FOPE JEWELRY, ITALIAN TO THE CORE

FOPE is an Italian goldsmith that was established in 1929. All of the jewels are proudly made in-house at the factory in Vicenza, Italy, thanks to a unique combination of craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.

The brand’s collections share the distinctive character of the iconic Novecento mesh, a gold chain which features a timeless design and feels incredibly smooth on the skin. With the invention of Flex’it, a patented system launched in 2007, FOPE introduced a contemporary twist to it and its bracelets became stretchable by means of minuscule gold springs. Today this ground-breaking concept is applied to rings and necklaces as well, making fine jewelry comfortable and precious, suitable for all ages and genders.

FOPE’s innovative soul has expanded its range by pursuing its original idea of Everyday Luxury, encompassing collections that push the boundaries of innovation, technology and elegance. Jewels to wear, stack and enjoy.

PERUSING IN PARADISE

Keep your memories of Bermuda alive long after you ’ve returned home by picking up treasures evocative of the island ’s sights, sweet scents, flavours, and more.

There’s no doubt about it: Bermuda’s idyllic location and stylish finds make it a retail paradise where you’ll find everything you are looking for — and more. When you think about a shopping destination, big cities like New York, London, or Paris come to mind. But with coastally curated, pink sand–inspired shopping, Bermuda has them beat. Even if you don’t intend to do more than window-shop, you’re likely to end up making a purchase — or a few — here.

ON THE HUNT IN HAMILTON

Begin your shopping excursion in the capital city of Hamilton, where picturesque colonial buildings make for a cheery commercial centre and a variety of dining and drinking options are ready to refuel you when you need a break from browsing.

Starting on Front Street, if you are looking for Bermuda-inspired adornments, Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery is the place to visit. Many of her jewellery creations incorporate Bermuda’s pink sand, giving travellers the opportunity to take a piece of Bermuda back home. You can even enjoy a champagne studio tour for a sneak peek into how each piece is made or book a VIP custom jewellery experience with Alexandra to design your own one-of-akind piece.

If you enjoy an intimate shopping experience, contact Walker Christopher Goldsmiths, where you can work one-onone with an associate in their Hamilton store’s private showroom. Walker Christopher showcases an excellent collection of authentic coins, including gold doubloons and silver pieces of eight salvaged from sunken galleons, as well as Greek and Roman coins dating from 400 BC, which are mounted in pendants, earrings, and cuff links.

MAKING WAVES

IN THE MODELLING WORLD

YOUʼVE PROBABLY NOTICED the unparalleled natural beauty of Bermuda — not only in its natural landscape but in its people, who are beautiful inside and out. Even if you’re not from Bermuda, you might recognise one local, 23-year-old named Aliana King. Of Bermudian and Puerto Rican descent, King is making a name for herself in the modelling world after signing with the New York branch of Elite Model Management in 2022.

Born and raised in Bermuda, she left after high school to pursue this passion; and four years later, her dream came true. By the time Elite brought King on board, she was already a force in the modelling world. At age 16, she and a few other Bermudian models were featured in a swimwear shoot in the American lifestyle magazine Nylon Her likeness has graced the pages of Vogue, Marie Claire, and Elle, and she achieved “cover girl” status with Elle’s 2019 Mexican edition. King modelled for Maybelline in 2018 and appeared in promotional videos for a Nordstrom/ Nike sportswear collaboration and a line of loungewear designed by Kim Kardashian. She even starred in a 2020 music video for Lenny Kravitz’s song, “Ride,” bringing a youthful exuberance to the footage filmed on location in Paris.

After living in New York and London, she moved to Los

Angeles in 2020. Now backed by Elite, King is poised to join giants like Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford, and Heidi Klum, who were also represented by the renowned agency. She announced her signing to the world via her Instagram page, which has 127,000 followers.

“Life has a way of letting you know you’re in the right place,” she says in a post featuring a selection of photos and videos of her life in New York. “Four years ago, I visited New York with my dad to sign with an agency. Even back then, without knowing much about the modelling industry, I knew that I wanted to be with @elitenyc. Now, four years and a whole lot of knowledge, commitment, and growth later, I’m so happy to be signed with my dream agency. I’ve always been blessed with an amazing support system, and I’m so grateful for this new chapter. I have an overwhelming feeling that I’m where I need to be.”

In 2023, the Bermudian model was featured in a campaign for David Yurman, one of America’s most recognised jewellery companies due to their signature design concepts. Other top names who have modelled for the brand include Gisele Bündchen, Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss.

King has used her social media and modelling success to inspire younger generations, including her work with the #curlygirlroundtable social media initiative, which aims to spark meaningful conversations between people of mixed ethnicities.

Next door to Walker Christopher Goldsmiths is Crisson & Hind African Gallery. Here, you’ll find truly unique mementos. Browse their new 2,500-square-foot location amongst their carvings of figures and animals, which showcase the skill of their creators — the Shona people of Zimbabwe.

A few shops down is Flying Colours, where you’ll find two levels of everything ranging from casual clothing to boutique wear to island souvenirs and gifts. There’s truly something for everyone on your list.

Take a walk back down to Front Street, and on the corner across from the birdcage, a landmark where police were once stationed to direct traffic at the intersection, is the renowned Goslings store. This is the place to get all your

duty-free liquor purchases as well as their Goslings merchandise. Look out for Goslings limited-edition rums, including the Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum, bottled in once-used Champagne bottles individually dipped in black wax, or the extremely rare Goslings Papa Seal Single Barrel Bermuda Rum.

Right next door, make a stop at Brown & Co. In-store items include designer fragrances, sunglasses, and accessories, as well as locally crafted Bermuda gifts. Ready for a cup of tea? Check out their adorable café overlooking the Hamilton Harbour.

Just a few stores further down on Front Street are Davidrose Studio, The English Sports Shop, and Lusso. Davidrose Studio is a husband-and-wife

team well known for their signature Ocean Collection, pieces inspired by Bermuda’s turquoise waters, and the Bermuda Collection, which captures the brilliance of island life. Steps away is The English Sports Shop, offering iconic Bermuda shorts along with upscale attire for the resort and yachting crowd.

Nearby, you’ll find the high-fashion boutique Lusso, where well-known brands like Lilly Pulitzer and Fendi are offered at better prices than you’ll find in the U.S. thanks to Bermuda’s absence of sales tax.

Your trip around the block ends at 59 Front, followed by Chatham House on the corner by Burnaby Hill. 59 Front offers an extensive range of exclusive brands in beauty and cosmetics, designer fragrances, jewellery, accessories, and Bermuda gifts. Whilst at Chatham House, Bermuda’s premier specialty tobacconist, you can pick up cigar brands like Cohiba, H. Upmann, Montecristo, and more.

Cuarenta Bucaneros is another superb option for cigars.

A short walk away, 27th Century Boutique is well worth a visit. Their most prominent and exclusive ladies’ lines are Joseph Ribkoff, Clara Sunwoo, Sympli, and Last Tango; and they have a variety of outstanding lines for men.

The Bermuda Monetary Authority coins feature aspects of Bermuda’s wildlife and history, and in 2023, they released the Bird of Paradise coin, the fifth coin of its flower series. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Authority’s Museum of Notes and Coins and purchase one of their beautiful commemorative coins.

You can find a myriad of bling and baubles at Crisson Jewellers on Queen Street, a family-run jewellery store since 1922. They take great pride in their accreditation as the official Rolex retailer in Bermuda and are the exclusive source for the most sought-after designers, including Fope, Roberto Coin, Marco Bicego, John Hardy, and Effy.

Across the street you will find E.R. Aubrey Jewellers, who specialise in gold, diamonds, tanzanite, morganite, and their exclusive Bermuda Triangle, Bermuda Lucky Stone, and Bermuda Ocean Mist collections.

Botanical Gardens. The TABS-Alshanté partnership is a natural pairing. Alshanté’s works are bold and bright, and many of the colours she chooses are represented

in TABS’s Bermuda shorts collection. Alshanté’s mural just outside the entrance to the Hamilton store includes the TABS Bermuda logo and makes for perfect selfie scenery.

“We want to give our customers that summer feeling when they walk through our doors and to take away a lasting impression of the vibrant colours both TABS and Bermuda are so famous for,” says TABS Bermuda owner and designer Rebecca Singleton. “We are excited to be working with Alshanté, as her art helps to embody the feelings we want people to take away with them.”

TABS Bermuda is known for showcasing and collaborating with local artists, whose creations shine brightly on men’s ties, swim shorts, women’s shorts, kids’ swim trunks, blankets, beach towels, and much more.

“I love creating art that evokes positive emotions, something that makes you feel happy and livens up your day,” says Alshanté. “This mural, like the TABS Bermuda brand, uses bright colours that will put people in a happy mood and encourage them to feel lively and free.”

In 2019, BMA issued the first of its flower series coins, the Bermudiana, depicting Bermuda’s national flower. In 2020, the Easter lily coin was released; and this is based off a deep-rooted history in Bermuda. They released the Hibiscus coin in 2021 and the Oleander coin in 2022. During 2023 the BMA has released the Bird of Paradise coin, the fifth coin of its flower series. The Authority is the regulator of the island’s financial services sector and the Bermuda Stock Exchange. It also has the responsibility for issuing Bermuda’s national currency and commemorative coin products.

Her watercolours have been exhibited in Bermuda and overseas, whilst collected and commissioned internationally. Jo’s paintings reflect her love of life and Bermuda. Introducing the 2023 Bird of Paradise Coin

Strelitzia reginae, most commonly known as the Bird of Paradise, is a singularly stunning flower that has graced Bermuda’s shores for over 150 years.

These year-round bloomers have an appearance that is said to resemble a brightly coloured bird in flight or caught indulging in floral nectar. Widely grown in its native South Africa, the Bird of Paradise has often spread its plumage in warm, humid climates like Bermuda. It currently puts on a vibrant display decorating our Hamilton City sidewalks, hideaways and exotic home gardens.

The plant was introduced to Britain in 1773, first grown at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, but has since been embraced worldwide, including Australia and the Americas, growing well in any lush or subtropical area. In his 1884 Botany of Bermuda, Governor Lefroy wrote that Strelitzia reginae was ‘to be found in many gardens’, although the exact date it was first imported to Bermuda is unknown. It has continued to thrive on the island throughout all four seasons due to slight variations between summer and winter.

Adored for its watercolour-like presentation, it is understandable why the Bird of Paradise is so popular as an ornamental plant and why this regal inflorescence is chosen as a muse for many Bermudian homes, artists and designers. The Bird of Paradise can be found in a magnificent exhibition at the Bermuda Botanical Gardens and will captivate even the most unsuspecting passerby anywhere in its proximity.

 AFTER A DAY IN THE SUN BURNING CALORIES, THERE’S NO BETTER REMEDY THAN A LITTLE SELF-CARE AND PAMPERING.

CARING FOR YOUR SKIN

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN DURING A FUN DAY IN THE SUN.

THE WEATHER IN BERMUDA is lovely throughout the year, making it easy to maximise time outside. But it’s important to protect yourself from the elements. Without proper protection and preparation, you’ll be more susceptible to sun and wind burns, which can take the fun out of any vacation.

Here are some skin-care tips to keep in mind during your visit.

Nourish and Protect Your Skin

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above at least 20 minutes before sun exposure to allow the sunscreen to absorb and take effect. It’s important to remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after a swim.

Don’t forget about your face and lips! Though we all long for that sun-kissed glow, it shouldn’t come at the cost of our skin. Use a broad-spectrum lip balm to protect your lips and keep them moisturised throughout the day. After a day of sun-filled fun, you’ll want to replenish and nourish your skin. Be sure to cleanse, moisturise, and use an aloe gel to soothe sunburns or overexposed skin.

Dress For the Sun

Minimising UV exposure is the best way to protect your skin from the sun. Choosing appropriate clothing is crucial, especially if you’ll be spending the day outdoors.

Loose-fitting cotton and UV-protective clothes can allow you to spend more time in the sun without getting

sunburned. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears, and neck. If you prefer a smaller hat or a baseball cap, use extra sunscreen on areas it doesn’t cover.

Finally, invest in a good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes and help prevent wrinkles from squinting in the sun.

Be Sun Smart

Whenever you’re outside in the sun, you must drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. It’s best to avoid direct sun exposure during peak sun hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. And don’t be fooled by the clouds! Just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean it can’t see you. When in doubt, check the UV index before heading out.

Protect Your Skin and the Environment

Not all sunscreens are made equal! Some are better for the environment than others. For example, avoid using sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene, as these chemicals can harm humans and marine life, especially coral.

Instead, opt for mineralonly sunscreens containing zinc dioxide and/or titanium dioxide. Other ingredients you want to be wary of when choosing a sunscreen include phthalates, sodium laureth sulfate, fragrance, and parabens. Be sure to take the time to read through the ingredients, as marketing labels such as “Reef Safe” or “Mineral Sunscreen” can sometimes be misleading.
