The Big Picture You know that autumn has arrived when the ivy on the Tu Hwnt I’r Bont tearooms in Llanrwst begins to turn the most glorious shade of burgundy. Originally built as a residential dwelling in 1480, Tu Hwnt i’r Bont (Beyond the Bridge) is actually considerably older than the Inigo Jones Bridge it stands beside. Once used as the courthouse for the surrounding area, Tu Hwnt i’r Bont has fallen into disrepair several times throughout its life and has been rebuilt and restored over the centuries thanks to the generosity of the Llanrwst townsfolk. For the past 50 years this local landmark has been owned by the National Trust, and it now leases the building to the family run Tu Hwnt I’r Bont tearooms – and it’s pretty safe to say that no visit to Llanrwst is complete until you’ve recharged your batteries with one of its traditionally made scones. Just don’t ask for the recipe…

THE RIGHT START Choosing the right school for your child is no mean feat. As always, research is the key – Nick Embrey gets you started with a roundup of the regions independent schools and universities.

Myddleton College in Denbigh is a co-educational establishment that knows the importance of each and every student

contemplating private education. In keeping with this, Rydal Penrhos prides itself on the detail and attention paid to the individual student and suggests that an “education must be rooted in a school’s values and principles but mindful of the fact that children have different needs, talents and interests”. Academic results too are a necessary benchmark for all schools and, in 2016 (the last publically available results at the time of writing), 96.8% of A-level exams sat by students at Rydal Penrhos were passed at GCSE level, with 91% of all exams sat scoring grade A-C. Beyond the classroom, co-curricular activities are a huge part of any modern fee paying school and the range of sports and activities offered here is longer than the Brexit Secretary’s ‘to do’ list. As summed up so succinctly by the school itself,

FREEDOM TO FLOURISH From our foundation, St David’s College has pioneered teaching that enables pupils with additional learning needs to reach their academic potential, whilst allowing pupils with no specific learning needs to thrive and excel. Alongside this we aim to develop every individuals character, enabling them to gain an extroadinary range of skills and discover true self-confidence.

WHAT OUR PARENTS SAY “Both my daughter and son go to St Davids College in Llandudno North Wales. My daughter Olivia is Dyslexic, and is coming up 16 this July. My Son James is not Dyslexic, but still attends the school. Both are boarders. All I can say is this: It was the best decision my wife and I have ever made. It is by far an exceptional school that has given both our children the skills to approach their futures full of confidence and with a sound knowledge of all that is necessary for the rest of their lives. I would highly recommend this school to any prospective pupils.” “As expats we relocated to Hong Kong 11 years ago when our son was 2. Orin spent his early years struggling through the educational system here in Hong Kong with dyslexia. We tried various schools but constantly failed to get proper support and educational tools required to fit his learning needs. We finally discovered St Davids College, and Orin, who is now 13 years old, started at St Davids College in 2016. His educational learning experience has simply been transformed. Orin has embraced boarding experience and simply loves the outdoor education and activities, which play a pivotal part of his new education. St David’s College is so much more than a school, its a life’s education.”

What to do INIGO JONES SLATE WORKS Situated just outside of the royal town, Inigo Jones Slate Works are open every day of the year (except Christmas). Originally founded in 1861 to prefabricate school writing slates, Inigo Jones had to find new products to sell when writing slates were replaced by paper. The owner at the time, Hugh Jones, started producing electrical panels in slate which proved to be very popular and the company rapidly expanded, sourcing its slate from the whole of North Wales. More recently the company has supplied more slate for domestic use and these include such things as flooring, kitchen work tops and hearths. Workshop tours are available and there is a café on site. www.inigojones.co.uk LÔN EIFION CYCLE TRACK The Lôn Eifion cycle track is part of Lôn Las Cymru (it’s route number 8 on the National Cycle Network) and it begins near Caernarfon Castle. This traffic-free route climbs 500ft over ten miles to its highest point, a radio mast south of Penygroes, before a gentle downhill stretch to the village of Bryncir. The beauty of this route is that you can take it easy and do a short cycle to one of the many facilities on the way, or do the whole lot and back again without stopping if you want a bit more of a workout. The entire length of Lôn Eifion has a tarmaced surface making it ideal for the whole family. GYPSY WOOD Gypsy Wood Park is a unique North Wales attraction that all the family will love. There are loads of things to see and do at its outdoor park in the foothills of Snowdonia – and it is a must-see attraction for all animal, nature, outdoor, train and fairy lovers. While it is primarily a summer attraction, Gypsy Wood will be open for some special events during Halloween and Christmas. www.gypsywood.co.uk GALERI of a stone eagle which symbolized King Edward’s

Stephen Gregory’s first novel, THE CORMORANT, was set in the mountains of Snowdonia and in Caernarfon town. Acclaimed in UK and USA and translated into different languages, the book won the Somerset Maugham Award and was made into a film starring Ralph Fiennes. BODELWYDDAN CASTLE Bodelwyddan is more a country house with battlements than a castle but it has enough strange happenings going on to have attracted the team from TV’s Most Haunted show. Human bones were found in the chimney in 1829 and were reputed to be the remains of a wife murdered by her husband for committing adultery. There is the ghost of a soldier in one of the galleries, a ghostly large dog that seems to be an Irish Wolfhound, an apparition in a Victorian dress in the sculpture gallery and a nasty ghost in the cellar who tries to strangle visitors. Each year Bodelwyddan runs ghost hunts at various dates, and there is one for Halloween this year on 27th October which is for over 18’s only.

attraction. Would your kids like to know all about British seas and the kind of creatures that live in them? Do they want to see sharks, seahorses, octopus, lobsters and other exciting and elusive British marine animals up close? I’m sure that the answer is a resounding yes because, Halloween or not, sometimes there is nothing quite as frightening as Mother Nature. Based on the shores of the beautiful Menai Strait in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Anglesey Sea Zoo has some of the best views of the Snowdonia Mountain Range. It is unique in the fact that all the species there are native. It aims to showcase the vast variety of British marine life, while also investing in conservation and research projects both locally and further afield – and its fundamental principles focus on sustainability, recycling and supporting environmental issues.

BALA LAKE RAILWAY Bala Lake Railway (Rheiffordd Llyn Tegid) offers a delightful and scenic 9 mile return journey alongside the stunning waters of Bala Lake – the largest natural lake in Wales. The journey takes you through the mountains and woodlands of Southern Snowdonia and starts at the little village of Llanuwchylln. Once you reach the end of the line at Bala you can walk into the town from the station in

around ten minutes. The Narrow gauge line makes a superb morning or afternoon out and is very popular with holidaymakers to the area. The railway follows a section of the former standard gauge Ruabon to Barmouth GWR line that closed in 1965. www.bala-lake-railway.co.uk

for over 100 years. It started as a 2ft gauge horsedrawn tramway which was then converted to a 15 inch gauge railway in 1916. In 1984 the line was completely re- built to a 12.25 inch gauge. This is one of those seaside lines that people were often taken on by their parents and then took their own children in turn. Many visitors stay in Barmouth and cross the estuary on the ferry to make a morning or afternoon of it on the train and beach. www.fairbournerailway.com

FFESTINIOG & WELSH HIGHLAND RAILWAYS As the oldest railway company in the world still operating trains, the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways knows a bit about what makes a journey special. The Ffestiniog Railway is the world’s oldest narrow gauge railway with almost 200 years of history, taking you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. It still operates three of its original locomotives - over 150 years old - and original carriages, offering an unrivalled journey back into the golden age of rail travel. Meanwhile, The Welsh Highland Railway is the UK’s longest heritage railway and runs for 25 miles from Caernarfon, past the foot of Snowdon and the picture postcard village of Beddgelert, then through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog. Passengers ride in some of the most comfortable carriages on any heritage railway in the UK, including first class Pullman luxury and freshly cooked food delivered to your seat. 2014 saw the opening of the new £1.25 million Porthmadog Harbour Station, offering greatly improved passenger facilities and a convenient cross-platform interchange between the two railways. www.festrail.co.uk

Page 40 NWM 2017

6

THE WELSH HIGHLAND HERITAGE RAILWAY This sounds the same as The Welsh Highland Railway but isn’t! The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is run entirely by volunteers and operates a frequent service from March to November from the lines main station opposite the Network Railway Station in Porthmadog. A short journey of one mile takes about half an hour and brings you to Pen-yMount Junction but, as the railway itself points out, ‘you won’t be on the train for most of the time’. Here the railway connects with the Welsh Highland Railway main line. On the return journey the train stops at Gelert’s Farm Halt allowing passengers to visit the engine sheds and a museum. There’s also a 7.25inch gauge miniature railway to boot! www.whr.co.uk

THE LLANGOLLEN RAILWAY The picturesque Llangollen Railway is the only standard gauge heritage railway in North Wales so is a little different to others we have featured here. However, it is much too good to miss out. From a preserved railway station near Llangollen’s historic Dee Bridge (on the former Ruabon to Barmouth Line) the railway follows The River Dee and The Dee Valley through spectacular scenery and continues for a gorgeous ten miles to reach Corwen. The railway runs through both an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the views are ever changing. The Llangollen Railway runs both steam hauled trains and diesel locomotives and gives enthusiasts the chance to come and experience rail travel as ‘it used to be’ – and many believe still should be. www.llangollen-railway.co.uk

TALYLLYN RAILWAY Here’s a real family favourite. The Talyllyn Railway was built on a gauge of 2 feet 3 inches and was opened in 1865 to carry slate from The Bryn Eglwys quarries near Abergynolwyn. The line runs for 7.25 miles from Tywyn by beautiful Cardigan Bay to Nant Gwernol. Since the death of the lines owner, Sir Henry Haydn Jones in 1950, volunteers have made vast improvements to the line and today it gives a delightful day out for all the family. Kids have a very special place in their hearts for it as The Rev W Awdry based his fictional Skarloey Railway on it and this of course was part of the world of Thomas The Tank Engine in his famous ‘Railway Series’. www.talyllyn.co.uk

CONWY VALLEY MINIATURE RAILWAY AND MUSEUM Here’s a real treat for the railway enthusiast. Conwy Valley Miniature Railway and Museum is located next to the railway station by the village green in the centre of Betwsy-Coed. You can do an eight minute miniature railway ride (7.25 inch gauge) around the lovely landscaped grounds and there is also an electric tramcar (the only one in Wales) which is 15 inch gauge. The train ride is on a ‘dogs bone’

9 THE GREAT ORME TRAMWAY The Great Orme Tramway is the UK’s only cable-hauled public road tramway and it has been a popular Llandudno attraction since it opened in July 1902. The Great Orme Tramway climbs for a mile up The Great Orme Country Park from Victoria Station in the town. It stops at The Halfway Station Exhibition where you can look around, change trams and carry on to the summit complex of The Great Orme. The tramcars are named after different Saints and, as a romantic way of reaching a high and magnificent viewpoint, it can have few equals. The tramway is operated on a funicular system controlled by winchmen and attendants. www.greatormetramway.co.uk

There is no disputing the fact that North Wales has created a name for itself as an adventure tourism destination, so its great to see that the food and drink offer is now raising its game to match the quality of the attractions. “You can feel a buzz about North Wales,” adds Bryn. “There is a movement happening, on the food scene, the outdoors scene, Zip World is at the forefront of that. Food for thought

The nights are drawing in. For some, this is a dark, depressing time when the Bermuda shorts, the sun cream and the clothes line are all dutifully put away for another year and the central heating has to come back on. Before long, some of us will be living vampire lives again, when it’s dark when you set off for work and dark by the time you get home. Personally though, I love the autumn – so long as it isn’t raining. The nose twinkles in the slightly frosty air as you swap your summer wardrobe for coats, gloves and scarves and go out for a trudge. Like the view from inside a slowly twisting kaleidoscope, the bright and dark greens of summer magically become copper and tan. Some of the countryside in north Wales is so overwhelmingly beautiful at this time of year that to slide on a pair of wellies and go on a walkabout is like stepping into a Constable painting. Plus, the hedgerows are filled with many-berried snacks, to save you from having to carry a burdensome packed lunch around with you. The summer might always feel like it’s ended too soon, but in terms of seasonal food, it finishes at exactly the right time, just as the idea of another light salad with grilled fish begins to seem unbearable. Now is the time for casseroles, stews, tagines and tureens of chunky, nourishing soups. The Sunday roast comes back into its own about now as you rekindle the family tradition of slamming in the meat, going for a walk in the countryside, stopping in for an ale or two, then returning to a house perfumed by an oven full of lamb shoulder and goose fat roasties.

Paysanne has been a Deganwy fixture since 1988. Over three decades, we have been presenting our guests with a permanently fashionable combination of classic, tummy-pleasing French country-style food, personally-sourced wines and warm, generous service. You can build up quite a hunger exploring all that beautiful north Wales has to offer, so let us deal with that for you. Take a look at what we have to offer at our website, Facebook page and all that other terribly modern stuff. We look forward to seeing you soon.

RSPB plans ahead Summer may already be a distant memory, but volunteers at RSPB Conwy nature reserve are already planning for 2018. ‘Wild About Nature’ volunteers run pop-up events for children in order to inspire and enthuse families walking the trails at the popular wetland site. Funded with the support of National Lottery players, through the Heritage Lottery Fund, they have helped hundreds of children get closer to nature this year, and want more help next spring and summer. This email, from the mother of six-year old Tom, who attended a recent event summed up what makes volunteering for RSPB

Getting back

to Nature

There’s plenty of wildlife across the region in October, says Julian Hughes, if you know where to look.

Forest This forestry plantation, west of Clawddnewydd, holds the oldest trees in Clocaenog Forest, one of the few sites in mainland Wales to retain Red Squirrels. A two mile waymarked trail provides a pleasant walk, during which you should look for a diverse range of toadstools in October.

The last days of Summer

An ‘Indian Summer’ is a period of warm, sunny weather that occurs after the first hard frost of the autumn. That frost will often knock out the last of the flying insects, but if they have found a sheltered spot to survive, the sunshine will bring out the last Red Admiral butterflies and Common Darter dragonflies of the year. IN THE STARS... October’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)

LIBRA (September24th-October23rd)

On the 5th, the Full Moon will tempt you into commanding the spotlight. Instead of taking all the credit for an accomplishment, you would be wise to share it with the entire team. A gracious attitude will win the approval of both your colleagues and bosses alike. The New Moon on the 19th will find you bending over backwards to get someone’s attention.

The Full Moon on the 5th will draw your attention to a close relationship. Be more attentive to your best friend, romantic partner or workaday colleagues. You’ve been wrapped up in your own affairs; taking the focus off yourself will strengthen this bond. On the 19th, the New Moon will tempt you to change your image. Don’t do anything radical.

TAURUS (April21st-May21st)

SCORPIO (October24th-November22nd)

Early in the month, travelling could put you on the path of romance. Falling in love with someone who has a charming manner is a distinct possibility. A close relationship will give you added strength at the middle of the month. This would be a good time for getting engaged or married or signing a business agreement. On the 19th, the New Moon will disrupt your regular routine.

On the 5th, the Full Moon will bring the end to a stressful situation. You won’t be satisfied with the results, but you will be relieved to put this particular problem behind you. The New Moon on the 19th will create some difficulties with a bureaucratic matter. You’ll have to submit paperwork several times before making any headway.

GEMINI (May22nd-June21st)

SAGITTARIUS (November23rd-December21st)

You could find an ideal living situation in the early days of October. This is a terrific time to buy a home, sign a lease or refinance your mortgage. On the 5th, you’ll seek the company of friends. Beware of overindulging at a party or you’ll regret it later. The New Moon on the 19th warns against falling for an unconventional newcomer.

You have the potential to reach new heights in your career at the beginning of the month. Don’t hesitate to apply for a promotion or a better paid position during this golden period. On the 19th, the New Moon will mark the start of a creative project. Working with a team will be stressful so conserve your resources.

CANCER (June22nd-July23rd)

CAPRICORN (December22nd-January20th)

A close and loving ambiance at the beginning of the month will make you feel as if you can move mountains. The Full Moon on the 5th will mark a big shakeup on the career front. You may not want to stay with your current employer as a result. On the 19th, the New Moon will put strain on your domestic life. Find a way to spend more time on the things you love.

Don’t be shy about sharing your expertise in the early days of the month. Friends will be especially supportive during the middle of October. Accept offers of help, especially if you feel a little overwhelmed. The New Moon on the 19th could bring some unwanted attention. It may be necessary to take the blame for someone else’s mistakes.

LEO (July24th-August23rd)

AQUARIUS (January21st-February19th)

Finances are looking good in the first few days of October making this is a great time to land a new and better paid job. The New Moon on the 19th will darken your normally sunny outlook. Try not to feel too gloomy. Listening to uplifting music, watching upbeat movies and reading inspirational books will be welcome diversions from troubling current events.

The Full Moon on the 5th will bring your attention to routine tasks you’ve been neglecting. Clear your schedule to run errands, return messages and submit paperwork. Your career prospects will get a boost toward the middle of the month. On the 19th, the New Moon could create legal troubles. Instead of going to court, it may be better to pay a fine.

VIRGO (August24th-September23rd)

PISCES (February20th-March20th)

A love affair will put a special spring in your step that’s impossible to ignore in early October. On the 5th, the Full Moon will put an unexpected strain on your budget. It may be necessary to cover expenses while your business or romantic partner looks for work. The New Moon on the 19th will bring more demoralising news about a money matter.

A close partnership will help you get through a period of profound transformation at the start of the month. Cast your fears aside and take the first step towards a bold dream. The New Moon on the 19th will cause an argument to break out between you and a business or romantic partner. If you are going to maintain ties, it will be necessary to make compromises.
