The South Stack Lighthouse is built on a small island off the north-west coast of Holyhead. The 91-foot lighthouse has warned passing ships of the treacherous rocks below since its completion in 1809. It provides the first beacon along the northern coast of Anglesey for ships on the treacherous Dublin–Holyhead–Liverpool sea route. It is followed by lighthouses, fog horns and other markers at North Stack, Holyhead Breakwater, The Skerries, the Mice, Point Lynas and at the south-east tip of the island Trwyn Du. The lighthouse is open seasonally, and visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and tour the engine room and exhibition area. If you are planning to tackle the descent to visit the lighthouse, remember to purchase your tickets at the top before going down all 365 steps!

Criccieth Exploring

Bethany Birch visits Criccieth, and discovers a coastal town full of charm…

Close to the scenic coastline of North Wales, Criccieth is a town that blends history with natural beauty. Approaching from the southeast, the journey offers a striking introduction to the area – rolling hills, sea views, and glimpses of Harlech Castle before Criccieth itself comes into view.

With its iconic castle perched above the sea and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, it’s a place that invites visitors to slow down and soak in its charm. The drive into Criccieth from Porthmadog is one of my favourites, both now and in childhood. Holidaying often near Aberdyfi, we would take the coastal route up to Criccieth for the day. That first glimpse of the sea as we neared the town was always exhilarating – a surge of joy that never faded. We’d spot the castle in the distance, craning our necks out of the window to catch sight of the beach. Were the white horses chasing the shore, or was the water glassy and calm? With the windows down, the briny scent of seaweed and saltwater filled the air, mingling with the summertime high. Even now, that view remains one of my favourites, carrying with it the magic of childhood nostalgia.

two beaches. Built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th Century, the castle played a key role in Welsh-English conflicts before being taken by Edward I’s forces. Today, its ruins remain an enduring symbol of the town’s past, with panoramic views stretching across Cardigan Bay. Walking through the site, it’s easy to imagine the history that unfolded within its walls, from medieval skirmishes to the quieter days of later centuries.

Criccieth Castle dominates the landscape, standing proudly on a headland between the town’s

A short drive towards Pwllheli leads to Penarth Fawr, a beautifully preserved medieval hall house dating back to the 15th Century. Though modest in size, it boasts an impressive interior, with striking timber beams that showcase the craftsmanship of the era.

Criccieth’s beaches stretch out on either side of the castle, offering a mix of pebbles, rock pools, and pockets of sand. Their sheltered position makes them a great choice for families, with children happily exploring the shallows and searching for marine life among the rocks. A walk along the promenade, perhaps with an ice cream in hand, is a simple but enjoyable way to take in the seaside atmosphere. Along the High Street, independent cafés and restaurants offer everything from traditional fish and chips to seasonal seafood, all served with warm Welsh hospitality.

For those arriving by train, Criccieth is well-connected along the Cambrian Coast line, which offers one of the most scenic railway journeys in Britain

For those seeking long, sandy beaches, there are excellent options nearby. Just a short drive towards Porthmadog leads to Black Rock Sands, a vast expanse of golden beach ideal for building sandcastles or catching waves on a bodyboard. In the opposite direction, the beaches at Abererch and Llanbedrog offer more sheltered conditions, making them great choices for families.

No trip to the seaside is complete without the sweet, sticky delight of ice cream. With a handful of ice cream parlours to choose from, the hardest decision might be whether to go for raspberry ripple or mint choc chip. Criccieth is also home to Cadwaladers, a beloved Welsh ice cream brand that was founded in the town. With a secret recipe dating back to the 1920s, it remains a favourite among visitors looking to enjoy a classic seaside treat. Whether you're indulging in an ice cream cone or lingering over a meal with a view, food is an essential part of the Criccieth experience.

For those arriving by train, Criccieth is well-connected along the Cambrian Coast line, which offers one of the most scenic railway journeys in Britain. The train hugs the coastline, revealing stunning sea views on one side and the towering peaks of Snowdonia on the other.

The Wales Coast Path also passes through the area, making it easy to explore the coastline on foot. With regular train and bus links between nearby towns, walkers can enjoy a oneway route before using public transport to return.

Beyond the town itself, Criccieth serves as a gateway to the Llŷn Peninsula. A short drive west leads to the coastal villages and quiet coves that give this part of Wales its distinctive charm. The nearby town of Porthmadog, with its marina and

heritage railway, offers another glimpse into the area’s history and connection to the sea. Whether staying in Criccieth or using it as a base for wider exploration, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the landscape.

Criccieth has a slower pace than some of North Wales’ busier tourist spots, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s a place to wander through independent shops, pause on a bench overlooking the water, and take in the timeless quality of a town that remains closely tied to both its past and the natural beauty that surrounds it. Whether visiting for the first time or returning year after year, Criccieth has a way of leaving a lasting impression. n

So Beth! What have you been up to since the last 'North Wales Magazine' article back in 2023?

Creating new artwork has unfortunately been on the back burner a bit lately as I have been making some fundamental changes to our business to improve my customers’ experience. In June 2024 with the help of Gwynedd Council’s 'Spark Fund', I invested in a state-of-the-art large format full colour fine art printer and brought on an additional member of staff, bringing all my printing, canvas stretching and framing operations in house. This has enabled me to take orders for pictures and have them printed, stretched, framed and shipped to my customers more efficiently. we are very proud to be doing everything under one BIG green roof!

A successful application for the Welsh Government’s 'Future Proofing Fund' in September 2024 has also allowed me to invest in some additional printing equipment, this will enable us to manufacture new products on the premises such as cups and other ceramics. I’ve also given our signage for the gallery a much-needed overhaul, encouraging customers to come up the stairs when you are based on the first floor can be a real challenge! Especially when they can’t see from the street what you have inside. When people do enter my gallery they have a positive, enjoyable experience and have been full of praise and enthusiasm for what we are doing, so a HUGE thank you to all those customers curious enough to venture up the stairs and for kindly spreading the word too.

It sounds like you’ve been busy getting the business organised! What do you do to relax Beth?

Over the last 12 months I have fallen in love with pottery! I’ve discovered that throwing a pot is one of the most mindful and rewarding activities you can do, when immersed in a pottery project you become totally engrossed, your mind fully occupied by the clay. It’s such a peaceful environment to be in, highly relaxing.

So, you’re branching out into ceramics?

I’m currently embarking on a ceramics course on my day off,

Design for life

We caught up with Caernarfon-based artist Beth Horrocks to find out what she’s been working on…

I’ve always fancied having a go - it’s such a lovely skill to learn. I am considering the possibility of one day being able to produce ceramic pieces good enough to exhibit at my gallery, although I’m not going to put any unnecessary pressure on myself… But hey! You never know?

What do you have in store for the gallery this year?

I have lots of exciting plans for the future! Including organising an art trail to promote Caernarfon’s rich and lively art scene, an autumnal treasure hunt and creepy kids workshop and finally we will end the year with a winter exhibition. I will also be setting aside some much needed “me time” to produce some new artwork.

Any other news you would like to share with us?

Yes! We have extended our opening hours, since there are now three of us working in the gallery it has allowed us to be open for longer, over six days of the week. n

Starting at the main station ‘Gilfach Ddu’ on Padarn Country Park, the journey takes you past the 13th Century Dolbadarn Castle, crossing Afon y Bala and passing between Llanberis’ twin lakes of Peris and Padarn as the train makes its journey to the Village of Llanberis. From here, the train runs non-stop through Padarn Country Park, joining the historic 1845 slate railway route and along the shores of Padarn Lake to Penllyn giving stunning views of the Eryri landscape and Yr Wyddfa. On its return, the train makes a short stop at Cei Llydan, an ideal spot for a lakeside picnic. Chosen by Visit Wales as one of the top ten places for a picnic, combining “the fun of an old-fashioned picnic with the romance of a ride on a vintage train”. The five-mile return journey takes around 60 minutes and all passenger trains are hauled by a vintage steam engine, that has been lovingly restored from their days of working in the nearby Dinorwic slate quarries.

Carchar Rhuthun yn 250 oed

With updated exhibitions and new activities for visitors of all ages, Ruthin Gaol is celebrating 250 years of history from its time as a prison, a war time factory, and a unique piece of local history.

Gydag arddangosfeydd wedi’u diweddaru a gweithgareddau newydd i ymwelwyr o bob oed, mae Carchar Rhuthun yn dathlu 250 mlynedd o hanes o’i gyfnod fel carchar, ffatri yn ystod y rhyfel a darn unigryw o hanes lleol.

In compassion to the unfortunate

Although a house of correction had stood on the site since much earlier, it was in 1775 that the oldest remaining part of Ruthin Gaol was built. Designed and executed by renowned local architect Joseph Turner, its construction marked a new era in the prison’s history, coinciding with major reforms in the treatment of prisoners.

Over time, new attitudes to crime and punishment led to the strict Victorian approach designed to reform, rather than simply punish, reflected in the iconic architecture of the Pentonville wing, which visitors can explore today.

“Britain’s Strangest War Factory”

Having ceased operations as a prison in 1916, the site was repurposed as a munitions factory during World War II, offering a relatively safer location for Liverpool-based Lang Pen Company to operate. With the machinery came female machinists from Liverpool who trained and worked alongside local women from Ruthin. Together, they played a vital role in the war effort and became known collectively as the Munitionettes.

A unique Victorian prison experience

Today, Ruthin Gaol offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the Gaol’s history, experiencing daily life for those who lived and worked here through captivating exhibitions and interactive puzzle trails, for younger visitors. This milestone year presents the perfect occasion for local visitors to rediscover this popular heritage attraction and reconnect with an important part of local history. n

Food for thought

From what I remember from GCSE Physics, Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I don’t know about ‘equal’ or ‘opposite’ but it’s something that will often pop into my head in January and February, during the fourth or fifth consecutive day of rain. ‘Yes,’ I’ll muse, ‘it’s grim, I’m stuck inside, I’m not sure how many more episodes of Murder She Wrote I can sit through… but think of the grass we’ll get this year.’ Then I think of the lamb.

It’s Easter this month, refreshingly late into the year, and for many people, this means a lamb roast. North Wales lamb, specifically, because ours is second to none. Why? Well, ideally you should ask someone whose family have been sheep farming in North Wales for over 370 years, so I spoke to just such a fellow, Gareth Wyn Jones, farmer and television star –he of the splendid iconic cap and waistcoat ensemble – about why our lamb has the edge.

“Well, you’ve got some of the best salt marsh lamb up here,

where the lambs eat all that lovely samphire all day. Plus if you take the Carneddau mountain range, 27,000 acres, the biggest open space in England and Wales, it has some of the rarest flora and fauna there, and our lambs are munching on that all summer. That’s why I say you should be embarrassed if you put any herbs and spices onto our lamb because it’s already in the meat.

“We’ve had recipe hunters from all over the world over here looking for lamb recipes. One couple from New York were sat in my kitchen and I made them one of my favourites: my North Wales lamb with mushy peas in a sandwich. And they’d never tasted lamb like it. They were blown away.”

When he’s not hurtling about on his quad bike, tending to his herd, Gareth leads guests – and plenty of them – on immersive tours around his Tynllwyfan farm with his wife Rhian. “We talk about the importance of sustainability, and watching after these specialised breeds, bred up on the mountains for generations because they’re tough and hardy, and some of the best tasting meat you’ll ever eat.”

With meat this good you can take a leaf out of Gareth’s book and simply ‘slam in the lamb,’ unadorned. If you fancy something a little fancier for your Easter table, try this recipe which has the added bonus of being made the day before.

CANNON OF NORTH WALES LAMB EN CROUTE

Ingredients

(Serves 6)

1 whole cannon of lamb – ask your butcher. You’ll probably have to order it in advance

1 shallot, finely chopped

50g butter

150g wild mushrooms, finely chopped

Small handful each of chopped rosemary, mint, sage and parsley

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

10 slices prosciutto

500g pack puff pastry

Plain flour

1 beaten egg yolk, beaten with 1 tsp water

Heat a splash of olive oil in a wide pan. Season the lamb all over and fry it in the pan, making sure it gets a bit of colour all over it (about 2 minutes). Then put the lamb aside to cool.

Fry the chopped shallot in the butter in the same pan for 2 minutes, then add the chopped mushrooms and cook until both are soft. Then add the garlic and herbs, season with salt and pepper and cook for another 2 minutes, then leave to cool.

This is the slightly tricky part: cover your biggest chopping board with cling film. Lay the slices of prosciutto on the cling film in two rows, slightly overlapping. Carefully spread the mushroom mixture over the prosciutto, then sit the lamb on top in the centre. Take the cling film by the edges and lift it to draw the prosciutto around the fillet mixture, then

roll it into a sausage shape, twisting the ends of cling film to tighten it as you go. Put that in the fridge.

Now dust your board with a little flour. Roll out a third of the pastry to an 10 x 30cm strip about 2mm thick and place on a non-stick baking sheet. Roll out the remainder of the pastry to about 20 x 30cm, also 2mm thick. Unwrap your prosciutto-wrapped fillet and place it in the centre of the smaller strip of pastry. Brush the pastry’s edges with the egg mix. Then gently lower the larger pastry sheet onto the lamb fillet and tuck it underneath the pastry base. Trim any excess pastry way – you could use them to make pastry shapes to put on top if you like. The lamb should now be completely wrapped in pastry. Brush the whole thing with the beaten egg, then put it all in the fridge overnight and forget about your troubles.

The next day, preheat the oven to 180˚C FAN. Leave the lamb out for half an hour, then brush the pastry with a little more egg yolk and cook it for 20 minutes. Let it rest for 10 minutes before bringing it to the table to a round of applause. n

Cywain Celebrates Female Business Team’s Success

Cywain recently marked International Women's Day by celebrating its team of female Regional Growth Managers who are driving business support for food and drink companies across Wales.

Facilitated by Mentera, Cywain is a Welsh government-funded programme that provides bespoke support and advice to startups and growth orientated food and drink businesses in Wales.

Cywain's clients benefit from tailored support – including advice on marketing, developing business plans, 1-2-1 mentoring, test trading opportunities, study tours, webinars, and grants for branding and packaging. Pivotal to delivering that support is Cywain's all-female team of ten Regional Growth Managers, who work hand-in-hand with producers to help them grow their enterprises and boost the Welsh economy.

Mentera Director Manon Llwyd Rowlands said: "On International Women's Day, we celebrated our strong team of empowering female Regional Growth Managers. As experienced practitioners in the food and drink industry, they are equipped with the latest market data and trend knowledge, enabling them to develop client growth with a personable, local approach.”

Over the past seven years, Cywain has supported more than 1,200 businesses – helping them reach over a thousand new markets for their products. In the process, Cywain’s support has helped create over 400 jobs in Wales.

LOUISE MCNUTT – Regional Growth Manager (North Wales)

A good working environment is crucial to success, and when Louise joined Cywain during lockdown in November 2020, she found the readily available support of her colleagues vital. "Cywain and Mentera is a very supportive environment, and as a team, we help each other, which gives us a lot of empathy with our clients,” she explained. “Also, as a predominantly female team, we are particularly aware of the challenges many women business owners face.”

Support offered to clients takes many forms, including attending events such as trade shows, where not only the product but also the person has to come to the fore. "Trade and consumer shows are fun, but going there for the first time can be a bit daunting for some people,” Louise

continued. “Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and different skill sets, and at events such as the Royal Welsh Show or the Farm Shop and Deli Show, people's soft skills need to come into play. So, in addition to training them on the practical and legal aspects of trading, we try to give them that confidence boost, so they make the most of the experience."

FFION JONES – Regional Growth Manager (Ceredigion and South Powys)

After several years working in the brewing industry – in Wales and New Zealand – Ffion joined Cywain at the end of 2019. She sees parallels between the brewing world and the wider food and drink industry, particularly a shared collaboration spirit – a key part of Cywain’s business ethos. She says the support afforded to Welsh food and drink businesses is envied by producers outside of Wales.

“When I am at events, I hear people say they are surprised how much support there is available for producers in Wales. That support, and emphasis on Welsh food and drink, shows its importance to our economy and Wales’ image globally.”

Ffion has also been helping to identify and nurture burgeoning food and drink businesses from the wider community in Wales by collaborating with The Centre for African Entrepreneurship (CAE), a charity that empowers and supports ethnically diverse communities, specifically migrants, by providing a bespoke and person-centred service that meets their individual needs. n

Food and drink businesses in Wales can access support from Cywain by contacting via email: cywain@mentera.cymru or visit the website cywain.cymru to read more about the tailored support that's available.

Meet the chefs behind the fantastic menu at the new Savvy Fox Pub at Hotel Wrexham…

Wes Reilly, Head Chef

Wesley took over as head chef at the Savvy Fox Pub at Hotel Wrexham in August. Prior to this appointment, he was running the Countess of Chester Hospital’s kitchen and had previously worked for the Harvester chain, as well as Café Rouge and Yo! Sushi. This is his first role as head chef for a hotel and he is loving the different challenges and opportunities that working within this type of business brings.

Wesley was part of the team that brought the Savvy Fox’s new menu to launch back in November last year, alongside hospitality consultant/executive chef Lee Adams. A mix of pub classics reimagined with a ‘Savvy’

Dave Griffiths, chef

Dave has been at the venue for ten years and was part of the previous kitchen team at Rafters, before the hotel came under new ownership.

“I really enjoy the Sunday lunches, they are amazing,” says Dave. “It was a carvery previously,

Dilwyn Jones, head chef

twist, coupled with hearty comfort foods and signature dishes ensure there is something for everyone.

“We were here for day one of the launch,” explains Wes. “We did all of the prep, and it was great to see it all come together. The new menu has been really popular. The lamb shank pie is definitely a favourite with the customers. It's the visual element and the presentation that makes it stand out. It's something different that no one else is doing at the minute and it has become a signature dish. My personal favourite is the linguine. It is just that smell of garlic and chili with the lemon zest, it’s gorgeous. We’re currently designing the next menu for April time and we’re looking forward to introducing that.”

so I would be out on the carvery but it’s a lot easier to keep the highest quality now that it’s plated. The numbers of people coming here are going up, which shows that the Sunday lunches are getting more popular now and that word spreading about just how good the food is. The feedback we’re getting is consistently good as well.”

Dilwyn is the head chef at The Chester Townhouse, one of new owner Steven Hesketh’s other properties, and since the redevelopment of Hotel Wrexham, he has been helping out with the kitchen team at The Savvy Fox. He has worked in kitchens for over 30 years, starting at the age of 13 and has been with Steven for the past five years.

Joe Barkley, line chef

Joe has worked at The Savvy Fox for five months. Prior to working at Hotel Wrexham, Joe was a chef at Plas Coch.

“The people I work with make the atmosphere nice, and I love cooking,” says Joe. “I love the food that we serve here, it’s a nice feeling to serve food to our guests that I want to eat myself. The steaks and

“The linguine is my favourite dish, the ingredients are so fresh and it’s quite a simple dish, but it tastes amazing,” comments Dilwyn. “I love my seafood so the fish and chips is another dish that I really like cooking, the twist of having the lemon and thyme in the batter adds that something extra. In terms of desserts, the Eton Mess is lovely – and you can’t beat a sticky toffee pudding, it’s a classic isn’t it?”

the seabass are really popular dishes. I really enjoy coming here to eat on my days off. I love a rib eye steak – it’s 100% the best steak to get. I like to have it with some peppercorn sauce, sometimes with a Scotch egg as a starter and a pint of Wrexham lager.

The brownies are my top dessert, they’re the best, I’ve tried most of the desserts and they definitely come out on top.”

Tanners Patrono Fine Ruby

Port £15.50

A great entry into port, this is made for Tanners by David Guimaraens, winemaker for Fonseca and Taylor’s. Soft, not too sweet, and juicily fruity, this is great on its own or with a hard cheese like cheddar.

Niepoort Unfiltered Late Bottled

Vintage 2019 £27

Niepoort are one of my favourite producers, and their LBV is one of the finest available. Aged in large oak barrels for around five years, then bottled unfiltered and unfined, to give incredible flavour, texture and drinkability..

Noval 10-Year-Old Tawny Port £29.50

Tawny port is my ‘go-to’ when there is a cheeseboard on offer. It’s very difficult to match soft cheeses in particular with more robust ruby ports, so the soft, nutty, figgy notes of tawny work much better. Serve chilled!

April 23rd is an important date in the wine diary. It is St George’s Day, which is also the date that Port houses decide if they will declare whether they will be bottling a full vintage port. What does that mean? Full vintage ports aren’t made every year; typically, it is around three times a decade, although five were declared in the 2010’s. If the weather has been kind (not too hot, not too cool, not too wet) then Port producers will decide if they are going to produce a wine from the previous year’s grapes.

Vintage ports are the top of the tree, and even in a declared year only account for a very small proportion of overall production. They are made from the best grapes, in the best vineyards, and do most of their ageing in bottle. At their best they offer unrivalled complexity, silkiness, length and an ability to age for decades, over 100 years for the very best vintages. Remember, port isn’t just for Christmas though! Entry level Ruby and Late Bottled Vintage ports are fantastic value for money, and white port is gaining in popularity, especially as a refreshing long drink with tonic, mint and lime. An old favourite is very much keeping up with the times!

Graham’s Quinta dos Malvedos, Vintage Port 2012 £42

Single quinta ports are made in the years that a full declaration isn’t made, from the best vineyard sites. This makes them terrific value for money, with perhaps slightly less complexity and ability to age as a full vintage. This is a great example, full of spicy forest fruit notes and ready to drink now.

Churchill’s, Vintage Port 2007 £92.00

One of the newest Port Houses, Churchill’s were set up in 1981 by Johnny Graham of the eponymous family. 2007 was a magnificent year for port, and although this will be ready for drinking soon, I would age this for another 20 years. Dense, intense and almost savoury.

Churchill’s White Port, Dry Aperitif £28

White ports are made the same way as red port, just from white grapes. They are gaining popularity, and this floral, nutty port is excellent both on its own or served with tonic to make a refreshing alternative to a G&T. Not too sweet, and make sure you serve it cold.

breathtaking Create a space

Llandudno’s dining landscape recently reached new heights with the opening of The Goat Bar & Restaurant. Now a breathtaking space that brings new life to the town’s iconic Esplanade Hotel that sits pride of place on the scenic promenade.

This £500K transformation was led by architectural and construction specialists SB4 Group with the creative vision of Design House Wales at its heart.

Design House Wales thoughtfully curated an interior that balances modern sophistication with inviting charm. SB4 Group used its craftsmanship, expertise and meticulous attention to detail to bring the space to life with its team working to deliver a seamless blend of contemporary elegance with a warm, welcoming coastal atmosphere. The result? A stylish bar, a thoughtfully designed restaurant, and an expansive outdoor area – all offering breath taking views of the North Welsh coastline.

Reflecting on this remarkable transformation, Anthony Litchfield of SB4 Group shares: “We are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. The collaboration between our team and the visionary design approach from Design House Wales has truly redefined this space.”

Hannah Jones, Founder of Design House Wales, expresses her excitement: “Seeing The Goat come to life has been an incredible journey. This space is a testament to the power of teamwork – enhancing not just aesthetics, but the entire dining experience.”

SEEING THE GOAT COME TO LIFE HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY. THIS SPACE IS A TESTAMENT TO THE POWER OF TEAMWORK – ENHANCING NOT JUST AESTHETICS, BUT THE ENTIRE DINING EXPERIENCE
A remarkable transformation by Design House Wales and SB4…

Owner Shon Morgans adds his enthusiasm, “With the exceptional work of SB4 Group and Design House Wales, we’ve created a destination where great food and drinks, welcoming service, and a vibrant atmosphere come together for an unforgettable experience in one of Llandudno’s iconic and dearly loved venues.”

Projects such as The Goat always start with a sense of place and have a narrative running through them. Here Llandudno’s legendary Kashmiri goats take centre stage. Residents of the Great Orme these personable goats drift down to graze in town, often in the smartest gardens.

Imported over 100 years ago, the goats of Llandudno play a vital ecological role in the region. Their grazing habits help maintain the delicate balance of the local ecosystem, preventing vegetation from becoming overgrown and promoting biodiversity. Their symbiotic relationship with the land underscores the intricate connection between nature and community.

The Goat Bar & Restaurant picks up the connection between nature and a coastal community. Coastal ease is reflected with the whitewashed oak core and open plan as if you are sharing someone’s kitchen or dining space. The Goat targets a wide clientele, whether you have just walked off the beach or desire a more formal gastro experience. Breathtaking elegance is combined beautifully with relaxed charm. n

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

HELP IS ON HAND FOR VITAL SUCCESSION PLANNING TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF YOUR FARM

Having a succession plan in place is essential for the smooth transition of any business, avoiding the potential of operational disruptions, financial challenges and disputes.

Succession planning is especially important when managing a farm, but is often put on the backburner – sometimes until it is too late. However, support is on offer to farming families across Wales in the form of financial grants and professional advice to help kickstart those sensitive conversations and plan for the future.

The Farming Connect scheme is available to any farm business in Wales with at least three hectares of land, and a panel of law firms, such as Lanyon Bowdler which has an office in Conwy, are on hand to provide advice.

Sioned Williams, a private client solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler, explains how the process works in a recent episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast with Einir Davies, head of skills at Mentera, which works with farmers through Farming Connect.

“Succession is actually quite a big threat to the viability of a farming business if it isn’t done correctly, so we have expanded the level of support, which is more important now than ever following the Government’s announcement regarding Inheritance Tax reforms,” she explains. “We have split the support pathway into three key steps, starting with a succession review, which is an initial assessment of your business assets in conjunction with a law firm who can

assess whether any further advice is needed.”

If the review identifies that further support is required, Farming Connect can fund up to £1,400 worth of advice for a solicitor to work with the farm over a number of months to draw up a succession plan. The second step then involves looking at Wills and investigating Inheritance Tax issues in more detail based on the land and asset valuations from the initial research.

As part of the process, Farming Connect can facilitate meetings – often bringing everyone around the kitchen table - to navigate those awkward conversations which many families keep putting off.

Sioned says: “Having a neutral third party to manage these meetings really does work well because a lot of families find it difficult to have these conversations. Some people may already have had some discussions but not with the wider family, so it’s just a good way of getting everyone on the same page before taking any formal actions.”

The third and final step in the process involves Farming Connect providing funding to actually implement the succession plan, which may involve drafting a new Will, Lasting Powers of Attorney or transferring assets to ensure everything is as tax efficient as possible. n

Grease Goes Great Guns

Performing Arts has always been a mainstay of the St David’s College experience, and this year is no exception as pupils took to the stage last month with their production of Grease the musical.

Theatr Colwyn was packed to the rafters during the four-show run, as people queued up to see the exceptional theatrical talent for which the school has developed a deserved reputation. It was easy to forget that this was a school production: vibrant, energetic, and with an immediacy that the film could be accused of lacking, this show was an explosion of colour, music and vitality. And at every level pupils were front and centre. On stage, in the live band and even behind the scenes – with two Year 7 technicians flawlessly executing light and sound – pupils performed incredibly and delighted the near sell-out audiences. A huge achievement and well-deserving of the nightly standing ovations.

Access Affordable Personal Training

THE COST OF HEALTH IS PRICELESS, DISCOVER A REASONABLE SOLUTION TO MEET YOUR BUDGET.

The price of personal training varies depending on location and experience and it may seem like a lot to pay. Think of the investment in terms of what value you put on your overall health, and what your health will look like later on in life if you neglect it now.

Working with a PT (Personal Trainer) offers unique workout plans, a focus on cardiovascular health, strength & flexibility, advice on nutrition and lifestyle variables, addresses mental health, and provides accountability and inspiration. When these tactics are combined, overall health improves noticeably.

At The Department of Fit we want more people to have access to training and have the support needed throughout your fitness journey.

Explore these options on how The Department of Fit can offer reasonably priced training:

J Efficiency and Effectiveness – Although a PT may be expensive, it might be more affordable than other exercise options. A PT will optimise and customise your workout, saving time and effort over the long term. You can have a gym membership, but efficient training is what helps you achieve your goals.

J Long Term Value and Progression – We will assist you in acquiring the knowledge on the fundamentals of exercise, training methods and nutrition, empowering you to take charge of your training progress once your training sessions

THE DEPARTMENT OF FIT

are over. This long term-value offers advantages above and beyond the initial investment.

J Prevention of errors and accidents – By working with a PT, learning the optimal workout form, technique and execution early on, you can lower your chance of injury and setbacks. This ultimately saves on rehabilitation time and costs.

J Flexible Sessions and Packages – We offer a variety of training options to meet various training demands and budgets. Alternatives to individualised training, are small group sessions and online training packages that could fit your budget.

J Cheaper Options – Individual, in-person sessions are your most costly. Explore more affordable options such as small group sessions or online training. Small groups sessions help split the expense whilst getting individualised attention and direction. Online training can be a 1-2-1 video call session or training via our app where you follow a program remotely, with regular check-ins with your PT.

We are all at different stages, with varying degrees of training knowledge. Consider your baseline knowledge and training needs when choosing a training structure or program to match this and your budget. n

Addressing Missing Teeth

Tooth loss affects far more than just your smile – it can impact your daily life in ways you might not expect. Eating your favourite foods can become challenging, social interactions might leave you feeling self-conscious, and over time, these subtle changes can significantly affect your confidence and overall quality of life.

Traditionally, for patients with few or no healthy teeth remaining, removable dentures were the primary solution. While they might initially appear cost-effective, dentures can present ongoing challenges. Because they depend on suction, adhesives, or metal clasps to stay in place, dentures often become loose, uncomfortable, and even painful, leading to sore spots and irritation. Moreover, they do nothing to prevent the jawbone from shrinking, which can result in a prematurely aged or sunken facial appearance.

Fortunately, modern dentistry has revolutionised the way we approach full-arch tooth replacement. Dental implants provide a secure, long-lasting alternative to traditional dentures. An implant acts like an artificial tooth root made from biocompatible titanium, which integrates naturally with your jawbone. When multiple implants support a complete arch of new teeth, patients regain stability, comfort, and confidence. Additionally, implants stimulate the jawbone, preserving your facial structure and preventing bone loss.

Historically, one significant drawback of full-arch implant treatment was the waiting period between implant placement

and receiving functional replacement teeth – often several months. However, advancements in dental technology have brought us the innovative "same-day teeth" solution. Eligible patients can now walk into West End Dental and leave that very day with their dental implants placed and a set of natural-looking, fully functional provisional teeth securely attached.

At West End Dental, their highly skilled clinical team has decades of experience transforming smiles throughout North Wales. With practices conveniently located in Colwyn Bay, Porthmadog, Llangefni, and now Prestatyn, they have successfully treated tens of thousands of satisfied patients, restoring their smiles, comfort, and confidence.

If you're tired of struggling with loose dentures, embarrassed about your smile, or simply want to enjoy life without worrying about your teeth, it’s time to consider same-day full-arch dental implants. Take the first step by booking a free consultation with their experienced dental implant team. West End Dental are dedicated to providing personalized, comfortable, and advanced dental solutions that help you reclaim your confidence and quality of life.

Don’t let tooth loss hold you back any longer – transform your smile and your life with same-day dental implants. n

Choose NWESC for your eye procedures

A macular hole is a small break in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It usually occurs due to age-related changes in the eye, particularly in people over 60. The gel-like substance in the eye, called the vitreous, can shrink and pull on the macula, creating a hole. Symptoms include blurry or distorted central vision, a dark spot in the middle of vision, and difficulty reading or recognizing faces. Peripheral (side) vision remains unaffected. A macular hole does not cause total blindness, but it can severely impact central vision if left untreated. Treatment usually involves a vitrectomy, a surgery where the vitreous is removed and replaced with a gas bubble to help the macula heal. Recovery may require keeping the head in a facedown position for some time. Early diagnosis improves outcomes, so see an eye doctor if you notice symptoms! www.northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

Can I have an Eco-Friendly Funeral?

As more people seek ways to reduce their environmental footprint, sustainability in funerals is becoming an important topic. At Tom Owen and Son, we are committed to offering eco-friendly options, but navigating this path isn’t always straightforward. There can be a lot of misleading information and ‘green washing’, with some choices not as sustainable as they appear.

In this article, we’ll explore the real challenges of having a true green funeral, look at practical steps you can take and how we’re making a difference, so you can make an informed choice when planning a funeral.

Is a truly green funeral possible?

Some funeral products are marketed as eco-friendly but independent research is limited, particularly on the environmental impact of coffins. Most studies have been funded by coffin manufacturers, making it difficult to get an unbiased view. In 2013, we donated towards a crowdfunded independent research project into sustainability of coffins in burial and cremation. The full report was published by Planet Mark.

How we’re making funerals more sustainable

While a completely ‘zero-carbon’ funeral may not yet be possible, here’s what we’ve been doing to make a meaningful difference:

J Choosing sustainable coffins

The type of coffin you choose significantly impacts the environmental footprint of a funeral. We work with coffin providers that don’t use unnecessary packaging in delivery. Some of the options we offer include the Loop Living Cocoon – a revolutionary coffin made from mycelium which can biodegrade within 45 days and enrich the soil, willow and bamboo coffins which are natural, fast-growing, biodegradable and made within the UK and finally, cardboard coffins which offer a simple and low impact choice for both burial and cremation.

J No routine embalming

Many funeral homes routinely embalm as part of their process but embalming uses toxic chemicals that can disturb the eco system within a burial. We don’t routinely embalm unless it’s truly necessary.

J Using renewable energy and recycling

We are actively working to reduce our carbon footprint and have recently installed solar panels at our funeral home. This means much of our energy comes from a renewable source helping to cut down on emissions. We also recycle as much as possible to avoid sending to landfill.

J Funeral transport and stationery

Even small changes can make a difference. We print our service booklets using recycled paper and encourage only printing enough for one between two. We will look at lower emission transport options once our vehicles are due to be

replaced, but in the meantime we ensure car sharing for funeral bearers.

J Sustainable floral tributes

You can opt for locally grown, seasonal flowers. Many florists now offer fully biodegradable funeral tributes, opting not to use floral foam, or you can create a tribute made of vegetables!

How you can plan a greener funeral

If sustainability is important to you, here are some practical steps you can take when planning a funeral:

J Opt for a biodegradable coffin

J Say no to embalming or hygienic treatments are they are sometimes referred to

J Choose a natural burial ground such as The Eternal Forest, Boduan

J Limit vehicle use where possible

J Use eco-friendly flowers

J Consider asking for memorial donations instead of flowers to support local charities

A greener goodbye is possible

While funeral traditions are deeply personal, small changes can make a big impact on our planet. We’re committed to helping families make informed choices while offering genuine, sustainable options. If you’d like to discuss planning an ecofriendly funeral, we’d love to help. n
