The Big Picture This image was taken by Martin of Martin Vaughan Photography on his way back from photographing a wonderful wedding of local farmers whose land lies on the banks of the straits. He was returning home and, on the approach to Caernarfon, came around the corner to be presented with this incredible view. So, despite having just put the cameras away, he got back out of the car to capture it. “It’s of Caernarfon harbour and what stopped us in our tracks was the light,” says Martin. “We felt it could be anywhere in the world and if people saw it with fresh eyes – the people sitting drinking outside, the little boats in the harbour, the lights on the water – they would appreciate the sheer beauty of North Wales once again.” www.martinvaughanphotography.com

Celebrating

art in North Wales

North Wales is a region with a colourful cultural background that is widely celebrated. It continues to move forward and act as a trailblazer, producing some of the finest galleries and museum curations in the UK. Immerse yourself in all North Wales has to offer and lose yourself in these incredible venues.

MOSTYN Behind a traditional Edwardian façade, in the beautiful seaside town of Llandudno, is MOSTYN, the largest contemporary art gallery in Wales. Traditional spaces merged with stunning modern architecture house six galleries which present regularly changing exhibitions by artists and makers from Wales and across the world. Over the summer the gallery’s internationally renowned Open exhibition shows finalists selected from submissions from all over the world, with the winner receiving a large cash prize. Visitors are invited to vote for their favourite to win the £1,000 Audience Award. Many people don’t know that the gallery is a registered charity. Generating over half of its income from trusts, donations and commercial activities, income generated supports the exhibition and public engagement programmes. Upstairs is an independent café, recently under new management and fast becoming a popular place for coffee lovers. The light and airy ‘Oriel Café’ serves locally roasted coffee, hot and cold drinks, cakes and light lunches. There’s a treasure trove of contemporary craft and print this summer at MOSTYN shop. A new retail showcase ‘Discover & Explore’ features ceramics, glass, jewellery, printmaking and textiles from makers inspired by science and travel. Throughout the year, the shop presents a wide range of contemporary craft, supporting hundreds of independent artists and makers, many of them small businesses based in Wales. www.mostyn.org

4th, 11th, 18th, 25th August • 15th, 22nd September The modern-day Welsh Highland Railway uses a fleet of large, modern carriages - hauled by imposing BeyerGarratt steam locomotives from South Africa - on its line linking the towns of Porthmadog and Caernarfon, but this was not how the railway began its life...

'Journey into the Past' trains will start at our brand new station in Caernarfon, where you are welcomed by your host for the day before boarding an authentic 1920s train - with loco No.2 'Prince' (built in 1863) and three carriages that all ran on the original line.

Small trains with few carriages steamed between tiny rural halts and stations, to serve the local communities and slate industry. However, as that simple railway has now been closed for over seventy years, it can be hard to imagine what life was like around 100 years ago.

Leaving Caernarfon at 11:00, the train heads for Rhyd Ddu stopping at several stations and historic sites, as your on-train host points out places of interest along the way. There's also a chance to capture memories of your train as it steams past you for photographs.

Our heritage trains will take you back to those days when women wore long skirts, men wore bowler hats, when a train ride was often a rare Sunday treat after chapel, with a family picnic to enjoy in the afternoon...

The fare for the 24-mile round-trip ( Adults £46 Children £32 ) includes picnic lunch, tea/coffee and a souvenir booklet. Arrive back in Caernarfon at 16:30. We look forward to giving you a glimpse into the fascinating past of the Welsh Highland Railway. For more information - and to book your tickets see www.festrail.co.uk, visit either Caernarfon or Porthmadog Booking Office or you can telephone 01766 516024

flavours of the area through each opportunity.” www.tastenortheastwales.org

A Sicilian cook from North Wales is ditching plastic packaging to launch a new range of classic Italian meals contained in reusable pottery dishes. Marina Midolo, who set up her kitchen at her home in Cyffylliog, near Ruthin, will be unveiling her authentic lasagne made with homemade pasta at the Llangollen Food Festival in October. Marina initially concentrated on producing Italian sweets, cakes and savouries which are on sale at delicatessens, community shops and hotels across the region, and now she is looking to expand her product range but wants to ensure there is no plastic packaging involved. “Last year’s festival was fantastic and a real springboard that helped me get my food business better known,” said Marina, who launched her range with the help of a development grant from Denbighshire County Council. “My idea is to launch a new lasagne meal at this year’s festival. The meal will be prepared by me and will be sold uncooked. Customers can buy a pot which they then put in an oven for around 30 minutes and then eat the lasagne straight from the earthenware pot. The dish can then be returned to the point of purchase for the deposit to be refunded or the customer can keep the pot. But the main thing is there is simply no plastic packaging involved.” www.llangollenfoodfestival.com

Cream OF THE CROP We scooped, spooned, and licked our way around North Wales to find some of the best ice cream makers in the region… Although first invented in the fourth or fifth century B.C., ice cream has existed in something close to its current form since the 1500s. But recently, as consumer tastes have shifted towards buying locally-sourced produce, local ice cream makers have moved with the times and the traditional ice cream parlour is enjoying a renaissance. Made with world-famous Welsh milk, ice cream is a mainstay of the local economy and there is a flavour to suit every palate. North Wales offers a heart-melting array of ice cream parlours, packed with traditional and sometimes unusual flavours with a distinctly local twist. So with further ado, we tip our spoons to these and all other ice cream makers who are striving to churn the best ice cream and gelato one scoop at a time.

Chilly Cow Established in 2014 by Anna Taylor, Chilly Cow produces ice cream using fresh milk from the family farm in Ruthin, Denbighshire. The farm has been in the family for over 40 years and is nestled in the foothills of the Clwydian Range, North Wales. Anna’s husband David and father in

Parisellas A leading manufacturer of quality, award-winning ice cream and sorbet available in over 50 outlets throughout North Wales, Parisellas has been a Llandudno favourite since 1943. The history of this special ice cream parlour is so interesting and began when 16-year old Domenico Parisella emigrated to Great Britain from the small village of Colle San Magno, 110 kilometres south east of Rome, in 1912. Domenico learned to make ice cream in Scotland and England before settling down with his wife and three children in Llandudno. Today, Parisellas has been delighting regulars and tourists with unique flavours like Lemon Curd, Jaegermeister, Amaretto & Black Cherry, Honeycomb, Blue Banana. While Cuba might be the birthplace of the Mojito, there is no better place to enjoy this vibrant cocktail than North Wales in the summertime. OK, so you might need a little bit of inspiration to get that Latin vibe going on, but by your third Mojito we can guarantee that your heart will be in Havana – even if your body is actually in Colwyn Bay…

Mojito Equipment - 12oz Gibraltar Glass, Muddler, Bar Spoon Ingredients - 12 mint leaves, 4 lime wedges, 25ml gomme, 2 shots of White Rum Method - Add mint leaves, squeeze limes into glass and add spent limes. Add the gomme and ‘muddle’ the mixture. Add crushed ice. Pour White Rum over the ice. Using the flat end of the bar spoon stir the mixture. Add a dash of soda to taste Garnish - Sprig of mint

IN THE MIX

Of course, if you’d rather sit back and relax while somebody mixed your ideal cocktail for you, then why not visit Sheldon’s in Colwyn Bay? From a Margarita to a Mojito, it has quite the cocktail selection and is quickly becoming the place to go for cocktails in North Wales. 01492 339821 www.sheldonsbar.co.uk

Raise your glass This month’s column is dedicated to heat wave wines – if it ever comes‌ You can’t beat a beautifully chilled glass of rosĂŠ, to go with some well-deserved great British weather. Dust off the BBQ, pop those corks, and pour away. The longest day has passed and we’re all hoping for some the appearance of some sunshine. According to the forecasters, warmer weather is back for much of the country, so it’s time for another round-up of rosĂŠs, which are currently dominating the independent wine shop shelves and demonstrate the wide variety of grapes and styles that can create our “pinksâ€?. Let us make the most of them while we can this August – in just few weeks, autumn will be here, the days become cooler and wines quaffed will be of a different nature needed. Watch out for jellyfish

Warmer water brings jellyfish onto our coastlines in August, which can be found in the shallows or washed up on beaches. Barrel Jellyfish grow up to a metre across and are common in the Irish Sea, but most such as Moon Jellyfish and Compass Jellyfish are around 20cm in diameter. They are beautiful creatures, but some can sting so don’t touch even if you think they’re dead. And let’s bust the fun myth that the Welsh word for jellyfish is Pysgod Wibliwobli – it is Sglefren fôr.

Following the short Arctic summer, wading birds are flooding through North Wales in August, their parental duties over and the juveniles not far behind. Waders depend on our muddy estuaries and coastal pools to probe for food as they rest after the first leg of their journey, continuing south after a day or two. Some occur in hundreds, but others such as Greenshanks are scarcer. Look out for their long greenish legs and bill, clean white back and tail in flight, and trisyllabic ‘tiu-tiu-tiuoo’ call.

Wrexham As well as all the amenities on the Gwersyllt side of the park, the quieter Llay side includes a Local Nature Reserve in which you can find scarce orchids such as Common Twayblade that flower in late summer, and the largest population of Dune Helleborines in the world!

Julian Hughes grew up in North Wales, which instilled a lifelong love of nature. He lives near Llandudno, manages the RSPB’s public affairs work in Wales, and writes about the region’s wildlife.

Auctioneering Firm advice sometimes, I think, is appropriate and urgently necessary to protect people who are potentially unaware and vulnerable.

Alarm bells start ringing with me when I see full-page newspaper adverts saying ‘Jewellery One Day Antiques Roadshow - Sell For Instant Cash!’ These travelling dealers may well be reputable but not all are, as in all types of businesses, so great caution is advised. Most jewellery and silver dealers will value items on their weight and the scrap or bullion value of the metal on the day of purchase. For the love of all things

vintage...

Confessions of a modern day magpie Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. Now you all know that Tatty is the “go-to” girl for vintage, right? My instinctive nature for wheedling out that “special” item of clothing could almost be classed as a sixth sense or a super power at the very least. Tat-girl? Hmm… OK, maybe not. So, when I sourced the most incredible 1920’s Japanese kimono, I knew that it would be destined for a greater life and that it wouldn’t be languishing around TDHQ for very long. Floor sweeping darkest midnight blue silk, exquisitely hand embroidered front and back with a kaleidoscope of silk thread flowers. In my mind I was thinking bohemian bride. To find such an item in pristine condition is a rarity, usually they are moth eaten or damaged. Silk, being a delicate, natural fabric does not fare well and can perish overtime if not cared for and stored correctly. No sooner had the kimono gone live on the website that the phone began to ring. “Are you a fan of the Novelist Daphne du Maurier?” the voice on the phone enquired. “That’s a clue,” she said. The call was from a production buyer involved with the long anticipated remake of the Gothic novel ‘Rebecca’, which is currently being filmed for Netflix. “The kimono is needed on set for tomorrow, is that do-able?” With a strong, star-studded female cast including Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James and Keeley Hawes, I wonder which lucky lady will be wearing it? We will have to wait and see! Even better news…Tatty decided to hire the kimono out as a prop. A brilliant business decision, resulting in the kimono being returned to TDHQ at the end of filming. With the added provenance of the robe being cast in celluloid, hopefully making it even more desirable to the next owner. Prop hire is a recent development at TDHQ, a decision made in response to the market demand. So, if you are staging a venue for photography or film or need help looking for that “special” vintage wedding dress, please do not hesitate to contact us. n Sourced by Tatty With Love x
