As you turn onto State Route 715, you ll encounter the Red River Gorge Geological Area Here, you can discover the spectacular rock features, including sandstone arches and towering cliffs that attract thousands of viewers each year Here, visitors can enjoy year round hiking, camping, canoeing, and wildlife viewing alongside other recreational activities Just a few bends from the Red River Gorge Geological Area, you’ll find the Gladie Visitor Center, where you can learn about the cultural heritage, unique resources and spectacular geology found within the boundaries of the Red River Gorge Geological Area and Clifty Wilderness Climb up to the Sky Bridge, a great place to stop for a picnic

The byway then continues to wind through the Kentucky mountains Follow State Route 402 up to Slade before traveling south on State Route 11 to Zahariah There are many options to stop and hike along the way. While in Zachariah check out the natural beauty of the Torrent Falls and try out an old Italian climbing style, the Via Ferrata, to get a new view of the falls While in Zarachiah, stop at a local restaurant for some farm to table fare

The route begins in Stanton on State Highway 11 and heads east Instead of continuing straight on State Highway 11, visitors will make a loop following the Red River using State Highways 77, 715, and 402 before rejoining State Highway 11 The route follows State Highway 11 until its termination point in Zachariah

MAKING GOOD ON A COMMITMENT CONVOY ETIQUETTE

1. Pre-Trip Planning

When traveling in a convoy of off-road 4x4 vehicles, it's important to follow basic etiquette to ensure safety, efficiency, and a positive experience for everyone involved. Here are some key points to consider:

Communication: Establish a group chat or use radios for communication during the trip Meeting Points: Decide on a specific meeting point and time to avoid delays.

2 Formation and Spacing

Adequate Spacing: Keep a safe distance between vehicles to allow for adequate reaction time in case of obstacles or emergencies Dont leave the vehicle behind you behind! Its ok to wait

3. Pace and Speed

Consistent Pace: Set a comfortable pace that accommodates the slowest vehicle

Signal Changes: Use hand signals or radios to indicate turns, stops, or speed changes

4. Trail Etiquette

Right of Way: Yield to larger vehicles or those in a more precarious position If you encounter oncoming traffic, the vehicle going uphill typically has the right of way.

Stay on Trails: Stick to designated trails to minimize impact and avoid getting lost

5 Obstacles and Recovery

Assist When Needed: Be prepared to help fellow convoy members with any difficulties, such as getting stuck or needing repairs

Clear Communication: If you encounter an obstacle, communicate clearly about the best approach and ensure everyone is aware of any potential hazards

6 Breaks and Stops

Regular Breaks: Schedule regular breaks for food, fuel, and rest, ensuring everyone stays hydrated and alert.

Group Gatherings: When stopping, gather to discuss the next leg of the journey or any concerns

7 Tread Lightly

Pack Out Trash: Ensure that everyone in the group packs out all trash and waste

Respect Nature: Stay on marked paths and respect wildlife and vegetation

8. Emergency Procedures

Emergency Contacts: Share emergency contact information and agree on a plan in case someone gets lost or injured

First Aid Kit: Make sure someone has a first aid kit and knows how to use it

9. Respect Local Regulations

Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations regarding off-roading, including permits, speed limits, and designated areas

10. Have Fun!

Enjoy the Experience: Keep the atmosphere positive, encourage camaraderie, and make sure everyone has a great time!

By following these basic convoy etiquette guidelines, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable offroading experience for everyone involved
