwriter Rowan Rheingans is widely regarded as one of the foremost innovators in folk music today and you can catch her at All Hallows Church, Regent Terrace, Hyde Park LS6 1NP on Saturday 9th November. Best known for her work with bands Lady Maisery and Songs of Separation, Rowan has won two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and is a six-times nominee. Her duo The Rheingans Sisters are currently nominees in the ‘Best Duo/Group’ category at the 2019 Awards. Rowan premiered her new solo show ‘Dispatches on the Red Dress’ at the Edinburgh Fringe and is now taking this deeply personal one-woman show on national tour. It tells the story of Rowan's German grandmother's youth in 1940's Germany, weaving immersive storytelling around ten new songs.

With the rise of racism in our communities and a new nationalistic fervour gaining pace across Europe, ‘Dispatches on the Red Dress’ is a highly resonant and much needed historic provocation for our current political and social climate. Slowly revealing what is at once a warm family story and a troubling elegy on the modern human condition, Rowan explores how hope for the future may be found in the very darkest pockets of our history… As well as being a heartfelt yet unflinching anti-war and antifascist statement, the show is an uplifting celebration of small acts of every-day resistance, speaking directly to the human capabilities of transformation and change. Nigel Slee Wins Sustainable Travel Competition at Jazz Conference Jazz North's Creative Director Nigel Slee likes travelling via a folding bike and trains. When Corrado Beldi of NovaraJazz, issued a challenge to the members of the Europe Jazz Network to travel to the European Jazz Conference in Italy by sustainable travel, Nigel couldn’t wait. He won the competition for travelling the furthest – 1,925km from Leeds to Novara, Italy - catching four trains that crossed four countries and cycling across five

European cities, all in 20 hours. He was presented with a custom folding bike embossed with the NovaraJazz logo at the final session of the European Jazz Conference. “Jazz North has a strong commitment to sustainable travel”, said Nigel. “Every year we increase our use of public transport and bikes to attend meetings and events across the north of England. As members of Julie’s Bicycle it is built into the fabric of the organisation. So, when I heard about the NovaraJazz competition, I couldn’t wait to take part. The whole experience was brilliant and travelling by

The Leeds Gathering 2019 The Leeds Gathering – a celebration of Irish Arts and music - kicks off on 23rd November and runs until 2nd December. The 0-19 Public Health Integrated Nursing Service was set up to help every child in Leeds get off to the best start and to support them as they grow – which often means offering information and peer support to parents and carers.

A new group to support people with tinnitus is being formed in Leeds. The first meeting will be held on Friday 8th November, 2 – 3.30pm in the John Lewis Leeds Community Hub (fourth floor in the store) in Victoria Gate. Tinnitus is defined as the experience of sounds with no external source, most commonly ringing or buzzing, but sometimes experienced as whooshing, clicking or even music. Around one in eight adults experience persistent tinnitus. Many aren't troubled by the sounds they hear, but for around 10%, the condition has a significant impact on their quality of life, and is often linked to stress, anxiety or sometimes depression. The group is being organised by volunteers Frank Rosenhead, Doug Whiteley and Janet Cox, who became interested in setting it up following BTA Tinnitus Information Sessions in the city.

"Being among people who have tinnitus, listening to their experiences and how they manage it, can be a tremendous help”, said Colette Bunker, BTA Volunteer and Support Group Manager. “I witness this regularly when attending group meetings. It’s amazing seeing the difference it makes to people, especially those who have been recently diagnosed. "Tinnitus can be an isolating condition, with friends and family struggling to understand how it feels to adapt to the presence of persistent noises. Some people choose to bring a partner or family member to the meetings, which can often help both parties understand more about the condition and the experiences or behaviours it can bring." The 0-19 service is there to help and it provided valuable support to our family.” The 0-19 Public Health Integrated Nursing Service offers support and information to help families with a variety of common and more specialist topics – anything from bed wetting to emotional difficulties, oral health and bereavement. New NHS Gambling Addiction Service A new NHS Northern Gambling Service, offering treatment and support to the thousands of adults struggling with gambling addiction across the North of England, recently launched in Leeds. About 340,000 people around the UK have a gambling problem, with another two million at risk of developing one. However, fewer than 3% of those affected currently receive any treatment or support. Funded jointly by NHS England and GambleAware, this new service, run by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT), is the first of its kind outside London. Further bases in Manchester and Sunderland are set to open in 2020.

The service will provide care for those with severe addictions, treatment and support for people with additional and complex mental health conditions or impaired social functioning, and for those who may present with more risk - such as a risk of suicide. People will get support through psychological therapies, addiction treatment programmes, mental health treatment, family therapy, and peer support from those whose lives have been adversely affected by gambling. It can also offer support to family members and carers. In Leeds, LYPFT is working with the charity GamCare. This is an enhanced service providing additional prevention, education and treatment for gamblingrelated harm for local residents. Rotary Young Chefs Through to Next Round

The Rotary Club of Aireborough recently held its heat for the National Young Chef competition at Guiseley School.

Featherbank Primary School in Horsforth is enjoying a new ‘Forest Classroom’ just 50 meters from the school gates. Created by Leeds & Yorkshire Housing Association (LYHA), in partnership with the school and the Conservation Volunteers, the overgrown, wooded area next to a LYHA development has been turned into a community garden with an outdoor classroom. It will be called ‘Featherbank Forest’ (as named and voted on by the children) and will be used to deliver learning for all pupils in a natural, outdoor setting. “We created the classroom with logs covered by a tarpaulin (so it can be used in all weathers), with a fire pit, structures to make dens, a see-saw, climbing frame and wooden xylophone, all of which embrace the Outdoor Learning ethos”, said Joanna Chambers, LYHA’s Head

of Home & Growth. “We also installed railings around the site to ensure it is secure. It has been a really exciting project and we are delighted that it will benefit both the school and local families.” “It’s fantastic to have somewhere we can investigate science and deliver all aspects of the curriculum in a safe, outside space, near the school”, said Lorraine Scudder, Headteacher at Featherbank. “Our teachers and governing body are passionate about encouraging the use of outdoor spaces and developing links with the surrounding community. We are sure that it will enrich the children’s learning and add to their enjoyment of their time in school.”

The competition required entrants to cook a three-course meal for two with a budget of £20 (paid by the Club) and within a time limit of two hours. Marks were awarded for planning, healthy choices, correct use of equipment, hygiene and neatness, and range of skills, as well as presentation and taste. Dishes ranged from Smoked Mackerel Pâté to Spinach and Paneer Rolls as starters, Hunters’ Chicken to Cod and Chickpea Curry for main courses, and White Chocolate and Ginger Cheesecake to Plum Fool as desserts. The judges, Rotarians Brian Whitham and John Kitching, had a difficult task deciding the winners. After much debate, it was decided that Romany Branston of Guiseley School and Alfie Stead of Benton Park School would be invited to represent the Club in the next round at the Printworks, Leeds, on 16th November, where they hope to gain a place in the District Final at Betty’s Cookery School in Harrogate in the New Year.
