THE ALL-NEW PEUGEOT 3 'Carbuyer Car of the Year 2017'

Well it’s no surprise. The 3008 has swept up two Carbuyer awards, Best SUV and Car of the Year. The Carbuyer Best awards are among the most useful and relevant because they’re defined by the questions you ask of search engines.

Fending off strong opposition for the coveted titles, it was praised for its unbeaten combination of chic styling, efficient engines, excellent practicality and a stunning interior. Now a fully-fledged SUV as opposed to a cross over, the new model is a completely different car with new bold and striking styling on the outside, but it’s the interior where the bar has really been raised. It’s the first car in the range to feature the 2nd gen i-Cockpit displaying a 12.3inch touch screen that’ll present the speed, navigation, phone and audio info – standard on every model in the range.

3008 SUV

It’s not only technology and style that excels the 3008 ahead of the pack, but when it comes to boot and interior space, those bases are covered too. In an SUV market dominated by some exceptionally able cars, it takes something special to be the best. And that’s why the Peugeot 3008 has been named Carbuyer’s Car of the Year for 2017. Peugeot 3008 DKR liveried and ready for 2017 Dakar

P

eugeot’s 3008 DKR follows the blueprint set out by last year’s Dakar winning 2008 DKR. Peugeot has released new pictures of its 2017 Dakar desert rally challenger, this time sporting the full Red Bull livery it will wear during the gruelling twelve-day campaign across South America. The 3008 DKR will aim to pick up where last year’s winner - the 2008 DKR – left off. Like that car, the 3008 DKR is a radical departure from the Peugeot 3008 crossover it is based on, sharing only a few styling cues. Underneath it features a purpose built chassis designed with the rough and tumble of the Dakar in mind, plus a mid-mounted engine powering the rear wheels. Not using four-wheel-drive in an offroad race as tough as the Dakar may seem counter intuitive, but victory for the rear-

wheel-drive 2008 DKR last year proved it’s still possible, being the first win for a two-wheel drive car in 15 years. The engine in the 3008 DKR is a 3.0-litre twinturbo V6 diesel, producing 340bhp and a mammoth 800Nm of torque. That’s plenty of power to propel the lightweight, carbon-fibre body around. The 3008 DKR has a six-speed sequential gearbox, and though it’s not geared for maximum speed it can still hit 124mph. Its real strength comes when you ask it to attack sand dunes, and Peugeot hopes it will replicate the success of this year’s Dakar-winning 2008 DKR over difficult desert terrain. Peugeot says it will do this with improvements in four key areas – reliability, driveability, suspension and air-conditioning. The reliability aspect is especially key in the 10,000km Dakar rally – often described as ‘the toughest race in the world.’ The 3008 DKR may not share much with the standard 3008 SUV, but Peugeot was keen to display

that car in the design of the bodywork. “Our new Dakar car is the most extreme expression of Peugeot’s latest SUV,” said Sebastien Criquet, senior exterior designer at Peugeot. “It keeps the distinctive design language of the road car, but tranports it into a rally context. And that’s the dream job for any designer: when you create a car, you always have a competition version at the back of your mind.” The next Dakar rally gets underway on Monday 2 January 2017 in Asuncion, Paraguay – the first time the rally visits the country. The course will head north west to the Bolivian capital city of La Paz, before coming back south east, finishing on Saturday 14 January in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

PEUGEOT RUMOURS We have been hearing a number of rumours recent perfect opportunity to get everyone up to speed. NEW PEUGEOT 208 DUE IN 2018 WITH ALL-ELECTRIC MODEL

The new Peugeot 208 supermini will get sharper looks and an all-electric model to help it rival the Citroen C3 and Ford Fiesta. Peugeot is planning to add an all-electric powertrain to its next 208 supermini, Auto Express understands. The new model is set to launch in 2018 on an all-new platform, which will be engineered to support the new technology. Asked about the potential for electric power in the larger EMP2 platform, Peugeot 3008 Project Manager Marion David said “that is something we are working on for the 208 platform. The range is not long enough for the larger cars yet.” That means the new CMP (Common Modular Platform) technology that will underpin the new 208, as well as future PSA Peugeot Citroen cars, is being engineered to support batteries and motors for all-electric models. The platform is set to shed weight over the current PF1 architecture, which will go some way to offset the weight of battery packs in the small car. The electric 208 would be part of the PSA Group’s plan to launch 11 electric cars over the next five years. While CMP will get a range of all-electric models, plug-in hybrids are on the way for larger cars like the new 3008 SUV, which will get a PHEV version in 2019.

the 308R Hybrid ARRIVING IN 2017?

An all-new and absolutely bonkers hybrid-electric Peugeot 308R is rumoured to be launched to rival the Focus RS and in the process becoming Peugeots new crown model, a position left by the recently discontinued RCZ coupe.

The as yet named 308R is likely to be using the powertrain from the 308 R hybrid Concept that was revealed at the Shanghai motor show last year. The concept produced a lofty 493bhp achieving a 0-62mph time of 4.0sec, two whole seconds faster than the 308 GTi 270 and 0.7sec quicker than the Focus RS. Jean-Philippe Imparato, the French automaker’s new chief, has hinted he would “love to launch something even faster” than the current 308 GTi, adding “There is space for something. I don’t have a solution but I am on it. We are very involved in competition sport, like Dakar, and we

On each level of our range – 308, 208 – we will have something impressive in performance. Do we work on a new RCZ or on the fact that the next 308 will be a beast?” Could we see the 308R becoming the first of the hybrid mega-hatch’s? Watch this space for more info!
