But it’s all happening in Leeds – We have the wonderful Light Night coming up in the city centre; Leeds/Dortmund 50 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the twinning of Leeds and Dortmund; Leeds Thoresby Society holds another series of history lectures; the Goth City Festival returns for a fourth year; and Imam Qari Asim is recognised by the Indonesian Government for his efforts to build bridges between communities.

The homeless charity Simon on the Streets is celebrating its twentieth anniversary by unveiling 12 blue plaques in Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield, highlighting some of the cases it has worked with over the last twenty years. Created by Fun Agency, the plaques will be placed at street level to show where the homeless person may have slept or spent time. The plaques give descriptions of each individual, giving people an insight into the personality and life of those on the streets. The plaques will also highlight cases where people have been able to leave their life on the streets through support from Simon on the Streets and other agencies. “We want to acknowledge the huge steps that people we have supported have made to achieve their own goals and aspirations

as well as those that are still struggling with addictions and pressures of everyday life”, said Eric Richardson, CEO of Simon on the Streets. “Homelessness has risen dramatically over the last 20 years and we want to ensure that this remains in the public’s eye as it’s very easy to ignore people on the streets.”

All 12 plaques are inspired by real life case studies, although names have been changed. The charity is encouraging people to search for the plaques in an online ‘scavenger hunt’, posting photos of the plaques on social media using the hashtag #Simononthestreets to help raise awareness. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford ALFRED AUSTIN (1835-1913) Poet, Political Journalist and Critic Leeds can boast only one poet laureate – the nation’s official poet – but in fact nobody boasts about him at all. He’s more of a shameful secret. Alfred Austin, born and brought up in Leeds, was appointed poet laureate in 1896, after four years of tussle and argument about a worthy successor to the revered Lord Tennyson and William Wordsworth. His appointment provoked a flood of criticism and insult which left his reputation in tatters and buried him for years. Search the poetry anthologies, look for a blue plaque on his birthplace: nothing. Complacent and egotistical, he lacked personal appeal, but some of his writing has charm and grace, reflecting his genuine, romantic love of English gardens and nature. Is it time to dig him up?

He was born in 1835, third of the six children of Joseph Austin, a prosperous Leeds wool merchant and magistrate, who had just had a splendid new house built on Headingley Hill ‘Ashwood’, off North Hill Road, its gothic arched windows and tall chimneys still a feature. In later memories Alfred recalled the open fields separating it from Woodhouse Moor, where cows grazed and he used to exercise his pony – an idyllic semi-rural childhood. Poetry, especially Byron, was an early passion. His father was Catholic, so after a day school in Headingley he was sent off to the Catholic Stoneyhurst College and then to St. Mary’s, Oscott, near Birmingham, where he studied for a degree of London University, the only degree open to non-Anglicans. With vague thoughts about a profession, he entered legal chambers in London and was called to the Bar in 1857. But he was a half-hearted lawyer – he really wanted to write, and had already published a book of poetry, funded by his uncle. It sold 17 copies!

spent a long period in Italy, which he grew to love. On his return to England he continued writing, published two novels, and married the daughter of an Irish landowner, Hester Homan-Mulock. They enjoyed a year-long honeymoon in his beloved Italy, embroiled then in political turmoil.

In 1860 he inherited money from this uncle, the distinguished railway engineer Joseph Locke, which freed him to write and travel. He published two books of satirical poetry, praised for their learning and elegance, and

As their correspondent he travelled to Rome in 1869 to cover the first Vatican Council and then in 1870 was at the Siege of Paris. He stood for parliament twice as a Conservative, for Taunton in 1865 and Dewsbury in 1880, egged on by Disraeli, but lost. So he focussed on political journalism, founding and editing the National Review, a platform for the Tory party. He was a close friend of Lord Salisbury, and totally in tune with his anti-reform policies.

They spent the rest of their lives there creating their perfect garden, the inspiration for his most popular work: ‘The Garden that I Love’ (1894), and its sequels ‘In Veronica’s Garden’ and ‘Lamia’s Winter Quarters’, all running to many editions – idylls in prose, interspersed with poems and whimsical conversations on nature and life. Further volumes of lyrical poetry, poetic criticism (he harshly dismissed old favourites like Tennyson!), satires and dramas, and finally an autobiography flowed from his pen – over 40 books in all. In 1896, after other candidates had been rejected or had refused, he was appointed Poet Laureate, on Lord Salisbury’s recommendation as Prime Minister. The press had a field day mocking his work, picking on various dud lines particularly in his later ‘official’ odes, and even poking fun at his short stature (about five feet). But he was impervious: confident, sure of his own worth and the rightness of his views on Queen, country, empire, and literature. He revisited Leeds in 1904 to receive an honorary degree from the newly created University and gave a characteristic lecture on the ‘progressive

lunacy’ of giving poor children free meals in schools. He died in 1913, on the brink of the great upheaval of the First World War. He was included in a famous Anthology of Bad Verse, but the kind view is that at his best he was ‘a true but not a great poet’ – you can taste his work yourself now on the internet.

Life&Style Graduate Receives Duke of York Social Enterprise Award

Jake Goodwin, a Leeds Trinity graduate whose social enterprise provides employment for people with learning disabilities and autism, recently received a Duke of York Social Enterprise Award.

Jake established Building Futures as a Community Interest Company last year. It provides a sustainable route into employment and the opportunity to gain recognised vocational qualifications, achieved through opportunities to work alongside qualified and experienced tradesmen on building, landscaping and maintenance projects. Jake’s passion for supporting individuals with learning disabilities started 10 years ago, when he became involved with Bumble Bees, England’s first mixed ability contact Rugby Union team based at Bradford and Bingley Rugby Club. As a player, Committee Member and Safeguarding

Manager, he wanted to support his teammates in finding long-term employment through developing new skills. He established Building Futures with teammate and Director of Rugby, Dan Cookson, and local architect Andrew Stoddard as a nonExecutive Director. Last summer, the organisation completed their first project – rebuilding the changing rooms at Baildon Rugby Club, which involved painting and installing new benches. At the end of the project, they secured further funding to refit the bathrooms. Building Futures offers opportunities to 12 individuals on projects around Leeds and Bradford. Most are in the building industry, three are working with sports clubs and one is officebased, developing administration and social media skills.

Leeds Phil and Lit Celebrates Bicentenary

On the 19th October, the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society is organising a day conference at Leeds City Museum to celebrate the Society’s bicentenary. Papers will discuss the founding of the Phil & Lit in 1819 and its role in the cultural life of 19th century Leeds.

Its efforts to spread scientific knowledge resulted in the establishment of a museum and its collections eventually became the basis of the City Museum. As the name of the Society indicates, its interests were not limited to the scientific, and through various activities the Phil and Lit championed the appreciation of the visual arts and the progress of British artists. Leeds History Lectures at The Leeds Library The history of Leeds is coming under the spotlight in a series of lectures organised by the Thoresby Society – the Leeds Historical Society. The programme features two evening and four lunchtime lectures at the society’s headquarters The Leeds Library, 18 Commercial Street. Themes include the story of Emily Meynell Ingram, the Victorian chatelaine of Temple Newsam House; Joseph Priestley and the 1770s censuses; a costumed performance of the life and thoughts of Leeds historian Ralph Thoresby; Georgian and Victorian prospects and panoramas of Leeds; lost Victorian churches; and the lady members of the Leeds Library.

Swan Song – A Love Song to Birds for Light Night

For Light Night 2019, Opera North is moving over the road to St. John’s Churchyard, New Briggate, with ‘Swan Song’, an immersion in music, birdsong and light.

Swan Song takes flight from Finnish composer Rautavaara’s Swans Migrating, in which swelling orchestral melody mixes with the sounds of whooper swans as they fly south. Follow the path through a forest of light, waxing and waning as it responds to the music in the trees, and finally, step 400 years back in time as you enter the ancient church of St. John’s.

Inside, sit back and be part of an intimate, total musical experience, as Manchester Collective curates an immersive performance of Olivier Messiaen’s epic Catalogue of the Birds, set against brand new music by electronic wunderkind Erland Cooper. Messiaen’s unique and spectacular work for solo piano is a 13-movement tribute to tawny owls, blackbirds, and kingfishers in all their hopping, soaring and flitting glory.

With the world’s bird populations facing peril from climate change and loss of habitat, Swan Song is a love song to birds. The installation will take place in St. John’s Churchyard from 6-10pm, as well as inside the church from 7-10pm. Light Night Returns for its Fifteenth Year Light Night Leeds returns on 10th/ 11th October (6 – 11pm) to transform the streets of Leeds with a dazzling display of light, music and sound. The annual cultural spectacular will take over some of the city centre’s most iconic buildings and locations for the 15th year in a row, with a programme featuring spectacular installations created by artists from across the globe. This year’s event will explore the themes of mind, body and spirit, with more than 60 impressive artistic creations delving into everything from the intricate mechanics of the human body to the limitless realms of our imaginations. Highlights will include a magnificent parade of illuminated dancers, drummers, monsters and marionettes that will bring dreams to life, starting on The Headrow on Thursday 10th October at 7.30pm. Other sites reimagined during the event will be Leeds Town Hall, Kirkgate Market, Leeds Dock and The Queen’s Hotel. Elsewhere, the unmistakable white stonework of Leeds Civic Hall will once again be the backdrop for a striking digital artwork. Polish visual artist Pani Pawlosky’s piece ‘Telekinetic Rumours’ will see the historic building on Millennium Square become the setting for a surrealistic projection that will examine the flow of energy between mind, body, and soul.

Austentatious: An Improvised Jane Austen Novel ‘Austentatious’ is an improvised comedy play starring a cast of the country’s quickest comic performers. Every single show the cast conjures up a new ‘lost’ Jane Austen novel based on nothing more than a title suggested by the audience. The group has established itself as one of the UK’s most popular live acts, with seven sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe, a monthly West End residency in 2018, and a BBC Radio 4 special to mark the bicentenary of Austen’s death.

“We are thrilled to be travelling the length and breadth of the country, rediscovering the lost classics Austen wrote and promptly forgot about”, said Austentatious. “From ‘Northanger Tabby’ to ‘Guardians of the Gallantry’, there’s nothing Austen couldn’t do (as long as our audiences keep thinking them up).”

Previous ‘lost’ masterpieces have included ‘Sixth Sense & Sensibility’, ‘Double 0 Darcy’ and ‘Mansfield Shark’. No two shows are ever the same. Performed in period costume with live musical accompaniment, this is a Regency treat guaranteed to delight Austen novices and die-hard fans alike. Festival Celebrates Anniversary of Leeds/Dortmund Twinning

Leeds/Dortmund 50, an arts festival celebrating the 50th anniversary of the twinning of Leeds and Dortmund (Germany), kicks off on 30th September for ten days, with events at Chapel FM Arts Centre, The Leeds Library and Leeds Civic Hall – all broadcast on East Leeds FM. It will feature two visiting Dortmund writers; ten writing exchanges between writers from our two cities; over 40 writers from West Yorkshire writing brand new work for the festival; five digital conversations between Leeds and Dortmund language students; a choir concert; and a series of interviews with people who have taken part in past exchanges and made lifelong connections through the twinning relationship. There will also be a brand new children’s book in English and German written and illustrated by children from Beechwood Primary School with Matthew Bellwood. Titled ‘The Downhearted Drayman’, it concerns the Barrel Man who pines for his twin brother in Dortmund. Can the other statues in Leeds help them meet again?

In all there will be 25 separate events. Most of them will be broadcast live from Chapel FM Arts Centre on East Leeds FM so that listeners in Germany, indeed all over the world, can listen in and participate. We can’t bring loads of people over here from Dortmund, but with the help of Tech we can do the next best thing. Leeds City Council and Leeds 2023 have been instrumental in making this festival happen. Official visitors from Dortmund will be joining the festivities and will attend the climax of the first week, on the afternoon of Saturday 5th October at Chapel FM. Many of the events will be held in Chapel FM’s fabulous radio theatre, a converted Methodist Chapel in East Leeds, and are free to attend. Trial by Jury at St Edmund’s A semi-staged performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Trial by Jury’ is something that just had to be added to the repertoire of Leeds Festival Chorus, in part because Sir Arthur Sullivan conducted the Chorus in the late nineteenth century. It sang in his cantata ‘The Golden Legend’ at Leeds Town Hall, once thought of as his best serious work. However, the comedies created with his witty collaborator W.S. Gilbert have eclipsed it. ‘Trial by Jury’ was their first big comic success. Its ridiculous legal procedures must have been recognisable to the audience in spite of a sense of humour which might be described as a bit like Monty Python. Gilbert, a barrister, knew what he was dealing with. The Breach of Promise laws gave a jilted partner in a broken engagement the opportunity to sue for damages, a situation which was a gift for comic opera writers in search of absurdity. The laws survived until 1970. A chorus of jurors, barristers, bridesmaids and public sing a series of biased reactions and commentaries which include Sullivan’s burlesque takes on the music of famous composers. The Judge enters with music suitable for a prophet in a Handel oratorio. The performance, with Sinfonia of Leeds, includes a short suite of dances from Britten’s Gloriana and a Haydn piano concerto. It is at St Edmund’s in Roundhay on Saturday 19th October at 7.30pm. William Wright, Christopher Faulkner and Rosie Lomas are soloists, Rebecca Taylor is the pianist and Simon Wright the conductor. Arts&Culture Artist Janet Rawlins is Looking for her ‘Lost Works’

Artist and illustrator Janet Rawlings studied at Leeds College of Art (now Leeds Arts University) from 1947-1952. She draws her inspiration from the Yorkshire Dales and is known for her Dales landscapes in fabric collage and watercolour. ‘Janet Rawlins: Life in The Dales’ is the Leeds Arts University’s latest exhibition, running until 1st November at the Vernon Street Gallery. The exhibition is a celebration of her career, showcasing a selection of her work. It also provides the opportunity to see work by two recent graduates, Sonia Moran and Rosa Hackett, who have responded to Rawlins through their soft sculptural practices. From 1971 to 1982 she created 39 double sided collages for the Leeds Permanent Building Society, with a local theme for each branch. Sadly, all but the Malvern collages are now believed lost. The University and Janet are

The World of Comic Books at Sunny Bank Panel Show at Sunny Bank Mills showcases the world of comic books, graphic novels and sequential art and runs until 10th November. With a wide range of work, the show demonstrates the extraordinary possibilities and potential of an increasingly popular medium, featuring original artwork and prints by around forty artists, it also explores some of the processes used, giving a unique insight into how comics are created. Co-curated by Si Smith and Dick Bonham, the exhibition covers a wide range of genres, from mainstream fantasy and adventure to biography and history; from classic kids’ comics to moving graphic memoirs. Contributing artists include Una, Jade Sarson, Dean Ormston, Tillie Walden, Jacky Fleming, Mawil, Darryl Cunningham, Luke Pearson, Steve Beaumont, and Jonathan Edwards.

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of interactive workshops, artist talks, book launches and a specially produced ‘zine with original content that will be launched in October. Workshops in October half term will be aimed at children and teenagers and will include making monster masks, comic strips and animated monsters for Halloween! The feisty and stylish quartet’s acts of anarchy include a perfunctorily sexy version of Pachelbel’s Canon in D and an apocalyptic karaoke sermon featuring Edith Piaf. They roll down the aisle in a ball of brides, perform a robotic march to Talking Head’s Road to Nowhere and make existential speeches questioning the meaning of life. Gracefool Collective was created in 2013. Its post-intellectual-pseudo-spiritualfeminist-comedy-dance-theatre focuses on the absurdities of modern existence. It aims to provoke, delight, and defy convention through irreverent physicality, sharp writing and arresting characters. Tattu – Contemporary Chinese Dining that Oozes Style and Flavour Tattu bills itself as a ‘contemporary Chinese restaurant’ – it may be Chinese…but not as you know it! The restaurant has just launched its Autumn à la carte menu, which boasts 17 new dishes developed by executive chef Andrew Lassetter and his team and we were lucky enough to be invited to try it. At Tattu, you feel like you are spending a relaxed evening under branches weighed down with cherry blossom. The décor is truly impressive, if a little dark. Although the restaurant is large, it doesn’t feel it because of the clever way it is divided into separate areas with stylish, black screening.

The menu offers new dishes across its small plates and main dishes, along with new, indulgent desserts. The problem is deciding which way to go – a variety of small plates or an enticing main dish. We chose a Mixed Dim Sum Basket with Wagyu, Thai chicken and rock shrimp (£9.50); big, fat Chilli and Sesame Roasted Scallops with crushed edamame and mint (£15); and Tuna Yuzu Ceviche with Avocado, chives, cherry tomatoes and black pepper (£11), to start – all delicious. Other new dishes on the small plates menu include Asian-style Beef Carpaccio and Soft Shell Crab XO with green chilli, spring onion and coriander. It would have been easy to feast just on the small plates but we ventured into ‘large dish’ territory opting for the fabulous Ginger Miso Black Cod served on hoba leaf, with pickled lime and daikon salad (£31) and stunning Balsamic Teriyaki Salmon with Black pepper, pickled ginger and cucumber salad (£18), that sailed in with a proud, silvery sail of salmon skin. Both dishes were exceptional, accompanied by Jasmin rice and crunchy, Tender stem Broccoli with black sesame and truffle.

When it came to desserts though I’m afraid the jury is still out! They were certainly impressive! The Chocolate Brownie Pagoda featured layers of brownie topped with a chocolate ‘roof’ containing mascarpone ice cream – it was enough to feed an army! In addition, as liquid was poured into the holding dish we were enveloped in a ‘dried ice’ effect – much to the amusement of other diners! Another table’s dessert was accompanied by mini firework! It was more show than substance. Both that and the Asian Pear Sticky Toffee Pudding seemed a little out of place on this otherwise delicious menu. Tattu has also added to its vegetarian and vegan options and its seasonal sharing menus also feature an array of the new dishes (from £42pp) - perfect for groups wanting to embrace the traditional, Chinesestyle dining with a host of dishes to share. Everything was beautifully presented, and the service was so nice, friendly and knowledgeable. www.tattu.co.uk.

CommunityNews Employment Project for New Migrants Extended

The service provides a unique combination of one to one support

A Yorkshire project supporting new migrants into employment and training has received another two years of funding from the European Social Fund and National Lottery Community Fund. Connecting Opportunities works with new migrants to help them develop skills, find employment and become part of the community. So far 859 people, from 75 countries have received support, with 48% of those who have left the project now in work and 46% moving into education or training. The service provides a unique combination of one to one support, help to find a job, employment skills training, English classes, wellbeing and mental health support, alongside services like befriending. There is even a popular football team, which came second in a recent tournament during Refugee Week.

“Connecting Opportunities is changing lives and supporting people on inspirational journeys towards their goals”, said Vanessa Lendzionowski, Connecting Opportunities Project Manager. “Our participants and partner organisations across the Leeds City Region, should be proud of what they have achieved so far.” Connecting Opportunities welcomes enquiries from people aged over 15 with the right to work, who have been in the UK for under ten years. The Crypt Celebrates Opening of Regent Lodge St George’s Crypt recently celebrated the opening of Regent Lodge, a scheme built at a cost of £1.9m and which will provide 14 self-contained studio flats for residents with alcohol dependency issues. “This is a building where they will feel valued, supported to make positive life choices and be equipped with the tools they need to reintegrate with their community and to succeed”, said Chris Wilson, Head of Client Services at St George’s Crypt. “We can’t thank the City and our supporters enough for having joined us on this journey. We understand the needs of this particularly vulnerable client group – people with long-term alcohol dependency issues need tailored support, love, care, compassion and chances. They need a stable foundation and to feel included.”

Regent Lodge, built on the site of the Crypt’s former hostel, Regent Terrace, will put into practice a number of theories surrounding recovery from alcohol dependency, community-based service provision and engagement. Building on the success of delivering a range of services to its clients, the Crypt has developed this innovative model that will incorporate and extend support. The aim is to arm those with long-term alcohol issues with the skills and confidence to break the cycle of dependency, re-engage with their communities and develop work readiness skills to become fully independent. Developed with close to a century of experience in delivering a homeless support service, close links with local council and NHS services, and academic support through local university led research and development, St George’s Crypt is well placed to deliver a service that aims to change how Leeds as a city engages with some of its hardest to reach individuals.

Switch On This year's Meanwood Christmas Lights switch on will be on Friday 15th November. Green Road will be closed from 3.30 – 7.30pm and the switch-on will take place at 6pm. This year the event promises to be bigger and better with new lights, fun, food and festivities, and, for the first time ever, a Vortex Tunnel!

The Welcoming Young Refugees campaign is recruiting new carers and supported lodgings providers in North Leeds. They are urgently needed to accommodate the increasing number of young refugees arriving in the region. Almost 90% are boys in their mid to late teens and one of the most important factors for their future wellbeing is a foster carer. At recruitment drop-in events at Headingley Community Hub and Library, North Lane, on 10th October (4-7pm) and 12th October (11-1pm), anyone interested in fostering can meet specialist social workers and experts, who will explain exactly what is involved. Many foster carers find these young people bring unexpected benefits to their lives. “It’s one of the best things we have ever done”, said Sally who fosters Hossein, a Kurdish refugee now studying performing arts. “Hossein brought sunshine, enthusiasm and fun into our lives. He filled a space that we didn’t even know existed. My daughter had always hated being an only child; suddenly she had a little brother!”

Anyone can apply to become a foster carer, as long as they are aged over 21, with a spare room and permanent leave to remain or British citizenship. Foster carers are paid and receive training and support.

Alongside last year’s impressive display will be new lights sponsored by local businesses Terminus and Junction, as well as a set of lights designed by the competition winner from Carr Manor Community School.

Former Kindertransport refugee Lord Alf Dubs said of the Welcoming Young Refugees project: “Young people are entitled to be helped by us to have a life, to have safety, to have love and affection. To get on with things, instead of this fearful existence, worried about their safety every night.”

Enjoy entertainment for the whole family, including festive music, performances from local choirs, and stalls selling homemade cakes, mince pies, and gifts. There will be food and drink available from several vendors, as well as our local bars and restaurants.

“We’re calling on people across Yorkshire to find out more about the campaign and take the first step to supporting a young refugee”, said Dave Brown, Head of Migration Yorkshire. “These courageous young people have a lot to give and a foster placement is the first step towards a successful life in the UK.”

An exciting addition is The Vortex Tunnel, which claims to be "the world's ultimate walk through illusion”. Children will have the opportunity to post a letter to Santa with the new Santa post box! There may even be a visit from the big man himself…

Imam Qari Asim Recognised for Building Bridges Between Communities Imam Qari Asim, Chair of Mosques & Imams National Advisory Board, senior editor at Imams Online, trustee of Christian Muslim Forum, and a governor at Leeds Beckett University, has been recognised by the Indonesian government for his efforts to build bridges between communities. Professor Syafiq A. Mughni, Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia for Interfaith and Inter-civilizational Dialogue and Cooperation, was hosted by Imam Qari Asim in Leeds. During his visit he met with interfaith leaders and activists, briefed them about inter-civilization cooperation in Indonesia, and learnt about the work done in Yorkshire to help better community relations and enhance integration. Professor Mughni spoke about 'Wasatiyyah Islam' 'Middle Path' of Islam, which is a model used in Indonesia to

counter the rising threat of transnational terrorism and enhance harmonious relations between communities. Wasatiyyah Islam can also be used to foster harmony and stability and challenge extreme religious understanding. Imam Qari Asim was recognised for his tireless efforts in building bridges between communities, working towards religious harmony, tackling hatred in society, and promoting Wasatiyyah Islam. "I am honoured and humbled to have received this award”, he said. “It is important that we continue to tackle all forms of hatred, bigotry and prejudice and present a true image of Islam to those who distort it and misunderstand it."

CommunityNews Leeds Bridge Club Opens New Teaching Room In early September, Councillor Sharon Hamilton officially opened the Leeds Bridge Club’s new Teaching Room – giving the club much needed space for its many classes, which start week commencing 23rd September. Thanks to a grant from the Yorkshire Contract Bridge Association, the room is equipped with computer facilities, enhancing the tutors’ already successful teaching methods. Leeds Bridge Club is thriving with a growing membership and it hopes to encourage its students to continue playing at the club once they have completed their basic instruction. Development and Education teams, providing learning in various forms in a friendly environment, from complete beginners to county level players. A Climate Change Emergency The World is experiencing a Climate Emergency. From the Amazon to the Arctic the evidence is all there. It’s time to take action. At full Council meeting on 27th March, Leeds City Council declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ and I spoke about it in the Council Chamber. Let me be really clear - the science is irrefutable. It passes the gold standard for scientific research. Technically we know more about climate change then we do gravity right now. A UN report last year starkly demonstrated that we had 12 years to avert catastrophic climate change. Not mildly inconvenient. But catastrophic. It is vital that we act.. Young people have been holding ‘climate strikes’ each month. Whatever you may think about children missing school, it is clear that they get the urgency and the need for change. This

Roundhay Park Receives ‘Much Loved’ Status Roundhay Park recently received ‘much loved’ status in the Fields in Trust’s UK’s Best Park Awards. Voting was at an all-time high, with 36,832 park users casting votes to help decide the winner of the UK’s Best Park 2019.

“We are absolutely delighted and very proud that Roundhay Park has received ‘Much Loved’ status in the Fields of Trust UK Best Park 2019 awards”, said Cllr Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for environment & active lifestyles. “To see Roundhay Park placed within the top 20% of all nominations UK-wide is a wonderful achievement and is recognition of what a truly fantastic green space it is

Roundhay Church Secures National Lottery Funding

New Minister for Lidgett Park and Shadwell

St Edmund’s, Roundhay, has been awarded a £60,000 grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The grant is a substantial contribution towards the £130,000 project for restoration work required to the exterior of the building. The project will repair part of the roof to ensure the building is watertight for generations to come. The church is well used by the congregation and by the community at large for a wide range of cultural, community and festival events, attracting thousands of visitors a year. The money raised will enabling increased community use, education, and engagement with this beautiful parish church and its heritage.

The large Grade II listed building is an impressive flexible space that can be re-organised for a variety of events. The building has also been adapted to allow access and engagement for a wide range of special needs. The grant funding will also help to improve communications through electronic media and church signage. A full programme of heritage, educational and special events will celebrate the heritage of the church. “We’re delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to National Lottery players”, said Richard Brett, Project Coordinator. “St Edmund’s Church has been a focus for community activity in Roundhay for the past 100 years and it’s great to know that we are now able to preserve it for another century.”

A welcome service was held recently at Lidgett Park Methodist Church for Revd Tanya Short, the new minister in the Leeds North & East Methodist Circuit. She was welcomed by Revd Robert Creamer, the Circuit Superintendent Minister. For every silver lining there is a cloud. Ok, I know that isn’t exactly how the saying goes, but it was what came to mind when officers recently updated us on the works at the junction of the A61/ Outer Ring Road, and lower down with Stonegate Road. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2019, the date given at the outset of the project. Like many residents, I feel like these roadworks have been there for an age - so an end date is certainly welcome…now for the cloud! The final part of the work involves laying the new road surface and that is going to require the full closure of these roads and junctions. I had hoped that by the time I wrote this column, the precise dates and

personal information, or access to your technology to any unsolicited call you receive. If you believe a call to be genuine, find the company’s telephone number yourself and call them back, this way you can be certain you are speaking to an authorised person. Finally, scary but true - Halloween is almost upon us. The Shelduck is midway in size between a duck and a goose, and its long neck gives it a goose-like appearance. It is very easy to identify, whether in flight or on the ground, due to its boldly patterned plumage. Its beak is bright red, its head and neck very dark green, and the wide reddy brown band across its breast contrasts sharply with its white sides and belly. It also has black and white wings, a black stripe down the centre of its belly and black tips to its tail. In Britain the Shelduck is resident all year round, although birds from further east in Europe do migrate to subtropical areas in Winter. In the UK they are mainly found on sheltered coasts and estuaries, although in recent years they have started to frequent inland bodies of water, such as gravel pits and reservoirs. They feed on shellfish, crabs, worms and other invertebrates, in particular a tiny snail called Hydrobia, found in estuaries.

They nest in dense vegetation, sometimes using old rabbit burrows, and the nest consists of grass, straw and down feathers from the female’s breast. After breeding, they migrate in large numbers to traditional moulting areas, such as the Heligoland Bight off the German coast. For a change, the Shelduck is doing well in Britain, with 11,000 breeding pairs, and numbers on the increase. Leeds RSPB Group

Divide large clumps of rhubarb now. Harvest the last of your peas and beans, cutting the plants down to ground level to let the roots rot down in the soil as they are a good source of nitrogen. Harvest squashes and pumpkins.

Cut back any perennials if they look straggly and untidy as they die back and pull out any weeds that you find. Add a mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the plants. Check under and around the pots to make sure you are not bringing in any unwanted pests too.

• Grass growth should slow down this month so you will not need to mow as often, but if temperatures remain higher than 6° Celsius it will continue to need an occasional cut. Re-shape or neaten the edges of the lawn using a sharp half-moon edging tool. Aerate the lawn and rake up any thatch.

Europe‘s largest outdoor film festival comes to The Venue at Leeds College of Music on Friday 8th November.

The Goth City Festival returns from 11th – 19th October for a fourth instalment, with a theme celebrating the unprecedented level of unity in the local scene. 'Goth City IV: Pax Gothica' builds on the success of the first three events with a line-up including local goth legends The Society, one of the UK's leading goth acts The Last Cry, rising dark-rockers Bad Pollyanna, chart-conquering northerners Auger, and many more. Goth City celebrates the gothic and post-punk heritage of the city and of Yorkshire generally. Events include, gigs, clubs, discussions, spoken word, acoustic and social events at six venues, and features more than 20 different bands and performers. In keeping with the DIY and underground spirit of the event, the festival is held at the best alternative venues, including Wharf Chambers, Bad Apples and the Fox & Newt. All proceeds from Goth City Promotions events will be donated to PAFRAS (Positive Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers), a local charity for destitute refugees and asylum seekers.

The festival has raised nearly £10,000 for PAFRAS. The festival will also feature DJs from local goth megaclub Carpe Noctum, as well as events organised by promoters like Leeds Festival of Gothica. Women Lead the Way for JazzLeeds Autumn Programme There are many young as well as more experienced women jazz musicians out there, playing great, exciting and inventive music and JazzLeeds is bringing them front and centre in its Autumn programme. Jazz Leeds headlines eleven bands led by female instrumentalists in a series entitled ‘Women Jazz Leaders’. Some we’ve enjoyed hearing in Leeds before, for example Karen Sharp’s distinctive tenor backed by Nikki Iles’ world-class piano work, Kim Macari’s quirky trumpet, or swinging bassist Alison Rayner. Canadian trumpeter Ingirid Jensen returns, this time with her sax playing sister Christine Jensen, leading their Whirlwind Jazz Orchestra. London trombonist Rosie Turton, who wowed Seven Arts as part of ‘Nérija’ will appear with her ‘5ive’ group – which includes Maria Chiara Argirò on piano, who has her own spot at Seven Arts in late October.

The programme also includes pianist Kathrine Windfeld from Denmark and London saxist Asha Parkinson with her band ‘Kalpadruma’. ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD DIRECTED BY: QUENTIN TARANTINO STARRING: LEONARDO DICAPRIO, BRAD PITT, MARGOT ROBBIE, EMILE HIRSCH, MARGARET QUALLEY, TIMOTHY OLYPHANT, AUSTIN BUTLER, DAKOTA FANNING, BRUCE DERN, AL PACINO, KURT RUSSELL CERT: 18 RUNNING TIME: 161 MINUTES "They just say lines that other people write and pretend to murder people on their stupid TV shows. Meanwhile, real people are being murdered every day in Vietnam..."

Think of late Sixties’ America and you're rewarded with a rollcall of technical, cultural and creative triumphs — from the Apollo Moon landings to the civil rights movement and Led Zeppelin’s breakthrough album. But then there’s the crisis in Vietnam, a new distrust of the government, assassinations of political figures and the mounting phenomena of the American serial killer. In Quentin Tarantino’s most indulgent and personal work to date, his ninth film attempts to recapture the impact of this period against a backdrop he knows intimately: the pressure of producing a movie in a rapidly changing world. A progressively grizzled Leonard DiCaprio is Rick Dalton, a washed-up TV star forced into Spaghetti Westerns with his trusted if morally ambiguous stuntman-chauffeur Cliff Booth, played by an equally weathered Brad Pitt. It’s a difficult transition for Dalton, who slowly accepts he’s no longer the young leading man, rather the ageing guest artiste in an evolving industry. Anxieties and addictions are unpacked by DiCaprio in a surprisingly sensitive performance, proving he’s found his centre in his middle years. Brad Pitt is just as alluring as the tough but cool stuntman, who offers all the thuggish swagger of a young Sean Connery, whilst bearing an odd likeness to a contemporary Robert Redford. The two stars offer a comical buddy-movie quality in the closest thing this movie has to a narrative, but they never quite command centre stage. That’s because this is a film which attempts to capture more than just its characters’ lives – it’s about absorbing the wider culture of the time. Rick and Cliff are wholly fictional beings, but they orbit in a space of real-life Hollywood stars including Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen and James Stacy. Sharon Tate, the ill-fated wife of Roman Polanski, is brought to life in an endearing performance from Margot Robbie, but there’s little interrogation of character with scant insight into

what was to happen with the Charles Manson Family. Tate’s positioning feels more like a bolt-on than a subplot, and whilst Robbie hands over a lovely performance, she’s ultimately left with very little to work with. By throwing traditional story structure aside, the film feels more like a collection of set pieces than a long-form experience, and is perhaps best viewed with that in mind. Highlights include a tender scene between Dalton and a child actor which evolves into a compelling counselling session, allowing DiCaprio to fully flex his acting muscles against a most unlikely screen partner. Later, a charged sequence in a car between Pitt and a girl from the Manson Family escalates into a tense standoff on a dusty backlot — offering a thrilling hybrid of Western, mystery, horror and pseudo history in one dose. Such chapters are gripping in isolation, but in the wider narrative contributes little to a film which isn’t concerned with storytelling.

The lasting impact is the true feeling of 1969 America itself. There’s a peerless commitment to recreating the atheistic of the time, from cars to clothes, music, tobacco, cheap gas and alcohol pervading almost every shot. It sounds great too, drawing from a hit reserve of Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel and Joe Cocker, to name a few.

For two-and-a-half hours the spectre of the Manson Family murders hangs heavy like a raincloud. Whilst the events are never quite depicted in detail, Tarantino nevertheless builds towards a climax which is vented in his trademark stamp of ultraviolence. The action is so outrageously extreme and comic-strip that it’s almost farcical, and ultimately jars with the documentary grounding of the rest of the film. But perhaps the shocking contrast is the whole point?

'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' is a funky fairy tale of the recent past. Often indulgent and unrestrained, yet consistently fascinating and beautifully shot, it’s a macho evocation of a sunnier, slicker, free-spirited era. From Brad Pitt’s fantastic Hawaiian shirt to Pan Am’s Boeing 747 upper-deck bar full of dancing miniskirts, this is Tarantino's unapologetic love letter to a finite era of hedonism, embellished through a lurid, fanciful lens. Problematic and patchy in terms of story, but an incredibly rewarding journey through time.

Poppy Run Leeds 2019 is on Saturday 9th November, 11am at Middleton Park. You can choose to run, jog or walk the course and the event is open to all ages and abilities, including four legged friends. By taking part and fundraising you’ll help veterans in the Armed Forces’ community to gain skills and selfbelief to transform their lives as they recover from physical and mental challenges. As part of her 35 Before 35 challenge, a two-year initiative to raise awareness of mental health and fundraise for Leeds Mind and Yorkshire Cancer Research, Gill Barker recently completed a 127-mile run along the Liverpool to Leeds canal. She wanted to help people, push her physical and mental boundaries, and improve her own mental health. In the last year she completed 28 out of 35 challenges and has raised over £2,000 for charity through a Coast-to-Coast cycle, Brighton Marathon, climbing Mount Snowdon and completing a 24-hour run. She has also overcome several mental challenges as part of the initiative, including public speaking and overcoming her fear of heights. “I’m glad that I managed to stick to running 20 something miles a day for six

consecutive days”, said Gill. “It’s amazing what you learn about yourself on runs like this – I would recommend it to anyone!” Gill then cycled 30 miles in the Selby Three Swans Sportive just two days after completing the Liverpool/ Leeds canal run in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research. “When I registered for this ride, it didn’t click that it would be two days after the canal run! We really can achieve anything we put our minds to.” Gill studied Marketing at Leeds Trinity and now works at the University as a Senior Marketing Officer and has carried out all the challenges whilst working fulltime. Her final challenge will take place on Saturday 14th March 2020, tying in with her 35th birthday.

A HUNT FOR MOVIE MONSTERS This October half term (26 Oct – 3 Nov) the Royal Armouries Museum is on the hunt for Movie Monsters. Join its ghost-hunting gang and find out how to get rid of mythical monstrosities as it battles with mummies, vampires, werewolves and zombies. It all seems so simple on the big screen. Find out how they really make the magic happen. Plus there’s a brand new gallery exhibition of arms, armour and ephemera from cult and classic movies and television shows. On Saturday 5th October, 2pm at The Venue, Leeds College of Music, Jane Barrow will once again showcase her students’ musical skill. Jane Browne's second children’s book ‘Gaia’s Revenge’ is the second instalment in the fantasy series ‘The Earth Chronicles’, which follows the adventures of 13-yearold Hannah, who is tasked with saving her family as well as Gaia, the mother of all nature, whose demise would destroy worlds and all of humanity. The books also teach young people about fulfilling their potential, courage, bravery, family relationships, friendship, loss and change. “With climate change finally being taken seriously and made a more pressing political, global issue, I feel immensely proud of so many young people standing up and ensuring they are listened to”, said Jane. “I actually began writing this series 12 years ago, so it feels quite astonishing that I am releasing the series just as people are realising that we have to act, and we have a responsibility to re-balance the devastation we have inflicted upon our planet.”

Jane published her first book in the trilogy – ‘Hannah and the Hollow Tree’ - whilst completing a master’s degree in Creative Writing at Leeds Trinity University and working full-time as a primary teacher. The final book in the trilogy, ‘Hollow’s End’, will conclude with an epic battle to save humanity and will be released in 2020. Gaia’s Revenge will be released at a book launch on Thursday 24th October, from 7pm at Farsley Constitutional Club. The event is free to attend and will feature readings, book signings, a Q&A session and special guests from Leeds Trinity University. The concert will feature about 40 past and present piano students, ranging in age from five to 74, from relative beginners through to post Grade 8. It promises to be an entertaining afternoon with many different genres of music – Beatles through to Rachmaninoff! Jane has been a piano tutor for over 30 years. As a child she performed on YTV Junior Showtime and won the piano section of Leeds Top Talent for three consecutive years at Leeds Town Hall.
