WELCOME! Hello and welcome to our brand new wedding supplement for 2018. As your North Wales Magazine wedding columnist, it gives me great pleasure in bringing to you this extra magazine focusing on all things wedding related.
For those who don’t know me, I’m Caroline Roberts, the owner of Events by Caroline Louise. The business was born in 2013 from my love of organising mixed with my goal of spreading a little bit of happiness wherever I go. I’m the longest established independent wedding planner in North Wales and I live in a lovely village by the North Wales coast with my husband – so I speak from both personal and professional experience. My love for weddings started way back when I was a small girl, as my mum had her very own bridal shop. My sisters and I would love nothing more than to see the brides arriving to pick up their unique handmade wedding gown. So, I guess my inspiration and drive to set up my own business has come from my hard-working parents. And in 2016 we introduced an exciting addition to the team, Bella, the Prosecco Van!
Bella (a classy black and gold Piaggio Ape van) is invited to attend all sorts of events throughout North Wales and she loves being invited to private do’s –especially weddings! She’s small enough to fit inside most venues and exudes the wow factor by providing fizz on tap. She is a unique and sophisticated way of treating your guests to a glass or two and she runs on love, laughter and, of course, Prosecco! WILL YOU MARRY ME? So you’ve just got engaged – congratulations! Understandably you’re on cloud nine and nobody can wipe the huge smile off your face right now. But what next? Planning a wedding is a huge deal – just where do you start? First things first, have you both decided whether you want a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony? The difference being, a civil ceremony is being married in the eyes of the law and the religious ceremony is being married in the eyes of the faith you follow. Your faith will also determine what ceremony you will have if you’re planning a same sex marriage, as some faiths will not allow a religious ceremony, meaning that you will need to book a civil ceremony. For couples who are having a religious ceremony, you will also need to check with the church you’re planning to marry at whether you need to book a local registrar. If this is the case, make sure you book both at the same time to avoid a change of date or time further down the line, which could be costly especially if you’ve sent out save the dates or your invites. Once you’ve made your decision on the type of ceremony you wish to go for, you can then choose your venue.
If you’re having a religious ceremony, you’ll need to look at the logistics between the church and the wedding reception venue. How long does it take to drive between the two and what is the maximum capacity for each, so you know how many guests to invite? And, if you’re having a civil ceremony and wedding reception both at the same venue, then you’ll also need to check what is the maximum number of people you can invite. You will also need to ensure that it has a suitable area for immediately after the ceremony where can your guests relax if the room needs to be turned around for your wedding breakfast. There are plenty of other questions to ask when it comes to choosing your wedding venue but, to start with, make sure you visit a variety of venues so you have enough information to compare different places and options. n

THE NUMBERS GAME So, what happens if you’ve found your dream venue but you have just discovered that it won’t accommodate the number of guests you had planned to invite? The good news is that there is no need to despair! Firstly, look at your guest numbers – have you included everyone and their dog? Remember wedding costs can run away with you if you’re not careful, so maybe it’s best to sit down together and look at your wedding numbers carefully. However, if you’re happy with the number of people you’ll be inviting to both the day and evening celebrations, and you’ve fallen in love with the venue, have you considered a marquee? Speak to your venue and ask if they’ve had weddings previously where they hired a marquee in order to accommodate numbers. If so, find out which suppliers they would recommend you contacting. It’s worth noting here that you need to speak to a couple of different marquee hire companies to ensure you obtain the right costs for the marquee you need. The majority of wedding marquee companies also hold an open event where they showcase their wedding marquee, and this also gives you the chance to speak directly to them, where they’ll be able to guide you through everything involved in choosing your marquee.
Remember, you need to ensure the cost you’re quoted from the marquee company includes the setup, take down, structure, additional panels (for example clear roof over the dance floor), interior items (such as lighting, doors, chairs tables etc), weather precautions, carpet, outside matting – and you’ll also need to check if you need a separate caterers marquee for your wedding day too! There are a huge variety of marquees available from trusted companies across North Wales, from tipis to stretch tents and traditional marquees to the London pagoda. Make sure you do your homework, so you know exactly what you want and check a supplier’s rating/customer review before confirming your booking. n

SLEEP TIGHT Some wedding venues will allow you exclusive use where you take all the rooms for your wedding, in which case you need to know how many rooms there are and be confident you can fill them, as you will be covering the cost. If your wedding venue doesn’t have enough rooms to sleep your immediate wedding party, you need to find out the nearest accommodation for them and the logistics of the night before and the night of the wedding. It might be best to confirm the rooms at your venue and rooms at nearby accommodation providers for your wedding party, before you announce the date and location. For all other guests you need to be mindful of where they’re travelling from. Are the majority travelling a distance where they’ll need to stay over the night or even two nights? If so, it would be best to include a couple of suggestions for your guests to stay along with the wedding invite, so they can arrange their own accommodation.
Before you sign on the dotted line with your chosen venue, make sure you’ve asked about accommodation for you, your wedding party and guests.
For a large majority of venues there will always be neighbouring hotels, B&B or selfcatering options available however, for those areas where you literally are in the middle of nowhere, you may also wish to consider organising a mini bus or coach for your guests. This can either be covered and organised through yourself or what would be better is asking one of your bridal party to organise this with guests, as you will have enough to organise and pay for on the day itself. And don’t forget you will always have some guests who are happy to drive no matter where you hold your wedding, so they may even be able to offer lifts for some other guests too! The main things you need to ensure is that you’re in love with your venue, your immediate wedding party can be catered for and there’s either enough accommodation in the locality or transport has been arranged to help your guests get to and from the wedding. n

BODLONDEB A tr u ly magica l s e tti ng. . . Couples can now tie the knot at Conwy's council offices in Bodlondeb. The grade-II listed Bodlondeb building and park in Conwy has launched as a wedding venue and will host marriages, civil ceremonies and private events from this summer.
The venue is nestled between the glorious mountains and golden sands of Conwy, with spectacular views over the estuary towards Llandudno and Deganwy. The town itself is a World Heritage Site, and Bodlondeb sits just outside of its majestic walls in acres of beautiful land unrivalled anywhere in the country. The magnificent gardens create a stunning background for a marquee, open-air celebrations, drinks receptions and photos capturing the occasion. Built in 1877 for Albert Wood, a member of the famous manufacturing family producing anchors and cables for Royal Navy ships and other vessels, the house was popular with the rich and famous. Visitors included the composer Sir Edward Elgar and Prime Minister David Lloyd George, though the owner was forced to turn away Queen Victoria as the house was too small to accommodate her entourage. We have a rich history, and you can be a part of it if you choose to spend your special day with us. Whether that be a wedding, civil or naming ceremony, anniversary or renewal of vows. Couples marrying at Bodlondeb will be surrounded by lead-coloured glass, vestibules and wooden beams. The bride can enter down the wide oak staircase or through panelled doors into the main lobby, where there is a Gothic fireplace, segmental arch and original marble floor, among other features.

The Gwenfrewi project is a hidden gem tucked away in the hills of North Wales. Dating back to the Bronze Age the site is surrounded by sacred yew trees 2500/3000 years old, there are also inscribed standing stones and an ancient burial mound.
