Get away from the bustle of the mainland on an island that has no roads, cars or bridges, thanks to local residents who signed a petition to stop commercial development back in the 1950s. There are many different options to reach the eight-mile island. One of the most popular options for day excursions is to take the Hemingway Water Shuttle, which leaves from Rose Marina on Marco Island and takes about 30 minutes. For those who want a more flexible schedule, renting a boat or a Jet Ski for the day is the best choice. Rentals can be found at most marinas in Naples and on Marco Island and cost around $300 per day plus the cost of fuel. Beach Vibes Here’s a guide to some of the best beaches in Naples — and the animals that relish a day at the beach.

From frolicking dolphins to double-breasted cormorants, all sorts of critters thrive along the sandy shores of Naples. Walk softly and carry a good camera, and you may just make a new friend — of the feather, fur or fin variety. Clam Pass Park: The 35-acre habitat for shorebirds and other creatures is just a boardwalk stroll or tram ride from Naples Grande Beach Resort. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park: Amenities are plentiful at this family favorite. So are eagles, ospreys and all sorts of shorebirds. Summer sea turtles nest along the shore, and stingrays like to bury their barbed tails in the sand at the edge of the water. Delnor-Wiggins also is a prime fishing spot. Barefoot Beach Preserve: Drive slowly and brake for gopher tortoises. The threatened reptiles like to hang out here, where they sometimes try to beat the heat by napping under parked cars. They’re called gophers, incidentally, because they dig burrows to protect themselves from the elements and voracious predators. In the summer months, loggerhead sea turtles lay eggs in the sand here. In winter, migratory osprey chicks hatch in nests atop poles. Bonita Beach Dog Park: Fido runs free along this shore at the edge of Lovers Key State Park just north of Naples. No leashes. No fences. No worries — for canines or their human pals. South Marco Beach: Dolphins often frolic right offshore. While you’re waiting for a photo op, you can engage in a spirited game of volleyball, zip around on a Jet Ski or touch the sky beneath a parasail. Tigertail Beach: Black skimmers, snowy plovers, roseate spoonbills and other shorebirds peck at snails and insects teeming in tidal pools across the lagoon. People are pleased by up-close encounters with winged beauties at the beach’s butterfly garden. Vanderbilt Beach: Here’s another great spot to sightsee dolphins from the sand. Check that off your list, and you’re ready to visit a trove of restaurants and boutiques just steps from the shore.

the mysteries of a sunken ship and hang out with titan turtles and colonies of multihued fish. Dive companies will set you up with transportation and gear: a wet suit, oxygen tank and fins. Many also offer classes, if you aren’t certified to dive. Snorkeling is easier than diving, and you don’t have to worry about certification. Just rent a snorkel mask and fins right on the beach and you’re good to go. You won’t be able to peruse the ins and outs of a shipwreck, but you’ll be surprised at how much you can see from the surface. A tour boat can take you out in the Gulf to spots well known by snorkeling aficionados, and several good snorkeling sites are accessible from the shore of a Naples beach. SOARING In Naples, watersports can take you to undreamed-of heights; and unlike unlucky Icarus, you won’t have to fashion your wings from feathers and wax. You can boot up on a water-propelled flyboard or strap on a jetpack. Parasailing is another way to get high, so to speak. How high can you fly tethered to a wind-catching chute? How about 500 feet? SLIPPING & SLIDING On a Naples vacation, kids just wanna have fun, too. They’ll find it at Sun-N-Fun Lagoon. Collier County’s waterpark boasts five exhilarating slides and rides, four swimming pools, and a 10-foot-wide meandering river made for leisurely tubing. Plentiful amenities include locker rooms with showers and snack stands and cafés.

At Collier-Seminole State Park you can use technology to help you learn about the past as you marvel at the beauty of the present. In the 19th century, Seminole Indians lived on this land. Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, as its name suggests, is a sanctuary for the elusive cats and their neighbors, including black bears and birds ranging from wood storks to brown-headed nuthatches. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center is perfect for learning how to appreciate and take care of the land around you. Visit its Dalton Discover Center and interact with a host of conservationrelated activities. Little ones will love the Little Explorer Play Zone, and the whole family will enjoy seeing the sights from aboard an electric boat. Another way to take in the beauty of Florida is at the Naples Botanical Garden. The 170-acre garden showcases plants from all over the world and offers walking trails as well as a butterfly garden, special programs for children and different weekly events.

If you are not done with your visit yet, or you are craving more wilderness, here are some more experiences and activities Naples has to offer. Dolphin encounters: Bring your binoculars to Naples Pier early in the morning or late at night, when dolphins are apt to be out and about. Or book a dolphin sightseeing cruise. Choose from different boat tours to get up close and personal with these flippered creatures. Manatee visits: Another large marine mammal you’ll want to meet is the manatee, or sea cow, that thrives in warm Atlantic and Gulf waters. Choose from a number of tours that help you spot them. Bird-watching: If our feathered friends are more to your liking, grab your camera and binoculars because you will definitely need them. Hundreds of bird

species have been identified in this part of Florida. Learn more about plovers, storks, cranes and eagles on a guided tour. Airboat rides: The best way to get around the wet and wild Everglades is to take a tour aboard one of the iconic Florida boats. You’ll spot birds of all sorts, as well as an alligator – or five. Kayak tours: If you’d rather paddle than skim across the sawgrass, a kayak is the boat for you. Numerous guided tours are offered in Naples that take you off the land and into the water. These are great for observing the beautiful mangroves and small islands. Seaplane adventures: Maybe you’d like to see it all in just a few hours. It can be a daunting task for a restaurant to turn a profit in its first year of operation. But Sails Restaurant isn’t your average restaurant. The Fifth Avenue eatery has garnered many accolades since it opened in Naples — just last year. We spoke to Executive Chef Jacob Jasinski, an award-winning cook and the culinary cornerstone of Sails. Here’s what he had to tell us. Where are you from? I grew up primarily in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. My grandparents were from Poland and came to this country after World War II. What inspired you to cook? Thanks to my grandparents, I grew up around a lot of traditional dishes. I also enjoyed cooking with my family. My father especially encouraged me to use different ingredients and try new things. Eventually, I began to enjoy traveling and seeing new things. These experiences also influenced the way I cook. What makes Sails Restaurant stand out from the crowd? We dazzle guests with our carefully arranged seafood displays, showcasing everything from North Atlantic oysters to Branzino (bass) from Greece. We always try to offer something special. What’s your favorite seafood dish on the menu? It really depends on the season. I like a lot of what’s available when the water gets colder because it affects the fish in terms of having a firmer flesh and sweeter note. I’m very fond of the complexity that brings to your palate. As far as our composed dishes, I’m very excited about our scallop dish. We pair North Atlantic scallops with truffle-scented dashi rice and finish the dish with citrus and truffle emulsion. What do you like to do in your off time? Aside from catching a Red Sox game whenever I can, I cherish the time I can spend with my family, hanging out and catching up with my boys. Also, I absolutely enjoy my wife’s cooking. She might not believe me, but her plates are better than mine. Can you share a memorable moment in your career? The biggest reward and achievement I find is when customers come up and say, “This is our new favorite restaurant.”

THIRD STREET SOUTH Dating from the mid-1990s, this is Naples’ oldest market and one of the area’s biggest. It’s on Saturdays year-round from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot for the Third Street South shopping district. Don’t miss: Try the popular mixed-berry scones at Tony’s Off Third just next door. They’re made from scratch with fresh berries. Wash them down with Black Tulip coffee, locally roasted organic beans from Bali, Ethiopia, Guatemala and beyond.

BONITA SPRINGS The farmers market here sets up on the west side of the Promenade Shopping Center’s parking lot and boasts a nice mix of vendors selling food and more. It’s on Saturdays from October through April, starting at 8 a.m. to noon. Don’t miss: Fresh heirloom tomatoes from Farmer Mike’s, a fourth-generation U-Pick family operation based in Bonita Springs, where it raises more than 100 different crops. Check out strawberries, squash, lettuce and herbs as well. One taste of the samples at Cherie's Sweet Treats stand, and you’re hooked. A Night at the Movies

From prehistoric sloths and fierce Calusa warriors to the state’s first golf resort and fat-tired swamp buggies, the Naples timeline meanders through millennia. Area museums sweep you into the past with exhibits that show how the southwest Florida city came to be; others explore art, nature and other facets of the Naples experience.

Native plants landscape the tree-shaded, five-acre park outside, where you will find a vintage swamp buggy and logging locomotive, Seminole chickee hut, re-created fort and early homes. Also near downtown, the Naples Depot Museum lives in the circa-1926 train station, where visitors such as Greta Garbo and Gary Cooper once arrived to vacation at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, Florida’s first golf resort. This fun-to-explore museum traces local history by dugout canoe, railroad, automobile, swamp buggy and airplane. Two authentic restored railroad cars outside are open to tour as well. Both the Collier Museum and Naples Depot Museum host changing art, history and natural history exhibits of local relevance; so check out their websites to see what is scheduled. Part of the same Collier Museums group, the Marco Island Historical Museum specializes in Calusa culture. In December 2018, it debuted an exciting, long-awaited Key Marco Artifacts exhibition, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution until April 2021. The exhibition includes the iconic Key Marco Cat wood carving and other important pieces that were unearthed by archaeologist Frank Hamilton Cushing during his landmark 1896 excavations on the island — acclaimed as one of the nation’s most remarkable native American digs. In North Naples, not far from Naples Grande Beach Resort, the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, known as C’MON, packages local history, nature and art in an interactive, family-friendly manner. The Naples Trolley is the centerpiece of the 30,000-square-foot hall inside the colorful ship-shaped building with its 12 galleries. A computerized graffiti wall, a touchable art exhibit and hands-on painting and drawing heighten kids’ interest in art. Nearby, plush animal toys fill the 350 branches of a gigantic, realistic banyan tree. Kids can step inside to experience a virtual pond and see fish flit away and water plants grow. For a sound historical overview, start with Collier Museum at Government Center, just east of downtown. A giant sloth skeleton greets you as you enter the museum’s indoor exhibits. Realistic vignettes portray prehistoric, pioneer and other eras peopled by Seminole Indians, cattlemen, plume hunters, rum smugglers, loggers, pineapple farmers, Florida “Crackers” and other colorful characters.

With its many cultural offerings, the NaplesBonita Springs area shines on the silver screen.

With two international film festivals, a year-round indie film series, and two luxury cinemas, Naples and its neighbors boast big-screen entertainment options. Celebrating its 10th anniversary last year, the Naples International Film Festival (NIFF) ended with a blockbuster closing night that starred the dynamic comedic duo of Steve Martin and Martin Short. The 2019 event promises another four days in October filled with a gala opening, indie films and closing-night fanfare. Naples—Artis hosts the opening and closing affairs, while the elegant Silverspot Cinema airs three days of new-release American and foreign films. Watch in comfortable soft-leather chairs, relax with a drink from the extensive bar and enjoy full-menu dining. The city’s benchmark entertainment venue, Naples—Artis also sprinkles its muscle-bound calendar of concerts, Broadway shows, comedy and dance with stimulating lectures on cinema topics like Films of James Cagney. Other offerings include its Art in Film series, live orchestrated film events and Reel Stories: From Page to Screen. In nearby Bonita Springs, the Center for the Arts is making its mark on the area’s marquee. In 2015 the center expanded its visual arts campus to a second location and opened the Center for Performing Arts Moe Auditorium & Film Center. It was then able to grow its fledgling film series to a weekly Mondaynight schedule year-round, covering genres from classic to contemporary. Informed discussions follow airings. In 2016 the center hosted its first Bonita Springs International Film Festival (BIFF) in its new state-of-the-art film center. This year the four-day festival in February featured more than 70 films ranging from kids’ shorts and narrative films to animated flicks and documentaries in a daily mix of styles. Workshops, filmmaker Q&As and a gala opening round out the annual festival calendar. Silverspot Cinema, part of the Mercato entertainment district in North Naples, opened in 2009 as the region’s first deluxe dine-in theater. Throughout the year, it shows mainstream films along with high-brow fare, such as offerings from The Metropolitan Opera, and seasonal specials that could include anything from retro slasher flicks for Halloween to The King and I. Naples’ second luxury theater opened in 2014, just across the highway. Paragon Pavilion amenities include electric reclining leather chairs, ample leg room, reserved seating online, state-of-the-art projection, and beer, wine and pizza you can enjoy in the theater. Its 10 screens show mostly first-run, hit movies but also airs anime and old-school films. From all aspects, Naples has showcased film arts and taken cinema to a higher level, mixing media and engaging senses in fresh ways that cross boundaries. It’s the reel deal, just the way Naples rolls it.

Meet Christine Lyons Living in Naples inspires this talented artist to express herself. By Jonathan Monje

Bright colors, warm details and positive energy. That’s what you’ll find in the paintings of local artist Christine Lyons. Like many of her Naples colleagues, Lyons draws inspiration from her lush southwest Florida surroundings, bountiful marine life and the city’s cosmopolitan charm. Here the coastal contemporary artist discusses her work and the inspiration behind it.

What drew you to Naples? My husband and I moved here from Jacksonville about six years ago with our two kids. Naples offers a relaxed, familyoriented environment — and we love the beach! There is also a rich art community here. I was a part of the Naples Art District for about two years. Artists come together and work with each other on different events around town. There are plenty of art shows in the area, and it really brings the community together.

How did you get into painting? I have a degree in interior design and have always leaned into the creative spectrum. I started painting when my son was born. Eventually I got confident enough to enter an art show, and I got some great feedback. The shows in which people gravitated towards my work inspired me to try different mediums, techniques and expressions. It’s gratifying to see your work changing someone’s perspective or giving someone the same feelings you had while painting the piece. Can you describe your artistic process? I started with a brush but made my way to using the pallet knife. It gives me so much more expression to use in creating a pop of color. I always loved thick textures, and as I’ve continued painting, I’ve noticed the need for more shapes, lines, dimensions and touch of details. I never have to sit and think hard about what to put on a blank canvas. It’s what I feel in that moment, the colors I want to see, the energy I want to express. It’s a very free form. Favorite local spots? Our favorite restaurant to visit with the kids is Tacos and Tequila. We also love going to beaches such as Clam Pass Park near Naples Grande. We love taking out our paddle boards, and in these beautiful waters you can see the stingrays and all the ocean life. Interesting facts about yourself? I love tennis and yoga, and I’m also a huge reptile lover. Specifically, snakes. We’ve also owned turtles and several lizards. Our turtles were getting too big at one point, so we gave them to the Nature Center at the conservancy in Naples. They take in animals for rehab and also provide a haven for them. We go back and visit from time to time. What’s ahead for you? I see myself gravitating more towards private shows. I just did a private show over the summer in Washington, D.C., and it was my best show yet. I have some shows on the calendar in Denver, Houston and Wilmington, N.C. The private shows are more personal, and you have the ability to discuss your art with people and show how your personality reflects in your work. I’ve also transitioned into using more art resin work. I’ve started making necklaces, which involves making tiny paintings and putting them onto pendants and throwing resin into the process. I see myself evolving more into objects. I want to utilize mediums people can wear or even decorate their homes with, which brings me back to interior design — my major in college.

Naples Players, the city’s oldest community theater troupe, celebrated its 65th season in 2018.

One exhibit teaches about seasons in other parts of the country: Kids rake leaves and crawl into a chilly igloo. Different areas engage tots ages 3 and younger, the age 8-to-14 set and teens. In Backyardville, water play, a hedge maze, a rolling hill and a chalkboard wall keep kids engaged outdoors.

Also appealing to kids as well as adults, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s Nature Center comprises a multifaceted indoor and outdoor complex. In fall 2019, culture seekers look forward to the reopening of The Baker Museum, which closed in September 2017 due to hurricane damage. On the campus of Artis— Naples, The Baker polishes the area’s world-class reputation for fine art. It will reopen with a new façade, entryway and expanded gallery, event and educational spaces. The expansive collection includes the museum’s entrance gates, crafted by metal artist Albert Paley, plus stunning chandeliers and a Persian ceiling created by acclaimed glass artist Dale Chihuly. Rotating exhibits from the museum’s collection include modern American masters from 1900 to 1955 and two monumental sculptures by Louise Nevelson. Special exhibits run throughout the season and ensure a new experience with each visit.
