DEAR READER

Well, welcome to 2025! While I hope that you all had an absolutely fabulous festive season, now is the time for fresh beginnings. I won’t harp on about New Year’s resolutions but, like everyone I expect, January is the perfect time to think about those things in your life that could do with some improvement.

Health and wellbeing is always at the top of the list. One of the best ways to improve your health – for both your body and your mind – is, of course, by doing yoga. We have got some fabulous classes and retreats on page 45, so have a look and consider whether this could be the start of something great this year.

Eating better is also something to think about now that all of the Quality Street has been polished off! We have a jam packed (pun intended!) food and drink section for you starting on page 49 that includes great recipes you can recreate at home for both food and a mocktail… Who says dry January has to be boring on the taste buds?!

The other thing that people tend to start thinking about in the New Year is moving house. If a house full of guests made you start dreaming about a bigger abode then fear not, because there are some great properties currently on the market – just turn to page 60 to see what I mean.

Whatever you have planned for 2025 I hope it is happy, healthy and prosperous for you all.

We want to hear from you!

The Chirk Viaduct (Traphont y Waun in Welsh) is a Grade II* listed railway viaduct over the River Ceiriog. The viaduct carries the Shrewsbury–Chester line from Chirk in historic Denbighshire from the north to the English village of Chirk Bank in Weston Rhyn, Shropshire, to the south. To the east, the Chirk Aqueduct lies parallel to the railway viaduct. The viaduct, which was designed by Scottish engineer Henry Robertson, was erected between 1846 and 1848 – and then rebuilt in 1858. The 100 feet high stone structure has ten spans with round arches, and it stands some 30 feet above the adjoining aqueduct.

NEW POSSIBILITIES

Volunteer this New Year with National Trust Cymru

Volunteering with National Trust Cymru offers a valuable opportunity to engage with Wales’s rich heritage while contributing to its preservation and care. Across the historic houses, gardens, countryside and coastal areas cared for by the Trust, volunteers play a vital role in looking after these cherished landscapes, conserving natural and cultural heritage, and supporting visitor engagement.

Volunteering is more than just giving your time; it’s a chance to learn, grow, and make lifelong connections. You’ll help ensure these iconic places continue to inspire and delight for generations to come. Whether in a historic house, a picturesque garden, or amidst Wales’s spectacular landscapes, your contribution will leave a lasting legacy. Whether you’re passionate about storytelling, conservation or working with people, there’s a role for everyone at a variety of unique places in North Wales:

Erddig Hall and Garden, Wrexham

Erddig Hall and Garden in Wrexham is one of Wales’s most evocative historic houses, where volunteers bring the stories to life as House Experience Volunteers. This role invites you to share the fascinating tales of the Yorke family and the servants who helped shape the estate. Engaging with visitors, you’ll help them connect with the unique history and heritage of this remarkable home, where every room and object tells a story.

Plas Newydd House and Garden, Anglesey

With its breathtaking views across the Menai Strait, volunteering at Plas Newydd offers opportunities for those with a love of gardens or history. As a Gardener Volunteer, you’ll work to maintain and enhance the estate’s beautiful grounds, ensuring this serene setting continues to inspire all who visit. For those who prefer sharing stories, the role of House Host

provides a chance to welcome visitors and introduce them to the history of Plas Newydd, including its connections to renowned artist Rex Whistler and its naval heritage.

Powis Castle and Garden, Welshpool

At Powis Castle, volunteers have a unique opportunity to combine history with hospitality. Food and Beverage Volunteers help ensure visitors enjoy exceptional service in the castle’s café, providing a warm and friendly atmosphere that complements the grandeur of the property. Meanwhile, House Experience Volunteers immerse themselves in the history of Powis, sharing the stories behind its iconic collections and helping visitors experience the enchantment of this historic site.

If you’re unsure which volunteering role suits you best and are looking for a new challenge to start the New Year, there are also opportunities available along Wales’s breathtaking coastline or in its picturesque countryside. Whether you are passionate about wildlife conservation, maintaining walking trails, or helping visitors connect with nature, there are plenty of ways to get involved. From protecting delicate ecosystems to supporting outdoor events, your efforts will help preserve these stunning landscapes for generations to come.

Make this the year you embrace a new challenge! Discover how you can get involved and make a difference: nationaltrust.org.uk/volunteering

The joy of joining an amateur theatre group

In a world where many of us find ourselves caught up in the grind of daily routines, there is a surprising remedy that can not only break the monotony but also offer benefits to our social lives, mental well-being and self-confidence. Simone Baldwin believes that that remedy is joining an amateur theatre group…

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or someone who has never stepped foot on a stage, becoming part of a local theatre community can open doors to personal growth, connection, and fun in ways you might not expect.

Early Beginnings

Theatre goes as far back as Ancient Greece, where public festivals included performances that were integral to religious and civic life. In Ancient Rome, while professional actors dominated the stage, amateur groups occasionally performed as part of civic or religious celebrations. Today, amateur theatre groups exist all around the world, offering a space for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in the arts.

Like much of the UK, North Wales has long been home to a thriving amateur theatre scene which spans centuries. The early societies often formed as a means for rural communities to enjoy performances they otherwise might not have had access to. The groups also played an important role in bringing people together, preserving traditions, and providing a platform for creative expression. The local church halls and community centres became key venues for the first amateur performances which ranged from adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays to locally written dramas and comedies in both English and Welsh. Nowadays our local groups

perform in a range of venues and events, from schools and church halls to local theatres, hotels and open spaces. To quote William Shakespeare “All the world’s a stage”.

In Wales, the Eisteddfod festivals of literature, music, and performance encourage a huge range of participants, including Welsh learners. The Eisteddfod competitions are exciting cultural events held across Wales promoting performances in Welsh.

So why do we do it?

The first and perhaps most obvious benefit of joining an amateur theatre group is the social enjoyment that comes with being part of a tight-knit group. Theatre is all about collaboration and creativity, and when you join a group of like-minded individuals, you quickly form bonds that transcend mere acquaintanceship. Whether you’re working together to bring a play to life or simply enjoying behindthe-scenes camaraderie, the shared goal fosters a sense of belonging that is hard to find in other social circles.

For many, theatre groups become a second family, where connections are built on mutual respect, shared passions, and the excitement of creating something meaningful together. The rehearsals, post-show celebrations, and even the challenges along the way all contribute to a sense of

joy that can’t easily be replicated in other settings. If you’re looking for a fun, supportive group of people who are passionate about storytelling and the arts, amateur theatre is the place to be.

In many amateur theatre groups, you’ll find people who share your enthusiasm for creativity, as well as those who bring new ideas, skills, and perspectives. This diversity of experiences can enrich your life in ways you never expected, offering you the chance to learn about different cultures, hobbies, and worldviews. And, because theatre often involves collaborative work on productions, you’ll find that these connections naturally evolve into lasting friendships.

Performing on stage – whether in front of a small group of friends or a packed audience –requires courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to take risks. For many, the act of getting up on stage for the first time is both thrilling and terrifying. But overcoming that initial fear can be incredibly empowering.

As you continue to rehearse and perform, you’ll find that you become more comfortable with both your abilities and yourself. Being part of the crew requires team-work. Or maybe your skills lie in the design team for costumes, hair, make-up, set design, sound or lighting? The skills you build in an amateur theatre group such as speaking in public, presenting yourself assertively, and working within a team are valuable in many aspects of life, from professional settings to personal relationships.

Whether you’re looking to make new friends, relieve stress, build self-confidence, or simply enjoy a fun and fulfilling hobby, theatre provides a rich and rewarding experience. Whatever your skills, there are a range of roles within groups both on and off stage. Most amateur theatre groups have a website or Facebook page with details on how to get in touch. You never know what magic awaits when you join an amateur theatre group. n

The park also holds Bronze Age burial mounds and ancient standing stones, adding a layer of intrigue to its scenic trails. Loggerheads Country Park, another nearby gem, features serene woodlands, nature trails, and a historic corn mill.

Mold’s lively town centre is a haven for independent shops, cosy cafés, and inviting pubs. Whether you’re seeking a hearty meal, a unique gift, or a friendly chat over coffee, Mold’s local businesses provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere, especially at this time of the year. The culinary offerings here are diverse, with options ranging from traditional Welsh fare to contemporary cuisine, ensuring that every palate is catered for.

Mold What to do in

Create a special memory book

Since moving within walking distance to Mold town centre 30 years ago, Liz has worked as an interior designer and helped with dementia and bereavement groups. Sharing skills with others has always been a passion. Eight years ago owing to health issues, Liz looked for crafts that were available to all levels of ability and dexterity. Metal tape art and scrap booking fit that need perfectly. Adhesive metal tape is laid over various objects (leaves and card cutouts), and stroked with a flat piece of plastic. Outline definition is increased with pointed tools and then buffed with fine sandpaper and coloured with alcohol based marker pens. Another technique is to copy a simple shape, pressing the image through the paper into the tape. These techniques are easy to learn and kind to hand joints. The traditional art of scrap booking is very recycling friendly and again, the basics are easy to pick up . The books can be made completely from scratch or based on a good quality hard backed kraft paper book. Using traditional paper folding techniques, an enduring unique record of any special day can be created for you. A laced combination of writing and storage space created to match your theme or idea. Courses in either technique can be booked online or by email, local group enquiries welcome. https://magpiefairycrafts.co.uk

Have a night out

It’s an exciting time for Mold as Theatr Clwyd is undergoing redevelopment. While still remaining open to the public for some fabulous shows and performances, there is a lot going on behind the scenes – and the brand new and improved Theatr Clwyd is expected to be completed this year. And now you can make a complete night of it and enjoy a super meal before the show too, as Bryn Williams at Theatr Clwyd has been designed to fit perfectly into the newly refurbished building. Set on the first floor overlooking the stunning Clwydian range, this modern bistro is where French cooking meets Welsh ingredients. The light filled space, with its informal dining atmosphere, will be using the very best local ingredients – with meat and vegetables taking centre stage. It is accessible throughout the day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even though you can, there is no need to book a matinee or evening at the theatre to come and enjoy the delights of the restaurant or terrace. www.theatrclwyd.com

Rick Lee, owner of The Gathering said: “We are well established in Mold and really appreciate all the support we receive from our customers. Our partnership with Mold Golf Club is an exciting new venture and we really hit the ground running with not only looking after golfers, but also catering for funerals, birthdays and a whole range of other functions. The venue holds up to 120 people comfortably with the dining area overlooking the first three holes of the course. It is a stunning location and the perfect space for any event, from a business meeting to a wedding. We have served around 500 Christmas meals in December for a range of groups and they were really well received. We are looking to developing our offer in the New Year to encourage new customers to drop in.”

SHINING BRIGHT

Amelia Scott, a jewellery brand inspired by a love of colour, individuality and vintage sparkle is set to arrive in Flintshire, and will be stocked at the Mococo store in Mold.

The London-based brand is beloved by fashion editor’s and has been worn by the likes of Katie Piper and Ashley James. It was also the recipient of the Retail Jeweller ‘Best Emerging Jewellery Brand of Year Award’ earlier this year. It’s success lies in encouraging its community to celebrate individuality and embrace the wonderful world of colour – and how to wear it well. The brand has become a go-to for wearable, unexpected palettes and sophisticated sparkle.

The standout collection features the brand’s well-known luna moon and star earrings, bow design earrings, rings and necklaces, and (new for this season) a range of emerald and blush pink bee themed pieces. Perfect for gifting a loved one, or as a treat for yourself.

Entry price points start at £59 for jewellery, exiting at £159 for more intricate, ornate pieces – which are mostly made from 925 recycled sterling silver and embellished with colourful cubic zirconia.

“It’s wonderful to see Amelia Scott go into such amazing stockists around the UK,” said Jane Hebden, founder of Amelia Scott. “Securing Mococo was a big win for us, it has such a great name and is an important part of the high street at all its locations. We’re proud to be stocked alongside such other great brands and are very excited to see where this will take us.”

Uninspired by the minimalist brands on the market, Jane decided to use her ten years of industry experience to start designing pieces that reflect her own personal style and the fun she loves to have with accessories and colour. Even the sumptuous velvet packaging is standout in its own right –designed to excite the customer as much as what’s inside, making Amelia Scott perfect for gifting. n

The Amelia Scott collection is available at Mold’s Mococo store now: Earl Buildings, 3, Earl Rd, Mold, CH7 1AN. Please visit www.mococo.co.uk for more information

Rydal Penrhos celebrates milestone first term on one site

Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay has entered 2025 celebrating the outstanding success of its first term as a unified, single-site school. In September 2024, the coeducational independent school, which educates pupils aged 2 to 18, completed a once-in-a-generation project to bring all pupils together on one campus. This transformation included major infrastructure upgrades, highlighted by the creation of a brand-new Prep and Pre-School. The first term in this enhanced setting has seen pupils adapt swiftly and embrace exciting new opportunities. Prep pupils enjoy access to exceptional new facilities, including high quality science laboratories and a dedicated music studio with five purpose-designed classrooms. The project’s success follows the summer’s outstanding exam results, which saw Rydal Penrhos pupils achieve the top GCSE grades at more than four times the UK and Welsh national averages. Building on this success, the school remains committed to ongoing investment. In collaboration with Hockey Wales and Sport Wales, Rydal Penrhos recently unveiled plans for a community hockey club in North Wales, complete with a new, state-of-the-art astro-turf pitch. rydalpenrhos.com

St David’s goes the extra mile

Forget ordinary – St David’s College takes education to the next level. Since 1965, this independent co-educational day and boarding school for students aged 9 to 19 has been crafting a learning experience as unique as its students. Here, traditional academics meet exciting opportunities in outdoor education, performing arts, music, design, technology and more. It’s a space where students can explore their passions and uncover hidden talents. Sport plays a central role in the St David’s experience. By joining sports teams or participating in international competitions, all pupils are encouraged to pursue their athletic dreams. To ensure success on and off the field, teachers offer personalised study plans, encouraging pupils to excel academically while nurturing their skills. Leading the way is a former Wales rugby international PE

teacher who knows the pressure that such high achievement brings. Their team’s expertise, combined with the Sport Department’s philosophy to train the mind as well as the body, evolves students into confident athletes.

Central to the St. David’s experience is a holistic approach to education, one that values every learner’s potential. RUTHIN REJUVENATION IS A LABOUR OF LOVE

Ruthin businessman wants to put picturesque Welsh market town back on the map…

A Ruthin-raised developer says love and loyalty are behind an ambitious drive to breathe new life into the picturesque Welsh market town.

Mike Hall has bought and renovated a number of properties in the Denbighshire town over the past ten years including bars, restaurants, luxury Airbnbs and homes for local people to rent.

The 50-year-old father-of-two, who moved to Ruthin as a baby with his pub landlord parents, grew up in the town and returned to live there after university and qualifying as a chartered accountant. In 2006 he formed his own successful building company, G Parry Home Improvements Ltd, with a business partner before buying him out to go it alone.

Over the last few years he has used profits from his building firm to invest in a wide range of residential and commercial buildings, including several key sites around Ruthin’s central St Peter’s Square.

And he says his vision is to make Ruthin a place where people will want to remain, settle or visit – with the ultimate goal to be part of the town’s regeneration, providing an attractive range of venues and facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy rather than travelling to nearby towns and cities like Chester, Liverpool and Manchester, an offer which will appeal to foodies and tourists from across the country and beyond.

Fine dining venue No.11 Ruthin opened earlier this year. Located in a landmark pink Grade II listed townhouse in the heart of St Peter’s Square it offers delicious modern British cuisine utilising locally sourced produce and accompanied by a curated selection of wines, beers and handcrafted cocktails in its cool, calm and relaxed atmosphere.

And Caffe Grande, which is also in St Peter’s Square, serves perfect roasted coffee, a wide range of speciality teas and cold drinks, together with delicious sweet and savoury treats. There are also irresistible pupachinos for four-legged visitors.

This autumn they were joined by Jacques Wine Bar, just off the main square in nearby Upper Clwyd Street. The venue serves

an exquisite selection of wines by the glass and bottle to sip and savour, paired with an accompanying menu of food to graze on while soaking up the relaxed, backstreet Parisien vibe.

There are further plans for more eating and entertainment venues in the town centre in the future. They include an American diner-style restaurant to cater to teenagers and young adults.

In addition to these beautiful renovations of commercial properties, Mike has been busy renovating a number of stunning and high-spec holiday rental properties, all let through Airbnb and all local to the town centre itself.

“I want to make Ruthin great again. It’s as simple as that,” explains Mike. “I want Ruthin to be put back on the map, and for there to be a reason for people to come here and enjoy our beautiful town. It’s about loyalty, it’s about trust, it’s about the feeling I have in my heart for somewhere that was good to me. I love living in Ruthin and I want to make it a better place for my kids so they and their friends will want to stay and build their lives here, rather than leaving for the cities because there is nothing here for them or their families.

“We also need to attract more people to come and spend their time in Ruthin, and when they do come, we need to provide things for them to do and places for them to go, we need to keep them coming back so the town can prosper for many years to come. I’m just trying to do my little bit.” n

Putting Bangor First

Bangor BID is a funded partnership that has the best interests of this vibrant City at its heart…

BID Bangor (Business Improvement District), also referred to as Bangor First, is a business-led and funded partnership, where businesses within a defined area invest money together to make the improvements they identify for their trading environment. A BID is formed following consultation and a ballot in which businesses vote on a BID proposal or business plan for the area. If a ballot is successful, it is then managed and operated by a BID Company – a non-profit company run by and for its members – and is funded through the BID levy, which is a small percentage of a business’s rateable value. Bangor Bid is run by directors who come together and discuss what people are wanting on the high street and what can be done by them.

Over the past nine years that Bangor First have been here they have achieved many things that has impacted the city in a positive way. The first being forming relationships with other local groups and stakeholders to create a closer link with these organisations working to improve the city. Another achievement made by Bangor First is working with the police and offering additional seasonal security when needed, they have worked to reduce the antisocial behaviour on the high street. Smart Towns Wales is a way for organisations to see data of Bangor City such as the age range of people visiting and what areas need improvements. Bangor First use the data provided by Smart towns Wales to identify parts of the city that need improvements.

The aim of Bangor First is to bring footfall to Bangor and to support businesses in the city. They run a regular business competition which is used to raise the profiles of the best, hardworking businesses in the city.

Bangor first has contributed to a wide variety of events and projects over the last few years to increase footfall and improve the opinions of the City. A project called transforming towns was created and, along with other organisations, Bangor First contributed to this project, this included putting up hanging baskets, vinyls on the empty shop windows, weekly high street clean up, new flower planters, guttering and much more. Last year, by people’s request, they also put money towards making Bangor tidier.

Bangor First have done their own events too such as an Easter egg hunt last Easter, as well as a dinosaur trail in June 2024 – each having a brilliant turn out bringing footfall into Bangor. As well as putting on their own events they have contributed money to the summer festival which takes place every year as well as the Christmas Cracker, and the displaying of Christmas lights Christmas lights and decorations which will be displayed from Caernarfon road to the High Street.

Even more events have been planned for 2025 by Bangor First to celebrate Bangor turning 1500. n

Stone Circle Mead supplies Senedd and

National Trust

Stone Circle Mead, a Wrexham-based business that focus on simplicity and purity, has announced that it is now supplying both the Senedd and the National Trust. Many of their flavours are inspired by the natural elements on offer in Wales, including foraged ingredients that make Stone Circle Mead‘s products totally entwined with the land it comes from. This is an intoxicating prospect (as mead usually is) – a synergy between skilled mead-makers and the natural world, coming together to create beautiful flavours. Each bottle of Stone Circle Mead seems intently focused on simplicity, and the honest expression of natural taste. This concept is championed first and foremost by the bottles – weighty, minimalistic, and adorned with some proper wax seals. Cocktail of the month

The Shirley Temple

As January rolls in, many of us are ready to embrace a fresh start. After the indulgence of the festive season, Dry January has become the perfect opportunity to reset and enjoy life’s simpler pleasures – without the buzz. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on one of the most iconic non-alcoholic drinks: The Shirley Temple.

This delightful mocktail is as timeless as it is charming. Named after the legendary child star of the 1930s, the Shirley Temple was reportedly created to give young Shirley something special to sip on while mingling with the adults. The drink is said to have originated at a Hollywood restaurant, where a bartender whipped up the now-famous concoction for her. While Shirley herself later admitted she wasn’t a fan of the sweet beverage, the drink has endured as a symbol of fun and nostalgia.

The classic Shirley Temple is as simple as it is cheerful: a blend of ginger ale, a splash of grenadine, a squeeze of lime and a bright red maraschino cherry on top. The combination is sweet, fizzy and visually stunning – a drink that practically shouts celebration, even if there’s no alcohol involved.

For those embracing Dry January, the Shirley Temple is a perfect choice. It proves that you don’t need spirits to have a spirited drink! Plus, it’s versatile. You can make it lighter with soda water or swap grenadine for apple juice for a more natural sweetness. Want to make it extra special? Add a dash of fresh orange juice for a citrusy kick. It’s a mocktail that’s easy to customise and sure to please everyone, from kids to adults.

The Shirley Temple isn’t just a drink; it’s a nostalgic nod to simpler times. Its bright, joyful look makes it the perfect pickme-up during the winter months. Whether you’re hosting a Dry January get-together or just looking for something special to sip on, this classic mocktail fits the bill.

So, as we embrace a healthier start to the year, why not raise a glass of bubbly (alcohol-free, of course) to the Shirley Temple? Sweet, fizzy, and full of charm, it’s a drink that proves January can be just as celebratory as December. Pair it with a hearty winter meal or enjoy it as a midday refresher. However you serve it, the Shirley Temple is sure to brighten your day – and your Dry January. n

NO-LOW

After the indulgence of Christmas festivities, January is a good opportunity to take stock and rein in the levels of alcohol for a few weeks. The quality of ‘no-low’ drinks has rocketed in the last few years, and there is much more choice too. I’ve picked a wine and a beer that will get you through Dry January without making it feel like too much of a chore. There are a couple of lower alcohol wines here too, that have a touch of sweetness to them, as that lovely sugar hasn’t been turned to alcohol. They make great food partners.

However, I don’t subscribe to complete abstinence in January, it’s a great month for cooking rich, beefy stews and roast chicken traybakes. So, there are a pair of wines that will match beautifully with these.

Torres Natureo Alcohol Free Muscat, Penedès, Spain 2022 £8.50

Fruity and aromatic, with a grapey, appley finish, this is my favourite non-alcoholic wine at the moment. Perfect with Asian flavours, fish or chicken. 0% abv.

Brooklyn Special Effects Lager

£1.40

A hoppy lager at 0.4% that is incredibly refreshing. Sweet and malty up front, then the bitterness kicks in from dry hopped Mosaic, Citra and Amarillo hops. You really aren’t missing out on anything with this!

Brachetto d’Acqui, “Braida”, Piedmont, Italy 2023 £15.20

This is pure cherryade in a glass! Sweetly fizzy with just a touch of fresh cherry acidity to balance it all out. This is magical with a plate of Parma ham or charcuterie, where the sweet, salty character of the meat works well. Only 5.5% abv too!

LOWER ALCOHOL

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, Kerpen, Mosel, Germany 2022

£14.90

I love German wines, especially from the Mosel. Off dry, with zippy acidity and crisp green apple flavours, this is ideal with anything spicy. It comes in at 8%, so you don’t have to worry too much if you have a second glass!

WINTER WARMERS

Tanners Chilean Chardonnay, Colchagua Valley, Chile 2023

£10.50

I love to make a traybake with chicken thighs on top of a pile of roast veg this time of year, and this Chilean Chardonnay, with good weight and luscious tropical fruit notes, is the perfect match.pork or any mushroom dishes, don’t be scared to try it!

Côtes du Rhône Les Bergeronnettes, Domaine La Collière 2022

This is a long-term favourite of mine! Juicy, soft and full bodied with good complexity and lovely freshness. I love drinking this with a slow cooked beef stew on a Sunday afternoon after a cold, blustery walk with the family. A proper winter warmer!

Food for thought

SCRAMBLED EGGS À LA JAMES BOND Ingredients (serves 4)

12 fresh eggs Salt and

Break the eggs into a bowl, season well and beat thoroughly with a fork. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, ideally copper, melt 100g of the butter. When melted, pour in the eggs and cook over a very low heat, whisking continuously.

Well that’s Christmas over for another year. There’s still a bit more festivity to wring out of early January, and I’ll be spending these first few days of 2025 indulging in one of the great yuletide traditions of my household – watching James Bond films.

I can still remember Christmas 1982, when the only thing anyone in school could talk about was that Moonraker was going to be on ITV on Boxing Day. I still remember my excitement at discovering that parts of From Russia With Love were filmed in North Wales, and that Bond #4, Timothy Dalton was a Colwyn Bay man.

And for the removal of doubt, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the best Bond movie of all, IS a Christmas film. So there.

I’ve recently been listening to, and at one point appearing on a podcast called The James Bond Book Club, which looked at Ian Fleming’s novels, as opposed to the films. I was genuinely fascinated by the way Bond ages across the books, gets darker and more beaten. The difference between the books and the films is marked. Moonraker the novel for example takes place almost entirely in Kent (and Jaws doesn’t fall out of a plane without a parachute).

One theme that threads itself across all the Bond books is 007’s love of scrambled eggs. You never see this in the films – though Roger Moore does cook up an excellent quiche in A View To A Kill – but if there’s ever a spare moment, literary Bond will use it to get scrambling.

Ian Fleming actually included Bond’s scrambled eggs recipe in ‘007 In New York’ – which proves that simplicity is the key. A perfect first breakfast for the New Year…

While the eggs are slightly more moist (Fleming’s word, not mine) than you would prefer, take the pan off the heat and whisk in the rest of the butter, sprinkling in some finely chopped chives.

Serve on hot buttered toast with pink champagne (Fleming recommends Taittinger. I had to make do with Prosecco) and, as he puts it, ‘low music.’ n

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

FIVE MINUTES WITH EMMA DEERING, NEWLY-APPOINTED PARTNER AT LANYON BOWDLER

“Exciting, interesting and challenging” – that’s how Emma Deering describes her job at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Conwy.

Emma is one of four new partners at the firm, which has offices across Shropshire as well as its base in North Wales, and here she describes how she helps people as a solicitor – along with explaining what she loves about living and working in the area.

How would you describe your job?

I am a private client lawyer, specialising in wills and probate, inheritance tax and Lasting Powers of Attorney (known as LPAs). The three words I would use to describe my job are: exciting, interesting and challenging. No two days are the same because we help people in a wide range of ways.

I enjoy regular contact with our clients, getting to know them and their families and supporting them through difficult times, often during bereavement, by dealing with the administration or coming up with solutions for inheritance tax and succession planning.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in law?

There is more than one way to qualify as a lawyer – explore your options and take the route that works for you. I didn’t qualify as a lawyer the traditional way through university. I qualified through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx), which meant I could gain my qualifications as I worked, rather than being in full time education.

What’s your favourite thing about living and working in North Wales?

Working so close to home, I’m on hand for my two children, but at the same time the caseload I deal with is akin to what I would expect if I worked in a city firm in, say, Chester. I enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the countryside and the beach.

How do you relax away from work?

I’m not sure I do, having two young children who keep me very busy, but I get to the gym whenever I can and

I’m partial to the odd glass of Prosecco!

Where is your favourite place to visit in North Wales?

Probably the mountain behind where we used to live in Penrhynside. We spent a lot of time walking that mountain and having picnics during the pandemic – the children now call it ‘Sandwich Mountain’.

What are your favourite events that take place in North Wales?

There are lots to choose from, but I would say my personal favourite has to be the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, which is always a fantastic day out. n

More than a School

January marks the season of fresh starts; a time for resolutions and plans for positive change. For families reflecting on their children’s futures, few decisions are as transformative as choosing a school that builds confidence, unlocks potential, and nurtures happiness. For over 140 years, Rydal Penrhos School, located in Colwyn Bay, has done exactly that.

As a leader in educational excellence in North Wales, Rydal Penrhos blends proven academic success with outstanding pastoral care and a wealth of enriching opportunities. Whether families seek improved academic outcomes, greater engagement in sports and extracurricular activities, or simply a happier school experience, Rydal Penrhos delivers. Pupils thrive in the classroom and beyond, becoming the very best version of themselves.

The possibility of joining Rydal Penrhos is available to all families, thanks to the school’s fee assistance opportunities. As a Methodist school and registered charity, Rydal Penrhos is dedicated to making its exceptional education accessible to children from all backgrounds, regardless of financial circumstances.

There are three types of scholarship award available to prospective pupils:

J Fully Funded Places: Each year, Rydal Penrhos offers Fully Funded Places to talented local pupils. These places are awarded based on school reports, a Cognitive Ability Test, and an interview with a senior staff member. Eligibility is means-tested, determined through an external financial assessment.

J Scholarship Premiums: For pupils who excel in academics, sports, drama, music, or art. Scholarship Premiums provide an annual reward to the pupil that they can use to support their pursuits.

J Bursaries: Pupils awarded an Academic Scholarship Premium may also qualify for a Bursary if their family’s combined income is below £60,000. Bursaries, determined through the same financial assessments as Fully Funded Places, are offered on a sliding scale. This ensures that children who might qualify for a Fully Funded Place based on their academic abilities, but do not meet the financial criteria, can still access Rydal Penrhos.

Families interested in Fully Funded Places or Bursaries must attend Assessment Day on Saturday 25th January 2025. On this day, pupils will sit a Cognitive Ability Test and meet with a senior staff member for an interview. This event, hosted annually by the school, is a powerful opportunity to access the benefits of a world-class education.

This New Year, take the first step towards transforming your child’s future. With the exceptional education available at Rydal Penrhos School, you are making a choice that will shape their success for years to come. n

To register for Assessment Day, contact the Admissions Department at admissions@rydalpenrhos.com, or call 01492 530155. The school’s friendly and experienced team will be delighted to answer your questions.

Seashore detectives

At a time of year when we’re all looking for a fresh start, beachcombing is certainly a winter activity to be recommended!

The strandline, the line of debris left by the high tide and stormy seas, is a great place to look for ‘wild treasures’; close inspection reveals several different types of seaweeds and kelps on which you’ll often find the tiny worm casts of spiral worms.

A root around in the strandline may reveal egg cases, affectionately known as Mermaid’s Purses, providing evidence of the presence of sharks, skates and rays in our waters. Whilst the egg cases of bull huss and the lesser spotted catshark, more commonly known as dogfish, have curly tendrils on each corner, skates and rays have horns. One of the most common finds is the egg masses of whelks; interestingly, the first few eggs to hatch eat their sibling eggs! With their spiral-shaped shells, whelks are some of the most well-known seashells however a huge range can be found. Set yourself the challenge of counting as many different types as possible – you’ll be surprised at how many you come across!

Be part of the solution to plastic pollution

Plastic pollution on our coastlines and in our seas poses a significant threat to marine wildlife. Animals such as seals and seabirds can become entangled in fishing line or trapped in plastic six-pack rings and Frisbees. Also, smaller pieces of plastic often enter the food chain as accidental fish food.

With extreme weather bringing more frequent and severe storms, our winter beach strandlines can be filled with countless pieces of plastic amongst the seaweed. By removing this plastic before it re-enters the sea, we can be part of the solution to plastic pollution.

What better way to beat the January blues than wrapping up against the elements and heading outside to take some positive action to help wildlife? Visit North Wales Wildlife Trust’s website to find a local beach clean near you. n

North Wales’

King of Crime

Bestselling author Simon McCleave talks to North Wales Magazine about his new series and how Snowdonia continues to inspire him…

Simon McCleave has been called ‘one of the best crime writers in the country’. He spent two decades working in London’s film and television industry writing scripts for some of the UK’s most iconic dramas including Silent Witness, The Bill and Midsomer Murders. But it was a move to North Wales that really set Simon’s creative juices flowing – its mysterious beauty, seemed like an ideal location for a thriller, and inspired a series that has gone on to sell millions of copies.

“Snowdonia is stunning, truly one of the most beautiful places on earth,” enthuses Simon. “It has everything you could want in a geographical area – stunning mountains, vast lakes, sweeping countryside, disused mines and caves, deserted beaches – it struck me almost from the first as a perfect setting for a crime series.”

Now, with three million copies of his bestselling thrillers sold worldwide and a television adaptation in the offing, Simon McCleave returns to his ‘muse’ Snowdonia for a brand-new crime series, Marshal of Snowdonia, which is published in early 2025. The cast is slightly older than his previous novels, but you’ll find all the pace and grittiness you’d expect in a McCleave thriller.

“Frank’s an ex-detective,” Simon explains when asked about his new series character. “Retired from the North Wales Police and now working as a ranger in a remote corner of Snowdonia, where he lives with his wife Rachel and his dog Jack.

“So Frank’s still catching the bad guys, but these days it’s usually poachers rather than gangsters, and he creaks a bit more when he’s chasing them down,” he says, smiling.

“But he’s also dealing with tougher stuff,” he adds. “The kind of issues you start facing when you’re older. Frank’s wife has early-stage Alzheimer’s, he worries about his daughter with her feckless boyfriend, who lives with his grandson a bit too far away. He’s a family-man. Protective, loyal… the kind of man you turn to in a crisis.”

That’s why when an old friend’s sister disappears, she automatically calls Frank, desperate for his help. But then things get much darker…

“You’ll have to read the book to find out what grim secrets they start to uncover,” Simon adds mysteriously. n n

Marshal of Snowdonia by Simon McCleave is published on 20 February, eBook £3.99 and paperback £9.99.

Understanding Keratoconus

Keratoconus is an eye condition that affects the shape of the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of your eye. Normally, the cornea is round and smooth, helping to focus light onto the retina for clear vision. In keratoconus, the cornea becomes thinner and bulges outward into a cone shape. This irregular shape distorts vision, causing blurriness, glare, or sensitivity to light. The exact cause of keratoconus isn’t fully understood, but it’s thought to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors. It often begins in the teenage years or early adulthood and may worsen over time. Some people may notice a rapid progression, while others experience gradual changes. Symptoms include blurry vision that doesn’t improve with glasses, frequent changes in prescription, or double vision in one eye. Early diagnosis is important, as treatment options can help manage the condition. Mild cases may be corrected with special contact lenses or glasses, while more advanced cases might require procedures like corneal cross-linking to strengthen the cornea or, in severe cases, a corneal transplant. If you experience persistent vision issues, consult an eye doctor. Early intervention can help preserve your vision and improve your quality of life. www.northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

Emma Deering, of Lanyon Bowdler, which has offices in Conwy and provides legal support for clients all over North Wales, said the 4NorthWales events were always enjoyable. “Expanding contacts is an important part of building a business, and we wanted to make networking fun and less daunting, which is what these events are all about,” she said. “We are delighted to have seen numbers steadily grow over the last couple of years and we are expecting a good turn-out at our first event of 2025. We are very grateful to Number 8 for inviting us to their recently opened cocktail and dessert bar in the beautiful seaside village of Deganwy. Every 4NorthWales event is free to attend, but we would advise registering as soon as possible to reserve a place as spaces are limited.” To reserve a place, visit https://bit.ly/4NWFeb2025 or email holleigh.mcclay@lblaw.co.uk

The Buckley Society publishes war memorial

The Buckley Society has just published “The Buckley War Memorial at Hawkesbury –Biographies of the Fallen from The First World War. With Abbreviated Biographies from The Second World War and Later Conflicts.” Compiled by Peter Kelsall, this book presents biographies to commemorate 202 men and one woman whose names are inscribed on the Hawkesbury Memorial in Buckley, Flintshire (139 from WW1, 62 from WW2 and two from later conflicts). For the WW1 casualties, each biography is limited to one page for reasons of equality (just as the same simple headstone is used for all Commonwealth War Graves Commission graves). They have included photographs of the men and graves where available, or at least a photograph of the cemetery where they were laid to rest or the memorial where they are commemorated. Abbreviated biographies are provided for WW2 and later names which to date have not been researched to the same degree. bucksoc23@gmail.com

Horse owners advised prevention is better than cure

Horse owners are urged to be proactive and to take a ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach to equine health this New Year.

The message comes from Arwain DGC (Defnydd Gwrthficrobaidd Cyfrifol / Responsible Antimicrobial Use) - a Welsh Government funded programme that helps vets, farmers, and horse owners in Wales reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by promoting animal health, training, new technology, data gathering, and research.

AMR is classed as a ‘One Health’ challenge, threatening the health of humans and animals.

At an Arwain DGC webinar for horse owners, vet Katy Groves of South Wales Equine Vets, said with horse health ‘prevention is better than cure’.

Proactive steps include creating an optimum environment, and carrying out routine work like dentistry, worming and farriery. Also good biosecurity and appropriate medical management.

Katy said, “Many common things I see could be improved by, or, in some cases, prevented by a small change in management. For example, some respiratory cases where ventilation in the stable environment could be increased, or more robust fly control measures playing a role in reducing the chance of an eye (corneal) ulcer. Another issue is horse compliance for dosing of medications, where notifying the vet of the problem sooner rather than later results in a better outcome and reduced use of antibiotics.”

Meanwhile, horse owners in North Wales have been advised to be on alert after several cases of high small redworm burden were reported in the area.

Small redworms, or cyathostomins, are the most common worms found in horses and ponies in Wales. If left untreated, they can cause severe illness and even death.

Vet Patrick Scott of Milfeddygon Dolgellau Cyf is urging owners to get their horses tested for small redworm. If treated early, the animal is less likely to require hospitalisation and antimicrobials.

Patrick said, “Small redworms reside in the horse or pony’s large intestine. Adult worms lay eggs, which are passed on to the faeces. The eggs hatch on the pasture and develop into larval stages, passing back into the horse or pony as they graze. During the life cycle, the larva burrows into the gut lining, where they re-emerge as adults, and the life cycle starts again.

“However, during autumn and winter months, these larvae will hibernate in the gut instead of developing into adults – a process known as encysted red worms/encysted cyathostomins.”

A horse with a high adult worm count may have weight loss, a dull coat, and soft faeces. It can be confirmed by faecal egg counting, but at this stage, small redworms can only be detected through a blood sample.

This allows target worming using the correct product, at the right time of year to the horse that requires it. It’s no longer acceptable to randomly blanket treat horses/ponies for worms. A more thorough and accurate approach improves health and welfare and helps to reduce the occurrence of anthelmintic resistance -a growing problem.

Patrick said, “The encysted stages of redworms are much more dangerous when in higher numbers when compared to a high adult worm count. An ‘en-masse’ emergence of larvae can lead to severe watery diarrhoea, weight loss, colic, and colitis/ endotoxaemia, with up to 50 % mortality.

“Therefore, a routine blood sample at this time of year is vital to establish a worm burden level and ensure good health.”

Katy Hurley of Arwain DGC, added: “We echo these messages and encourage horse owners to be pro-active in all aspects of their horse’s health.

“Prevention is always better than cure, so speak to your vet to discuss the right testing for your horses and how to keep them in top condition.” n

Choosing the perfect soundtrack to say goodbye

Music has the unique power to express emotions that words cannot. I rarely am without music playing, whether in the car or cooking dinner and it provides the soundtrack to my life.

Within a funeral, music connects us in moments of shared grief. Whether through a traditional hymn, a classical piece or a modern song, music has the ability to create a meaningful and memorable tribute to the person that has died.

Why music matters at funerals

Music can set the tone for the funeral, creating an atmosphere that reflects the personality of the person that has died. It can bring comfort and tears or evoke memories of happier times, helping mourners to feel connected during moments of reflection. Choosing the right piece of music can make the service personal and heartfelt.

Popular choices for funeral music

There are no rules when it comes to selecting funeral music.

J Traditional Hymns: “Abide with Me”, “Calon Lan” or “Amazing Grace” are timeless and deeply moving pieces of music;

J Classical: Instrumentals such as Elgar’s “Nimrod” or Beethoven’s “Fleur De Lis” can offer a calming backdrop; J Modern Songs: Contemporary tracks, such as Eva Cassidy “Over the Rainbow” or something from a favourite artist such as Tom Petty or Metallica can help to evoke personal memories and celebrate individuality.

J Cultural Music: Music from specific traditions or ethnic backgrounds can honour a heritage.

Making it unique

Personalising a funeral through the music choices is a wonderful way to honour their legacy. Think about their favourite songs, artists and genres. Did they love a particular era of music? Were there special songs that marked special milestones in their life?

Some of my favourite moments have been where we played a song specific to someone, so a theme from a favourite film or a track from an artist that isn’t heard often as this is truly individual.

Live performances can also add a special touch, whether it’s a family member playing the guitar or a professional singer performing a much-loved song.

Music for different moments

Funerals typically have some key moments where music plays an important role. Here are some ideas:

J Entrance Music: Set the tone for the service with something serene or reflective, such as “Time to Say Goodbye” by Andrea Bocelli or “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.

J Time for Reflection: Use soft instrumentals or songs with sentimental lyrics to accompany moments of silence or following the eulogy.

J Exit Music: Many families choose uplifting songs like Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” or Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” to send off their relative with positivity and joy.

Music is more than just a background element at funerals, it’s an expression of love and celebration. If you’d like support in selecting or arranging music for a funeral, please get in touch with our team to discuss how we can create a beautiful and personalised farewell. n
