ProPASS – An economical and green way to travel to work! The City of Kamloops and BC Transit have a hassle free way for you to take the bus. Purchased through your employer via regular payroll deduction for only $44 per month, ProPASS offers unlimited travel on transit service throughout Kamloops. “Go green and save green!” says Colleen Lepik, City of Kamloops Transportation Coordinator. “By taking transit, ProPASS users help reduce rush hour congestion and their carbon footprint, plus...save money! With skyrocketing gas prices, taking the bus is an affordable way to commute to work.” Compared to monthly bus pass holders, ProPASS users save $108 a year, and like monthly bus passes, ProPASS is tax deductible. In addition to saving you money, ProPASS is a permanent bus pass so you no longer have to remember to buy a bus pass every month or have change or bus tickets on hand. The ProPASS program now allows for up to two additional adult family members living in the same household as the ProPASS holder to also sign up for ProPASS and take advantage of the discounted rate. Sign up for ProPASS before April 22 (Earth

Day) and you could win an e-book reader! Already have a ProPASS? Tell the City your transit story and why you’re a ProPASS user and you could win an e-book reader too! Employers will find ProPASS as easy to administer as a payroll deduction to the United Way. And, with more employees taking the bus instead of driving to work, employers

may even find that more valuable parking spaces are freed up for their customers. Employers who register for ProPASS before July 1 will receive six months free onboard bus advertising. For more details, contact Colleen at clepik@kamloops.ca. For more information, visit www.kamloops.ca/ propass.

Aboriginal groups receive educational grants

Interior Health’s Aboriginal Health program has awarded 16 educational grants to Aboriginal not-for-profit organizations and governments across the region to enhance the public health skill sets of aboriginal residents. Priority was given to grant applications that would have a broad impact on the public health of Aboriginal populations; training programs are expected to: have previously proven beneficial outcomes, have the support of, or be recognized by, public health officials and take a partnership approach and foster relationships with other Aboriginal organizations.

The educational grants, which each total no more than $20,000, will be used for a variety of programs including palliative care certificates, mental health first

aid, suicide prevention training and substance abuse certification through the Justice Institute of B.C. There are 44,900 Aboriginal

people living within the Interior Health region, representing 6.3 percent of the population, which includes 55 First Nation communities and 16,200 Métis people.

KYSA offering more coaching clinics this spring

The Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) has two coaching courses slated for the end of this month: the FUNDamendals clinic, which is tailored to coaches working with players in the U7 to U9 age groups, and the introductory Active Start clinic, for coaches working with players in the U5 and U6 divisions. The FUNdamentals Course is scheduled for March 31 from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the Soccer Dome. The KYSA will reimburse any Kamloopsbased coaches 50 percent upon completion of the course and the other 50 percent after the coach has

The Active Start course is free and is set to run from 10:00am to 2:00pm on April 1 at the Soccer Dome. Anyone wishing to register for either course must sign-up through the BC Soccer Association. House and Home Show a great success

About twenty-five hundred consumers filled the Kamloops Convention Centre on Saturday, March 10 at the 6th Annual House and Home Show. This event, hosted by CHBA CI, focused on home building and renovating, energy efficiency and “green initiatives”. Close to sixty exhibitors enjoyed showcasing their products from 9:30am to 4:30pm. “The Pro Knows” was a very successful component of the show as the public was offered an opportunity to pre- book complimentary 30 minute consultations with builders, renovators, contractors and suppliers. This was of great interest to consumers seeking advice on their personal home projects. “From a trade show perspective, this was a new and innovative idea to have prebooked appointments and personal consultations”, said Scott Pimblott of A&T Project Developments.

Darcy Franklin of Meranti Developments said “The Pro Knows” really provided a unique forum for people to get some sound advice in a professional setting. Hopefully the public found the event as beneficial as we did.” Darryl Caunt of the Mibroc Group added “The Pro Knows” sessions were a great success for us as a builder but more importantly for potential clients who took time to meet with all of the professionals. The sessions made it efficient to meet with several Pro’s in a comfortable, relaxed setting.” Ebeth Patenio won two VIP tickets to the Rick Mercer show and Kim Morton was the lucky winner of the Maytag Energy Star Washer and Dryer. Seventh anniversary for World Down Syndrome Day Each year March 21 is designated as World Down Syndrome Day. This year marks the seventh anniversary of the day and for the first time this day will be officially observed by the United Nations. Each year the voice of people with Down Syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder. But there is still so much that can be done. Educating people about what Down Syndrome is and what it means to have Down Syndrome as well as raising awareness within the community on how people with Down Syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities are key focuses of World Down Syndrome Day Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused by an error in cell division that results in an extra 21st chromosome. The condition leads to impairments in both cognitive ability and physical growth that range from mild to moderate developmental disabilities. Less than one in 1,000 pregnancies for mothers less than 35 years of age results in a baby with Down Syndrome but this is known to increase with the age of the mother. Although many people with Down Syndrome experience developmental delays, it is not uncommon for those with Down syndrome to attend

school and become active, working members in the community. It’s critical that our communities consider all members as being equal, having access to the opportunities that society offers and have the chance to contribute positively to the strength and variety of our social fabric. Join thousands of people from around the globe on March 21 and

help to create a single voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well being of people with Down Syndrome. For more information on World Down Syndrome Day go to www. worlddownsyndromeday.org For local support on Down syndrome contact:Thompson Nicola Ups and Downs Society

Dear Editor, I follow with interest the discussions around city council’s many in-camera meetings. I was told “the number has gone down over the years”. A meaningless if interesting comment. The Kenna Cartwright Park switch, the water treatment plant, and other huge projects of the past do not have a current counterpart that would require a stack of secret meetings. There are fewer council meetings in general, so of course the number of in-camera meetings would decline as well. Labour, law and land. Nothing else can be in-camera. Three small but well guarded secrets that the public should know are these: 1. If you write a letter to council and you’d like them to do something,

write “For Action” in the subject line. It’s the code word. 2. If you write a letter and want it to go to every councilor, email it to citycouncil@kamloops.ca 3. If you write a letter and want it to show up in the minutes, send it to legislate@kamloops.ca Secret handshakes? Think of those as council’s business deals that turn out to be bad judgment ones in hindsight. Eg. the smartmeters that are being foisted on mostly unsuspecting Kamloopsians without their knowledge. It’s acceptable to use one, two or all three of these “secret codes”. Council of course, can still ignore your issue, but they will have done so with a tiny bit of publicity. Christina Mader, PhD

There is a business here on the North Shore and it is one of a kind. Gotta Have It Consignment is a very unassuming place and may easily be overlooked driving along Tranquille Road, but what a treat when you walk in. Instantly it became apparent that this was not you average consignment store. Initially, I thought that perhaps the owner, Petra Woehle just lucked out with a few amazing antique pieces that she displayed in the front room. I soon realized that this was not luck. Petra, who was busy with a customer, invited me in to feel free to look around the store. I was amazed. Room after room was adorned with unique furniture, home dĂŠcor and collectables. Petra clearly has an eye for the gems and a true hunters ability to scope them out! I am certainly not the only one too agree. Petra told me about a recent visit from former curator, Peter Malkin of the Vancouver Art Gallery. He agreed and paid an incredible compliment, saying that Gotta Have It was “the nicest antiques store he had ever been in.â€? High praise from such a seasoned veteran of beauty. As amazing as the pieces themselves are, there is another reason to shop here and that is Petra herself. A former bookkeeper who has turned her hobby into a successful business, it had been Petra’s dream and passion for 30 years to have her own store. In addition to being welcoming, caring and entertaining, she prides herself on giving her customers exceptional service. Part of her service includes assisting people with downsizing and estate sales. She understands the complexity and emotional toll in dealing with estates. Petra and her team ensure your needs are handled with discretion, honesty integrity while being efficient and organized. Petra invites you to come and meet her and take a look around. You just might find something you gotta have.

Smart meter application dismissed

The BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) issued a decision recently dismissing an application by an anti-smart meter group to place an injunction on the project. The BCUC dismissed the group’s premise that the technology used in the new meters exceeded the authority of the Province’s Clean Energy Act. The decision came as the BC Hydro smart metering project nears the halfway mark of installations with widespread customer acceptance of the meters and their benefits. BC Hydro has installed over 890,000 new meters to date, which represents just under half of its 1.85 million customers. Over 99 per cent of customers are accepting a smart meter and more than 1,800 customers who initially asked for their smart meter installation to be put on hold have agreed to have one installed after being provided more infor-

er

mation about the program. BC Hydro is responsible for providing safe, reliable power to British Columbians and smart meters are an important part of that responsibility by helping modernize B.C.’s electricity infrastructure.

The new meters have been confirmed safe by health and science authorities including B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer. For more information on BC Hydro’s smart meter program, please visit www.bchydro.com/ smartmeters.

Hold up your credit cards! Back in the days of the Mattel Cabbage Patch Kid craze it was usually very hard to get one for the kiddies. A radio station (I don’t know where) announced that Mattel was going to get Cabbage Patch Kids out to the people of this particular city. The plan was that they had to go to the football field of the local university and wait. An airplane would fly

overhead and the dolls would be dropped onto the field. People were supposed to hold their credit cards up so that a photographer with a telephoto lens in the airplane could get the credit card numbers and charge the price of the dolls to the recipients’ accounts. One radio station prank took place on April Fool’s Day. They announced that the phone company would be cleaning the dirt out of the phone lines that afternoon. They do this, it seems, by blowing air into the wires in the switching station. The problem is that the dirt comes out of the earpiece and mouthpiece of the telephone and could dirty the rugs or furniture in your house. Consequently, the phone company asks that the good citizens please get plastic bags and put them over the handsets of the telephones to protect their belongings. Stores reported a run on plastic bags and the phone company made the radio station retract the original claim.

Prank the kids with food Just to mess with your kids. Cut up some hotdogs and before cooking them poke strands of spaghetti into each end. Boil until the spaghetti is al dente and voila you have a spaghetti octopus. Not only will it amaze your kids, but we bet your partner will wonder how you did it too!

Entertaining for your support

The Kamloops Foundation is making a difference in our region every day and more can be done with your help. This year the Foundation’s focus is on increasing its Community Grants Fund by a minimum of $500,000 to meet future granting needs. Donations to the foundation are never spent but the investment income is returned to the community annually. As the fund grows, more income will be generated, and that means more grants to help non-profit organizations achieve their charitable goals. On Saturday, March 31, the Kamloops Foundation presents its first Dinner, Dance and Auction Fundraiser at the Colombo FBS 1.16 June Lodge. 8.indd 1 Tickets are just $50 each with a $20 tax receipt provided to the purchaser.

This event promises to be as much about fun as it is about funds, with the cocktail hour beginning at 6:00 pm., the Colombo Lodge’s traditional spaghetti dinner at 7:00 pm followed by dancing, dozens of unique opportunities in the silent auction, and more special draws and prizes – all for a great cause – your community! You can help by attending the event or contributing a silent auction item. Tables seat parties of ten or you can come on your own and you can be seated with other community supporters. Tickets are available from Kamloops Foundation Board Members and at many locations throughout our city. For more information, contact Tania O’Toole 250-434-6995 or info@ kamloopsfoundation.com.

Kids say the darndest things... A mother and her young son returned from the grocery store and began putting away the groceries. The boy opened the box of animal crackers and spread them all over the table. “What are you doing? his mother asked. “The box says not to eat them if the seal is broken, the boy explained. “I’m looking for the seal. !4%# MARCH INDD
