What’s On

BIG the picture

While stunningly beautiful at any time of year, Eryri comes into its own in winter thanks to sparkling lakes and glittering mountain tops. Eryri is home to all of the mountains in Wales that are over 3,000 feet high, including the country’s highest, Yr Wyddfa, which is 3,560 ft tall. In English of course Yr Wyddfa is named Snowdon – which, in old English literally means ‘snow hill’ – leading us to believe that this famous mountain gained its name during these colder months of the year…

Step out on a crisp winter walk in North Wales with National Trust Cymru

Soak up the beauty of frosted landscapes, crisp air, and breathtaking views on an invigorating winter walk at some of the most spectacular places in the region.

Wrap up warm to explore historic gardens, pull on your boots to jump over puddles in parklands, or blow away the cobwebs on a clifftop walk along the rugged Welsh coast. Put a spring in your step during the colder months with these top winter walking trails in North Wales.

Bodnant Garden, Conwy: Winter Garden Trail

Explore a winter wonderland of colour, texture and scent on a gentle, half a mile circular route around the Winter Garden. The flat, level and accessible route is suitable for the whole family to enjoy. This Grade I listed historic garden celebrated it’s 150th anniversary this year and it is 75 years since Bodnant Garden was gifted to the National Trust. Once a neglected Edwardian rockery, the area was renovated in 2012 and has since matured into a sensational display of winter colour to explore.

Barmouth,

Eryri:

Dinas Oleu Walk

Starting from Barmouth town centre, take a wintry walk that’s rich in Welsh history. Wander through the winding streets of the Old Town and up to the gorse-covered hillside of Dinas Oleu, which translates to Citadel of Light. This was the first piece of land donated to the National Trust almost 130 years ago and offers spectacular views of Mawddach Estuary and Cardigan Bay stretching towards the Llŷn Peninsula.

Plas Newydd House and Garden, Anglesey: Hidden Corners Walk

Nestled on the shores of the Menai Strait, with dramatic views towards the frosted mountains of Eryri, Plas Newydd’s

location is hard to beat. With 40 acres of gardens to explore there’s plenty to see on a winter’s day. From the mansion to Church Bank Wood, the broad tarmac path is perfect for wheelchairs and prams. Take a moment to pause on one of the many benches along the way to enjoy views across the water. Look out for the famous red squirrels in the Arboretum. Winter is a great time to spot them when there are fewer leaves on the trees.

Chirk Castle, Wrexham: Woodland Walk

Put your boots on and head out on an easy, 2.5 mile stroll with great views of the 480-acre parkland. The woodland is home to many a veteran tree, including a 500-year-old sweet chestnut tree! See if you can spot the first snowdrops of winter peeping through, then come back for a winter’s walk in mid to late February to see the grand finale. Chirk Castle is home to one of the best snowdrop displays in Wales. Marvel at the grand Davies Gates and look out for the estates ha-ha wall; built to keep livestock out of the formal gardens without interrupting the beautiful Welsh views.

Erddig, Wrexham: Riverside Walk

Beginning at the delightful red-brick dovecote, this 1.5-mile trail is the perfect short winter walk for all the family. Follow the green waymarked route which promises glimpses of the 17th Century house and stop off at the cascading circular water feature, called The Cup and Saucer. n

A national institution

The history of the WI is a fascinating one, especially considering its North Walian connections. Dene Bebbington finds out more…

It seems quintessentially British: the Women’s Institute (WI) with their reputation for jam and Jerusalem. Yet, you may be surprised to know that the WI actually originated in rural Canada, then years later it began over here on Anglesey.

Margaret Robertson Watt – better known as Madge Watt – was an indefatigable founding member of the British Columbia WI. She brought news of the movement to Britain in the early years of World War One in the hope of setting up the organisation in her forbears’ home nation. With the help of funds from the Agricultural Organisation Society, who’d

been inviting women to their meetings, the first WI meeting on this side of the Atlantic took place on 16 September 1915 at Llanfairpwll.

A temporary building to hold the first meetings was given by the Marquis and Marchioness of Anglesey who later donated land on which to build a new hall. The meeting format of learning by activities or listening to guest speakers, plus time for a chat over a cup of tea and perhaps a piece a cake, has endured ever since. But the WI didn’t restrict themselves to that.

Towards the end of World War One Britain’s food supplies were in peril due to German U-boats sinking merchant ships in 1917. Thankfully, as an institute initially based in the countryside, the WI was ideally placed to help out on the home front by taking men’s places working the land. They also made jam, bred rabbits for food and fur, and made toys.

Over at Criccieth their WI branch had set up a market stall selling produce grown or made by members at slightly cheaper prices than local sellers. Most of the money made from the market went to the members, with the WI taking a small share to cover expenses. Despite being a great idea for the WI, it undercut and upset local suppliers who had to make a living. Consequently, the National Federation of Women’s Institutes decided to disavow the market as a WI activity.

Of course, there is some truth in the clichéd jam and Jerusalem image. Indeed, jam making has been a big part of it, but how did Jerusalem become their anthem?

William Blake’s poem “And did those feet in ancient time” was turned into the hymn Jerusalem by Sir Hubert Parry who’d set it to music in 1916. Grace Hadow had the job of deciding which songs were appropriate for meetings in the officially non-sectarian WI. She held a competition to find an anthem, but she felt that none of the entries were suitable. So she chose Jerusalem which, as a suffragist, she was familiar with. In 1924 the WI choir sung it at their annual general meeting accompanied by an orchestra.

By 1939 Britain found itself at war again, and again the WI played a crucial role. Their jam making reduced waste by utilising fruits, especially as some like blackberries grew wild. But they contributed far more than just jam. They distributed cod liver oil and health information, raised money for national savings and provided meals for the Home Guard. Eventually the war came to an end in 1945, but before that the WI had been thinking about peacetime.

The WI had always been interested in wider issues beyond a place for women to socialise and learn, or being a welcome energetic presence during the world wars. Campaigning on

social issues to make the country a better place was an innate concern of its national executive – key players in the WI were often involved in other movements such as campaigning for women’s voting rights.

Britain underwent social change during World War Two, resulting in the Labour government of 1948 that held the prospect of addressing intolerable and entrenched social ills. One campaign of particular interest to the WI given the poor state of rural cottages was for better quality housing and sanitation.

North Wales is historically the epicentre of the WI in Britain, and until 1967 the national federation allowed the Welsh WIs to record minutes in their native language. It caused consternation when the federation insisted that from then on only English could be used in written records. That was too much for some members who did more than just grumble, they set up a new organisation called Merched y Wawr (Daughters of the Dawn) which uses the Welsh language.

Our nation would be a lesser place without the WI which has enriched the country for over a century through both war and peace. Though the organisation is long past its peak, it has about 180,000 members across Britain and 12 groups on Anglesey where it all started on these shores. n

We’re dreaming of a green Christmas!

For a twist on the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas, why not do 12 things to connect with nature this month? 1 2 3 4

Feed the birds

We don’t have a partridge in a pear tree for you, but we do have every reason to make sure our winter birds are well fed. Don’t forget to provide fresh water too!

Make a home for wildlife

Things can be tough for hibernating mammals and other creatures who need safe places to overwinter. A messy garden with piles of logs, stones and leaves is a refuge for frogs, toads and overwintering insects.

Take a walk on the wild side

Don’t confine your outdoor forays to a walk on Boxing Day – even the shortest walk, any day of the week, can lift your spirits and clear your head!

Visit a nature reserve

We look after 35 nature reserves across North Wales – there’s bound to be one near you, so why not visit and see what you can spot?

Spot winter visitors

A trip to the coast is a great opportunity to brush up on your bird ID skills and see some wonderful wintering waders and waterfowl, from as far away as northern and eastern Europe.

Go stargazing

Clear winter nights bring the opportunity to appreciate our night sky. While you sit and wait for the constellations to reveal themselves you may be lucky enough to hear a tawny owl!

Have a tidy time

Reduce waste

Buying less, but spending more on local produce, trying new recipes to use up leftovers, and composting vegetable waste are great ways to lessen our impact on the planet.

Shop green this year

From wild species sponsorships to plastic-free presents or even just tickets for an experience, there’s loads of eco-friendly gift ideas to choose from.

Take winter photos

Whatever you do this month, we’d love to see your photos of nature in this beautiful part of the world! Tag us @northwaleswildlifetrust on social media and we’ll share the joy with our followers and supporters.

Take our challenge

With the amount of waste generated at this time of year, things can get messy. How about organising a litter pick in your local area, or join us at one of our winter beach clean events?

With winter settling in and Christmas around the corner, let’s take a trip to the brilliant city of Bangor. Following last issue’s feature on the neighbouring town of Menai Bridge, we’re diving into Bangor’s blend of old-world charm and modern spirit. As the oldest city in Wales, Bangor proudly showcases its rich history, yet it’s also bustling with youthful energy, thanks to the student life brought by Bangor University. Add to that its location between the rugged peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) and the serene Menai Strait, and you’ve got a diverse city that offers plenty.

To begin exploring Bangor, start at its heart: Bangor Cathedral. For over a thousand years, this site has been a place of worship, and it’s a beautiful example of gothic architecture, with grand columns and stunning stained glass. Inside, you’ll find treasures like the 15th Century Mostyn Christ carving and tiny carved mice – clever marks left by furniture maker Robert Thompson.

One of Bangor’s best-loved spots has to be Garth Pier. Stretching almost half a kilometre into the Menai Strait, this Victorian pier is a favourite for both locals and visitors.

Bethany Birch explores Bangor, and discovers that the oldest city in Wales now boasts a vibrant, modern vibe...

Just outside the city is Penrhyn Castle, a 19th Century marvel that resembles a grand fantasy estate. Built by an industrialist with ties to Wales’ famous slate industry, the castle offers a peek into Victorian extravagance with its opulent interiors and impressive art collection. The sprawling gardens are perfect for a family day out or a quiet wander, offering views across the Menai Strait and plenty of space to explore.

One of Bangor’s best-loved spots has to be Garth Pier. Stretching almost half a kilometre into the Menai Strait, this Victorian pier is a favourite for both locals and visitors. With kiosks selling refreshments and arts and crafts, it’s ideal for a relaxed afternoon.

Bangor is also a gateway to the UNESCO-listed Slate Landscape of North West Wales. For those keen to dive deeper into the area’s slate heritage, the Snowdonia Slate Trail begins here. This trail from Bangor to Bethesda takes you through mill streams, historic churches, and the vast Penrhyn Quarry, offering a glimpse into the region’s slate heritage.

Another Bangor gem is Treborth Botanic Garden, tucked within Bangor University’s grounds. Open to the public, it’s a peaceful spot to explore with native woodland, meadows, and six hothouses brimming with exotic cacti, succulents, and

orchids. While the gardens are open daily, the hothouses have limited hours, so it’s wise to check before you visit.

The Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre, situated within Bangor University, is another must-visit. This modern hub brings together art, film, and theatre under one sleek roof. There’s always something going on at Pontio, from live performances and film screenings to workshops and exhibitions. The building itself is impressive too – a bright, open space that feels both modern and welcoming. It’s a great place to experience the city’s creative side, with a café and bar for those who want to linger.

For a nature escape within the city, wrap up and head to Roman Camp, a local favourite with its charming woodlands and open scrubland. This area is part of the Bangor Circular Walk, a trail that leads through peaceful landscapes with views over the Menai Strait and the famous bridges connecting Anglesey. It’s an easy walk, suitable for most abilities, and a lovely way to experience Bangor’s green spaces.

For those seeking nature, Spinnies Aberogwen Nature Reserve, just outside Bangor, is a hidden gem. Known for birdwatching, this reserve has peaceful lagoons, reeds, and bird-filled woodlands. The three bird hides make it a wonderful place to catch sight of kingfishers, herons, and various waterfowl, with views stretching across pretty Ogwen beach as well.

And, of course, no visit to Bangor would be complete without a stroll down its lively high street. You’ll find an assortment of independent shops, cosy cafés, and local eateries that are perfect for a spot of Christmas shopping. Whether you’re here for the history, the outdoors, or the culture, Bangor offers a little bit of everything. With its close connection to the stunning landscapes of North Wales all around, Bangor is a city that’s easy to enjoy all year round. n

The Dead Faeries in the Deiniol Centre in Bangor is the result of a dream that owner Caroline has had since she was 17 and on the YTS in a gift shop. “l loved working in retail, adored my job and the dream started that one day I would have my own shop and fill it with things I loved,” she explains. The Dead Faeries was originally a craft stall around Gwynedd and Ynys Môn, as Caroline used to make all of her own stock and sell at craft fairs. Then, in 2020 she was offered a pop up shop and the rest is history!! Caroline now deals with over 40 companies in order to offer the biggest choice of alternative gifts in the region, and the selection continues to grow. And Caroline’s dream got even better when her daughter Gabi opened her shop Alora next door last Christmas, with bath bombs and soaps. www.thedeadfaeries.com

Meet the maker

Hi, I’m Katie a silversmith based in North Wales. I love and collect shells, incorporating them into my design pieces using sterling silver as my main setting material, but can also use other metals within my designs. Apart from shells my favourite stones are labradorite and larimar. Some examples of my Labradorite stone rings are below. Each individual piece has been inspired by the ocean, made for free spirited souls with dreams and positive vibes.

Jane owns her own jewellery workshop and shop within Beaumaris – beautifully handcrafted jewellery by local artists are situated within Jane’s shop.

Jane has a special place in my heart because without Jane’s advice years ago I wouldn’t be where I am now. My journey as a silversmith has grown from strength to strength – and it’s thanks to this wonderful lady.

Jane has inspired me from the beginning of my journey and I thank her so much for the advice she has given me to be confident with learning and growing as an independent artist.

Pop into Jane’s shop to see all the creative inspiration that’s around. Jane’s own jewellery is handcrafted in her workshop by herself, everything is carefully handcrafted and beautifully designed to then go into her stunning display cabinets.

The shell and crab claw necklace pendants below are beach treasures found on Beaumaris beach by Jane then cast in silver.

Handmade jewellery inspired by the ocean

Food for thought

There are three great vintages when it comes to Christmas in the UK. The first is the Victorian Christmas when many of the traditions we still celebrate first emerged and Charles Dickens was around to bring them vividly to life. The second was the 1950s Christmas when we started importing traditions from post-war America and no Christmas was complete without the sound of Sinatra, Crosby or Nat ‘King’ Cole singing about chestnuts roasting in open fires and the like.

Then it all came home again in the 1970s, when toys became more amazing then ever, when most of the repeats we watch on TV each year first appeared, and when Noddy Holder first shattered his larynx by screaming ‘It’s Christmas!!!!!!’

Since then, we seem to have been revelling in the glories of the past, as one often does when observing traditions, but the more I talk to people my age, the more I think that the 1980s were a bit of a golden era too. It was still an analogue age, so there was no internet or Nintendo Switch option, so we never had the ability to disappear off online. The charts still mattered, and the vital issue of who scored the Christmas Number One was a life-and-death matter, as was the subject of who got to choose between BBC 1 and the unmissable Bond movie on ITV.

One thing I’ve always loved is party food, even if there are only the four of us at home with no party in sight. If you are throwing a festive shindig, there are all sorts of glorious tit-bits out there to buy, but if you want something unique and homemade, try this recipe. Brandade is a very traditional French Christmas staple; the kind of thing passed around on pretty trays on Christmas Eve. Who knows? If it goes down well, it could become an annual tradition!

Enjoy, and from everyone at Paysanne, Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noël, and Nadolig Llawen.

BRANDADE DU MORUE

750g cod loin

375g peeled potatoes

1 medium sized onion, finely chopped

4 cloves garlic ground into a purée

1 good pinch grated nutmeg

1 pinch of paprika

Half a lemon

Good, extra virgin olive oil

Milk

White pepper

In France, they would use salt cod for this, which you would have to soak repeatedly for days, but just use some good quality skinless cod loin and you’ll be grand.

Slowly cook the onions and the garlic purée in a little olive oil, taking care not to burn anything. Boil the potatoes until soft, then reserve. Simmer the cod very lightly for about six or seven minutes (don’t overdo it), and throw the water out. You should now be able to easily remove any bones and bits of skin from the fish, and having done that, roughly blend everything together with potato masher.

You now need two small sauce-pans: one to warm up a good cup-full of olive oil and one of milk, which you add to the blend alternately, stirring it all the time with a fork. Add the seasoning and a good squeeze of the lemon and continue to beat it all up until you have the consistency you are looking for. Some people blend it into a smooth paste, but I prefer to see a bit of texture.

Cai Ross is co-owner aand Maitre d’ of the award-winning Paysanne Bistro in Deganwy, which has been serving French country-style food to the fine people of North Wales since 1988. Cai’s cook book, North Wales Fish & Seafood, is out now.

ROTATING STREET

Cocktail of the month

The Snowball

To coincide with the launch of our Christmas menu, we at Number 25 are bringing extra cheer to December with our cocktail of the month – the Snowball! And honestly, could any cocktail be more Christmassy?

According to Difford’s Guide, the classic Snowball is a delightful concoction of 60ml Warninks Advocaat Liqueur – a Dutch creation blending brandy, egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla – half a freshly squeezed lime, and a bubbly lengthen of lemonade. The method is simple yet elegant: begin with a touch of ice and lemonade, stir in the lime and Advocaat (gently to preserve the fizz), and voilà! For the finishing touch, garnish with a lime wedge, lemon twist, or leave it bare for a minimalist look.

If you’re in the mood for a little extra Christmas spirit (pun intended!), there are a few boozy tweaks you can make to elevate this festive favourite. A single measure of dry sherry lends a subtle edge, while a splash of Cognac amplifies the Advocaat’s brandy base, delivering rich notes of dried fruit and vanilla. Feeling fancy? Trade the lime garnish for a decadent Luxardo Maraschino cherry, and you’ve got a Snowball fit for Santa himself.

There’s something about the Snowball that never fails to light up the room – and not just because it’s the colour of freshly fallen snow. This classic Christmas cocktail has a whimsical charm, bringing nostalgia, joy, and a bit of sparkle to the season.

Its festive appeal is no mystery: the frothy, snow-capped appearance, creamy texture, and simple preparation make it a quintessential holiday treat.

Though its popularity waned in recent years (replaced by glasses of Prosecco and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc),

the Snowball is making a comeback – or should we say, it’s snowballing its way back to the top of Christmas cocktail lists!

Advocaat, the heart of the Snowball, is a traditional Dutch liqueur known affectionately as “boozy custard.” And really, who doesn’t love boozy custard? The combination of eggs and booze isn’t new – old English recipes for possets and flips feature similar ingredients, often spiced and heated. Some even involved poking a red-hot poker into ale, which was said to leave the drink “nogged” – a possible origin of the word eggnog.

So, this December, whether you’re on Santa’s good list or just pretending to be, why not raise a glass (or two) of Snowball cheer? After all, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a little festive nostalgia and, at Number 25, we’re here to make sure you savour every magical sip. n

Paddy Dobbs is the bar manager at Number 25 in Rhos on Sea. This local bar and bistro is home to a cosy restaurant upstairs and a welcoming cocktail bar downstairs – making it the ideal venue, whatever the occasion.

Wines

As the wise man Noddy Holder once said… IT’S CHRRIIIISSSSTTTTMAAAASSS! It’s a time for tradition, and every household has its own way of celebrating Christmas and New Year with family and friends. I am lucky enough to regularly try wines from all over the world, but at this time of year I like to stick to the classics, and they always seem to fit the bill.

It’s a busy time of year for the wine trade, so Christmas doesn’t really start for me until Christmas Eve. My little boy loves leaving a mince pie, carrots and a glass of sherry out for Siôn Corn before he heads to bed, dreaming of what tomorrow will bring. Christmas Day must start with a glass or two of fizz, then for lunch we’ll have the favourites. Prawn cocktail for starter, usually turkey with all the trimmings, although sometimes beef. After all that, I’ll rest my eyes for a while until the cheeseboard comes out. Here are my choices to

Tanners Cream Sherry - £15.50

The perfect pairing with a mince pie! Beautifully fruity, sweet and creamy, with a hit of freshness on the finish, so never gets too cloying. Keep it in the fridge to go back to over the festive period.

Nyetimber Classic Cuvée, English Sparkling Wine - £38, on offer for £30 until 6th

January 2025

Just about my favourite sparkling wine at the moment, this world class fizz is just the ticket while you’re opening your presents, and to take you through to lunch.

Piesporter Goldtröpfchen

Riesling Kabinett, Hain, Mosel 2022 - £14.95

Prawn Cocktail is a pretty sweet starter, with the prawns and Marie Rose sauce, so you need something with a touch of sweetness to pair with it. This peachy Riesling will go down a treat.

I love a red Burgundy with turkey, the juicy red fruit working with the meat and all the trimmings just like cranberry sauce. This is a long-standing favourite from a family-owned producer in Côte Chalonnaise.

Château Cissac, Haut-Médoc 2017 - £21

Whether its turkey or beef, there’s always room for claret. Cissac is classic left bank Bordeaux, full of blackcurrant fruit and ripe tannins. It’s old school but it works every time!

Manoella 10-Year-Old Tawny Port, Wine & Soul - £34

If you have a cheeseboard with several different styles on there, it’s hard to pick a wine that will go well with all of them. Nutty, fruity tawny port pairs well with most cheese, and Wine & Soul produce a soft, yet beautifully complex wine that goes particularly well with stilton.

CÂR-Y-MÔR

If locally-sourced gifts are your priority this Christmas, explore the fantastic range from Câry-Môr, Wales’ first regenerative ocean farm.

In the early hours, while most of us are still asleep, Câr-y-Môr’s network of small-catch fishermen head into Pembrokeshire’s icy waters. Braving strong currents and damp sea air, they return with the day’s best catch—plump crabs, sweet prawns, and hearty lobsters—a taste of the sea steeped in tradition.

Closer to shore, the team harvests rope-grown mussels from their regenerative farm in Ramsey Sound. In the kitchen, they prepare the haul to stock their shop and ship to customers and restaurants across the UK.

Welsh seafood is incredible year-round, but winter is its peak. If you’re looking for something special this Christmas, Câr-y-Môr’s fresh hampers, platters and tasting boxes offer options to suit all pockets. Available to order online or pick up from their on-site shop in St. Davids, these selections are the perfect way to taste the Welsh coastline at its best.

For foodies, the Pembrokeshire Beach Food Co. range, now part of the Câr-y-Môr family, offers deli products made with hand-harvested seaweed. From laverbread and dried seaweed to award-winning sauces, seasonings and seaweed butter, these items make for unique gifts that showcase Welsh heritage, this Christmas and beyond.

A fun fact: laver seaweed, or “Welshman’s Caviar,” has had a place on Welsh tables for centuries, with references dating back to 1607! Câr-y-Môr’s version is a bestseller, available on its own or in the Seren Y Môr gift hamper, alongside Mermaid’s Confetti, Môr Kelpchup and more.

For green thumbs, Câr-y-Môr’s liquid seaweed fertilisers and foliar sprays nourish plants naturally, using seaweed that would otherwise go to waste—a sustainable, effective alternative to chemical fertilisers.

Can’t decide? Gift cards are available so your loved ones can pick their favourites.

“Christmas at Câr-y-Môr is a mixture of heart and grit,” says Owen Haines, a founding member. “We work hard to bring our customers the very best the wild Welsh coastline has to offer. From fresh shellfish hampers to deli products made with hand-harvested seaweed in Pembrokeshire, our Christmas range is full of unique present and food options to add some Welsh-flavour to your celebrations. Every purchase supports our community-owned business, creating jobs, offering delicious food and improving the environment across land and sea for generations to come.” n

Barti Rum wins Gold for “BEST RUM” at Great British Food Awards 2024

Renowned food expert and TV personality Merlin Griffiths has awarded Barti Spiced Rum a gold Badge at this year’s Great British Food Awards.

The team behind Barti Rum is proud to announce that they have been awarded a gold accolade at the Great British Food Awards 2024 within the spirits category for its spiced rum. The winning entry from West Wales, will now be regarded as one of the very best products available within the UK’s exciting food and drink sector in 2024.

Barti Spiced is a rum described by its creators as the most flavourful spiced rum on the market. A symphony of classic spices such as vibrant vanilla, subtle cinnamon and sweet citrus are combined and infused with wild picked laver seaweed, the seaweed serves to lift and enhance the traditional warming taste and make the drink exceptionally smooth. Barti boasts it’s chameleon like ability to be savoured as a sipping drink, while being equally enjoyable and unlost with a mixer or cocktail.

The item was judged by top industry expert Merlin Griffiths who some will know as the head bar tender in Channel 4’s First Dates. Griffiths also runs a chain of successful bars in the North of England.

Category judge Merlin Griffiths described Barti Rum as follows: “What a wonderful spiced spirit Barti is. It has lashings of vanilla, citrus, cinnamon and cloves all underpinned by a subtle umami note from Welsh seaweed. Satisfying both neat on the rocks, and in Daiquiri or Swizzle. Add solid eco credentials and stylish packaging, and we have really fun spiced rum. Truly excellent spiced spirit.”

Having been awarded the highest accolade within the Great British Food Awards 2024, Barti Spiced Rum will now be

Of the win, Fran Barnikel, managing director at Barti Rum said: “This is an enormous badge of honour for our much loved spiced rum. There are so many wonderful spirit brands in the UK today, to get this recognition nationally is really very special. We’re glad the judges like it as much as we do!”

Barti’s win comes within the first weeks of the product appearing on the shelves of Tesco regionally in Wales. The now award winning Barti Spiced as well as a second product, Barti Cream Liqueur launched in Tesco in September this year and Tesco shoppers cannot get enough of it, so much so that shelves are starting to become sparse while the Tesco supply system struggles to keep abreast of orders to fulfil demand. Paul Johns, store manager in Haverfordwest stated: “Sales are excellent! I’m struggling to keep up with it!”

Sources suggest that huge surges in sales in hot spot areas is seriously unusual for a newly listed product, so much so it’s causing the algorithm which generates orders to get confused leading to empty space in store where the bottles should be. Barti Cream has been the main victim of this meaning shoppers are struggling to get their fix of the unique, creamy, plant-based liqueur. Not ideal given the creators behind it struggled to keep at this very same time last year when Barti Cream was initially launched.

“People actually call it the great Barti cream drought of 2023, we really don’t want to be in that situation again!” commented Erin at Barti Rum. n

Barti Spiced, winner of the Great British Food award for “Best Rum” is available from lots of brilliant independent stockists around the country, Tesco and Co-op in Wales, and of course online at www.bartirum.wales

promoted across Great British Food’s print, online and social channels in celebration of its achievement.

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

TIPS FOR REDUCING STRESS AT WORK

Do you sometimes feel stressed, not due to your own situation but that of the person you are helping as part of your job?

Vicarious emotion is when we take on the stress of someone else as if it were our own, and it can be a common issue in many industries, such as healthcare and law, when professionals are acting on behalf of people who have gone through trauma.

Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, which has offices in Conwy, works with a health and wellbeing coach to provide staff with the tools they need to help them with their mental health.

Jo Plimmer, of WATT (Wood And The Trees) Coaching, says there are a variety of methods which can help people deal with stress in the workplace.

“I previously worked as a physio in the NHS, and despite doing lots of things that I loved, I just became exhausted by spinning so many plates and ended up really struggling,” she explains.

“I didn’t realise I was burned out until quite a lot further down the line when I started researching. As I talked to more people, I realised that so many others were in the same situation, which led me to where I am now – working with people and businesses like Lanyon Bowdler to understand and manage their health and wellbeing, particularly when it comes to chronic stress and avoiding burn-out.”

Emma Harrison, learning and development manager at Lanyon Bowdler, says: “As a firm we are committed to looking after the mental health of our staff. Client interactions can involve everything from a catastrophic injury to a multi-million pound business negotiation, which can be stressful and have a huge impact on our team.

“Jo’s work mirrors our values – caring, approachable, professional, expert and supportive – and her work really helps us care for our staff. Jo’s expertise helps our staff de-stress as much as possible, creating a supportive environment to enable them to enjoy their job and minimise the risk of burn-out.”

Here are some of Jo’s tips to help reduce stress during your working day…

“A common issue, not just with lawyers but with many professionals who deal with stressful situations involving their clients, is vicarious emotion – basically feeling stressed on behalf of your client because you empathise with them.

“So if you have been talking to someone who has gone through a stressful experience, just taking a moment to recognise that you are feeling emotional and stressed is an important first step.

“Then, even doing something as simple as concentrating on feeling your feet on the floor, your hands on your desk, your clothes on your skin, just allows you to tune back into yourself and what you are feeling.

“Try doing a body scan – go through your body and think about where those emotions are sitting. Then picture them draining out of your body, perhaps through your feet or releasing them through your breath. Imagery like this can be really effective.” n

The Autumn Budget – a brave new tax world Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s first Budget introduced a substantial increase in spending, taxation, and borrowing, as noted by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

Key figures highlight these shifts:

• annual spending will increase by nearly £70 billion over the next five years

• taxation will rise by £36 billion annually

• borrowing is projected to remain above £70 billion in 2029/30.

Bound by Labour’s commitment to freeze rates on income tax, VAT, corporation tax, and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) for employees, Reeves sought revenue from other sources. Over half of the additional revenue will come from changes to employer NICs from 2025/26, increasing the class 1 rate from 13.8% to 15% and lowering the payment threshold. Meanwhile, capital gains tax rates will rise, inheritance tax relief for certain properties will reduce from 2026, and death benefits from pensions will face inheritance tax from 2027. The Budget’s measures signal a shift toward a higher-tax environment, impacting businesses and individuals alike. To prepare for these changes, it’s recommended to seek guidance and plan accordingly from an independent advisor such as Hartey Wealth Management, as early preparation can mitigate the impact of these policies on your finances. www.harteywm.co.uk

Highfield Park Earns Top Ratings for Care Services

CIW’s rigorous inspection framework evaluates care providers across several areas such as, Care & Support, Wellbeing, Leadership & Management and Environment.

Each area receives one of four ratings – Excellent, Good, Needs Improvement or Poor. An ‘Excellent’ rating shows that a service consistently goes above and beyond, highlighting a services focus on providing extremely high-quality care.

Of the 13 services based at Highfield Park in Llandyrnog, eight achieved the top rating of ‘Excellent’, with the remaining five receiving a rating of ‘Good’. Some highlights from the inspection reports included “exceptional leadership and management,” praising the “highly creative” and “motivated” staff, as well as the “comprehensive training” offered by the organisation. All five homes who applied to become an Autism accredited service were all successful.

These outstanding results reflect Highfield Park’s role as a national leader in delivering outcome focussed, personcentred care within the sector.

Putting People First

Highfield Park’s success is driven by its focus on personcentred care, ensuring that each individual’s needs, preferences and goals are at the forefront of everything. The organisation’s approach is underpinned by its mission, vision and the ten values that guide them. From this, suitable outcomes are identified enabling individuals to achieve greater independence within personalised settings designed to accommodate their unique needs.

Shaun Jones, Director of Operations & Responsible Individual at Highfield Park, explained: “The primary aim is to create homely environments where individuals can achieve the best possible outcomes. The evidence-based approaches and focus on continuous improvement used within Highfield Park

services allows us to uphold the standards we aim for, and our regulators ratings reflect the hard work of the staff every day.”

Experienced and Skilled Teams

Highfield Park, which is part of the MHC group and is based within an area of outstanding natural beauty, has recently earned top ratings within the social care sector following a series of inspections by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) and the National Autistic society. For further information please visit www.mentalhealthcare-uk.com

In addition to regular training, staff at Highfield Park receive specialised training tailored to the specific needs of those they support. This includes an innovative trauma-informed approach to understanding the complex needs of individuals in our care, allowing staff to offer compassionate and effective support.

Thlighting their ability to provide high quality, outcome focussed support that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals they care for.

Aiming for National Leadership

While the services at Highfield Park celebrate their extremely positive inspection feedback, the team is dedicated to maintaining momentum and striving for even higher standards.

Shaun added: “We are delighted with these results, however this is just the start. The goal is to continue improving services, investing in people, facilities, and methods to ensure a leading position in care provision across the UK. I am extremely proud of all staff on Highfield Park for making this happen.”

By continually refining its services and driving innovation in care, Highfield Park’s variety of care services are positioning themselves as providers of choice for individuals with complex needs.

Focus on the Future

Recognising the importance of growth, Highfield Park and MHC are committed to continuous improvement. Recent achievements in securing excellent ratings serve as a testament to the progress made in elevating standards of care and support and highlight the teams desire to learn from the past.

Highfield Park’s success is a testament to the MHC group’s long-term commitment to improving the lives of the individuals in our care. With a focus on person-centred, outcome-driven support, Highfield Park will continue to build on this solid foundation, ensuring the best possible care for individuals today and in the future. n

WORDS of TRUTH

The role of technology in funerals

In today’s digital age, technology has become a significant part of our everyday lives. It’s also playing an increasingly important role in how we undertake funeral services. This allows for more personalised, accessible and meaningful ways to celebrate a life.

Here are some ways that we have embraced technology in the funeral services we organise:

Online Tribute page

Hosted by Much Loved, our online tribute pages are set up for every individual who we look after and are a powerful way to create a lasting memorial to the person that has died. The online tribute pages allow visitors to upload and view photos, leave messages of condolence and even make donations to charities. The tribute site can be shared to social media, allowing an easy way to share details of the funeral service to your friends and family.

QR Codes

One of the innovations we have embraced for a few years, is the use of a QR code on the back of our service booklets. These small scannable codes provide families and attendees with an easy way to access the online tribute page on our website, dedicated to the person that has died with a simple scan using a smartphone.

Webcast Service

Using technology within funerals

Technology, when used thoughtfully, can enhance the traditional funeral experience and offer new ways for people to express their grief, share their memories and feel connected no matter where they are. It’s not about replacing the warmth of personal interaction but enriching it.

Another benefit of integrating technology into funeral services, is the ability to offer webcast services. These livestreamed services allow family members and friends, who may be geographically distant or unable to attend the funeral due to health or mobility reasons, to still be part of the service. The service can also be recorded and shared at a later date.

Photo Tributes

A slideshow of photos, set to a favourite piece of music, has become a really popular way to personalise a funeral service. By playing a montage of photos, that reflect the person’s life and accompanied by music that meant something to them or the family, allows attendees to reminisce, reflect and celebrate the person’s life.

If you are interested in learning more about how we can help you to integrate these digital services into your funeral planning, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are here to ensure that every life is remembered and celebrated. n

December’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)

All of a sudden on the 1st it might seem like a good idea to learn a new subject, take an educational course or book a long distance trip. The New Moon encourages you to want to expand your horizons. Learning a foreign language, listening to music from other countries and watching Christmas movies are all possibilities that will give you pleasure. Be open to experiment in traditions that are alien to you on the 15th. The Full Moon will bring a variety of exciting and unusual experiences.

TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)

Financial matters need to be considered on the 1st when the New Moon asks: do you carry on as usual when it comes to making money and spending cash or will you face the sobering realities of your situation? If you’re shopping for Christmas gifts around the 12th, you will find something practical and something unusual; both items are bound to delight a close friend or loved one. The Full Moon on the 15th pushes you to get a move on. It is time to finish a job you long to see the end of.

GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)

Spending time with someone you love will feel enriching on the 1st. You enjoy a variety of friendships and the New Moon favours the company of your family or your partner. Harness new technology to drive and support your creativity on the 7th. You will wish you had more time for leisure pursuits on the 12th. A restless Full Moon on the 15th makes you eager for a change. Your usual surroundings will lose their appeal. If it feels like your energy has nowhere to go, go for a walk.

CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)

You will discover you share many similar views and interests with someone you work or mix with socially on the 1st. The New Moon suggests this could develop into a strong friendship and even romance if you are single. You will enjoy developing new projects with colleagues on the 5th. Passions are boiling over on the 12th. Local protests will cause some disturbances and disruptions. The 13th is a great time to submit a request or make a presentation.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)

You will feel happiest on the 1st when you’re spending time with people you can meet on your own level. The New Moon highlights friendship and romance as being a profound source of pleasure. Eat small meals to avoid overloading your digestive system on the 12th. Look after your health. A close relationship will tread new ground on the 13th. Someone who is new to your life will disappoint you mid-December.

VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)

You may need to think carefully about family arrangements when the New Moon on the 1st draws attention to home and domestic concerns. Any repairs being made to your home on the 4th will require your supervision. You need to know the work is being carried out to your satisfaction. It can be all fun and games when it is appropriate but the Full Moon on the 15th suggests a need to be sensible, practical and focused.

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)

Your future security will be your main concern on the 1st as the New Moon turns your attention to possible plans for the future. It will help you to know your partner shares similar goals and aspirations. A spiritual practice on the 13th will prevent you from getting too bogged down with material concerns. The Full Moon breathes life into an ongoing project as new information received on the 15th can be used to your benefit.

SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)

Friends will be getting together to raise money for a charitable venture as the month begins. The New Moon on the 1st suggests this is a great opportunity for you to get involved with like-minded people. Are you single? Enjoy online friendships but there’s nothing like human personal connection on the 7th. Think about using technology to improve the stories you can tell on the 13th. Start a blog, launch a website or record a podcast.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)

The New Moon on the 1st marks this as your time to draw on the magic that’s within you. Whatever goal you are aiming for, set aside some time every day to visualise yourself achieving it. Keep thinking positively on the 5th and believe in your ability to turn dreams into reality. The Full Moon on the 15th invites you to open up your heart to others. Put time into building a partnership or a team with others who are on the same wavelength as yourself.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)

Protecting your privacy will be a priority on the 1st when the New Moon encourages a strong desire for solitude. Some time spent alone will enable you to recharge your emotional and spiritual batteries in readiness for whatever the rest of the month might bring. On the 4th, you can trust your intuition about new creative pursuits. A playful interlude on the 7th will feel refreshing. Keeping a sense of humour has its benefits.

AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)

Your popularity is at an all-time high on the 1st when the New Moon will be bringing a number of invitations to parties, fun get-togethers and festive occasions. A new friendship will have a transformative effect on your life on the 7th. Getting involved in a community or political organisation will thrust you into the limelight on the 13th. You just want to have fun on the 15th but resist the temptation to cut corners.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)

Being of service to others on the 1st will give you a sense of purpose. The New Moon will bring opportunities for you to do volunteer work for organisations you admire. A fun festive event on the 7th will bring you into contact with people who share your creative ambitions. If an agreement over a family matter can’t be reached by the Full Moon on the 15th it might be time to scrap the idea altogether.
