Stephen Sawka, now in his tenth year at Westsyde Secondary School, says, “I read ‘Medea’ in university, and it’s always been on my wish list. It’s a dark revenge tale—and that’s fun for the performers to play exceptional roles they can sink their teeth into.” On the cusp of showcasing his twenty-first production, the Artistic Director of Performing Arts Westsyde credits the students behind creative collective. “From that first day of rehearsals to fading to black on closing night, it’s all about creating an authentic theatre experience with a professional polish.” Sawka continues, “As always, I want to give these students the best possible experience working in theatre.”

On Saturday, April 29, the City will host the second annual Green Living Expo at the Sandman Centre from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. This year’s free, familyfriendly event will host a full day of speakers and workshops, free yoga classes, a food truck festival, and over 50 exhibitor booths! Visitors will have a chance to test drive an electric car, get their hands dirty in garden demonstrations, learn about micro-greens, ask questions about pollinators, and interact with the wide range of community organizations that support arts, culture, and sustainability in Kamloops. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore themes of energy and the environment, health and wellness, sustainable transportation, cultural and social sustainability, and food and urban agriculture. The City will host several booths featuring healthy backyard tips, water conservation, parks and recreation, the new recycling program, and transportation. The day long speaker series will include inspiring presentations on healthy backyards, food matters, pests and pollinators, and sus-
Passenger numbers continue to decline at Airport More than 29,000 people flew through the Kamloops Airport last month, down just 1.5 per cent from the same month in 2016. Year-to-date, passenger traffic is still down nearly six per cent. Manager Fred Legace says traffic is slowly recovering after a quiet January and February. “The first two months of the year were marked by a drop that was really related to the number of people who were traveling back and forth in Northern Alberta for work in the oil and gas sector. As a sector, it is starting to come back again. There have been some noises coming out of Alberta that they are looking to rehire some of the people that were laid off,” said Legace.
Legace adds April is typically the slowest month of the year, and the time when many airlines start dropping flights to markets like Kamloops. But he adds that hasn’t happened this year, and

Scouts from across British Columbia were awarded the prestigious Queen’s Venturer Award at the 62nd annual award ceremony that took place Saturday, April 22 at Government House of British Columbia in Victoria. Kamloops Venturer Scout Rhys Paetkau was a recipient this year. The Governor General of Canada, who serves as Scouts Canada’s Patron Scout, bestowed the annual awards. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements among Venturer Scouts between the ages of 14-17. The Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia
and Provincial Patron of Scouts Canada, was on hand to present the awards to 70 recipients. The Government House of British Columbia in partnership with Scouts Canada celebrated the ceremony as a Canada 150 event. Did you know that the Queen’s Venturer Award is worth 4 high school credits?
