Step Up and Keep on Swinging - No Matter What the epiphany

Wisecrack Wanda is in a slump. Her customary screaming line drives have given way to weak foul balls and often strikeouts. Wanda’s usual happy chatter while perched on first or second has changed to an irate grumbling as she makes her way back to the bench after striking out. Wanda is perplexed and frustrated. After all, she’s in the eighth grade. She should have this figured out by now.

Now the pressure level rises. Tumbling Creek School comes strolling across the schoolyard. They are on their round of school visiting and have happened to arrive here at Sunrise Valley School at recess time.

This provides an excellent opportunity for a friendly ball game – Tumbling Creek vs. Sunrise Valley.

The excitement level rises on the playground as positions are quickly decided upon. The home team, Sunrise Valley, soon takes the field and Tumbling Creek sends up their first batter.

Through all the excitement, Wisecrack Wanda feels an apprehension growing in her stomach. These spring ball games between schools are much anticipated and this should be one of the highlights of her eighth-grade year. With this slump though, Wanda feels as likely to strike out as get a solid hit should she happen to bat in a clutch situation.

A three-inning game is decided upon to allow Tumbling Creek to stay on their school-visiting schedule and to allow Sunrise Valley sufficient time to do their schoolwork after the ball game.

Tumbling Creek quickly gets on the board by scoring a few runs in the top od the first inning. They add a few more in the second and really pour it on in their half of the third, making the score 9-1 in Tumbling Creek’s favor. Further damage was averted by Wisecrack Wanda’s classmate, Towering Tommy Miller, who angled over from his position as first base to catch a high foul ball hit by a Tumbling Creek school parent also joining in the ball game.

Sunrise Valley scratched out their lone run in the bottom of the second when Chipper Chester turned on the jets and steamed from first to home on a blooping single by a sixthgrade girl.

But now, in the bottom of the third and last inning, Sunrise Valley finds itself down eight runs. The outlook isn’t brilliant.

Further darkening any hopes of a late rally, sixth -grader Hustling Harriet lines out gently while leading off the bottom of the third.

After that, however, business begins to pick up. Another sixthgrade girl, not known for her heavy hitting, sneaks a grounder past the shortstop to earn a spot on first base.

The next hitter, one of Sunrise Valley’s teachers, knocks one into the outfield that slips under the glove of Tumbling Creek’s center fielder. When the ball is retrieved and the throw comes in, the batter is streaking from third base to home. Tumbling Creek’s shortstop fires a strike to the catcher who applies the tag just as Sunrise Valley’s runner steps onto home plate. The umpire, another Tumbling Creek parent, shows excellent sportsmanship and pronounces the runner safe.

The gap is now six and Sunrise Valley is loosening up. The bench begins to holler and cheer.

A series of well-played grounders and solid base hits scores a few more runs, ratchets the excitement level up and loads the bases with two outs., Noe the score stands 9 to 5 and the tying run comes up to bat in the form of none other than Wisecrack Wanda.

This is exactly the type of situation Wanda normally would have relished. Today though, she dreads it. She has not smacked a solid hit in what seems like ages. To her it seems a distinct probability that she will let her team down.

With typical abruptness, she chides herself as she steps to the plate. “C’mon Wanda! Keep on swinging. Hit the ball. Hit it hard. You’ve done it before.”

After letting only one pitch go past for a ball, Wanda finds one she likes.

Showing not a trace of timidity, Wisecrack Wanda hacks at the ball. Her slender frame uncoils like a spring as she swings the bat with all her might. This time, she hits it. She hits it well.

A fly ball rises toward left center field. Tumbling Creek’s outfielder in that position, an eighth-grade girl who is a capable athlete herself, makes haste in retreating. Sunrise Valley’s bench anticipates an extra base hit and begins to erupt. This could break the game wide open.

Running backwards and reaching up, though, the lass makes the catch. The comeback is not to be.

Recess is over now and after high fives, everyone makes their way to the schoolhouse. After a brief visit, Tumbling Creek is on their way again with a victory to their credit.

Wisecrack Wanda and her mates at Sunrise Valley have something they will learn to appreciate more as the years go by though.

They have memories. Memories of excellent sportsmanship, of a team pulling together and of keeping on swinging, no matter what.
