The big picture There is no better month to get your walking gear on and explore the North Wales Coast. Not too hot, and not too cold, September still has some glorious days in which to get out and about. For many, this month marks the return to school for their children, meaning that many a lunch hour should be reclaimed for yourself – and some good old fashioned fresh air. Harlech beach offers some of the best views of the region and, at this time of year, you may even have it all to yourself. Take the footpath from Harlech Castle through the golf course and dunes before arriving at this magnificent stretch of sand‌

New hobbies

Do you find it difficult to answer the question: what are your hobbies? What better time than today to discover new exciting things to do in North Wales!

Learn to surf When you hear these words you could be forgiven for thinking about dragging your board to one of our glorious beaches and hoping that the waves roll in. In fact, the best place to learn to surf is at Surf Snowdonia – the world’s first inland surf lagoon – where guaranteed waves are served up against a backdrop of mountains and forests, all within a short drive from home. And, just in time for you to undertake your new hobby, Surf Snowdonia is running another one of its hugely popular surf camps this month. This three-day camp is ideal for you if you are a beginner surfer of if you would like to up your skills and make the transition to intermediate. It promises expert tuition, friendly folk and a real progress boost for your wave skills. It’s £250 for three days with all accommodation, equipment and tuition included. The course begins on 10th September. www.surfsnowdonia.com

Throw a pot Pottery has had something of a resurgence since Demi Moore got her hands dirty in Ghost. And, while we can’t promise a supernatural moment, pottery is known to be a very relaxing hobby indeed. Just be warned – it’s not as easy as it looks. Brookhouse Pottery in Denbigh has been hosting regular schools since 1980. The professional workshops are fully equipped and spacious and can accommodate eight students with ease. Owner David tutors the two-week course each day, which begins on a Monday morning and ends the following Friday at 5pm. A splendid four-course lunch is prepared each day at the Brookhouse Mill Restaurant down the lane, while tea, coffee and biscuits are served both mid morning and afternoon in the workshop. What other excuse do you need to get started? www.brookhousepottery.co.uk

Putt a hole in it Golf is sometimes perceived as a secret society, with its own culture and language, with words like Bogey, Birdie & Eagle, which can make it feel a little exclusionary. We’re here today to let you know that this is not the case. Golf is a relationship game and will present you with unbelievable personal and shared experiences with fellow players. The majority of course professionals offer lessons too, and they aren’t as expensive as you might think with many of them offering great packages for new members. So step outside, breathe in the fresh air and admire the beautiful golf courses here in North Wales.

Learn Welsh Whether you’re a beginner or already speak some Welsh, a range of Learn Welsh courses are available in communities across North Wales, during both the daytime and in the evenings. Courses are run by the National Centre for Learning Welsh and its local providers, Learn Welsh North West and Learn Welsh North East. A free 10-hour online course is also available, as part of the National Centre’s ‘Work Welsh’, a new programme to strengthen Welsh language skills in the workplace. The online course introduces greetings and everyday phrases and vocabulary. To get started, all you have to do is register. You can also follow residential Welsh courses at the beautiful Nant Gwrtheyrn centre on the Llŷn Peninsula. Pob lwc gyda dysgu Cymraeg! (Good luck with learning Welsh!). www.learnwelsh.cymru

Build your strength Strength is sensed as energy moving inward. It is the physical feeling of containing and sustaining power. Denbigh native, Tracey Miller, has trained to become a fitness instructor and introduce North Wales to this brand-new fitness technique called Nia. Nia is a blend of martial arts like Tai Chi, dance arts like jazz and modern and healing arts like the Alexander Technique. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every Nia experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think, and live.

Become a Master Chef Skip the ready meal aisle at the supermarket and head down the fresh food lane. It’s time to become the master of the kitchen and learn new cooking techniques! Whether you’re a complete beginner, a budding Chef or an enthusiastic foodie, Bodnant Food’s state of the art cookery school hosts a wide range of inspiring courses suited to all abilities. Out of term time, you’ll also find courses especially for children throughout the year. Not only will your experience be hands-on, but you’ll also learn a series of useful tips and recipe recommendations, from Bodnant’s food and wine specialists, and top Welsh chefs. Bring your partner, family, friends or sign up by yourself, Bodnant promises a memorable culinary experience. www.bodnant-welshfood.co.uk

Get gardening Become at one with nature without having to leave home! Gardening is one of the best gentle forms of exercise that you can have, and it comes with the added benefit of being able to do it as and when you please. The more hours you put in then the more rewards you will reap – you will either have a beautiful oasis in which to relax on sunny days, or an abundance of fresh, seasonal (and organic) fruit and vegetables – depending on what exactly you choose to grow. Of course, many gardeners prefer the best of both by having a flower garden and a vegetable patch which to enjoy. North Wales has many wonderful garden centres that are simply full of inspiration and great advice on how to get started. www.snowdonianurseries.co.uk

Snap a pic Do you enjoy capturing the moment with your camera? Are you a regular filter user? What if we told you, that there is a way that your shots could be even better with a little help, so you’re not spending all your time editing?! Why not learn from a professional, take part in a photography workshop and visit beautiful parts of North Wales? Let us introduce you to Simon Kitchin, an awardwinning landscape photographer from North Wales and author of Photographing North Wales. Simon offers a wonderful Snowdonia photography workshop where you can spend a day surrounded by the stunning scenery of Cwm Idwal in the Snowdonia National Park with the chance to photograph the dramatic views of the Glyderau and Carneddau mountain ranges, the glacial lakes of Llyn Idwal and Llyn Ogwen and the impressive Ogwen Falls. You’ll learn how to make the most of your camera controls, how and when to use filters and how to improve

If you are unsure as to which hobby suits you best, then maybe take the plunge by offering your spare time to a good cause. There are many charities out there who are always looking for volunteers – St David’s Hospice for example needs help in its charity shops, while the Samaritans are usually looking for people to help man the phones. Likewise, ask your local school if they need anybody to help the children with their reading. If these ideas sound like too much of a commitment then you can always put your fundraising hat on and bake a cake, hike a mountain or even throw yourself out of a plane in the name of a good cause…

Get a dog! Okay, so this obviously isn’t one of those hobbies that you can just plough into willy nilly but, if you have the time and resources, then getting a dog can be one of the most rewarding hobbies out there. As they say, a dog isn’t just for Christmas – in fact they can provide you with pleasure and companionship 24 hours a day. We bring our little dog to work with us here at North Wales Magazine HQ, and what we love the most is that she makes us take a good hour for lunch everyday in order to admire the beautiful beaches that North Wales has to offer – whatever the weather!

One of the pleasures I take in visiting smaller towns and villages in North Wales derives from the variety I see on the high street. Unlike cities and towns where small businesses have been beaten by the lowest common denominators of ‘cheap’ and ‘easy’, local businesses create colour and diversity. They’re owned by real people who know their customers personally – their likes, dislikes and values – and are in a position to offer individualised advice. The hostel has a book exchange, free wihi, plenty of games, laundry facilities, a drying room, and bicycle/canoe storage. It is situated in the perfect location for walking, climbing, canoeing and mountain biking in the Vale of Llangollen, and families will love visiting the steam railway, horse drawn canal boats and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. But there is more to a hostel than affordable accommodation – for some people it offers a way of life. A couple from London have quit the life of finance and fashion to relaunch the £1 million Snowdonia backpackers hostel which has been dubbed the UK’s poshest. Proud North Walian Christian Wynne gave up his financial services career in London along with his fashion designer wife Annie to buy the luxurious five-star Plas Curig hostel in Capel Curig. Nick Embrey discovers the story behind Clogau Gold – the hidden treasure of the Snowdonia hills.

ETo ‘strike gold’ is a phrase we’ve all used from time to time and very much a popular idiom of the English language, but few of us can claim to have ushered forth these words in their literal sense. Not so William Roberts, who in 1989 did just that when he stumbled upon a disused gold mine in the heart of Snowdonia. That chance discovery more than a quarter of a century ago gave rise to one of Wales’ most valued and recognised jewellery brands in Clogau, but it also shed light on a fascinating aspect of Welsh history that I knew very little about – its gold. Had William been walking the hills and valleys a century earlier, he would not have chanced upon a disused ruin, but a hive of activity. For one of the nation’s two gold belts runs straight through the region, from Barmouth via Dolgellau up into Snowdonia and, in the 1880s, would have been crawling with prospectors, all after a share of its 2000-year-old deposits. Not so today however, and the first thing to appreciate about Clogau is that the gold at the core of its business is rare, so rare in fact that Wales no longer has any working mines. That it is rare is hardly surprising either, when you consider the colourful imagery of one Welsh miner who suggested that “finding gold in most mines around the world is like finding

Feast your eyes There has got to be some advantages to summer slipping away. For Nick Embrey it’s the arrival of the regions food festivals…

autumn chill sets in. Once that job is done, the business of preserving will begin, a legion of sterilised Kilner jars pressed into action and ready to house a mountain of jams, pickles and chutneys. Some of this produce will go no

And as summer visitor numbers begin to thin along the nation’s beaches and campsites, the beautiful coastal town of Beaumaris will fire the starting pistol on our culinary quest for edible excellence with a weekend of food festivities that will be tough to follow. Commencing on September 1st, the pretty town overlooking the beautiful Snowdonia mountain range will come alive with the hustle and bustle of snack seekers and merry makers. Admission will cost £5 per adult

Performing solo, Gary ‘Ragsy’ Ryland is fast becoming a hugely popular recording artist in the region having been a finalist from 2018’s Song for Wales competition, and with a previous education as a trained chef, will be on familiar ground as he belts out a tune or two. “There is an abundance of amazing producers in Wales and we are rich in produce – that’s why I enjoy performing at food festivals,” he said. “It’s the first time I have been to Mold and I’m excited to be performing here and to meet the food producers, chefs, and exhibitors.” Again keeping music in the foreground, the Hawarden Estate will play host to ‘the Good Life experience,’ a beast of a weekend from 14th -16th September offering all the usual suspects of food, ale, music and crafts, only with a unique twist – as its name suggests, this extravaganza is part homage and part pilgrimage to the much vaunted good life of yesteryear. It is in part the brainchild of writer, musician and broadcaster Cerys Matthews of Catatonia fame and promises a dizzying array of contributors including authors and literary connections, food and cookery experts as well as crafts and the great outdoors. What makes Welsh cuisine so special? I love the history of Welsh food, it’s nostalgic. The Welsh Oggie, for instance, was a pasty made for miners. Myddelton College celebrates graduate successes Students at North Wales’ newest private school are celebrating the success of their first ever graduates with results coming in well above the Welsh national average. This year marks the very first batch of exam results for Denbigh’s Myddelton College, a non-academically selective school which opened its doors to local and international students in September 2016. Among the subjects securing a 100% pass rate A* - C were English literature, history, geography, further mathematics, chemistry and economics. “I am thrilled that after two years of hard work and dedication by students, parents and staff that we have produced our very first graduates who are heading off to make their impact on the world,” commented head teacher Mark Roberts. “They not only leave us with excellent grades but also with the attributes and characteristics that they need in order to thrive in the 21st Century.”

Dogs Welcome Scheme

A new Dogs Welcome Scheme has been launched in Conwy. Dogs Welcome stickers are now available for local businesses to display in their windows to let customers know that they are dog friendly. George Goode and Neil Fowler started the scheme and hope to expand into more areas. If you are a business who would like to take part, stickers are available through Llandudno Tourist Information Centre or Conwy Business Centre in Llandudno Junction.

Burmese Dancers Return to Portmeirion Portmeirion has announced that the Burmese Dancers have returned to the Central Piazza. The Burmese Dancers are a pair of statues carved from lacquered wood and gilded in gold leaf. They are associated with the 19th Century court arts of Mandalay, Burma, marked by flamboyant costume details. But how did two Burmese dancing statues find their way to an Italianate village on the coast of Snowdonia? It is a bit of a mystery as to how and when they arrived In North Wales, but whatever brought the statues to Portmeirion, they have come to be a much-loved feature of the Central Piazza. The statues were removed from their large stone columns in 2017, due to poor condition. In need

Getting personal Weddings are big business, with the average British wedding now reported to cost around £27,000. There are ways to cut on costs however, with many of them resulting in a more personal touch to boot…

Shelling out The likelihood is that, if you are from North Wales, that the beach will mean a lot to you. Instead of buying placecards, collect shells from your favourite beach and write the guests names on those instead…

Picture this Instead of spending a fortune on floral displays for the middle of the tables, why not make the centrepiece a bit more personal with pictures of yourselves? Frame images of you as a couple during every year of your relationship and stand them on each table – you can borrow frames from your own house, friends and family in order to keep the cost down.

The gift of talent Twice as nice Instead of a traditional wedding cake, order cupcakes as an alternative. Arrange them in a traditional tier, and cut one as usual for the photo opportunity. But instead of having a mountain of cake left at the end of the day, you can give a cupcake away as a wedding favour, therefore killing two birds with one stone.

Page 100 NWM 2018

Don’t ask for wedding gifts from you guests – instead ask them to contribute to your day. Have a talented photographer in the crowd? Ask them to take the pictures. Are you friends with a cake maker? Then get them to put their baking skills to the ultimate test. Does a family member have a posh car? Get them to drive you to the church. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask – most people would be thrilled to contribute to your special day.

Luke Edwards gets behind the wheel of the Isuzu D-Max and discovers that it offers the best of both worlds… With the hazy summer days coming to an end and the autumn winds and winter snow approaching, a decent 4x4 is a sensible choice – but what if you need a work and family solution? With the Isuzu D-Max range you have lots of options to choose from. The Isuzu advertisements have the strapline “It Just Works” which sums up the D-Max. I tested the Utility 4x4 Double Cab – which is perfect if you wish to use the D-Max as a family vehicle. The other cab configurations are Single Cab 4x2 & 4x4 (starting from £16,499) or Extended Cab. The D-Max model range begins with the Utility base model, but includes the Eiger, Yukon, Utah, Blade and a halo model in the AT35 (more about that later).

Hooray for Ivy

Ivy gets a bad name, and that’s unfair. Its success at climbing across trees and buildings leads some people wanting to remove it, but it’s not a parasite, and will only push into cement that is already damaged or a tree that has been weakened by disease or weather. Ivy is, however, one of the last flowers of summer, its clustered flowers providing a source of nectar for bees and bugs to fuel up before winter. Some insects will lay their eggs on ivy leaves or tuck themselves among its evergreen growth for the winter. And later, its deep purple berries are loved by blackbirds, thrushes and pigeons. In September, find some ivy on a sunny day and marvel at the hoverflies, wasps and ivy bees that are using it, the latter being a recent arrival in North Wales.

STARS...

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

September’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Beware of taking up an extreme health regime on the 9th. That’s when a confusing New Moon will cloud your judgement. If you want to revise your diet or increase physical activity, talk to a doctor. The Full Moon on the 25th will tempt you to enjoy some down time, but work won’t permit this. You’ll have to cancel plans to accommodate a demanding boss.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) A rival will take credit for your hard work in early September. Don’t let the deceptive New Moon on the 9th cause you to let down your guard. If you submit work, do it to several people via email. That way, people will know when it was submitted and who generated it. The Full Moon on the 25th will cause you to question a close partnership.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) The New Moon on the 9th will make you impulsive. Beware of rushing a romantic relationship. Diving head first into a commitment will be cause for serious regret. You’re dealing with someone who has a hidden side that is quite upsetting. On the 25th, the Full Moon will bring an embarrassing secret to light. You may discover someone has been cheating you out of a joint fund.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) On the 9th, you’ll meet some interesting people at a party or professional conference. It’s best to maintain an air of formality with these people in the early stages. One or two of the individuals you meet will have shady characters. The Full Moon on the 25th brings the end to a demanding work assignment. It will be such a relief to get this project off your desk.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) Finding a place to live will be challenging during the first half of September. You may feel pressured to sign a lease or make a deposit on the 9th, due to a deceptive New Moon. Do not move forward on this deal until you have the property inspected by someone that you hire. The Full Moon on the 25th will send shock waves through your social circle.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) The New Moon on the 9th marks a professional opportunity. Look before you leap. The terms of this deal are extremely murky. You might be told you can work from home, only to discover you’ll be expected to spend all your time in the corporate office. On the 25th, the Full Moon will bring some disappointing news. An emotional or financial gamble will backfire.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) The New Moon on the 9th will cause some wires to get crossed. If you’re giving a set of confusing instructions, ask for clarification. Double check an address before entering it into your GPS. Before setting for an appointment, make sure it is the right date. On the 25th, the Full Moon will create stress on the professional front.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th) The terms of a legal deal will be extremely unfair. It may be necessary to hire a lawyer to protect your interests. Even then, the New Moon on the 9th will make it difficult to get justice. It may be best to settle and walk away from an exhausting fight. The Full Moon on the 25th creates drama on the home front.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) A moneymaking offer on the 9th will not be all it is cracked up to be. That’s when a deceptive New Moon will tempt you into taking a seemingly cushy job. Once you accept this position, you’ll be dismayed to learn you have been duped. The Full Moon on the 25th will make it hard for you to spread your wings and fly. You may fail a test or fall short of graduation requirements.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) An intimate relationship gets off to a rocky start in early September. The New Moon on the 9th causes people to be distrustful, elusive and deceptive. If you catch someone near and dear to you in a lie, it’s a red flag. On the 25th, the Full Moon brings upsetting information to light. Decisions will be taken affecting your world of work.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Your self-confidence will be undermined by a confusing New Moon on the 9th. No matter how clearly you try to communicate your points, the audience will fail to understand them. Don’t get upset. Take deep breaths and try another approach. On the 25th, the Full Moon will create a rift in a close relationship.

Page 114 NWM 2018

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) A close relationship will show signs of strain on or around the 9th. That’s when a deceptive New Moon will cause you to jump to conclusions about your best friend, romantic partner or business associate. The Full Moon on the 25th brings a finan cial disappointment. Payment for work will be much less than you expected.
