Don’t take risks - keep safe this Christmas T

HE headline generates an automatic response – keep your distance, wear a mask, wash your hands, avoid crowds, keep your office (or home) well ventilated. While all of this absolutely necessary in the current Covid environment, what is almost equally as important this Christmas, with children at home and busy, and an unprecedented range of spectacular lighting dominating the landscape and streetscapes, is the issue of fire safety in the home. With just few days left before Christmas, ESB Networks is reminding people not to take risks with electricity in the run-up to Christmas day. One of the first pieces of advice, in the form of a warning, from the company is to never use their poles to hang outdoor Christmas lights as the electricity wires overhead are live and extremely dangerous. “You must always keep a safe distance because electricity is very powerful and can jump gaps,” it said in a statement. It’s also reminding people to ensure their electrical equipment around the home is in good condition. The warning is timely, of course, just after Barra has left its impact. “At this time of year, storms and strong winds can cause damage to electricity wires and poles, bringing wires to the ground; always be alert and keep your distance.”

ESB Networks also provides the following essential safety tips: • Only use electrical equipment, including Christmas lights, that are in good condition. • Check for frayed wires, loose connections, damaged or cracked plugs, or any signs of discolouration – if there is any sign of these, disconnect immediately and replace. It is always safer to disconnect remotely at the distribution board. Continued on Page 2

Opening hours of Mayo Garda stations could be extended PENING hours in some Mayo garda stations could be extended with civilian staff being recruited to man the front office according to Chief Superintendent Raymond McMahon. This move might answer a question raised by a Ballinrobe councillor who has received complaints from the public about the local station being closed at times when it's supposed to be open to the public. Councillor Michael Burke said he appreciated there were times when the gardaí could not be there, such as when dealing with an accident. But if an elderly person comes to do business during the appointed opening times, there should be someone in the office. It was also important that the correct times are displayed, as well as a phone number to get assistance if there's no one available.

Chief Supt. McMahon said a process has started in some districts to bring in garda staff, non-sworn members, to man the front of the station. They hoped this would be expanded throughout the division and it would give members more time to be out engaging with the community, assisting the elderly and detecting crime. Local Superintendent Gabriel Moran apologised for the inconvenience caused. Ballinrobe is not a 24/7 station, he said, and members are responsible for policing throughout the area and they will be out at times. They will seek to open the station during the advertised times and also normally look to open at additional times in the evening. In next year's policing plan for the district they will look to give realistic times they can stand over as much as possible. The notice board at the station will also be reviewed.

Supt. Moran said they were hoping the changes outlined by the Chief Supt. would allow for some greater opening of stations.

€110,126 for Mayo’s Sensory Gardens IT was good news this weekend for Mayo’s Sensory Gardens plans. Dara Calleary, T.D. was happy to announce that funding for the development of four Sensors Gardens in the county had been confirmed. Ballina Sensory Garden has been allocated the largest amount with €65,000 in funding secured; Western Care will also be developing gardens in Ballyhaunis (€30,126) and Newport (€5,000) while Rehab Group in Castlebar has been allocated €10,000. Said Deputy Calleary: “I am particularly delighted to secure the funding for Ballina Sensory Park. A lot of work has been undertaken by Western Care, FLOW Community Project, Ballina Community Clean-up and Mayo County Council and I know that when I had Minister Rabbitte visit the site earlier this year she was extremely impressed with the proposal and with the level of community engagement as evidenced by the #Freeze 4February fundraising efforts. “This is great news for the county and I look forward to the works commencing on all projects in the New Year.”

Local man launches his own book ‘My Life - My Story’ in Ballinamore

B

allinamore natives are looking forward to the launch of a new book by local man, Joe Kellegher. Joe is launching his book “My Life - My Story” dealing with his own life experiences in Prior's Ballinamore on December 18. The book is an account of an ordinary, but also quite extraordinary life. He faces his demons and wins. He writes about depression, about high times and low and does so with great insight and sincerity. It is a particularly lovely read for those from around Ballinamore. For people who spent any time with Joe it will make for an enticing read. They probably will get a mention in the book - his memory is impeccable. He writes about his childhood, his relationship with his family, his hobbies, his friends and his unique characteristics. A deeply spiritual man, he brings a great insight into his early life and his description of places and people will resonate with a lot of locals who grew up in Leitrim in the early 70s and 80s. Last year Joe recorded his own album. The CD was a compilation of songs from his hero Elvis Presley 'Memories From the Past.' The book is available for Christmas in Donohoe's Super Valu, Ballinamore and Mulvey's Carrick-on-Shannon.

People from North West stand with GOAL this Christmas

The annual event sees people across Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Donegal and elsewhere gather over the Christmas holidays to run, jog or walk a mile in support of vulnerable communities across 14 countries where GOAL works in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. First held in 1977, this year’s GOAL Mile is supported by AIB as part of an exciting new three-year partnership, announced last month. This year marks the first time that both in-person and virtual GOAL Miles are taking place following the move online in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, approximately 50,000 people raised over €250,000 in 2019. With AIB’s support, the GOAL Mile is now set to return stronger than ever, with over 150 GOAL Miles being organised in 28 counties and even more online. 2021 is expected to be the biggest GOAL Mile yet. GOAL’s Director of Fundraising and Marketing, Eamon Sharkey, sees the option of physical or virtual GOAL Miles as an opportunity to connect even more people with their communities, the Irish diaspora and GOAL’s work this Christmas. “We are so excited to re-connect with people in-person this Christmas. For many people, it will have been two years since they were last with family, friends and neighbours, and we hope the GOAL Mile can play a part in bringing people together as we come out of such a challenging period.” “Of course, there are many people around the world who still can’t be at home or take part in physical events this Christmas. That is why we are delighted to also be encouraging virtual GOAL Miles once again. Last year people from every corner of

the world took part to make it a truly global event, and we would love to see that become a part of the longstanding tradition of the GOAL Mile.” AIB Chief Executive, Colin Hunt, said: “The GOAL Mile is a renowned and longstanding event that helps transform the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. We know that the GOAL Mile is already at the heart of many of the communities we serve, and we look forward to taking part in

this unique event with our staff and customers. At AIB we are committed to building a sustainable tomorrow by backing those who are building it today, and by supporting GOAL we are reaching those communities that are already suffering deeply from the impact of crises, poverty and climate change.“ To register for your local GOAL Mile or to arrange one at a new location, please visit: www.goalmile.org.

Dara Ó Briain is back on tour, with a brand new show! At the end of his last tour, Dara had performed the show "Voice Of Reason" 180 times, over 2 years across 20 countries, from Auckland to Reykjavik, from Moscow to New York; and by March 2020 he was ready for a break! He would now like to apologise for saying that and will never wish for

anything like that again. Yes, he's back on tour, and he will never stop again, because that's clearly what caused all this trouble. Instead, in his new show 'So, Where Were We?" Dara will hardly mention the last year and a half, because, Jesus, who wants to hear about that, but will instead fire out the usual mix of stories, one-liners, audience messing, and tripping over his words

because he is talking too quickly, because he's so giddy to be back in front of a crowd. Dara is very excited about this and looking forward to seeing you when he brings his show to the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on January 29th so make sure that you’re there. St. Angela’s College Address Diversity and Inclusion Through National Webinar Series T Northwest Express December, 2021

he School of Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies at St. Angela’s College have recently collaborated with the Irish Universities Association (IUA) series of webinars “Celebrating the Contribution of Nursing and Midwifery in Contemporary Irish Society”. The series focused on the contribution education and research has made to the practice knowledge and skills of nurses and Midwives. It also explored the role the profession has been playing in the supporting the national effort during the COVID-19 pandemic. Working with colleagues from Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University, the title of St. Angela’s College webinar was ‘Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in Nursing and Midwifery Education’. Ms Susan Carton, Programme Director for Disability Studies and Lecturer on the Bachelor of Nursing Science courses in St. Angela’s College, led out on the joint project and delivered some excellent and thought-provoking insights. “We want to change

traditional ways of thinking, in order to create public services which are representative of the societies we serve.” “We recognise that excellence cannot be achieved without effective inclusive practices and levels of diversity within the nursing profession that reflect the general population. Removing the barriers to participation for underrepresented groups can not only lead to our common goals, but can get us there faster”. The webinar focused on real life scenarios presented by speakers with expertise in the areas of inclusion and diversity. This generated further debate and ideas sharing among the wide range of Nursing and Midwifery academics and educationalist across the country who attended the webinar The webinar was recorded and is available on the College’s website www.nuigalway.ie/stangelas St. Angela’s College is currently in the process of incorporating with IT Sligo and will subsequently become one of nine campuses of the new Atlantic Technological University designated in April 2022.

Head of the School of Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies at St. Angela’s College, Ms Evelyn Mc Manus describes the

exciting opportunities that lie ahead “developing synergies with colleagues at IT Sligo in areas of Health and Disability Studies will

MEP calls for support in fight against gender-based cyberviolence

I

reland must play its part in the European fight against gender-based cyberviolence, according to Mayo’s MEP, Maria Walsh. The Midlands-North-West MEP has been leading work in the European Parliament on this growing issue. As a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) she has led the work on the file ‘Combating Gender Based Violence: Cyber Violence’. This week in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs were set to vote on a report tackling all forms of cyberviolence. MEP Walsh said: “The European Commission announced last week that it will adopt an EU-wide Directive on violence against women and domestic violence. "This would include the criminalisation of serious forms of gender-based hate crime and hate speech both online and offline. “This is a massive step forward for the EU, and a great result at the end of a long and persistent process, including my work on the file dedicated to making genderbased violence a European level crime, which was finally voted in September 2021. “This is an incredible and much needed step forward for women’s rights in the EU. “I want to see Ireland implement it as soon as possible and play its part in the European fight against cyberviolence and the abuse of women and girls.” Speaking at a debate on Monday MEP Walsh said: "It has now become normal for women to casually discuss personal experiences of cyber violence and abuse. As female representatives we have all

experienced it in some form, haven't we? We have experienced the anxiety that it draws within us." MEP Walsh has been dedicated to this topic, as a champion for equality, particularly given her work for women’s rights and LGBTI+ community members. Her work led to the reference of a prominent Irish incident within the file text. The incident, which occurred in 2020, involved links to almost 500,000 WhatsApp chats including sensitive images of women and girls. Earlier this year, MEP Walsh held a constructive and informative roundtable on cyberviolence to ensure all voices were heard. The roundtable involved multiple

Irish organizations such as Maynooth Students’ Union, GMIT Students’ Union, CyberSafeKids, Young Fine Gael, FG Women’s Network and many more. MEP Walsh continued: “The European Commission is currently preparing an EU campaign on victims’ rights with a budget of two million euro, which will have a special focus on victims of gender-based violence, domestic violence and LGBTIQ hate crime. “This will be a valuable tool in raising awareness of this crime. We must put a stop to online abuse. It is simply not good enough for the European Union and policy makers across member states and platforms to fail to protect our citizens online, especially our women and girls.”

The long-established drama group won the All-Ireland One-Act Confined Drama final in Ennis last weekend with their play, “Plaza Suite - Visitor From Hollywood” by Neil Simon. Qualifying joint top of the One Act Drama league table from the One-Act Festival Circuit, the South Sligo group claimed the

All-Ireland title for the first time in their history in front of a packed Glór Theatre in Ennis. The show, directed by Tom Walsh, with a cast of Frank Brennan, Terri Brennan and Lorraine Fitzgerald, and a backstage crew of Jimmy Coleman, Pauric Gillespie, John James Maye and Ursula Brennan, was a huge hit with audiences across the festival circuit and again at the All Ireland Finals, picking up numerous awards and accolades along the way, with Terri Brennan winning

Best Actress at the All Ireland Finals. It was a huge boost to the group, to the town of Tubbercurry and the whole South Sligo community, particularly in such difficult times. A Gala Homecoming celebration was held in St Brigid’s Hall Tubbercurry last Friday evening to honour the victory, with the cast and crew arriving Hollywood Style to the red carpet in a cavalcade of vintage cars to rapturous acclaim from supporters and local drama enthusiasts.

Local Mayo EUROSPARS support St. Vincent de Paul this December

B

rogan’s EUROSPAR Belmullet and Kennedy’s EUROSPAR Swinford are supporting the St Vincent de Paul (SVP) Empty Plate Appeal this year, which will help reduce the chances of a child going hungry this festive season with all in-store donations being repatriated within local communities so those most in need this Christmas don’t do without. All in-store donations are distributed within the local community and, this year, as an additional measure, these EUROSPAR SuperEasy Supermarkets will also be making an additional donation from selected own-brand sales in store. With nearly one third of all calls received each year by SVP a request for food, EUROSPAR Retailers are facilitating shoppers donating non-perishable items at their local EUROSPAR Supermarket for the benefit of their local St Vincent de Paul Conference. While shopping in EUROSPAR Belmullet or EUROSPAR Swinford shoppers are asked to

place any non-perishable items in the trolley or receptacle designated for the ‘Empty Plate Appeal’. The campaign is taking place through Christmas and into early New Year and in order to allay any concerns around the distribution and transferral of food, all contributions will be converted to their monetary value at the end of the campaign and will be converted into EUROSPAR Vouchers. The vouchers will then be given to the local St Vincent de Paul Conference. Commenting Malachy Hanberry, EUROSPAR Managing Director said: “These EUROSPAR Retailers have a long tradition of supporting charities and those most vulnerable in our society. Christmas is a time for giving and for generosity and their facilitating of this fundraising initiative, as well as the additional donations from selected ownbrand sales in stores, for the St Vincent de Paul is another example of their commitment to the communities they

serve.” Of the 160,000 calls made to SVP in 2021, 50,000 of them were requests for food, with SVP National President Rose McGowan, saying: “We are extremely grateful to the EUROSPAR stores and staff for the effort they are putting into this venture. It is a great way to provide their customers with an opportunity to help so many people in the local communities in which their stores are based. This year more than ever the Society is relying on support of this nature as we have received more calls for help nationally than at any other time in our history. “We estimate that by the end of the year we will have received almost 200,000 calls for help. It is through initiatives such as the Empty Plate campaign that we are to provide help to so many and we urge those in the communities served by EUROSPAR shops to support it.”

S

Siobhan Jordan

IOBHAN Jordan from Ballina was the recipient of an award for academic excellence which was presented by CPA Ireland at a conferring ceremony on Saturday. The award recognises her accomplishment as the top performing student in the management fundamentals subject, with the award sponsored by People Source. Speaking at CPA Ireland’s annual conferring ceremony in the O’Reilly Hall in UCD, CPA president Áine Collins said: “In conjunction with our sponsors, CPA Ireland each year presents awards to those students who have achieved the highest examination mark in

each subject for the CPA examinations. Congratulations Siobhan and to all the 2021 prize-winners who come from diverse roles in both practice and industry and thank you to all our partner firms involved in this event.” A survey of Irish accountancy, finance and business students published at the ceremony found a strong desire to work abroad in their future careers. Some 84% of respondents cited working abroad as one of their key career ambitions, while for 12% it was the single highest priority. In a departure from previous trends, half stated that continental Europe would be

their first-choice destination, followed by the US (27%), Australia (10%) and Canada (9%). Ms. Collins said: “Accountancy is now well and truly a global profession, and a CPA qualification opens doors across the globe. Today CPAs from Ireland are working in over 50 countries. “While the trend of accountants travelling is nothing new it is interesting to see so many now consider Europe their top choice destination. This will help Ireland build new stronger relationships with trading partners across Europe in the years ahead. We look forward to supporting our own members on these journeys.”

record number of Sports Scholarships across a wide variety of sports have been awarded to students at IT Sligo. Sixty-eight Sports Scholarships were recently approved by the Institute. Of these, 26 are first time sports scholars and 42 are returning Sports Scholars. For the first time this year, Sligo Rovers and Sligo Rugby Club scholarship programmes have been incorporated into the IT Sligo Sports Scholarship Programme with those recipients receiving financial reward through their club agreement with IT Sligo and all other benefits through the IT Sligo Sports Scholarship Programme. Sligo Rovers have four and Sligo Rugby Club have two players benefiting from this collaboration. The growing popularity of women’s football is also reflected in the list of scholars with five scholarships awarded to women in soccer. Commending the sports scholars, President of IT Sligo Dr Brendan McCormack said: “It has been another difficult year for sport with the ongoing pandemic but these students have shown the dedication and commitment needed to rise to the highest level. Sporting activity is really important in these times to build resilience, fitness and mental health. Since its introduction in 2003, the IT Sligo Sports Scholarship programme has benefited students involved in a wide range of sports. We are delighted to support so many sports scholarships in our last year as an Institute of Technology. Each of our Sports Scholarship recipients has excelled in their chosen sports activity and in so doing they have enhanced IT Sligo’s reputation as a learning environment that values and rewards sporting prowess. We especially welcome the alternative sports and the growing interest in women’s sport.” Despite the difficult two years that sports people have experiences with reduced opportunity for sporting competition, we have a new Gold scholar this year. Dearbhla Rooney a champion boxer from Co. Leitrim was awarded the Gold scholar award for her outstanding dedication in the ring. IT Sligo continues to recognise a wide range of sports in its selection of Sports Scholars and sports recognised for the first time this year include Rowing, Cycling and Pole Sport. Returning sports

scholars include boxing, surfing, equestrian and chess. In another first for Sport at IT Sligo, this year a specific Sport Bursary Programme for Flexible / Online Learners was launched and there are seven inaugural Bursary Holders representing a variety of sports, ages, and geographical locations across the country. To reflect this new development, the titles of the differing levels of scholarship are now called Scholarship, Silver and Gold. The new Flexible / Online Learners Sports Bursary is awarded at Bursary and

Bursary Plus levels. The full package of common supports awarded includes a financial support package, free gym membership at the Knocknarea Arena and specially commissioned sportswear. Elite Sportspeople who are entering first year and have applied by May 1st also receive a pre-entry offer which includes CAO bonus points for the courses of their choice at IT Sligo. A special presentation of the scholarships to students will take place at IT Sligo in January.

As we face into another winter of uncertainty, companionship, feeling connected and having access to vital services have never been more important. Many people who are blind or vision impaired have experienced heightened feelings of isolation and anxiety due to Covid19 restrictions. One response to this was NCBI’s launching its Connection Network service, which is a volunteer led befriending service to service users. Through a weekly phone call, it gives opportunity to expand social networks, share conerns and feel connected. The service has proven to be very successful and now NCBI is seeking

more volunteers to help us reach more service users ahead of International Volunteer Day on 5th December. All volunteers will be fully trained and supported and are guaranteed to enjoy the eperience. Calls to service users are made at no cost to the volunteer as they are made through the Blueface App. An active volunteer said ‘Volunteering in the Connection Network service has given me a sense of fulfilment and friendship. I enjoy my weekly chats with service users and feel I am part of providing a great service to vulnerable people especially during this pandemic when people are very lonely due to

Covid19.’ Feedback from service users included comments, such as: ‘Knowing that I had someone on the other end of the phone who wanted to chat has gotten me through the second lockdown’. For people who are blind or vision impaired, it is important to know that NCBI and their wider community are there to support them in the coming months and well into the future. If you are interested in volunteering with the NCBI ‘Connection Network’, please contact Paul.Derrig@ncbi.ie. June Tinsley - NCBI Head of Advocacy and Communications

The donation was presented to Sean Prunty of the Irish Society for Autism at the Sligo Park Hotel on Monday (December 13th) Sligo Park Hotel adopted the Irish Society for Autism as its chosen charity for 2021 after asking staff to vote at the beginning of the year. Lynn trial scheduled for next month

IT was one of the high-profile cases of the financial crash, but the criminal trial of former solicitor and Mayo native Michael Lynn is scheduled to get under way next month. Mr. Lynn, originally from Crossmolina, with a current address at Millbrook Court, Red Cross, Co. Wicklow, will go on trial on January 11th at the Circuit Criminal Court in Dublin. He faces 21 charges relating to the alleged theft of almost €30 million from seven financial institutions. Mr. Lynn had absconded from Ireland during the financial crash and was subsequently arrested in Brazil, spending almost four years on remand. He was first charged more than three years ago. Following a Law Society investigation his practice was closed in October 2007 and he was subsequently struck off the Roll of Solicitors. He was extradited from Brazil in 2018 to face the charges. The triall was scheduled to begin two years ago but experienced major delays over the period. While the period for the trial is currently listed for 12 weeks there is speculation that due to the complex nature of the case it could go on for at least six months. celebrating World Autism Day on April 2nd and staff wearing the Irish Society for Autism pin as part of their uniform. Fundraising events held throughout the year included a Virtual Walking Challenge. Staff walked from Sligo to Dublin and back – a total of 358km. The walk took place on May 22nd 2021 and over 40 staff took part. A coffee morning and raffle was held in November in Jack B’s Bar which was attended by staff and residents. Also, during the year, 50pc of all proceeds from Parker – the hotel’s teddy bear – went to the Irish Society for Autism. The Sligo Park Hotel is part of Lee Hotels. We were delighted to have this close association with the charity, which is close to many of our hearts. Thanks to all those who donated to this great cause during the year and to all our staff who took part in a variety of events, ranging from coffee mornings to raffles and, of course, helping promote Parker the teddy!”

Leitrim's only outdoor pool in Drumshanbo needs refurbishment to be ready for Summer 2022. Cllr Enda McGloin has asked that the pool be inspected and upgraded, as it is 10 years since the last refurbishment. He said some bricks are needed for the walls along with painting and a deep clean. The popular pool is managed by Leitrim County Council and Aura Leisure Centre. The council agreed to consider the matter and come back with an answer next month.

Timely new book on the Bible by retired Mayo school principal

A new book, just launched by a retired Mayo teacher, exploring the Bible, should generate a lot of interest over the Christmas season. "No Room in the Inn" is the work of Tom Higgins, a former principal of Breaffy National School close to Castlebar. Tom's first book was "Through Fagan's Gates, The Parish and People of Castlebar Down the Ages," published by The Connaught Telegraph. The 500-page book was favourably reviewed on the Midwest Radio programme, "Faith Alive," last Sunday. "No Room in the Inn" is on sale at the Castle Bookshop, Castlebar. It aims to show that the perennial questions about the origin, meaning and purpose of human life are as relevant today as when the Bible was written with an ancient audience in mind. The answers the Bible provides are both reasonable and enlightening: in the beginning, God placed human beings in this world and appointed them to a mission of caring for the earth and for one another. The discharge of this mission gives us a reason and a purpose for living. It represents the first step towards the fulfilment of our destiny of union with one another and with God. Rather than being strictly academic, the aim of the book is devotional and inspirational. It is mainly intended for lay readers.

liver’s Menswear is celebrating 30 years in business this month having first opened its doors on 29 November 1991. A family-run business, Oliver’s is widely recognised as one of the leading menswear shops in the West of Ireland, stocking a broad range of quality brands such as Olymp, Marnelli, Bugatti, Remus Uomo, Carl Gross, Benetti, Strellson, Helly Hansen, A Fish Named Fred, Digel, together with established labels such as Magee and Clipper. clients for their big day, including wedding suits, tuxedos and more formal tails. Based in Dublin in the early nineties, Oliver and his wife, Marian, seized the opportunity to move home with their young family and establish a business when EJ Queenan’s, the well-known drapery and clothes shop in Ballina, came on the market. In 1998, Oliver and Marian expanded into ladies’ fashion by opening Sarangra Boutique (named after their three daughters; Anna, Grace and Sarah). Sarangra adjoins Oliver’s and is managed by Marian and youngest daughter Sarah. NEW NISSAN QASHQAI - A REINVENTED VISION

OVER 100 VEHICLES TO CLEAR

191 182 181 171 171 161 151 2009

I

By Breda Corrigan

t is hard to believe that the Nissan Qashqai is now in its third generation. First introduced in 2007, it started the trend for family SUV’s, with virtually every car manufacturer having at least one SUV in their model range now. The combination of an elevated driving position, rugged good looks and low running costs struck a chord with families seeking the stylish 4 x 4 look. When in 2014 the second generation was launched the Qashqai was even more popular with millions of Qashqai sold worldwide. Now with the newest edition, the Qashqai boasts huge improvements with more space, better on-board technology and useful practical touches, but it is up against much tougher competition that its predecessors. The new Qashqai brings a new vision to crossover/SUV design with muscular proportions, a vibrant colour palette (including new two-tone colours), brilliant LED lighting, and a host of other optional extras. Mild Hybrid Technology The Qashqai is available with Nissan’s 1.3litre DIG-T engine – a 12V mild-Hybrid petrol unit with either 138bhp or 156bhp. There are a wide range of trim options available, from entry-level XE, to SV, SV Premium, SV Tech and top-of-the-range SVE. Standard equipment across all trim levels includes a 7” colour TFT combimeter, i-key with engine start/stop button, intelligent front emergency braking (with pedestrian, cyclist and junction assist), Shark Fin Antenna, rear parking sensors and idle stop start.

Two or Four-Wheel-Drive The new 1.3-litre mild hybrid petrol engine includes a Lithium-ion battery which stores energy recovered under braking, and then uses the energy harvested to feed the Qashqai’s electrical system. There is a choice of either a six-speed manual or CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic transmission, with all trim levels available in a front-wheel-drive format, while four-wheel-drive is available as an option from mid-spec SV Premium trim. Modern & Uplifted Interior Everything about the interior of the new Qashqai feels advanced, modern and uplifted, with premium seat materials surrounding occupants in a comfortable manner. The ergonomically-designed steering wheel, controls and console mean total

driving comfort, while enhanced screen visibility and seamless tech integration makes for a relaxed driving experience. Boot space in the new Qashqai is an impressive 504-litres with the rear seat backs in position, but when the rear seat backs are dropped this extends to 1,592-litres. Two luggage boards (both with one fully wipeable side) offer 16 boot configurations for maximum flexibility whatever your cargo. Every new Qashqai is equipped with advanced safety technologies designed to watch the road, keep everyone safe and provide maximum peace-of-mind. Safety systems include Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Rear Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Prevention and Intelligent Emergency Braking as standard.

Test Car My test car was a Qashqai SV Premium CVT (automatic) 1.3-litre mild hybrid, which was finished in dynamic Magnetic Blue Pearl paintwork. The CVT transmission allows the car to drive just like a regular automatic and, even though it doesn’t have actual gears, it is surprisingly smooth in its operation. Manoeuvring the new Qashqai in and out of tight spaces is made simple thanks to light and accurate steering, along with the added benefit of front and rear parking sensors, and rear-view camera. Refinement in the new Qashqai is vastly superior to the previous generation and, due to the a weight reduction of 60kg, it is now more agile than ever. Producing 156bhp and 270Nm of torque, the 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 9.5-seconds, while consuming as little as 6.4l/100km on a combined WLTP driving cycle.

Verdict, Pricing & Warranty Structural and engine optimization have been a key part of the development of the new Qashqai in order to deliver great driving performance, as well as improved fuel efficiency. The stiffer structure offers improved dynamic performance and security, while the extensive use of aluminium body panels reduces overall weight for lower emissions. The all-new Nissan Qashqai mild hybrid is one the most competitively priced crossovers on the market, and comes future ready in every respect. Pricing for the new Nissan Qashqai starts at just €32,000 (exworks). A comprehensive 3-Year/100,000km Nissan warranty comes as standard.

7 FOODS TO HELP FIGHT DIABETES

lmost one in 3 of us have diabetes or prediabetes. For the millions of people living with prediabetes, this means their blood sugar is higher than it should be, and so are their odds of developing this disease. While the rate of diabetes in this country is rising quickly, many of the risk factors, including heavy weight, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, can be reduced by choosing a healthier overall diet. Certain foods are particularly helpful in giving you more control over the condition – or avoiding diabetes altogether.

(Don’t peel the skin!) An apple a day may literally keep the insulin away: Research from the Women’s Health Study in the U.S. suggests that eating apples regularly may be protective against diabetes.

1. Lentils Just a half-cup of lentils will give you almost eight grams of fibre. That’s more than you’d get from two cups of brown rice. Fibre is a true friend, because it can actually lower your blood glucose level – as well as your bad cholesterol – while making you feel full. Insoluble fibre in particular seems to lower the risk of diabetes. This past April, researchers at the University of Guelph reported on the difference it makes to blood sugar when you replace just half your potatoes or rice with lentils. (Hint: It’s significant.) Lentils are also a protein food, with a three-quarter cup serving providing the same amount of protein as a five-ounce steak!

2. Apples If you’re eating to prevent or control diabetes, get to know the glycemic index (GI). Foods with a lower GI won’t spike your blood sugar as much as those that are higher on the scale. Stick with these, and you can reduce your likelihood of developing diabetes, or reduce complications if you already have the disease. Not only are apples a low-GI fruit, they offer plenty of fibre and flavonoids.

3. Sourdough bread (over other types of bread) Tangy sourdough bread dough is fermented from wild yeast and bacteria cultures. Sourdough bread is lower on the glycemic index than regular wheat bread, so it’s long been considered the better choice if you want to avoid sugar spikes after your sandwiches. The acid produced by the bacteria help keep the bread fresher longer. And that’s not all: Compared to regular wholegrain bread, the sourdough method has been shown to retain more of the phytonutrients (chemical compounds that are good for us, such as flavonoids). Keep in mind, however, if you choose to eat sourdough bread, do so in moderation. While it may be better for you than other types of bread, it is still carbohydrate-heavy and does raise your glucose levels.

4. Beets Your diabetes-fighting diet should include lots of vegetables, like leafy greens, while avoiding the starchier veggies that rank high on the GI, such as potatoes. Beets are a best bet, with benefits supported by many studies. For example, drinking beet juice has been associated with reduced blood pressure, something that many people with diabetes struggle with. Beet juice is high in inorganic nitrate, a substance that helps dilate blood vessels and could explain the healthier blood pressure. Beets are also rich in metabolites, molecules that support cell function. Metabolites tend to be lower in people with insulin resistance. Beets may even

Westport Foot Clinic

Chiropodist: Martin Mc Nally Tel: 087 222 6260

lower chronic inflammation. Many researchers are looking into the potential therapeutic benefits of beets. (We’re just looking for tasty ways to cook them.)

5. Peanut butter Nuts are known to reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes, so you can’t go wrong snacking on almonds, walnuts and pistachios. High-protein peanuts are another promising pick because they’re low on the glycemic index and packed with nutrients. A Brazilian study of obese women found that when they had peanut butter at breakfast, they had lower blood sugar and reduced appetite, effects that lasted for hours. Peanuts are high in healthy oils, which also help reduce cholesterol. Choose peanut butter

that’s pure, with no added sugar or salt.

6. Grapeseed Oil Speaking of healthy oils, we think grape is great. At Ohio State University, nutrition researchers are suggesting that grapeseed oil – and other cooking oils that are high in linoleic acid, a type of fatty acid – can help prevent cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. Do be sure to keep grapeseed oil in the refrigerator, as it can spoil quickly. (Don’t worry if it looks cloudy – that’s a temporary effect from the chill.) 7. Barley Beautiful barley belongs in more than just your soup! This tasty grain can be added to salads, served as a

hot breakfast cereal, and even made into risotto. It can also be eaten on its own as a side dish, or made into boricha, a traditional Korean tea. According to researchers at Lund University’s Food for Health Science Centre in Sweden, barley’s unique blend of dietary fibres has special benefits for the cardiovascular system. When these fibres enter the digestive system, they trigger the release of hormones that help to improve metabolism, control appetite and reduce chronic inflammation. In an experiment, people who ate barley bread and were tested afterwards had improved insulin sensitivity and decreased blood sugar. Raise your glass (of boricha) to barley!

“I was fortunate to be passing a chemist shop in my home town and decided to make an appointment with the audiologist. I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo
