A family that plays together, stays together The hardest part about making a change is taking the first step. The Kamloops YMCA/YWCA has a program that can help your family become healthier than ever. MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition… Do it) empowers children and families to become fitter and healthier. Parents/caregivers join their children in each session to learn about how to choose healthier foods and spend more time being physically active. Keeping kids healthy is hard but the Kamloops Y will show you how small changes can make a difference. The next Kamloops Y MEND program intake begins April 25. Meghan Drew, MEND program coordinator at the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA, is excited about this new program offered in Kamloops. “It is a program in partnership with the Childhood Obesity Foundation and the Vancouver Y,” comments Meghan. “It is an amazing program which provides families with different tools to adopt healthy lifestyles.” There are two MEND programs. MEND five to seven is for children five to seven years old and their families and MEND seven to 13 is for children seven to 13 years old and their families. One in three kids are above a healthy weight. In the MEND ten-week program the Kamloops

Y can help you think about your family’s daily habits and find easy ways to make healthy changes that last a lifetime. Families get to share tips, play active games kids love, even if they don’t like Physical Education, and learn new things they didn’t know about food. During the ten-week program, families will receive a free three-month recreation pass. Upon completing the program they will get another free three-month pass to the Kamloops Y facilities.
“A family that plays together, stays together,” adds Meghan. “You only have to commit to four hours a week. Our lives are busy and this program brings people back to grassroots. It gets families back on track for life and a healthy lifestyle.” This family friendly program will provide practical demonstrations, games, label reading and information on portion sizes. This is not a diet or weight loss program. MEND is a means to educate fam-
ilies on what they can do to make their loved ones healthier. The first hour is interactive discussion and activities about nutrition and behavior change for the family. The second hour involves continued discussion for the parents while the children engage in fun, physical activities. MEND is free, fun and interactive and supports the entire family in adopting a healthy lifestyle. - continued on page 2

- continued from front “Families have loved it. They say it really empowers their children,” Meghan says. “We have been getting really, really positive feedback.” If you are interested in undergoing the intake process please contact Meghan at mdrew@ kamloopsy.org or call 250-3727725. There are five family spaces left for children seven to 13. The program runs April 25 to June 28 on Thursdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and Saturdays from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Ashley Demedeiros

World record-breaking attempt Cloth diapers have come a long way in the past ten years and the Great Cloth Diaper Change event serves to raise awareness of cloth diapering and create some added buzz and excitement too! To do this, several people in the cloth diapering movement, including Snug Glee Bumz Diaper Service have joined forces
with the nonprofit Real Diaper Association to participate in the fourth annual Great Cloth Diaper Change international event taking place on Saturday April 26. The change will happen at Riverside Park at 11:00am. The event will run from 10:00am to 2:00pm. This year the change will be part of a larger event, Momstown
community Celebration. Riverside Park will be transformed into a town where there will be a Natural Nurturing Park, an area that will be filled with natural parenting resources/vendors, information, bay wearing demos, cloth diaper displays and activities.
Get rid of old tires to help fight mosquitoes The Thompson-Nicola Regional District, in conjunction with Mosquito Control Program contractor BWP Consulting Inc., is providing free, passenger tire drop-off opportunities in the municipalities of Chase, Barriere and Kamloops this spring. Because unwanted tires are prime mosquito breeding habitats, TNRD residents are encouraged to take any old passenger vehicle tires or transport tractor-trailer tires (no agricultural tires), with or without rims, and drop them off for recycling on the following dates and locations between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm: Saturday
April 26, Barriere Secondary School, Sunday April 27, Westsyde Senior Secondary School, Saturday May 3, Chase Secondary School and Sunday May 4, Dallas Elementary School. “Many people may not realize that just a small amount of water inside any old tires sitting around their property can create the perfect breeding ground for mosquito larvae,” says BWP contractor Cheryl Phippen. “By safely recycling these unwanted tires at any of these four free, drop-off locations you’ll remove opportunities for mosquitoes to reproduce around your home.
That helps protect you, your family and neighbours from the nuisance insects and reduces the potential risk of spreading West Nile virus.”
Beautification Join the North Shore Business Improvement Association on May 2 to help clean up Fortune and Leigh. At the corner of Fortune Drive and Leigh Street they will be adding plants and picking up garbage. To confirm your attendance please email info@nsbia.com or call 250-376-2411.
Join Surya Krishna every Tuesday at 10:30 am for meditation at the Golden Buddha and every Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm there is meditation upstairs at Mind Body Connection (people can enter through the store). Currently everything is running by donation. If you are looking for a way to create peace and space in your life, meditation may be the path for you. Surya Krishna is an empowered, compassionate and joyfilled healer and teacher. He has studied with Shakti Durga, the Maha Guru and founder of Shanti Mission in Australia. He has been empowered by his Guru to bring Her teachings, tools and healing modality to Canada. Surya Krishna was born in Chase B.C. and has a strong connection to the people and the land of this area. As well as his most recent training in energy work, he has a degree in Psychology from the University of Victoria as well as a Graduate Diploma in Counseling from Australia. Combining his training in both eastern and western philosophies and modalities, mixed with his compassion and kindness (and a pinch of humour), Surya Krishna has found that Ignite Your Spirit healings and meditations is a really fast and effective recipe to create change in one’s life. Whether that change be more peace and deeper connection with one’s higher self and the divine/ spirit/the creator, or more money, better relationships, more selfconfidence, less stress and better health.

Findlay’s Vacuum and Sewing Machine World at 251 Tranquille Road has beat the odds and won the Kamloops Food Bank’s Hunger Games. They donated over 2,200 items to feed the hungry people of Kamloops according to Kaitlynn Montpetit (left). “This proves that small businesses carry the community,” comments Patti Montpetit (right), owner of the little mother daughter shop that could.
Earlier this month Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo announced funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program for the Interior Community Services. “Our government recognizes the valuable contribution seniors have made to our society and the economy. Through initiatives such as the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are helping to ensure that seniors maintain a high quality of life and continue as active, participating members of their communities,” says Cathy. The Interior Community Services received $25,000 to assist their Babies Head Start program, which will mentor young families and other seniors in the knowledge and skills involved in the canning and preservation of fruits and vegetables.

Urge to make a pledge for Earth Day What are you doing for Earth Day? Kamloops 350 and the BCSEA have some suggestions, and are hoping that residents will get on board by making a public pledge for an Earth Day action. Everyone who posts a pledge will be entered into a draw for five retractable indoor/outdoor clotheslines, courtesy of BCSEA-Kamloops. Earth Day Kamloops 2014 is a Facebook event where residents are encouraged to share their commitments with the rest of the city. “We’d like people to think about their daily habits and make some adjustments, whether for a day, a month, a year, or forever!” says Gisela Ruckert of Kamloops 350. “Earth Day is a convenient reminder that we need to
live more lightly on this planet, and this campaign will hopefully give some of us that extra bit of motivation to do what we know is the right thing to do.” In addition to making a pledge to do something Earth-friendly, participants are pledging to share their commitment with at least one other person. “By explaining to someone else what their pledge is, and the reason they’re making it, we are hoping to spread the awareness beyond the already “converted,” engaging people who might not think there’s a need to change our habits,” says Nancy Flood, another organizer. “We need to motivate more people to step up and take positive actions on Earth Day and every day, really.”
Post your commitment on their Facebook event page (search for Kamloops 350): by making your Earth Day actions public you’ll be inspiring your neighbours to join in and you’ll be automatically entered for the clothesline draws. Those who make a pledge will be in good company. Every year on April 22, more than one billion people take part in Earth Day. Across the globe, individuals, communities, organizations and governments acknowledge the amazing planet we call home and take action to protect it. So what can you do? Don’t drive; make a point of walking, cycling or taking transit. Why not mix up a batch of eco-friendly
household cleaners that you’ve been meaning to try? (Hint: the City is running a course on making your own eco-friendly cleaners on April 29). Plant a tree, clean up a section of riverbank, the possibilities are endless.
Oops... The Echo would like to clarify that the United Church Women, Community Kitchens and Sensational Soups are hosting a Strawberry Tea and Plant Sale on May 3 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Not from 3:00pm as printed in the April 16 paper. If you have any questions please call Ronolee at 250376-2261.

Helping you with your dental health Dr. Barry Dextraze Dental Office is more than a dentist office. They are a supportive care facility that wants to ensure you have optimal dental health. They are professional and provide a comfortable atmosphere for the patients where they can gain education and confidence regarding their dental health. For the month of April the Canadian Dental Association is making the pledge to bring more awareness to dental health with the Dental Health Month campaign. Dr. Dextraze also wants to bring awareness to the importance of the health of your mouth. Even if you are nervous about going to the dentist, it is still important to keep your teeth in optimal health. “Dental health is extremely important and the main reason is for comfort; if you don’t have good dental health, you can’t chew food properly,” comments Dr. Dextraze. “Dental health is important to your general health as we get most of our nourishment through our mouth.” Dr. Dextraze first became a dentist because of his desire to provide a public service. “I really was looking for something in life to sink my teeth into and give me a sense of satisfaction of doing

something good for society and help the general public,” adds Dr. Dextraze. You can have peace of mind that you will be comfortable and looked after when you visit Dr. Dextraze’s Dental Office. Dental health is important to overall health. Don’t let dental problems get to the point of an emergency. Prevention is inexpensive; neglect is not. Although the mouth is part of the body, we often think of it as something sep-
arate. We often ignore bleeding or tender gums, while an irritation or pain elsewhere in the body would mean a trip to the doctor. The easiest way to keep you mouth happy and you smiling is to visit your dentist regularly. It was late and Charlie was about to climb into bed when his wife informed him that there was a light on in their garden shed. Charlie started to go outside to turn off the light but noticed some people in the shed who were busy stealing his things. He ran back inside right away and called the cops, who asked him “Are there any intruders in your house?” to which Charlie replied no and explained his circumstances. The cops told Charlie that all patrol cars were otherwise occupied, and that he should just lock his door and a uniformed cop would be at his house when one was free. Charlie answered, “Alright,”
hung up, waited 30 seconds and then called the cops again. “Hello, I just called a short while ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. I want to let you know that they’re not a problem anymore because I’ve just shot every one of them.” Charlie then hung up the phone. In five short minutes, three patrol cars, a SWAT team and an ambulance arrived, and of course, the cops caught the burglars in the act. One of the cops snapped at Charlie, “I thought you said that you shot every one of them!” “I thought you said there were no patrol cars free!” Charlie answered.

Your Horoscope TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Early in the week the flow is really good for you with both friends and partner(s). Then one of these people requests a stronger commitment. Right away you are challenged by new thoughts. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) There is a shift of your attention to matters of your personal history that may go back quite a long time. You will be looking inside yourself for meditative peace, answers to serious questions and encouragement from your source. CANCER (June 22-July 22) The new moon symbolizes new starts and fresh beginnings. Because the new moon occurs in the dark and is invisible, your new activity may not even be clear to you for a time. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Look for a slight shift in your path. It may look very small now, even unnoticeable. But this is the nubbin of a new branch on the tree. Such changes are often seen in hindsight, as a minor decision that ultimately reshapes your route. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Your new focus for the next two weeks will be mind expanding. You may be researching a new interest, gazing over travel brochures for your next adventure, or pursuing an interest in philosophy or religion. Love and social life have green lights. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You dropped the ball on an important project in self-work during February. It created a type of vacuum within and prevents you from moving forward. Has your confidence waned? SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You have carried so much stress over the last few months that you are similar to a ticking bomb. Circumstances in your work or a change in your life routine might press the button. All of this is hard on the body, so it may stop and refuse to go further until you rest. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) If you have been channeling your energy into a project that has positive value for many you may be receiving recognition and applause now. If, instead, you are working on something that is purely to glorify your ego, you will find the powers are fighting you every step of the way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) You are bombarded by multiple problematic situations and you may be trying to control them all. Transformation is at hand if you will allow yourself to let go of part or all of it. Your body may rebel if you don’t. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) In case anyone attacks you on the road or via the law, you need to remain aware that you are in the right, or within legal parameters. Legal interests are favoured. Hold your ground. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) This is an ideal time to travel with another, to talk things over and stretch your perspective. It is also a good time for any activity connected to writing or education, whether learning or teaching. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) You may be totally tied up in knots during this period. You want to change things within the framework of your partnership(s), but it feels as though you dare not take the initiative to do so. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Michael Thiessen.
