For three-quarters of a century, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in collaboration with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania has offered an enticing platform for human achievement, spirit and endeavour; qualities with which Rolex, partners of the race for near twenty years, has a deep affinity. First held in 1945, the start has a traditional lunchtime slot on 26 December. In Antigua and Barbuda, the vibrant energy of art, music, fashion, spoken word, and dance will take over the twin-island paradise for seven days during the second annual Antigua and Barbuda Art Week (ABAW) from 27 November to 3 December 2024.

The event is a celebration of creativity and culture that positions this twin-island as a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts. Throughout the week, the landscape will be adorned with creative and poignant displays of Antigua and Barbuda’s rich artistic creations at stunning exhibitions. Art Week will resonate with the sounds of live music bands performing, evocative spoken words of poets, electrifying dance ensembles, and the creativity of artisans and fashion designers.
AAs we count down to this colourful event, we shine a spotlight on three remarkable artists: Heather Doram, Stephen Murphy, and Vincent Pryce. Each artist brings a unique perspective, blending tradition, innovation and their experiences to express the rich and diverse cultural landscape of Antigua and Barbuda.
Heather Doram, MFA, GCM: A Pioneer of Antiguan Art
Heather Doram, a veteran artist with a distinguished career, stands as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s foremost contemporary creators. Doram’s work is deeply rooted in her belief that art can be a powerful catalyst for change. “We have the power to raise consciousness, stimulate debate, and promote change,” she asserts, reflecting on her commitment to using art as a vehicle for social commentary. Her art explores themes of being black and female in a male-centred world, often employing traditional women’s techniques, such as sewing, to craft pieces that are both personal and universal.
Not only will art enthusiasts get to view the art on display, inspired spectators will have the chance to explore technical aspects of various art forms.

Doram’s journey began at the Antigua Girls High School and the Leeward Islands Teacher Training College before she pursued formal art studies at Jamaica’s Edna Manley College for the Visual & Performing Arts, and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the United States. Her achievements at SCAD include being named to the Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and having her thesis work acquired for the college’s permanent collection. Her accolades extend to being one of 12 Caribbean artists selected for a prestigious prize in 2004 and participating in the Textile Museum of Canada’s 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games exhibition.
Doram’s textile art, characterised by layers of felt, acrylics, metallic threads, and found objects, celebrates the complexities of womanhood. “I layer because no one surface can tell the whole story”, she explains. Outside the studio, Doram is a versatile creative force, with roles ranging from actress to gallery owner, costume designer to visual arts educator. Her contributions have left an indelible mark on Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural scene, earning her the Grand Cross of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit in 2002. Stephen Murphy: The Environmental Visionary
Stephen Murphy, a native Antiguan, channels his passion for art into a practice deeply informed by sustainability. His early artistic inclinations, inspired by the vibrant colours and landscapes of his homeland, led him to the Ontario College of Art and Design in Canada, where he refined his unique style. Murphy’s art, infused with Caribbean influences and global experiences, captures the essence of the places he has visited.
At the heart of Murphy’s work is his commitment to environmental consciousness. He repurposes recycled materials—metal, wood, and computer parts—into stunning works of art that speak to his creative ingenuity and dedication to protecting the environment. In addition to his recycled artwork, his vibrant acrylic paintings, vividly portray scenes of local life and landscapes. His use of colour and technique brings these scenes to life, capturing the essence of Antiguan culture and heritage. Vincent Pryce / Nkoye Zifah: The Multi-Talented Creative
Vincent Pryce, known artistically as Nkoye Zifah, is a versatile artist whose work spans multimedia visual art, culinary art, body art, and photography. Born and raised in the Point Community of Antigua, Pryce’s art reflects his experiences and observations of life’s many facets, from love and family to politics and religion, regional and international affairs. His collaborative work includes projects with renowned artists like Paul Gerben and Guava de Artist, further showcasing his artistic range.
Pryce’s recent accomplishments include participation in a USA. cultural exchange programme, where he engaged inner-city youth through visual art and performance. He was recognised by the island’s Director of Culture Mr. Khan Cordice as one of Antigua’s most diverse/multi-talented artists. In commemoration of this accolade, he donated a 24x36” acrylic painting on canvas to the Department of Culture entitled “Madras Dadli”.
His contributions to Antigua’s art scene are further highlighted by his large-scale murals, including a 1200-square-foot piece at the American University of Antigua and a 1675-square-foot beachfront mural at Hermitage Bay Resort. I sat down with Kevin Ching, the award-winning founder and designer of Big Horn Eyewear, launched in 2011. What makes his eyewear so extraordinary?

zoo in the United States of America. Because of Miami’s sub-tropical climate, the Zoo has animals from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia so you can encounter everything from Okapi African painted dogs to white-faced Saki monkeys and elegant Black-Neck Swans from South America.
Even though I’ve lived in Africa, never have I been so close to an African elephant as I was to one here where the Zoo’s skilfully created moats with sides of natural greenery provide just enough space between animals and visitors so that animals are never caged. Instead, they are “grouped according to their geographic territories” with soil, foliage, and trees matched to the areas from which they come. Reticulated giraffes, rather special even in Africa, sprawl on their lawns or approach the visitors’ second-storey wooden viewing structure so closely you can feed but not touch them. Yes!
Zoo Miami is an active leader currently involved in global wildlife and environmental conservation initiatives.
Iwas lucky enough to join Zoo Miami members to see the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue donating old fire hoses which are used to suspend objects from trees in animal enrichment programmes, keeping animal minds energised. Nellie, a 55-year-old Asian elephant, took advantage of the firemen to get a proper shower of water invigorating her in what is called “Elephant Firehose Day”.

”Set on nearly 750 acres, with four miles of paths, 2,251 animals, and 385 species, Zoo Miami is somewhere you can spend an entire day. Walking up to a glass pane, only to find a jaguar sitting a few feet on the other side amongst rocks and foliage, calmly watching me, was an experience like no other. Such a beautiful animal, as are the Sumatran tigers. Now fewer than 400 of them exist in the wild today and 72 in USA zoos, so Zoo Miami staff were thrilled when in January 2022 N’dari, a second cub, was born to their two Sumatran tigers. With such success Zoo Miami has decided to double the existing habitat space and embrace a breeding programme to ensure the species’ survival. Ronald Stayton, Chief Development Officer at Zoo Miami Foundation, told me that US$4,000,000 is needed to achieve this goal and already US$1,300,000 has been raised so if anyone has US$2,000,000 to contribute to this incredible

cause, the breeding facilities will bear your name. Currently the façade, near the Zoo’s entrance, is inspired by the Angkor Wat 12th century Hindu-Buddhist temples in the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Miami Zoo’s colourful history goes back to 1948 when a road show exchanged animals for truck repairs and then a circus went out of business. Originally located at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne, in 1965 Hurricane Betsy killed 250 of the Zoo’s 1,200 animals. In 1970 Dade County applied for the Naval Air Station Richmond’s 600 acres of land to move the Zoo. Construction started in 1975 and on 4 July 1980, Miami Metro Zoo opened. Over the years with everything from Hurricane Andrew in 1992 to brush fires in 1996, Zoo staff and conservationists with public support have kept the Zoo thriving until in July 2010 the Zoo was renamed Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens aka Zoo Miami. With five veterinarians on staff full-time, a new Sea Turtle Hospital, and plans for a complete Animal Hospital to open by 2027 at a cost of US$25 million, you can imagine how busy Zoo Miami Foundation President and

gears up for the 250th Anniversary of the ‘First Salute’
The King of the Netherlands and the President of the USA have been invited to attend the 250th anniversary celebrations of the ‘First Salute’ in 2026
As the first place in the world to recognise the independence declaration of the fledgling USA in the year 1776 when American merchant ship, Andrew Doria (refitted as a navy vessel) fired a salute of 13 shots as it entered Statia waters, the then Dutch Governor, Johannes de Graaff, gave the order to return a salute of 11 shots. That veritable day on 16th November is each year celebrated as “Statia America Day”. In those days Sint Eustatius (aka Statia) was the most profitable asset of the Dutch West India Company and as a free port with some 50,000 residents it generated immense wealth for traders — that included the family of USA Founding Father
Alexander Hamilton who himself lived on the island. In recognition of Statia’s important role in supporting the USA’s independence, to include the sale in secret of munitions to the 13 original colonies, USA President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited Statia in 1939 — an island where his own forefathers amassed a fortune some 200 years ago — to present a commemorative plaque that is today mounted in the historic fortress of Fort Oranje in the capital Oranjestad.

this otherwise sleepy Special Municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Just over 8 square miles (21 km²), with its now 3,500 residents, it is known for its pristine diving spots, eco-tourism, hiking trails, and heritage landmarks. Government officials, history buffs, archaeologists, and nature lovers, are increasingly flocking to the island as preparations gather pace for its 250th anniversary of ‘The First Salute’, set for 16 November 2026. On that date, the King of the Netherlands and the President of the USA have been invited to attend celebrations to re-enact the events of that fortuitous day which has created a lasting bond between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United States of America.
Sint Eustatius in the 18th and 19th centuries was perfect for trading, with its deep-water anchorage in Oranje Bay, the Lower Town of Oranjestad. During the busiest days over 200 ships sailed into
the harbour at lengths of 100ft or longer, each flying the flags of European Kingdoms who had diplomatic missions on the island to protect their profitable trading interests in the port.

A15-minute drive from the airport on country roads passed idyllic rural settings with sweeping views of hamlets in valleys below as we ascended a hill leading to the Golden Rock Dive and Nature Resort located on the southern shores of the island on 40 acres of manicured grounds. Looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean, the property has planted over 130,000 colourful shrubs, trees, and flowering plants across the resort which has attracted scores of birds including hummingbirds darting around and building nests in the foliage. The rooms, cottages, and villas are built at a low angled profile to complement the curves, contours, and slope of the land, to amplify the aura of the Quill Mountain towering behind the Resort. This extinct volcano is often shrouded in clouds and adds a sense of mystery that appeals to hikers to come and discover her secrets.
My well appointed suite with kitchenette in soothing neutral tones had a large balcony, overlooking the gardens and one of two swimming pools on the property. As I breathe in the salty air, look-

ing at yachts sailing by on the cerulean blue sea below, they piqued my interest to discover some of Statia’s 30-plus dive spots that led to National Geographic in 2022 declaring the island the best place in the Caribbean to dive. To capitalise on Statia being awarded this honour, the Resort opened a PADI Scuba Dive Centre offering valet guided tours in the island’s expansive marine park filled with archaeological treasures and the most scenic underwater topography in the West Indies filled with colourful sponges, sea fans, and corals. The Centre also has a manmade 30-foot deep salt water training lagoon with a sunken bus to allow for realistic practice dives to prepare divers for the open sea. Touring the Resort on its electric Tram, I passed the mini-golf course, gym, tennis-pickle-paddle ball courts, multipurpose sports fields, and large playground, making for a myriad of activities to keep guests active while holidaying on the property.

As the afternoon sun blazed overhead I hopped off the Tram at the Breezes Restaurant stop, to cool off and eat in the open air diner to take advantage of the tropical winds whipping up from the sea towards the Quill. Designed in a rotunda

style, its interior has elegant wood panels and finishes with wicker lanterns creating a feast for the eyes and a conversation piece among guests. Starting with its signature cocktail Statia Flower to break the heat, I chose a selection of zesty salads and tangy wraps while enjoying full views of the towering Quill, with the clouds now lifted and hummingbirds flitting around in the surrounding gardens. Over lunch I met some divers who came to Statia for their 100th dive, and were marvelling at their dive to the ‘Charlie Brown’ wreck, purposely sunk at about 100 feet in 2003 to create an artificial reef now brimming with a
kaleidoscope of marine life. Sport Dive Magazine was quoted as saying this dive site is the “biggest” reason to dive in Statia. The divers saw an abundance of marine life that included the golden head puppet fish, big-eyed trevallies, and barracudas all roaming the ship. They were in awe at the near pristine state of the diving spots they visited around the island, giving a thumbs up to National Geographic’s vote.
Rekindling history with immersive walks
After lunch I headed to Forte Oranje for a walking historical tour following the footsteps of traders in the 18th and 19th century to

learn how they worked, lived, and socialised in Statia in its Golden Years. Statia had some 75 plantations producing sugar cane, tobacco, cotton, and indigo. Its warehouses located on the oceanfront of the lower town were filled with furniture, wine, clothing, ceramics, spices, tobacco, slaves, guns, household supplies, fine fabrics, silver, and gold. Trade was open to all nations, and up to 200 merchant ships flying the flags of numerous European kingdoms would be waiting in the harbour to collect and deliver goods to trade around the world. Resident traders in Statia were not only Dutch nationals, but came from several different countries, with

multiple religions and Christian denominations that saw the building of a Synagogue and the Dutch Reformed Church on the island. Statia had numerous diplomatic missions in operation manned by foreign emissaries to take care of the interests of both their citizens and merchant ship operations under their nation’s flag in the Dutch island. There were no trade barriers or protectionist provisions in place (that were common to other trading ports) and considered the most sophisticated free port ‘no questions asked’ operation and logistically efficient multilingual trading outpost in the New World, making fortunes for traders.
As the sun began to set, I slowly walked down the Old Slave Path — the oldest paved road on the island (1787) — and reflected on hardships in past centuries of enslaved Africans and those not so fortunate to benefit from the riches of that era. On reaching the oceanfront, restaurants, bars, and hotels now replace warehouses whose only traces are crumbling buildings and stone foundations. Lively music pulled me towards the UNESCO Heritage Site Old Gin House Hotel’s seaside lounge for sundowner drinks. With a cocktail in hand, I looked out on the sea and visualised the olden days when merchant vessels filled
the harbour now replaced by vacationers on sailboats bobbing in the surf.
Dinner was a few steps away on the harbour at the Barrel House Restaurant, a popular eatery with locals located in an 18th century period building, renowned for its tasty island gastronomy from goat ravioli to baked grouper.
Ascending to the highest point on Statia
The next morning I headed out on an early hike to the Quill with a local tour guide who shared a wealth of knowledge from his 55 years in the industry taking us near to the top called Mazinga Peak at 1,972 feet (601m). Our 5-hour round trip hike took us through many scenic spots for photo shoots. We identified several orchids and marveled at cashew trees which the indigenous people of Statia named this island after — “Aloi” as they were so plentiful in days gone by, but now depleted for the gum they produced used to seal boxes being shipped by merchants in days of old.
With a 360 degree view of the island, from the top of the Quill we saw the neighbouring islands of Saba and St. Kitts, and aeroplanes taking off from the Statia airport. For experienced hikers the interior of the collapsed volcano cone is
a nature wonderland, but would add another 4 hours to our journey with much more difficult terrain. So, instead we listened to our guide’s stories on this marvel of nature on his descents into its tropical rainforest to search for the most delicious honey on Statia.

Muscles aching from my hike, it was a perfect time on my return to the Golden Rock Dive and Nature Resort to check in for a massage with local herbs and oils that had me drifting off into dreamland. Dinner that evening was at the Resort’s seaside restaurant, Bobbie’s Beach Club, lit up on the outside with a spectacular display and designed on the inside with a kaleidoscope of colours as iridescent as a hummingbird’s plumage. With its sushi bar, grill, barbeque, and pizza oven, I was spoiled for choice and ordered a selection of Sushi rolls, Sashimi, and Nigiri paired with white wines. Closing the evening on the Club’s patio with a Yuzu cheesecake, I gazed into the clear starry skies above while reminiscing on my newly found island gem — Statia.

VISITING THE WOLFSONIAN MUSEUM IN MIAMI BEACH —
[ PLACES OF INTEREST ] WOW! was my first impression on entering the Wolfsonian Museum.

Around since 1995, the Wolfsonian showcases a collection of modern age of design, from the Industrial Revolution back to the end of World War II. Among the nearly 180,000 pieces in the museum’s collection are paintings, textiles, furniture, industrial design objects, rare books, and magazines.

ut that’s what this whole museum is all about. Mitchell “Micky” Wolfson Jr. has spent a lifetime “preserving what otherwise might be lost”, especially objects of art, architecture, and design. The Art Deco façade of the building at the corner of Washington Avenue and 10th street in Miami Beach itself is wondrous, the music inside enchanting. How did I not know about this place before?
“Wrestler” 1929, a bulky six-and-a-half-foot tall cast aluminium sculpture created by Dudley Vaill Talcott stands guard before the fountain area. Originally exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art in NYC, then in 1932 at the 10th Olympic Games in Los Angeles, I couldn’t help thinking that his symbol of potency seemed a bit unimpressive in comparison with the well-endowed bronze “Redemption Song Monument” in Emancipation Park, Kingston, Jamaica by Laura Facey which caused such controversy back in 2003.
Affiliated with Florida International University since 1997, the Wolfsonian
was preceded by a sister institution, the Wolfsoniana in Genoa, Italy where Micky Wolfson was serving as an American diplomat. But let the Chief Curator, Silvia Barisione, tell the story:
“I was born in Genoa, went to the university in Genoa, and majored in German literature and art history. I went to Milan to work for a contemporary art gallery but then my professor told me ‘They’re looking for a person to work on a project with Micky Wolfson who is creating a study centre.’ Micky Wolfson was very smart because he came to the university to say, ‘Okay, I want to work on my collection

with some students who have a master’s in art history.’ So, it was two boys and a girl. I started at the end of 1991. We researched the collection that Micky had collected in Genoa, which was mostly Italian. Here it’s very international, mostly United States, Europe, focusing mostly on Italy, Great Britain, and Germany, but Micky always says we don’t collect by country, but by language. He says we collect English, German, Dutch, Italian, a lot of Japanese material and then Slavic and Celtic. He’s a unique person. His curiosity is incredible. He never can stop. And he is the biggest traveller who knows every place, even in the most provincial city, he knows everything. Where is the best antique dealer? Where is the best bookseller or the more hidden bookseller? He finds it and also the best restaurant. The Wolfsoniana is a very nice museum, smaller than this one, and more chronological. It starts from the taste for the exotic at the turn of the century. We have a new Egyptian
room, some Moorish architectural drawings, and then goes up to the 1940s with a lot of Fascist art, Rationalist and Novecento furniture and design, and ends up with a Vespa scooter from 1946.
“He lived between Miami and Genoa so I decided that I would be interested to come here. Micky pushed for me to come to Miami to have more a kind of bridge between Genoa and Miami. The museum here opened in 1995. The period of the collection ranges from 1850 starting from the 1851 Crystal Palace exhibition in London. We have a lot of material about universal exhibitions in our library. So that’s why we decided to start from 1850 and we end in 1950. It’s 100 years of art history, architecture, and also with all the social and economic background of the period.”

WOn a totally different tack, the museum also displays Nazi art. The painting “Autobahnbrucke [Autobahn Bridge]” 1940 by Wilfried Schaflein demonstrates how Hitler and the Nazi regime used art and architecture as propaganda to promote its achievements, “including feats of engineering and construction.”
With too many fascinating paintings and artefacts to describe here (my husband loves “Idolo dei Prisma” 1925 by Ferruccio Ferrazzi – needless to say a naked woman), I must note that the 3rd floor library contains over 125,000 items dating 1850-1950 and is “strong in materials relating to world’s fairs, architecture, interior decorations, war and political propaganda, militarism and colonialism,
hile the beach side of Miami Beach may be the wild side, this side is the mild side, everyone clad in shorts, laid back and totally at ease at 10 a.m. when I arrived for opening hour. The only person I shared the museum with besides the lovely curator was a Russian pianist who works for an American NGO. So don’t be afraid to bring the family to see this incredible museum. The gift shop seems to have children very much in mind! Two hours is plenty of time and the café is intimate.
Coming from a family which owns the Wometco Company, Mitchell Wolfson is not only a former diplomat, but also a philanthropist and author. His 80-page The Wolfsonian-FIU Founder’s Choice volume is a delight: well-written and beautifully illustrated. I highly recommend reading that and visiting the museum which is closed Mon/Tues. OWNING A PART OF THE OCEAN CLUB

In 1962, retail magnate Huntington Hartford welcomed his friends— including Sinatra, Elvis, Hearst and a host of dukes, earls and ambassadors— to the “Bal du Paradis,” his debut party for Paradise Island and his new resort there, The Ocean Club. In the ensuing six decades, the property – now known as The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas – has hosted royalty, the filming of two James Bond movies, and 62 years of discerning guests seeking best of the best beaches, service and luxury.
“The Ocean Club has 107 guestrooms and suites, including our beautiful beach villas,” said John Conway, the resort’s general manager. “Those villas in particular are in high demand.”
While many guests have stayed at The Ocean Club for weeks and months at a time, there has never been an opportunity to actually own a part of the iconic resort — although regulars have inquired about the possibility. Now, the Ocean Club is meeting that demand with the debut of The Ocean Club, Four Seasons Residences, Bahamas.
This next generation of the Ocean Club will allow a select few to weave their own story into the fabric of the property’s history. More tangibly, owners will be able to add their residences to the hotel’s room inventory.
“For our guests who are seeking more living space, multiple bedrooms and a kitchen, yet all the connectivity of the resort—it’s going to be amazing to be able to offer this,” Conway said.
All 67 Private Residences will feature ocean views from floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive outdoor verandas. Layouts will range from 3,124-square-foot two-bedroom and 4,073-square-foot three-bedroom homes to 5,028-square-foot four-bedroom offerings. In addition, five-bedroom beach villas and penthouses will offer copious outdoor private living space and private pools. Prices range from $7 million to over $20 million.
The newly-introduced four-building residential enclave will offer an array of amenities all its own. Highlights include an oceanfront
swimming pool with private cabanas and a clubhouse, an owners’ library, as well as a lounge, private cellar and rum room. Shared ownership with the resort means that Four Seasons’ acclaimed service standards and personal touches will carry over to the new residences. “Our guests have come to know and love our team members,” Conway said, noting that a number of his staff have been with the property for more than 30 years.
“Our dedicated team really sets us apart.”
In addition to that dedication to service, the resort also offers residence owners and guests its famed beach and acres of lush grounds, complete with the remains of a 12th-century monastery nestled within immaculate, Versailles-inspired gardens. More modern resort amenities include three swimming pools, six Har-Tru tennis courts, and a nearby Weiskopf-designed championship golf course. There’s also Dune, the exceptional restaurant created by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.
“I view the resort basically as an extension of their residence,” stated Conway.

Promoting the twin island’s tourism and tradition of sailing excellence, Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism, Charles Fernandez, congratulated the winner of the annual Antigua and Barbuda Hamptons Challenge Regatta at Sag Harbor, Long Island’s gold coast of sailing. John Pearson sailed ahead of 20plus crewed yachts in this handicapped race around Noyack Bay on 11 August 2024 and walked away with the top prize of full entry to the 2025 Antigua Sailing Week to be held 27 April-3 May.
As a warmup to the prestigious Antigua Sailing Week, the Long Island Regatta, organised by the Peconic Bay Sailing Association and funded by the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Board, was attended by some of sailing’s notables such as Tyrique Adams, who also participated in the race. This young Antiguan sailor is making waves with his sailing skills and indeed his presence underscored the event and the
Association’s altruistic spirit as proceeds from the Regatta supported a local charity, i-TRI, a community-based programme that transforms young girls lives through the sport of triathlon.
Lauding the competitive spirit and camaraderie amongst the participants Minister Fernandez commented on the success of the event while looking ahead to the much anticipated Antigua Sailing Week.
“We are thrilled to continue raising awareness of Antigua and Barbuda as the Caribbean’s sailing capital.
