OVERLAND EVOLUTION

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year! In this issue, we look back a bit with a recap of favorite events and expos of 2024 by Justin Sturgill of Misplaced Overland, a recap of the Wisconsin Overland Xmas Tree Hunt, and a review of 2024 Northology Events. A look forward into 2025 brings us to the Chicago Auto Show’s new overland-focused space, some public lands locations in the Midwest you should visit and an answer to the question “what do you wish you had known before getting into overlanding” by members of the Newbie Overlander facebook group.

While we are on that subject... New Year, new me, right? I always like to use this time of year as an excuse to freshen up the visual presentation of the magazine a bit and give it a slight facelift. Hope you appreciate the little changes! One thing I would like to see in the new year is more content by community members and more discussion of magazine topics continued in the Northology Adventures facebook group. A semiregular contributor, Lee Meadows, had the idea to continue the convo on articles in the group for a more interactive experience surrounding the subjects presented. Feel free to share your thoughts on articles or to just give us some feedback or suggestions so we can continue to craft this publication in a meaningful way.

Embarking on an adventure-themed New Year's resolution can be an fun way to plan the year ahead with a spirit of exploration and discovery. Here are some ideas to inspire your adventurous resolutions: Explore Uncharted Territories: Commit to visiting a new place each month, whether it's a nearby park or a new state or country. This will not only satisfy your wanderlust but also broaden your perspective and understanding of different cultures. Try a New Outdoor Activity: Whether it's rock climbing, kayaking, or trail running, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and try something that gets your adrenaline pumping. Plan a Solo Adventure: Experience the thrill of independence by planning a solo trip. This can help build confidence, self-reliance, and a deeper connection with yourself. Document Your Journey: Start a travel blog, vlog, or journal to capture your experiences and share your adventures with others. You can also document your journey on the All Roads Taken app, This can be a creative outlet and a way to inspire fellow adventurers. Join a Community: Find a group of like-minded adventurers to join on excursions. This can lead to new friendships and shared experiences, making adventures even more memorable. We suggest the a local meetup, the Northology Community or Newbie Overanders groups on facebook, or the Northology Patreon Membership Community. Commit to Advocacy: Make a resolution to tread lightly on your adventures, and take an active role in supporting conservation efforts and promoting sustainability in the places you visit. We highly recommend joining Tread Lightly!, Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition and the Blue Ribbon Coalition to help the cause. By setting adventure-focused resolutions, you'll create a year filled with excitement, growth, and unforgettable experiences. Happy New Year!

OVERLAND EVOLUTION NEW PARTNERSHIPS AT THE With interest in the overland segment growing and many manufacturers building vehicles that cater to this adventurer lifestyle, The Chicago Auto Show dedicates space to this community. By: Jim Obrill

INSPIRATION What inspired the Chicago Auto Show to highlight overland travel as part of this year’s event, and what does it mean for attendees? “Auto Shows continue to evolve as events for consumers’ interest at the core. As an auto enthusiast myself, I am in tune with various trends across the industry and there’s been a spike in overlanding over the past several years. With that interest growing and many manufacturer building vehicles that cater to this adventurer lifestyle, we felt it was time to dedicate space to this community. This will give attendees something new to see at the show for 2025 and new vendors to engage with. We hope it will inspire new ways to use their vehicles. As a bonus, I’m personally interested in this space with my own Toyota 4Runner.”

“WITH THAT INTEREST GROWING AND MANY MANUFACTURER BUILDING VEHICLES THAT CATER TO THIS ADVENTURER LIFESTYLE, WE FELT IT WAS TIME TO DEDICATE SPACE TO THIS COMMUNITY.”

INTEGRATION 2025 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW FEB. 8-17, 2025 MCCORMICK PLACE 2301 S. KING DRIVE

How does the overland theme integrate with the broader focus of the show, and what specific features or displays can overlanding enthusiasts look forward to? Overlanding Chicago will be its own exhibit space within the show and will take up approximately 25,000 square feet of space. It will be themed to the outdoor lifestyle with vendors and manufacturers showcasing vehicles and accessories that align with overlanding. Enthusiasts can look forward to seeing some local consumer builds and new products ranging from vehicles to accessories.

INNOVATION “THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN THE FIRST YEAR IS GETTING VENDORS TO COME ON BOARD WITH A NEW CONCEPT.”

Have any automakers or brands introduced new vehicles or products at the show tailored specifically to the overland or adventure travel market? Many manufacturers are introducing vehicles that are tailored specific to this market with Toyota coming to mind specifically. Toyota has launched their Trailhunter versions of the Tacoma and the new 4Runner which will both be on display at the Chicago Auto Show. These are both sold from dealers ready for an overland adventure. Other manufacturers like Honda have recently introduced the 2026 Passport TrailSport which appears to be the most rugged Honda yet. And Subaru has plans to launch multiple global debut vehicles at this years show. Subaru is a brand that has always played in this space of adventure travel and showcases it at the auto show with its National Parks immersive exhibit every year. What challenges did the team face in creating an authentic overland travel vibe within the context of a traditional auto show? The biggest challenge in the first year is getting vendors to come on board with a new concept who have never been a part of the show before. We hope to continue to evolve this every year moving forward now that we have a base template started. It’s always hardest to sell an idea first. We need to get authentic brands to participate to be valid and tapping into the community with a group like Illinois Overlanders and partners at Toyota have helped make some connections.

EVOLUTION How do you see the overland travel trend influencing the automotive industry and future Chicago Auto Shows? I think we’ll continue to see more and more manufacturers offer special trims of existing vehicles that are more rugged and ready for the overland lifestyle. I predict more of them with partner with key accessory partners like Fox, ARB, Rigid, and other companies to offer products directly for their vehicles as part of packages. I hope to see Overlanding Chicago grow within the Chicago Auto Show and become a Midwest event for the community. There are other events such as Overland Expo on the East and West Coast, but currently not much in the Midwest.

INCLUSION Talk about how the inclusion of Illinois Overlanders happened and what benefits the group presence brings to the show. I met Maurice, the organizer of Illinois Overlanders many years ago after having Chi-Town 4x4’s in the Chicago Auto Show as a club. Following that, I joined him on a local trip to the Badlands Offroad Park and several other meetups. We don’t live far from each other and have maintained contact so when this idea started to come to life, I knew Illinois Overlanders had to be a part of it. It’s important to showcase local vehicles and consumer builds in a space like this. Consumers want to see what others are doing on their own, not just the ultimate dream vehicle built with unlimited funding.

NEW TO THE 2025 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW IS OVERLANDING CHICAGO: A SPACE ON THE SHOW FLOOR DEDICATED TO OVERLANDING AND OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE. OVERLANDING CHICAGO WILL DRAW A UNIQUE CROWD OF SHOW GOERS LOOKING TO EXPLORE A LIFE OUTSIDE THE URBAN JUNGLE WITH THEIR VEHICLES. WITH A FOCUS ON THE OVERLANDING LIFESTYLE, THE SPACE WILL FEATURE MANUFACTURER DISPLAYS OF SPECIALTY VEHICLES, UPFITTING VENDORS, OFF-ROAD ACCESSORIES, AND MUCH MORE.

1 Southeast Adventure Vehicle Expo (SAVE Expo)

2. Overland Expo West

The first event on our list is the SAVE Expo, which stands for Southeast Adventure Vehicle Expo. This event takes place in Stark, Florida, at the Florida International Rally and Motorsports Park, also known as The FIRM. It happens the first weekend in March every year and is close to both Ocala and Apalachicola National Forests.

Next on our list is Overland Expo. It was one of the very first Overland expos and remains a favorite of ours. This event takes place in Flagstaff, Arizona, at Fort Tuthill County Park. The area offers countless recreational opportunities. Overland Expo West features more than 400 exhibitors, hundreds of hours of educational programming, motorcycle demos, a Storyteller Pavilion, and an Overland Film Festival.

If you’re planning to stay for the weekend, the sprawling 420-acre venue offers weekend passes with camping options. Daily passes are also available. Some highlights of the SAVE Expo include an obstacle course, off-road trails, educational classes, and, of course, a vendor row. Over the years, we’ve watched this event grow steadily. It offers the size and features of an expo but retains the feel of a rally, making it a truly great community event for the Southeast— especially in Florida.

Weekend passes with camping are available, as well as daily passes for those hoping to experience everything in just one day. However, with so much to see, it can feel overwhelming. We recommend downloading the event app and making a plan if you’re searching for specific products or experiences. If possible, camping onsite for the weekend is highly recommended—it’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with other travelers and enthusiasts in the Overland community.

The rally draws some of the top travelers, instructors, and vendors in the Overland community. It’s an excellent opportunity for individuals, couples, families, and friends to learn new skills, meet vendors, make connections, and enjoy camping in the beautiful town of Plain, Washington.

3. Overland Adventure Summit The third event on our list is the Overland Adventure Summit, a brand-new event for 2024 hosted by SHW Off-Road and Commonwealth 4x4.

Weekend passes are available, with onsite camping in a large grassy field. For those not ready to camp, there are hotels nearby, and day passes are also available. Activities include classes, trail rides, an obstacle course staffed by skilled spotters, and vendor row. Each evening, attendees gather for giveaways and a guest speaker. This year, Patty Upton shared her incredible story on the last day. If you haven’t heard her story, we highly recommend looking it up.

This smaller event was held in Kentucky, near the Red River Gorge area, at the South Fork Campground just a few minutes from Slade, Kentucky. The inaugural event attracted 162 onsite campers, 150+ day passes, representatives from 22 states, 26 vendors, 17 hours of class time, and raised $2,500 for the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway. For those unfamiliar, the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB) is a moderately challenging highclearance route for street-legal 4WD vehicles. It utilizes historic county roads around the Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest, offering terrain that is one-third gravel, one-third trail, and one-third asphalt. Completing the route typically takes 1–2 days. The event also offered onsite training by Morrison’s Outdoor Adventures. Mike and his family provided excellent educational sessions, and their booth remained busy throughout the day. After-hours activities included a cornhole tournament, giveaways, and community gatherings. Though this was the smallest event we attended in 2024, it was incredibly rewarding to see so many people come together to support the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway. We’re already looking forward to the 2025 event!

4. Northwest Overland Rally The fourth event on our list is the Northwest Overland Rally, one of the oldest Overland rallies. This event takes place annually in Plain, Washington, typically in June, just before the Pacific Northwest Overland Expo.

5. Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat (KOAR) Finally, number five on our list is the Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat (KOAR). This event is set in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula, at the Trails End Campground near Copper Harbor. The Keweenaw Peninsula offers incredible recreational opportunities, including off-roading, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, and general exploration. KOAR features a vendor area that’s open for only a few hours each day, giving attendees and vendors plenty of time to explore the region. Each evening, the community gathers at the vendor area for spotlights and giveaways. On the final night, they light a massive bonfire, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. We are Justin and Michelle and we love the outdoors. Together we have spent most of our free time, vacations, weekends, etc. enjoying everything nature has to offer. Early on we spent weekends in a Sears tent and a couple used ATV’s exploring Michigans backwoods. We have cycled through many different camping setups, traveling to many states raising our kids in the process teaching them the love we have for this beautiful country we live in. Now as our family has grown older and we have found ourselves with a little more time, we are back at it and want to share our travels with you! So please come along with us as we adventure across America!

CAMP NORTHOLOGY AT MOORE EXPO 4/25-26

CLEANUP CAMPOUT FOR KORC 5/16-18

One of the most important jobs we have all year is as hosts of the camping experience at the MOORE Expo. We approached founder Chris Holloway a couple of years ago with our vision for improvements after the first camping experience run by the Ozark Empire Fair. Chris told the facility that we would be running the campground going forward, and we have been greeting, checking in and taking care of 400 campsite’s worth of happy MOORE Expo campers ever since.

This could easily be one of our favorite events due to it’s laid back atmosphere and small group vibe. 50% of the ticket sales go to KORC as a donation and in the past we have provided or arranged for live music, tours of Open Skies Project, the Delaware Mine and an awesome boat ride with Keweenaw Boat Tours. In 2023 we were treated to an amazing aurora display.

Improvements over the years have included smoother check-in, better layouts, camper swag bags, evening gatherings around the campfire and golf cart shuttles for attendees. As an added bonus for 2025 Camp Northology swag bag sponsors, they will be listed on an Adventure Passport. Attendees who collect all the stamps by visiting the sponsor booth’s will be entered in a drawing for prizes at the end of the weekend.

Redridge Industries is back as sponsor for 2025 and we appreciate the local support. We are looking into a fun new activity to participate in after the cleanup and by the feedback we got this past year, a taco bar/ potlock is back on the menu for dinner on Saturday (and praying for no rain!) We are so touched that folks join us to clean up Copper Harbor area trails and in 2024, and we directly donated almost $1000 to KORC on behalf of our sponsors and attendees in 2024.

MIDWEST WOMEN’S OFFROAD WEEKEND

SUMMER ADVENTURE CAMP

For the past three years we have hosted dozens of women from all over the country for a few days of learning, friendship and trail riding in northern Wisconsin. Offroad and and 4x4 trainers and content creators such as Keri Porter of Discover 4x4 Adventures, Katie Abraham of Ironman 4x4 and Cara McClellan of Ozark Overland Adventures are just a few of the fantastic role models, instructors and mentors who have brought their love of off-road activities and nurturing women’s growth in the genre.

For the last four years, we have hosted a Father’s Day adventure campout with the help from our friends at True North Outpost in Norway, Michigan. The upper peninsula gathering has included whitewater rafting, trail rides, live music, rustic camping and some super cool giveaways and swag.

This past year we introduced hands-on learning stations for tire repair, jacking your vehicle, pet trauma response, a Stop the Bleed class and more. We aim to expand the learning and continue to invite veterans and newbies alike to join us.

In 2025, True North Outpost is hosting a summer adventure festival on Father’s Day Weekend and we are so stoked to bring everyone up to celebrate all things outdoors with our TNO friends. Watch their website for details. Rumor has it there will be specials on whitewater rafting, duckie trips, canoeing, mountain biking, and live music and vendors at the outpost. You just gotta come up for this one!

RANGE TO RANCH RETREAT Last summer, we fell in love with Idaho and when presented with a collab opportunity on an adventure event with Spokane Creative at Swenson Butte Ranch, it was easy to say yes. This may be our most stunning location yet! Basecamp will be in a valley with stunning views of the Lost River Range and Idaho’s tallest peaks. You can explore the mountains and go hiking, fly fishing, whitewater rafting, moto touring and mountain biking. There will be a bevy of hand-picked overland and offroad gear vendors onsite as well as food and beverage options. You can also expect some amazing giveaways and epic stories shared around the campfire at gatherings each night. Make sure you are signed up for your free subscription to this magazine for updates when tickets go on sale later this month.

FREE ADV WEEKEND

OVERLAND THE RED

This one is special to us. We host a camping and trail riding weekend for all of our patreon community members, absolutely free. You heard that right. Free for all members and immediate family. This is a relaxing, chill campout and in addition to camp swag and giveaways, we provide Chad’s world-famous pulled pork sandwiches for the Saturday night potluck. There are no big changes in store for 2025, but you should bring your kayak, mountain bike and appetite for fun and trail riding!

It has been so fun to grow this event, and it has taken on a life of its own. Thanks to title sponsor, Dan Cummins Auto Group,we have been able to raise funds for the Daniel Boone Backcountry byway with an amazing grand prize package valued at over $3000. In addition to the other amazing sponsors and vendors, we had close to $8K in prizes given away in 2024. We also added live music and the Creator’s Camp in 2024 which will return for the new year. Being in the Red River Gorge in the fall is such a treat, and the scenery on the DBBB trails and surrounding area is just breathtaking. Can’t wait to see you in the gorge in October!

KEWEENAW OVERLAND ADVENTURE RETREAT The original Northology basecamp event. Set in the stunning Keweenaw Peninsula is a community gathering that just VIBES. In 2024 we added tours of the Delaware Mine and Open Skies Project to the agenda and welcomed back One Human Band for live music during the Saturday night send-off mega bonfire. Looking to 2025, we want to develop more local partnerships and basecamp actvities. TCTeardrops is returning as Title Sponsor and will be working with them on MotoKOAR and an RC course. The seaplane tours, KORC cleanup and gear swap will return and we are working on bringing other neat additions.

TREAD LIGHTLY! NATIONAL FOREST CLEANUP For the second year, we co-hosted a cleanup with Wisconsin Overland with a grant from the BFGoodrich Outstanding Trails program with the support of Tread Lightly! It is obvious that our work here is not done and will be scheduling another cleanup event in late fall. This past year, we were able to camp free at Bear Lake Campground thanks to the Laona Forest Ranger office and collected a HUGE dumpster full of trash. Thanks to sponsors TCTeardrops and Slap Bang Bagel for your support!

A little fun at Wolf River Roots before taking off.

The sixth annual Wisconsin Overland Xmas Tree Hunt was held this past December and in addition to the campout and trail ride, some of us actually chopped down christmas trees for a change! After grabbing some delicious coffee at Wolf River Roots, we settled in for a quick driver’s meeting and gave away some prizes.

It’s always fun to have the pups along!

WHAT I WISH I

KNEW BACK THEN

WE ASKED NEWBIE OVERLANDER GROUP MEMBERS WHAT THEY WISH THEY HAD KNOWN WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED GETTING INTO OVERLANDING AND VEHICLE-ASSISTED ADVENTURE TRAVEL.

“Don't buy every piece of equipment that people suggest. Start with the minimum, the basics, and do some practicing. Find out what you need and buy that. Everybody's needs and styles are different. I say, by the second one first, but it's not easy because you don't know when you're just starting out.” -Dan Hegstad

“Whether it's camping gear or vehicle accessories, wait until you find a problem with what you have, and then figure what you need to add or change to solve that problem. Don't spend money on gear or modifications that you don't need when you could be spending that money to actually travel.” -Rob Kroupa

“I didn’t know how to find or get to some of these amazing camping spots. Thanks to the OnX Offroad app, I can see where I can go without being on private property.” -Jared Pace

“THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO DO IT AND FINDING WHAT MAKES YOUR LIFE EASIER IS THE WAY YOU SHOULD BE PURSUING THE HOBBY/LIFESTYLE.” -ADAM RUBIN

“Its all a big advertisement. Slow down with purchasing. Make sure youre getting what you need, not what is the latest thing. Make sure youre making large investments with the future in mind, dont buy too small or too large.” -Bill Warwick “The money that hubby spends on gear.” -Teresa Nelson “That my daughter thinks I have an addiction now that I am building out my dream...I would like to have my Tacoma finished when I retire so I can travel and overland full time.” -Stephanie King

“Just do it for awhile with the ground tent!” -Jen Banks “How addicting it is! And how many great people we would meet. Its been a pleasant surprise. (I also agree with what everyone is saying about start slow. Buy practical and only what you need.)” -Jill Carr “You just need a vehicle, shelter, food and water...” -David Rewey

“Make a list and take what you think you need to a nearby state park type campground. Make a second list while you're camping of what you wished you had with you. Keep refining those lists and you'll soon have everything you really need and nothing you don't.” -Jim Caldwell “Think minimalist.” -Dolan Smith “How obsessed you can become with the peacefulness of nature. I find myself constantly staring out my work window ready for my next adventure. And definitely learning to take my time with building up my vehicle to my needs instead of trying to look like everyone else's vehicles I've come across in the past 3 years. It's been a slow process but it has taught me patience and has taught me all kind of things about my vehicle and what she can handle without anything fancy.” -Brendall Gant “That the best way to start is to just take what you have and go. Even if it means going to a camp ground just to see if you like it. As you go, you know wheat you need and what you don’t/won’t use.” -Brian Haverlock

“I never expected how my rig can get me to quiet places where I can leave the noise of life behind and hike, cook, read, & just BE.” -Kelly Drinan

“NOT SHARING LOCATIONS OF REMOTE CAMPING “Overlanding is not a thing in every state. Texas is mostly privately owned.” SPOTS ON SOCIAL -Jay Jackson MEDIA. “Try to get involved with the community and attend a IRRESPONSIBLE few events from different areas. I have found nice down to earth people all over the country in these POSTING LEADS TO overlanding/camping groups” -Brian Alder THE OVER USE AND ABUSE OF PUBLIC “You can rent overlanding vehicles all over the world. So fly places and rent to see what you like before you LANDS.” buy and get into it. Plus even when you get your own -JAMES MCMILLAN gear, renting offers many benefits. Why limit yourself to road trips from your house when you can do it on a different continent every trip...I have a fairly wellequipped 4Runner, but I've taken trips in Costa Rica, Jordan, Scotland, and other places in Land Rovers, FJs, and others. Renting opens so many more doors. I'm in New Orleans so I have to drive 2 days to get somewhere real. Meanwhile, I can hop a flight to Costa Rica and be in jungles in a Land Cruiser that afternoon.” -Craig Guillot
