Volunteers key to Christmas Kettle campaign As you may have already noticed, there are bells ringing and jingling around the city. The Annual Christmas Kettle Campaign is underway with volunteers braving the cold to help raise money for the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is a fundraising effort that occurs each year during the Christmas season. Kettles are found in 2,000 locations across Canada and are an opportunity for the public to donate whatever funds they can to support the work of The Salvation Army during the Christmas season and throughout the year. This campaign is also aimed at raising money and awareness about the continued need for social service programs and resources to support vulnerable individuals throughout British Columbia during the holiday season and year-round. The Annual Christmas Kettle will run until December 24. The Christmas Kettles have been in Kamloops since 1917. “It has been a tradition,” comments Heather McQueen, kettle coordinator at the Salvation Army. “The kettles help support our operating budget for the year. The more donations that we receive, the more programing and services we can offer. Also, the money stays local.” Heather is involved in many areas within the Salvation Army,

Theresa Lidster graciously donates to Linda Park’s Salvation Army Christmas Kettle.

but the kettles hold a special meaning for her. “The foundation for the Salvation Army is its volunteers,” adds Heather from her six years of helping out with the kettle. “It is their focus to make

sure those kettles get manned that makes this campaign successful.” George and Linda Park, have been volunteering with the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles for at least half a decade.

“We are not Salvation Army members, we just believe in what they do,” comments Linda. Her and her husband first started with the Salvation Army serving warm meals to those in need. It was during this time, they got to see first hand those who are struggling and benefit from the Salvation Army’s support. “The response from the public is heartwarming. Sometimes people get teary when they are putting money into the kettle,” says Linda. “I once had a well dressed young mother stop. She had teary eyes and put money into the kettle. She then told me that her family ate at the Salvation Army for two years. When you are standing out there in the cold, it gives you appreciation for those who have nowhere to go.” Another dedicated volunteer who spends three hours of every day manning the kettle is Ray Ward. He has been volunteering with the Kettle Campaign for over five years. “I do it every day of the 35 days the kettle is on. I picked 11:00am to 2:00 pm because I am 83 years-old and I forget where I am sometimes,” jokes Ray. “I do the same place, the same time everyday to make sure I know where I am suppose to be.” With that said, he wishes that more people got involved. “This is a town of 80,000 and - continued on page 2

- continued from front Heather has a hard time to get enough people to man the kettles. There should be plenty of people to do it,” comments Ray. Ray volunteers because he can see the need for help, also because he firmly believes in the Salvation Army’s work. He never expects any thanks, but was surprised two years ago with a heartfelt gesture of gratitude from a very unlikely place. “A little girl handed me a card. I didn’t open until I got home. Inside it said, ‘God bless you for doing this work.’ She signed her name and said she was ten-years-old. I appreciated that,” a choked up Ray adds. You will find volunteers at kettle stations located at Walmart,

Aberdeen Mall, Canadian Tire on the North Shore, Extra Foods, Columbia Signature Liquor, London Drugs, North Hills Mall, Save On Foods, Super Store and North Hills Liquor. They also get a few days at Costco. The need for outside volunteers is great and the Salvation Army would appreciate those brave enough to take on the chilly weather to sign up to volunteer. If you would like to volunteer, please call the kettle cellphone at 250-819-0017. The next time you are at the grocery store, or out shopping, take the time to acknowledge the dedication of the Salvation Army Kettle bell ringers and put some change into the kettle to support those in need in Kamloops. Canada Post action plan to reduce debt to take effect in the New Year Among the announced Canada Post service changes to reduce their debt is that the one third of Canadian households receiving their mail at their door will be converted to community mailbox delivery. Prices for stamps will increase from 63 cents to 85 cents each if bought in a pack and individual stamps will cost a dollar. These stamp price changes will take effect March 31, 2014. Canada Post will also be opening more franchise postal outlets in stores across Canada. They will also be streamlining operations by using faster computerized sorting equipment), consolidation (such as processing mail and parcels in a central location) and providing more delivery

employees with fuel-efficient vehicles, so the same employee can deliver both mail and parcels. With all of these changes Canada Post will require fewer employees to serve the future needs of Canadians. They are planning to reduce 8,000 positions. Canada Post hopes the implementation of this plan will allow them to return to financial sustainability by 2019. The first communities that will switch to community mailboxes will be announced in the second half of 2014. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District Board of Directors has elected Barriere Mayor Bill Humphreys as its new Chair. The election took place during the Board’s inaugural meeting in Kamloops. “There is a lot of strength on the Board and I’m looking forward to continuing to work to harness that power,” says Bill. “We want to keep a sense of continuity in our actions as we move forward.” The Board also elected Electoral Area “B” (Thompson Headwaters) Director Willow MacDonald as vice-chair.

Volunteers keep the vulnerable out of the cold Dear Editor, Each winter, volunteers in communities throughout British Columbia activate a network of temporary emergency winter shelters to make sure that everyone has warm, safe shelter when cold weather threatens the health and safety of people who are homeless. The Province has allocated $1.5 million in funding to have these spaces available when our weather is at its worst. It is community volun-

teers who ensure that they are open and that people have a warm, safe place to stay. These shelters are an invaluable service, providing more than 21,000 bed nights last winter. Over the last week, cold winter conditions throughout the province have kept these shelters open every night in a number of communities. This is an act that would not be possible without these dedicated volunteers, who open the doors, lay out mats and blankets and pre-

pare a hot pot of coffee to chase away the cold. Their warmth and kindness does more than provide a bed, it creates hope in a place where it can be all too easily extinguished. As the minister responsible for housing, I know there are stories like this happening each day, each hour, in communities both large and small. I am grateful for the commitment of agencies and individuals who care so deeply for their neighbours, for people who

are often invisible on our streets. I am honoured to work with them in our collective efforts to end homelessness. To these volunteers, and to everyone who gives to those in need, I want to express my gratitude and my thanks. Your efforts make a difference to the lives of so many and help create better communities for all of us. Sincerely, Rich Coleman Minister of Housing and Social Development

Christmas with Moose Lodge Friendships and family enrich our lives, especially during the holidays. It is the time of year which we want to celebrate with those we love. Some are not so fortunate to still have family in their lives, but they are blessed to have friends. On the North Shore, located within the North Shore Community Centre, is a group of friends who look after each other, the Loyal Order of the Moose. The Loyal Order of the Moose has been active in Kamloops for many generations. They are well know from the days the Moose Lodge was on Fortune Drive where they hosted many social events. There were weddings, parties, crib playing, dancing and holiday celebrations. This building was sold and the Moose moved into their new location inside the North Shore Community Centre at 730 Cottonwood Avenue. A fully licensed and private facility, the new lodge is the place to go when you want to socialize, play games and partake in festive cheer. Jack Buchanan is the Moose Lodge administrator and has been so for many, many years. Along side him is Buckley Lord, the treasurer. This dynamic duo works hard to keep giving back to the community around them. “We don’t have to be here. We like giving back to the community, working with the people that we get to and bring some joy to peoples’ lives,” comments Jack about the

Lodge’s donations to the community and hosting events at the Cottonwood Centre. “I like the social aspect of it. My friends are here and this is a great place for us to gather,” further adds Buckley. The Moose Lodge places special emphasis on giving back to the community through a wide range of service programs. Wherever and whatever the need, they are there, giving of their time and effort to make our community a better place in which to live. They host special events for the Grey Cup, Stanley Cup, World Cup, Remembrance Day, New Years Day, bridge groups and birthday parties. “There are a lot of people here who don’t have a lot of family. We are their sudo family,” says Jack. If you are looking for something to do, head down to the Moose Lodge for some drinks, snacks and good company. Members come from all walks of life, from manufacturing and trades to salespeople and corporate professionals. The diverse group of friends you will make as a member of the Moose will increase your connections in your local community. “It is a great place to be a member,” comments Jack. For more information about the Moose Lodge, visit them at the North Shore Community Centre or reach them by phone at 250376-8022. Ashley Demedeiros

Graham Cope, a long-time Westsyde resident and father of two children who play on Kamloops Youth Soccer Association teams, has been returned as President of the Association for 2014 –– the seventh consecutive year that he has presided over the organization that registers approximately 3600 players annually. Graham, a financial planner by profession, has been a member of the KYSA executive for eight years. Colin Guise, who lives in Brocklehurst, has been re-elected Vice-President for the coming year. This will be Colin’s second year as VP. Colin is also an active referee in the soccer community and is the father of two girls who both play and referee in the KYSA. As Vice-President, Colin serves as chair of the Volunteer Screening and Discipline Committee. In his first year in the position, he was largely responsible for ensuring all team managers, coaches and assistant coaches complied with the organization’s Criminal Record Check policy and had a completion rate of almost 100% in 2013. All team officials in the KYSA have to complete a CRC on an annual basis. The President and VicePresident of the youth soccer governing body are elected from within the seven-person executive, all of whom are volunteers. The election of the President and Vice-President was conducted on the night of December 9 at the first meeting of the board following the KYSA AGM, which was held on November 28th.

Newly elected KYSA director Chris Wilkinson will serve as Treasurer while another newcomer to the board, Art McDonald, will oversee the Girls Mini-Soccer Program (U5 to U12). Ryan Susheski, who was also elected to the board at the AGM, will oversee the Boys Mini-Soccer Program (U5 to U12). Long-term director Sharon Cadieux will supervise activity in the Association’s “Youth” age groups, which encompasses the U13 to U18 age groups. She will also continue to chair the Association’s Employment Committee. KYSA Director Tony Cuzzetto will chair the committee that guides the Rep Program.

Preserving affordable housing

kidsport support

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and Subway are helping to raise money for Kidsport. The Kamloops Storm did their part by going to Subway restaurants and raising money from patrons and staff. One of the staff at Subway donated $500! They raised about $1,100 in two days and hope to do that and more by visiting more Subway Restaurants in the New Year. Two Subway employees came to the Storm game December 7 and helped to raise even more money. Shown are Joy and Kathleen at the Storm game. Kidsport in Kamloops has helped 834 kids participate in sport over the last six years, an investment of over $230,000. To donate contact the Storm office at 250-376-0990 or emailed them at dewar@vip.net or contact Kidsport at canderson@kamloops.ca. Subway a proud partner in this effort and a great community supporter.

Storm are number one in the KIJHL After a 12 game winning streak the Kamloops Storm are currently the number one team in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). Until December 22 they will be giving away ten any game tickets for the price of five. In addition, at all of their games

where they win and score five or more goals they will be giving away a free Dominos pizza. At many games they host entertainment during the intermissions for additional fun. Head over to McArthur Park and enjoy some fast paced, talented hockey and support the local boys of the Kamloops Storm.

Affordable apartments for 70 low income families and individuals will be preserved, thanks to $3.9 million in funding from the governments of Canada and B.C. for renovations that will extend the life of the Sundergreen development in Kamloops. “Our government is pleased to be a partner in the renovation project for Sundergreen,” says Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification on behalf of the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development. “This is yet another commitment to providing affordable housing which in turn helps to build a stronger community and improve housing conditions in Kamloops.” “The renovations to Sundergreen will extend the life of the buildings and keep these affordable homes available in Kamloops for years to come,” says Terry Lake, Minister of Health and MLA for KamloopsNorth Thompson. “From rental assistance, to new units, to renovations on existing properties, the B.C. Government invests in a wide range of social housing options to help low and middle income people in our community.” Built in 1970, the BC housingmanaged Sundergreen development consists of two 35-unit apartment buildings, at 230 Clapperton Road and 335 Mulberry Aveenue. The development will benefit from renovations that include renewal of the building envelope components, new windows and sliding doors, repairs to balconies and updates to the security system and plumbing fixtures. The Federal Provincial Housing initiative is a component of the

$180 million Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 20112014 Agreement between the governments of Canada and British Columbia, which was announced in July 2011. With matching contributions of $90 million from both levels of government, this total combined investment helps to support affordable housing programs for B.C. residents. Annually, the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), will invest approximately $2 billion in housing. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of close to 594,000 households living in existing social housing. In British Columbia, this represents an estimated 68,050 households. The remaining funding supports housing-related activities and affordable housing programs, including the Investment in Affordable Housing. These investments are improving the quality of life for low-income Canadians and households living in existing social housing, including individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, seniors, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and Aboriginal people. Economic Action Plan 2013 continues this commitment with a federal investment of more than $1.25 billion over five years to renew the Investment in Affordable Housing to 2019. The Government of Canada will ensure that funds provided to provinces and territories support the use of apprentices, which will support training of skilled labour. More than 146,769 households across Canada are no longer in housing need as a result of funding provided under the IAH from April 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013.

SPCA cleared to partially open following Ringworm quarantine The ringworm fiasco at the Kamloops SPCA is nearly over. They have been cleared to partially open on Monday December 16. They are opening adoptions of the following during this week: eight dogs, 16 cats/kittens, two rabbits and one gerbil. They are still waiting on results of ten dogs and 21 cats/kitten. They also have 30 animals in foster that will be coming back into the shelter as they get more space. They are not accepting animals at this time as their intake is still under quarantine and they do not have space. You can contact them to be put

on the waitlist. They will be open from 12:00 to 4:30 pm. They are excited for their animals to find their forever homes as they have been patiently waiting and enduring treatment to get to this point. It has been a long six weeks. They will also be offering a 50 per cent reduced adoption fee from December 16 to January 4 on cats, kittens and rabbits in their care. They were cleared to partially open on Monday and this could expand dependent on further results received. Please visit the spca.bc.ca/kamloops for more information.
