WINTER OVERLANDING

ALL THINGS OVERLANDING

Winter overlanding can be a thrilling and rewarding experience Whether you're tackling snowy trails, camping in sub-zero temperatures, or just exploring frosty landscapes, preparation is key. Here are some essential tips and insights for winter overlanding enthusiasts, drawn from years of experience

EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE

Winter transforms ordinary trails into unique challenges. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can make even a basic gravel road an adventure With the right preparation, you can not only survive but thrive in these conditions

KEY TIPS FOR WINTER OVERLANDING

Winter transforms ordinary trails into unique challenges. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can make even a basic gravel road an adventure With the right preparation, you can not only survive but thrive in these conditions

Cold Weather Gear

Proper gear is the foundation of a successful winter adventure Here are some essentials:

Diesel Heaters: Unlike propane heaters, diesel heaters provide warm, dry air without adding condensation. They're efficient, safe, and can keep your tent toasty even in extreme cold

Clothing: Invest in quality gear, including insulated pants, wool socks, and waterproof boots Layering is essential for warmth and flexibility. A heated jacket can also be a game-changer for staying comfortable around camp.

Boots and Accessories: Waterproof, insulated boots with excellent traction are a must Don’t forget gloves, hats, and extra layers to stay dry and warm

Vehicle Preparation

Your vehicle's readiness can make or break your trip: Tires: Winter and all-terrain tires are crucial for traction on snow and ice Airing down your tires improves grip and can help prevent getting stuck.

Recovery Gear: Always carry essentials like D-rings, soft shackles, kinetic ropes, and a winch These tools can be lifesavers in deep snow or icy conditions

Safe Driving Practices: Snow can conceal hazards like rocks or stumps Drive cautiously, especially on unfamiliar trails. Keep recovery gear easily accessible and travel with a buddy whenever possible.

Camping Comfort

Winter camping is all about staying warm and dry: Drying Gear: A diesel heater not only keeps you warm but also helps dry wet clothing and boots overnight.

Efficient Packing: Bring extra clothes, blankets, and emergency supplies Keep electronics charged and use the day’s driving to dry out gear and replenish batterypowered equipment

Destinations Worth Exploring

For Midwest overlanders, Wisconsin and Michigan offer some of the best winter trails Manistee National Forest in Michigan and the Nicolet-Chequamegon National Forest in Wisconsin are prime spots for snowy adventures If you're located elsewhere, look for areas with reliable snow coverage and scenic winter landscapes.

Safety First

Winter conditions can be unpredictable Check the weather, stay aware of road conditions, and always err on the side of caution. Driving slowly and remaining vigilant can help you avoid accidents. Travel with friends when possible and ensure your gear is prepared for emergencies

Final Thoughts

Winter overlanding opens up a world of possibilities It’s an opportunity to experience nature in a completely different way, away from the crowds and the heat of summer With the right preparation, winter adventures can be some of the most memorable of your overlanding journey.

GATEKEEPING THE U.P.

Social media groups are full of discussions and accusations of gatekeeping when one party feels like they are not getting traction in their requests for locations and trail info

“Gatekeeping isn’t necessarily bad It helps ensure that special spots remain clean and taken care of, preserving them for our future Just look at what happened to paradise point near Christmas. An excellent camp area shut down due to the wrong people finding it,” states Derek V of Mitten State Tours. We recently witnessed a different kind of gatekeeping in a discussion in Michgan Overland regarding overlanding and camping in the U P in the winter This is also a kind of gatekeeping we can get behind, and we want to explain why

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a paradise for off-road enthusiasts when the season is right However, as winter blankets the region in deep snow, attempting to traverse offroad trails becomes not only impractical but also potentially dangerous Even experienced off-roaders and locals avoid these trails until after the spring melt. If you're considering a winter overlanding trip in the U.P., here’s why you should think twice In the end, this isn’t really gatekeeping, it is a fair warning to those unfamiliar with the sort of weather and snow conditions that many just have not experienced

SNOW DEPTH IS A GAME-CHANGER

Many people from non-snow regions often don’t realize what it means to have literally feet of snow on the ground Even heavily modified off-road vehicles with 37- or 40-inch tires, front and rear lockers, and experienced drivers struggle to make progress Snow wheeling is an extreme sport, and it is not for those simply looking to take in the scenery. For overlanders accustomed to dirt roads and scenic backcountry routes, winter in the U P is a whole different level of challenge one that most are not prepared for

According to Visit Keweenaw, “The Keweenaw Snow Gauge is an iconic destination for travelers visiting the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This life-sized snow gauge shows the Keweenaw's record snowfall that was set during the winter of 1978-79 During that winter, the Keweenaw received 390 4 inches of snow between November and April ” Epic indeed

PHYSICS AND WEATHER MATTER

Even if some trails technically allow access, winter conditions dictate what is actually possible. The deep snow, changing temperatures, and unpredictable storms can quickly turn an off-road adventure into a rescue situation Soft snow can swallow vehicles whole, and self-recovery becomes nearly impossible without the right equipment and experience When winter takes hold, it’s not about what’s legal it’s about what’s physically possible, and the weather always wins.

WINTER IS FOR SNOWMOBILES

Snowmobiling is a major contributor to local economies, and clubs invest significant time and money into keeping those routes in top shape When off-roaders attempt to push through, even if they are just crossing a snowmobile trail, they risk damaging trails that aren’t meant for vehicle traffic This can create dangerous conditions and disrupt an industry that many local businesses rely on to get through the winter.

EVEN LOCALS STAY OFF THE TRAILS

If the people who live in the U P avoid these trails in winter, that should say something Even those familiar with the terrain and accustomed to harsh conditions wait until after the spring melt before venturing back into the backcountry When locals who know the trails better than anyone choose to stay off them, it’s a clear sign that winter wheeling in the U P just isn’t a good idea

THE VERDICT: STAY OFF THE TRAILS UNTIL SPRING

While winter off-roading may seem like an exciting challenge, the reality of the U P ’s extreme conditions makes it a bad idea for even the most experienced snow wheelers with highly capable rigs For those looking for winter adventure, there are plenty of safer and more responsible ways to enjoy the season, from snowmobiling to snowshoeing or simply taking in the stunning winter landscapes from an accessible route The best time for overlanding in the U P is after the snow has melted when the trails are open, safe, and ready for exploration

POLAR BEAR CAMPING CLUB

Let's talk about this POLAR BEAR CAMPING CLUB (PBCC)

We at Owens Overland attend the first 4 events in 2023-2045 and are currently participating in the 2nd annual one for 20242025 Jennifer Owens and I enjoy the events and the host that help with each camp out event Each camp is held in 1 of 4 states, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas Most camps have been in different places each year with the exception of Kansas as it's held at the grounds of Big Brutus. The PBCC is mostly put together by Lee Odom and Ryno Each camp location has a sponsor or host that is local to that state There are games for kids and adults such as corn hole and scavenger hunts and cook off tournaments to get in on the action to test your camp cooking skills. The host even takes the time to scout out trails before the event for those that would like to just get out and test their rigs or just explore All this happens from Friday all the way till the patches are handed out on Sunday morning when everyone begins to pack up and load up to head out to home or their next destination till the next event. My self and wife and kids and pets love these events as we get to visit with others and have fun and with it being in the winter months, we hope for snow and enjoy the camping experience with like minded families and campers

WHY YOU SHOULD BUILD YOUR OWN

FIRST AID KIT

These days, it is pretty common knowledge that you should take some level of first aid kit with you when you are out adventuring. And there are some companies out there that sell some amazing premade kits for you to buy. But if you give me a couple of minutes, I’ll explain why you should consider building your own first aid kit

SPREADING OUT THE COST

No one is likely to confuse overlanding with a “budget” hobby, but none of us is made of money and will try to find ways to save a little here and there when we can. Quality medical gear, like any other quality gear, isn’t cheap. And it’s even harder to stomach spending money on good gear, that you hope you’ll never have a reason to use Buying a full featured first aid kit from a reputable supplier can start around $100 and can easily be double or even triple that If that’s a little hard to swallow, then you can easily spread it out by buying piece or two every payday.

CUSTOMIZATION

Another advantage of buying your own kit is that you get to customize not only what is in the kit, but how it is carried A good all-around kit for going out on adventures should have equipment to deal with bleeding, airway issues, and broken limbs just for some examples. There are multiple ways and types of equipment to deal with all those issues.

If you look at tourniquets, for example, the only real requirement is that you want one that is approved by the Council on Tactical Combat Casualty Care That gives you 8 different tourniquets to pick from, that all vary in price and functionality, but are all high-quality lifesaving equipment. Another great example is the materials needed for wound packing Your most likely choices are between QuikClot and regular packing gauze While QuikClot is the gold standard for wound packing, it is also over $40 and must be replaced occasionally sue to it expiring. Compare this to regular packing gauze that is about the price of a cup of coffee, does not expire, and studies show it to be about 90% as effective If you were building your own kit, you decide which is the better choice for you Or maybe get the packing gauze to start with you so you have something, and then upgrade to QuikClot down the road.

“TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR SITUATION, DETERMINE THE BEST WAY TO CARRY YOUR MEDICAL SUPPLIES, AND THEN FIND THE SOLUTION THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU.”

The other customization option to consider is, how are you going to carry all this medical gear? The methods for carrying your gear are only limited by your imagination In my 4Runner, I have all my immediate lifesaving equipment (my trauma kit) in a red pouch that attaches to my passenger headrest with Velcro, alternatively, my general first aid kit rides in my drawer system in a plastic ammo can. Take a look at your situation, determine the best way to carry your medical supplies, and then find the solution that works best for you, not whatever the kit you could have bought just comes in

KNOW YOUR GEAR

My final reason that you should consider building your own first aid kit is so that you will carry what you know how to use and know how to use what you carry There are multiple awesome tourniquets out there, but I have almost 20 years of experience with the CAT Tourniquet so that’s what I choose to have in my kit. I encourage you to buy duplicates of the gear you will carry so that you can have a practice set. That way you can refresh yourself on what you are carrying and how it works, just like you might do with recovery gear before a big trip, or hopefully at least once a year

“ALL THE GEAR IN THE WORLD WON’T HELP SOMEONE IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO USE IT.”

Some others will tell you to carry gear more advanced than what you know how to use, in case someone with more training comes along and can utilize it to save you If you have the extra money and space in your vehicle it can’t hurt, but most of us overland in places that are remote enough that the chances of someone showing up to help is low. I would much rather you spend the money you would have spent on gear you don’t know how to use, on more training

GET TRAINING AND BUY QUALITY

No matter what you decide, buy a kit or build one, make sure that first you get some training All the gear in the world won’t help someone if you don’t know how to use it There are multiple ways to get training. The easiest is look for a local Red Cross First Aid Course, or even better would be a “Stop the Bleed” course If you attend any of the big overland events, they usually have a first aid courses available for free

finally, medical gear is not where you want too cheap out. When someone’s life or limb is on the line you really want quality gear There are lots of fakes and knockoffs on Amazon so I encourage you to buy from reputable suppliers like TacMed Solutions, Dark Angel Medical, or Medical Points Abroad

With all of that said, consider building your own first aid kit instead of buying a kit and stuffing it in the back of your vehicle I hope to see you out on the trail or at an event, and remember, sometimes you have to go out and get lost, before you can find yourself

Rob Kroupa runs Stormcrow Overland, which offers overland training and is starting to produce overland related soft goods. He is currently a Meteorologist for the DoD and is an USAF veteran and lives near Oklahoma City He spends his free time traveling with his

family, organizing events for OKC Overland, and attending overland events where he usually teaches First Aid classes In is spare time, Rob enjoys hiking, kayaking, occasionally making a youtube video, and generally just looking for an excuse not to wear shoes."

Camping at MOORE Expo

The best way to experience all that this community has to offer. Immerse yourself in incredible late night campfire conversations, enjoy the smell of delicious breakfast cooking in the morning, and borrow a cup of coffee from your neighbor. If you choose to camp with us, you can set up your site, spend all day relaxing, have a little home base right next door to all the action, watch the moon rise over the horizon, and get to walk “home” after a long day at the expo. Then wake up and do it all again, maybe meeting new friends at the VIP after-hours parties, if you’re all about that late night party. So yeah. We like camping. If you do too, this may be the way to go.

DO YOUR PART TO PROTECT THE FUN AND ADVENTURE

Winter in Michigan's Lower Peninsula can be notoriously unpredictable, often lacking the consistent snowfall we crave However, the Upper Peninsula paints a different picture, transforming into a winter wonderland most years

For snowmobilers, the Upper Peninsula is truly a paradise Imagine miles of meticulously groomed trails snaking through pristine forests, breathtaking scenery unfolding at every turn, and the exhilarating freedom of exploring the vast, snow-covered wilderness It's an outdoor enthusiast's dream come true

Stacey and I, eager for adventure, loaded up our snowmobiles and embarked on an eight-hour journey from home. We opted for a small motel in Munising, Michigan, a last-minute decision, but the allure of the Upper Peninsula's winter magic was too strong to resist The drive itself was a breathtaking experience Towering pine trees stood draped in snow, glistening frozen lakes mirrored the serene winter sky, and breathtaking vistas unfolded at every bend in the road. Crossing the iconic Mackinac Bridge, always a memorable experience, seemed even more majestic against the backdrop of the winter landscape

After checking into the Superior Motel & Suites, we were directed to park our SUV and snowmobile trailer across the street. Unfamiliar with the area and with fresh snow blanketing the ground, I drove across the street to what I assumed was an empty parking lot To my dismay, it turned out to be a deceptively disguised retention swamp Our allwheel-drive SUV, though fancy, was no match for the snow depths I tried to reverse, but the tires spun helplessly, sinking deeper with each attempt Panic began to set in as I realized I was stuck.

First, I tried digging myself out, but the snow was too deep Next, I attempted to lighten the load by removing the snowmobiles from the trailer, but that didn't help Finally, I walked to the nearby grocery store, hoping to find someone with a truck who could pull me out.

An older gentleman, after a brief hesitation, agreed to help –for a case of beer, of course! Well worth it, I thought With the assistance of his powerful diesel truck and a sturdy tow strap, we successfully extricated the SUV Chastened by the experience, I parked in the designated area with more caution. This is one of those times when it's all done. You wish you had gotten the camera out for future laughs I didn't so no embarrassing picture, LOL

DAY ONE

Our first day was dedicated to a thrilling snowmobile ride to Tahquamenon Falls, a scenic destination about 80 miles from our motel The journey itself was a highlight Leaving Munising, we embarked on Trail UP419, which merged onto UP8, leading us east This route offered a captivating mix of terrain: we navigated through valleys between rolling hills, crossed picturesque swamps, followed the winding course of rivers, and even enjoyed glimpses of the majestic Lake Superior shoreline Continuing on UP8, we made a southward turn and arrived just west of the charming town of Paradise Here, we refueled our snowmobiles and enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Berry Patch restaurant

Back on Trail UP45, we headed west towards Tahquamenon Falls, a sight I'd admired many times during summer and autumn Witnessing the falls in winter, partially frozen with intricate ice formations cascading down the river, was truly awe-inspiring We spent some time exploring both the upper and lower falls before continuing our journey.

The southern section of UP45 traversed a flatter landscape, yet it still offered breathtaking views of vast swamps and dense forests We then transitioned onto Trail UP9, heading northwest, followed by UP431 and UP443 As we entered a more mountainous region, the trails became more challenging, with numerous twists and turns. Finally, we connected to UP88, which eventually led us back to UP8 and finally back to UP419, bringing us full circle

One of the unique aspects of snowmobiling in the Upper Peninsula is the ability to ride directly into many towns. We enjoyed dinner at the Dogpatch, a local favorite, before returning to the motel, exhausted but exhilarated from a long day of riding

DAY TWO

On our second day, we ventured to the captivating Eben Ice Caves, also known as the Rock River Canyon Ice Caves A major perk for snowmobilers - we were able to ride straight to the trailhead! For those arriving by car, be prepared for a longish walk from the parking area through a farmer's field before reaching the official trailhead. The ice caves themselves are just over a half-mile hike in, but trust me, it's worth the trek I highly recommend having some form of ice cleats or Yaktrax for this adventure, as the trail can get quite icy The popularity of these caves speaks for itself - the entire path is basically pure ice! There are multiple ice caves to explore, and a thorough exploration can take several hours. Make sure you allocate enough time to fully appreciate this winter wonderland This truly ranks as one of the coolest experiences you can have in Michigan during the winter!

“WITNESSING THE FALLS IN WINTER, PARTIALLY FROZEN WITH INTRICATE ICE FORMATIONS CASCADING DOWN THE RIVER, WAS TRULY AWE-INSPIRING.”

DAY THREE

We started our third day with a delightful breakfast at what I consider to be the best bagel shop in the world (though sadly, it has since closed) Fueled up and ready to explore, we headed back onto Trail UP419, then connected to UP8 and finally onto UP422, which leads towards the stunning Pictured Rocks area.

A highlight of this route is the ability to snowmobile directly to the Miner Castle lookout point, offering breathtaking panoramic views

We then cut across Van Meer Road and rejoined Trail UP8. The southern section of UP8 is undeniably one of the most scenic stretches of the entire trip We were eager to revisit this beautiful portion of the trail

Following the winding trails, we made our way towards Manistique. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that the trail passed directly by Kitch-iti-Kipi, a renowned spring, and regretted not stopping to see it

“AS THE SUN BEGAN TO SET, THE SKY ERUPTED IN A BREATHTAKING DISPLAY OF ORANGE HUES, PAINTING THE FOREST IN A WARM, ETHEREAL GLOW.”

de back to the motel was truly spectacular As the sun to set, the sky erupted in a breathtaking display of e hues, painting the forest in a warm, ethereal glow tunately, capturing the beauty of this sunset in photos fully bundled up in snowmobile gear proved to be challenging.

after nightfall, the ride back was exhilarating The ty of oncoming traffic allowed us to increase our speed y, adding an extra thrill to the journey

DAY FOUR

Day 4 brought the bittersweet end to our snowmobiling adventure After a leisurely breakfast, we packed up the SUV and trailer, preparing for the eight-hour drive back home

Even though we were leaving, the beauty of the Upper Peninsula continued to captivate us. The eastern side of the U P was blanketed in a fresh snowfall, creating a truly magical winter wonderland Crossing the iconic Mackinac Bridge again was an awe-inspiring experience Every trip to the Upper Peninsula seems to hold a unique magic Perhaps it's the thrill of escaping our everyday routines and embarking on a fun-filled adventure. Or maybe, as the locals jokingly say, the Mackinac Bridge somehow shields the true beauty of the U P from those "Trolls" (a playful term for those from the Lower Peninsula)

Overall, this was an incredible trip filled with breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and about 500 miles of exhilarating snowmobile trails

ANGE TO

As summer takes hold in the Northern Rockies, a gathering of vehicle-assisted adventure travelers will converge at Swenson Butte Ranch for the Range to Ranch Retreat Nestled between the rugged Sawtooth Mountains and the Lost River Range, this event offers a blend of off-road exploration, community connection, and outdoor adventure in one of Idaho’s most scenic landscapes

RANCH RETREAT

To drive through the Lost River Valley is an experience unlike any other, I was captivated by the water color-like quality of some of the slopes, and the rugged peaks towering over a flat, wide plain “The Lost River Range is a massive desert fault block range that holds the highest peaks in Idaho Rising a vertical mile from the valleys on either side, the range is primitive and little explored Most of the mountaineering and hiking interest in the Lost Rivers is focused on Borah Peak, high point of Idaho, leaving the rest of the range a parched wilderness of steep terrain, talus fields, and deep canyons.”

You may ask how I decide what locations to host overland bascamp events and the answer is simple I want to gather with those weird “overlanders” in beautiful, unique, remote locations. Boy does this fit the agenda When I got a call from Noah and learned that he wanted to host an overland gathering here, it was like the universe was giving me a sign

Fast forward to today, our dream is becoming a reality The Range to Ranch Retreat ticket sale is underway, and the excitement is palpable Tents will be pitched, campfires will crackle, and people from all walks of life will gather to share their love for adventure and exploration

Each day will bring a new opportunity to discover the wonders of this hidden gem Trails beckon the intrepid to venture deeper into the wilderness, where stunning vistas await at every turn. Workshops and clinics offer the chance to learn new skills or refine old ones, all while making lifelong connections with fellow enthusiasts

In the evenings, stories of the day's adventures will be shared over hearty meals, and laughter with the starry skies above. It's a time to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with nature and community

As the sun sets behind the majestic peaks, there is a profound sense of gratitude for the beauty and solitude of this remarkable place The Range to Ranch Retreat is more than an event; it’s a celebration of the spirit of adventure and the joy of coming together in one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth
