The Big Picture The picturesque village of Betws-y-Coed acts as a gateway to the Snowdonia National Park and, in particular, the atmospheric Fairy Glen. Known in Welsh as Ffos Noddun, which translates as ‘deep ditch’, legend has it that the name derives from the mystical spirits that are believed to live there. Fairy Glen is a beautiful, natural landscape comprising mini waterfalls enclosed within the woodlands, making it one of the prettiest sights in North Wales – and one which certainly comes alive at this time of year, whether you bump into any faeries or not…

The history of Llandudno comes alive in this vibrant postcard collection…

From as early as 1864, Llandudno was known as ‘The Queen of the Welsh Resorts’ and today it continues to attract millions of visitors every year. Holidaymakers are drawn here by its glorious setting, framed by the Great Orme and Little Orme headlands, and attractions which include two beaches, a Grade II listed pier and its proximity to Snowdonia and the World Heritage town of Conwy. The postcard first appeared in the 19th Century and became very important to the holiday trade of the town. Millions of cards were sold which were, in effect, worldwide advertising for the resort. One of Llandudno’s most interesting residents during this time was G. R. Thompson, who had a newsagent’s business and became the biggest commissioner and publisher of postcards. He crowned himself ‘The Postcard King’ and his cards all featured his image on the reverse. Fast forward to today and a new book, Llandudno: The Postcard Collection, has been released to celebrate the history of the postcard in this vibrant town. Local author John Lawson-Reay draws on an extensive collection of postcards to provide a colourful chronicle of Llandudno’s history. As well as chapters devoted to the promenade and parades, the beach and boats, the Great Orme and the pier, the author also focuses on the town centre and significant buildings, together with the outlying areas. For residents and visitors alike, this is a fascinating and evocative portrait of a favourite seaside resort in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

I was overwhelmed by the kind and compassionate responses I received.” She considers social media an essential platform for communicating with young fans, but acknowledges its dangers. “I have no idea how girls growing up in this society cope,” continues Niki. “Social media is a wormhole of shame and comparison, coated in false depictions of ‘real life’. The lines between what’s real and what isn’t are so blurry it’s terrifying.” With the average amount of time spent on the internet via a smartphone found to be three hours 24 minutes per day among 18-24 year olds, according to Ofcom, there’s certainly a responsibility to use these platforms as a force for good. “I try my best to put out an honest portrayal of my life; I don’t retouch photos and find it frustrating that so many others in the industry don’t comply when there are impressionable eyes on them. A Family Ticket to see Sleeping Beauty the Pantomime at Venue Cymru Our friends at Venue Cymru are offering a family ticket for one lucky winner (4 tickets) to see this year’s sensational family pantomime on the 7th of December at 7pm! Sleeping Beauty will star Sherrie Hewson, Kieran Powell and Friends and Nigel Ellacott in an all-new spectacular production. Packed with all of the traditional pantomime ingredients local audiences have come to expect, Sleeping Beauty will be spectacularly brought to life with an abundance of jaw-dropping dance, side-splitting comedy, sensational song and plenty of festive magic. When a beautiful Princess is given a 16th birthday present by her evil godmother she is placed under a cruel curse and forced to sleep for 100 years. Can true love survive and the handsome Prince Charming break the spell? Can the Princess’ friends help save her, and who will outwit the evil Enchantress and foil her wicked plans? Winner will be chosen on the 27th of November. T’s&C’s apply. venuecymru.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK INSIDE: recipes wine cocktail of the month

NWM 2019 Page 47

OF THE

Month

You can never go wrong with a good margarita, but adding passion fruit to this timeless classic makes a cocktail that is both sweet and sour, so it has a little bit of something for everybody. This passion fruit margarita is easy to make – and even easier to drink…

Passion Fruit Margarita Ingredients 1 x passion fruit 1 x 50ml shot of Tequila 1 x 25ml Triple Sec 1 x 30ml freshly squeezed lime juice 1 x 7.5ml Gomme Method: Scoop out the flesh from the passion fruit and add all of the ingredients into a Boston shaker, shake over ice and strain into a Margarita glass Garnish: Salt the rim of the glass and garnish with a wedge of lime

IN THE MIX

Of course, if you’d rather sit back and relax while somebody mixed your ideal cocktail for you, then why not visit Sheldon’s in Colwyn Bay? From a Margarita to a Mojito, it has quite the cocktail selection and is quickly becoming the place to go for cocktails in North Wales. 01492 339821 www.sheldonsbar.co.uk

Raise your glass It is the start of November and, here in the shop, the team’s thoughts are all around the change in seasons. Mark is looking forward to lighting his multifuel stove and getting some serious reds ready to drink, Pete has been to his first scare event of the year, Tim keeps trying to use the ‘C’ word (no not that one!!) and Blu is enjoying walking through the first fall of leaves. But all of us are looking forward to the nights drawing in, heating systems being switched back on, headier wines being drunk. This led us on to the conversation of why do we do this? This is all about you and your enjoyment, so don’t step away There is a school of thought that lighter whites, rose and

We will be covering key recent and forthcoming developments in employment law, including court/tribunal decisions regarding working time, rest breaks, minimum wage record-keeping requirements, restrictive covenants and discrimination and harassment, and providing a reminder about statutory changes relating to statements of written terms. We will also look at workplace harassment in more detail, including the impact of the #metoo movement on workplace relations, and how employers can minimise the risk of facing claims, or succeed with a statutory defence if they are brought. Related to this, we will dispel some myths about non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and provide guidance on when and how they can be used effectively and legally. There will be the opportunity to network with fellow attendees both before and after the seminar and delegates will also have the opportunity to speak to a member of our employment team should they have any specific queries or points they would like to discuss with us.

Local novelist gains fans across the pond

A North Walian novelist who lost his wife and only daughter to cancer is gaining new fans in America with the release of his latest book. Richard Rees, who used to have an accountancy practice in Wrexham, is attracting a new following in the USA, with sales rapidly increasing on Amazon. His first novel - The Illuminati Conspiracy - was published by Hodder and Stoughton before Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons, which featured a shadowy secret society reaching into the higher echelons of power. His second, Shadow of The Mary Celeste (retitled The Reikel Conspiracy) featured Opus Dei and an albino priest killer - and coincidentally, also came out before The Da Vinci Code. And succeeding stories reveal other influences on his writing. Dear Abigail is a tribute to his daughter, Elisabeth, who Richard cared for before she died at only 32 from ovarian cancer. The book was written for Richard’s granddaughter – the ‘Abigail’ of the title – as she has no memory of her mother. All proceeds are donated to the charity, Target Ovarian Cancer. www.richardhrees.com

Lanyon Bowdler expands team A law firm which recently expanded into North Wales has added another local addition to its Conwy based team. Llinos Roberts joined Lanyon Bowdler in May 2019 as a newly-qualified solicitor at its Conwy office, which opened earlier this year, and specialises in commercial and agricultural areas of the law - assisting Edward Nutting, who heads the North Wales team. “Llinos knows the area extremely well and will be an excellent addition to our team,” commented Edward. “She will be playing an integral role in helping me in the expansion of the commercial and agricultural property department in North Wales.” Meanwhile Llinos said: “Being brought up on the family farm near Caernarfon, I feel I have a unique insight into farming and believe that this knowledge, my rural roots and excellent knowledge of the area will be of great benefit to the clients I will be working for. Being bilingual is another service I bring to the role - I am happy to act for clients in either Welsh or English.” llinos.roberts@lblaw.co.uk

Rydal Penrhos student makes national squad A talented sailing squad member at Rydal Penrhos has secured a prestigious national squad selection for the second consecutive season. Llion Morris, a Year 9 pupil at the school, will once again be part of the ITCA GBR National Topper Squad for their winter training programme in the coming months. This represents a significant milestone for the pupil as there are only 25 squad places available for the programme, and Llion will now embark on a series of additional training sessions to further enhance his development. It has been another campaign full of significant achievements for the teenager, who has developed his skills considerably since his involvement with the school’s RYA accredited Sailing Centre. This has resulted in a series of impressive competition triumphs over the summer, which culminated

in a tremendous victory in the Topper fleet at the British Youth Sailing Welsh Regional Championships, meaning Llion now currently holds all three national Topper titles, a feat only achieved by two other sailors previously. “Llion’s ongoing commitment to his sailing is matched by his incredible ability to thrive on a consistent basis within a competitive setting, and he is thoroughly deserving of a place in the ITCA GBR National Topper Squad,” commented senior school head Sally Ann Harding. “He has emerged as a fantastic role model to younger sailing squad members and is always looking to improve not only his own abilities, but others around him which is a fantastic trait to have.” www.rydalpenrhos.com

EDUCATION NEWS Wrexham Glyndwr goes green Enjoying a cuppa at Wrexham Glyndŵr University is helping staff and students do their bit for the environment. As part of a drive to cut down on the amount of waste being sent to landfill, the university has worked alongside catering partner Aramark to encourage staff and students to stop using disposable cups and switch to reusable alternatives. One way in which this has been done is by adding an extra charge on for each hot drink served in a non-reusable cup – with the proceeds being ploughed back into environmentallyfriendly ‘Husk Up cups’ instead. Over the past academic year, the scheme has raised £8,250 – and seen 332kg of cups being saved from landfill. Wrexham Glyndwr University Director of Operations, Lynda Powell, said: “Over the past academic year we’ve already saved an impressive amount of waste from going to landfill through making one small change to the way our drinks are served. A fifth of the hot drinks we sell are now served in a re-usable cup. “However, our aim has always been to cut that level of waste far further, so we have invested the proceeds from the last year’s charges directly back into purchasing 2,000 Wrexham Glyndwr University-branded ‘Husk Up cups.’”
The microwave and dishwasher safe Husk Up Cups are made from rice husk – not plastic – and are biodegradable, containing no melamine or bisphenol A. www.glyndwr.ac.uk

Myddelton makes Independent Schools of the Year final Pupils and staff at Myddelton Preparatory School, Denbigh, are celebrating after being praised by judges for the outstanding student experience they provide to pupils across all years. Myddelton Prep is one of a number to make it through to the final stage of the Independent Schools of the Year 2019 competition, which is run by Independent School Parent magazine and open to independent schools from across the country. “We are thrilled to have been named as finalists, said Katie Gresley-Jones, head of prep school at Myddelton College. “This accolade reflects the hard work and dedication of both our staff and the children, and our commitment to ensuring we provide our pupils with the very best educational experience there is to offer. The ISP were impressed with our commitment to not only equip our pupils with the skills needed to work in the 21st Century, but also with the skills needed to cope with the demands and pressures of life in the 21st Century. We look forward now to sharing this success with the whole school community, including our parents, students, and our teaching teams.” Finalists will be featured in a widely distributed special winner’s supplement magazine and will be given a rosette to display alongside their brand. In addition, winners will be presented with a trophy. www.myddeltoncollege.com

The

Wedding planner After speaking to lots of newly engaged couples at a recent wedding fayre in North Wales, there was one statement I heard repeatedly throughout the day, which has prompted this month’s column: “I have no idea where to start!” There’s nothing more magical than hearing those four words, ‘will you marry me?’ and there’s nothing more exciting than telling the world you’re going to get married! But… where’s the best place to start? Sit down together and talk through any special dates you have as a couple, which may direct you towards the date you’d like to book for your wedding day. This could be the date you first met, the date you got engaged or a date of a significant family member who is no longer with you, as it would be your way of including them as part of your day. Once you have a specific date in mind, you should then draw up a list of everyone you would like to invite to your big day. When writing down your guest list, think about the person you’re adding carefully and the reasons why you want them to be part of your big day. After all your budget will determine the number of guests you’ll be able to invite. You may wish to have the same number of guests throughout the day and evening or you may wish to invite close family

In spring, hawthorn hedges blaze white with blossom, but by autumn the leaves have fallen, leaving behind the small, bright red berries known as ‘haws’. The name is the old English word for ‘hedge’, and it’s still one of our commonest countryside shrubs. No surprise,

Lungs of the forest

Wales holds an amazing 50% of all the world’s Atlantic oak woodland, thanks to our oceanic climate, especially the high rainfall. This special habitat is home to some very special plants. They are not showy and colourful, but these mosses and lichens grow on old trees thanks to the clean air and the wet environment. Tree Lungwort is one such specialist, an indicator of ancient woodland, its billowing ‘leaves’ growing on tree trunks. Celtic Rainforests Wales is a major programme underway in Snowdonia National Park to restore the woodland by removing the invasive Rhododendron bushes and managing the woodland with grazing animals.

Flies that build their own underwater home

Caddisflies are a family of moth-like insects with hairy wings, which you can see through the summer in wetlands, even around garden ponds. The larvae live in water, protecting themselves by gluing together tiny stones, sand, leaves and twigs using a silk they generate in their mouth. Caddisfly larvae live in sheltered streams, and this is a good month to look for them. You’ll be amazed how well camouflaged they are!

and in the creeks birds such as Little Egrets and Redshanks feed. Visit at the highest tide and you’ll see birds (and even small mammals) pushed closer to shore. A permit is required to visit the hides at Connah’s Quay nature reserve, but you can watch from the Wales coast path at Flint Castle.

Julian Hughes grew up in North Wales, which instilled a lifelong love of nature. He lives near Llandudno, manages the RSPB’s public affairs work in Wales, and writes about the region’s wildlife.

Since being invited to write for North Wales Magazine some months ago, Cato Crane has been very busy in the region. We have visited many clients in Mold, Ruthin, Holywell, Whitford, Bala, Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea. Last Monday our removal team and I were in Aberdovey removing pictures, silver, ceramics and good clocks – all of which were destined for auction in our busy City of Liverpool Auction Rooms.

Confessions of a modern day magpie Her name was Tatty, she was a Showgirl. With purple feathers in her hair. Well what can I say… My head is spinning with the amount of gorgeous stock flooding into TDHQ. Every day is like Christmas, unpacking deliveries while trying to remember what it is we have been buying? As much as buying antiques and running the business is tremendous fun, it is also really hard work and I am desperately trying to keep on top of the sold orders in the despatch bay, not that Tatty’s complaining – we really are fortunate to be succeeding in these uncertain economic times. Through Alex’s contacts, and from writing in North Wales Magazine, we have had some wonderful and interesting house calls, and I can honestly say it never fails to surprise me, when you’re welcomed into the most unexpected places to explore a lifetime of collecting and family history. Maintaining the right balance and mix of stock in our showroom is always a tricky task to fulfil. At TDHQ we are known for our bohemian vibe. Heavily influenced by our love of intricately detailed North African furniture, Moorish lanterns, Persian rugs and Asian art. It’s a relaxed but carefully thought out look, with a generous sprinkling of the English country house thrown in. To add variety and to compliment our look, Tatty feels it’s

IN THE

STARS...

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

November’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) You can’t afford to ignore a tense financial situation in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th insists you re-think your spending habits. It may be necessary to find a more lucrative job, curtail luxury purchases and pay off some debts. On the 26th, the New Moon warns against venturing into unknown territory. Although you long for adventure, you need a reliable guide. TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) Mid-November will push you to be more demanding. On the 14th, the Full Moon will prompt you to confront a demanding friend, romantic partner or business associate. If you sense they’ll never give you the support and sympathy you need, you may decide to go solo. Although this situation will be highly emotional, it will make logical sense. GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) A shocking secret will come to light, due to a revelatory Full Moon on the 12th. You’ll be dismayed to discover a charming colleague has been involved in underhanded activity. If they ask for you to cover their mistakes, refuse. You can’t compromise your relationship for the sake of this manipulator. Protect your interests. The New Moon on the 26th indicates a partnership will take root. CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) A group effort won’t pan out the way you wanted. A tense Full Moon on the 12th indicates creative squabbles. This is one of those situations where too many cooks have spoiled the broths. Although you have worked to keep your ego in check, this has only allowed pushier individuals to get their way. You’ll be highly disappointed with the result.

LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) On the 12th, the Full Moon will bring an unexpected expense. You’ll have to scramble to pay this bill. Keep a careful eye on your bank balance. It could dip into the red if you forget to record an outgoing cheque or monthly payment. Although this situation is frustrating, it is also a teaching moment. Learning to stick to a budget will help you make the most of your finances. SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) The Full Moon on the 12th brings attention to a troubled relationship. You will no longer be able to ignore the troubling behaviour of someone close to your heart. Resist the temptation to explain away these jarring incidents. Instead, suggest you go to counselling together. If your friend will not get help, you may decide to talk to a professional and seek their advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) It will be time to make a decision about a health matter on the 12th. The Full Moon will require you to find a treatment for a nagging ache and pain. It’s possible this problem could be stress-related. Making changes to your daily routine is critical to your wellbeing. If this means breaking a bad habit, getting treatment for an addiction or leaving a toxic situation, do it. CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) A creative project won’t get the reception you desire on the 12th. That’s when a tense Full Moon heaps harsh criticism upon you. Resist the urge to be defensive, especially on social media. Maintaining a quiet, dignified silence will prompt fair minded people to take a second look at your work. You’re being unfairly accused of broadcasting a troubling message.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) You’ll be expected to do some damage control at work in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th could shed light on an ongoing problem. Dealing with dissatisfied customers will be challenging. You’ll have to fight to strike a compromise that satisfies both clients and your company. Listen more than you speak. On the 26th, the New Moon will put you in the path of romance.

AQUARIUS (January21st – February 19th) Home and family demand your attention on the 12th. That’s when the Full Moon makes you realise how much you’ve been neglecting your nearest and dearest. Being in constant communication with work has undermined your personal relationships. It’s time to change your priorities. This may mean leaving a position that requires you are constantly on call.

VIRGO (August 24th - September 23rd) Returning from a trip or graduating from a course of study could be rather deflating in mid-November. Instead of celebrating this achievement, the tense Full Moon on the 12th will make you nervous about the future. While it’s true you won’t be sure about your next moves, that isn’t a bad thing. Keep your options open and stop pressuring yourself to forge a new path.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) You won’t be able to put off mundane tasks in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th will require you to stop what you’re doing and attend to routine paperwork and household chores. Negative feedback from an authority figure will raise your hackles. It will take all your strength to maintain a dignified silence while they heap criticisms on you.
