NORTON WAY EMPLOYEE HAS BEEN FUNDRAISING FOR OVER 45 YEARS Norton Way Corporate Vehicle Quality Controller, Adrian Gower, has now been fundraising for the British Heart Foundation for over 45 years. Sadly, Adrian’s mother suffered from a major heart attack over 40 years ago, but remarkably survived thanks to the superb care she received. Ever since this tragic event Adrian has completed a challenge every year to raise money for the charity, including swims, head shaves, cycling and bowling marathons – just to name a few. The money Adrian's raised has been used to pay for the machinery needed to help beat Coronary heart disease and has led to saving thousands of lives.
This year’s challenge
Adrian is taking part in the Prudential RideLondonSurrey 100. The event takes place on Sunday 29th July and follows a 100-mile route starting from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and finishing on The Mall in central London. The course was made famous from the London 2012 Olympics and features numerous leg-testing climbs across Surrey’s stunning countryside. Adrian will be joining 80,000 other riders who will be fundraising for chosen charities on the day. The event began back in 2013 as part of creating a legacy for the 2012 Olympic Games, the annual cycling festival provides a fantastic platform for TFL to encourage people to cycle more safely, more often. Adrian’s chosen charity, The British Heart Foundation, was founded back in 1961 by a group of medical professionals, who were concerned about the increasing death rate from cardiovascular disease. Today, Coronary heart disease is the UK’s singe biggest killer and the Charity continues to fight through pioneering heart research, vital prevention and survival activity and ensuring quality care and support for everyone living with heart disease. You can help Adrian continued support for the Charity by sponsoring him in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100. You can sponsor by visiting Adrian’s JustGiving Page or talking to him direct at our Corporate department.

SKODA
SKODA REVEALS ITS VISION FOR THE FUTURE.
V
ision X is Skoda’s concept of its vision for their future crossover. It uses a CNGand petrol-powered engine with an electric motor which limits emissions to just 89g/km of CO2. “The exterior design provides a concrete view of the third member of the successful SUV family. With this model we will attract even more customers to the Skoda brand going forward,” said Bernhard Maier, Skoda CEO. The vehicle retains the styling cues from the current Skoda SUV family, and the compact proportions, short overhangs and precise lines create an agile and sporty looking vehicle. The new hybrid system includes a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, which can run on CNG. The engine is supported by two electric motors, belt driven start generator and larger motor in the rear axle. A compact battery allows for pure-electric driving range of just over a mile and recharging capabilities from brake regeneration. The power output from the hybrid system allows the Skoda
Vision X to accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. The interior provides generous space for both passengers and luggage. Versatile luggage solutions, breathable fabrics and rubber surfaces all support an active lifestyle. The concept also demonstrates Skoda’s vision of connectivity with new systems including Smart Parking, HoppyGo, TwoGo and CareDriver. The technologies: direct the driver to available parking spaces, offer the car rental when not in use, offer car sharing opportunities and can ensure children can be picked up from nursery if a parent or guardian cannot make it. Skoda’s latest infotainment system includes a built-in mobile phone docking station which allows smartphone apps to be used on board the Skoda Vision X. Skoda plans to extensively expand its range of hybrid and electric models between now and 2025. The first model to be launch will be the Skoda Superb Plug-In Hybrid in 2019 followed by a purely electric model.

In recent times, the media has been swarmed with news around electric cars and the future of the diesel engine, so it’s tempting to think the internal combustion engine maybe on the way out. After all, more and more automotive manufacturers are promising to reduce emissions every year and potentially looking to go electric across their model line-up. Mazda has been looking at doing something different though, as in truth the internal combustion engine is going to power the vast amount of vehicles for at least the next 50 years. Mazda has realised this and has tasked its R&D department to improve the gasoline engine today to maximise benefits over the next half-century.
Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030
Mazda’s fuel economy and emissions development program is called Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030, it’s declared to reduce complete “well-to-wheel” CO2 emissions to 50% of 2010 levels by 2030, and just 10% by 2050. Well-to-wheel is an important concept, as 40% of the world’s electricity is generated by burning coal. Coal contributed to 39% of global CO2¬ emissions, according to National Geographic magazine. This means, it doesn’t matter if your electric car has no emissions if its power comes from a power plant burning coal. Furthermore, industry estimates that 84.4% of vehicles built from now until 2050 will have some kind of combustion engines, whether it’s the primary engine, part of a hybrid, or an EV range extender. Therefore, Mazda believes improving the efficiency of the gasoline engine is a vital step to reduce the total systemic emissions in the transportation sector.
SKYACTIV Concept
Mazda plans in the next decade to introduce new hybrids and electric vehicles, but they are also focusing on the combustion engine due to it taking a huge share of the vehicles sold in the industry. Mazda’s investment is to focus on new engine technology, chassis and transmission refinements that lead to less weight lower aerodynamic drag and reduce energy loss. 17
SKYACTIV-X Engine
The latest concept is the SKYACTIV-X engine, which focuses burning fuel in a totally different way. In a conventional gasoline engine, a spark plug ignites a mixture of fuel and air at the right moment, with the mixture compressed at the point of ignition. Diesel engines differ by have the air compressed very tightly and the fuel is introduced at the maximum point of compression. The diesel fuel ignites spontaneously without a spark plug. SKYACTIV-X uses this concept by having a high compression ratio similar to a diesel engine, but it’s not high enough to cause the gasoline to spontaneously ignite. This concept allows the SKYACTIV-X to burn considerably less fuel than a conventional gasoline engine, leading to lower CO2 emissions. Secondly, the ultrahigh compression ration means more power is extracted in every stroke.
Has this been tried before?
Compression ignition was first invited by Rudolf Diesel in 1890, hence why the fuel bears his name. Mercedes-Benz and General Motors have both tried to use the technology, but challenges of operation under widely varying circumstance have been too great, which has stopped mass production. Mazda found the biggest challenge was controlling when the compressed ignition occurs and stopping a pre-ignition. Engine management technology improvements in the last few years has helped to aid Mazda’s discovery.
The Future
Mazda plans to release the SKYACTIV-X engine in 2019, under the bonnet of the next-generation Mazda3. A prototype of the engine, is currently producing 170hp and 174 pound-feet of torque from a 2.0-litre engine, similar numbers to a 2.5-litree SKYACTIV-G engine.
