A horse ride through valley leads to golf ball competition the epiphany

Usain Bolt had this to say after he won a few more gold medals at the Olympics a few weeks ago. We found this quote in the newspaper I purchased before boarding the train in Pittsburgh to continue our journey to Lancaster, Pa.

Our group of six Hoosiers chews on this unusual quote for a bit. It sounds like something companion Calvin Miller would say in jest. I assume Mr. Bolt was serious.

After enjoying the weekend with our Pennsylvania hosts and making the three-hour drive to Nittany Valley of Pennsylvania, 16 of us, Pennsylvanians and Hoosiers alike, select horses and begin our two-day trail ride.

The trail slopes upward to the base of the mountain, where we begin to climb in earnest. It is a beautiful day and a nice, wooded trail for a ride. It switches back and forth, climbing up the mountain.

When we reach the top we ride eastward along the crest. Torpedo, the Dutch cross horse I’m riding, is doing well. Sam Schmucker’s Appaloosa is not. Once, she balks at following the others, kicks a few times and generally exhibits a sour attitude. Calvin says she ought to be run over. Calvin is not afraid of expressing his opinion. Many of us agree with him though, by the time this trip is over.

We stop at an opening along the crest where power lines come through. Here we enjoy a view of the valley we left a few hours ago. Those with experience say the view is better yet at our destination to the north east.

The trail winds east and north down this mountain and up the other. Eventually, we spot the trailer loaded with our camping supplies that someone trucked up here for us. Yes, we cheated.

We do still have a steep, quarter-mile, winding climb to the campsite that no truck and trailer will climb. But, oh, the view when we get there.

The campsite is at a lookout point bare of trees on the crest of the mountain. The ground drops away, steep and rocky, in front of us. Way below us, the valley spreads out to the west. We can see farms scattered out and the winding, silver road connecting them. The dark green of tree lines adds trim to the pattern. Gorgeous handiwork of God.

Now begins the chore of hauling our camping gear up the mountain from the trailer to the campsite. Up and down the trail we go, many of us hauling the gear on our horses, until we are sufficiently equipped – we think – at the top of the mountain.

The horses’ “stable” is between the trailer and our campsite. We scatter our steeds out, tying them to trees, giving them water as well as hay and grain. They’ve earned it.

Somehow, the Appaloosa ends up tied right beside the trail where she manages to sneak a kick or two at the horses going past. Where is the concrete truck when you need one?

Those who knew about the almost sheer drop off into the valley away from our perch on the mountaintop have come prepares. They brought dozens of golf balls, along with a few clubs.

A well-hit ball is a sight to behold as it soars out over the valley before dropping in Iowa somewhere. We content ourselves for a bit by just watching the balls, soon though, as boys will, we turn into a competition and begin timing the flight of our drives.

Calvin soon owns the lead with the time of 10.7 seconds. We call it a world record. It is, as far as we know.

Soon after taking the lead, Calvin retires to play a card game while others continue launching golf balls into the atmosphere, challenging him. When asked why he doesn’t attempt to improve his time, Calvin replies in true Calvin fashion, “I came here to become a legend. Now I am a legend. I have no more goals.”

Indeed.

Mr. Bolt, I admit, you can trot right along, but have you ever flown a golf ball for 10.7 seconds?

Wearing blankets on your horses can be a big benefit in the correct situations, but also may cause discomfort in some situations.

There is so much to choose from. First, pick your outer material, like 600, 1000, and 1200 Denier, RipStop, Polyester, Cordura, etc. Next, your liner, like quilted, felt, fleece, windbreaker and more. And now to decide between rugs, or fitted blankets to turnouts, stable, fly, frost, waterproof, water-repellent, breathable, shoulder gassets, tail flaps, double belly straps, snap or buckle front closures, etc.

So how do you decide what you need for your situation?

Ask yourself the following questions:

• Am I turning them out after workouts, or am I stalling after workouts?

• Can my horse exercise after blanketing?

• Can they get out the wind and rain?
