City green cleaning

Digging in the dirt…and more!

During the United Way’s Days of Caring, 13 KPMG volunteers were helping complete several projects at Gardengate, 915 Southill Street, which aims to promote healthy eating and active living for persons living with mental health issues. The volunteers helped extend the greenhouse, increase the garden walls and weed the garden. They are always looking for volunteers. Don’t forget you can buy local produce at Gardengate Monday through Friday between 11am and 12:30pm! Inset: Melinda Harding and Andrea Bingham digging their second hole with only eight more to go! Good job, ladies!

New community dialysis unit to improve kidney care

A new Community Dialysis Unit (CDU) is expected soon in North Kamloops. This will allow stable kidney patients access to care outside of Royal Inland Hospital. “Current and future patients in Kamloops and the surrounding area will benefit from dialysis services as close to home as possible,” says Kamloops North Thompson MLA Terry Lake. “The introduction of a dialysis unit in the community is great news.” Funded by the BCRA and operated by Interior Health, the new CDU is expected to open in Spring 2013 in a centrally located leased space on the North Shore. The new unit will feature eight dialysis stations, plus space for additional stations to meet future need. The unit will incorporate an involved care/patient self management model, which empowers patients to gradually increase their level of independence within a supportive environment, leading to improved quality of life and physical and mental well being. This model offers an opportunity for patients to set individual goals, learn new skills and gain control over their health. “We are really excited to be working with the BC Renal Agency to provide this specialized service in the community,” says Interior Health Board Chair

Norman Embree. “The self management model will help patients live as independent and healthy a life as possible – something we are always striving to achieve.” The design of the Kamloops CDU will align with national standards, to feature: Dialysis stations: Upon opening, eight stations will be equipped and operational, with space reserved for additional bays to meet future capacity. Seven stations will be open and one will offer extra privacy. A multipurpose consultation/training room for patient and family consultations with nursing staff and visiting clinicians, family case conferences, group education sessions, and team conferences with tele/video conferencing capability; A multipurpose exam/consultation room for oneon-one patient exams, consultations, and training; Nursing area: A combined nursing and reception area to act as a central hub for nursing care; and A biomed/reverse osmosis supply room: These two areas will provide space for the maintenance of the dialysis machines and dedicated space for a full heat sanitized reverse osmosis water system. Interior Health Renal Medical Director Dr. Marie Michaud says, “Helping patients achieve self management and home dialysis means greater freedom and more control of their schedules.”

The City of Kamloops currently uses about 6,000 litres of cleaning chemicals per year to clean its many buildings, facilities and vehicles. Recognizing the potential impact of these chemicals on the environment, the Sustainability Department saw an opportunity to start replacing these chemicals with alternative products or technologies. After extensive research, consultation with various City departments and a thorough bid process, the City identified the Lotus Pro product to start replacing these chemicals. The Lotus Pro device uses electrical energy to create ozone from the air we breathe. This ozone is water-soluble and is infused into tap water, creating liquefied ozone. Liquefied ozone is much safer than gaseous ozone and unlike many chemicals, it produces no emitted gases. This new technology will replace up to 70 percent of the current cleaning chemical products used by the City including disinfectants such as bleach; deodorizers such as Liqui-Bac; and cleaning products such as Mr Clean and Windex. Various City departments including Parks, Fire and Building Maintenance plan on using this new technology to clean everything from windows, mirrors, counters, floors, appliances, bathrooms, vehicles, carpets and fabric. The technology has been proven to kill viruses, bacteria including E.coli, salmonella, MRSA, C-difficile, and hundreds of other common germs. It removes stains and odors and is 3000 times faster and much stronger than chlorine bleach and chlorine-based cleaners. However, it is non-toxic to people and our environment. It reverts to water and oxygen after cleaning and sanitizing, and is 100 percent chemicalfree, leaving no residual vapors or chemicals. In addition to its environmental benefits, this new technology will allow the City to continue using all of its existing equipment. It will also provide the City with an opportunity to reduce its cleaning costs and eliminate the need to purchase, transport, warehouse, distribute, store and restock inventory of multiple cleaning chemicals. A smaller version is available for consumer use as well.

South Thompson River now open The previous restriction for boat traffic on the South Thompson River between the Red Bridge and the confluence of the North Thompson River has now been lifted. RCMP officers patrolling the South Thompson River Wednesday noted that the water level under the CN Train trestle at Riverside Park had receded sufficiently for typical river watercraft to safely pass under the span. The operators of high riding water craft or those with elevated towing towers, antenna or other vertically extended equipment are warned to proceed with extreme cautioned when navigating through this area. Rainfall is predicted in the upcoming days throughout the Shuswap drainage basin. This may result in decreased clearances on the South Thompson River below the CN trestle at Riverside park.

Living Wage Index released for 2012 The Changing the Face of Poverty committee has released the 2012 Kamloops Living Wage Index calculation of $17.95 an hour. The Living Wage Index is calculated as the hourly rate at which a household can meet its basic needs, once government transfers have been added to the family’s income (such as the Universal Child Care Benefit) and deductions have been subtracted (such as income taxes and Employment Insurance premiums). It acts as a measure of the cost of living in Kamloops, and follows the meth-

odology developed by the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives, First Call BC and the Social Planning Council of Greater Victoria. Numerous other municipalities have completed similar Living Wage calculations including Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria and Williams Lake. See the attached the calculation, a 2012 update and methodology overview for Kamloops and an overview of the Living Wage from the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives.

Great grazing event!

On August 7, everyone gets to enjoy the very best of seasonal local food. Chefs from Kamloops to Salmon Arm are gathering at Thistle Farm in Westsyde to show off the very best of local produce in an event called “Farm2Chefs. Guests will nibble and sip their way around this gorgeous organic farm, exploring the work of local farmers, chefs, brewers and vintners. Deiter Dudy of Thistle Farm is the host for this event. “I love working with chefs – they are so passionate about great food,” he enthuses. “We’re very pleased to be able to have everyone explore the farm and all the great dishes the chefs are making.” Farm2Chefs is a “grazing” event, where everyone wanders around the farm, sampling small dishes prepared by 19 different local restaurants and finding exciting new pairings for that food with local wines, beers and mead (honey wine). All participants use local and seasonal ingredients, and food is served on natural or edible dishes, so waste is reduced while flavours are enhanced Tickets for the event are available at the Kamloops Farmers Market every Saturday – just look for the Chefs Collaborative booth. They are also available by calling Ed Walker at 250-320 6974, or at www.tscfc.org.

Global community supports local woman’s healing journey Janet Whitehead is a local potter, grandmother and owner of Musings and Mud Life Coaching Studio, who has touched many lives with a sprinkle of magic. For six years, Janet has hosted creativity workshops to help one change his life for the better. Through clay play, spilling paint, asking questions and being silly, much needed answers have been found for locals and others world wide. Several months ago, Janet was faced unexpected detour in her adventurous life, when she was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer. This one night event on September 1 from 6:30 to 9:30 PM is intended to be a fun time for the whole family. Enjoy the unique space of The Art We Are, drink, eat delicious and healthy food, and check out the incredible listed auction items. As Kamloops artists are gra-

ciously donating brilliant artworks, handmade earrings, concert tickets, gift certificates for Reiki healing and household construction, other artists whom Janet has reached through her business are mailing incredible pieces every day. From New Brunswick to the Grand Bahamas, the warmth of this global community is shining through to lift up this amazing woman. It is only fitting, as she has lifted up so many of us through her coaching and friendship. Janet was acknowledged at the Mayors Gala for the Arts in January 2012 and received

recognition of artistic and cultural achievements and contributions to the arts and culture community in the category of artistic innovation. All of the proceeds from this event will go to Janet’s health care and living costs. Please bring a few friends and come celebrate an excellent cause. As Liz Connors, from Burbank CA, said, “Here is to a woman who’s musical voice sings directly to the soul, awakening the creative force within; to the teacher with boundless compassion who can gently lead past the scariest of blocks. Here’s to Janet!”

A frequently asked question posed to Shirley, the owner of the newest day spa on the North Shore is “Why did you name it the Rowan Tree?” The answer is twofold and makes sense when you hear her philosophy and vision. “The Rowan Tree survives where other trees cannot in the Highlands of Scotland, the country I was born in,” explains Shirley Dalgety. “and I liked the analogy when connecting it to building a business in an unpredictable economy. The second reason is in many folklore traditions the Rowan is purported to be magic. The Irish believed it was from this sturdy tree that women were created and the Druids used the branches in ceremonies that celebrated and honoured the goddess. I’d like to believe that that is what this spa is all about; give everyone a chance to celebrate their inner Goddess.” It was with this in mind that Shirley formulated what she wanted the spa to represent to Kamloops; Friendly staff in a relaxed unhurried atmosphere, top quality product lines applied and used by highly skilled technicians and a clean comfortable environment for both workers

Top 10 office rules for hardworkers

1. Most important – Don’t let your boss see this by mistake! 2. Build vocabulary. Read up on some computer magazines and pick out all the jargon and new products. Use the phrases freely when in conversation with bosses. Remember, they don’t have to understand what you say, but you sure sound impressive. 3. Stacking strategy. It is not enough to pile lots of documents on the table. Put lots of books on the floor, etc. (thick computer manuals are the best). 4. Creative sighing for effect. Sigh loudly when there are many people around, giving the impression that you are under extreme pressure. 5. Leave the office late. Always leave the office late, especially when the boss is still around. You could read magazines and storybooks that you always wanted to read. Make sure you walk past the boss’ room on your way out. Send important e-mails at unearthly hours (i.e. 9:35pm, 7:05am, etc.) and during public holidays. 6. Look impatient and annoyed. According to George Costanza,

one should also always try to look impatient and annoyed to give off the impression that you’re always busy. 7. Voice mail - Never answer your phone if you have voice mail. People don’t call you just because they want to give you something for nothing - they call because they want YOU to do work for THEM. That’s no way to live. Screen all your calls through voice mail. If somebody leaves a message for you and it sounds like impending work, respond during lunch hour when you know they’re not there - it looks like you’re hardworking and conscientious even though you’re being a devious weasel. 8. Messy desk - only top management can get away with a clean desk. For the rest of us, it looks like we’re not working hard enough. Build huge piles of documents around your workspace. To the observer, last year’s work looks the same as today’s work; it’s volume that counts. Pile them high and wide. If you know somebody is coming to your cubicle, bury the document you’ll need halfway down in an existing stack and rum-

mage for it when he/she arrives. 9. Use computers to look busy. Any time you use a computer, it looks like “work” to the casual observer. You can send and receive personal e-mail, chat and have a blast without doing anything remotely related to work. These aren’t exactly the societal benefits that the proponents of the computer revolution would like to talk about, but they’re not bad either. When you get caught by your boss - and you will get caught - your best defense is to claim you’re teaching yourself to use new software, thus saving valuable training dollars. 10. Never walk without a document -- People with documents look like hardworking employees headed to important meetings. People with nothing in their hands look like they’re headed for the cafeteria. People with a newspaper in their hand look like they’re headed for the toilet. Above all, make sure you carry loads of stuff home with you at night, thus generating the false impression that you work longer hours than you really do.

OFFICE PRANK

There’s never a dull moment in the office. Don’t be surprised if you turn up after you’ve been on vacation to find your entire cubicle ‘redecorated’.”

On vacation

Wash your hands

Bob says to Lester, “You know, I reckon I’m about ready for a vacation, only this year I’m gonna do it a little different. The last few years, I took your advice as to where to go. Then last year, you told me to go to the Bahamas, I went to the Bahamas, and Marie got pregnant again.” Lester says, “So what you gonna do different this year?” Bob says, “This year, I’m takin’ Marie with me…”

A lawyer, an economist, and a teacher were going to the bathroom. The lawyer gets done, washes his hands, and then proceeds to use almost the entire roll of paper towels to dry his hands. He says “I was taught to be thorough.” The economist gets done, washes his hands, but uses only one paper towel. He says “I was taught to be environmentally friendly.” The teacher gets done and leaves without washing his hands. He says “I was taught not to pee on my hands.”

Your Horoscope LEO (July 23-Aug 22)  You can make reasonable bids on real estate or large items for your home. Plan a trip to the country or take a drive to the beach. Trips will be exciting. You may be tired of working for someone else. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 23)  Children will keep you busy. Social gatherings will be conducive to meeting new potential mates. You will meet a person who may turn out to be more than just a friend. Try to join groups of interest such as ballroom dance classes or perhaps an internet organization. LIBRA (Sept 24-Oct 23)  You may have the energy to clear up that mound of paperwork. You need to challenge yourself. Consider selling your homemade crafts. You can persuade the toughest opponents to think your way. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22)  You will be appreciated for the competence you exhibit and for taking on responsibilities. You may have been trying to do too much, leaving yourself exhausted and open to colds and infections. Go out with friends and avoid the situation on the home front. You can solidify your relationship if you plan a special evening with your mate. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21)  Abstain from involvement with married individuals. A passionate party for two might be just the remedy. Your boss won’t be thrilled if you leave things unfinished. Use your energy wisely. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20)  Your changing philosophies may lead you into new circles and open doors that will give you a unique outlook on life. Remain calm and you’ll shine. Passion should be your goal. You will benefit through hidden assets and property investments. You must be sure not to be frivolous, because as the saying goes, easy come, easy go. AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19)  Help elders in your family. An older member of your family may have left you with a pressing situation. Don’t consume more than necessary. Be sure to think twice before you say something that might hurt your partner’s feelings. PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20)  Opportunities for love will develop while traveling or attending religious functions. Take a look at courses offered at a local institute. Before you proceed be sure to talk your plans over with those they will affect. A lack of support and negativity have been the main problems. ARIES (Mar 21-April 20)  Be careful not to overextend yourself or you will lose in the long run. Opportunities to get together with people in powerful positions could help you get ahead. Your partner may be reluctant to tell you how they feel. Put your efforts into job advancement. TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21)  First find out if they’re married. Knowledge can be acquired if you listen. Keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself; don’t get dragged into an unsavory debate. Don’t use the interstate as a racetrack. GEMINI (May 22-June 21)  Helping children may be rewarding and challenging. You can make excellent investments if you are in the right place at the right time. Travel will initiate new friendships or love connections. Go out with friends or family. CANCER (June 22-July 22)  You can make amends by taking them somewhere special. You will have a tendency to put on pounds. Your personal life will be disrupted if you have been too busy with business. You may be offered opportunities that will result in a higher earning potential. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Michael Thiessen.
