With a settlement that started with a shipwreck by Portuguese sailors in 1543 and Bermuda’s use throughout history as a base for both privateers and the military, the island boasts a lively past. Bermuda is comprised of seven main marine limestone islands and more than 150 islets and rocks, a formation that lends itself to curious geographic features. The island’s culture is a mash-up of British class and Caribbean spice, resulting in a diversity that’s given rise to notable

creatives and alluring works of art. Bermuda is undeniably unique, and there are many ways to experience each thread that makes up the fabric of the island. WILD WONDERS

The Crystal Caves of Bermuda

The beauty of Mother Nature is on display almost everywhere you look in Bermuda, but the island’s Crystal Caves up the ante with a heavy dose of wonderment. The slow drip of erosion has carefully carved away the marine limestone that forms Bermuda, resulting in gleaming stalactites and stalagmites that inspire a sense of reverence for the natural world. The cave — at 1,640 feet long and 203 feet deep — is partially submerged, as about 66 feet of the cave’s depth is below sea level. Azure pools of water add allure to this incredible representation of natural artistry. Getting to the cave requires descending 88 steps, so be ready for a little exercise as you explore this otherworldly site.

Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ)

Come face-to-face with wildlife from around Bermuda — and from across the globe — all under one roof at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. At the walk-through Islands of Australasia exhibit, you’ll see tree kangaroos, parma wallabies, and eclectus parrots; the tropical walkway at the Islands of the Caribbean exhibit will guide you through a flight cage that the scarlet ibis, Brazilian agouti, and golden lion tamarin monkeys call home. Don’t miss the Galapagos exhibit, where you and your little ones can take a photo with a giant Galapagos tortoise. Flamingos, whose pink plumage is evocative of Bermuda’s blushing sands, are another popular site at BAMZ.

Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI)

Explore the seas that surround Bermuda at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute just outside the City of Hamilton. You and the whole family can explore the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle at the popular Unlock the Secrets exhibit. Learn how the islands that make up Bermuda were formed, and marvel at John R.H. “Jack” Lightbourn’s impressive shell collection, featuring more than 1,200 specimens. A visit to BUEI is as informative as it is engaging.

TIME TRAVELLING

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse

Bermuda’s storied history offers several take-me-back-in-time experiences for modern-day visitors, and Gibbs Hill

Lighthouse is one such beacon of the past with an incredible view to boot. Constructed in 1846 and standing 117 feet tall, it’s the oldest cast-iron lighthouse in the world and one of only two still in existence. Climb the lighthouse’s 185step spiral staircase and not only will you be getting your steps in, but you’ll also be rewarded at the top with panoramic views of the South Shore beaches, Little Sound, the City of Hamilton, and Royal Naval Dockyard in the west. At just $2.50 per person, the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is absolutely worth a visit.

Town of St. George

On Bermuda’s East End, the island’s one-time capital is today noted as the oldest continuously inhabited British town in the New World. The Town of

St. George, first settled in 1612, has earned the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to it being “an outstanding example of a continuously occupied, fortified, colonial town dating from the early 17th century. A stroll through the well-preserved town’s quaint streets is a must-do for anyone who’s curious about the Bermuda of yesteryear. Don’t miss the Tucker House Museum, an elegant 1750s colonial Bermudian abode complete with antique furniture and an archaeological exhibit.

Fort St. Catherine

The best example of the “fortified” portion of UNESCO’s Town of St. George description can be found at Fort St. Catherine, an impressive stone

fortress with a well-preserved interior. This imposing structure is nestled on the northeastern tip of St. George’s and offers pretty beach views along with comprehensive exhibits and artefacts that provide a glimpse into life in the 17th century, when the fort was first constructed, along with towers, tunnels, ramparts, huge cannons, and even a drawbridge. Visitors can easily spend an hour or more here as they explore the period weapons, crown jewel replicas, and models of the fort’s evolution throughout the centuries.

St. Peter’s Church

As you amble along through St. George’s picturesque avenues, be sure to dedicate some time to St. Peter’s church, where history and stunning architecture go hand in hand. The oldest Protestant church in continuous use in the New World, this once-wooden church was rebuilt several times since its 1612 establishment, eventually in stone, and is known for being the birthplace of Christian worship in Bermuda. St. Peter’s is open to visitors Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a $2-per-person donation, and visitors are also welcome to attend the church’s worship services as well.

Unfinished Church

As the name of this destination might suggest, this church was never completed; but its dramatic weathered stone remains are captivating in their own right. Construction on this Gothic-style church began in 1874 as an intended replacement for St. Peter’s church, which had been badly damaged in a hurricane. Arguing amongst the parishioners and issues with funding stalled construction, and the last known work was completed in 1897, when the church’s roof was installed. Yet another hurricane came through in 1926, damaging much of the construction that had been done, though the haunting windowless Gothic arches remain.

Admiralty House Park

Beaches and caves and cliff jumping, oh my! Get your thrill on by leaping from the cliff of your choice into the crystal-blue sea below, then explore the caves and tunnels that once offered discreet passage to British Royal Navy admirals who resided at a grand home here. Admiralty House Park is a great place to sightsee if you’re looking to get away from the crowds and simply appreciate Bermuda’s raw, natural beauty.

Spittal Pond

The Spittal Pond Nature Reserve is a veritable treasure trove of Bermuda wildlife. A bird-watcher’s paradise, the pond attracts up to 500 species, whose distinct songs and frenetic energy make for quite the show. Don’t miss the “checkerboard,” a wide swath of eroded marine limestone where a geological occurrence called tessellated pavement gives it a checkerboard appearance. There’s also a plaque commemorating the first known human visitors to Bermuda — a group of Portuguese sailors who shipwrecked here in 1543, one of whom scrawled the year and the initials “RP,” possibly for King Rex Portugaliae, into a rock.

Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve

Travelling with a group presents certain challenges, especially when each member has their own vacation goals. Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve offers a little something for everyone. Walking trails, including a boardwalk that passes by a restored pond and salt marsh area, allow active travellers to enjoy Bermuda’s natural beauty whilst getting their steps in. The Wildlife Observation Tower provides nature lovers with a vantage point from which to spot migratory birds or even whales if they’re lucky. And there are a handful of beautiful beaches in the area, including Clearwater

Beach and Turtle Bay, where beach lovers can get their fix with soft powdery sands and calm turquoise waters.

Blue Hole Park

Blue Hole Park is home to beguiling natural features created from Bermuda’s marine limestone. Caves, grottoes, and mangroves are framed by a lush forest, making for a serenely beautiful setting. At the blue hole for which the park is named, you can plunge into the deep blue from the cliffs above. The water is cool and crystal clear, and crowds at this site are often minimal. Come for a quick trip to check “cliff-jumping into a blue hole” off your bucket list or stay a while and enjoy the area trails and the 12-acre Tom Moore’s Jungle where the blue hole is located.

Bermuda has a rich and deep maritime history, which is unsurprising considering no matter where you are on the island, you ’re never too far from the sparkling azure abyss.

From the traditionally built Bermuda sloops running trade across the open ocean to navigating vessels around the treacherous reef line that surrounds the island, the ocean has played a significant role in helping the island to flourish despite its seeming remoteness in the middle of the Atlantic. Here and now, though, any vacation to the island needs to include some form of aquatic adventure; and no matter what your fancy — whether relaxing, taking in the immeasurable undersea wonders, or participating in high-octane thrills — there is something for everyone on, near, or under the water.

ABOVE THE BLUE

The island is a veritable playground for saltwater lovers, and one way you can get out on the ocean is with the aid of an experienced captain on any variety of vessel. With seafaring in their blood, there is no shortage of knowledgeable mariners to show off the island’s coastal delights. Maybe under sail on a 65-foot catamaran with a glass of champagne in hand is your pleasure of choice. If you’re more inclined to spend time in the water, charters can be organised with a variety of water toys such as kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear. Or, if you’d prefer to see the wonders down yonder without getting wet, a trip aboard a glass-bottom boat might be more your pace.

With Bermuda’s temperate climate, there are year-round ocean-going offerings that will certainly delight just as much as a mid-summer’s sunny day. In March and April, humpback whales pass through the Sargasso Sea as they migrate north. During their passage, they often spend time playing along Bermuda’s south shore — oftentimes less than a mile offshore — so it is well worth a trip out to catch an aweinspiring glimpse of them. On a smaller scaler and a little closer to shore, though no less mesmerising, the sight of glow worms, which can be spotted dancing just under the surface of the water a couple of days after the full moon, can add a little sparkle to an evening cruise.

Bermuda’s waters are also teeming with marine life and game fish from wahoo to amberjack and tuna (both blackfin and yellowfin and, if you’re lucky, a rare giant bluefin) to blue and white marlin. Fishing charters are available year-round for half-day, three-quarter-day, or full-day trips; and no matter what your experience level, you’ll have no trouble getting hooked up with the wealth of knowledge from Bermuda’s fishing captains.

Those wishing to explore Bermuda’s bays and beaches on their own can head out in a rented boat, and most watersport outlets have a variety of vessels, whether you’re heading out with a larger gathering on a 23-foot pontoonstyle boat or you’re looking to dip in and out of some of Bermuda’s hidden coves and beaches on a 13- to 16-foot Boston Whaler.

ADRENALINE RUSH

For those who prefer to get their blood pumping, take a ride on the wild side on a banana boat adventure or zip around on a Jet Ski tour. Visitors can also use Bermuda’s prevailing winds to their advantage and speed along on adrenaline-fueled board sports,

including wind foiling and windsurfing. You can also take a spin high above the Great Sound on a parasail, where you’ll catch panoramic views of the island and spy reefs, pink beaches, forts, and the colourful buildings that make the island of Bermuda so unique. Or maybe you want to take part in one of Bermudians’ favourite pastimes: cliff jumping.

To kick it up a notch and get a little more physical whilst enjoying the water, there’s no better way to explore the

harbours, coves, and inlets than by kayak or paddleboard. Kayaks with glass bottoms can also be rented to really get a glimpse of the undersea life.

THE WONDERS OF THE DEEP

If you prefer to get up close and personal with the underwater environment that surrounds the island, whether snorkelling or with a certified PADI diver, you can explore from closer to shore or go a little deeper by heading out on a charter boat. Several beaches across the island provide concession stands where you can rent snorkels, and you won’t have to swim too far before you are surrounded by yellow and black–striped sergeant majors, multicoloured neon parrotfish, and angelfish; and, if you’re lucky, you



might even spy a sea turtle munching on seagrass or an octopus hiding out amongst the swaying purple sea fans. There are plenty of other wonders to delight in, including a profusion of vibrant corals. Take a tour out to one of Bermuda’s most epic coral reefs, North Rock, on the most northern edge of Bermuda’s reef platform 10 miles off the shoreline. There, you’ll get the chance to see some of the Bermuda water’s grander fish species and ancient undersea formations with the tops of the reef just a few feet below the water.

Outside of natural undersea wonders, Bermuda is considered the “wreck capital of the Atlantic,” laying claim to more than 300 shipwrecks that have succumbed to the island’s treacherous reefs that ring much of the island. There are about 40 of these iconic sunken ships, some dating back to the 1600s, that are worth exploring on a dive, including the Hermes, the Mary Celeste, the Cristóbal Colón, and the HMS Vixen

THE BERMUDA SAIL GRAND PRIX IS ONE OF THE EVENTS NOT TO BE MISSED.

AFTER SPECTACULARLY OPENING the third season of the international racing league SailGP, Bermuda will host one of the final events of season four as the championship nears its concluding stages in May 2024. One of the events of the year and not to be missed, the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix sees the island transformed into a giant event village for the week, with a host of corporate and public events and, of course, the most exciting racing on water in front of packed shorelines

on the weekend of May 4–5, 2024. Racing takes place in the turquoise waters of Bermuda’s Great Sound, and the event is presented in cooperation with the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA), an official host and partner.

Season four starts in June 2023 with the Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix at Chicago’s Navy Pier. Nine national teams representing Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland,

and the United States will battle in identical hydrofoiling F50 catamarans, capable of speeds of 100 km/h. Bermuda is just one stop on a worldwide tour that also visits destinations like Sydney, Saint-Tropez, San Francisco, and many more.

SailGP remains committed to offsetting its carbon footprint at each event as a climate-positive sports and entertainment competition. Bermuda has agreed to the league’s Climate Action Charter and is committed to local impact projects focusing on clean energy and ocean conservation. A portion of all tickets sold for this event will be donated directly to the U.N.’s renewable energy project.

Those really hoping to push their athleticism can take on the full challenge to participate in all three days of events.

Bermuda is also home to an active cycling and triathlon community and regularly hosts events, including the World Triathlon, featuring Bermuda’s own Dame Flora Duffy, who was named Female Triathlete of the Year in 2022 and currently holds the Olympic gold medal in the sport.

HIT THE TRAILS

For those who don’t need to compete, Bermuda’s terrain is perfect for hitting the pavement or trails, on foot or bike.

The Bermuda Railway Trail — what is now left after a short-lived railway that was built in 1931 as an alternative form of transportation when cars were banned from the island — has been repurposed as an outdoor path that snakes along the length of the island and features scenic routes, many off the main roads, through all nine parishes with extensive, unobstructed views of North Shore and the Great Sound.

If you’re looking to perfect your serve, Bermuda has several tennis courts, including the government-run W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium on the outskirts of the City of Hamilton. There are eight courts, including five hard courts, three clay courts, and one practice wall. Pickleball courts are available at several locations, including Pompano Beach Club, which recently converted three courts to pickleball and offers non-guest access for $25/hour.

Bermuda has a vibrant sporting community, with most weekends filled with regular football, rugby, and cricket games across the island. One of Bermuda’s cultural highlights is the annual Cup Match in mid-summer and celebrates emancipation on the island. The record-breaking athlete lands another title.

Continuing to make waves on the world stage, Bermuda’s Dame Flora Duffy recently achieved a feat no female triathlete has accomplished after landing her record-breaking fourth WTS World Triathlon title during a thrilling competition in Abu Dhabi in November 2022.

“You are without question the greatest female triathlete the world has ever seen, and you are an inspiration to us all here in Bermuda,” said Premier David Burt about the 35-year-old Duffy, who was born and raised in Bermuda. Duffy made the island proud when she landed Bermuda’s firstever gold Olympic medal during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo after winning the women’s triathlon.
