The Big Picture The tiny island of South Stack, located just off Holy Island on the northwest coast of Anglesey, is home to one of the most spectacular lighthouses in Wales – aptly called South Stack Lighthouse. Covering just seven acres, the island can only be accessed via a footbridge which, in turn, can only be accessed by descending 400 steps. However, as these steps are built into the RSPB South Stack Cliffs, there is plenty of opportunity to see some of the 8,000 nesting birds that line the cliffs during the breeding season on your way down. The lighthouse itself was reopened this year, and visitors may tour the former engine room before climbing to the top of the lighthouse to take in the spectacular view.

Along this virtual journey from Beaumaris to Conwy I feel sure I have gained at least a stone in weight from a combination of over indulgences largely at the ale tents and pie stands that adorn all four of these great food festivals – but don’t just take my word for it. Pick a festival, pack a hemp bag or two to stow your purchases and set a course for North Wales this autumn. What to do WHISTLING SANDS (PORTHOR) Located about 12 miles/19 Km west of Abersoch, The National Trust owned Whistling Sands (or Porthor) is unique and one of only two such places in Europe. The name ‘Whistling Sands’ comes from the noise made by the beach when you shuffle your feet. The sound is created by the unique shape of the sand crystals here and doesn’t always happen, but when it does it is magical! The beach is backed by steep grassy cliffs and seals are often seen. It also offers sheltered surfing. There is a National Trust Carpark, café and toilets. www.nationaltrust.org.uk PLAS GLYN-Y-WEDDW Plas Glyn-y-Weddw is a short three mile drive from Abersoch and is an arts and heritage centre housed in a superb Gothic Victorian Mansion. It makes a great place to come and view contemporary Welsh art (and buy it if you feel so inclined!). There are outdoor theatre performances and a nice café. Plas Glyn-y-Weddw is owned and run by an independent charitable trust that is largely self financing. The art and cultural centre draws over a 100,000 visitors a year. www.oriel.org.uk ST. TUDWAL’S ISLANDS (YNYSOEDD SANT TUDWAL) St. Tudwal’s Islands are a pair of islands off Penrhyn Ddu near Abersoch and mark clearly the divide between the calm waters of Cardigan Bay and the rougher sea to be found Porth Ceiriad and Hells Mouth (Porth Neigwl). Boat trips can be arranged from Abersoch Harbour to go and see the seals that live there and watch the bird life. The western island is home to a lighthouse and the east island was once the location of a monastery. A boat trip around the islands makes a great outing and on sunny calm day it will live in your memory for a long time. HELLS MOUTH (PORTH NEIGWL) Porth Niegwl or Hells Mouth is a stunning sand and stone beach. It is a place to come to escape the crowded Abersoch beaches but it can get busy itself on hot summer days. You can watch the surfers or just take a walk and enjoy the magnificent scenery. There is a small parking area half a mile or so from the village of Llanengan. Although the beach has no facilities there is often a snack bar in the carpark. The cliffs are unstable and should be avoided and the sea here is not safe for bathing as the currents are too strong. GLASFRYN PARC Glasfryn Parc is located around 12 miles/ 19.31 Km from Abersoch and is billed as ‘North Wale’s premier action and activity centre’ and it is hard to argue with this. Whatever activity you can think of it is highly likely you will be able to have a go at it here. Go carting, Quad biking, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, archery, ten pin bowling, fishing, crazy golf – all these are available. And for younger children there is a soft play centre. There is a café for mums and dads and overall Glasfryn Park is a great family day out. www.glasfryn.co.uk

With so many courses to choose from it can sometimes be rather overwhelming when it comes to deciding which one to play. Thank heavens then for Go North Wales, which has launched a range of three different golf passes that enables golfers from both near and far to try a selection of different courses throughout the region for a very reasonable cost. The Gateway to Wales Golf Pass allows you to play six courses on the North Wales border for just £100. Northop, Hawarden, Mold, Old Padeswood, Padeswood & Buckley, and Holywell golf clubs are the six courses in question, and all of them boast easy access to the A55. All these 18 hole courses are all within easy reach of each other – and they all have their own unique golfing challenges. Mold Golf Club, for example, features a testing, undulating course that has a hard-won reputation. This challenging yet inspiring course boasts stunning views of the Clwydian Hills, Cheshire and the Peak District. Northop meanwhile is set in 247 acres of parkland, and is considered to be one of the most celebrated golfing venues in Wales. Designed by former Ryder Cup player John Jacobs, Northop Golf Club is open 365 days of the year and its extensive tee complexes mean that it can accommodate golfers of all levels. Tee off to raise funds Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospice is hosting its first ever golf day at North Wales Golf Course in order to help raise much needed funds. Situated in Llandudno, with excellent views over the Conwy estuary to Anglesey and the Snowdonia Mountain range, it’s a true championship links course – having previously hosted the Welsh Team Championships. For a cost of £160 per team of four, you will get bacon baps and coffee on arrival at 9.30am on Thursday 12th October, followed by an 18 hole round of golf with a shotgun start at noon. In the evening a two-course dinner, followed by a prize presentation, raffle and auction will take place. For further information call Tŷ Gobaith’s fundraising office on 01492 596581 or visit www.hopehouse.org.uk/events

Holywell is also included in the Gateway to Wales Golf Pass. Situated on Brynford Common, this inland links type course is a fair and sporting test for golfers of all abilities. It’s also one of the highest courses in Wales and, at 800 feet above sea level, its invigorating air has been known to enhance the quality of a round of golf! And if it’s sea air that you are after then perhaps the Golf Coast North Wales pass is the one for you. Prices for this one start from just £79 to play three courses, one of which must be Penmaenmawr – but you can choose between Abergele, Maesdu and North Wales for your other three rounds. Penmaenmawr golf course is as challenging in golf as it is in scenic beauty. When the view is as magnificent as this it’s worth enduring some of the slopes found on this course – and you’ll be warmly received on the 19th hole to boot. Maesdu however is a gently undulating course that also offers panoramic views across the Conwy Bay. Maesdu boasts immaculate fairways and challenging greens, which are varied and contouring, and offer a true test to golfers of all abilities. Abergele Golf Club is situated in the grounds of Gwrych Castle, and provides breathtaking views of the North Wales coast. This 18 hole parkland course has lush fairways that weave their way around wooded areas and large established

trees. The course is relatively flat and the 18th is Abergele’s signature hole due to its outstanding views.

The third pass available from Go North Wales is the Isle of Anglesey Golf Pass, which includes a game of golf on five courses on the island for only £89. Baron Hill, Henllys, Holyhead, Anglesey, Bull Bay and Storws Wen are all included in this pass, although there is a surcharge of £10 on some of the courses if you want to play during the weekend or on a bank holiday. Anglesey Golf Course is a traditional 18 hole links course that has been dubbed the St Andrews of North Wales. Set amongst the sand dunes in the popular resort of Rhosneigr, the course is renowned for its excellent greens and is a fair test for golfers of all abilities. Meanwhile the Menai Straits and the Snowdonia mountain range form the magnificent backdrop for Henllys – an 18 hole parkland course. With a par of 71, Henllys makes full use of the mature parkland trees and natural water hazards to provide a testing and enjoyable experience. Back on the mainland, and Pennant Park is another golf course that offers a challenge to all golfers from beginners to professionals. And while it isn’t part of a golfing pass, the club is currently offering a half price offer on membership, with prices starting from just £204 – making this is a great opportunity to become Penmaenmawr golf course is as challenging in golf as it is in scenic beauty

Patrick McGoohan played Number 6
What’s in a number? It’s 50 years since Number 6 first appeared on our screens in the cult TV series The Prisoner. Filmed at picturesque Portmeirion, the location soon became as iconic as the programme itself. Cai Ross reports.

Fortunately, he had inherited a large estate in north Wales upon which he could play, and so in 1922, he began his quest to prove that, as he said, “one could develop even a very beautiful site without defiling it and indeed…even enhance what nature has provided for your background.” Williams-Ellis poured into his Portmeirion project, years of architectural study and the memories of decades galavanting around the world. And, while great coffee might be available in North Wales today, that hasn’t always been the case. In fact, Heartland Coffi was launched simply because of the lack of good, local coffee. “Our passion for great tasting coffee was birthed in New Zealand’s burgeoning independent café scene during the mid to late 90’s,” explains co-founder Malcolm Klose. “My wife Tara and I always dreamed of opening a café of our own one day, and we’d discuss what it would be like as we drank flat whites in our favourite hangouts in New Zealand. Food for thought
I think we can all agree we got quite lucky with the weather this summer. During the past few summers the weather seems to have locked itself into a new, fixed pattern: May and June are nicely hot, followed by a spell of disappointing, autumnal greyness in July and August. The good news is that September has reliably provided Indian Summers over recent years, which means that there is still time to enjoy one of the great British dining traditions – the picnic. North Wales is a particularly perfect place to dine al fresco, as there are hundreds of secret, isolated hideaways dotted around the countryside, if you’re prepared to put on your boots and find them. There’s no feeling quite like the bliss of lying back on a gingham rug, munching on a slice of cherry bakewell feeling like you are the only person under the blue sky, save for the birds or the occasional curious sheep. You have to find these spots for yourself because whenever someone discovers such an oasis of tranquility, the last thing they want is for someone else to be there next time. One’s own ‘perfect picnic spot’ is one of the most closely guarded secrets you’ll ever keep. Once you make a little inroad into the north Wales countryside, hamper in hand, the potential for enjoying stunning views while you eat is frankly limitless. And if you favour a beach-dining experience, where in the world could be better than here? While we get one last shot of summer before the lights fade and the cold returns, let’s make the most of what we have on our doorstep.

Paysanne has been a Deganwy fixture since 1988. Over three decades, we have been presenting our guests with a permanently fashionable combination of classic, tummy-pleasing French country-style food, personally-sourced wines and warm, generous service. You can build up quite a hunger exploring all that beautiful north Wales has to offer, so let us deal with that for you. Take a look at what we have to offer at our website, Facebook page and all that other terribly modern stuff. We look forward to seeing you soon.

depressing to have to think about it this early – even though I love Christmas! So I’ve started to count down the days. Where should I get my tree from? What will people want to festive food match with? Turkey or beef? Turkey curry even? Cheese or Christmas pud? And what will Charlie and Jack want this year? It won’t be wine obviously, in fact it’s bound to be something electrical, or something that needs batteries at least that I usually forget to buy. Good job I’m planning early… But back to wine!
This great sparkling wine is produced with the best Raboso grapes, grown on the Veneto hills in Italy. It’s a pale rose-petal pink colour with a fine and persistent spritz. Elegant, fresh, off dry and PURE CRUNCHY RED FRUIT from the first sip. Not your average supermarket pink fizz. Exclusive @TGTG.
I’m dreaming of a White Christmas… “But if the white runs out – I’ll have red. Or whatever’s left!” Thanks Grandad! Now we have some newbies on the block at The Grape to Glass Wine Shop and Tasting Room in Rhos-on-Sea. We have a smooth selection of new Italian, Spanish, Chilean, French and Australian wines that have landed after much anticipation this month. Too many to mention in fact! But, Christmas aside, the lazy summer days (although it’s been a bit wet) have brought the next big thing when it comes to ‘PINK and FIZZ’! Iechyd da x
Tim Watson runs The Grape to Glass Wine Shop and Tasting Room in Rhos-on-Sea which, as well as offering wine from far reaching lands, also stocks locally produced beers, wines and spirits
The new kid on the block! PIGNOLETO, from Emilia-Romagna You heard it here second (or third, but here we go)! Gino Di Campo made it popular recently, major supermarkets have tried and tested it, but it’s the independent shops that are making Pignoletto a constant listing. I’ve been a follower for a long time, first coming across Pignoletto five years ago and declaring: “This is it! It’s better than Prosecco!” And now we have not one, but two new arrivals this month, fresh from the Central East Coast of Italy – the Frizzante and the newly stocked Spumante Extra Brut (pictured). Like Prosecco, Pignoletto wines are made using the ‘charmat method’ (second fermentation in steel tanks) which produces a lighter, fruitier taste that’s less complex, and finer than Champagne. This is the juice of the gods, sunbeams bottled – and it adds brilliantly to fruit gins, creating a wicked ‘Gin Spritz’ if that’s your bag. Bag? Sack? Santa… Tim, stop it!

PROPERTY of the month If you’re after spacious one-level living with a landscaped private garden then look no further…
While it may have been built 11 years ago, 12A Peulwys Lane in Old Colwyn is rather like a fine wine in that it has improved with a certain amount of time. While the builders obviously took a lot of care and attention in terms of layout and quality of finish, there is no doubt that the property has improved over the past decade due to a lovely mature garden and the introduction of that all-important homely feel. There are numerous other factors that really make this bungalow stand out from the crowd too. Firstly it is a bungalow in its truest form – there isn’t a step in sight, never mind a dormer. And, like with all true bungalows, comes flexible living. Currently dressed as a four-bedroom home, the previous owners preferred the layout with three bedrooms and a home office. But, since the property is located all on a single level, the options for different room uses are enormous.

A separate WC can also be found here, which would be pretty
useful considering that it’s quite a trek from one end of this bungalow to the other. The utility room is also home to the underfloor heating controls – there isn’t a single radiator to be found in 12A Peulwys Lane, and the editor has it on good authority that the property is “warm as toast”. A back door here leads onto a covered service area (no, the future owners of this bungalow don’t even need to get wet when taking the rubbish out), which has access onto the 50m gravelled drive and the double garage. The final jewel in this bungalow’s crown is it’s immaculately kept garden which completely surrounds the property. This beautifully private space extends to around a third of an acre, and means that you can follow the sun all day long. What more could you wish for?

It also has over a dozen different composite doors on display should you be thinking of upgrading your front door to boot.
Doorworld has the biggest selection of windows and doors across North Wales
Originally designed for the commercial market, due to their strength, security and durability, composite doors have become the new generation in domestic external doors. They combine the attributes of both timber and PVC-U doors to create a far more secure, thermally efficient and aesthetically pleasing door with greater colour options – and all virtually maintenance free. “The [composite door] industry is very much at the peak of its performance from a design and production perspective, and the market for its products is at an all time high,” comments Stewart Griffin – sales and marketing director for IG Doors. “The front door is an important visual point of focus; with its stylish appearance and pleasing aesthetics combined with high security as standard it forms a key element of how a house looks.” Conwy Valley has a wide range of bifold doors, windows and conservatories
And, when it comes to the back of the house, the amount of glass on offer is just as important as the type of frame. Bifold doors are extremely popular at the moment, as they let the outside in by providing that much sought after indoor/outdoor flow. They are also perfect for letting the garden be constantly on view which, if the great North Wales weather doesn’t let you get out in it quite as much as you would like, is a huge benefit indeed.

Conwy Valley Windows has bi-folding doors to meet all tastes and budgets, and the Penrhyn Bay based firm has found that the demand for local home improvements has been very strong this summer. “For those of us that want to open up our property and capture the outside, Bi-Folds are the perfect solution,” explains David Edwards of Conwy Valley. “We’re regularly told that enhancements to our home will prove an invaluable investment and the integration of bi-folding doors is mostly certainly that.” But, unfortunately, bi-folds aren’t the cheapest solution. They do, however, have a range of benefits that mean that they are worth every penny. Firstly, they are simple to open and close. “Customers tell us all the time that operating a set of bi-folding doors is very easy, the way they concertina as they’re pushed along the track is nothing short of graceful, closing the doors is no less of an unforgettable experience,” continues Edwards. Their flexible design also means that they are ideal for letting fresh air into the home – if you don’t want to pull the entire set of doors back then

you can open just one panel and operate it individually just as you would a stand alone back door. But the main benefit has to be in the looks department. “Aluminum bifolding doors are especially pleasing on the eye as the aluminum frames are amazingly slender and they can accommodate very large pieces of glass that virtually extend from top to bottom,” adds Edwards. Storage solutions The key to a successful kitchen scheme lies in careful planning when it comes to storage. Schmidt knows how hard the kitchen has to work and is an expert in knowing how to help you plan the perfect ergonomic design. The Jumbo collection provides practical extra deep units, ideally suited for increased and improved storage space. The furniture has a depth of 70cm instead of the standard 57.5cm, which results in no less than 30% added volume. What’s more, the worktop is then larger in line with this innovative storage solution, increasing from 62.5cm to a generous 74.5cm depth – ideal for creating extra space for cooking, food preparation, serving and storage. Whether you prefer the contemporary kitchen look or a more classic scheme, Schmidt has a huge variety of door finishes, furniture solutions and clever cabinetry designs to choose from. For one-stop shop convenience, it can also provide the very latest built-in appliances, statement extraction and feature lighting – everything you need for your dream kitchen design. www.schmidt-kitchens.com

Bathing beauty The Tubby Tub is a petite bath finished in ‘Burnished’ Iron. Created for the tiniest of bathrooms, or even for installation in your bedroom, it measures just 1200mm (4ft) in length, 730mm wide and height 890mm overall. This results in a short, compact bath that still allows an average size person to submerge themselves. The exterior of the bath can be finished in any Dulux Trade or Farrow & Ball colour, or one of Albion’s three metallic “Burnished” finishes (Gold, Iron, Bronze). Taps can either be rim mounted or if specified, the Tubby Tub can be cast with a continuous roll top and the taps then mounted on an adjacent wall or on Albion stand pipes. The feet are supplied in the traditional style and cast using grey iron and can also be finished in a range of colours. www.albionbathco.com
Sealed with a kiss Serious cooks and budding masterchefs will love experimenting with this smart vacuum sealer. It provides an effective way to enhance flavours while also keeping food fresh for longer. Simply place meat or fish in the bag with fresh herbs and spices and put the edge of the bag in the vacuum sealer. The gadget removes air from the food filled pouch and seals it tightly ensuring all liquid is contained during processes of cooking. Food cooked in a sous-vide water bath poaching appliance will help retain the food’s texture and intensify flavour while cooking. Additionally, the air-tight seal preserves food for longer than standard containers and the bags can be easily stacked in the fridge or freezer. www.alfresia.co.uk

Shelter Cymru hosts 15th annual art auction The Shelter Cymru 15th annual North Wales art auction is being held on 12th September at Theatre Clwyd in Mold. This is Shelter Cymru’s annual flagship fundraising event and has grown in popularity since it was first held in 2002. The president of the charity at the time was the Welsh artist, Sir Kyffin Williams, and he launched the very first auction to which he donated one of his prestigious artworks. The event has since snowballed and has drawn great attention from artists and collectors from across Wales. Over the years the Shelter Cymru Art Auction has raised in been overwhelmed by the generosity of artists from

Hosting families required There are many people who would love to have a dog, but their current lifestyle prohibits it. The perfect option could therefore be to borrow a pooch for a while… “We are currently seeking more hosts in the local area to care for dogs whose owners are away,” commented Karen Wright of Barking Mad Conwy Bangor & Anglesey. “This is an ideal opportunity for families, or teaching professionals, who cannot commit to full-time dog ownership during term-time, to experience the joy and life enhancing benefits of canine companionship, at a time to suit them.” Every school holiday, Barking Mad witnesses families whose holiday time is transformed by having a dog to stay. They arrive with all their own food, bedding, toys and treats, with all insurance and administration taken care of by Barking Mad. There is no need to provide anything other than your time and affection and a loving home environment. If you are real dog lovers and have some free time why not join the canine club? Visit www.barkingmad.uk.com to find out more.

IN THE STARS... September’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant
ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)
At the beginning of September, you’ll fall under the spell of an attractive newcomer. If you want to win their heart, be sure to stand out from the crowd. On the 6th, the Full Moon will cause you to slow down and smell the flowers. This is a great time to visit a retreat and enjoy solitary activities. The New Moon on the 20th will bring your attention to a nagging ache or pain.
The start of September finds you forming a powerful alliance. Your partner has tremendous artistic talent; you’ll create some impressive work together. Your warmth and generosity will attract an exciting educational opportunity toward the middle of the month. Taking a challenging course of study will give you the intellectual stimulation you crave
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)
A home improvement job will keep your spirits high at the beginning of September. The Full Moon on the 6th will prompt you to attend a gathering or get together, perhaps against the wishes of your romantic partner. It’s important to maintain ties with people who have loved and supported you for years. On the 20th, the New Moon will tempt you to take a gamble.
You can reach new career heights at the start of September. Thanks to your willingness to pitch in wherever needed, you’ll earn a big promotion. On the 6th, the Full Moon will tempt you to take a relaxing vacation. Heading off to a beautiful location by the sea will renew your zest for life. The New Moon on the 20th will mark changes to your social circle.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)
The Full Moon on the 6th will bring a career matter to a successful conclusion. You won’t be sure which direction to take after this door closes. Instead of pressuring yourself to take on more responsibility, enjoy your freedom. On the 20th, the New Moon may prompt you to look for another living situation
The opening days of September could very well be highly romantic. If you’re not in love already, you soon could be. The Full Moon on the 6th will bring the end of a job well done. On the 20th, the New Moon will bring an unpleasant work assignment and you’ll have no other choice but to accept this job. The position will be lots of work for very little money.
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) On the 6th, the Full Moon will prompt you to break out of a stifling routine and further your education. Take this opportunity to explore the potential of new ideas and technologies. Spending time with family will be rewarding at the middle of September. Don’t be surprised if a relative gives you a generous gift.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) You’ll be fairly and squarely in the spotlight at the beginning of September, which is just the way you like it. Accept an opportunity to go on an exciting trip. You’ll feel a financial pinch in the middle of the month. This is not a good time to indulge your love of luxury. By the 20th, the New Moon will prompt you to accept an unpleasant job.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) You’ll receive a surprising windfall at the beginning of September. Use this money to upgrade your car, computer or phone. Clashes with a conventional family member will occur at the middle of the month. Instead of seeking this relative’s approval, continue obeying your instincts. You’ll never see eye to eye with those who can’t see further than the end of their noses
Page 98 NWM 2017
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) Exciting family news will set off a string of celebrations in the early days of September. Petty arguments will be set aside for the sake of fun. On the 6th, you’ll get a chance to catch up on errands that have escaped your attention. The New Moon on the 20th could signal some legal difficulties. It may be better to ditch a dispute than pursue it in court.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) The Full Moon on the 6th will find you looking for ways to market your creative work. Whether you’re selling a book, jewellery or furniture, you can make a nice little profit. Taking a relaxing break will be fun during the middle of the month. If you’re looking for love, you could find it on a sun-drenched island.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) An unusual moneymaking opportunity will arrive in the opening days of the month. You’ll enjoy working for an offbeat company. On the 6th, the Full Moon will invite you to pamper yourself. Enjoy a spa treatment, gourmet meal, day away from work, or all three. The New Moon on the 20th could mark the beginning of an uneasy alliance.
