The band of cousins around him, some from Montana, some from Ohio, are not so sure. “It’s further than you think, Brad,” one cautions. “And don’t forget, the air gets thinner as we go up, plus we’ll all be wearing packs. This is no walk in the park.”

“Is your load getting lighter now that we’re drinking Gatorade?” one boy inquires. “Actually,” Brad huffs, “I can’t really say that it is.”

“Don’t worry,” Bradley says, in a sarcastically soft tone. “If you fellows get too tired, I’ll wear your pack as well as mine. Maybe I’ll even take Grandpa’s wheel chair along, so I can push you over the rough places.”

The farther they hike, the more poor Brad’s shoulders slump under the strain. His face is grim and his breath labored. Finally, he can stand it no more. He sprawls onto the nearest rock and demands a break.

Bragging Brad is a stocky 22-year-old of average height, average athletic ability, but tremendous enthusiasm. When his boundless energy is not bent to a specific task, it often bursts out in spirited bantering. Over the years he has honed his arguing skills to an art and he knows the easiest way to get a lively verbal contest started is by making terrific boasts. Immediately his almost equally competitive comrades will begin disputing his abilities and the brouhaha is on – which is exactly what he wants.

“A break!” one young man protests. “We can’t make it to the top in 2 ½ hours if we’re taking breaks all the time!” Brad ignores him and opens his pack for a drink. He freezes at the unexpected sight of a dozen fist-sized stones sitting on top of the Gatorade. He glances at his comrades who have suddenly discovered urgent business elsewhere. The pranksters are soon ducking for cover as the rocks rain down upon them from the hand of Bragging Bradley. He is not amused.

The morning of the hike dawns clear and unseasonably warm. The well-prepared hiker lads put a few more Gatorades in the packs.

Feeling that it would be best to confess everything right away, one of his comrades mercifully tells Brad he may want to check the bottom of his pack too before he continues. The soccer-ball-sized rock is soon produced. Brad snatches up his pack, now much lighter, and stalks off, his snickering companions not far behind.

One lad disappears for several moments and returns with a sly grin on his face, lugging a soccer-ball size rock that has been recruited from a nearby flowerbed. He glances around and whispers conspiratorially, “Why don’t we put this rock in Brad’s pack and see if he still thinks he can hike the mountain in 2 ½ hours?” The cumbersome rock is placed at the bottom of the pack filled with Gatorade. The boys make sure the rock is completely covered with bottles. Then along comes Bragging Brad himself, fairly bouncing with excitement and raring to conquer Murder Mountain. Quickly putting an innocent expression on his face, one young man hands Brad the inconspicuous pack containing the drinks. “Here’s a nice and light one for you to carry,” he says graciously. “We don’t want to have to push you along in Grandpa’s wheelchair.” Brad just smiles in a superior sort of way and lets the comment pass. He grabs the pack that his friend hands to him and slings it onto his back. The others watched out of the corners of their eyes and made a gallant effort not to laugh ad he staggers backward a few steps. His eyes bug out slightly. “Something the matter?” one boy asks, a concerned look on his face. “Of course not!” he snaps, forcing a smile. The boys begin the trek up Murder Mountain. To his credit,

The hike is safely completed and it is not until several months later that Bradley can see any humor in the joke. One of the boys, seeing the souvenir quality of the notorious rocks, lugs it back down the mountain. A few years later, on Bradley’s wedding day, all the jokesters sign and give it to him as a present. While opening gifts from the guests after the wedding feast, Bradley’s new bride discovers his infamous stone, of which she knows nothing of. A small smile begins to tug at Brad’s mouth. “Well, you see, Honey,” he says, putting his hand on her shoulder, “we went on a hiking trip once, and the other Bontrager boys were afraid they couldn’t keep up…”
