Conquering the Iron Mountain Known as the crown jewel of Hard Enduro, extreme off-road racing, the Red Bull Hare Scramble Erzbergrodeo sets the standard for intensity in the world of motocross. Over 1500 international daredevils will flock to Eisenerz, Austria for the chance to participate in the main competition. After preliminary races, only 500 finalists will have a shot at conquering the massive obstacle course Iron Mountain--Austria’s largest iron mine. While hundreds start the race, only a handful of riders will complete the course. In a race steeped in nearly insurmountable odds, reaching the finish line will be a true test of talent and will—and teamwork, as the 2015 championship attested, when four men worked together to complete the course. Kamloops resident Chayse Marshall, 24, is ready for that challenge—and with two other locals, Ryan Beers and Lionel Kabotoff, he will be heading to the Austria in mid June. Chayse started racing Downhill Mountain bikes when he was 12-years-old. Over the course of his cycling career, he competed and placed in numerous local, provincial and national competitions, including a World Cup and two World Championships. He also represented Canada on the Canadian Federation DH Cycling team. Chayse was named BC Junior Elite Downhill Champion in 2008; and broke a course record in 2012 in the Men’s Elite Division, at the BC Cup Race. Two years ago, Chayse’s passion for the sport began to lose its lustre; the thrill of the challenge was gone. “I lost my motivation for it. My heart just wasn’t in it anymore.” Chayse turned to dirt biking. “It taps into all the things I loved about downhill racing but on a higher level—you’re going further and faster, and seeing more of the world around you. It’s hard to

explain the thrill of it all. It’s unbeatable” He completed his first Enduro race in 2015, and was named Overall Expert Points Leader by the Pacific Northwest Motorcycle Association in 2016. “I thought I was done racing after I stopped mountain biking. I’m glad to have come back to it.” For Chayse, the next step is to take on the biggest Enduro race in the world. He admits with a laugh that he’s leapfrogging over difficulty levels— but that it’s all a part of the fun. Chayse reckons that placing anywhere in the top twenty would be ideal. “Completing the course would feel like winning.” Admittedly, the anticipation is a little “nerve-wracking”; contending with steep gravelly climbs and rocky declines at top speed takes a great deal of expertise, guts and confidence. In the meantime, as Chayse prepares for the adventure and is looking ahead to the future. He praises his family, friends and sponsors for pushing him onward towards the next race: RTR Performance, Matrix, Serenity Now Massage, FastCut CNC and Diverse Extreme Training Center. Follow Chayse’s journey on his website, chaysemarshall.com—as well as on Facebook and Instagram. Alicia Ashcroft, Freelance

First Annual Boys Conference registration now open Taking after its sister program, Power of Being a Girl, the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA is pleased to present the first annual Strength in Being a Boy Conference. Taking place on Wednesday, April 26th, the oneday conference will feature three workshops focusing on a variety of issues that impact the everyday lives of young boys. This event is offered at no cost to grades five, six, seven and eight, and will include a full day of fun and interactive workshops, start of the day and lunch time activities, and a great, healthy lunch provided by Uptown Chefs. Each participant can choose two workshops from the following choices: Dynamic Boy: Judo, the Gentle Way (YMCA/YWCA Registration Codes: #14085/86) Judo translates into the gentle way in Japanese. More focused on being assertive and using other people’s energy to support one’s own, the boys will cultivate alertness, concentration

and self-confidence as well as the attitude of fair play and sportsmanship. This workshop will be presented by the Kamloops Judo Club, who have spent over sixty years providing a safe environment for the physical, mental and moral development of boys, girls, men and women of all ages. Questing Boy: Navigating Challenging Situations (YMCA/ YWCA Registration Codes: #14087/88) By exploring and finding the sword of truth, boys will search for the answers to the things we all want to know, but do not know where to start. In a group workshop setting, the participants will decorate wooden swords whilst finding answers and discovering truth. Unmasked Boy: Exploring Boy Culture (YMCA/YWCA Registration Codes: #14089/90) The participants will be given the opportunity to discuss current and pressing issues facing young boys, through exploring numerous societal pressures to “act like a man”

and by examining and challenging gender stereotypes. By recognizing “what makes you, you”, these conversations will be facilitated with a combination of verbal discussions as well as asking the participants to embody their Lego Master Builders from within and a lot of laughs. Registration for this event began on March 1st with an inclusive, limited amount of sixty spaces. Running from 8:30am to 3:00pm at the Tournament Capital Centre, participants are encouraged to register early to ensure a space in this educational, fun filled day. All interested participants can register through the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA at (250)-3727725 or at (250)-554-9622. with two week spring breaks within the school calendar, the District and the KTTA would need to renegotiate the length of spring break and related number and length of instructional days within the Collective Agreement currently in place. The Board of Education expressed appreciation for all the feedback that has been received from teachers, staff, parents, students and the wider community on the topic of the length of spring break and considered this feedback in approving the new school calendar. The Board of Education also recognized the vital importance of honoring its current Collective Agreement with the unions – an Agreement that currently allows for oneweek spring break. As such, they have directed SD73 administration and staff to work with the KTTA to explore opportunities to renegotiate the Collective Agreement related to length of spring break. For more information, visit www.sd73.bc.ca

RD

The Board of Education for School District 73, at its regular Board meeting on Monday March 13, passed a new school calendar for the next 3 school calendar years 2017/18 to 2019/20. In accordance with the Collective Agreement currently in place between the District and the Kamloops Thompson Teacher’s Association (KTTA), the new school calendar reflects a return to one-week spring breaks. This decision does not have any impact on the scheduled spring break taking place this school year (March 20 – March 31). Although the last three school years included a two-week spring break, this extended spring break was only possible because of a Letter of Agreement between the school district, CUPE and KTTA in 2014. The Letter of Agreement allowed for a ‘trial period’ of two-week spring breaks for up to three years, this trial period expires in 2017. Therefore, in order to continue

Surprising your wife

CANADIAN, EH!

A man decides to take the opportunity while his wife is away to paint the wooden toilet seat. The wife comes home sooner than expected, sits and gets the seat stuck to her rear. She is understandably distraught about this and asks her husband to drive her to the doctor. She puts on a large overcoat so as to cover the stuck seat, and they go. When they get to the doctor’s, the man lifts his wife’s coat to show their predicament. The man asks, “Doctor, have you ever seen anything like this before?” “Well, yes,” the doctor replies, “but never framed.”

Shoe cover-up

One day a man drove his secretary home after she fell quite ill at work. Although this was an innocent gesture, he decided not to mention it to his wife, who tended to get jealous easily. Later that night the man and his wife were driving to a restaurant. Suddenly he looked down and spotted a high-heel shoe half hidden under the passenger seat. Not wanting to be conspicuous, he waited until his wife was looking out her window before he scooped up the shoe and tossed it out of the car. With a sigh of relief, he pulled into the restaurant parking lot. That’s when he noticed his wife squirming around in her seat. “Honey,” she asked, “have you seen my other shoe?”

Saint Peter checking ID Saint Peter is checking ID’s at the Pearly Gates, and first comes a Texan. “Tell me, what have you done in life?” says St. Peter. The Texan says, “Well, I struck oil, so I became rich, but I didn’t sit on my laurels - I divided all my money among my entire family in my will, so our descendants are all set for about three generations.” St. Peter says, “That’s quite something. Come on in. Next!” The second guy in line has been listening, so he says, “I struck it big in the stock market, but I didn’t selfishly just provide for my own like that Texan guy. I donated five million to Save the Children.” “Wonderful!” says Saint Peter. “Come in. Who’s next?” The third guy has been listening and says timidly with a downcast look, “Well, I only made five thousand dollars in my entire lifetime.” “Heavens!” says St. Peter. “What instrument did you play?”

Baby brother For weeks a six-year old boy kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house. One day the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child. The six-year old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Furthermore,

he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event. The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap and said, “Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?” Josh burst into tears and confessed, “I think Mommy ate it!” FOllOw

ECHO STARGAZER DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You’ve been thinking a lot about yourself and your place in the world lately. With a new look and approach to life it’s time to step out and shine your love. The world needs heroes. DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) It’s been a tough spell recently as recent pains won’t seem to heal. Your journey however is actually blessed with a beautiful new day. You just have to know where to look. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) Put up your dukes! You can see a fight coming and the only way to a brighter day is right though the mess. Look to the past for help moving forward. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) A beautiful new light shining at a distance helped navigate your dreams to a beautiful new day. It’s now time to get back to work. You’re highly visible and the fans are calling for more. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22) That vacation you’ve been longing for might be closer than you think but the chores have to be finished first. You’re also highly visible but not everyone is happy about it. Shine brightly but watch for stray toes looking to be squished. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) As the departing spotlight returns your relationships to the quiet illusions of hopes and dreams you’re free to focus on making yourself truly happy. Let the playful energy of the week guide your footsteps into the future you’ve been waiting for. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) It’s time to enter the warm and radiant spotlight of love. Dress your best and have your list ready. Love is looking for an adventure and Libra is playmate number one. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Long-standing money problems are about to clear but it’s not time to break the bank open. Work is calling with one final push. Do this and you’ll reach your dream. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) It’s time to start locking down your financial picture. Bills are coming and the well is beginning to dry. Tighten your belt. A storm is coming. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Kids kick up a fuss yet again but this week it’s time to take care of you. Get to the spa and take a “me” day. You deserve to pamper yourself. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) The energy is shifting and you’re usually quick to lead the charge. This week however, events catch you off guard and it’s time to take a break. The past says hello. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Your social network has undergone a major change and you’re not entirely sure which friends you can trust. That doesn’t mean you can’t get out and have fun. Finances are better than expected. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist.
