IRO, the broadband network operator, has today launched its 100% fibre broadband network in Ballina. The network will see the company bring its world-class connectivity to more than 3,500 premises in the town, with a €4 million investment. The broadband network for Ballina was officially launched by the cathaoirleach of Ballina Municipal District, Councillor Mark Duffy, at an event in The Great National Hotel Ballina this morning. The launch in Ballina follows on from SIRO’s October 2021 announcement where it outlined its plans to connect 90 additional towns and 770,000 premises across Ireland with its fibre-to-the-premise broadband by 2026. The company’s total investment in broadband infrastructure across 154 Irish towns will exceed €1 billion - to deliver its future-proofed, sustainable broadband infrastructure. SIRO is a joint venture broadband company between ESB and Vodafone. Since its’ establishment in 2015, SIRO has to date rolled out its network to 65 towns, reaching more than 430,000 homes and businesses and almost one million people. Across Mayo and the west, SIRO has already connected tens of thousands of homes and businesses in Castlebar, Westport, Galway, and Sligo. Ballina will be the latest Mayo town to receive its 100% fibre broadband. Consumers and businesses will be able to order SIRO’s broadband from September 2022, with network roll out to complete by the end of this year. Continued on page 2

€4m broadband network investment for Ballina Continued from front page
The first areas in Ballina that can avail of up to 2 Gigabits per second broadband include Cluain Na Rí, The Spires, Robin Hill, Church Manor, Healy Terrace, Oakwood Drive and Brae View. SIRO’s state-of-the-art fibre broadband network is built on the ESB electricity infrastructure, trusted for its’ reliability and resilience. Indigo, Richard Nolan and CBE are the contractors on the ground in Ballina working with SIRO to ‘light up’ the town with high-speed fibre broadband. Speaking at the launch, SIRO CEO John Keaney said: “High quality connectivity is a key enabler for economic growth, and particularly for regional towns like Ballina. The pandemic proved that work from anywhere, once there is access to reliable and future proofed broadband, is now possible. Access to high-quality connectivity is a game changer which
allows regional towns to compete, on an equal footing, with our cities for inward investment and job creation. It’s also an important service to have available for tourists and visitors to Ballina. “Since 2015, SIRO has worked to bring world-class fibre connectivity to the heart of towns across Ireland. Our objective is to ensure our fibre broadband empowers people to work and live how and where they want and businesses to access the connectivity needed to operate with ease and efficiency. “We are pleased to be extending our footprint further today by adding over 3,500 Ballina premises to our network, in addition to our existing presence in Westport and Castlebar.” Councillor Mark Duffy added: “Over the last number of years, Ballina has benefitted hugely as people have migrated west, either moving back home
and/or leaving cities for a better quality of life. Investment in fibre broadband, like SIRO’s full fibre network, will keep them in Ballina. “SIRO’s network and investment helps Ballina realise its’ full potential allowing people to stay connected and ensuring they can live, work and visit the town.” SIRO’s broadband network is currently available to 430,000 homes and businesses, growing to 770,000 over the next four years. SIRO as an open access wholesaler, partners with 19 broadband retailers across Ireland, to ensure that customers and businesses enjoy greater choice and competition. Retailers available in Ballina will be: Digiweb, Sky, Vodafone, Fastcom, PureTelecom, Westnet, and Viatel. First homes and premises will be live in September. St. Angela’s College top ranking higher education institution in new social mobility rankings
A
newly published report by the Oireachtas Parliamentary Budget Office highlights that St. Angela’s College, Sligo is the highest ranked higher education institutions in Ireland for in the new social mobility rankings. This significant recognition is a testament to the College’s reputation of high standard education, the career earnings of graduates and the investment by the College in supporting students from socio disadvantaged backgrounds to enable them to successfully progress through their university education. The report demonstrates that, relative to size, St. Angela’s College is the strongest performer and ranks first in both progression of students and earnings and 10th in participation, resulting in the topranking higher education institution overall for social mobility. Beating off stiff competition from Trinity College Dublin, graduates from St. Angela’s College earn more than any other institution in the years immediately after graduation ensuring St. Angela’s ranked number one in terms of earnings of graduates. The College also ranked number one in student progression.
The rankings are based on the proportion of students from disadvantaged backgrounds in individual colleges, dropout rates and graduates’ earnings a year after graduation. College President, Dr Amanda McCloat explains “these rankings show the importance of investment in education and the different ways that success, in terms of education provision, can be measured. Importantly, it shows the real value of education and the difference it can make to people’s lives”. Dr McCloat notes “we are proud of our reputation for providing a high standard of university education and these new rankings are testament to the quality and success of our graduates when they gain employment. To be the top-ranked institution across two of the three categories is an incredible achievement for an institution of our size and reflects the quality of education provided by our team of dedicated and talented staff”. In 2021, St. Angela’s launched its National Centre of Excellence for Home Economics, providing a key platform for the future growth and development of the academic discipline as well as building on its
renowned reputation of teacher education. Each year the college attracts students from across Ireland and not just the local catchment area which allows St. Angela’s to maintain its credible status nationwide, an aspect highlighted in the report. Students considering their CAO Change of Mind options can choose from a range of undergraduate programmes at St. Angela’s this

Westport boxers honoured by county council
W
estport boxers Laura Moran and Shannon Sweeney were last week honoured by the local community, their families, friends and politicians from across the district. It was a special moment for the girls after their award-winning performances at the European Championships. Cathaoirleach of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District Cllr Brendan Mulroy was on hand to express the community’s admiration for the boxers and their achievements. Laura Moran won a silver medal and Shannon Sweeney is the Irish Elite champion and also won a gold medal at a prestigious multi-nations’ championship in Europe. Cllr Mulroy recalled the great people who had gone before. He spoke about sports’ power for good and the pride people felt when Laura and Shannon stepped between the ropes. “I was in a pub in England the day Laura was fighting in the European final. I was sitting there watching her fight on my phone and amazingly there were three other people there doing the same thing. That’s the power of sport. It reaches people and places you’d never expect.” Cllr Mulroy went on to thank all who work tirelessly throughout the community in the various sports clubs and organisations. “Countless people give of their time so that others can benefit from the joy of sport and that’s certainly the case in St Anne’s – a club blessed with the finest of people,” he stated before challenging the duo to reach even greater heights. “We’ll be back here again in the coming years, out on the balcony celebrating when

No pressure girls!” Former Irish champion and current coach at St Anne’s, Martin Brennan, then took to the stage and described the joy the two boxers had brought to everyone and the years of effort it took to achieve what they have. “These medals are earned a long way away from the ring on the day of competition. It takes years of dedication – personal dedication to achieve what Laura and Shannon have. They train on their own most of the time and it takes huge mental strength to keep going year after year. They’re an absolute inspiration to the rest of

Many from the Mayo boxing fraternity were present at the reception including former Irish Olympic team manager Seán Horkan and members of Geesala BC. Also present were councillors Gerry Coyle, Christy Hyland, Peter Flynn, John O’Malley while apologies were received from councillors Seán Carey and Paul McNamara.
Pioneering Mayo doctor remembered on commemorative plaque
A COMMEMORATIVE plaque has been unveiled to Killala (Mayo) native Dr. Kathleen Lynn and her partner Madeleine French-Mullen who cofounded the first infant hospital in Ireland. They established St. Ultan’s Children’s Hospital in Dublin in 1919, and a plaque to remember their legacy was unveiled on the building where it was based by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Alison Gilliland, at the weekend. St. Ultan's itself closed in 1984 and the property is now a hotel. Dr. Lynn, a medical and political pioneer, was born in Killala in 1874. She was so greatly affected by the poverty and disease among the poor that followed the years of the Great Famine that, aged 16, she decided to become a doctor. She was chief medical officer of the Irish Citizen’s Army, based at City Hall, during the Easter Rising. Following her death in 1955, she was buried with full military honours for the role she played in the Rising at Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin. Commenting on Twitter, Councillor Gilliland voiced her support that the new National Children’s Hospital be named after Dr. Lynn, noting: 'What more fitting name and acknowledgement of how we’d want that hospital to be run!

Sligo's Lough Gill Distillery bought by The Sazerac Company
T
he owner of the Lough Gill Distillery in Co Sligo has been bought by The Sazerac Company, one of the world's biggest distilled spirits companies. Sazerac brands include Paddy Irish Whiskey, Michael Collins Irish Whiskey, Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon and Southern Comfort. Under the terms of the deal for Hazelwood Demesne, The Sazerac Company plans to fully develop the more than 100 acre site, the original demesne of Hazelwood House, to create a new whiskey facility and visitor attraction. When finished, Lough Gill Distillery hopes to welcome up to 150,000 visitors annually and will create a homeplace for Sazerac's Irish whiskeys, Paddy and Michael Collins. It also plans to significantly grow the footprint of Lough Gill Distillery through increasing the distillery's capacity, adding warehousing capacity and expanding production and bottling lines. All current Lough Gill Distillery team members will remain with the business, and it is expected that Sazerac will increase employment after the expansion. Also, as part of the acquisition, Sazerac will continue the development of the new Athrú whiskey brand, including global distribution. "In particular, the history of the Lough Gill Distillery, dating back to the 18th century, will be an integral keystone in the restoration and storytelling of this site. We look forward to preserving the history, delighting our future visitors by the stories we share, and further expanding the growth opportunities for Paddy, Michael Collins and Athrú Whiskeys," he added. Lough Gill Distillery also announced last week that former Bushmills Master Blender, Helen Mulholland, is joining the team in Sligo. Optional standalone modules can also be taken and when combined over time, can build towards a postgraduate qualification.
With some programmes delivered fully online, others continue to be delivered using a blended learning approach, allowing students to meet and work with their peers in small group settings. “Our postgraduate and part-time programmes have been designed in such a way that those with busy working lives or family commitments can choose to study at their own pace” explains Dr Amanda McCloat, College President. “Our blended learning model means that occasionally, students get to meet and interact - it can be a chance to share ideas and network in professional and likeminded circles something we have greatly missed in recent years”. All programmes are university accredited
and students commencing their studies in September 2022 will qualify with an Atlantic Technological University award. Dr McCloat continues “for anyone considering postgraduate or part-time studies this year, you’re joining us at a very exciting time as we continue to develop our programmes, research and collaboration with colleagues across the Atlantic TU, particularly the Sligo campus. As ever, our dedicated staff will be there to support all of our postgraduate and part-time students every step of their academic journey at St. Angela’s”. Ballina’s Cara is Lady of the Moy
T
he traditional pre–Salmon Festival warm-up, the annual Lady of the Moy competition, took place in the Great National Hotel Ballina, on Saturday night past, hosting a night of glitz and glamour that saw local lady Cara Martin, representing Connacht Distillery, claim the crown. The Lady of the Moy will represent Ballina Salmon Festival during festival week as well as acting as an ambassador for the town throughout the year, including representing Ballina Salmon Festival in the Mayo Rose competition. Holding the title of Lady of the Moy is regarded as an honour for the winning lady that offers great opportunities for networking, development, as well as many fun, memorable occasions throughout the year. Sponsored by Allure Hair and Beauty, Dr Lisa Guthrie and Ballina Chamber, and supported by others, this year the competition boasted 12 contestants in total, each representing a local business or group. The contest was judged by Donnacha Roache (Mayo Rose Centre, Rose of Tralee Festival), Martha Galvin (Allure Hair & Beauty Salon), and Elaine Armstrong (Spa Manager Ice House). Master of Ceremonies on the night, local DJ Paul Bourke ensured the participants enjoyed the on-stage interview keeping the banter and conversation flowing, and guiding them through their stint on stage. Most sang, danced, or recited poetry, showing once again the level of talent that exists in Ballina. Each girl also completed an individual interview with the judges. Winner Cara Martin, who performed a poem given to her by her Leaving Cert English teacher, Mrs Henry, is second year student of Business and Event Management in Technological University of Shannon. She is travelling to Valencia, Spain, on an Erasmus programme in September, and is a passionate ambassador for her hometown of Ballina while studying in Limerick. Cara is youth advocate for Epilepsy Ireland, having been diagnosed with the condition during her Leaving Cert year, and has raised thousands for the charity over
Cara Martin, Lady of the Moy 2022, representing Connacht Distillery. the previous years, climbing Croke Patrick and organising fund-raising events in Ballina and Limerick. Cara’s family has a strong history of involvement with the festival, and she expressed her delight at being able to take an active role in this year’s celebrations, especially after the absence of the festival during the previous three years. Said Cara: "I’ll never forget the experience of taking part in this event and the support I received on the night, from

my employers and sponsors Connacht Distillery, from the audience and my family especially. I’m blown away by the level of beautiful messages I’ve received since Saturday night. It means so much to me to be involved given the involvement of my family over the past thirty years and I am so proud to represent my town for the coming year." Indeed, Cara and Paul joked during her on stage interview that in previous years she understood the amount of background work that’s goes into preparing for the festival, as she had hung flags and dressed up on National Heritage Day. She certainly won’t be hanging flags for this year’s festival. Event organiser Mary Moyles, manager of The Cot and Cobble: "The Lady of the Moy gives these young women a fantastic opportunity and the confidence they gain from standing up in front of their town is wonderful. They are all so proud to represent their town and their businesses. In our eyes they are all winners and young women our town can be proud of." The Lady of the Moy competition was supported by several local businesses. Allure Hair and Beauty, and Dr Lisa Guthrie were the main sponsors, providing the main prizes, as well as The Cot and Cobble. The event was also supported by hosts the Great National Hotel, Ballina Chamber of Commerce, Rouses Jewellers, Gerry McGuires, Wards Pharmacy, Ballina Blossoms, Boots, Molloys Pharmacy, Connacht Distillery, The Ice House, Goldtime Jewellellers, The Post House, Platforms, Mister A, Gerry Kenny Sports, McKane’s Pharmacy, Imprint Ballina, Price Busters and Dave’s Deli. The organisers say thank you to all that attended on the night to support the ladies. The festival’s flagship event, Ballina’s National Heritage Day, takes place on Wednesday, July 13th.
Quarterly house price increase of 2.7% in Mayo
9
The price of the average second-hand three-bed semi in County Mayo has risen by 2.7% to €189,000 in the last three months, according to a national survey by Real Estate Alliance. And the survey has shown that 50% of sales in the county are to first-time buyers, with 25% of all purchasers coming from outside the area. Across the county, the average time taken to sell is four weeks, the Q2 REA Average House Price Index has shown. “Supply is currently limited. We saw the pace of growth ease off in Castlebar after a near 10% increase in the previous quarter,” said Robert McGreal of REA McGreal Burke. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an accurate picture of the second-hand property market in towns and cities countrywide. Prices have risen also elsewhere in Connacht, the highest percentage increase recorded in Galway City, where the price of the average three-bed is now €320,000. It compares with €205,000 in Galway County where the increase was 5.9%. In Sligo the average price has risen by 2.9%, making it €177,500; in Leitrim the increase is a more modest 0.7% to €155,000. In Roscommon, the percentage increase was much greater at 5.4% (to €195,000). A marked increase in private landlords selling their properties nationally has increased supply levels and tempered price rises in some areas. Up to 30% of houses for sale in some areas of Dublin are now due to landlords selling their additional properties, with knock-on effects for the rental market, the survey has found. Actual selling prices in Dublin postcode districts have risen by 2.5% in the past three months, to an average of €493,333 – but the annual rate of increase has dropped two percentage points to 8% on the previous survey. The price of a three-bedroomed semidetached house across the country rose by 2.9% over the past three months to €286,611 – representing an annual increase of 13%. 58% of all purchasers in the past quarter were first-time buyers according to REA, a figure which rose to 78% in Dublin as people with mortgage approval scramble to get on the housing ladder. The highest segment increase in Q2 was in cities outside the capital, which saw a 3.3% rise to an average selling price of €298,750. Commuter counties saw prices increase by 2.3% – a jump of €6,833 to €311,833. In the rest of the country, where prices rose 3.2% to €202,897, the survey found that one in every three buyers were from outside the county, with 50% first-time purchasers, as new working conditions enable a rethink on home bases.

Book launch by Sligo/Leitrim children in care
A
unique book by children in care in the Sligo/Leitrim area was launched recently, commissioned by Sligo Leitrim Home Youth Liaison Service. The book is the result of a collaboration between a group of children and young people who have experienced foster care and a professional artist and writer. Based on the knowledge that many children and young people who experience foster care seek to share with their peers the many circumstances that necessitate their journeys through these services, this book addresses the taboos that can often surround the world of foster care. The book helps to explain foster care to children, from a child's perspective. Children speak about their positive and negative experiences of foster care. In summer 2021, writer Mary Branley, artist Sharon Kelly and a group of children who have had experience of foster care worked together in a series of workshops, developing dialogue and artwork for this special publication. This publication is a national first in terms of profiling the experiences of children in care through their own voices and selfexpression, and will be an invaluable resource for other services and within educational settings. It is the latest from locally-based children’s arts organisation and publishing house, Kids’ Own, who specialise in publishing books by children, for children; and giving a platform to

children whose voices are seldom heard. Sligo Leitrim Home Youth Liaison Service was established to provide a link between family, school and professional services, providing empathetic, confidential and non-judgmental support to young people and their families. The organisation places the young person at the centre of the decision-making process with the aim of allowing young people to take responsibility for their own choices and actions.
Kids’ Own is a children and young people’s arts organisation and publishing house, dedicated to supporting their individual creative expression and to the creation of books and resources for and by children and young people through meaningful processes of engagement with professional artists. MEP MacManus with Arigna Mining Experience manager, Valerie Stenson. MEP Chris MacManus has praised the Arigna Mining Experience and the key role that it has played in economic development and attracting tourism in the local area. He was speaking after meeting manager Valerie Stenson, on a recent visit. MEP MacManus said: “I was delighted to visit Valerie and the team at the Arigna Mining Experience recently. It is a unique attraction, bringing to life the history of Ireland’s coal mining industry,
and it is easy to see why it has become such a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The coal mine closed in 1990 but a community inspired initiative resulted in the opening of the Arigna Mining Experience in 2003.” He commended the facility’s positive impact on tourism and the local economy. “Given that the local community, including many former miners, played a key role in the development of the mines into a tourist
attraction it is great to see that it has brought enormous benefits to the local area in terms of tourism and economic development. It has provided a boost to employment in the local area with the employment of staff at the mine itself and also through spin-off benefits for other local businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector.” The MEP also thanked Valerie and her team for welcoming him to Arigna and wished them continued success.”

ATU hosts key companies and agencies at regional event
T
he Atlantic Technological University (ATU) this week hosted a major business engagement event to assess to degree to which higher education institutions are meeting the needs of enterprise in the West and North West. The event, which is the second in a series of three taking place this year, was held in the ATU’s Galway campus and featured representatives from the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) as well as established businesses from across the region such as Ireland West Airport, Donegal ETB, Sligo Chamber of Commerce, Abbvie and Abbott. In April, industry was invited to an initial session entitled ‘Voice of the Customer’, at which various companies expressed opinions on staffing and skills issues across the ATU region. The Wednesday June 22 workshop began with a formal address by ATU President Dr Orla Flynn before attendees were split into three breakout rooms to investigate key elements of the Higher Education 4.0 initiative, such as needs of the learner, needs of the employer, and needs of the region. Following an hour-long session, the three working groups then
joined together to hear summaries of their findings and conduct an open discussion on how operations might be further refined to meet the needs of industry. Among topics discussed was the development of an online programme for the construction industry as well as a quality degree programme for the Medtech industry. Other case studies included Recognition of Prior Learning, Women in STEM and the Future of Work. The event also featured the launch of MyCareerPath.ie, a free online career guidance service for people wishing to upskill, re-skill or change job. The website, which was developed by the ATU as part of the €12.3million Higher Education 4.0 scheme, mixes AI technology and one-to-one human engagement to help workers access higher education and update their knowledge in way that’s as seamless and flexible as possible. Visitors to MyCareerPath.ie enjoy free access to consultations with professional advisors, information on how workplace experience can be used to leverage access to third-level courses, and even AI technology that conducts mock interviews
and provides feedback on a user’s interviewing style. In what is a first for services of this kind in Ireland, users benefit from a 30-minute one-on-one meeting at the end the process in which an advisor measures skills gaps against a person’s goals and then advises on next steps, including the choice of potential ATU courses.M yCareerPath.ie also offers a free service for businesses – helping with advice and tips on changing demands from clients and skills gaps within their own workforce. Businesses can request advisors from MyCareerPath.ie to meet with their teams, identify potential gaps and come up with solutions. The ATU liaised with employees from a range of organisations, including American medical device company Medtronic during the website’s pilot phase, and more than 50 people are now completing learning pathways. Speaking about the business engagement event, ATU President Orla Flynn said: “By working closely with business and industry in the ATU region we can help ensure that graduates from ATU programmes are well placed to bridge skill shortages being experienced by employers. Events
like this give us the opportunity to listen to business and industry stakeholders and to better understand the challenges they face. The launch of mycareerpath.ie a great example of how we deliver for businesses in our region, and these business engagement events will provide us with the insights we need to remain agile in supporting growth and prosperity in and beyond our region.”
Career and Learning Pathways Manager Bride Killoran said: "Part of the vision of the Higher Education 4.0 project is to catalyse as much university enterprise interaction as possible, with the view to growing the productive relationships with the various organisations and stakeholders that already exist across the ATU and working with business to help new relationships emerge."

NEW MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS OOZES SOPHISTICATION EDITORIAL By BREDA CORRIGAN
digital display that can display driving and media information, along with navigation information, if selected. An additional large portrait-oriented 11.9-inch central information screen can be operated by touch, voice or via the touchsensitive controls on the leather-bound steering wheel. Voice control is included on all trim levels and has the capability to recognise requests with great efficiency, and can do anything from changing the interior temperature, to programming a location into the navigation, and can even tell a joke when asked to do so. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration comes as standard, and there is wireless phone charging, along with two C-USB ports in the centre console to charge devices.
T
hree decades since its original introduction, the MercedesBenz C-Class has proven its success with just under 11 million units sold worldwide. In fact, the predecessor to the new C-Class sold over 2.5 million alone since its launch in 2014, so the new (sixthgeneration) C-Class has a lot to live up to. The underlying platform is the same, but everything that the new C-Class driver interacts with is all-new. It is slightly longer, wider and lower than what went before it, but the cab-rearwards profile ensures that the new C-Class looks like the bigger E-Class from a distance, and not too dissimilar to the super-luxurious S-Class limousine that sits at the top of the Mercedes-Benz saloon car family tree. Engine & Trim Variants Also new to the C-Class are a range of mildly-electrified drivetrains. Petrol engines consist of 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre units with the former available with 170bhp or 204bhp (badged C 180 and C 200 respectively), while the latter produces 258bhp and is badged as a C 300. Diesel power comes courtesy of a 2.0-litre turbo-charged unit with 163bhp (badged C 200d), 200bhp (badged C 220d) or 265bhp (badged C 300d). All engines come with a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission as standard. A major advantage of the mild-hybrid engines in the new C-Class is the refinement on offer, with the stop/start systems almost imperceptible, and the engine shutting off at high speeds (and times of low resistance) quite frequently, thereby resulting in outstanding fuel efficiency. The new C-Class is available in a choice of Avantgarde and AMG Line trim variants, with body styles consisting of a four-door saloon and a versatile estate.
Test Car My test car was a new C 200d Saloon AMG Line, which was finished in Graphite Grey metallic paint with grey/black ARTICO leather seats and an AMG Night Package fitted as optional extras - priced at €280 and €838 respectively. A hugely comprehensive array of comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment features come as standard in Avantgarde trim, with key AMG Line features consisting of distinctive AMG Line bodystyling, AMG brushed stainless steel sports pedals with black rubber studs, sports suspension, larger brake discs on the front axle, flat-bottomed steering wheel, and sports seats. The AMG Night Package consists of 18” AMG 5-spoke light alloy wheels in high-gloss black, AMG front apron and rear bumper trim in high-gloss black, black door mirror casings, heat insulating dark tinted rear glass, black window line trim, and a front grille with pins in high-gloss black for a distinctive sporty look. Producing 163bhp and 380Nm of torque, the refined and punchy engine in my test car can propel the C-Class saloon from 0-100km/h in just 7.7-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 230km/h (where permitted). Fuel consumption as low as 4.2-litres per 100kms driven on a WLTP combined driving cycle is achievable, with an emissions figure of 120g/km leading to annual road tax of just €190. The C-Class has admirable handling characteristics, with it being capable and entertaining in equal measure. Accurate steering, a strong brake pedal feel, and very little body lean in corners ensure that the car is fun to drive. The C-Class is a quiet motorway companion at cruising speed, with little in the way of engine or road noise, while the standard nine-speed automatic transmission shifts through the gears in a fuss-free manner.
Outstanding Design The new C-Class is a very handsome car in every respect. The vertical taillights of its predecessor have been replaced by striking horizontal lights, with slimmer headlights and a distinctive new front grille providing terrific visual drama when viewed head-on. It is easy to find a comfortable driving position in the C-Class as all models benefit from multiple adjustment options for the seat and for the multi-function steering wheel. There are not many physical buttons on the dashboard of the C-Class, but touch-sensitive climate controls are constantly displayed in the lower section of the infotainment screen, rather than hidden in a menu. In place of traditional analogue dials, the new C-Class has a crystal-clear 12.3-inch
Impressive Space & Comfort Thanks to a 25mm longer wheelbase, passenger space within the C-Class saloon is generous, and there are decent sized rear door bins to put bottles in, plus a map pocket on the back of each front seat. The rear seat has a practical 40/20/40 split folding configuration as standard, with 455-litres of cargo space on offer behind the rear seats. Inspired by the cabin of the new S-Class, the C-Class’ dash is a masterpiece of creativity that adds a real sense of occasion to every journey. Once settled into the nicely sculpted seats with ergonomicallydesigned headrests, occupants will truly appreciate the massive effort that Mercedes-Benz has made in terms of comfort, space and safety. Small touches such as the backlit air vents add a feeling of tactility and substance to a largely digitised cabin, with all major controls located within easy reach of the driver at all times. The reach and
rake-adjustable steering wheel incorporates a new design with two spokes per side, and slim stalks behind on the column for indicating and selecting drive function. The spokes each have their own bank of touchpads to control functions - for example, to increase the volume of the audio you simply slide your left thumb up and down, with the instrument cluster controlled by the top-right wheel spoke. Driver comfort and safety features include distance assist, steering assist, lane keeping assist, improved surround sensors, emergency braking functions, and a feature that can detect and raise the body height in anticipation of an impending collision. High Performance LED headlamps are standard while optional items include a host of passenger comfort, safety and wellness features already familiar in the S-Class and other MercedesBenz models.
Verdict & Pricing Buyers in the mini-executive car market want a car that looks cool, is packed with the latest technology, is terrific to drive, and has a sensible range of engines that are economical and refined. The good news is that, with the new CClass, Mercedes-Benz has delivered on all of the above, and more. In terms of interior displays, build quality, ride comfort, refinement, and elegant design, the new C-Class remains a class leader in my mind. Pricing for the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon starts at €56,425 with my test car specification priced at €63,330 (including optional extras outlined). The new C-Class Estate is priced from €65,120. All prices are quoted excluding dealer and delivery charges.

SLIP INTO SLEEP WITH THESE APPS & GADGETS
M
MAKING SLEEP A TOP PRIORITY COULD BE THE BEST PREVENTIVE MEDICINE FOR YOUR BRAIN AND YOUR BODY. ost adults need at least seven hours sleep per night to promote better concentration and productivity. Getting a good night’s rest also results in lower risk of heart disease, a stronger immune system, lower weight gain, reduced inflammation, and fewer instances of depression, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you’re reading this and thinking, ‘Seven hours? I wish!’ or, ‘I know all this, but still have trouble falling or staying asleep,’ you’re not alone — especially during a global pandemic when more is weighing on our minds. While there are several factors that could impact the quantity and quality of your sleep — age, diet, stress, room conditions and alcohol consumption, to name a few — technology might be able to help monitor your night’s sleep and/or help you get a better one. Apps The Relax Melodies app helps you fall asleep by letting you choose
from a myriad of soothing nature sounds — like a crackling fire, crashing waves, or thunderstorms in a forest — and the option to create your own soundscape on your phone or tablet. It also includes white noise options, meditation sessions, bedtime stories and a section called SleepMoves, with a series of bodymind exercises and relaxation techniques. Sleep Cycle leverages your smartphone’s built-in microphone and accelerometer, which picks up your movements as you sleep using sound and vibration analysis. The app then analyzes the data to determine if you are in light sleep, deep sleep or a REM dream state — and then wakes you up at an optimal time (within a 30-minute window that you set). The app attempts to rouse you during your lightest phase of sleep, so that you wake up feeling rested and refreshed. One of the more popular apps for mindfulness and meditation, the
Westport Foot Clinic
Westport, Co. Mayo
Chiropodist: Martin Mc Nally Tel: 087 222 6260
Calm app is loaded with guided sessions in varying lengths, from 3 to 25 minutes, and content designed for all meditation skill levels, with full seven- and 21-day programs. Simply choose a topic that matters most to you, such as Deep Sleep, Happiness, Managing Stress, Focus, Calming Anxiety or Breaking Habits — and the desired length of the session. Track your progress, including your history and daily meditation sessions (called streaks). Similarly, the Headspace app is billed as a “gym membership for the mind.” It features a clean and easy-to-use interface and guided lessons for beginners to experts — and everyone in between. There are several meditation and mindfulness techniques that help you clear your head, reduce stress and improve sleep. Newly added sessions include “The Wake Up,” with inspirational short stories and advice, and “Move Mode,” which are guided workouts to exercise your mind and body at the same time.
Gadgets The all-new Google Nest Hub is a smart display that lets you verbally
ask a question, hear — and see — a response from your favourite personal assistant. Or you can use the touch screen to play videos, access recipes and more. On your night table, however, it also uses motion and sound to monitor your sleep, and can detect light and temperature in the room. It can help track when you go to bed, when you wake up and how long (and well) you’ve slept, and then give customized suggestions over time. Another bedside companion, the Philips Somneo sleep and wake-up light with RelaxBreath guides you though light-based breathing exercises to wind down. When it’s time to rise, the Somneo gradually brightens your room by simulating a natural sunrise, from red to orange to a bright yellow light, and with optional sound effects (or radio). By day, the wearable Fitbit Inspire 2 captures activity information — such as steps taken, distance travelled, estimated calories burned and heart rate — and shows the info on the watch or wirelessly on a companion app. At night, it smartly monitors your time spent in light, deep and REM sleep, and provides a Sleep Score to better understand your sleep
quality each night (which you an also share be shared with others, like your physician). Similarly, Apple Watch has an integrated Sleep app, which lets you create bedtime schedules and track your sleep trends over time. All this info is wirelessly shared to the Health app on your iPhone for a deeper dive into the data (including charts and graphs). Apple Watch also supports several dozen sleep-related third-party apps, including Pillow, AutoSleep, Sleep++ and Sleep Watch (most are free to try). The Sound Oasis GTS-2000 Deluxe Glo To Sleep Therapy Mask uses a similar approach to help astronauts get a good rest aboard the International Space Station. While blocking out ambient light, a red-toned light helps you fall asleep, while blue tones wake you gently and effectively at your chosen alarm time. All the science is discussed on its website. Noise-cancelling headphones, if comfortable to wear, could also help you fall asleep by cancelling out environmental noise, and could relax you further by playing soothing nature sounds from a nearby smartphone, tablet or laptop.
