The Volunteer Heritage Research group at Otley Courthouse is delighted to announce that it has received a ‘Your Heritage’ award of £9,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. These awards are for local and grassroots heritage activities, of which recording oral history is an important part. The Memories of Otley Courthouse project will record the memories of people who have had any association with the Courthouse and Police Station up until the courts closed in 1997. The Courthouse Heritage Group would like to invite anyone interested to join the project and help with the collection and editing of material for inclusion in a book and on display boards in The Courthouse. No special skill is needed and full training will be given. The group has already collected the memories of some people who either worked at the Courthouse or attended court. However, there are many more and they would like help in recording their accounts.

Otley Courthouse played a really important role in the town, especially before 1974 when its jurisdiction stretched from Ilkley to Arthington, and Baildon to Blubberhouses. If you have a story to tell, get in touch! “Heritage is not all about castles, museums and old buildings”, said Fiona Spiers, Head of HLF Yorkshire and the Humber. “Memories, stories and reminiscences are a very popular way of learning about our past and sharing this with future generations. Otley Courthouse played a central role in the life of Otley and it is important to take the opportunity to preserve its heritage by bringing its stories to life, letting everyone get involved and share their past.” If you would like to help, contact the Courthouse on 01943 467466 or call in to leave your details.

The programme is a very important part of the Fayre, its advertising and sales contribute hugely to the running of the event. Don’t forget to visit the Fayre on Sunday 11th December from 12noon

– 6pm, and be sure to purchase a programme! These will be on sale at various outlets around town from early November. EYESORE CORNER TRANSFORMED Otley in Bloom (OiB) has transformed the old gas works corner (the corner of Cambridge Street and Well Croft), from an overgrown site full of brambles into a tidy plot with fruit and vegetables for residents. Earlier this year, Otley in Bloom instigated a ‘refurbishment’ of the corner which had become dilapidated and overgrown with brambles and nettles. It was in desperate need of some TLC. The site has now been transformed – the weeds are gone and have been replaced by a lawn and a raised bed for vegetables, rhubarb, parsley, strawberries, mint and much more, and some low-growing apple trees.

The green space is to be looked after by its neighbours, and next year anyone living in the area, can pick and enjoy some fruit and vegetables for free. OiB would like to thank all the businesses and private homes in and around Otley for their continued effort in making their gardens, window ledges and walls look so attractive with flowers and greenery. Combined small efforts can make a big difference. For more information on OiB activities, visit www.facebook.com/Otley-In-Bloom.

ANOTHER SUCCESS FOR BURLEY SUMMER FESTIVAL The third Burley Summer Festival, formally opened by John Mitchell from ITV Calendar, was a great success, with more people than ever taking part. The weather played an important part as there were so many outdoor events. On the opening day the weather held and people enjoyed visiting the new Hydropower facility near Greenholme Mill. The Anchor Dance Band and games organised by Burley Oaks PTA attracted a large crowd to the park in the afternoon. The monthly Farmers’ Market and the craft market were abuzz, and the Silsden Town Band, Burley Art Show,

The week was packed with activities, including walks, animation workshops, street dance, basketball, Zumba, Morris dancing, teddy bears’ picnic and a chance to have cherished possessions valued at the Antiques Roadshow. And, the Beer and Cider Festival at the Social Club was a huge success. The Festival Committee would like to thank everyone who helped organise the festival, provided venues, or volunteered. Appreciation for financial support goes to Burley in Wharfedale Community Trust, Burley and District Chamber of Trade, Shipley Area Committee, and programme advertisers.

METHODIST CHURCHES CELEBRATE FORMATION OF NEW CIRCUIT On 6th September, over 200 members of the Methodist Church from Addingham, Ilkley, Beamsley, Ben Rhydding, Burley, Otley, Norwood, Timble, Pool, Bramhope, Menston, Guiseley, Yeadon and Rawdon, attended a ‘Celebration of Welcome and New Beginnings for the life and work of the Methodist Church in Wharfedale and Aireborough’ at Otley Methodist Church.

Burley Nursery School Fun Day, and dry stone walling workshop all attracted large audiences. In the evening there was chamber music from the Kelsey Quartet and Jennifer Galloway in St Mary’s Church, and local band ‘5 Dollar Shoes’ was at the Social Club. The Red Lion hosted a games night inside and a very well attended ‘Open Mic’ event outside. Sunday saw nearly 300 vehicles at the Classic Vehicles Show – a record number! Other attractions included Paperzoo Theatre who presented Dennis Potter’s Blue Remembered Hills, there was music from ‘The Stalks’, an Evening of Nostalgia from Burley Theatre Group, a concert by the Fairfax Singers and organist Mike Nicholas, a ceilidh with Chris Nelson and Northern Comfort, and a sell out opera concert with Sarah Estill and Ben Kerslake. 10October 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk

The Committee welcomes feedback on the festival, which can be submitted via www.burley-in-wharfedale.org or sent to the Festival Committee at Burley Parish Council, Queen’s Hall, Main Street, Burley in Wharfedale LS29 7BT. Residents will receive a feedback form with their October Parish Council newsletter. So far feedback has been very positive. Sylvia Tilford, Chair Festival Committee

The ‘Moor Run’ 12th November This event has to take place outside Festival week because of restrictions in accessing the moor before the end of October. Entry forms can be downloaded from www. burley-in-wharfedale.org

In 2007 the Methodist Conference adopted the report entitled Mapping the Way Forward: Regrouping for Mission to ensure the Methodist Church was shaped and resourced in a realistic, sustainable and purposeful way. The report required all Districts and Circuits to engage with this journey of exploration, within a five year timeframe. Representatives of the Ilkley and Otley and Aireborough Circuits met in 2009/ 2010 to discuss the formation of a new circuit. This was agreed last November and the previous Ilkley, and Otley and Aireborough Circuits have now joined to form the new Wharfedale & Aireborough Circuit. The inauguration service was led by the Rev Dr Liz Smith, Chair of the Leeds District of Methodist Churches and the preacher was Rev Dr Neil G Richardson, former President of the Methodist Conference. Rev. Julian Pursehouse was formally commissioned as Superintendent Minister of the new Circuit, which will be within the Leeds District.

OTLEY PUB CLUB LAUNCHES WEBSITE Otley Pub Club has just launched its official website – www.otleypubclub.co.uk – so it can better let people know what’s happening at local hostelries. The Club, established last year by Peter Jackson, aims to encourage local people to support the town’s pubs and communicate any events which may be taking place. “We think Otley Pub Club is pretty unique. We are non-political and not supported by the drinks industry, so we can be as vocal and outspoken as we want to be”, said Peter. “The website has been a priority from day one. Until now we have had to rely on the local media and leaflets. The new website offers local businesses the chance to advertise, and this new source of income will greatly help with our campaigns. “The new website, built by local web development company Centurius, will be supported by Facebook and Twitter micro-sites, and we are all really excited about the future of the club and what it can achieve.”

DON’T CRY FOR BEEF, ARGENTINA! GAUCHO PUT ON A MASTERCLASS THAT DEFINITELY GETS TOP MARKS Despite having been open now for a year, you would be forgiven for missing Gaucho in Leeds city centre. The unassuming entrance on Park Row is tucked away in the heart of the city’s business district and is easy to miss for those not in the know. Fortunately for us, we had the opportunity to meet the Gaucho team for a masterclass in their specialty – Argentine beef and wine. Gaucho revealed itself to be a very elegantly put together venue with slick, modern monochrome décor and a well stocked bar that offer familiar cocktails with an Argentine twist (try the Pommelina, their take on a Caipirinha – delicious!). Our hosts for the evening were Mike Reid, Executive Chef, who opened our eyes to what makes Argentine beef so exquisite, and Phil Crozier, Wine Director, who guided us through a myriad of red wines to complement the beef. The beef was phenomenal and each of the six cuts we tried was cooked to melt-in-the-mouth perfection. The secret appears to be a combination of how the beef is reared and aged. Much of it is down to the Argentinean terrain, which offers a rich diet of easy-todigest fine grass. The level ground means that the cows’ muscles grow evenly, resulting in cattle that are not only identical in size, but also meat that is beautifully tender throughout. The meat is wet aged, vacuum sealed and left

to mature in its own juices, as it is shipped over to UK for use in Gaucho’s 14 UK restaurants. The award-winning wine list comprises the largest collection of Argentine wines anywhere outside Argentina and Phil visits at least twice a year to source the best available. Gaucho even have their own vineyard. As with the beef, it is the terrain that makes Argentine wine so different. Most of the vineyards are in the province of Mendoza, high on the slopes of the Andes, and varied changes in altitude result in extraordinary wine-growing conditions. The wine seasons are also longer than in Europe, giving the grapes more time to mature on the vine, so they have a richer flavour and can be drunk much younger than many of their European counterparts. The evening was fascinating and we learnt more about Argentine beef and wine than we ever thought we could want to know! The service is impeccable, the atmosphere formal but not stiff and the food flawless. Gaucho’s sophisticated elegance makes it perfect for corporate entertaining and events, a romantic night out or even just a quick cocktail in the bar, I know we will be heading there again. Gaucho is at 21 Park Row, Leeds LS1 For more details visit: www. gauchorestaurants.co.uk or call 0113 246 1777

A SPECIAL OFFER FOR NLL READERS! Go along to Gaucho with this review and they will treat you to a special 125ml glass of sommelier matched wine with your first two courses, plus a sumptuous white and dark chocolate brownie, with dark cherry sauce, served with a glass of their Port Style Malbec, Malamado to finish. Timescapes: Family Lives over Time SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER AT LEEDS ART GALLERY As part of the national ‘Festival of Social Science’, the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds is staging ‘Timescapes’, a free exhibition that explores the value of social history, explaining how peoples’ memories are important to understanding society and how the public can help in social research. For the past five years, the University of Leeds has been leading a programme of research into the changing nature of family life. Researchers from five universities across the UK have been ‘walking alongside’ people from all walks of life and all ages, to document how their lives unfold

recordings, drawing on the accounts of young people, parents and grandparents. The exhibition also includes material from the Mass Observation Archive, an historical archive that has been documenting the everyday lives of people across the UK since before World War Two.

and to understand these changes from the perspectives of the people themselves. Timescapes attempts to turn these ‘snap shots’ of life into a movie, complete with personal narratives, photos, videos and sound

FEEL GOOD, LOOK GREAT! PAGE 37

Visitors will have an opportunity to contribute their own memories, which will be displayed on a ‘memory wall’, and later included in the Timescapes archive. There will also be workshops on how to research and record your family history. These are free, but booking is advisable. For further information, visit www.timescapes.leeds.ac.uk

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon

As autumn arrives, many birds are gathering together for the winter. Among these are two farmland birds, yellowhammers and linnets, which form flocks separately or together and sometimes with finches such as chaffinch, and buntings such as reed bunting. Stubble fields are a favourite feeding area. Yellowhammers are elongated longtailed buntings. Males have a yellowish head and undersides with a redbrown rump contrasting with an olive-brown back. By contrast females are browner and more streaked. Evocative of warm summer days is the repetitive song. Restless and active, linnets fly in tight, bounding flocks. They are slim and long-tailed, smaller than yellowhammers. In summer plumage, males have a grey head and brown

back with red on forehead and breast. Females, and males in winter, are brownish. Melodious, mixed with chattering notes, the song is cheerful and pleasant. Both species prefer open lowland country where they prefer hedges, young plantations, heaths and other

bushy areas. Linnets are particularly fond of gorse bushes as nesting sites. Neither bird is as common as formerly. A contributory factor is considered to be reduced availability of winter seed.

Earlier this year, Elaine Bamford had gastric bypass surgery – not an easy option, as it required a complete lifestyle change. “All the foods I had eaten were suddenly reduced to a few mouthfuls rather than a huge plateful”, said Elaine. “I missed bread the most! The first few weeks were very difficult. It felt like I had done a million sit-ups as my stomach muscles were so tight after the operation. “Once things settled down, the weight began to drop off and it was all worth it. I felt more energised. After 14 weeks I had lost five stone, and gone down five dress sizes! My biggest problem was clothes because my size was constantly changing.” That’s when Elaine decided to start

a clothing hire service for people who were going through similar experiences. No one else was offering such a service for bariatric patients, and trying to keep up with rapid weight loss can be very expensive! ‘The Clothes Line’ has an ever increasing range of quality clothing in sizes 32-16 (decreasing in size in

LEEDS SUMMAT GARDENROUND-UP ROUND-UP GATHERING 2011 By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural

............................................... We are now preparing to put our gardens to bed for the winter.

INSPIRING DEBATE AND CONVERSATION ABOUT OUR FUTURE

Start by protecting them from hard frosts and snow. For those who grow tree ferns and bananas, cut all dead leaves off and lag the trunks and growing points with a six inch layer of straw then wrap hessian around them. Other tender plants also need to be protected, if we don’t want to lose them like many of us did last winter. Those in tubs and pots need fleece wrapping round the pot as well as covering the plant itself. Blackcurrants need pruning now. Cut black bark shoots back to the pale brown new growth. Propagate deutzia, philadelphus and many other shrubs from hardwood cuttings. Plant them one or two to a pot and place in a cold frame or sheltered spot. Once rooted, pot on in the spring – they will be ready for planting out the following year. Sow hardy annuals either by scattering seeds or into pots ready for an early summer show. Calendula, Californian poppy, Limnanthes plants (such as Cerinthe Major, Foxgloves, even Antirrhinums) will self sow, making the garden look less rigid and softening hard lines. Many herbs are ready for picking and drying, or can be used fresh to make infusions or tinctures. An infusion of honeysuckle flowers (Lonicera Periclymenum) used to be used to treat chest infections. They can also be washed and placed into a jar with runny honey to make a soothing syrup. Look out for other herbs that can be used medicinally and add them to your garden. After a final weeding, empty compost bins on the exposed areas, hopefully keeping further weeds at bay. One persistent weed is the red leafed oxalis, which spreads by fine hair ryzomes underground. The best way to deal with it is to use a Glysophate-based killer. Remember to protect any surrounding plants from the spray. Keep your wooden garden furniture in good condition by painting it when dry with Linseed Oil, Sandolin or Cuprinol preservatives.

ANTONY GORMLEY AT HAREWOOD HOUSE key figures in the development of modern sculpture and a strong influence and inspiration for Gormley himself. Gormley cited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Henry Moore Foundation as vital exponents for contemporary sculpture and posited that something about the landscape of Yorkshire, particulary its rich mining heritage and sense of community, is conducive to the creation of great work in this medium. A central and recurrent theme in Gormley’s work is the relationship between the human form and its environment. This new work, entitled Two States, is no exception and speaks to man’s connection to (or disconnection from) nature. Gormley says he feels Harewood House, with its neo-classical architecture surrounded by rolling, idyllic countryside is a fitting and evocative setting for these pieces to make their first appearance.

him happy to speak expansively and engagingly about his art.

As the man behind the Angel of the North, Gormley obviously harbours a fondness for our part of the world and draws inspiration from the northern landscape. When asked what has brought him back to Yorkshire, Gormley explained that We were lucky enough to catch up the idea of exhibiting new work at with the man himself at Harewood, Harewood House appealed as it Photography: Paul Dishman www. where these new works can be has previously housed the iconic photographybypauldishman.co.uk seen for the first time, and found Adam by Jacob Epstein, one of the

Gormley obviously harbours a fondness for our part of the world and draws inspiration from the northern landscape While Two States offers a stirring depiction of the human form, it differs somewhat from previous Gormley works such as Another Place or Event Horizon with their more organic, naturalistic physicality. Two States came about, Gormley says, while developing what he calls the “Block-Block” works, which were an attempt to

explore a new language of sculpture. The result is what he describes as a kind of ‘pixellated cubism’ wherein the human body is represented as a figure comprised of squares or blocks. The thought process behind this, he explained, is based on man’s changing relationship to his surroundings - now that over half the world’s population live in urbanized areas, or, more specifically, within an urban grid system. This notion of the altered state of our physical environment is coupled with the integration of technology into our lives and the fact that our chief means of communication and exchange of information is conducted through bytes, bits and the pixels of computer interfaces.

W

hat struck me, when able to view Two States at close quarters, was how these figures, ostensibly abstract at the outset, reveal their humanity the longer you spend in their presence. As with many of Gormley’s sculptures, the initial casts were taken from his own six foot-something frame and, while we’re at first confronted with these twin towers of rusty iron blocks, before long one begins to sense that there is a human soul contained within the metallic grid, alive, aware and yearning to reconnect with the world at large. Two States will be on show at Harewood House until 30th October.

The event, organised by the Friends of The Manor House as a contribution to the Ilkley Literature Festival, also fits in nicely with the new Ilkley Art Trail. Piers, who often exhibits in the Royal Academy Summer Show and November’s New English Art Club, began composing music set to his published verse in 1993. He uses

PAINT IT WHITE – THE STORY OF A LEEDS UNITED SUPER-FAN Paint It White, the hilarious life-story of Gary Edwards, a painter and decorator and avid Leeds United fan, will be staged at Ilkley Playhouse on 21st October, and the West Yorkshire Playhouse on 25th and 26th October.

MORE FABULOUS ART AT ST GEMMA’S ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION & SALE St. Gemma’s Hospice invites you to its 11th Annual Art Exhibition & Sale at The Grammar School at Leeds, Alwoodley, from Thursday 3rd – Saturday 5th November (10am – 6pm), and Sunday 6th November (10am – 4pm).

The play, adapted from Edwards’ book by ex-BBC journalist, producer and writer Les Rowley, is based on the experiences of the Kippax-born superfan who has missed just one game since 1968. Somehow he managed to juggle his passion for the club alongside the fundamentals of life. From a marriage lasting weeks, to driving to matches in a hearse, the play charts the ups and downs of a life as well of that of the team. Gary Edwards pictured with actor Gary Dunnington

There will be a huge variety of art on display, from both professional and up-and-coming artists. You’ll find over 800 paintings, photographs and pastels. It’s an excellent opportunity to start or expand your art collection and buy affordable, original pieces. Prices range from just £30 to £700. You could find the perfect Christmas, birthday or anniversary gifts.

“In its first run on the fringes of the main theatre circuit, audiences laughed and cried in all the right places”, said Les. “With Leeds United there was more crying than laughing. “The play is about the unbelievable life of a normal bloke, and it is heartwarming to see such a character loved and admired by almost everyone he comes into contact with. You don’t even need to like football to enjoy this play.” Gary Dunnington, Johnny Dixon (Coronation Street), Cathy Breeze (Les Miserables) and Nigel Collins take on the roles to tell the Gary’s story. The play is directed by Rayner Bourton (Rocky Horror Show) and Alun Lewis (Emmerdale). For further information and tickets visit www.paintitwhite.co.uk

A percentage of all sales is donated to St. Gemma’s, and the hospice has previously raised an outstanding £140,000 from this event. Entry is just £2 and you can also enjoy delicious cakes and pastries from the Art Cafe. There will also be a fabulous Craft Fair running alongside the exhibition on both the Saturday and Sunday.

LEEDS LOVES SHOPPING! special Farmers’ Market on Briggate on Sunday 16th October. Dress Me Beautiful Leeds Fashion Show’s Dress Me Beautiful is on Friday 14th October at Leeds City Museum. Prepare to be ‘wowed’ once again as young designers, models and fashion students showcase their designs and talent. The show provides a superb platform for their designs and bridges the gap between education and the fashion industry. Blaise Reynolds, winner of The Look of Leeds, a competition held earlier this year will also be taking part in the event. Demonstrating the importance of Leeds as a shopping venue Leeds is already famous as a shopping venue. It has over two million square feet of retail space and 971 outlets. Over £1 billion is being invested in the city with Trinity Leeds and Eastgate Quarters which will together add an extra 1,400,000 square feet. Eastgate Quarters will include a flagship John Lewis store. Leeds currently sits at seventh in the country’s retail rankings, these two new developments will project it to fourth. Trinity Leeds alone will create 3,000 new jobs. “The ‘Big Shopping Night Out’ is a unique way to enhance the experience for visitors”, said City Centre Manager, Cath Follin. “Individual retailers have put together an exciting calendar of events, offers and promotions throughout the weekend to demonstrate that Leeds is a premier retail destination.” The Leeds Loves Shopping Festival (Thursday 13th – Sunday 23rd October) returns for its sixth year with an action-packed late night shopping event on Thursday 13th October. This year the festival also features a series of business briefings and seminars, including a session showcasing the new retail developments in Leeds, highlighting the importance of the city’s retail sector. The Big Shopping Night Out The ‘Big Shopping Night Out’ on 13th gives visitors to Leeds the opportunity not only to take advantage of late night opening, but also to join in events and benefit from offers across

the city centre. Over 100 retailers will be involved, including TopShop, Zara, Primark and House of Fraser. Enjoy street performances around Briggate, win prizes and take in the fabulous Shopping Affair in the Victoria Quarter – this year’s theme is pirates! Individual retailers have also put together an exciting calendar of events, offers and promotions over the weekend.

Leeds Loves Shopping is just one of the festivals hosted by Leeds to celebrate the city’s diverse offerings, and follows fast on the heels of the successful Leeds Loves Food, which attracted 40,000 visitors to Millennium Square and other city venues for a weekend of food and drink in July. Leeds Loves Shopping is organised by Marketing Leeds and Leeds City Council’s City Centre Management and is supported by the Leeds Retail Association, city colleges and retailers.

On Saturday 15th October, Leeds Loves Shopping celebrates independent retail – customers who purchase from independent shops will be able to claim a spot prize from Capital FM’s bus on Briggate. Plus, there will be a

WIN FAMILY TICKETS FOR PLAYHOUSE’S FABULOUS CHRISTMAS SHOWS! We had a word with The West Yorkshire Playhouse and they have agreed to run a competition giving our readers the opportunity to win a Family Ticket (two adults and two children), plus dinner at The Playhouse (two courses and a glass of wine/juice), for either Annie or Jack and The Beanstalk. This is the first new UK production of Annie (suitable for age 7+) for a decade and, with the same team behind it as last year’s critically acclaimed A Christmas Carol, it promises to be a fantastic show. You can look forward to all the classic songs like It’s A Hard Knock Life, Tomorrow, Little Girls and Fully Dressed. Annie and her band of orphans take charge of the Quarry stage from Monday 21st November – Saturday 21st January 2012, eternally optimistic that the sun will come out tomorrow. Award-winning playwright Mike Kenny, Gail McIntryre and Barney George add more than a little magic to Christmas for the Playhouse’s smallest, but most discerning, audience members (age 4+) with their version of Jack and The Beanstalk. With a twist in its tale, you can bet that this will be no ordinary Jack, no ordinary beanstalk, no ordinary farm and certainly no ordinary animals! Beautiful, harp-playing Pearl, owner of some music-loving chickens, is taken by a giant to live in the clouds and they have to get her back....then the fun begins! This fun show runs from Friday 9th December – Saturday 21st January.

To win a Family Ticket for Annie, all you have to do is complete the following line: The Sun Will Come Out......... To win a Family Ticket and dinner for Jack and The Beanstalk, just name the harp-playing girl. Email your answers to wypcomp@wyp.org.uk by Monday 31st October, including your contact details and stating clearly which show you would like a Family Ticket to.

Guiseley Lions Tear into New Season with Great Form Following on from their successful first season in the Blue Square Bet North division, Guiseley Lions AFC have carried on where they left off and are now sitting third in the division after eight games. The Lions have not let up since their heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to AFC Telford back in the Blue Square North play-off final in May and have notched up six wins, a draw and a loss thus far in the new campaign. They also have one of the best goal differences in the division, having scored 18 and let in just five. Many of the goals have been scored at home and have accompanied entertaining passing football which has drawn increased crowds, including 522 in their recent 4-1 demolition of Vauxhall Motors. It seems that many are responding to the reasonable £10 admission and are certainly getting plenty of bang for their buck. Manager Steve Kittrick is confident that his side will perform this season, saying: “We’ve had a good start,

New Control Vehicle for Fell Rescue Team The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team now has a brand new Incident Control Vehicle packed with stateof-the-art communications. It took over four years, and a lot of hard work from team members and their partners, to raise the required funds – which had to be in addition to the £35,000 needed just to keep the team going. The detailed specification for both the vehicle and the sophisticated communications equipment needed for the team’s demanding rescue work in the Dales took months to prepare. It includes a 40 foot electronic mast that extends at the touch of a button – a major advance 34 October 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk

on manhandling an antenna against the elements! The vehicle also needed to be able to transport up to four control and communications team members. “The old trailer was 30 years old and just had a couple of radios and no heating!” said Transport Officer Mike Brown. “It was pretty grim in winter and, as it only had room for one person, discussions with our controllers, the police and other key personnel had to done outside. We had to make it work but it was hard going. We are thrilled with our new vehicle. It has given us a real boost.” The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team, based in Grassington, is the third oldest team in the country and consists of over 80 highly trained

volunteers who are on call 365 days a year. In their 63 years of service they have never failed to provide a team when asked. Last year they handled over 40 call outs. They are one of only three teams in the country who perform both surface and underground rescues - all three are in the Yorkshire Dales. The team would like to thank the local people for their generosity in helping them to acquire this vehicle.

FEEL GOOD, LOOK GREAT!

THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE – A NATURAL SOLUTION TO PAIN RELIEF Are you putting up with pain? Is something aching all the time? Perhaps it stops you doing things you used to do? Or maybe you get stiff and sore from sitting at a desk all day or driving long distances for work?

sionals that my knee pain was just how it is, but after only a few sessions of the Bowen Technique with my therapist Rachael my knees are completely pain free. It’s changed my life and I can now walk further than I’ve been able to for years.” You can find out more about what the Bowen Technique can do for your quality of life by giving Rachael a call or visit www.complementarytherapistyorkshire.co.uk.

If the answer to any of the above is “yes”, then you may well be thinking that it’s “just how it is” or “just part of getting older” and “I’ve just got used to it”. It doesn’t have to be that way! Pain and stiffness are the body’s way of letting us know there’s a problem. The Bowen Technique is a therapy that offers a drug free way to try and resolve your problems by aiming to relieve tension, reduce pain and promote healing. What makes the technique such a good choice is that although it’s a bodywork therapy it’s extremely gentle; even the most painful joint or muscle can be treated, and it works on the whole body; vital for many as the root cause of pain is not always obvious. As a satisfied client says “I was told by two medical profes-
