The only way to access Anglesey’s fantastic Llanddwyn Island is by foot – but it’s a walk worth taking! It is vital however that you check the tide times before visiting the island, as well as the weather forecast – as the location of Llanddwyn is extremely exposed. This small island has plenty of history as well as stunning views and, if you’re exceptionally lucky, then you may just catch a sunset like this one.

The great day out!

Be aware that the majority of North Wales attractions now require you to book online before you arrive. This is to ensure that visitor numbers are controlled, therefore enabling social distancing. So please make sure that you always book in advance!

August is here and along with the sunshine (we’re ever hopeful here at North Wales Mag HQ!) comes the great North Walian day out…

You don’t need us to tell you how many days you have been cooped up at home, nor do you need us to tell you that you can now go and have a much-needed day out! What we can tell you of course is what our favourite attractions now have on offer. Many of the attractions in North Wales have a slightly reduced offer for obvious reasons, but they are all promising a safe, clean and entertaining day out.

Gypsy Wood Family Park is open until 27th September

A prime example is Snowdon Railway which opened on the 10th July however, after careful consideration, it will not open the summit building ‘Hafod Eryri’ for the 2020 season. This decision is based on the difficult practicalities of trying to implement safe social distancing measures within the building. It has also made the decision not to operate its Heritage Steam Service for 2020 and will instead focus on its Traditional Diesel Service throughout the summer. Significant internal adjustments have been made to the carriages which enable safe segregation between compartments and reduced passenger numbers. The destination for the remaining 2020 season will be Clogwyn Station, which is three quarters distance to the summit of Snowdon. The journey time to Clogwyn is approximately 45 minutes and

or on-board the trains. The service represents approximately a two-hour experience overall so it’s still a fabulous way to visit Snowdon. Greenwood is also ready and waiting for you and your family to explore once again. Go and escape for the day in its gigantic playground nestled under the trees and full of the same old amusement, magic and mischief. While the park will very much look the same, Greenwood has put in place some new measures to keep you and your family as safe as it possibly can, so make sure that you visit its website for more information. The team can’t wait to welcome you back to its safe haven in the great outdoors – and its has even reduced its admission price for this summer too! Another family friendly day out is Gypsy Wood Park, which is open to visitors until 27th September. Some things will seem a little different at the Park for the next few months, but the usual friendly Gypsy Wood welcome will still be waiting for you. There aren’t many places where you can combine the magic of fairies with the charm of animals and the rugged wilderness of 20 acres of beautiful natural woodland, but a day out at Gypsy Wood Park promises just that. There are loads of things to see and do at this outdoor park in the foothills of Snowdonia and, as as result it’s a must-see attraction for all animal, nature, outdoor, train and fairy lovers. However, please note that Gypsy Wood Park is currently open for advance ticket purchases only.

Animal lovers should also take the time to visit Manorafon in Abergele this summer. The park will be packed with oodles of fun from feeding the animals, whizzing around on the quad bikes, discovering the reptiles in The Reptile Hut, playing in the new tunnel play area and racing the family on the go-karts. Manorafon’s new socially-distant animal handling allows the whole family chance to get up close and say hello to cute baby bunnies and guineapigs. Meanwhile ‘The Beach’ is returning,

LOVING LOCAL If lockdown has taught us anything it’s that our local community is absolutely vital. So, now that the shops are open once again, make sure that you put your money where your mouth is and shop local.

Shopping locally really does make a huge difference to your local economy. When we buy from a North Wales shop our money stays in the region – and it strengthens the local economy in two ways. Firstly, buying local keeps money circulating within North Wales – studies have shown that local businesses recirculate a greater share of every pound within their area as they create locally owned supply chains. And, secondly, buying local also fuels new employment and job opportunities for people within our community. What’s even better is that shopping locally is one of the easiest ways to support your community. So, if you’re heading out with a shopping list in hand, just take a moment to think about which shops are locally owned and head there first. Simple! A prime example of how a local store is competing with a national chain is Petplace. The company has five stores across North Wales, and it is your local one-stop-shop for all your pet needs. Petplace hosts a full range of everyday essentials, and more specialised products, across its eight departments. You can find everything you need within its stores from feed for your visiting hedgehogs to winter rugs for your horse. All of the stores now have social distancing measures in place, along with

a customer flow control system installed to all its entrances, so it is also a safe place to shop as well as a convenient one. Another local brand that is rivaling the big boys is Clares of Llandudno. This local department store has had a reputation for high quality products and exceptional customer service since it opened its doors in 1927. Here, in the heart of Llandudno, you can shop for a stylish range of womens and menswear with all your favourite brands such as GANT, Seasalt and White Stuff. Clare’s has everything you need for any occasion with a team to help you find that perfect outfit. You can also shop a wide range of top brands to cook up a storm in the kitchen, including

Artisan Market brings you the very best makers, bakers, artists and creators in North Wales. Running on the third Saturday of the month, the market enables you to shop local, eat well and buy handmade. This is a fun family event with live music and entertainment that can be found on Station Road in Colwyn Bay. Another community day and craft market will be operating in Prestatyn on 31st August. This one is operated by Phoenix Events Wales which, sadly, has had its list of events decimated by the global pandemic. “Like so many other businesses, we have had to look at different

ways to keep going,” explains John C McGowan of Phoenix Events Wales. “We have decided to try to help our stall holders and local businesses alike, by holding this community day and craft market to try to showcase everything that Prestatyn and the local community has to offer after such a hard time on local businesses.” With the kind permission of Prestatyn Town Football Club (Bastion Gardens) the event will take place on the August bank holiday Monday from 10.30am to 3.30pm and offers free entry to the public. “We intend to have a number of local businesses advertising their wares as well as local artisans to showcase themselves, while allowing the local businesses to build again after the pandemic,” continues John. “So far we have bouncy castles, an inflatable obstacle course, an ice cream van, craft and artisan stalls and a range of local charities in attendance, such as NCAR, Prestatyn Hedgehog Rescue, Community First Responders and Wales Air Ambulance.” So you can see how North Wales is home to an extremely diverse range of shops and independent brands. OF THE

Month

The English Garden If you spent the majority of lockdown in your garden soaking up the sun, then you might want to try this wee tipple to remind you what summer felt like! It’s a gorgeous gin cocktail, full of the flavour of an English (or Welsh!) garden. Hendrick’s gin in particular is a good fit for this recipe as it’s very smooth, with flavours of rose and cucumber… INGREDIENTS • 50ml gin • 75ml pressed apple juice • 25ml elderflower cordial • 25ml freshly squeezed lime juice • Cucumber slices, for garnishing Method 1. Place ice into a glass 2. Pour over the gin 3. Pour over the apple juice, elderflower and fresh lime juice 4. Stir gently 5. Add cucumber slices to garnish

IN THE MIX

Of course, if you’d rather sit back and relax while somebody mixed your ideal cocktail for you, then why not visit Sheldon’s in Colwyn Bay? From a Margarita to a Mojito, it has quite the cocktail selection and is quickly becoming the place to go for cocktails in North Wales. 01492 339821 www.sheldonsbar.co.uk

Hello everyone, welcome back! Although we have tried our best to find a way to keep the shop open and continue to source and supply your favourite and new wines, life has been different. We have missed writing these articles and sharing our thoughts. We have missed passing on first hand our advice and knowledge. Tasting wines and sharing experiences. A very big thank you to everyone who has shown us and all of the other local businesses and attractions support during these difficult times. It is impossible to say how much of a lifeline it has provided, and how it truly reinforces the unique community that we have in North Wales that we all pulled together in difficult and unusual times. Scavolini is venturing into the bedroom for its latest launch: the walk-in wardrobe. The key to Scavolini’s walk-in wardrobe is that it makes the best use of whatever space you have available. The 61cm-deep modular system comprises a load-bearing side panel that can be configured in a straight run or into a corner. To this, the Fluida open shelves are attached along with a range of new accessories, including a sliding clothes rack, pull-out frame, storage drawers, trouser rack and shoe rack. Lacquered, Stopsol or smokedglass doors can be added as required, illuminated by built-in LED lights. And there is a something to tone with all colour schemes too, with a choice of five elegant finishes: pure white, seagull grey, iron grey, garden walnut and nuance larch. The idea is that the Scavolini walk-wardrobe is personal to the needs of each individual and their clothes. www.scavolini.com

News Families advised on alternative to court for legal issues A North Wales-based solicitor is highlighting a quicker, less expensive, method of resolving family law issues as courts battle to clear the backlog of cases caused by the Covid-19 crisis. Caroline York, of Lanyon Bowdler’s family law team in Conwy, says the increasing workload has resulted in more delays for the court and parties involved, additional costs and disappointment for clients who needed to see a satisfactory conclusion to their case as quickly as possible.

BBQ is back on the menu in Rhos-on-Sea

Wales’s favourite smokehouse re-opened its garden last month to the relief of fans from far and wide. Hickory’s, which is based in Rhoson-Sea has been delighting guests for almost eight years with its unique mix of authentic food, dazzling drinks and southern-style hospitality. The site, which boasts a stunning garden which comes complete with covered dining ‘huts’ and a children’s activity area, has made some subtle changes to the layout and added some extra seating outdoors to comply with government guidance without losing any of the much-loved Hickory’s vibe. “We’ve got some absolutely amazing guests and lots of loyal regulars here in Rhos and they have all been nothing less than incredible,” said Hickory’s GM Craig Gibson. “We opened a little later than some of our sister sites over the border and so the team were literally chomping at the bit to swing open the doors again. It’s been really humbling to see so many people coming out to support us.” hickorys.co.uk

LLANDUDNO’S GREAT ORME Llandudno is the largest seaside town in Wales with a population of around 21,000. It was much loved by the Victorians and Edwardians, and as long ago as 1861 was being called ‘The Queen of the Welsh watering places’ with the word ‘resort’ not being in common use until a lot later. It is still popular today and offers lots of walking possibilities along the seafront and the surrounding footpath network. However, it is the Great Orme, which lies north west of the main town

IT investment for Rydal Penrhos Rydal Penrhos has announced a significant investment regarding IT. The school has been working on developing this particular area to improve pupils’ learning and it will see some impressive changes across Rydal Penrhos’ prep and senior sites. All current servers will be replaced by more modern equipment, with the new engine of the school network being future-proofed for at least seven years, given the anticipated developments in hardware and software. This introduction will allow Rydal Penrhos to access the new version of iSAMS that will improve parent-teacher communications considerably. Another exciting part of this investment will see each pupil from Year 3 to 13 provided with their own iPad, together with a keyboard, electronic pencil and cover for daily use both during school lessons and for homework tasks. These new iPads are intended for lesson use in school, but the investment also has the possibility to facilitate remote online learning in the event of a second lockdown. “We believe that these investments will have a marked improvement on the educational opportunities for Rydal Penrhos pupils and on their personal and academic progress,” commented John Waszek, Executive Principal of Rydal Penrhos. “Alongside this investment in equipment and software, training for teaching and support staff will ensure that pupils can continue to be taught by well-trained staff.” rydalpenrhos.com

I work with victims to enable them to progress towards re-establishing their lives and move forward to better life opportunities. Some victims I support are able to access a refuge, a safe breathing space where decisions can be made free from pressure and fear. Lisinayte, who is originally from Sao Tome and Principe, is a first-language Portuguese speaker and is adding her Glyndwr Masters studies to a degree in Social Work she gained in Portugal. In the past few months, she has also been juggling her work and studies alongside helping people from the Portuguese community. “I have been helping as much I can - taking into consideration all the safety measures regarding coronavirus. It’s better to maintain a diplomatic silence than challenge an easily irritated authority figure. Expressing your creative side attracts attention and praise on the 16th. Your chances of winning a type of competition are extremely high on the 19th, thanks to a supportive New Moon.

Libra (September 24th – October 23rd) A manipulative relative will try to undermine your confidence at the start of August; turn a deaf ear to their backhanded compliments and don’t let them get to you. Your best friend or romantic partner may tease you about your family ties on the 4th; don’t let them make you ashamed of heart-warming traditions. The New Moon on the 19th is perfect for joining a team.

Taurus (April 21st – May 21st) Beware of venting your anger on an innocent bystander as July makes way for August; practising a little compassion and understanding will make a difficult situation much more tolerable. After an exciting rollercoaster ride, your personal life will settle down starting on the 15th. Having friends in high places pays off on the 18th, when a connection brings exciting news.

Scorpio (October 24th – November 22nd) Avoid heaping criticism on someone at work or in your social circle at the start of August. Don’t get drawn into an argument with a colleague on the 13th; professional plotting and in-fighting will make it impossible to work effectively together. The New Moon on the 19th is ideal for embarking on a fresh career path or applying for and accepting another job.

Gemini (May 22nd – June 21st) The opening days of August are not a good time to negotiate a financial deal; wait until you are less emotional to discuss money. Collaborating on a creative project will be rewarding on the 17th, when you’ll work with some stimulating and exciting people. The New Moon on the 19th is perfect for planning to do something exciting and unusual.

Sagittarius (November 23rd – December 21st) Trying to control people with money at the start of August will only lead to resentment and disappointment; show respect for people, value them and they will return the compliment. An impromptu trip for pleasure on the 16th brings out the best in you. If you’re single, you will meet someone exciting on this vacation.

Cancer (June 22nd – July 23rd) Don’t let your best friend or romantic partner influence an important decision about your personal life at the start of August; it’s important to follow your instincts at this critical time. By the 13th, you might decide to leave a job that is putting too many demands on you. The New Moon on the 19th is ideal for marketing an entertaining app, service or product.

Capricorn (December 22nd – January 20th) Don’t try to impose your views and values on a friend, relative or loved one as July makes way for August. The Full Moon on the 3rd causes you to reassess your financial situation and create a tighter, more efficient budget. On the 19th, the New Moon will bring a financial windfall, allowing you to take an expensive course that has caught your eye.

Leo (July 24th – August 23rd) An unpredictable personality wreaks havoc on your personal life on the 1st. You might be expected to cancel plans to cater to your employer’s whims. People will be more receptive to your ideas starting on the 5th; seize this opportunity to make a sales pitch or professional presentation. The New Moon on the 19th is ideal for a DIY top-to-toe makeover.

Aquarius (January 21st – February 19th) Domestic upheavals could take a toll on a close relationship at the start of August; sit down with a relative or romantic partner and find an easier and more productive way to organise your household. A romantic encounter on the 16th will erase all doubts about a relationship while an engagement or marriage could be announced on the 19th.

Virgo (August 24th – September 23rd) Don’t let a romantic partner put you down or pour scorn on your interests at the start of the month; you are quite right to be proud of your hobbies and intellectual pursuits. Keep plans to yourself starting on the 5th; there’s no reason to give rivals a peek at a creative strategy. On the 19th, the New Moon inspires you to take a relaxing break, kick back and put your feet up.

Pisces (February 20th – March 20th) The Full Moon on the 3rd will bring some unpleasant secrets to light; you’ll look at a relative or neighbour in an entirely different light. A moneymaking opportunity is worth checking out on the 16th, even if the competition is stiff. A dream job could be offered to you on the 19th, courtesy of an enriching New Moon.
