HILE the enormous work undertaken by many local communities and charitable organisations in the north-west in the provision of food supplies, clothing and other supports for Ukraine, in addition to the provision of accommodation for refugees, the extent to which our schools, primary and secondary, have taken in students from the warn-torn region has only been revealed this week. According to the Department of Education 6,000 Ukrainian pupils are now enrolled in Irish schools, and the numbers are growing steadily as more families seek accommodation and move on to seek education for their children. Counties in the north-west, particularly Mayo, Leitrim and Donegal, have been performing well above their weight in this regard and while it’s early days it’s inevitable others will follow suit and embrace people and children who may have much to offer local communities as they await for peace to return to their homeland. Figures released from the Department show that County Mayo has facilitated 186 Ukranian students (155 primary and 31 post-primary), Donegal schools have taken in 259 (176 primary and 83 post-primary), and Leitrim 95 (66 primary and 29 post primary), a creditable contribution from a county with probably the lowest population in the country. The figure for Sligo was 86 (50 and 36) while Roscommon embraced 73 students (64 and 9); Galway, of course, with a higher population, could facilitate over 300 (208 primary and 94 post primary). Bonniconlon ICA hosts EU50 Debate

Bonniconlon ICA held an historic debate in Bonniconlon Community Centre last weekend to mark Ireland's accession to the European Union 50 years ago (1972). Pride of Place Success for Ballina Community Clean-up

OR the second year running a group from Ballina has triumphed in the prestigious Pride of Place National Competition. The hard-working Ballina Community Clean-up Group secured the national award in the 5000+ population category at a special Awards Ceremony held in the INEC, Killarney, on Monday last, 16th February. It was a just reward for effort and commitment by a group, formed in 2019 with just six members for a Saturday morning litter pick-up, and growing to over 300 people who, over a few years have worked, sometimes in difficult circumstances in the middle of a pandemic, to transform their native town. The Pride of Place Award acknowledges and celebrates the work that communities do all over the island of Ireland. In essence the mission of the Ballina group is a true reflection of what the Award itself is all about: “to enhance the presentation, cleanliness, biodiversity and heritage of our town and help make Ballina a wonderful place to live, work, discover and enjoy”. While the litter pick remains at the core of activities for Ballina Community Cleanup there is also painting, sweeping, cleaning, planting, creating art, fundraising, promoting awareness of biodiversity and lots more. The initiative

was designed to improve Ballina as a community and a tourist town, to encourage civic pride, and to bring people together to enjoy and appreciate their town and create positive change. The pandemic actually encouraged many more people to get involved; it is truly a whole-of-town effort in a very welcoming and inclusive group. Construction work is about to start on their biggest project, Ballina Sensory Park in collaboration with Mayo County Council, for which €65,000 was raised during a special Freeze4February dip in 2021 with over 1,000 people participating. The group has been an inspiration for others. What started as a highly motivated environmental initiative has become so much more. Barriers have been broken down, local business has engaged, volunteerism is on the increase and many excellent projects have started. Above all there is participation from across the entire community. They have managed to secure bottomup/top down support for their endeavours and their work continues as they, in partnership with others, play a central role in Ballina’s quest to achieve the accolade of Ireland’s Greenest Town. They are grateful for the support they have received from so many groups and local businesses in helping them achieve so much in a short time.

numbers at this time. It is worth remembering that before the Ukrainian families started seeking refuge in Ireland in early March, following the Russian invasion of their country, there were about 25,000 spare places in primary schools and about 15,000-18,000 in post-primary schools.

Afri Famine Walk Returns to Mayo this Saturday After 3 decades on the road and two years online (due to Covid) the Famine Walk returns to Mayo on Saturday, May 21st 2022. Retracing the steps of several hundred people who made this journey in search of food during An Gorta Mór, walkers will make their way through the spectacular Doolough Valley in the course of this iconic journey. Walk leaders this year include Catherine Connolly TD, author and activist Robbie McVeigh and Community Worker Homayoon Shiraz. Music will be provided by Co. Mayo-based musician Patrick O'Laoghaire. This year Afri’s late patron Desmond Tutu will be remembered, as will Afri friend, the late great songwriter Pete St. John. The famine walk began in 1988 and has been led in the past by figures like Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Christy Moore, journalist John Pilger, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Arun Gandhi, actor Gabriel Byrne, Michael Davitt’s granddaughter Gráinne, and Kim Phuc, the Vietnamese woman who was pictured as a child in that iconic photo where she ran from a napalm attack. Speaking in advance of this year’s Afri Coordinator Joe Murray says interest in the annual walk is strong this year, with walkers keen to get back on the road after an absence of two years. “So many of us were disappointed to miss out on this unique event during the

Credit Union Survey Electronic payments company CUSOP commissioned a survey of 1000 people in Ireland, which highlights the high level of trust among the public in the credit union movement, and Sligo Credit Union in particular. Statistics reveal that: 90% of people in Sligo trust their local credit union more than their local bank. 76% of people in Sligo would prefer to speak to someone in a local branch than a digital-only bank. Over 90% of people in Sligo pay for most items with a Debit Card, and 71% of people would use a credit union for a debit card or current account if they didn’t already have one. ‘We Are Mayo’ book launched in County Library

book showcasing all that is good about county Mayo written by two proud Mayo men was launched in Castlebar Library last week by Ireland’s First Woman, Sabina Higgins. The book, “We Are Mayo”, for which Sabina provided a foreward, was co-written by Charlestown native Tom Brett and wellknown Mayo and Islandeady-based journalist, Tom Rice. The publication is a coffee-table style book built around a simple formula incorporating sections dealing with our geographic location in the world, our history, our infrastructure, our sporting and

other legends both young and old – all brought together by the great accident of our birth or choice of residence in our unique and beautiful county on the west coast of Ireland. It was a heart-warming occasion, with Seán Rice welcoming Sabina to Castlebar and thanking her for making the journey from Dublin to officially launch ‘We Are Mayo’. “As you will have noticed, Sabina contributed the foreword to our book about growing up in her native Ballindine and its surroundings. Her lovely writing style adorns the introduction evoking

memories of the rural customs of her time and the values that shaped her upbringing,” said Seán, who added that the that the book was the brainchild of Tom Brett. “It was to have been launched in the spring of 2020, but Covid intervened. Tom was in lockdown in Australia and we were in lockdown in Mayo. This was the first opportunity we got to baptise it. It was in his frequent travels from Fremantle in western Australia to his native Charlestown that the seed for ‘We Are Mayo’ was sown and where it sprouted and was nurtured. He was anxious to have the beauty of this county and the grandeur of its people recorded in a publication that truly reflected all those attributes.” Seán also said that Tom Brett had put a lot of work into the publication. “His love for Mayo is encapsulated in every chapter, and in the immense efforts he has made in producing a written and photographic record of the county in keeping with its beauty and mores. “Our first meeting happened when we were a lot younger. He was studying for his masters in sociology at UCG, and was giving lectures to an extra-mural class studying for a diploma in social action. He traced me to The Mayo News some years ago and our collaboration continued via email.” Tom Brett thanked the big audience for their attendance and also all the contributors to the book, in particular all those who gave their photography free of charge. “I have to say the Sabina’s foreword has been very favourably commented upon and the other thing that people often say to me is that the book is surprisingly good and I am proud of that.” ‘We Are Mayo’ is available in all good book shops across the county or online at https://www.wearemayobook.net.

Increased campaigning for Family Resource Centre in Erris region

THE campaign to highlight the urgent need for a community and family resource centre in Mayo's Erris region has gathered momentum in recent weeks. The steering committee have completed a comprehensive strategic plan which will form the main component of their proposal to the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. A petition has been live for a number of weeks, for the attention of Minister Roderic O’Gorman, the CEO of Tusla, and the four TDs who represent Co. Mayo. Thus far there are over 2,000 signatures. Last week, the committee completed the final of five community information meetings hosted in each of the five Erris parishes. One of the most vital aspects of the campaign to secure a family and community resource centre for Erris is support from the local community. Public meetings were held in Kilmore (Halla Naomh Brendáin), Belmullet (Áras Inis Gluaire), Kiltane (Geesala Community Centre), Kilcommon (Teach Greannaí) and Ballycroy (Ballycroy Community Centre). The parish meetings revealed that the need for an FRC in Erris is stronger than ever. Those in attendance told of their lived experiences with respect to the gaps in services and supports, and how it has impacted on their lives and well-being. Personal stories were shared, with both hope and regret for the desperate need to bring a much-needed resource to this extremely isolated region.

The strongest themes that arose across all the meetings were in relation to the vast size of the barony, and the isolation and lack of services as a result. Attendees and committee members agreed the importance of having a fully resourced and fully staffed centre to meet the needs of the region. One attendee explained: “Volunteers are burnt out and it’s not fair to expect the same people who put themselves forward to come out again and support so many people in such a huge area.” Another person said, poignantly: “There are no community mental health supports – people are very alone and isolated. There are people dead today who might still be here if they had somewhere local to go, or someone to

talk to here in our area.” Leanne Barrett, chairperson of the steering committee, said: “A family and community resource centre would serve to fill some of the many gaps that exist locally, and would ensure that the area has the services and supports that people need, under the one roof. In addition, once we establish an FRC in Erris, it would act as a catalyst for further community development – more family, community, mental health and wellbeing supports can be developed locally.” Ms. Barrett concluded: “The FRC programme works cooperatively and in partnership with people to address marginalisation and disadvantage. This model works in many communities like Erris all around the country.”

he 8th Sligo Engineering & Technology Expo returned to an all in-person event and welcomed its largest attendance ever in Sligo earlier this month. Over 1,200 visitors to the Expo enjoyed an array of talks and projects including robotics, automated machinery and smart-home devices. The Expo, which is sponsored by global healthcare company Abbott, offers potential engineering and computing students the opportunity to interact with leading engineering and technology companies from across Ireland and showcasing projects from Atlantic TU Sligo final year students. Over 100 final year students presented their projects which included some projects that reflect a changing world with; Social Distance Detectors, Cryptocurrency wallet and car-pooling app. Climate change was also a key theme at the event with projects on floating offshore wind turbines and low energy heating systems. Some of the other unique exhibits included an electronic guide dog and a

smart toaster that will end the age-old problem of burnt toast! Among the award winning exhibitors presented by the President of Atlantic TU, Dr Orla Flynn were: Emma Murphy for her E Health Homeostasis Using Machine Learning; Gary McCormack for Original Climate, Bernard Wilkie for Mapping & Autonomous Geo-locating Integrated E-vehicle (MAGIE); and Kevin Reilly for The Impact of Applying Lean Construction on the Planning & Implementation Phase of a Construction Project. traffic accident in March 2021. Mr Healy was a much loved student and colleague and is remembered fondly by everyone who knew him. The award was set up by Abbott to remember the young father of one from Roscommon. Head of Faculty of Engineering and Design at ATU Sligo, Úna Parsons said: “The showcase highlighted our fabulous student projects, a stellar line-up of industry talks and superb insights into the research our faculty are involved in. It was wonderful to see so many secondary school students, their parents and the public in attendance. The industry stands were a hive of interactions. I was delighted to learn how many job offers were made between our students and industry.” Congratulating the winning students, Ms Parsons added: “I want to say a big thank you to all who made this event such a success – our students, staff, industry, key sponsor Abbott and talks partner the AIM Centre (Advancing Innovation in Manufacturing Supply Chain) . ‘Six Days’ play comes to Enniscoe A s part of this year's Cultural Programme the play ‘Six Days’ will come to The Conference Centre at Enniscoe on Friday 20th May as part of a 13 date Nationwide tour which will finish in the Town hall, Westport .The play was written, directed and performed by Frank Shouldice and tells the story of his Grandfather during the 1916 Easter Rising Dublin Brigade's 1st Battalion at the Four Courts was the last Volunteer garrison to lay down its arms in the Easter Rising. Having faced incredible odds all week the battle for North King Street did not end when Padraig Pearse issued an order to surrender. It was, for those who lived through it, an experience they would never forget. Using spoken word and original music Chambermade Productions presents SIX DAYS, a highly evocative re-imagining of those incredible events. Based largely on the personal accounts of those who took part SIX DAYS will be performed by writer/director Frank, whose grandfather was a sniper at the Jameson Malthouse in Smithfield. The framework is about planning when and where human activities take place at sea and ensuring these activities are as efficient and sustainable as possible. The competition was open to schools taking part in the Green-Schools Marine Environment theme, which

encourages schools to discover how their work on the GreenSchools programme has positively, influenced people and their local environment while focusing on our oceans and seas. As part of their work on the Marine Environment theme schools are asked to investigate the sources of marine litter, take part in a #2minutebeachclean and carry out a Marine Litter Awareness survey. The results of this survey in 2022 have shown that schools made great strides in learning about marine issues, increasing their knowledge of reasons why marine litter is bad for the environment from 44% to 85% and strengthening their awareness of the ways in way climate change affects the marine environment from 35% to 74%.

Fifteen (15) tourism companies from Ireland – including Ashford Castle – joined Tourism Ireland recently at the inaugural Discover Europe Travel Summit in Dubai. Discover Europe Travel Summit was a two-day B2B tourism event organised by Tourism Ireland, in conjunction with the German National Tourist Board, Switzerland Tourism and the Austrian National Tourist Office. The event brought together a delegation of 97 exhibitors from Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Austria to meet, and do business with, more than 100 travel buyers from the GCC.

Cave Excavation Reveals Conditions of IRA Cave Hideout During Civil War in Sligo

n an exciting new project, a Sligo-based team have completed the excavation of a cave used during the Civil War as an anti-Treaty IRA hideout. The project, funded by Atlantic Technological University (ATU), reveals a forgotten story in Sligo’s recent history, in what is the first research excavation of a Civil War site in Ireland. The team of three archaeologists – Dr Marion Dowd (ATU), Robert Mulraney (Independent Researcher) and Dr James Bonsall (Fourth Dimension Prospection Ltd.) – spent over a week excavating a small cave high in the Dartry Mountains overlooking Glencar Lake in north County Sligo. The cave was used as a hideout during the War of Independence and was the principal hideout of the North Sligo anti-Treaty IRA during the Civil War. In September 1922, the National Army closed in on the anti-treaty IRA headquarters at Rahelly House north of Sligo town. After an intense firefight, approximately 60 men evacuated the house, making for Benbulben, with the intention of crossing the mountains to reach the safety of Tormore Cave – better known as the ‘Glencar hideout’. Several IRA men were captured on the mountains and imprisoned by the National Army. Six men were shot and killed at two different locations in the uplands. These men - Brigadier Seamus Devins, Divisional Adjutant Brian MacNeill, Lieutenant Patrick Carroll, Volunteer Joseph Banks, Captain Harry Benson and Volunteer Thomas Langan became known as Sligo’s Noble Six. A further 34 men successfully reached Tormore Cave and lived there for the following six weeks. The men were never discovered, making this one of the most successful hideouts of the entire revolutionary period in Ireland. Following the Civil War, the location of Tormore Cave was lost. In the mid 1930s, however, General Officer Commanding William Pilkington, one of the men who had hid there in 1922, returned to Sligo and revealed its location. During his time in the cave, he had nursed an injury to his shoulder which had he broken during recent fighting. Anecdotal accounts recollect that while in the cave, Pilkington vowed to become a priest if he survived the war. This he did, and went on to be ordained as a Redemptorist priest serving in Cape Town, South Africa and England. Archaeological excavations The archaeological excavations sought to document the hideout and learn more about how it was utilised as part of guerrilla tactics. The excavations revealed

that the cave had been modified and prepared for usage, probably during the War of Independence. A large boulder was strategically placed at the entrance. On either side of this, stones were piled against the cave walls and fixed with mortar. This served to conceal the cave entrance making the hideout extremely difficult to find. It is likely that a sentry was positioned inside the cave behind the boulder, from where he commanded expansive views over the surrounding landscape. Inside, excavations through soil layers revealed a series of constructed steps leading from the entrance into the cave. With further excavation it was found that the men had also prepared a mortar-surfaced floor, layered over with flagstones, in a similar way to traditional Irish cottages of the 1920s. A mortared wall was also built to enclose the space. This construction would have

served to keep the living space clean and created a warmer and drier surface for men sleeping there. But it was far from luxurious: The 34 men endured harsh conditions in the cave. They could not light fires as the smoke would attract attention. They had to survive with little food, cramped into a small, damp and dark cave for many weeks. Artefacts discovered The excavations produced almost 200 artefacts. ‘This is the first archaeological excavation of a Civil War site in Ireland’, Dr Marion Dowd of Atlantic Technological University commented. ‘Many people knew that a mountain cave had been used as a hideout for six weeks, but almost no one knew where it was located. Because so few people have visited the cave over the past 100 years, the site was essentially a Civil War time

capsule. The structures and artefacts we discovered were as they had been left when the men abandoned the cave in October 1922’. Sherds of pottery and glass were recovered that related to food brought by local families to feed the men. ‘Much of the pottery probably came from Sarah Branley’s kitchen’, Dr James Bonsall explained. ‘The Branleys lived a short walk from the cave and two of Sarah’s sons, Paddy and Dominick, were hiding in the cave. One of the main problems the men encountered was Trenchfoot, caused by prolonged exposure in damp conditions. Apparently Sarah tended to the men’s feet on at least one occasion when some of them left the cave during a bad storm and came to her house.’ ‘We also found several personal items that give us an insight into the men’ said caver and

archaeologist Robert Mulraney. ‘We found a boot lace, a belt buckle and a clay pipe. As part of the project, we are trying to identify the men who sought refuge in the cave, who survived the ordeal and who then became largely forgotten. So far we have identified seven men and have been speaking with their relatives’. The team hope that people who had relatives that stayed in the cave will contact them. ‘This is not just a Sligo story. We have had contact from people in Boston (USA), London, and Counties Galway, Down and Dublin whose father, grandfather, uncle or granduncle stayed in the cave during the Civil War. he new Kia EV6 has been awarded the prestigious Continental Tyres Irish Car of the Year 2022 title, with the EV6 having also won the Continental Tyres Irish Large Car category award at the award ceremony on February 11th. It is the second time that an electric vehicle has taken the award as Kia also won the 2020 Irish Car of the Year title with the all-electric Kia e-Soul.

Modern Design Inside & Out Kia’s new EV6 electric SUV has a bold, conventional, modern design and is proving itself to be an amazing family car in every respect. The EV6 is the first bespoke electric car developed by Kia and sits on an all-new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which will see Kia launch another seven E-GMP-based models over the next five years. The EV6 is a surprisingly large car, and being 4,695mm in length and 1,890mm in width, it is a halfway house between a family SUV and a regular family hatchback. Although the EV6 has a lot in common with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, it is not a cloned version of its cousin. Super-Fast Charging Capability The EV6 has two features that make it stand out from similarly priced alternatives, the first being the impressive super-fast charging rate of 350kW, which means the battery can be topped up from 10%-80% in as little as 18 minutes, or a 100km range could be achieved in as little as four minutes at a supercharger station. In the past it was hard to find public charging stations capable of delivering that much power, but a lot of the new service stations now

have superchargers available. The second is what is called a vehicleto-load (V2L) system which means that the EV6 can power household items, such as a kettle or microwave, or even charge another EV from its charge port. This could prove invaluable in a power cut, or when having a picnic.

Two Trim Levels Presently, there are two trim levels in EV6; Earth and GT Line, with one battery choice. The Earth model sits on 19-inch alloy wheels and has a full charge range of up to 528kms, while the GT Line comes with 20inch alloy wheels and can achieve up to 506kms from a single charge. Additionally, drivers can use paddles on the steering wheel, along with the option of three driving profiles, if they want to change the amount of energy the car uses and retrieves as you slow down. However, it is easier, and more efficient, to let the EV6 work it out for you. The car will take into account the distance to other traffic, your speed, hills and curves before making a decision about the best way to use energy. It is so sensitive that it will make drivers who have never driven an electric car feel instantly comfortable. The EV6 features a 77.4 kWh long-range battery pack paired with a 229PS (226bhp) electric motor, while a heat pump also comes as standard. The EV6 Earth comes with a host of comfort, convenience and safety features as standard including Dual 12.3-inch Curved Driver Display Screens, UVO Connect, charcoal grey vegan leather upholstery with Premium Relaxation Seats (electrically operated and heated in the front),

memory driver’s seat, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, rear privacy glass, flush door handles, satellite navigation, adaptive cruise control, LED headlamps and a Smart Power Tailgate. Upgrading to the GT Line brings with it a panoramic sunroof, remote smart parking, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, GT styling pack, adaptive LED lights, blind spot monitoring system, head-

up display, suede/vegan leather interior, and a 360-degree surround view monitor. The generous 2.9metre wheelbase in the EV6 ensures excellent head, leg, and elbow room for front seat occupants and, with no need to house a central transmission tunnel, the EV6’s flat floor provides exceptional space and comfort for rear seat occupants too. North West Simon Community Dip and Donate 2022 Take Advantage of the Longest Day of the Year to Help Those at Risk of Homelessness in the North West Region

oin North West Simon Community Dip & Donate Challenge from 17th – 21st June, ending on the longest day of the year, to help raise vital funds to sustain the Early Intervention and Homeless Prevention Service. For many of us, the Summer Solstice (June 21st) symbolises the start of summer, a day to enjoy with friends and family. When you’re homeless, you are more concerned with finding a roof over your head, which is why the funding is crucial for the vital work and services provided to prevent and resolve homelessness throughout Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim. There has never been a more pressing time to stand together to help the most vulnerable in our society. The North West Simon Community are heavily reliant on donations from fundraising events and need your support now more than ever. In 2021 the charity supported 414 individuals from 216 unique households that were comprised of 246 adults and 168 children. “Embrace the rush of endorphins as you enter the water and cherish the feel-good factor of knowing you’re helping prevent and resolve homelessness in your local Community”. WHEN YOU EAT MATTERS: How Your Eating Rhythms Impact Your Mental Health

ating is an essential part of human life and it turns out that not only what we eat but when we eat can impact our brains. Irregular eating times have been shown to contribute to poor mental health, including depression and anxiety, as well as to cardio-metabolic diseases and weight gain. Fortunately, it is possible to leverage our eating rhythms to limit negative mood and increase mental health. As a doctoral student in the field of neuropsychiatry and a psychiatrist studying nutrition and mood disorders, our research focuses on investigating how eating rhythms impact the brain. Here’s how it all works: The circadian clock system is responsible for aligning our

internal processes at optimal times of day based on cues from the environment such as light or food. Humans have evolved this wiring to meet energy needs that change a lot throughout the day and night, creating a rhythmic pattern to our eating habits that follows the schedule of the sun. Although the main clock manages metabolic function over the day-night cycle, our eating rhythms also impact the main clock. Digestive tissues have their own clocks and show regular oscillations in functioning over the 24-hour cycle. For example, the small intestine and liver vary throughout the day and night in terms of digestive, absorptive and metabolic capacity. When the main circadian clock in the brain is out of sync with

eating rhythms, it impacts the brain’s ability to function fully. Even though the brain is only two per cent of our total body mass, it consumes up to 25 per cent of our energy and is particularly affected by changes in calorie intake. This means that abnormal meal times are bound to have negative health outcomes. Food and Mood Although the underlying mechanisms are still unknown, there is overlap between neural circuits governing eating and mood. Also, digestive hormones exert effects on dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a large role in mood, energy and pleasure. Individuals with depression and bipolar disorder have abnormal dopamine levels. Altered eating rhythms are thought to contribute to the poor maintenance of mood. Irregular eating may even play a role in the complex underlying causes of mood disorders. For example, individuals with depression or bipolar disorder exhibit disturbed internal rhythms and irregular meal times, which significantly worsen mood symptoms. In addition, shift

workers — who tend to have irregular eating schedules — demonstrate increased rates of depression and anxiety when compared to the general population. Despite this evidence, assessing eating rhythms is not currently part of standard clinical care in most psychiatric settings.

Optimizing eating rhythms So, what can be done to optimize our eating rhythms? One promising method we have encountered in our research is time-restricted eating (TRE), also known as intermittent fasting. TRE involves restricting the eating window to a certain amount of time during the day, typically four to 12 hours. For example, choosing to eat all meals and snacks in a 10-hour window from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. reflects an overnight fasting period. Evidence suggests that this method optimizes brain function, energy metabolism and the healthy signalling of metabolic hormones.TRE has already been shown to prevent depressive and anxiety symptoms in animal studies designed to model shift work. The antidepressant effects of TRE

have also been shown in humans. Eating on a regular schedule is also beneficial to reduce the risk of health issues such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Circadian rhythms in a 24-hour world We live in a 24-hour world filled with artificial light and round-theclock access to food. That makes the effects of disturbed eating rhythms on mental health an important topic for modern life. As more research provides data assessing eating rhythms in individuals with mood disorders, incorporating eating rhythm treatment into clinical care could significantly improve patient quality of life. For the general population, it is important to increase public knowledge on accessible and affordable ways to maintain healthy eating. This includes paying attention not only to the content of meals but also to eating rhythms. Aligning eating rhythms with the schedule of the sun will have lasting benefits for general wellbeing and may have a protective effect against mental illness.
