Farewell to another exciting year!
Why is it the older you get, the quicker the days and years seem to roll by. It seems like just yesterday when we were saying goodbye to 2010 and now 2011 has almost passed us by. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays already gone, now is as good of time as any to take a look back and try to remember what it was we did this year. Being involved with the Echo has great benefits. You get a first hand look at all the new, interesting and maybe not so interesting stuff that is happening in our neighbourhoods. Good news especially! People can never wait to share good news and there is plenty of it. This year on the North Shore was yet another year of change. The Big Little Science Centre changed renaissance homes; moving from retirement residence Bert Edwards Science and Technology School to the nearly Care staff on duty 24 hours empty George Hilliard on Holt 628 opened Tranquille Road Street. We can’t say some of us didn’t fight dirty, but it was definitely great fun on a great day. We always enjoy heading over to Gardengate to see their Pumpkins of Light and trips get some awesome fresh and organic veggies and plants, this year their summer salsa competition was top-notch with so many great teams competing as well we always enjoy heading to MacDonald Park to take in some great local music during Music in the Park and even enjoy Fridays Farmers’ Market at Spirit Square. Greetings for the holidays Dear Friends, I wanted to send some sort of holiday greeting to you, but it is difficult in today’s world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So I met with my lawyer yesterday and on his advice I wish to say the following: Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday practised with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious / secular persuasions and / or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendar of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that Canada is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee. By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her / him or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. The wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher. Best Regards (without prejudice), Name withheld (Privacy Act). Or simply said Best Wishes and Merry Christmas to you and yours for 2012. ~Wenda, Penny, Erin, Carrie, Cristina, Marilee, Wayne, Ian, Will, Arlene and Tanya.

Yet another highlight for the Echo this year was when the British Columbia Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada awarded the Echo Newspaper with the 2010 Print Media Award (Interior Region) for editorial support of awareness and fundraising campaigns, including Kidney Health Month, World Kidney Day, and The Kidney Walk. The Echo’s freelance writer Tanya Ozorco (L) accepted the award on behalf of the Echo Newspaper from Linda Bonner-Brown, patient services volunteer at the B.C Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Marg Archibald (R), manager of the Sahali Centre Mall, was also on hand to accept an award for her enthusiastic support of World Kidney Day, including purchasing ads, involving the mall’s stores in the event, enhancing the information display with a mannequin labelled to show where the kidneys are located, and providing a big screen presentation of the dialysis procedure.
Rolling from Chase to California Hello, Echo readers. 2012 has been an exciting year! In addition to the fun events that happen downtown, Taste of Downtown being one of my favourite, I was able to take a vacation and join an exciting new team sport this year. My husband Derek and I visited my brother and his family in Aliso Viejo. It’s about an hour drive south of Los Angeles. Ken and Rachael have two beautiful boys, Paul and Luke, who was only one-month old at the time. We also visited Disneyland and Universal Studios being that it was my first time in California! Last February I went along with freelance writer Tanya Orozco to watch the Tournament City Derby Dolls practice. It happened to be

a fresh meat night (that’s “recruitment” in roller derby language). At first I couldn’t stand in roller saktes, but by the end of the night I was skating around the gym somewhat confidently. Ever since that night I have been skating two times a week with the Derby Dolls. I passed my skating skills test in August and played in my first roller derby bout (game) in November! I am hoping that a move to Kamloops will be in the stars for 2012. A shorter commute would be nice! Does anyone want a vacation home in the Shuswap? Happy New Year everyone! Entering a decade of good news We have just wrapped up our ninth year of publishing your favourite little newspapers, the Downtown and North Shore Echo! As we embark upon our tenth year it dawns on me that following our dreams really does make them come to life. What started out as a novel thought, that each and every person has a story to tell and that we all need to hear some good news once in awhile, has transformed into the Downtown and North Shore Echo. Bringing good news to our neighbours is never tiresome and it’s so nice to hear many of our readers say, “I love that little paper!” As the holiday season comes to a close it is only natural to spend some time reflecting on the year past and all that has happened in it. There have been good times and bad, tragedy and joy and above all else a community who never quits. The holiday season is a time to take a break and revel in the appreciation of family and those who make a difference in your life and we are proud to call the people who inhabit the Downtown and North Shore neighbourhoods our family. Not only do we have the fortune of interacting with many of you on a daily basis, but we thoroughly enjoy helping you spread the good news that separates Kamloops from so many other communities. As a city, Kamloops must have the biggest heart in the nation, as around every corner there is good news. Fundraisers, charity events, people helping people, there is no shortage of happy news stories and as a business we have taken it on as our mandate to help promote the good in our community. New Year’s is usually the time for out with the old and in with the new and although our neighbourhoods have seen many changes in the last year it is

Echo publisher Wenda Noonan felt the need to try out the inflatable slide during the North Shore’s Biggest Sale in October. Once she reached the top, she remembered she had a fear of heights. Lucky for the other sliders, who were going up the ladder, she also has a fear of embarrasment and although she was terrified, and being mocked from the small children (and one adult) below, chose to take the plunge. Placing one leg on each side of the slide, to slow her descent, she screamed all the way to the bottom!
the old that makes the city so good. It is the dedicated business owners who through good times and bad have made these neighbourhoods their home, it is for the special people who work here, the ones who strive for excellence and are dedicated to improving life in the city. It’s the old-timers and their hard work that have made it possible for all the new guys to come in. From all of us here at The Echo to you and yours, we wish you a very, very happy new year and wish you all peace, prosperity and health for the upcoming year. Wenda Noonan, publisher

editorial/Opinion
Carrie’s year of new adventure Although I didn’t spend the entire 2011 year here at the Echo, the time that I have spent has been action packed and full of learning. I originally came to Kamloops ten years ago in search of a job as a nail tech, so you can imagine my surprise all these years later doing something totally unrelated. My journey here at the paper started in March and it has been adventurous ever since. Only four months had passed and I was already filling in as editor. In the nine months here I have learnt so much about downtown and have enjoyed all the different events, activities and festivals. Everything from racing Tanya at the 2nd annual scooter rodeo, eating my way around downtown at the Taste of Downtown to seeing my very first play with Wenda and Tanya at Mainstage. Outside of work was also adventurous. I spent summer days kayaking and got my nose pierced as well I also went to my very first pow wow, saw Johnny Winter and took my boys to Fright Nights at Playland. I have had such a great year meeting all the awesome people who come into and pass by the Echo and can’t wait to make many more memories in 2012. Now as soon as it snows enough I am going to go out and use the snow shoes I got for my birthday. I can’t wait to try them out. Happy Holidays! Carrie Harman is the administrator and editor at the North Shore and Downtown Echo.
During the North Shore’s Biggest Sale in October, I was harassed into trying the gladiator ring by our freelance writer’s daughter and needless to say, she won (although I thought Carly was cheating just a little!)
KFR couplings used in Firefighters Memorial Editor’s note: Imagine my surprise when I read the media release about the Firefighters Memorial only to see my family name! The Harman Foundry was established in 1962 by my Great Uncle Jack and was the first sculpture foundry in B.C., later to be taken over by his son Stephen after Jack’s passing in 2001. Many works are permanent features around the Vancouver area such as: Bannister and Landy’s Miracle Mile at the PNE, Harry Jerome in Stanley Park, Themis Goddess of Justice and Lord Denning in the Vancouver Law Courts. Needless to say, I am very proud to have such amazing artists in my family! In the spring of 2011, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) submitted brass hose couplings to the Harman Foundry in Red Deer, Alberta. These hose couplings have been in service at KFR since the early 1960s. Last week, KFR was informed that these couplings will be used in the
casting of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa. This memorial has been in the works for over a decade and is scheduled to officially open in 2012. The bronze elements are scheduled to be completed in March 2012 and delivered to Ottawa in early April. The official dedication of the new memorial and remembrance ceremony will take place in September 2012. This will be the first memorial for firefighters across Canada, allowing them a place in Ottawa to honour those who gave their lives serving their communities. The bronze elements are being manufactured in Red Deer, Alberta at the Harman Foundry. The Harman Foundry has done some significant works in the past such as the Terry Fox Memorials in Ottawa and Vancouver, and the Parliament Hill bronze statue of Queen Elizabeth on horseback.

Trevor’s New Year’s Eve party was an annual occurrence with numerous guests arriving. During the evening, a man knocked on the door, was greeted heartily although no one knew who he was, and was led to where the drinks were, in the kitchen. He sat there happily, chatting away, for a couple of hours before a strange light dawned on his face. “You know,’ he confided to Trevor. “I wasn’t even invited to this party. I just came over to tell you that some of your guests’ cars are blocking my drive. He continued, “My wife’s been sitting out in the car waiting for me to get them moved, so that we can go out.

Erin Johnson, Natasha Lyndon and Carrie Harman decided to share their love of Halloween with the rest of the office this year!
A New Year’s Eve surprise
Jenny was taking an afternoon nap on New Year’s Eve before the festivities. After she woke up, she confided to Max, her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a New Year’s present. What do you think it all means? “Aha, you’ll know tonight, answered Max smiling broadly. At midnight, as the New Year was chiming, Max approached Jenny and handed her small package. Delighted and excited she opened it quickly. There in her hand rested a book entitled: “The meaning of dreams.
It’s a winter wonderland I just got off the phone with a friend living in North Dakota near the Canadian border. He said that since early this morning the snow has been coming down, it is nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping way

below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.
Ode to Winter
It’s winter in Canada And the gentle breezes blow Seventy miles an hour At thirty-five below. 0Oh, how I love Canada When the snow’s up to your butt You take a breath of winter And your nose gets frozen shut. Yes, the weather here is wonderful So I guess I’ll hang around I could never leave Canada Cuz I’m frozen to the ground! Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits. ~Author Unknown

I am very happy, I didn’t realize what a difference they would make. I now hear my turn signal in my car, I have turned the car radio down from 9 to 3! I wear them from morning to night.
