Papa Johns and Sunshine Foundation dares kids to dream At the 3rd annual Dreams for Kids day, John Stokes, General Manager and owner of both Kamloops locations of Papa John’s, was a bit too busy to chat. John, also the owner of the Penticton and Prince George locations, was hard at work on Wednesday, April 26. The phone was ringing off the hook; the order screen lit up like a pinball machine. Boxes upon boxes of pizza were whizzing out the door, delivery drivers going past a lineup of customers waiting to order a plethora of cheesy delights, and it was all for a good cause. 100% of the proceeds and staff wages earned during Dreams for Kids day supported The Sunshine Foundation, a charitable organization that helps make dreams come true for children with severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses. All that hard work certainly paid off, among the six participating locations, Papa John’s collectively raised a whopping $42,354. Heidi Spannbauer, Vice President of Development and Marketing, was at the North Shore pizzeria and was chatting with customers about their personal connections with both the Sunshine Dreams and DreamLifts programs. “It’s emotional and heartwarming to hear about the impact the program makes on the lives of families,” Heidi said.
From trips to Disneyland to custom-made sporting equipment to meeting a hero—(one child wanted to meet Alex Trebek and see the Jeopardy set, another wanted to host the WWF)—and The Sunshine Foundation helped make that happen. Heidi remarked that one child wanted to go to Maryland to visit the Andrews Air Force Base. She smiled at the recollection of that request. “It’s wonderful, we encourage the kids to dream big and dream bold, andRSOE they- frreally ear jan 25 2012.indd 1 do.” The Sunshine Foundation was originally founded by a police officer who lost his teenage son to muscular dystrophy. New Fire Chief for Kamloops Fire Rescue anounced
Boogie the bridge
The City of Kamloops is pleased to announce that Mike Adams has been appointed as Fire Chief for Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR), effective immediately. The two month, nation-wide interview process involved candidates from across Canada. Mike Adams has been the acting Fire Chief with KFR since December 2016 and served as the Deputy Fire Chief and Assistant Chief since 2011. Before working in Kamloops, Adams served as the Deputy Fire Chief in Squamish and served in North Vancouver for 20 years. Adams says he “feels privileged to be selected” and “looks forward to leading such an amazing team of public safety professionals.” Corporate Services and Community Safety Director, David Duckworth, expressed his congratLeft: Ben Hebert (l) and Joel Verhoeff (r) were the first 2 kids to cross the 5k finish line. Renewed support for 44-year-old Kamloops institution The Kamloops International Baseball Tournament, known as KIBT, took a hit over the past few years. With lower than projected team registration and spectator attendance, the tournament suffered a bit of a financial loss, prompting organizers to look hard at the event and its chances for survival. “The past few years have been a bit of a challenge for us,” said Vice President of KIBT, Wayne Harper. “Last minute cancellations and a lack of sponsorship were a challenge for our tournament which has been around since 1973. But this year, we’re very pleased with the renewed interest and support of KIBT!” The KIBT team looked to the expertise of community boosters Norm Daley and Jack Hollstedt to help inject some much needed enthusiasm into the event, with a focus primarily on sponsorship. And did the duo ever come through. “Norm and Jack have worked so hard, and as a result, we are so pleased to announce that Sussex Insurance has inked a deal to be our
title sponsor,” said Harper. “This sponsorship not only helps to keep the event running, but we believe will also create an overall momentum for the tournament to thrive.” The momentum Harper speaks of has started with eight teams already confirming early for the tournament, which had only seven teams coming to play last year. The organization is thrilled with the sponsorship as the high level of semi-professional baseball fits exceedingly well within the city’s status as Canada’s Tournament Capital. And Sussex Insurance owner Kent Taylor couldn’t agree more. “We are excited about partnering with KIBT,” said Taylor. “Since I purchased Sussex Insurance four years ago, we’ve worked hard on showing our support to the baseball community. I have friends and family members who all play and we see how the sport brings people together. As the sponsor of the Sussex Insurance baseball training facility on McArthur Island here in Kamloops, when we were approached by KIBT
to consider sponsorship, we sponsorship package. “We’re really looking forward to were on board right away and we are also encouraging other this year’s event from July 6 – 9 local companies to sponsor the at NorBrock stadium,” said Harper. event too.” “It will be some of the best baseball KIBT is putting out an open call you’ll see, right here in our beautifor sponsorships and asks any ful city!” interested individuals and busiFor more information visit nesses to contact Norm Daley of www.kibt.ca Daley & Company CPA LLP for a

have extra plastic bags to recycle?
Kamloops Centre for Senior Information, in partnership with a few wonderful people in the community, are collecting plastic bags and creating mats for the homeless and shelter animals to provide a little comfort. The timing is great due to the recent changes to the curbside recycling program in Kamloops. The mats help keep bags out of the landfill and keep people dry and off the ground. This project will connect people to their community and to each other. If you have plastic bags to recycle please drop them off at the Brock Activity Centre, Monday to Friday anytime between 9am and 4pm. If you want to participate in making a mat please join the CSI on Thursday mornings from 10am to noon.
