The Epiphany Lengthy Phone Messages Frustrate Hurried Caller voice message. Because now, I need to listen to my own messages.

Quickly I punch in the numbers, the voice in my head chanting, “Hurry, hurry, hurry.”

Tip, tap, tappity, tap. I pound in the pass code, press pound a few more times and here comes the first message. I am wishing it’ll be short.

In my earpiece I hear one slow ring. Pause.

The driver is still out there waiting. I hammer in my own number. Here I know all the shortcuts to get right to the meat and potatoes, my four new voice messages.

“Heyyy Loren, you can guess who this is.” Oh, I sure can.

Ring. Pause. (Hurry, hurry, hurry.) Ring.

“I just thought I’d come out here to the phone and leave you a message.” That is nice. You thought it. Then you did it. At least we know you’re not operating in some kind of trance.

Pause.

“It is such a nice day today. It’s almost 80 degrees and the sun is shining.”

Ring. Pause. (I’m almost dancing with frustration.) Finally a voice mail greeting. A drawl. “You have reached Five, seven, four, eight, two, five …”

“For John Doe, press one. For Bill Doe, press two …” Friend, why don’t you just start with that? Is there any reason you need to take time to parrot back to me the number I have just dialed?

My trigger finger has been itching to hit the delete button for a while when the fellow finally gets around to what he wants. He has no idea how high my blood pressure is now and how very unreceptive I am to what he is asking me just because he took me around the bush with him twice before cutting to it. Deep breath. Deep breath.

“For James Doe, press three.”

Deep breath.

Hastily, I punch three, then the pound key to cut through the usual pause. I hear the crunch of tires on the driveway. Now I have my driver waiting and I haven’t left the first message yet.

I make a note of what he wants. I’ll call him back later, I bolt out of the phone shack. The other message will have to wait. My driver has been waiting long enough.

“Hi. This is James Doe. Sorry I can’t some to the phone right now. Please leave your name, number and a message with your reason for calling and I’ll try to get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you for calling and have a nice day.” Oh James, the first sentence would have been sufficient. Did you imagine someone would call you that doesn’t know all the rest and hasn’t heard it 864 times? And as for the end of your sermon, I’ll have any kind of day I want to, thank you kindly. Beep. Finally it’s my turn to talk. “James, Loren here. Yes, your plan will work for me. Thank you.” No need to be wordy. James knows exactly what I mean. I will say, it is much easier to overlook these seemingly unnecessary delays when I’m not in such a rush. I cause them myself sometimes too. But when I’m crunched for time, it sure makes me painfully aware of how much faster this whole process could be. Please folks, let’s consider that the next time we record our greeting or send a

Now the disclaimer. This piece will step on a few toes; it has already trod on my own. And perhaps if the hemming and hawing makes me this uptight, then I was stretched a bit tight to begin with. I want to keep in mind, though, the value of other folks’ time when sending or receiving messages. With a bit of thought, many sentiments can be pared down quite a bit. Remember, concision is bliss. May we leave messages as we would like to receive them.
