You can’t miss Chris and Jill Carr’s Jeep, it is a red-white and blue, in your face tribute to all things Jeep and the good ol’ US of A. The Carrs love to trail ride and in northern Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan, that can mean lots of forest pinstripe. With that in mind, Chris and Jill did a fair bit of research and ended up discovering a product called Trail Scalesa rugged, protective film for Jeeps and 4x4 vehicles.
In their install video, they demonstrate how to prep, apply and care for the Trail Scales, which essentially serves as armor for the paint and finish. Be sure to check out their video and like and subscribe at 1941_adventures on YouTube.
Trail Scales is relaunching in spring of 2025 with an expanded product line- get on their email list for info and to get notified of the relaunch schedule at TrailScales.com
Woohoo! The first flakes of winter have fallen Thoughts of snow wheeling in our favorite places begins to creep into our collective minds I think the thing people forget is that "up north," most of the time you are dealing with snow of epic proportions And the farther north you go, the deeper it gets Think snowbelt, lake-effect, white-outs, blizzards and snowfall events totalling feet, not inches In parts of the northern lower, and upper peninsula of Michigan, extreme northern Wisconsin and northeastern Minnesota, snow removal is a daily activity. The illustration at the right shows that major metropolitan areas like Minneapolis, Chicago & Detroit average 30-60" of snowfall per year. Seems like a lot? Not compared to the 150" plus average in the U.P.
The record snowfall in the Keweenaw was 390.4" in the winter of 1978- 1979 That's 32 feet of snow This is not meant to discourage you but knowing what to expect can be helpful when planning a snow wheeling and camping adventure Setting your sights on a realistic plan and reasonable location will go a long way in making the trip safe and fun for everyone Also, check current snow depth maps and keep your eye on the weather before heading out
The transition from mild snow depths to serious footage is sharp from northern lower Michigan thru the upper peninsula and to extreme northeast Minnesota. Here the Great Lakes contribute to early and late season lake-effect snow, and to extending the period of time that snow stays on the ground
Many state campgrounds in the Midwest have camping available in the winter A quick Google search will get you a list of parks and campgrounds If dispersed camping in national or state forests is more your style,
keep in mind the epic snowfalls mentioned earlier The farther north you go, the harder it will be to get very far into the woods It is much easier to find campsites in areas that average 60-90" of snow vs an area that sees 200" or more in a season
To sum it up, do some research and balance your expectations with reality It is very tempting to see places in the winter that you love in the summer, but that is not always doable
One good tip for those going on their first adventure is to go with a friend or two (for recovery help if needed) and have a place to bail to if you don't find a good campsite or have trouble staying warm and dry An emergency kit with food, water and a first aid kit is a must in every rig Also be very careful about vehicle exhaust- always keep your tailpipe clear of obstruction and crack your windows if you are stuck or idling for more than a few minutes. Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen very fast!
The risks of exploration increase when adverse conditions are present, but with proper prep, reasonable expectations and solid plan, you just might have the time of your life. Happy (and safe) trails! -CP
Forts Trail Team emerged from a conversation around a campfire a few years ago in Colorado Wouldnt it be great to share the experiences of taking stock Toyota trucks to amazing places all over the United States?
Forts Trail Team wants to emphasize that a stock Toyota truck can go almost anywhere! Its never our game to say giant lifts and a million bucks in gear will make it more fun Toyota makes a great series of trucks with all the equipment you need to go from one end of this country to the other on unpaved roads!
When we do modifications, we have connections for gear as we are sponsored by Forts Toyota of Pekin Their parts department offers world-class equipment from ARB, ICON Vehicle Dynamics and dozens of other vendors
Over three days, the team hit a bevy of trails from both sides of Hot Springs Off-Road park Our trucks were running the trails flawlessly. But… we had a few moments of bad spotting (by yours truly) sucked up trail time like a hoover on Saturday afternoon My IFS partial eyeballs have caused me to have some difficulty spotting Jake with his Land Cruiser I thought it could flex over a jagged boulder at the end of Fun Run and I was wrong He got stuck with his front differential perched up on a nice-sized boulder.
Back-and-forth rocking was not getting the superheavy Toyota anywhere We figured out that rock stacking would not work without risking some damage to the differential as the truck bounced
We pulled out all the bags of recovery gear and worked with RAGING TRD (3rd gen 4runner) to get in position to pull the cruiser back off the obstacle Treehugger 1 0 had a winch but the lead rusted and broke off my XRC winch a few years ago and I never replaced it
Gravity and the weight of the Land Cruiser were working against the winch Jake’s built 80 nearly took the bumper off of Andrews’s 4Runner when we tasked the 9000lb winch I watched the bumper start to drop
while nothing was happening with the movement of the trucks A weak link had been found Andrew’s ARB bumper mounts were cracking
This is not working, time to reboot and reset Trail leader, Bart, hopped out of his buggy and had us reroute cables through a snatch block. You gain a mechanical advantage if you double down the lines with a pivot. It seems counter-intuitive and you never go that direction first when doing a recovery, but Bart’s fresh look at the situation paid off. A snatch block runs a lot slower, but you get more power
Jake was unstuck! Perfect timing, we were all tired from a long day on the trails. The 4 of us rolled back to the pavilion with myself feeling the shame of getting the unstickable stuck My bad I have never guided or spotted a solid axle truck before I think we need to work on this
Another misnomer about off-roading Getting stuck or using recovery gear must be a terrible time Shouldn’t we consider it the equivalent of a fumble in football or an error at second base? No, not to me anyway
Grabbing the recovery kits and pulling a truck out from an obstacle in an off-road park is the best place to learn and relearn skills that you may need in the wild Getting stuck in Hot Springs at an off-road park surrounded by 200 other Toyotas is ideal to say the least. You walk away with more knowledge and you see if your current recovery pack is the correct setup. If, heaven forbid you need to recover a truck in Colorado at 11,000 feet with no help, you have that additional kernel of knowledge of field training
When was new to the hobby years ago, I probably made a bad judgment call On one of my first trips to Colorado, we found an FJ Cruiser hanging off the trail road headed up to Poughkeepsie Gulch We took a recovery strap and hooked to the front of the FJ And then hooked the other end to the 2010 4Runner rear hitch. I gently pulled him back onto the trail and it all worked out But to be honest, memories of this recovery give me the willies Was I buckled in? How far down was the fall if the FJ had slid down? I know I had nowhere to go but down if he went over WHY DID I DO THAT? I like to think that it was safer than I remember, or I would not have done it.
Years later, I caravaned with Bill Burkes on an overnight expedition to FJ Summit Days were filled with a trek across Colorado’s Grand Mesa and at night we would round up the trucks at a campsite and listen to his stories. Bill is very well known in the off-road circles and he told a story about training for the Camel Trophy Truck team training. He described full days of recovering their trucks through bogs of mud with nothing but winches and straps It was a great story, but anyone who has ever handled 50 feet of those straps in rain or mud knows what a terrible day that could be One thing for certain, if I was stuck I would trust Bill’s judgment! (Bart is a solid second choice if you find yourself in his presence)
I said to my son the other night “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” He stared at me blankly like a 21-yearold son will do when they have no idea what Dad is talking about The answer: “Practice!” I think that applies here as well. Whether its the Camel Team or some guys spotting each other in an off-road park, an hour playing with your recovery gear will go a long way if the need arises in the wild
We look forward to more Fort’s Trail Team dispatches from Eric in future issues!

THE SOLUTION TO A COMMON CAMPING PROBLEM
Perfect! Well sign up for a few tradeshows, attend, and introduce our product to all who are interested There are over 100 overlanding and camping shows across the US each with a different cost, expected attendance and distinct focus Which posed the next challenge, which is the right show and how do you choose?
With limited information available on the web, it was time to put boots on the ground and experience the shows in person
Our initial research created three categories of events: large events (greater than 8000 in attendance) medium events (between 200-7,999 in attendance) and small events (less than 199 in attendance) The plan was to talk to as many vendors and attendees as possible during each event Learn how far each event reaches, how to create better brand and product awareness at the shows find which shows excel for sales, and understand the best benefits from each type of show
HERE ARE SOME OF THE EXPERIENCES AND THE CONCLUSIONS WE CAME TO.
Here are some of the experiences and the conclusions we came to.
The average distance attendees will travel is similar from event to event Most attendees travel less than 6 hours to attend a show The occasional enthusiast will travel more than 10 hours by vehicle to attend This data can help focus a geographic location or betterspread efforts across a larger area without double dipping in the same pool of people Keep in mind, there can be hundreds of thousands of people within 6 hours of a location Visiting the same location or even attending the same show two years in a row exposes you to new people
There was a small show that incentivized the attendees with a raffle ticket to visit each vendor This is a great way to ensure people talk with you as a small or new company in the industry The vendor time during this show was condensed into a 3-hour window each day, encouraging attendees to make the most of their time We noticed during this time that no vendor sat alone for more than 2 minutes at a time Pay attention to how each show is conducted A big goal of each show is to entice vendors to be involved A show you might think has low returns can do something special and create the perfect environment for your brand
Some vendors of the small and medium shows mentioned that attendees may not invest in products or services during the show These shows are more focused on community building, day activities and enjoying the outdoors These small and medium shows may be best used to create brand awareness or introduce your product to an attentive audience
The shows may not create new customers during the event, but the environment is perfect to meet and connect with campers This is an excellent opportunity to hear feedback, develop new ideas, and introduce the faces behind the brand!
Multiple vendors attending the larger shows stated that stand placement and design can influence where attendee attention is directed Picking an overlooked location or having a stand that blends in with those surrounding it could affect the success of these shows The “forest” of stands and products drawing attention could make a stand easy to pass by The best plan is to create an inviting environment to bring eyes and attendees to you Try new booth layouts or test different eye-catching pieces at each show you attend and find the combination that works for your product and brand
Create a robust plan to reconnect after the shows are over Flat Peak LLC took too long to reconnect with a few great contacts When we eventually reached out, the connection was cold We found that planning a future connection or reaching out immediately after the show is best Remember that even the smaller shows can have over 100 people in attendance After a weekend filled with meeting new friends and creating great memories your interaction will blend quickly with the the weekend Just try to re conversation you had w coworker last week Make su reconnect quickly to keep discussions warm and m forward
Flat Peak LLC will start exhibitin year The time we took to resear shows was worth the effort Th still much to learn and challenges to face As we forward, we want to keep the mentality and focus we have climbing, hiking, or overlanding your eyes on where you are goin look back to appreciate how far gone Work alongside those facin same challenges and help those who are coming after And no matter where you are on your journey remember that the most important step is your next one
luck, and keep pursuing your goals!
For the third year, we celebrated the end of showverlanding season with a fun-filled weekend of trail riding, making new friends and raising funds for theDanielBooneBackcountryByway.

During the day, participants navigated through scenic routes, appreciating the breathtaking vistas that the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway is known for. Each twist and turn of the trail brought new challenges and opportunities for camaraderie, as drivers helped one another overcome obstacles, perform trail repairs, recoveries, celebrate victories and comfort theemotionallydamaged(youknowwhoyouare, loveyou.)
In the afternoon, everyone wandered vendor row and chatted with reps at the various booths with products ranging from amazing Xgrid campers to the coveted fire pokers from Dirtbound. The ADV Passports were getting stampedandweatewaytoomuchHalloweencandy.

Nurturing a child’s love for the outdoors in winter can be incredibly rewarding and makes for a season full of adventure and bonding. Here are some ways to foster that enthusiasm:
1. Outdoor Christmas Crafting: Gather pine cones, twigs, and rocks from outside, then create natural ornaments and wreaths together You could even make “edible ornaments” for animals by stringing birdseed, popcorn, or cranberries to hang in nearby trees, attracting wildlife while also decorating nature
Winter Wildlife Scavenger Hunts: Plan a festive scavenger hunt with a winter twist! Make a checklist of winter birds, animal tracks, evergreen trees, or interesting snow formations they might find. Bring a small pair of binoculars, a notebook, and a pencil for sketching or taking notes.
2 Christmas Lights Nature Walk: Bundle up and take a nighttime hike with headlamps or flashlights Bring along some hot chocolate in a thermos and point out constellations, stars, and moon phases as you explore winter evenings under a clear sky
3 Winter Camping or Backyard Camping: If you're prepared for the cold, try winter camping (even if just in the backyard) Set up a tent, have sleeping bags, and roast marshmallows over a campfire Winter camping can help kids learn new outdoor skills and see familiar spaces in a new season.
4 Build a Snow Village or Snow Fort: Encourage them to build a small village or fort in the snow, using natural items like sticks, rocks, or pine cones as accessories. It’s a great way to be creative outside and enjoy a classic winter activity.
5. Track Animal Prints in the Snow: After a fresh snowfall, look for animal prints. Bring a field guide to help identify which animals might have passed through, which can make the outing feel like an outdoor mystery adventure.
6. Skiing, Snowboarding, or Snowshoeing Lessons: If possible, introducing children to winter sports is a fantastic way to build their outdoor skills and confidence Look for seasonal classes or family-friendly trails and slopes
7 Winter Nature Photography: Give them a simple camera, or let them use your phone to capture snowy landscapes, frozen lakes, and frosty trees Nature photography can help kids slow down and appreciate winter scenery
8 Read Winter Adventure Books Together: Books with wintery outdoor themes can inspire kids to get outside After reading, go out and “recreate” scenes from the stories in your own backyard or local park
9 Plan a New Year's Outdoor Goal: Make a plan for upcoming outdoor adventures together, like visiting a national park or learning a new outdoor skill Setting a fun goal gives them something to look forward to all season long.
10 Do any of these sound like a good fit for your little ones? Let us know how you have inspired a love of the outdoors with your kids!

“Welcome to Trails End Campground, where the cabins are rustic and the wildlife is plentiful Located just 1/4 mile west of Copper Harbor, Michigan, offering over 70 campsites and camper cabins Come and experience the beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula for yourself ” -Trails End website
Those of you who have been following us for a while should be familiar with Trails End Campground Its been a while since we profiled Trails End in our lodging directory so we realized we need to fill you in on all the updates they have made We were just there for the Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat in September and enjoyed everything about our stay
What’s new:
additional water spigots near each restroom Orchard trail bike path around the camp lake is complete additional porta-potty facilities and bear-proof trash bins
What hasn’t changed it the stunning beauty of the campground with the views of Brockway Mountain, the mist lingering over the lake in the morning, the gorgeous gardens and the laid-back vibe The no-hassle selfpay campsite registration and firewood shack make rolling in and grabbing a site easy, no matter what time of day The sites are first-come-first-served so don’t bother calling to reserve one There is always plenty of room! The rustic cabins are reservable online and your cabin will be unlocked and waiting for you upon your arrival Winter is my favorite time of the year in Copper Harbor and the rustic cabins stay cozy and warm with the wood burning stoves (firewood provided!) A must-do activity is to snowshoe right from your cabin to Hunter’s Point Park, the views of the Harbor, the big lake and the blue ice formations are amazing
Camp is just a short walk or bike ride into town where you can linger over drinks at Ziks in the evening or take in a sunrise with a cup of coffee and the best damn donuts in the U P at Jamesen’s (thimbleberry glazed are highly recommended) in the morning.
