Gather ‘round for the Tall Tales of Windy Willy The womenfolk pause from their chore of washing the supper dishes here at the neighborhood ice cream social. Hands are quickly wiped on towels or aprons and the ladies hurry to the living room where the men are already leaning forward in their chairs with gleams of anticipation in their eyes. The children cease their noisy clatter and turn to see what has the adults so enthralled. They too, are soon caught up in the tale. Windy Willy is telling another story.

This fantastic tale is met with hearty guffaws and a few rolling eyes from an appreciative audience. Willy’s neighbor and dear friend, Benny Mast, who is used to these tall tales, slyly remarked, “Yeah, Willy, is everyone was like you, the skid loader companies would go out go of business in a hurry.” “They sure would, and the wood splitter companies, too.” Windy Willy is unruffled by his neighbor’s sarcasm. “Did I ever tell you what happened a few weeks ago when I was in the woods splitting firewood?” “No, do tell,” chuckles Benny, settling in for another round of entertainment. Windy Willy is a local legend. His far-fetched stories are often repeated over campfires and at other social gatherings. These tales are passed down from father to son, but unlike other stories, these do not become exaggerated. They already are stretched to the max. The stories some right off the press like that. While truth is hard to find in Windy Willy’s tales, entertainment abounds.

But now, it is time for fresh material straight from Windy Willy himself. The audience collectively resists the urge to rub their hands together as Willy begins the wood splitting story. The wrinkles on Windy Willy’s face and the heavy gray in his hair betray his age. However, there is a youthful gleam in Windy Willy’s eyes makes one forget the fact that Willy is well past middle age. “Yep, I was splitting firewood, and got good and warmed up. Thw chips were flying pretty good, and my ax kept getting too hot to keep using. I was prepared for this though, and had an extra ax that I used while I laid the first one in the ditch to cool off. “I kept splitting through the forenoon in this manner, switching axes, always keeping one ax in the water to cool while I used the other one. I didn’t think much of this as it’s not that unusual for me. I guess I didn’t really realize just how fast I was going ‘til I stopped and went to the house for lunch. My eyes just about popped out of my head when I saw what the neighbors were doing.” Here, Windy Willy paused for dramatic effect. He is a polished story teller. “They were butchering hogs. Now do you remember that I had been cooling my ax in the ditch? Those neighbors had been scalding their hogs in the very same ditch!”

Loren Beachy is an auctioneer and real estate broker with Bright Star Realty and Auctions in Middlebury. He was formerly an elementary school teacher at a local parochial school teacher for eight years. Some of his stories were written a few years ago while teaching. He enjoys fast horses, hot peppers, and strong coffee.

I was a little slow in the morning ‘til I had all the stiffness out of my joints, but I tell you, once I warmed up, I really made that shovel fly. Why, once I’d get done spreading one load on the field, I’d have another loaded and back to the field so fast I had to wait to start spreading it ‘til all the manure from the first load had hit the ground.”

Many is the time when a toiling farmer will pause in his work, wipe the sweat from his brow, and say with a twinkle in his eye, “You know, this reminds me of a Windy Willy story …”
