Volunteerism for a cause, not for applause Since joining the amazing team at the Echo a few short months ago, there are a few things I have discovered about Kamloops and the fascinating, diverse people who live here. Through interviews and business stories I have met some of the brilliant artists, successful entrepreneurs and visionaries that create the vibrant tapestry of the community we share. With a tendency to over think everything, I came into this position with an expectation of what I was supposed to accomplish; to bring the people of Kamloops an easy to read format of current arts and events providing the facts and sharing the good news of our North Shore and Downtown communities. With organizations like the United Way and their Days of Caring program, my job becomes that much easier for the week. With all the different community based projects they have completed over the month of August for Days of Caring, I could fill these pages easily with the stories of volunteerism and the spirit of community giving this program instills. From August 9 to 13, the YWomen’s Shelter received a new kitchen, renovating the original kitchen area plus the dining room. Rotary West, Kelson Group and numerous other organizations came together and volunteered

time and materials to make it happen for our community’s most vulnerable women and children. On Thursday, August 13 volunteers from KPMG were at Gardengate to help with general maintenance of the garden before their Salsa Challenge. Gardengate is a part of the Open Door Group that helps individuals with disabilities maintain food security. The next Days of Caring project
is scheduled for Thursday, August 20 when over 40 volunteers from BCLC are going over to Mt. Paul United Church to help Interior Community Services (ICS) with gardening, painting and help with general clean up. ICS will have a facelift by the time these energetic volunteers are finished! Days of Caring are a great opportunity for businesses to work with non-profit organizations to
complete community projects that would not be completed otherwise. This year, KGHM Ajax Mine sponsored the United Way’s Days of Caring and with their help, the United Way has managed to engage more people in the project, thereby expanding and improving the United Way’s ability to take on more projects that need completion. - continued on page 2

Recyclables collection is back
Bloomin’ amazing!
Monday, August 17, (L-R) City gardener Nico Etherington chats with judges Cheryl Blackwell from B100 and Annette McLeod of Tranquille Farm Fresh and about the plants he used. Nico was a part of the team consisting of councilor Arjun Singh and Interior Community Services during the Communities in Bloom planter competition.
Emterra Environmental, the City of Kamloops’ contractor for processing recyclables, has reached a resolution in its labour dispute, bringing the recent strike to an end. Curbside recycling collection will resume on your regular collection day corresponding to your collection zone. To assist in the management of the extra recyclables stored during the strike, the City encourages residents to put their full recycling carts out on their regular collection day and is recommending that stored recyclables be distributed in the cart over the next number of collection days. The City will also collect additional recyclables, at no charge, placed curbside during the first week, from August 17 to 21, only provided that the extra recyclables are placed in clear plastic bags. Recycling and garbage collection may not occur at the same time so please be patient to receive collection throughout the day. The City’s recycling depots at Bunker Road and Ord Road have also reopened.
Behind the Curtain: Giving Seniors a Voice Behind the Curtain is a new community-driven play raising awareness around elder abuse and respect directed by Jennilee Fraser and produced by non-profit Kamloops Women’s Resource Group Society (KWRGS) with seed funding from Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. Following the lives of three women friends from childhood, through careers and family, to becoming seniors, it explores how they both witness and experience a spectrum of elder abuse through subtler forms of dismissal and ageism to neglect and ultimately violence. Fraser has a unique vision to feature the three principle actresses in front of a screen while scenes of conflict acted out by additional characters in the script developed by Erin Linn McMullan, are literally confined to ‘behind the curtain’. KWRGS is working in partnership with the Kamloops Players, with performances at The Stage House Theatre at 7:00 pm on August 27 and 28 with tickets available via Kamloops Live Box Office and a matinee at 2:00 pm on
August 29 by donation. The lineup will open with Options and Opportunities Community Players adaptation of a Grimm’s fairytale directed by Meagan Carmichael and local celebrity comedienne Tara Holmes will be featured for one performance to tackle aging and ageism. The brainchild of KWRGS Society coordinator Darcy Gorrill and Alyssa Gredling, the project is designed to engage senior women in the community through theatre to discuss the issue of elder abuse
in a non-threatening way and to bring together a diverse group of community volunteers of all ages. Through this mentorship to share and expand dramatic skills onstage and behind the scenes Behind the Curtain intends to keep senior women’s contributions to theatre alive and vibrant and to provide a role model by valuing the wisdom of its elders. To prompt further discussion and awareness of elder abuse in the local community, Phase Two of this project will take the play out into
such venues as the library, schools and seniors homes. Darcy, with an extensive background in drama, advocates social change through theatre and brought The Vagina Monologues to Kamloops also under the auspices of KWRGS. New volunteers are always welcome. Rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Stage House Theatre located at 422 Tranquille Road. For more information email behindthecurtainkamloops@ gmail.com.
United Way’s Days of Caring project – continued from page 1 Being kind to others, implementing days of caring into your own daily routine is relatively easy and just feels good. Hold the door open for a stranger, visit an elderly relative, donate blood, read to a child. To develop kindness as a positive habit, I started by choosing a day each week to perform five acts of kindness in one day. It doesn’t have to be for the same person and they don’t
even have to be aware of the act but to deliberately seek ways to be kind to others makes every day one of caring. Try to look on the bright side of life and see the positive side of every situation you encounter. This can be extremely difficult at times, considering the only time we are reminded to look at the bright side is when we are wronged or offended but when you spend your time caring, it becomes nearly impossible to hold a
grudge anymore. Be the light you seek and others will follow your example. Practicing kindness begins within so you never have to be without and can inspire others to do the same. Be the change you seek and others will follow your example. After all, kindness has always been the key to happiness and success in life. She has just launched a kickstarter project, to build a roadside fruit stand beside the food truck. The project is called the Lofty Local Market and can be found on kickstarter. com. This project will benefit the community by providing small scale urban farmers a place to sell their goods on an ongoing basis, give travellers on the way through town a way to contribute to the local economy and will give families in Kamloops continuous access to the kind
of lofty foods that everyone enjoys. “It will also help our food truck to buy better quality foods. We are off to a bit of a later start than we would have liked this year, but have decided to forge ahead anyway and test out the idea on a smaller scale than we originally intended, just to see if people are into it,” shares Morgan. “This year we will be offering a basic local fruit and vegetable stand but if this is something that goes well, we would like to come back next year with a bigger better market offering locally produced milk, eggs, cheese and meats. Thank you to our great sponsors, volunteers, staff and everyone involved in this celebration of the North Shore’s finest businesses, entertainers, restaurants, community organizations, and people! It was a lot of fun for everyone involved. We are extremely lucky to live in such beautiful, diverse, and friendly neighbourhoods. While I may be biased (because I am), I do believe that few other neighbourhoods boast the same kind of family bond that we enjoy on the North Shore. Residents of Kamloops’ North Shore are not isolated strangers happening to live in the same space. We are a connected, generational community with roots deeper than the cherished fruit trees that still dot our backyards. Our families have been here for decades, making many of our children a third, fourth or fifth generation North Shore resident. When you factor in the Ab-

original people who first settled here; Kamloops has always been a place for families. We choose to live here, just as our families have chosen, time and time again, generation after generation, for centuries. The fact that we could live anywhere in British Columbia – or even the world – but still choose to live, work and play in Kamloops speaks volumes about the dedication, love and respect we have for our community. It is a deep history and neighbourhood connection that has become generational. We have a true community approach here because we are passionate about taking care of each other. There is seldom an occasion that you can walk into a local store
To whom it may concern, I would like to thank the City of Kamloops bus drivers for all that they do. As someone with a visual impairment, BC Transit has really made a huge difference for me, not only in learning to navigate the city, but also in gaining independence. The drivers do so many things, including taking the time and getting to know me, calling out stops and making sure I get to where I need to go. So, thank you for taking the time and, sometimes, even going above and beyond. Kudos to all of the BC Transit bus drivers of Kamloops! Kind regards, Ben Johnson

A congratulation on your daughter’s graduation, an offer to help you trim your hard-to-reach hedges, or a question about how your mother is doing are spoken not out of politeness, but out of genuine care. We are the North Shore and we are lucky. We are lucky to live on such a gorgeous piece of land surrounded by family, friends, and neighbours who have our best interests at heart. This community bond deserves to be recognized and celebrated. Come fly away Kamloops Airport announces the traveler numbers for the month of July and year-to-date as compared to the same period in the previous year. In 2014 there were 25,102 monthly travelers compared to 2015 27,198 which is up by 8.3 per cent. To date, that that is 182,170 travelers compared to 2014 185,731 amount, up by two per cent. Kamloops is beginning to see a higher number of tourist related travel due to the lower Canadian dollar as compared to the US dollar. All routes to and from Kamloops are performing well and all are contributing to the increase in year over year numbers of travelers. The following aircraft movements were recorded in May as compared to the same period in the previous year. IFR was at 1,210 in 2014 and this May 2015 was recorded at 1,168 which is an increase of 3.5 per cent. VFR was
2,337 and for 2015 was 2,054, down by 12 per cent. The lower VFR traffic is related to a change in the size of aircraft being used for wildfire operations. The larger Electra aircraft replaces many smaller aircraft in one operation. This reduces the number of overall movements in that sector. Kamloops Airport, with the assistance of Transport Canada, is currently in the midst of reconstruction of 6000 feet of its main runway. Work began on Monday August 10 on the westernmost portion of the original runway. Work will then commence on the new 3000 feet extension. A great portion of this section will be done during non-daylight hours. The entire project has been coordinated to minimize impacts on scheduled passenger flights, wildfire activity and medivac traffic.

Bicycle Repair Stations installed Riding your bike around Kamloops just got easier with the addition of three new bike repair stations. Strategically located near the bike commuter routes and recreational areas of Riverside Park’s high water pillars, McArthur Island Arena’s front entrance, and Kenna Cartwright Park’s main parking lot, these new repair stations provide cyclists who have a flat tire or whose bicycles are in need of a quick tune-up with access to everything they may need to make repairs. The exact locations of the repair stations can be found online on the City’s bike and trail map at www.kamloops.ca/trailandbikemap. After consulting with the City’s bicycle advisory committee, these sites were identified as the best locations for the repair stations due to their high bike traffic, visibility to the public, and existing infrastructure such as bike racks and bike paths.
“As part of the Sustainable Kamloops Plan (SKP), the City is always looking for ways to encourage and support people to get out of their cars and into using alternative modes of transportation, whether it’s getting to their place of employment or for outdoor recreation purposes,” said Marc Solomon, the City’s sustainability programs coordinator. The Plan has goals to increase the number of people using other modes of travel to their workplace, including; carpooling, transit, walking, cycling and other modes; to 30 per cent by 2020. “Biking to work not only reduces carbon emissions, but it also improves quality of life health-wise which are both goals of the plan,” said Solomon. The new stations are made by Bike Fixtation and can service two bicycles at once. They also offer a reference link to online help for repairing bikes. The
repair stations provide cyclists with free access to a variety of tools, from a bike pump and tire levers to hex keys and wrenches. The tools retract to prevent them from being tangled and are secured with high strength aircraft
cable to deter theft. Depending on feedback from the public and how often the repair stations are used, consideration will be given to adding additional repair stations to other high use bike areas in the City.
Whooping cough on the increase Interior Health is seeing an increase in pertussis cases, also known as whooping cough, and would like to remind parents about the importance of making sure their children’s immunizations are up to date. Pertussis activity is being seen across the region with the majority of cases currently in the Central Okanagan. “Infants under one year of age are most at risk for serious complications from pertussis,” said Dr. Kamran Golmohammadi, Medical Health Officer with Interior Health. “Pertussis starts with similar symptoms to a common cold, including runny nose, sore throat and mild fever and then progresses to a cough. The cough can become severe, with or without a classic whooping sound and may be accompanied by gasping, gagging, shortness of breathing and vomiting. In serious cases it can lead to pneu-
monia, seizures, brain damage or even death.” Immunization is the best way to prevent the spread of this disease. The pertussis vaccine is part of the routine childhood vaccinations that are given at two months, four months, six months, and 18 months old, and again at age four to six years, before Kindergarten. A pertussis vaccine is also given to teens at 14 to 16 years of age in BC. “We are strongly advising all parents to ensure their children are immunized so they are not at risk,” adds Dr. Golmohammadi. “The pertussis vaccine is very safe and effective in preventing the spread of this disease.” Parents are advised to check their child’s immunization record and make sure they are up to date. Information about accessing immunization records can be found at ImmunizeBC.
To discuss pertussis immunization for children or to book an appointment contact your local public health centre. Adults who have not been immunized for pertussis can contact their local pharmacy to inquire about getting the vaccine. For more information on whooping cough and immunization online go to www.healthlink.ca or www.immunizebc.ca or call your local public health centre, which is listed under Health Authorities in the blue pages of your telephone directory. Interior Health is committed to promoting healthy lifestyles and providing a wide range of quality healthcare services to more than 742,000 people living across BC’s vast interior.
