THE ART OF HOSTING

In the whirlwind of our time-crunched lives where speed dictates our daily routine, we operate in grab and go mode, with a paraphernalia of disposables filling our bins.

Holidays give us the gifts of time, space, and social connections. A perfect opportunity to engage in leisurely pursuits, outdoor adventures, sporting activities, or simply having down time to relax. Bringing families and friends together over home cooked meals to mark a special achievement or cultural and religious event, gives me the opportunity to curate special settings to make for memorable occasions. Here I lay out formal dining ware from my family heirloom sets — bone chinaware, crystal stemware, silverware, and

starched linen napkins. In my youth these would have been called ‘polaroid moments’, that today are known as ‘instagrammable moments’. Old world charm never fails to elevate memorable experiences, no matter how fast our world is spinning around us with the latest innovations.

I invite you to close your eyes, take a pause, then inhale deeply as you enter a slower pace of life in the Caribbean, reflecting on and cherishing the important things in your life that bring you joy. This is your time to shine.

With best wishes from the PARADIS team.

PEOPLE THE FINDS MUST HAVES THE FASHIONABLE

JACOB DE CORDOVA And The City Of Waco, Texas—175 Years of Caribbean Heritage.

March 2024 marked the 175th anniversary of Waco, Texas. Established in 1849 by Jamaican-born Jacob de Cordova, a founding member of the oldest newspaper in the Caribbean, The Gleaner, published in Jamaica and is the largest English language newspaper in the Caribbean. The name Waco is a tribute to the indigenous people and tribe that had previously settled in that area of Texas. De Cordova envisioned a natural beauty, and a strategic location, combined with the fea-

tures of a community with diverse cultural backgrounds — a city where all is welcomed.

Unknown to many, Jacob de Cordova’s memory recently resurfaced as part of Waco’s Hispanic heritage celebrations. The painting shown here was recently displayed at a 2018 Hispanic heritage art show, and Jacob de Cordova’s great, great, great grandson Vann de Cordova spoke at the event.

Jacob Raphael de Cordova was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, 6 June 1808. He was raised in

England by an aunt. Jacob received an incredible education in Europe and was proficient in five languages: English, French, Spanish, German, and Hebrew which came in handy when recruiting and dealing with settlers from around the globe. Jacob de Cordova originally proposed naming the city Lamartine. However, surveyor George Erath, who laid out the first blocks for the new city in 1849, convinced De Cordova to honour the indigenous people of the area by calling it Waco. Jacob de Cordova was not only instrumental in the founding of Waco, but he would soon be the largest landholder in the fledgling state of Texas. In his life he explored more territory than famous voyager Cabeza de Vaca and brought more settlers to Texas than Stephen F. Austin.

After becoming a naturalised citizen of the Republic of Texas, de Cordova moved from the small, town of Galveston to Houston, where he expanded greatly in business, found new ways to serve his community, and was instrumental in the founding of the Houston Chamber of Commerce. In 1844 he became an alderman and was elected a State representative to the State of Texas Legislature in 1848. / P

Jewellery Exquisitely crafted using ethically sourced materials, Tabayer fine jewellery is rooted in notions of protection and empowerment, set in pure and elemental, contemporary designs.

Tabayer’s debut collection, Oera, amalgamated the many rich influences in Nigora’s life.

Nigora’s vision has been influenced by American sculpture.

Founded in 2021 by Nigora Tokhtabayeva, the brand is inspired by the power and symbolism of jewellery. Reflective of its founder, Tabayer nods to the multifaceted woman: an independent, feminine, and empowered individual who embodies a unique balance of vulnerability and strength. This special duality is echoed in Tabayer’s modern, minimalist designs.

Long fascinated by the beauty of jewellery as a protective amulet, Tabayer’s first collection, Oera, took its cue from Inanna’s Knot, an ancient Mesopotamian symbol of fertility and protection. Recalling a braided bundle of weeds, the knot is reinterpreted through the lens of modernist sculpture, and features a tactile, sensually rounded form that gradually acquires a knife-edge point, culminating in asymmetric ends.

The key piece of Oera Edition 04 is the statement necklace – a meticulously crafted choker. It’s a statement piece, fine art jewellery that is also very minimal.

Building on family heirlooms

Nigora’s love of jewellery began as a child growing up in Uzbekistan, where amulets and close-knit family traditions were very much part of her upbringing. A passion and sentiment for jewellery transcends generations of women in Nigora’s family. A pair of ruby earrings, for example, is an important heirloom infused with meaning and protection. Now worn by her daughter, the earrings once belonged to her ancestor and has been passed down and worn by each generation of women in Nigora’s family.

Based in Miami, Nigora’s vision has been influenced by American sculpture. The interplay of mass and void in Alexander Archipenko’s work informs her designs, as does the tubular minimalism found in Isamu Noguchi’s urban pieces at Miami’s Bayfront Park. She also cites female sculptors like Barbara Hepworth and Eve Hesse as inspirations. Tabayer’s debut collection, Oera, amalgamated the many rich influences in Nigora’s

life: modernist sculpture and volume, the notion of a universal talisman, and a unique balance between the abstract and figurative, vulnerability and strength, masculinity and femininity.

Tabayer’s commitment

At the core of the Tabayer ethos is a deep commitment to protecting the Earth. Their jewellery is handcrafted in artisanal, family-owned workshops that are all members of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). All Tabayer pieces are made exclusively from Fairmined gold and set with ethically sourced diamonds, compliant with the Kimberley Process.

Fairmined is an assurance label initiative by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM). Founded in 2004, ARM aims to transform artisanal

and small-scale mining into a socially and environmentally responsible activity, which improves the quality of life of artisanal miners and their environments. To ensure full traceability in line with the Fairmined standard, every stage of Tabayer’s supply chain from the mine to the business is audited. The mines undergo an annual, independent third-party audit, while refiners, manufacturers, and casters are audited every one to two years. The Fairmined gold standard offers a traceable chain of custody from our gold supplier through to our business.

The suppliers and their trusted network of partners are audited and certified by the RJC, who have internationally recognised Code of Practices. This covers responsible ethical, human rights, social and environmental standards for the gemstone and jewellery business.

Oera Edition 04

In its latest iteration, Oera Edition 04, signature Oera forms are reimagined in nuanced shades of primary colours of red, yellow, and blue. For the first time, Tabayer uses hardstones and semi-precious gemstones—blue chalcedony, red jasper, carnelian, and yellow agate, inaugurating its journey into new materials, finding new forms of expression and representation of the traditional amulet.

collection aesthetically, but they also add a spiritual layer, enriching the emotional and symbolic significance of the pieces. Edition 04 reflects both the elegance of modern design and the deeper, meaningful connection that these stones bring to the wearer.

The key piece of Oera Edition 04 is the statement necklace. The choker is crafted meticulously from 18k Fairmined gold, embellished with sapphire and diamond pavé, and red jasper, forming an arch that elegantly caresses the neck.

The design was driven by a desire to expand and elevate the existing Oera collection through the use of colourful hard stones, including red carnelian, blue chalcedony, yellow, and green agate. These vibrant gemstones not only enhance the

The response to Oera Edition 04, particularly the Choker, has been overwhelmingly positive. The choker’s contemporary yet classic appeal has struck a chord across a broad demographic. It’s a statement piece, fine art jewellery that is also very minimal. In fact, at Couture 2024 this timeless piece received an award for the best colour gemstone category. The judges and industry leaders commended the technical precision involved in the crafting process.

“The Oera Edition 04 Choker is the standout piece of this collection.

It embodies our design ethos, emphasising sculptural and elemental forms through complex and technical craftsmanship. The red jasper stones are hand-carved to perfectly fit the necklace’s curvature, and each sapphire and diamond pavé is meticulously selected for its exquisite quality,” said Nigora.

What’s next

Tabayer continues to redefine the boundaries of fine jewellery, blending traditional techniques with innovative designs to create pieces that boldly reconceive the classical amulet in a modern light. This signature design language extends to the Oera bracelets, rings, and earrings in the coil version, while the cut-out version of earrings and rings introduces a new take on bold gender-fluid jewellery, perfect for stacking or worn on their own. Meanwhile, the pendant, globe version, is a delicate reinterpretation of an everyday amulet. This new collection is set to launch next June at the Las Vegas Couture 2025 Show, marking a new direction for Tabayer. | P

Imagine cruising down the Danube River in a long boat starting in Hungary and visiting Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania.

That’s exactly what we did in early October. Miami was 11 hours 20 minutes behind us after taking business class on our first ever Turkish Air flight; excellent all the way to Istanbul. What a surprise!

We’d spent a delightful week there a decade ago. Now we found ourselves in a huge, ultra-modern airport which opened six years ago. Our two-hour layover to Budapest was almost too short.

The plan for the temple was laid in 1893, in a spot chosen for its significance to the life of Serbia’s first archbishop Rastko Nemanjić who gave up his crown as a teenager in favour of a life of simplicity and service. Today this is one of the chief landmarks of Belgrade.

PKalocsa, the capital of paprika, included a visit to baroque St. Joseph Church and then the rural Bakodpuszta Equestrian Centre ” “

The Viking representative whisked us and our luggage off to The Corintha Hotel, renowned as the model for the movie “The Grand Budapest Hotel”. That evening we met Anna Görgey who had been our

private guide when we’d spent a week in Budapest 12 years earlier and was such a delight that we’d emailed ahead inviting her to dine with us at Caviar & Bull, a fine restaurant off the hotel lobby. Her father had been a Minister of Culture and though now passed on, she presented us with two of his books, a novel The Hunting Rug and the other The Night of the Execution by Gábor Görgey, the first especially moving.

We were worried about the recent terrible weather but fortunately the Parliament building was lit up for the first time since the floods when we had a tour of Budapest the next night. Then on 2 October I went to the splendid Baroque Gödöllö Royal Palace where the Austrian Empress and Hungarian Queen Elizabeth “Sisi” spent much of her time to get away from her mother-in-law, the Habsburg Empress Maria-Theresa, Franz Josef’s mother. Sisi even learned Hungarian and had Hungarian ladies-in-waiting, so the Hungarians adore her.

erhaps you know all this history? I certainly didn’t know anything about Eastern Europe, that the Danube had been somewhat of a border between the Roman Empire, later the Habsburgs and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and that of the Ottoman Turkish and Byzantine Empires. So many wars. So many gruesome deaths. Fortunately, I encountered a most charming gentleman in the gift shop who said his mother had been the first Baha’i in all of Hungary and had written a book, Rebirth: The memoirs of Renée Szanto-Felbermann. When I explained that I knew the Baha’i faith because of their wonderful temple in Kampala, Uganda he kissed my hand and said I’d made his day.

Finally on board the Ullur, our Viking long ship which was named after the stepson of Thor (Ullur is the god of the hunt, known for his great skill as an archer and a wizard), we met another charming gentleman, this time a Croatian, Zeljko Bilanovic, the Food and Beverage Manager who was to make our eight days on board perfect. Along with the ebullient Philippine waiter Ranel “Ian” Casium we were treated royally.

Our visit on 3 October to Kalocsa, known as the paprika capital of the world, included a visit to baroque St. Joseph Church and then the rural Bakodpuszta Equestrian Centre where the sound of the Tarogalo Turkish

After deadly Storm Boris lashed Europe, on 1 October 2024 the Hungarian Parliament lit up for the first time since the floods. The Danube River peaked at a 10-year high in Budapest with water reaching the steps of Parliament.

Privileged to pass through the Iron Gates gorge in daylight and view the rippling striations across Belogradchik Rocks

inspired wind instrument provided a mournful background to teams of oxen and the feats of riders on horseback.

Church of the Raising of the Holy Cross the next day provided another baroque splendour in sharp contrast to the vast flat agricultural fields we passed in Croatia where canola, sunflowers, corn, wheat, and gourds provide the economic foundation of this European Union nation.

Serbia turned out to have the biggest surprises. I’m a huge Novak Djokovic fan and had expected to see pictures of him and souvenirs galore but not one. Our guide suggested that once Djokovic turned gluten free i.e. without wheat products, his face had disappeared from popular view. What I do know is that at 6th century Kalemegdan Park and Fortress in Belgrade I encountered our first “fortress dog”, an adorable, well-fed, friendly animal who happily posed with my travel-mates’ granddaughter, Martina. I was delighted to see

that unlike some countries where one finds starving stray dogs in the streets, in the Balkan states every place we went there were well-fed, friendly dogs and cats being cared for.

Church of St. Sava in Belgrade is truly astonishing, in some ways more impressive than Rome’s St. Peter’s Cathedral. St. Sava (AD 1175-1235), the patron saint and national hero of Serbian people, is considered the essence of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Since Serbia gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878 there has been a desire to honour St. Sava but with the world wars and then communism construction was delayed. Modelled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, when that was converted from a Christian

Cathedral to a Moslem Mosque in 2020, the construction of St. Sava was nearly completed and was recognised as one of the largest Christian churches in the world. Ten thousand people can stand within it as they pray. The Serbian Orthodox Church does not have seating, nor instruments, but rather chanting and singing as worshippers stand. Recognised for its Byzantine architecture with the world’s largest mosaic murals and décor, St. Sava was the highlight of the trip.

Back on board that night we were treated to the Talija Art Company folk dancers and musicians who took us on a journey through Serbia. Next day we stopped at Golubac Fortress, built at the point where the Danube is widest and then passes through the Carpathian mountain gorge called the Iron Gates. The 14th and 15th centuries saw the fortress become the focal point of fighting between Hungary, Ser-

bia and the Ottoman Empire for control of the Danube.

Usually travelling at night, then spending the day or days in each country, we were privileged to pass through the Iron Gates gorge in daylight and view the rippling striations across Belogradchik Rocks and the impressive carving of Decebalus (AD 87-106) the last King of Dacia who fought Roman emperors Domitian and Trajan to preserve the independence of his country, which is now Romania. Created between 1994 and 2004 the sculpture looms on the Romanian side of the border between Serbia and Romania.

But first we arrived in Bulgaria on the southwest of the Danube. As we disembarked from our vessel, there stood The Memorial of the Victims of Communism. A recent review in the New York Times Review of Books noted that between Hitler and Stalin 14 million people had been killed in Europe. I couldn’t help thinking that one of the biggest mistakes that the communists made was to insist that people had to renounce religion. Their intense devotion to Christianity, or in some cases Islam, is evident throughout the Balkan countries. Once again at the Baba

The Golubac Fortress was built at the entrance of the Iron Gate gorge, a place where the Danube’s widest stream flows into a pass of the Carpathian Mountains. Based on historical sources, Golubac Fortress was used in 1335 as a fortification housing Hungarian military garrison.

Vida Fortress in Vidin, Bulgaria our guide had brought food for the fortress cat and her kittens. By now between all the churches and fortresses we were happy to visit Dos Alamos winery to sample Bulgarian wine.

As if sensing our overload of complicated, unfamiliar history, the crew presented an evening of western entertainment with Mitko on piano and Programme Director David Morgan from East Kent providing an accomplished musical performance which had everyone up on their feet dancing. David had the best Elvis Presley vocal impression I’ve ever heard, and I saw the movie Love Me Tender when it first came out in the 50s!

Ruse/Rousse, established in 1st century by the Romans went on to become neo-baroque, neo-rococo, Empire, Renaissance and Succession centre of architecture where we visited their Museum of History with artefacts from Danube castles and evidence of Thracian history from the 5th century BC, on through the 1st Bulgarian Kingdom in the 9th-11th centuries. A city of many firsts, from being an Ottoman

administration centre to having the first telegraph and railroad lines from Varna to Ruse, in 1878 it was the largest liberated city in Bulgaria, years later becoming the largest Bulgarian port on the Danube and a national liberation centre against the communists.

In Bucharest, Romania we viewed dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s Palace of Parliament, the second largest administration building in the world which took him 13 years to construct. Then off to visit his private residence, now a museum following his execution with wife Elena in 1989 after 24 years in power. We visited a monastery on Stavropoleos Street, then ended our visit with lunch at Caru cu bere, an historic architec-

tural monument from 1879, now a restaurant with four female musicians serenading us. Stained glass windows appearing in the background, arched ceilings, and a spiral staircase completed the elegant atmosphere before spending our final Bucharest night at the JW Marriott Grand Hotel.

Taking Lufthansa via Frankfort to Miami from Bucharest’s airport was definitely an overcrowded, unpleasant experience with old men having to sit on stone staircases and I having to stand waiting an hour to board. The actual Eastern European cruise was excellent, a learning experience perfectly managed with informative local guides and Viking staff who felt like family. | P

celebration

at Villa Opulenta located in Casa de Campo

With a showcase of world class entertainment, Casa de Campo Resort and Villas in the Dominican Republic, kicked off celebrations with a bevy of celebrities and entertainers in fine style the last weekend of October 2024. Attended by villa owners, hotel guests, and specially invited members of the public, we were wined and dined in between world class musical performances by local and international artistes. My group of family and friends booked a villa for this visit, and on arrival at Casa de Campo headed to Villa Opulenta at Punta Aguila 22, a 10 bedroom estate residence located on a scenic bluff overlooking the endless blues of the Caribbean Sea.

My wellness journey was delivered by the caring hands of spa attendants ” “

This exceptional property features well appointed indoor and outdoor entertainment areas that includes an air conditioned sound proof discotech lounge fully equipped with sound system, strobe lighting, bar, and more. That evening after the resident chef and villa staff indulged us in a hearty Dominican meal of spicy stew made with a selection of meats, tubers, and legumes, we headed to the in-residence disco. With our own private gathering we celebrated the camaraderie we have nurtured amongst ourselves over the years travelling together as a family and extended friends, bringing in a local DJ to spin Dominican favourites — Meringue, Bachata, and “Dem Bow”. As the music genres pulsed to the flashing strobe lights, Dominican libations flowed with local Brugal Rums and raised our glasses in high spirited cheers to ring in the start of yet another memorable holiday in the making — straight up, over rocks, and with mixed cocktails.

The next day we enjoyed a leisurely in-villa breakfast of the Dominican staple — mangú tres golpes made up of hearty servings of mashed plantains, fried eggs, salami, and fried cheese topped with zesty pickled red onions. We then headed to the spa for a day for relaxation, rejuvenation, and pampering to prepare for the evening’s champagne-fuelled kick-off party.

My wellness journey was delivered by the caring hands of attendants using the latest technology and acclaimed skin care brands, incorporating ancient healing traditions that soothed my muscles while invigorating my senses, leaving my skin dewy and glowing.

Local designers for tonight’s 50th Anniversary party

Casa de Campo 7,000 acre resort has just about all the services and amenities visitors may need without ever leaving the property, that includes designer clothing brands shops in the Altos de Chavón and Marina areas. Local fashion house Jenny Polanco, with its avant garde designs in linens was a big hit for the ladies in our group, and the men went for the local Guayabera linen shirts. I chose a white linen long sleeve shirt from fashion house Hippolita sporting decorative angled pleats with buttons crafted from the nation’s indigenous brilliant sky blue Larimar stones, set in sterling silver bases, giving my Guayabera the ultimate “wow” look for a timeless and classic elegant appeal.

concert of Casa de Campo’s 50th anniversary. Arriving at the beach fronting Minitas Beach Club just before sunset, we were welcomed by a glowing amber sun dipping into the ocean, with lapping waves of the Caribbean Sea caressing the white sandy beach, and sun lovers soaking up the last of the sun rays.

Dinner that evening had a specially curated menu to kick off the evening’s celebrations. We enjoyed opening small plates of pork belly, and halibut ceviche, followed by an appetiser of marinated tuna salad topped with Sevruga Caviar. Our main meal featured Paella-styled rice with seafood, oven roasted salmon, and frenched rack of lamb. Finishing with desserts of pavlova, molten corn cake, and a selection of fruit sorbets.

As we closed off our meal with digestifs of Dominica’s national drink — the herb infused Mamajuana, we could see guests streaming into the adjoining infinity pool deck and heard the band on stage strumming up their first notes as they readied for live performances. Heading over

to the pool area we were welcomed with flutes of champagne, and had barely taken our seats when the band began to play the revellers’ rock star favourite songs, which had us on our feet dancing the night away under the starry sky. In between sets we were entertained with lively tributes, 3D lighted drone shows, and a halo of fireworks, announcing to the world Casa de Campo had officially started its golden jubilee season of celebrations!

Our days were filled with sporting pursuits, from golf to tennis, shooting to equestrian, kayaking to diving

Preparing for the weekend of live performances we spent the days with sporting pursuits, from golf to tennis, shooting to equestrian, kayaking to diving, followed by fine dining on delectable fare prepared by our in-villa chef, before heading out for evenings filled with good vibes, live music, and soulful dance.

Friday night’s lineup included Robin Wilson, Robin Zander, Pedro Capó, and Richard Marx, all delivering an unforgettable show. On Saturday, the closing night saw the performance of the Crashers band (which opened both Friday and Saturday), along with performances by Jon Secada, Taylor Dayne, John Elefante, and Llane of Piso 2.

The legendary Jon Secada, delivered a memorable performance with a mix of songs in both Spanish and English with his hits “Angel”, “I’m Free”, and “Just Another Day”, to our cheers and applause calling out for more.

Pop icon Taylor Dayne captivated us with a stunning shimmering outfit singing her hits “Every Beat of My Heart”, “Love Will Lead You Back”, and the unforgettable “Tell It to My

And Colombian artiste Llane (Juan David Castaño Montoya) closed out the final night’s show with a charismatic mix of reggaeton and Latin urban music that was a hit with the younger crowd, who were one their feet dancing to his songs “Cuenta Conmigo”, “Puntos Suspensivos”, and “Como Antes”, affirming his rising super star status.

As the curtains came down on the final show of this year-long kick off 50th anniversary weekend, we reflected on the range of sporting activities, dining, wellness offerings, and entertainment programming during our stay, and all gave two thumbs up to the tagline — Casa de Campo Resort and Villas in the beautiful Dominican Republic is indeed “The World’s Most Celebrated Resort”. | P

The first one suppresses bacteria and viruses in the atmospheric air entering indoors, while the second one automates the sanitation of every internal room of the vessel. This sophisticated airspace sanitation system was created thanks to the support of the Owner Project Engineer, Giuseppe Sole.

This superyacht also boasts a Green Certificate for its Hybrid Propulsion as well as for its obtained maximum reduction of emissions at sea.

DESIGN & RESIDENCES

Villa Papillon on the South West Coast of Antigua with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.

Ward & Co. team is currently working on a major project on the private Caribbean estate of Jumby Island

” “

When you enter a Ward & Co Interiors designed Caribbean residence, whether on Antigua or Nevis, the first thing you see – and are wowed by — are the stunning views.

The breathtakingly beautiful teal and soft blues of the sky and sea, the rich greens of the palms and grasses are, by design, impressively framed panoramas. Sarah Ward, CEO and joint Founder of Ward & Co with her daughter Rosie Ward, both approach the firm’s interior design projects with the attitude “it’s all about the views. In this heavenly setting that is the Caribbean, the interior design should direct one’s eye to the views. The interiors need not compete, but softly complement the setting.”

This woman-owned, London-based interior design firm has done projects throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, and the middle east over the years. About fifteen years ago, Ward and her family, on a holiday in Antigua, “walked up to Reeds Point on the southwestern coast of the island, saw the sea and beach views and fell in complete, total, awestruck love with the site,” Ward said. Thus cemented her love for the Caribbean.

Alfresco living in mind with the interiors reflecting modern Caribbean design….it’s all about the view — The freedom to wake up every morning to the peace and serenity of these islands.

Originally, she planned to build a holiday home for herself and her family, but it led to more. Now the company they built in London has an impressive client portfolio of interior design projects throughout the Caribbean. Their first project, Villa Papillon, set on the tip of Antigua, commands a privileged position and ever-changing views of the sea and the islands of Redonda, Montserrat, and even as far as St. Kitts and Nevis. www. hello@villapapillonantigua.com

The success of the overall design of the home and its interiors was so impressive that Ward & Co has been contracted to take on

and lounging areas, a screening/ cinema room, and a large infinity pool set on the most picturesque point of the property grounds. With Sarah and Rosie’s impressive and award-winning background in design combined with their unique contemporary eye, Villa Papillon interiors are an inspired combination of elegance and understatement. Warm, soft earthy tones of bone, taupe, grey, browns are the underlying base that give way to pops of gold, peach, white, and chartreuse greens. The liberal use of natural stones, tiles and wood accents are paired with island-rattan pieces. “We also understand the need to meet the challenges of living by the sea with our choices of seaside-reliable materials, best-in-class fabrics that will, for example, withstand fading in the sun.”

The design team of Ward & Co Interiors has, in their comparatively short time working in the Caribbean islands, nevertheless developed an exemplary portfolio of luxury home interiors. They have established themselves not only as creative, aware and inspired, the knowledge and on-site availability of the top talents in the firm give homeowners confidence the project is being carefully managed for maximum efficiency. Sarah and Rosie Ward lead the London team of ten experienced designers. One of the mother-daughter duo’s favourite words is ‘duality.’ They explain that the complementary precision and elegance of their many UK

New projects

In the first quarter of 2025 the firm completed interior architecture and installation of furnishings and soft goods for their newest project in Antigua, an impressive new 20,000 square foot lateral beachfront residence, a joint project with KSR Architects. Set on the southwest coast, every interior space offers views of the Caribbean Sea. “We worked closely with the owner and partnered with his clean aesthetic style, choosing lovely pale, bleached woods and stones in warm white tones. To soften it and bring everything together, we blended textures and materials to give the interiors a contemporary, elegant appeal.”

projects along with their more carefree yet sophisticated Caribbean aesthetic results in a lovely and gracious balance in styles. They also remark on the dual commitment they bring to each project, no matter on which side of the Atlantic they are working.

Adding to their growing portfolio, the Ward & Co team is currently working on a major project (with others in the pipeline) on private Jumby Island. One of those projects is an elegant beachfront residence, rich with deep blues, bold and soft caramels, sumptuous silks and the absolute ‘wow’ factor the owner desired. Another home on Jumby Island newly designed by the team is a 10,080 sq. ft residence on 3.5 acres done in a unique eclectic style. Ward & Co brought fresh new Caribbean flavours mixed

Four Seasons Nevis Peak Residences

Another project still in development and projected for occupancy in late 2025 is the recently announced Four Seasons Nevis Peak Residences, with 58 new build condominium luxury residences. These homes will offer one, two, and three-bedroom units plus penthouses in six low rise buildings. Ward & Co is commissioned to fully design and furnish the new condos and has unveiled plans to craft each with “alfresco living in mind with the interiors reflecting modern Caribbean design. Here again we understand it’s all about the view,” promises Ward.

The open concept floor plans offer floor-to-ceiling windows, covered terraces with green living walls, natural wood and local stone details all designed to showcase the views of Nevis Peak, the Caribbean Sea, and lush rainforest that surrounds the residences.

This talented and increasingly sought-after design team is also poised to begin redesign of the interiors on private 4 and 5 bedroom Pinney’s Beach Villas on the Four

Seasons Estates on Nevis in the coming months.

When asked why she chose to live and work in the Caribbean, Sarah Ward was effusive. “The people and their open friendliness are the main reasons we love it here. That, plus the impossibly beautiful colours of the sea and greenery combined with the freedom to wake up every morning to the peace and serenity of these islands. Who could ask for more?” | P

An interior designer’s paradise, an architectural wonderland, an intimate playground, a foodies delight, a tennis buff’s dream, a private villa enclave with secluded sun-kissed coves.

So

many

delightfulmore enamouring phrases can

be used to describe the charm and laid back ambiance of Round Hill Hotel and Villas, located on the outskirts of Montego Bay, Jamaica.

This heritage luxury property opened its doors in the 1950’s and has been the vacation destination for several illustrious personalities that includes John F. Kennedy, Paul Newman, and Bob Hope, as well as Ralph Lauren who holidays here at his two private villas on the hotel’s 100-acre estate — beachside villa in the day and the lofty hillside villa in the evening.

The entrance to Round Hill — reminiscent of a plantation great house — welcomed us with deep brown polished solid mahogany doors sporting burnished brass locks, handles, latches, and strike plates. Overhead in the centre of the hall was a shimmering wax candlelit brass candelabra with a collection of white orchids in full bloom on the table below, evoking the charm of old world elegance, and setting the stage for a glamorous long weekend at this fabled luxury hotel.

Our journey into a world of refined elegance

Our stay at Round Hill Hotel and Villas was perfectly timed to experience the 2nd anniversary of the Round Hill Cup featuring high-quality tennis matches against the stunning backdrop of verdant greens on the hilly terrain and the azure blues of the Caribbean Sea. This year’s (2024) tournament featured former tennis pros Kevin Anderson and Nicholas Monroe, hosted by Round Hill’s Tennis Director Yussuf Migoko. Last year Marcelo Arevalo, recent winner of the French Open Grand Slam doubles, was in residence and shared his expertise with hotel guests, setting a high standard of excellence for the inaugural Cup.

Entering our Ralph Lauren designed beach fronting suite, we were greeted with his timeless style, fine craftsmanship, sleek architectural lines, and ivory coloured decor. The warm inviting space had us pause to take in the calm, serene airy space that we would slip away to, from the hotel’s activities, to relax and recharge to the sound of lapping waves.

An evening of culinary delights

Donning evening attire of slacks and flowing dress with cashmere sweater and shawl in hand, we head off to the cocktail lounge to meet other guests, while enjoying flutes of Laurent-Perrier Rosé, to the jazzy rhythms of our pianist regaling us with the likes of ‘Autumn Falls’, ‘Unspoken Words’, ‘Amélie’. Dinner that evening was on the

Seaside Terrace under the starry skies. We were escorted by white jacket waiters to our table immaculately set with crystal stemware, silverware, fine china, and linen napkins. Executive Chef Martin Maginley personally introduced the menu to us making recommendations for our culinary journey that evening. I started with a pumpkin bisque, followed by a mushroom ravioli, then a blackened grouper paired with a floral noised Roussanne, closing my dining experience with guava ice cream and a digestif of Jamaican rum from Hampden Estate renowned for its intense fruity esters, funky nose and smooth finish — a connoisseurs’ delight. The evening’s entertainment was by a Jamaican Mento band, a genre of music originating in the rural areas of the island in the 1940s and played with a banjo, drums, and rhumba box, while singing tales of life in the deep countryside — which can be hilarious if you can pick up on the patois dialect used to sing the story lines of everyday life of country folk. Some well-known mento songs sung that night included “Day-O”, “Linstead Market”, “Jamaica Farewell”, which brought back feelings of nostalgia from previous trips to the island.

Reminiscent of a plantation great house —the villa welcomed us with deep brown polished solid mahogany doors sporting burnished brass locks and plates.

Planning for our Caribbean home

The next morning we met with Josef Forstmayr, Managing Director of Round Hill Hotel and Villas, to discuss our plans to invest in a tropical villa as we have fallen in love with the people, climate, and slower pace of life in the islands. He took us to see the newly built Villa #14 on an elevation with a commanding view of the Caribbean Sea, set in lush vegetation with manicured gardens and swimming pools. Its open air design was flooded with natural light, with a constant cooling breeze. Its interior decor captured a kaleidoscope of tropical colours with custom-designed bamboo furniture, intricate millwork, rattan panelling all created by master Jamaican artisans, whose sculptures, paintings, craft, wicker, and handmade furnishings filled the rooms with signature pieces, making for a homely and truly authentic Caribbean setting. The villa owners had travelled to the island several times before making the decision to build their dream home at Round Hill, for use as both a family get away, and to place in the rental pool when not in use by the family. We then went on a walking tour of the property to see available plots of land with property groundsman Dave Hamilton — with a treasure trove of knowledge on the property.

As we headed through thick foliage, we were mesmerised by the breathtaking views that greeted us in an almost fairytale setting at every stop we made, where time seemed to stand still, with my favourite area a seaside bluff, cosseted in rolling hills, overlooking the Caribbean Sea and beyond, with distant views of the city of Montego Bay.

Tennis the “sport of kings” beckons

At dinner the previous evening we met some young married couples who were travelling the world before starting their families, and had signed up for and jetted into Montego Bay to participate in this year’s Round Hill Cup. Open

only to 16 entrants, it extended an intimate experience for participants in the Tennis Fantasy Camp allowing players to improve their tennis skills in an exclusive and private setting with invited Pros — Kevin and Nicholas. Round Hill in-house guests were treated to the spectacle of Pro Exhibition Tennis matches played on the immaculately maintained premium HarTru clay tennis courts, built for a unique high performance playing experience. Today was the Fantasy Camp Team Championships, eagerly awaited by us all, as entrants used their newly attained skills in matches to up their game in the friendly camaraderie spirit of the Round Hill Cup. The winners were

recognised in a Pro-am Awards ceremony, followed by hearty cheers leading into a sumptuous celebratory meal of Jamaican favourites — Pepper Pot soup, Jerked meats, escovitch fish, oxtail, curry goat, and sorrel (hibiscus) drink spiked with lots of rum, as the reggae band serenaded us with island beats and fancy dance moves.

Pampering ourselves

Alate start the next morning after the festivities of the previous evening, we headed to a secluded area of the property with a restored 18th-century villa that houses the Spa and nearby Yoga Pavilion and Gym, located on some 10 acres of exquisitely manicured lawns that gently slope towards a tranquil private beach with a serene view of the Caribbean Sea. Starting with light weights in the gym, we joined a yoga stretch class looking out into a forested area filled with nature’s greenery, then headed into the treatment suite for a doubles massage with Elemis naturopathy products and essential oils. Slipping in and out of our dreamy wonderland as the caring hands of our masseuses melted our stresses away, we turned our heads to each other and smiled with a slight nod of approval — Round Hill Hotel and Villas in Montego Bay was the perfect place for our Caribbean home. | P

FiNAL LOOK WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL UNDER THE FLORIDA SUN

From January to March, in Florida, the Winter Equestrian Festival promotes horse riding as a way of life. For 13 weeks, riders from more than 40 countries and all 50 US states come together at the Wellington International complex. All levels are represented, from amateurs to the most renowned professionals. Some 7,000 horses, 4,000 riders and 1,000 trainers base themselves in Florida’s sunny climes for three months of international competition. The Rolex Finale Week is the culmination of the festival, with the highlight being the 5* Rolex Grand Prix, staged on the International Arena sand track in the Equestrian Village and featuring some of the world’s leading equestrian talents. Since 2012, Rolex has partnered with the elite equestrian centre, further enhancing the quality of competition. Through this relationship, the brand became Official Timepiece of the Winter Equestrian Festival. Rolex.com
