RIDE ONBOARD WITH JOHN
Bray Hill
4
When you begin your descent and head through the Crossroads, you can’t actually see the road, it just disappears.
From a standing start, we’re doing 175mph at this point, which looks sort of physically impossible. It’s like going off a cliff! It just drops off down the hill. In the cold, it’s hard to keep going. (map: milestone 1) 3
Crosby
Now, this is where the boozy spectators are all having a good time; but you’re having a nightmare.
People are so close to the track. Their legs are dangling on the grass verges and you’re going past at about 185mph. It’s the only place in the world that it can happen and it’s so special. This is the one where your superbike is sat at 13,500 revs and it’s not going to get much faster than that. (map: milestone 4)
Ballagarey Glenvine
It has many names (Ballascary), but, whatever you want to call it, it’s bloody scary.
It’s such an important corner to get right. It’s quite a frustrating corner, but when you get it right, you get a buzz. (map: milestone 3)

TRACK GUIDE
12
McGuinness Corner
This is my favourite corner on the track.
You can see the sign on the left, saying ‘McGuinness’ and I’m super proud of that one. I passed a couple of riders here the first time I ever won it [the TT] in 1999 and I’ve loved it ever since. It’s cool to have it named after you, and to be alive too. You’re normally gone before they’ll name a corner after you. (map: milestone 12) 25
37
You get the bike stopped, get it turned around and we almost do a 180 round the Motul wall and back out onto the start/ finish line. Then you’re crossing the line at 175mph back towards Bray Hill. Almost 38 miles in total, six times, two fuel stops. Job done. (map: milestone 37)
Gooseneck
Definitely not one of my favourite parts of the track.
Last year we had some heart rate monitors on from EMC, and you can see my stress and my heart rate levels go up. I’m trying to relax in this section of the track but you can’t really avoid any of the bumps. It’s really rough. (map: milestone 25)
Governor’s Dip
The slowest part of the track and not the most fun to ride either.

AFRICA TWIN WINS The Africa Twin beat seven competitors to the top spot and won the Bike magazine big adventure bike test. It managed to tick a lot of boxes, just to mention a few, it checked on “Ability to deal with gnarly off-road sections”, “Round the world touring capabilities” and “Onroad performance”.
The Honda Africa Twin has been much heralded for its true adventure capabilities. Journalists the world over have been swooning over its ability to deal with whatever the terrain decides to throw up. And now it seems that the Africa Twin has also been put through its paces to show exactly what it can do in a stunt capacity. Over the course of the video the rider pulls off a series of wheelies, stoppies and burnouts, much to the delight of the crowd. If anything, the video serves as a reminder that, in the right hands, a motorcycle is capable of doing anything. Of course, why you’d want to use an Africa Twin as a stunt bike is another thing altogether, but it’s impressive nonetheless.

AS A RTW OVERLANDER
Great balance with a good turning circle. A low seat for stability whilst still retaining a commanding view plus good fuel consumption figures. The Africa Twin will make you a very happy commuter.
The true adventure bike for the RTW over lander. Road or rocky trails this is the do it all bike and we’re not expecting reliability issues, it’s a Honda.
AS A WEEKEND TOURER
THE CONCLUSION
“The Honda wins for its great quality, it’s superb on the road, best on a trail, keen price and with the most authentic adventure feel. When the testers rank the bikes from best to worst, the Honda is on top. If we put them in the order we’d spend our own money on, it wins again. Game, set, match.”
A fast paced road bike that’ll bound you down motorways in stress-free comfort and offer you the option of taking on twisty A and B roads plus gnarly green lanes at the destination. What more do you want?
AS AN OFF-ROADER The best off-road capability of any 1000cc adventure bike on the market. The ergonomics, suspension, design, balance, wheel size and especially the DCT will have you enjoying the dirt like no other. As a continental road tourer More than capable of high speed motorway cruising in comfort and a hoot on alpine style roads. One thing I noticed on the test ride was the lack of riders stretching legs and standing towards the end of the day – always a good sign of long distance comfort.

orld Superbike racer Nicky Hayden helped Honda win the inaugural WTCC ART CARS competition during the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK last month. Voting was opened to the public for the inaugural WTCC ART CARS competition as the FIA World Touring Car Championship geared up for its first appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. WTCC ART CARS combined artistic design and motorsport in spectacular fashion as part of their exciting new partnership between the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the WTCC. Honda was amongst two other designers who were recruited to create the ultimate race car livery. They began with a blank canvas and the challenge of producing a unique design to fire interest among fans and truly capture their imagination. submitted designs for fans to vote for their favourite car artwork, this was done online or in person at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Honda established a partnership with the Jean Graton Foundation that resulted in the car – known as the Honda Art Car Jean Graton – carrying a unique livery inspired by - and in the style of – his most famous creation, Michel Vaillant. In 1957, Graton created a fictional racing driver named Michel Vaillant, whose stories were initially published in Tintin, but gained their own outlet two years later. It is the Michel Vaillant stories that are the inspiration for the Honda Art Car Jean Graton. Honda overcame competition from Polestar (Volvo) and TAG Heuer to win the 2016 WTCC ART CARS contest, a new partnership between the fastest international touring car series and the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with fans voting for their ultimate race car livery brought to life on three different World Touring Cars. 6
