The Epiphany Madness in Mudville with the ‘Mighty Casey’ up to bat

It is the year-end ball game at the school picnic. The “game of games” is under way – fathers of the school vs. the scholars and the teachers. Ten full-grown men are taking on 11 elementary students and us two teachers. This much-awaited day began a bit ominously, with heavy rain in the morning. The sun did shine earlier this afternoon but not enough to dry out the ball diamond. By this evening, it is a muddy, slippery, sodden mess. The soggy conditions are not enough, though, to stop this highly-anticipated match up. The evening’s program has been completed and the eighthgraders graduated with due ceremony. The picnic and bystanders are spread out behind home plate. Now the ball game is on. We take the field first. These youngsters are as charged as thoroughbreds behind the starting gate and I dare say we teachers are a bit fired up, too.

My competitive juices do overflow in our half of the first inning, as I am overaggressive on the base paths. I am caught and tagged out between second and third. In the process, I slip on the spongy grass and splash to the ground, thereby soaking my bottom side. The seventhgrade base runner ahead of me scampers home to score though, and we lead by one. All is not in vain. The men quickly jump into the lead with two runs in the top of the second however, and the see-saw battle is on. Back and forth through the game we go, becoming muddier by sudden spurts, neither team able to obtain a big lead over the other. The scholars are playing solid defense for the soggy conditions and we are stringing together enough rallies on offense to poke our noses in the lead occasionally. In one highlight, my light-hitting sister and coteacher Emily smacks one into left field. Hard. The balls sails over the trampoline-sized puddle beside the foul line and over speedy left-fielder Menno Lehman’s head. Then from the gladdened multitude, there rises a joyous yell. Emily has an extra base hit. The next time Emily comes up to bat, Menno makes a great show of retreating farther into the outfield. We approach the end. Into the seventh and last inning we go. A two-run lead is our scanty cushion.

And here comes the next batter, now approaching the plate, now dropping his extra bat and waving the remaining one like a toothpick in his meaty hands – “Mighty Casey” himself. Lavern Lehman is up to bat. A collective shudder runs through the defense. This man is famous locally for his prodigious drives. Softballs are known to rocket off his bat and become tiny in the distance. Lavern Lehman, the man, is friendly and easy to get along with. Lavern Lehman, the hitter, is to be feared. As the pitcher, it is my job to keep him off balance. Lavern is too experienced a ball player to be easily tricked though, and he knows I can ill afford to walk him and force home the tying run. I’ll have to pitch to him. Eventually, I do. Lavern selects one he likes and swings with that fluid, powerful stroke. He smashes it high and deep into left center field. It is not, however, one of Lavern’s best shots. He didn’t get it all. The outfield was playing deep and a seventh grader has time to move under it and make the catch. Mighty Casey has flown out. The outfielder squeezes the ball for a moment then flings it into the air in jubilation. Happy cries erupt from every corner of the field and the scholars have difficultly suppressing the wide grins on their faces as we high-five the men. Breakfast Pizza Crust: 2 c. flour 2 T. sugar 1/4 tsp. salt

1 T. baking powder 1/4 cream of tartar 1/2 c. butter, softened 1 to 1 1/2 c. milk

Sauce: 4 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 1/2 c. Ranch dressing

1 Can cream of mushroom soup

Toppings: 3 c. prepared Tater Tots, chopped 6 eggs, scrambled 1 lb. sausage, browned and drained

1/2 lb. bacon, cooked and crumbled 1/2 c. peppers, chopped 1/4 c. onions, chopped 2 c. shredded cheddar cheese Anything you wish to add

Crust: Mix together dry ingredients. Cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in enough milk to make a soft dough. Pat onto greased 10x15-inch cookie sheet. Bake at 400° for 8 minutes. Sauce: Cream together cream cheese, Ranch dressing and soup. Spread over crust. Put Tater Tots, eggs, sausage, bacon, peppers, onions on top. Bake an additional 15 minutes, or until hot. 5 lbs. hamburger, browned 2 pt. pizza sauce 2 tsp. taco seasoning 2 qt. pork and beans 1 head lettuce, shredded 4 tomatoes, chopped 4 peppers, chopped

1 pt. onions 4 c. shredded cheese 2 bags taco chips, crushed 3 cans cream of mushroom soup 3 cans milk 3 (16-oz) ctn. sour cream Ranch dressing and salsa

Mix hamburger, taco seasoning and pizza sauce; heat in oven. Put pork and beans, uncovered, in oven. Mix mushroom soup, sour cream and milk. Heat in oven at 200°. Make stacks, starting with hamburger, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, onions, cheese and chips. Cover with sour cream sauce, Ranch dressing and salsa. Serves 25 people. 1/3 c. brown sugar

Cook together for 3 minutes. Put on cookie sheet to cool, then crumble up. Filling: 3 c. milk 3/4 c. brown sugar 6 T. flour

3 egg yolks 1 1/2 T. butter 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
